Effect of Soiling on Solar Photovoltaic Performance under Desert Climatic Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building integrated photovoltaics, dust, photovoltaic, soiling, solar energy
The solar irradiation at the gulf Arabia is considered one of the highest in the world. However, this region is classified as a desert with high dust accumulation. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze the effect of soiling and the photovoltaic (PV) tilt angle on the performance of 2.0 MWp of car park PV plant in Oman. Experimental measurements were taken and a model was developed for simulation. The power generation by the cleaned PV system was measured as 1460 kW around noon. After one week of operation, the power production (at the same irradiance level) reduced to 1390 kW due to soiling. It further reduced to 1196 kW and 904 kW after three and five weeks of operation, respectively. The results also show that a soiling-percentage of 7.5% reduced the monthly electricity generation (307 MWh) by 5.6% and a soiling-percentage of 12.5% reduced the generation by 10.8%. Furthermore, the increase in tilt is not recommended due to the duo-pitch canopy effect of the car park where t... [more]

Investigation on the Operating Conditions of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Based on Constant Voltage Cold Start Mode
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold start, constant voltage mode, operating conditions, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
The cold start property is one of the main factors restricting the fuel cell application in the automotive field. The constant voltage cold start method of the fuel cell works under low start voltage and produces high heat, which can shorten the start-up time of the fuel cell at low temperature and has the opportunity to be applied to fuel cell vehicles. Meanwhile, in the constant voltage cold start mode, the fuel cell needs to operate under a large current, and more water is generated during the start-up process. Thus, the optimization of operating conditions for the constant voltage cold start is particularly important. However, there are relatively few studies on the optimization of operating conditions for the constant voltage cold start with a single-cell voltage less than 0.3 V. In this work, the cold start experiment of the fuel cell with constant voltage is carried out. According to the cold start experiment, the different cold start voltage, back-pressure, and the inlet flow r... [more]

100% Renewable Energy Scenarios for North America—Spatial Distribution and Network Constraints
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 100 percent renewable energies, capacity expansion modeling, electricity market integration
The urgency to combat climate change and the widely distributed, increasingly competitive renewable resources in North America are strong arguments to explore scenarios for a renewable energy supply in the region. While the current power system of North America is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, namely natural gas, coal and oil, and some nuclear power plants, some current policies at the state level, and future federal policies are likely to push the share of different renewable sources available in Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. This paper explores three scenarios for a renewable energy supply, using a bottom-up energy system model with a high level of spatial and time granularity. The scenarios span the extremes with respect to connecting infrastructure: while one scenario only looks at state-level supply and demand, without interconnections, the other extreme scenario allows cross-continental network investments. The model results indicate that the North American continent (a) has... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis of 4R3C Model Parameters with Respect to Structure and Geometric Characteristics of Buildings
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: building energy performance, building geometry, building structure, RC models, sensitivity analysis, system identification
Data-driven models, either simplified or detailed, have been extensively used in the literature for energy assessment in buildings and districts. However, the uncertainty of the estimated parameters, especially of thermal masses in resistance−capacitance (RC) models, still remains a significant challenge, given the wide variety of buildings functionalities, typologies, structures and geometries. Therefore, the sensitivity analysis of the estimated parameters in RC models with respect to different geometric characteristics is necessary to examine the accuracy of identified models. In this work, heavy- and light-structured buildings are simulated in Transient System Simulation Tool (TRNSYS) to analyze the effects of four main geometric characteristics on the total heat demand, maximum heat power and the estimated parameters of an RC model (4R3C), namely net-floor area, windows-to-floor ratio, aspect ratio, and orientation angle. Executing more than 700 simulations in TRNSYS and comparing... [more]

Stimulating E-Mobility Diffusion in Germany (EMOSIM): An Agent-Based Simulation Approach
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agent-based model, e-mobility, innovation diffusion
The German Climate Action Plan targets an electric vehicle fleet of 6 million by 2030. However, from today’s perspective, we are far away from a path that is steep enough to reach this goal. In order to identify how different policy instruments can stimulate e-mobility diffusion in Germany, we build and calibrate an agent-based simulation model (ABM). The model allows for the consideration of the rich dynamics of social influence as well as the heterogeneity of actors and is flexible enough to be applied with other technologies. We simulate different policy scenarios against a business as usual (BAU) scenario. We show that with the currently implemented set of policies (BAU scenario), it is very unlikely that the envisaged goals in terms of e-mobility diffusion can be reached. Moreover, we suggest additional measures such as a carbon tax on fuel, more charging points, and higher direct subsidies, which are as a combined package likely to have a significantly positive effect on the diff... Well Killing Technology before Workover Operation in Complicated Conditions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: emulsifier, hydrophobic emulsion, well killing, well killing fluid, well stimulation, workover operation
Well killing is an important technological stage before conducting workover operation, one of the tasks of which is to preserve and restore the natural filtration characteristics of the bottomhole formation zone (BFZ). Special attention should be paid to the choice of well killing technologies and development of wells in complicated conditions, which include abnormally low reservoir pressure, high oil-gas ratio and carbonate reservoir type. To preserve the filtration characteristics of the productive formation and prevent fluid losses in producing wells during well killing operation, blocking compositions are used. At the same time, an informed choice of the most effective well killing technologies is required. Consequently, there is a need to conduct laboratory physicochemical and coreflood experiments simulating geological, physical, and technological conditions of field development, as similar as possible to actual reservoir conditions. The article presents the results of experiment... [more]

Assessment of Offshore Wave Energy Resources in Taiwan Using Long-Term Dynamically Downscaled Winds from a Third-Generation Reanalysis Product
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamical downscaling, reanalysis product, Taiwanese waters, wave energy resource, WRF model
In this study, long-term wind fields during 1991−2010 from the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) were dynamically downscaled over Taiwan and its offshore islands at a 5 km horizontal resolution using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. Simulations of the 10 m (above sea level) dynamically downscaled winds served as the atmospheric forcing for driving a fully coupled wave-circulation model. The sea states of the waters surrounding Taiwan during 1991−2010 were hindcasted to evaluate the offshore wave energy resources and optimal wave energy hotspots. This study reveals that the southeastern offshore waters of Taiwan and the Central Taiwan Strait exhibited the highest mean wave power density (WPD), exceeding 20 kW/m. The annual mean WPD, incidence of the hourly WPD greater than or equal to 4 kW/m, monthly variability index and coefficient of variation of the WPD indicated that the sea areas located between Green Island and Orchid Island (OH_1), southeast of Orchid Is... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 0D/1D engine model, coupled simulation, ECU model, predictive combustion, WHTC
In the current study, a 0D/1D engine model built in the commercial code GT-Suite was coupled with the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) model created in the Simulink environment, aiming to more accurately predict the interaction of the engine and aftertreatment system (ATS) operating parameters, both during steady-state and transient maneuvers. After a detailed validation based on extensive experimental data from a heavy-duty commercial diesel Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), the engine model was fine-tuned and the 0D predictive diesel combustion model, DIPulse, was calibrated to best predict the combustion process, including engine-out NOx emissions. For correct prediction of the engine’s behavior in transient operations, the complete control strategy of the air path, including boost, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), main and pilot Start of Injection (SOI), injection pressure, and exhaust flap, was implemented in the Simulink environment. Study on Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical Coupling and the Stability of a Geothermal Wellbore Structure
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold water injection, geothermal wellbore structure, integrity, thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling
For processes such as water injection in deep geothermal production, heat transfer and fluid flow are coupled and affect one another, which leads to numerous challenges in wellbore structure safety. Due to complicated wellbore structures, consisting of casing, cement sheaths, and formations under high temperature, pressure, and in situ stress, the effects of thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling are crucial for the instability control of geothermal wellbores. A THM-coupled model was developed to describe the thermal, fluid, and mechanical behavior of the casing, cement sheath, and geological environment around the geothermal wellbore. The results show that a significant disturbance of effective stress occurred mainly due to the excess pore pressure and temperature changes during cold water injection. The effective stress gradually propagated to the far-field and disrupted the integrity of the wellbore structure. A serious thermal stress concentration occurred at the junction of the ca... [more]

Discrete Fundamental AC Voltage Controller for Three-Phase Standalone Converters
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LC filter, pole placement, standalone converter, state-space voltage control
Voltage control of standalone converters with LC filter is usually based on proportional-resonant or proportional-integral controllers, which often require further active damping methods to achieve stability. These solutions place design constraints in the selection of the closed-loop pole locations which limit the achievable bandwidth and increase the design complexity. In contrast, in state-space based controllers, the closed-loop poles can be placed freely through state feedback, which makes them particularly suitable for high order plants and/or low sampling frequencies. Among the modern control methods, direct pole placement is a simple technique that enables the establishment of a straightforward relationship between outcome and design, as opposed to more advanced approaches. This paper presents a discrete state-space voltage controller for standalone converters with LC output filter. The proposed method combines the direct pole placement technique with a virtual disturbance obse... [more]

Contradictory Conservation: The Role of Leadership in Shaping Energy Efficiency Culture in Urban Residential Cooperative Buildings
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: behavior, Energy Efficiency, leadership, organizational culture, residential buildings
In addition to formalized leadership roles within organizations, leadership can also influence members through informal channels. This work argues that multifamily residential buildings can be viewed as organizations and, as such, explores the influence that informal leaders can wield in shaping culture around the motivation for conserving energy. This work draws on qualitative fieldwork conducted in a Brooklyn cooperative building. Findings indicate that the study building benefitted from the leadership of a long-standing board member, which contributed to the implementation of a number of energy efficiency initiatives. Interestingly, this leadership also led to a culture of cost efficiency over environmental concern as the motivating force behind these initiatives. This narrative was well disseminated, with most residents reporting that the building does not have a culture of conservation, despite a strong energy efficiency leaning. Thus, this work posits that leadership can greatly... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: electric distribution systems, Equivalent Operational Impedance (EOI), non-technical losses, technical losses
Energy losses are a fundamental issue in the electricity distribution sector, being an inevitable consequence of transporting energy from supplying sources to consumers’ installations and are becoming one of the factors to be considered in planning and operation of electrical distribution networks. So, electrical distribution losses must be continuously monitored so that they are kept within acceptable levels to ensure the business profitability as well as the good power quality of supplied energy. In this context, this work introduces a modified methodology for technical losses calculation with the application of the concept of reduced equivalent networks, via definition of an Equivalent Operational Impedance, taking as a starting point the electrical network modeling in the Open Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS). The losses calculation also considers customer’s energy billing measurement data, measurements of injected energy and power factor at the feeder’s coupling bus at the... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy promotion, energy storage system, Optimization, photovoltaic energy, rate for renewable energy
Various incentive schemes are being implemented to improve the economic return of distributed energy resources (DERs). Accordingly, research on the optimal capacity design and operations of photovoltaic (PV) power generation and energy storage systems (ESSs) is important to ensure the economic efficiency of DERs. This study presents the models of optimal capacity and facility operation methods based on long-term operational changes of DERs in a building with self-consumption. Key policy variables are derived for a renewable energy system. We first analyzed the operating environments of the DERs according to the basic types of PVs and ESSs, and by examining the detailed benefit structure of a special rate for renewable energy. The optimal capacity of PVs and ESSs with the lowest net cost was estimated using various parameters in consideration of long-term operations (~15 years), and by setting rules for a special rate for renewable energy. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: adaptive particle swarm optimization, cable connection layout, local search, multiple wind turbine types, offshore wind farm, power losses, Voronoi diagram
Offshore wind energy, as one of the featured rich renewable energy sources, is getting more and more attention. The cable connection layout has a significant impact on the economic performance of offshore wind farms. To make better use of the wind resources of a given sea area, a new method for optimal construction of offshore wind farms with different types of wind turbines has emerged in recent years. In such a wind farm, the capacities of wind turbines are not identical which brings new challenges for the cable connection layout optimization. In this work, an optimization model named CCLOP is proposed for such wind farms. The model incorporates both the cable capital cost and the cost of power losses associated with the cables in its objective function. To get an optimized result, a Voronoi diagram based adaptive particle swarm optimization with local search is proposed and applied. Interval Load Flow for Uncertainty Consideration in Power Systems Analysis
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: interval load flow, Monte Carlo Simulation, probabilistic load flow, uncertainty
Modern power systems must deal with a greater degree of uncertainty in power flow calculation due to variations in load and generation introduced by new technologies. This scenario poses new challenges to power system operators which require new tools for an accurate assessment of the system state. This paper presents an interval load flow (ILF) approach for dealing with uncertainty in power system analysis. A probabilistic load flow (PLF), based on Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), was also implemented for comparative purposes. The ILF and PLF are used to estimate the network states. Both methods were implemented in Python® using the IEEE 34-bus, IEEE 69-bus and 192-bus Brazilian distribution system. The results with the proposed ILF on the aforementioned benchmark test systems proved to be compatible with that of the MCS, evidencing the robustness and applicability of the proposed approach.

Investigation of the Carrier Movement through the Tunneling Junction in the InGaP/GaAs Dual Junction Solar Cell Using the Electrically and Optically Biased Photoreflectance Spectroscopy
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrically biased photoreflectance, InGaP/GaAs dual junction solar cell, optically biased photoreflectance, tunnel junction
For examining the carrier movements through tunnel junction, electrically and optically-biased photoreflectance spectroscopy (EBPR and OBPR) were used to investigate the internal electric field in the InGaP/GaAs dual junction solar cell at room temperature. At InGaP and GaAs, the strength of p-n junction electric fields (Fpn) was perturbed by the external DC bias voltage and CW light intensity for EBPR and OBPR experiments, respectively. Moreover, the Fpn was evaluated using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the Franz—Keldysh oscillation from PR spectra. In the EBPR, the electric field decreased by increasing the DC bias voltage, which also decreased the potential barrier. In OBPR, when incident CW light is absorbed by the top cell, the decrement of the Fpn in the GaAs cell indicates that the photogenerated carriers are accumulated near the p-n junction. Photogenerated carriers in InGaP can pass through the tunnel junction, and the PR results show the contribution of the modification... [more]

A New Modeling Framework for Multi-Scale Simulation of Hydraulic Fracturing and Production from Unconventional Reservoirs
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, multi-scale, Simulation
This paper describes a new modeling framework for microscopic to reservoir-scale simulations of hydraulic fracturing and production. The approach builds upon a fusion of two existing high-performance simulators for reservoir-scale behavior: the GEOS code for hydromechanical evolution during stimulation and the TOUGH+ code for multi-phase flow during production. The reservoir-scale simulations are informed by experimental and modeling studies at the laboratory scale to incorporate important micro-scale mechanical processes and chemical reactions occurring within the fractures, the shale matrix, and at the fracture-fluid interfaces. These processes include, among others, changes in stimulated fracture permeability as a result of proppant behavior rearrangement or embedment, or mineral scale precipitation within pores and microfractures, at µm to cm scales. In our new modeling framework, such micro-scale testing and modeling provides upscaled hydromechanical parameters for the reservoir s... [more]

An eDrive-Based Estimation Method of the Laundry Unbalance and Laundry Inertia for Washing Machine Applications
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: laundry inertia, laundry unbalance, washing machine
The estimation of the laundry unbalance and laundry inertia is fundamental in washing machine applications. On the one hand, the estimation and management of the laundry unbalance play a pivotal role in reducing mechanical stress and noise during the spinning phase. On the other hand, the laundry inertia’s estimation, performed at the beginning of the washing cycle, allows for the determination of the proper amounts of water and detergent, the water temperature, and the tumbling time. In this way, good washing performance is obtained, avoiding the waste of energy and resources. Moreover, at the end of the washing cycle, the laundry inertia’s accurate estimation is needed to properly manage the spinning phase. With the aim of optimizing the washing performance, this paper proposes a novel method to estimate the laundry unbalance and laundry inertia. Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown on the Electricity System of Great Britain: A Study on Energy Demand, Generation, Pricing and Grid Stability
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: behaviour, COVID-19, demand, electricity demand, electricity pricing, electricity system, Energy, lockdown
The outbreak of SARS-COV-2 disease 2019 (COVID-19) abruptly changed the patterns in electricity consumption, challenging the system operations of forecasting and balancing supply and demand. This is mainly due to the mitigation measures that include lockdown and work from home (WFH), which decreased the aggregated demand and remarkably altered its profile. Here, we characterise these changes with various quantitative markers and compare it with pre-lockdown business-as-usual data using Great Britain (GB) as a case study. The ripple effects on the generation portfolio, system frequency, forecasting accuracy and imbalance pricing are also analysed. An energy data extraction and pre-processing pipeline that can be used in a variety of similar studies is also presented. Analysis of the GB demand data during the March 2020 lockdown indicates that a shift to WFH will result in a net benefit for flexible stakeholders, such as consumers on variable tariffs. Application of a Magnetic Field in Saturated Film Boiling of a Magnetic Nanofluid (MNF) under Reduced Gravity
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: enhanced heat transfer, film boiling, magnetic nanofluid (MNF), reduced gravity
To overcome the problem of abnormally large bubbles and the large reduction of heat flux under low gravity, the computational model of magnetic nanofluid (MNF) boiling flow was used to systematically study the thermodynamic characteristics of an MNF-saturated film boiling with and without the magnetic field. This study found that in the absence of a magnetic field, the decrease of the gravity level makes the bubble size increase and the bubble departure time increase, and the lower the gravity level, the worse the boiling heat transfer. However, after applying the magnetic field, bubble size decreases significantly and the bubble departure time is shortened. As the magnetic field intensity increases, the difference in bubble size and heat transfer characteristics between different gravity levels becomes smaller and smaller, which shows that for the boiling flow of MNF under low gravity levels, applying a magnetic field can effectively avoid the appearance of abnormally large bubbles, e...
