Electrochemical Properties of Porous Graphene/Polyimide-Nickel Oxide Hybrid Composite Electrode Material
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: graphene–polyimide composite, hybrid composite material, nickel oxide, porous composite structure, pseudocapacitance, specific capacitance
Polyimide-graphene nanosheet composite electrodes are rigid and dense and, therefore, exhibit moderate electrochemical properties. The electrochemical properties of polyimide-graphene nanosheet electrodes were remarkably improved by creating voids in the composite followed by the insertion of nickel oxide into the composites. Nickel oxide particles were electrodeposited onto the porous graphene/poly(amic acid) composite, containing poly (acrylic resin). The hybrid composite was then subjected to thermal treatment at ≥ 300 °C to simultaneously complete imidization and degrade the poly (acrylic resin). Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to study the eletrochemical properties of the composite electrode material. It is shown that remarkable improvement in the electrochemical behavior of the hybrid composite occurred due to the removal of poly(acrylic acid) and the insertion of NiO particles into the polyimide matrix. Fourier Transform Infrare... [more]

Energy Management System of DC Microgrid in Grid-Connected and Stand-Alone Modes: Control, Operation and Experimental Validation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: centralized control, DC microgrid, distributed generation, energy management system, grid-connected, stand-alone
This paper proposes an energy management system (EMS) of direct current (DC) microgrid. In order to implement the proposed EMS, the control and operation method of EMS is presented in this work. While most of the studies have individually examined the grid-connected mode used in building and the stand-alone operation mode applicable to the island, the proposed EMS allows it to be used in both grid-connected mode and stand-alone mode with 10 modes. In order to determine each mode in EMS, not only the amount of generated power, load power, and the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, but also the rated power of the energy storage system (ESS) converter that performs charging and discharging operations is additionally considered. Thus, various uncertainties that may occur in the actual DC microgrid environment can be improved. A laboratory-scale DC microgrid is fabricated to conduct experimental validation of proposed EMS. Experiments of DC microgrid with proposed EMS were performed for... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: collector-storage wall, experimental tests, heat flux, numerical simulations, skeleton structure, Trombe wall
The article presents the possibility of using a mass collector-storage wall (CSW), integrated into the structure of a building with a light skeleton structure. The considered system is a proposal for an energy-saving solution that can be used in buildings with various utility purposes. The article presents the results of experimental tests of a collector-storage wall mounted in the space of the skeleton structure of the southern facade of a building for the period of one year, as well as the results of numerical simulation. In the summer, the influence of the use of heat-insulating roller shutters on limiting overheating of the chamber interior was investigated. The effect of using the roller shutters is a reduction in the average value of the heat flux by about 77%. In the winter, the energy efficiency of the wall was tested. The obtained effect is energy consumption during the heating season at a level comparable to a wall with a traditional structure with a coefficient of U = 0.30 W... [more]

Calculating the Efficiency of Complex-Shaped Fins
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: complex-shaped fin, continuous fin, fin efficiency, numerical simulation, plate-fin and tube heat exchanger, virtual fin
Calculation of fin efficiency is necessary for the design of heat exchangers. This efficiency can be calculated for individual finned tubes or continuous fins. Continuous fins are mostly used in plate-fin and tube heat exchangers (PFTHEs). In most cases, the basic elements of those PFTHEs are circular, oval or flattened pipes, which contain circular or polygonal fins. Continuous fins, as can be observed in PFTHEs, are divided into virtual fins. Those fins can have a rectangular shape for an inline arrangement of pipes or a hexagonal shape for a staggered arrangement of pipes. This research shows a methodology of using the finite element method for calculating the efficiency of fins of any shape, placed on pipes of any shape. This paper presents examples of determining the efficiency of seeming fins, which are most commonly used in PFTHEs. In the article, we also compare the precision of calculations of the efficiency of complex-shaped fins using exact analytical methods and approximate... [more]

Profit-Based Unit Commitment for a GENCO Equipped with Compressed Air Energy Storage and Concentrating Solar Power Units
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Compressed Air Energy Storage, concentrating solar power plant, electricity markets, generation companies, profit-based unit commitment
With the advent of restructuring in the power industry, the conventional unit commitment problem in power systems, involving the minimization of operation costs in a traditional vertically integrated system structure, has been transformed to the profit-based unit commitment (PBUC) approach, whereby generation companies (GENCOs) perform scheduling of the available production units with the aim of profit maximization. Generally, a GENCO solves the PBUC problem for participation in the day-ahead market (DAM) through determining the commitment and scheduling of fossil-fuel-based units to maximize their own profit according to a set of forecasted price and load data. This study presents a methodology to achieve optimal offering curves for a price-taker GENCO owning compressed air energy storage (CAES) and concentrating solar power (CSP) units, in addition to conventional thermal power plants. Various technical and physical constraints regarding the generation units are considered in the pro... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: benefits, coking characteristics, coking coal, indirect drying, soda residue
To improve indirect drying efficiency, the effect of soda residue on the drying characteristics of coking coal were studied using a self-made indirect drying system. A tube furnace was used in the dry distillation of coal samples with soda residue, and the coke properties were analyzed. The results indicated that the soda residue has a significant influence on the increase in the heating rate of coal samples in the temperature distribution range of 90 to 110 °C. With the addition of 2%, 5%, and 10% soda residue, the drying rates increased by 11.5%, 25.3%, and 37.3%, respectively at 110 °C. The results of dry distillation show that addition of 2%, 5% and 10% soda residue decreases the carbon loss quantity by 4.67, 4.99, and 8.82 g, respectively. The mechanical strength of coke samples satisfies the industrial conditions when the soda residue ratio ranges from 2% to 5%. Soda residue can improve the active point of coke dissolution reaction and inhibit coke internal solution. Economically... [more]

Cement Placement: An Overview of Fluid Displacement Techniques and Modelling
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cement placement, cement–mud interface instability, fluid displacement, mud removal
During drilling operations, effective displacement of fluids can provide high-quality cementing jobs, ensuring zonal isolation and strong bonding of cement with casing and formation. Poor cement placements due to incomplete mud removal can potentially lead to multiple critical operational problems and serious environmental hazards. Therefore, efficient mud removal and displacement of one fluid by another one is a crucial task that should be designed and optimized properly to guarantee the zonal isolation and integrity of the cement sheath. The present work provides an overview of the research performed on mud removal and cement placement to help the industry achieve better cementing jobs. An extensive number of investigations have been conducted in order to find some key techniques for minimizing the cement contamination and obtaining maximum displacement efficiency. Yet, even after implementing those techniques, the industry happens to encounter poor cementing jobs. The present review... [more]

Effects of the Wall Properties on the Cooling Efficiency in a Thermosyphon Containing PCM Suspensions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat transfer, latent heat, phase change material, thermosyphon, wall material
This study explores the effects of pipe wall properties (thermal conductivity k and wall thickness tw) on the heat transfer performance of a rectangular thermosyphon with a phase change material (PCM) suspension and a geometric configuration (aspect ratio = 1; dimensionless heating section length = 0.8; dimensionless relative elevation between the cooling and the heating sections = 2) that ensures the optimum heat transfer efficiency in the cooling section. The following parameter ranges are studied: the dimensionless loop wall thickness (0 to 0.5), wall-to-fluid thermal conductivity ratio (0.1 to 100), modified Rayleigh number (1010 to 1011), and volumetric fraction of PCM particles (0 to 10%). The results show that appropriate selection of k and tw can lead to improved heat transfer effectiveness in the cooling section of the PCM suspension-containing rectangular thermosyphon.

A Review on Management of End of Life Tires (ELTs) and Alternative Uses of Textile Fibers
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: end of life tires, energy recovery, material recycling, rubber, textile fibers
Annually, approximately 3 billion tires are commercially transacted worldwide each year and an equivalent amount is disposed of by the end of their life. Despite the increase in the life of tires and the global economic and pandemic crisis, the number of discarded tires is going to rise further due to the increasing demand for vehicles worldwide (approximately 5 billion tires by the end of 2030). The obsolete methods of tire disposal, including landfill, burning, etc., are a responsible for environmental issues (harmful substances production, air and soil pollution) and for the transmission of various diseases. Nowadays, approximately 70% of the total tires at the end of their life (ELTs) is recovered. The largest percentage of the recovered ELTs is intended for energy production or recovery as a fuel in cement industries or can be used for the production of various materials. A significant amount (approximately 95%) of the discarded ELTs can be reused. The products from the processing... [more]

Biogas Production from Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Spent Mushroom Substrate with Different Livestock Manure
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas production, degradation rate, manure, spent mushroom substrate
Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is defined as the biomass waste generated during industrial mushroom cultivation. Utilization of SMS has been extensively researched and has immense potential as a sustainable substrate for generating biogas that can offset fossil fuel use. This closed loop energy generation process that can be set up in mushroom plants will reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which will benefit the environment. Anaerobic co-digestion of SMS with different agricultural wastes such as livestock manure would result in enhanced biogas production. In this study, the anaerobic co-digestion of SMS was carried out by combing yellow back fungus SMS along with chicken, dairy and pig manure. SMS combined with chicken manure yielded a slightly higher cumulative methane yield when compared with the combination of dairy manure and pig manure. Factors such as the total solids (TS) and the relative ratio of manure to SMS loadin... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy management, hybrid electric vehicle, Optimization, remote switching and automation, renewable microgrids
Renewable microgrids are new solutions for enhanced security, improved reliability and boosted power quality and operation in power systems. By deploying different sources of renewables such as solar panels and wind units, renewable microgrids can enhance reducing the greenhouse gasses and improve the efficiency. This paper proposes a machine learning based approach for energy management in renewable microgrids considering a reconfigurable structure based on remote switching of tie and sectionalizing. The suggested method considers the advanced support vector machine for modeling and estimating the charging demand of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). In order to mitigate the charging effects of HEVs on the system, two different scenarios are deployed; one coordinated and the other one intelligent charging. Due to the complex structure of the problem formulation, a new modified optimization method based on dragonfly is suggested. Moreover, a self-adaptive modification is suggested, which... [more]

On the Possible Introduction of Mini Gas Turbine Cycles Onboard Ships for Heat and Power Generation
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: COGES, cruise ships, marine propulsion plant, mini gas turbines, statistical analysis, turbo-generators and steam turbines
The recent coming in force of MARPOL 2020 restrictions on shipping pollutant emissions highlights a growing interest in current times towards cleaner means of transport. One way to achieve more sustainable vessels is represented by updating onboard engines to suit current regulations and needs: Gas Turbines are not a novelty in the field and, despite the few applications in commercial shipping so far, this technology is again under evaluation for different reasons. Indeed, it is still a preferred choice in navy, where swift maneuvering is a key factor; it is employed by fast ferries and hydrofoils for its high power/weight ratio; it has been recently applied to LNG carriers to burn boil-off gas in a more efficient way and several studies in literature suggest its possible introduction on large Cruise Ships. Since there seems to be a lack of research concerning small size units, the present work attempts to evaluate the possible usages of Mini Gas Turbine Cycles in the range of 1 to 10... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacity remuneration mechanism, market-oriented, power system economics, power system reliability, power system security, power system simulation
The crucial design elements of a good capacity remuneration mechanism are market orientation, insurance of long-term power system adequacy, and optimal cross-border generation capacity utilization. Having in mind these design elements, this research aims to propose a financially fair pricing mechanism that will guarantee enough new capacity and will not present state aid. The proposed capacity remuneration mechanism is an easy-to-implement linear program problem presented in its primal and dual form. The shadow prices in the primal problem and dual variables in the dual problem are used to calculate the prices of firm capacity which is capacity needed for long-term power system adequacy under capacity remuneration mechanism. The Impact of Foreign Direct Investments and Economic Growth on Environmental Degradation: The Case of the Balkans
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environmental degradation, environmental Kuznets curve, foreign direct investments, multivariate linear regression, Pearson correlation, pollution haven, polynomial linear regression
The aspiration of this study was to examine the impact of foreign direct investments (FDI) and economic growth on environmental degradation in the Balkans for the period 1998−2019. Balkan countries were classified into two groups, high income countries (HIC) and upper-middle income countries (UMIC). Thus, two hypotheses have been set. The effect of FDI on environmental degradation was observed through pollution haven hypothesis (PHH). To examine that connection, we used Pearson correlation for all countries, HIC and UMIC. Furthermore, the impact of economic growth on environmental degradation was tested through the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. For that purpose, polynomial linear regression was applied. In order to examine the dependence of environmental degradation in relation to all predictors in the model, a multivariate linear regression was used. PHH was confirmed in Serbia, Albania, Croatia, Romania, and Bulgaria, the Balkans as a whole, and HIC, and the EKC hypot... [more]

The “Zero Miles Product” Concept Applied to Biofuel Production: A Case Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel, ethanol fermentation, spent coffee ground
To make biofuel production feasible from an economic point of view, several studies have investigated the main associated bottlenecks of the whole production process through approaches such as the “cradle to grave” approach or the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis, being the main constrains the feedstock collection and transport. Whilst several feedstocks are interesting because of their high sugar content, very few of them are available all year around and moreover do not require high transportation’ costs. This work aims to investigate if the “zero miles” concept could bring advantages to biofuel production by decreasing all the associated transport costs on a locally established production platform. In particular, a specific case study applied to the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) campus is used as example to investigate the advantages and feasibility of using the spent coffee grounds generated at the main cafeteria for the production of bioethanol on site, which can be su... Building Energy Performance Analysis after Changing Its Form of Use from an Office to a Residential Building
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building form of use change, energy performance, nZEB, thermal comfort
Lowering energy consumption is one of the most important challenges of the modern world. Since the construction sector accounts for 40% of total energy consumption worldwide, the Parliament of the European Union has developed a Directive, according to which all newly designed and thermally upgraded buildings should meet the requirements of almost zero energy demand (nZEBs) from 1 January 2021. At the same time, in Poland, but also in many other countries in the world, there is a growing oversupply of office space in large cities with a simultaneous increase in demand for apartments, which is caused, among other things, by the increase in the share of remote work and the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, this is forcing owners to change the use of buildings from office to residential. This article analyses the possibilities of changing the function of an office building to a multi-family residential building. Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO dissociation, density functional theory, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, iron carbide, orthorhombic Fe7C3(001), CO adsorption
Fischer−Tropsch synthesis (FTS), which converts CO and H2 into useful hydrocarbon products, has attracted considerable attention as an efficient method to replace crude oil resources. Fe-based catalysts are mainly used in industrial FTS, and Fe7C3 is a common carbide phase in the FTS reaction. However, the intrinsic catalytic properties of Fe7C3 are theoretically unknown. Therefore, as a first attempt to understand the FTS reaction on Fe7C3, direct CO* dissociation on orthorhombic Fe7C3(001) (o-Fe7C3(001)) surfaces was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The surface energies of 14 terminations of o-Fe7C3(001) were first compared, and the results showed that (001)0.20 was the most thermodynamically stable termination. Furthermore, to understand the effect of the surface C atom coverage on CO* activation, C−O bond dissociation was performed on the o-Fe7C3(001)0.85, (001)0.13, (001)0.20, (001)0.09, and (001)0.99 surfaces, where the surface C atom coverages were 0.0... This paper analyzes the intelligent use of time-varying electrical load via developing efficient energy utilization patterns using demand-side management (DSM) strategies. This approach helps distribution utilities decrease maximum demand and electrical energy billing costs. A case study of DSM implementation of electric energy utility for an educational building Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology (ACGCET) campus was simulated. The new optimum energy load model was established for peak and off-peak periods from the system’s existing load profile using peak clipping and load shifting DSM techniques. The result reflects a significant reduction in maximum demand from 189 kW to 170 kW and a reduction in annual electricity billing cost from $11,340 to $10,200 (approximately 10%) in the upgraded system. This work highlights the importance of time of day (TOD) tariff structure consumers that aid reduction in their distribution system’s maximum demand and demand... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, drying, solar energy, Technoeconomic Analysis, thermodynamic modeling
In this study, a low-temperature drying plant based on renewable energies to dry food processing wastes is investigated. The demand-oriented heat supply is realized by a solar wall in combination with a biomass boiler. Due to the operational complexity of such a system with different sub-units and process parameters, steady-state simulations were performed in Aspen Plus to provide an insight into the process. Moreover, a time-resolved energetic evaluation was conducted to analyze the influence of varying capacity of the heat sources and operational strategy in addition to economic calculations. The simulations showed that an overall control strategy needs to consider the air properties as well as the flow rate of wet input material. In the reference case, the boiler must be operated at full load through the year to supply as much heat as possible. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: 110 kV overhead lines, damage, distribution grids, reliability, Wind
The article presents an assessment of the risk of damage to 110 kV overhead power lines as a result of the impact of wind of variable speeds on that equipment. A statistical method for the assessment of the reliability of power structures in conditions of variable strength of the structure and at variable exposure values is presented. This method is based on the analysis of the shape and mutual location of the distributions of the probability density of the momentary resistance (strength) of the tested structure and the exposures of variable values occurring in its surroundings. The risk of wind damage to 110 kV lines has been determined on the basis of many years of observations of wind speed and failure rate of the lines. Wind has been shown to be the fault factor or co-factor responsible for damage in one in five failures of such equipment. In this study, evaporator optimization, via both experimental and simulation methods was conducted. To evaluate the evaporator performance, under the optimal system, the compressor operating time and the effects of oil on the refrigerator system were studied. If the temperature of the refrigerator chamber reaches the setting value, the compressor stops working and it leads to the temperature of the refrigerator chamber slowly increasing, due to the heat transfer to the ambient. When the refrigerator temperature is out of the setting range, the compressor works again, and the refrigerator repeats this process until the end of its life. These on/off period can be controlled through the compressor piston movement.
