Hybrid Cascade Heat Pump and Thermal-Electric Energy Storage System for Residential Buildings: Experimental Testing and Performance Analysis
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buildings, cooling, electricity storage, heat pump, PCM, thermal energy storage
The need for innovative heating and cooling systems to decarbonize the building sector is widely recognized. It is especially important to increase the share of renewables at building level by maximizing self-consumption and reducing the primary energy demand. Accordingly, in the present paper, the results on a wide experimental campaign on a hybrid system are discussed. The system included a sorption module working as the topping cycle in a cascade configuration with a DC-driven vapor compression heat pump. A three-fluids heat exchanger with a phase change material (PCM), i.e., RT4 with nominal melting temperature of 4 °C, was installed on the evaporator side of the heat pump, for simultaneous operation as thermal storage and heat pumping purposes. The heat pump was connected to a DC-bus that included PV connection and electricity storage (batteries). Results showed that the energy efficiency of the heat pump in cascade operation was double compared to compression-only configuration a... [more]

Critical Buckling Generation of TCA Benchmark by the B1 Theory-Augmented Monte Carlo Calculation and Estimation of Uncertainties
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: critical buckling, DeCART2D, McCARD, random sampling, SNU S/U formulation, TCA benchmark, uncertainty/sensitivity analysis
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has developed the DeCART2D 2-dimensional (2D) method of characteristics (MOC) transport code and the MASTER nodal diffusion code and has established its own two-step procedure. For design code licensing, KAERI prepared a critical experiment on the verification and validation (V&V) of the DeCART2D code. DeCART2D is able to perform the MOC calculation only for 2D nuclear fuel systems, such as the fuel assembly. Therefore, critical buckling in the vertical direction is essential for comparison between the results of experiments and DeCART2D. In this study, the B1 theory-augmented Monte Carlo (MC) method was adopted for the generation of critical buckling. To examine critical buckling using the B1 theory-augmented MC method, TCA critical experiment benchmark problems were considered. Based on the TCA benchmark results, it was confirmed that the DeCART2D code with the newly-generated critical buckling predicts the criticality very well. In... [more]

Hybrid Energy Routing Approach for Energy Internet
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy cost, energy efficient path, Energy Internet, energy router, energy routing, P2P distributed energy trading, power loss, subscriber matching, transmission scheduling
The Energy Internet (EI) has been proposed as an evolution of the power system in order to improve its efficiency in terms of energy generation, transmission and consumption. It aims to make the use of renewable energy effective. Herein, the energy router has been considered the crucial element that builds the net structure between the different EI components by connecting and controlling the bidirectional power and data flow. The increased use of renewable energy sources in EI has contributed to the creation of a new competitive energy trading market known as peer-to-peer energy trading, which enables each component to be part of the trading process. As a consequence, the concept of energy routing is increasingly relevant. In fact, there are three issues that need to be taken into account during the energy routing process: the subscriber matching, the energy-efficient path and the transmission scheduling. In this work, we first proposed a peer-to-peer energy trading scheme to ensure a... [more]

The Interdependencies between Economic Growth, Energy Consumption and Pollution in Europe
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic growth, Energy Efficiency, pollution, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The strong interdependency between economic growth and conventional energy consumption have led to significant environmental impact, especially with respect to greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional energy-intensive industries release increasing quantities every year, which has prompted global leaders to consider new approaches based on sustainable consumption. The main purpose of this research is to propose a new energy index that accounts for the complexity and interdependences between the research variables. The methodology is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and combines the key components determined into a score that allows for both temporal and cross-country comparisons. All data analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25™. The main findings show that most countries improved their economic performance since 2014, but the speed of the improvement varies a lot from one country to another. The final score determined reflects the complex changes taking place in e... [more]

Local Communities’ Energy Literacy as a Way to Rural Resilience—An Insight from Inner Peripheries
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy literacy, energy transition, local communities, Poland, rural resilience
Energy transition is surely not only about the technological change, but it also has to necessarily reflect socio-cultural and environmental transformations on the local level. Hence, local communities’ energy literacy belongs to the crucial elements in designing successful energy transition and strengthening rural resilience. Energy literacy is a concept widely related to the multifaceted phenomenon of energy consumption, both in its individual and collective dimensions. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to analyse the level of energy literacy in rural conditions, considering its three key dimensions (awareness, attitude, and behaviour). Our reflective considerations about energy literacy build on the current knowledge that stress its importance for the reinforcement of rural resilience. The case study, Zławieś Wielka, in the north-central Poland, was selected where a social survey (N = 300) on the relation between energy literacy and rural resilience was conducted. By means... Reverse Causality between Oil Policy and Fiscal Policy? The Venezuelan Experience
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: fiscal policy, fiscal voracity, intergenerational accounting, oil expropriation cycles, oil policy, Venezuela
This paper uses a model of intergenerational accounting to simulate the intergenerational distribution of oil wealth in Venezuela. Venezuelan oil production does not seem to follow an optimal extraction path. Nevertheless, this is true if we do not consider what the government does with the resources received from the oil sector. We explored the interaction of oil policy and fiscal policy using such intergenerational accounting model. We argue that the way in which tax revenues (both, those coming from oil and those who do not) are used today can affect voters preferences on how they will be used tomorrow. These interactions could explain certain outcomes. In particular, the model could explain why the sector was open for investment in 1991 and then “re-nationalized” in 2001. Results suggest that when fiscal policy could leave an important burden to future generations, voters seem to favor a more tax-oriented oil policy, leaving the oil in the subsoil.

Modeling of Ethiopian Wind Power Production Using ERA5 Reanalysis Data
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ERA5, measurement, Modelling, reanalysis, wind speed
Ethiopia has huge wind energy potential. In order to be able to simulate the power system operation, hourly time series of wind power is needed. These can be obtained from ERA5 data but first a realistic model is needed. Therefore, in this paper ERA5 reanalysis data were used to model wind power production at two topographically different and distant regions of Ethiopian wind farms—Adama II and Ashegoda. Wind speed was extracted from the ERA5 nearest grid point, bi-linearly interpolated to farms location and statistically down-scaled to increase its resolution at the site. Finally, the speed is extrapolated to hub-height of turbine and converted to power through farm specific power curve to compare with actual data for validation. The results from the model and historical data of wind farms are compared using performance error metrics like hourly mean absolute error (MAE) and hourly root mean square error (RMSE). When comparing with data from Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), we found ho... [more]

Energy Efficiency Retrofits in Commercial Buildings: An Environmental, Financial, and Technical Analysis of Case Studies in Thailand
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building retrofits, commercial buildings, Energy Efficiency, MAC curve, marginal abatement cost curve
In the rapidly growing economies of Southeast Asia, energy consumption and energy costs in buildings continue to increase. Over the past decade, energy consumption from the commercial building sector in Thailand has increased at an average of 4% per annum and currently represents over 30% of total electricity consumption, second only to the industrial sector. Buildings that exist today will continue to represent most of both energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the built environment, with newly constructed buildings representing only a small additional portion. This paper analyzes the environmental, technical, and financial characteristics of energy efficiency retrofit activities in commercial buildings in Thailand through detailed case studies of forty-two projects undertaken over the past 8 years. Our findings suggest that retrofits provide significant opportunities to reduce energy use, energy costs, and GHG emissions while also validating the economic feasibility of inves... [more]

Application of an Artificial Neural Network for Measurements of Synchrophasor Indicators in the Power System
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network, DFT, FIR filter, phase and amplitude estimation, PMU, RBF, zero-crossing method
Dynamic phenomena in electric power systems require fast and accurate algorithms for processing signals. The processing results include synchrophasor parameters, e.g., varying amplitude, phase or frequency of sinusoidal voltage or current signals. This paper presents a novel estimation method of synchrophasor parameters that comply with the requirements of IEEE/IEC standards. The authors analyzed an algorithm for measuring the phasor magnitude by means of a selected artificial neural network (ANN), an algorithm for estimating the phasor phase and frequency that makes use of the zero-crossing method. The original components of the presented approach are: the method of the synchrophasor magnitude estimation by means of a suitably trained and applied radial basic function (RBF); the idea of using two algorithms operating simultaneously to estimate the synchrophasor magnitude, phase and frequency that apply identical calculation methods are different in that the first one filters the input... The Cost of Photovoltaic Forecasting Errors in Microgrid Control with Peak Pricing
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy management, Model Predictive Control, PARODIS
Model predictive control (MPC) is widely used for microgrids or unit commitment due to its ability to respect the forecasts of loads and generation of renewable energies. However, while there are lots of approaches to accounting for uncertainties in these forecasts, their impact is rarely analyzed systematically. Here, we use a simplified linear state space model of a commercial building including a photovoltaic (PV) plant and real-world data from a 30 day period in 2020. PV predictions are derived from weather forecasts and industry peak pricing is assumed. The effect of prediction accuracy on the resulting cost is evaluated by multiple simulations with different prediction errors and initial conditions. Analysis shows a mainly linear correlation, while the exact shape depends on the treatment of predictions at the current time step. Furthermore, despite a time horizon of 24h, only the prediction accuracy of the first 75min was relevant for the presented setting.

A Case Study of an Industrial Power Plant under Cyberattack: Simulation and Analysis
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical infrastructure, electric parameter, electro energetic system, power transformer, SCADA, simulation and analysis of cyber attack
For critical infrastructures, technological developments regarding real-time data transmission and processing improve the system’s operability and reliability. However, vulnerabilities are introduced in the case of implementing new remote access methods or where redundancy is low. At the national level, most critical infrastructures are connected, and, therefore, achieving a level of security and resilience is based on identifying a multitude of risks. In this respect, the reduction of risk to acceptable levels directly affects the quality of citizens’ lives and decreases losses in the industry. This study starts from the threats to power systems, namely cyberattacks, which are much more dangerous, although less visible, to operators, and almost invisible to the public or the media. From this point of view, it was proved that the most vulnerable parts of the power system were human−machine interfaces, electrical equipment, Surveillance, Control, and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Partial Discharge Analysis and Simulation Using the Consecutive Pulses Correlation Method
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: direct current, partial discharges, pulse sequence analysis, Simulation
The behaviour of partial discharge as consequences of an alternating current (AC) is already well defined. AC partial discharges have completely different behaviour, background physics and parameters than partial discharges (PD) under direct current (DC) stress. This paper focuses on the most used and promising evaluation method of the PD DC stress—pulse sequence analysis (PSA). The first step is understanding and verifying the mechanisms and principles of this method. It is provided by well-known fundamentals of AC PD and by comparison with the other diagnostic and fault-locating methods such as phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and pulse diagrams. The paper shows the PSA simulations and PD analyses performed at AC and partly at DC test conditions on typical PD test arrangements such as corona, surface and internal discharges. It is shown that the simulations performed, compared and validated with data obtained from measurements on different PD arrangements are a good match. Thi... [more]

Immobilising Microalgae and Cyanobacteria as Biocomposites: New Opportunities to Intensify Algae Biotechnology and Bioprocessing
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bioreactor, Carbon Capture, Carbon Dioxide, eutrophication, immobilization, latex polymers, Process Intensification, Wastewater
There is a groundswell of interest in applying phototrophic microorganisms, specifically microalgae and cyanobacteria, for biotechnology and ecosystem service applications. However, there are inherent challenges associated with conventional routes to their deployment (using ponds, raceways and photobioreactors) which are synonymous with suspension cultivation techniques. Cultivation as biofilms partly ameliorates these issues; however, based on the principles of process intensification, by taking a step beyond biofilms and exploiting nature inspired artificial cell immobilisation, new opportunities become available, particularly for applications requiring extensive deployment periods (e.g., carbon capture and wastewater bioremediation). We explore the rationale for, and approaches to immobilised cultivation, in particular the application of latex-based polymer immobilisation as living biocomposites. We discuss how biocomposites can be optimised at the design stage based on mass transfe... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: drive system, dynamic properties, resonance zones, synthesis, torsional vibration
A method for selecting dynamic parameters and structures of drive systems using the synthesis algorithm is presented. The dynamic parameters of the system with six degrees of freedom, consisting of a power component (motor) and a two-speed gearbox, were determined, based on a formalized methodology. The required gearbox is to work in specific resonance zones, i.e., meet the required dynamic properties such as the required resonance frequencies. In the result of the tests, a series of parameters of the drive system, defining the required dynamic properties such as the resonance and anti-resonance frequencies were recorded. Mass moments of inertia of the wheels and elastic components, contained in the required structure of the driving system, were determined for the selected parameters obtained during the synthesis.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current and speed estimation, fault-tolerant control, induction motor drive, model reference adaptive system, vector control
This paper introduces a new solution for the speed and current sensor fault-tolerant direct field-oriented control of induction motor drives. Two self-adjusting observers derived from a modified current-based model reference adaptive system (CB-MRAS) are presented. Finally, the recursive least squares method was used to estimate the parameters of the used observers. The method, in the proposed solution, provides a very fast and accurate finding of the observer parameters while maintaining relative simplicity and ease of implementation. The presented algorithm eliminates the CB-MRAS observer dependence on the induction motor parameters and also compensates for the inaccuracies in the evaluation of the stator voltage vector. The proposed fault-tolerant control offers the drive operation while either a speed sensor or one/two current sensors fault occurs. The drive still works with the direct field-oriented control even when no current sensors are healthy. The proposed scheme was simulate... [more]

Keywords: active distribution systems, decentralized control, distributed energy resources, hierarchical decomposition, voltage control
Voltage control is becoming a key issue in active distribution systems, which are electric distribution networks characterized by a large penetration of DERs. Traditional voltage control devices, as well as the active and reactive powers injected by DERs, can be used as ancillary services to support voltage profiles along the distribution feeders. Due to the peculiar characteristics of active distribution systems, the decentralized control approach presents the most promising technical and economical features. In the paper, the decentralized voltage control structure is hierarchically decomposed into different control levels, characterized by different objectives and time frames. On 4 November 2016, the historic Paris Climate Agreement of the United Nations entered into force, requiring signatory countries to maintain global warming at the level of 1.5−2 °C. According to the calculations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), to achieve this goal, a 2/3 reduction in greenhouse gas energy emissions into the atmosphere compared with gaseous energy-related emissions in 2019 (33.3 Gt) by about 2050 (1.5 °C) or by 2070 (2 °C) is required. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), this is only possible with the implementation of a great energy transition from the use of currently dominant fossil hydrocarbon fuels—coal, oil, and natural gas—to the predominant use of renewable energy sources (RES) by 2040−2050, when the share of renewable energy in the total energy balance will reach 40% and above. Keywords: anaerobic digestion, cow manure, methane, nutrients, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rice straw, temperature, trace elements
Rice straw is an agricultural residue produced in abundant quantities. Open burning and plowing back the straw to the fields are common practices for its disposal. In-situ incorporation and burning cause emissions of greenhouse gas and particulate matter. Additionally, the energy potential of rice straw is lost. Anaerobic digestion is a technology that can be potentially used to utilize the surplus rice straw, provide renewable energy, circulate nutrients available in the digestate, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from rice paddies. An innovative temperature phased anaerobic digestion technology was developed and carried out in a continuous circulating mode of mesophilic and hyperthermophilic conditions in a loop digester (F1). The near and mid-term future of the existing Polish coal-fired power fleet is uncertain. The longer-term operation of unabated coal power is incompatible with climate policy and is economically challenging because of the increasing price of CO2 emission allowances in the EU. The results of the techno-economic analysis presented in this paper indicate that the retrofit of existing coal-fired units, by means of replacing coal-fired boilers with small modular reactors, may be an interesting option for the Polish energy sector. It has been shown that the retrofit can reduce the costs in relation to greenfield investments by as much as 35%. This analysis focuses on the repowering of a 460 MW supercritical coal-fired unit based on the Łagisza power plant design with high temperature small modular nuclear reactors based on the 320 MWth unit design by Kairos Power. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flywheel, grid frequency, grid service, inertia, low voltage ride through, mechanical stress, power system stabilizer, variable inertia, vibration, wind turbine
Wind power penetration increases in most grids and the sizes of wind turbines increase. This leads to increasingly tough requirements, which are imposed on wind turbines, both from the grid as well as from economics. Some of these partially contradictory requirements can only be satisfied with additional control mechanisms in the wind turbines. In this paper, such a mechanism, i.e., a hydraulic−pneumatic flywheel system in the rotor of a wind turbine, is discussed. This flywheel system supports a wind turbine in providing grid services such as steadying the power infeed, fast frequency response, continuous inertia provision, power system stabilization, and low voltage ride-through. In addition, it can help mitigate the stress on the mechanical structure of a wind turbine, which results from varying operating points, imbalances in the rotor, gravitation that acts on the blades, in-plane vibrations, and emergency braking. The study presented in this paper is based on simulations of a pub... [more]
