April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomass waste, gasification, Psidium guajava L., supercritical, Water
Biomass waste, as raw material for renewable energy, is an attractive alternative since it does not compete with human food supply. An emerging alternative for its treatment is supercritical water gasification (SCWG), due to the high moisture content of some types of biomass. On this regards, guava fruit (Psidium guajava L.) is one of the most wasted agro-food products in Mexico. This motivated us to evaluate gasification of guava waste on dry biomass base under supercritical water conditions for the first time, with the aim of analyzing the impact of moderate temperatures and feed ratios as reaction parameters on gas products. Temperature was varied in the range of 673.15−773.15 K and using a batch reactor loaded with biomass:water (B:W) mass ratios of 1:1, 1:4, and 1:6. Furthermore, the obtained solid, liquid, and gas phase products were characterized. Hydrogen (H2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), and butane (C4H10) were... [more]
Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Hydrate-Bearing Sand: The Influence of Sand-Water Mixing Methods
Weiguo Liu, Dedong Pan, Shi Shen, Zeshao You, Yuechao Zhao, Xiang Sun
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrate distribution, hydrate-bearing sample, NMR, sand–water mixture methods, triaxial test
Laboratory-synthesized specimens are employed for an experimental study on the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments (HBS) due to the difficulty of field coring. A representative synthesized sample for the analysis of the mechanical properties of HBS in the experimental study requires evenly distributed hydrates in the pores of the sample. However, a specimen made with an improper sand−water mixing method might have an uneven water distribution, resulting in an uneven hydrate distribution when applying the ice-seeding method for hydrate formation. This study adopted three kinds of methods to mix sand and water before forming hydrates and applied the low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique to investigate how these methods affect the hydrate distribution, further affecting the mechanical properties. To analyze the mechanical properties of HBS, we conducted drained triaxial tests. As shown in low-field NMR, when we compacted a sample of the sand−water mixture and... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: crossed T-shaped patch, E-shaped slot, flexible materials, reconfigurable antennas, rectangular-shaped notches, textile antenna
In this article, a novel frequency slot-based switchable antenna fabricated on flexible and nonflexible materials is presented for suitable reconfigurable radiations of Bluetooth, WiMAX, and upper WLAN applications. Initially, the performance of this structure was simulated using a CSTTM simulator and evaluated experimentally using a nonflexible FR4 structure. The same antenna was implemented on a flexible (jean) substrate with a relative permittivity of 1.7. The proposed textile antenna prototypes were fabricated by optimal dimensions of an E-shaped slot with a variation on the shape of the ground layer, integrated using a crossed T-shaped strip with ON/OFF switchable state operations. The proposed antenna prototype is compact (20 × 20 mm2), providing switchable radiations with tri bands, has frequencies ranged at 2.36−2.5 GHz for Bluetooth, 3.51−3.79 GHz and 5.47−5.98 GHz for the distinct bands of WiMAX and WLAN, respectively, as well as part of UWB operations.

Jinkyu Lee, Yondo Chun, Jiwon Kim, Byounggun Park
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, energy harvesting, linear electromagnetic generator, maximum power point tracking, power converter
This paper investigates an energy-harvesting system that uses of vibration energy at a shock absorber for electric vehicles. This system mainly comprises a linear electromagnetic generator and synchronous buck converter. To obtain the electrical energy through a linear electromagnetic generator, the perturb and observe maximum power point tracking (P&O MPPT) scheme is applied at the converter. The power converter circuit is designed with a diode rectifier and synchronous buck converter. The generated electric power is able to transmit to the battery and the damping force of the shock absorber is adjusted by the controlled current of generator. The linear electromagnetic generator was designed as a single phase eight-slot eight-pole tubular permanent magnet machine. The performance of the proposed energy-harvesting system was verified through simulations and experiments.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic state-space model, reduced-order model, relaxation time, substitutive coefficients network (SCN), thermal behavior modeling, thermal building simulation
A modelling approach based on the Substitutive Coefficients Network (SCN) is developed to predict the thermal behavior of a system in the dynamic state-space, without requiring knowledge of the thermal mass. The method can apply either to large- (building, combined solar systems, geothermal energy, and thermodynamic installations) or to small-scale systems (heat exchangers, electronic devices cooling systems, and Li-ion batteries). This current method is based on a dimensionless formulation of the simplified dynamic thermal balance model, using relaxation time as a key parameter to establish the model. The introduction of relaxation time reduces the parameters set as guidance coefficients. The parameters are finally expressed by a combination of global heat transfer coefficients related to each layer and/or sub-layer of the system. Advantages of the method are reliability, “non-destructibility”, i.e., it allows a reliable prediction of the thermal behavior which experimentally is inacc... [more]

Andrés E. Díez, Mauricio Restrepo
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Batteries, bus rapid transit, electric bus, in-motion charging, overhead lines, traction substation
This paper presents an electrical infrastructure planning method for transit systems that operate with partially grid-connected vehicles incorporating on-board batteries. First, the state-of-the-art of electric transit systems that combine grid-connected and battery-based operation is briefly described. Second, the benefits of combining a grid connection and battery supply in Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems are introduced. Finally, the planning method is explained and tested in a BRT route in Medellin, Colombia, using computational simulations in combination with real operational data from electric buses that are currently operating in this transit line. Unlike other methods and approaches for Battery Electric Bus (BEB) infrastructure planning, the proposed technique is system-focused, rather than solely limited to the vehicles. The objective of the technique, from the vehicle’s side, is to assist the planner in the correct sizing of batteries and power train capacity, whereas from the... [more]
Linear Induction Motors in Transportation Systems
Ryszard Palka, Konrad Woronowicz
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: end effect, finite element analysis, linear induction motors
This paper provides an overview of the Linear Transportation System (LTS) and focuses on the application of a Linear Induction Motor (LIM) as a major constituent of LTS propulsion. Due to their physical characteristics, linear induction motors introduce many physical phenomena and design constraints that do not occur in the application of the rotary motor equivalent. The efficiency of the LIM is lower than that of the equivalent rotary machine, but, when the motors are compared as integrated constituents of the broader transportation system, the rotary motor’s efficiency advantage diminishes entirely. Against this background, several solutions to the problems still existing in the application of traction linear induction motors are presented based on the scientific research of the authors. Thus, solutions to the following problems are presented here: (a) development of new analytical solutions and finite element methods for LIM evaluation; (b) comparison between the analytical and nume... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: low-GWP, low-ODP, maximum performance, optimum super-heater pressure, organic Rankine cycle, working fluids
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely accepted to produce electricity from low-grade thermal heat sources. In fact, it is a developed technology for waste-heat to electricity conversions. In this paper, an ORC made up of super-heater, turbine, regenerator, condenser, pump, economizer and evaporator is considered. An optimization model to obtain the maximum performance of such ORC, depending on the super-heater pressure, is proposed and assessed, in order to find possible new working fluids that are less pollutant with similar behavior to those traditionally used. The different super-heater pressures under analysis lie in between the condenser pressure and 80% of the critical pressure of each working fluid, taking 100 values uniformly distributed. The system and optimization algorithm have been simulated in Matlab with the CoolProp library. Results show that the twelve working fluids can be categorized into four main groups, depending on the saturation pressure at ambient conditions... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive-PI controller, adaptive-sliding mode controller, grid-connected, phase lock loop, photovoltaic system, proportional resonant controller, second-order general integral
To enhance the move towards a sustainable society, the solar Photovoltaic (PV) industry and its applications are progressing at a rapid rate. However, the associated issues need to be addressed when connecting PV to the grid. Advanced and efficient controllers are required for the DC link to control the second harmonic ripple and current controllers to inject quality active and reactive power to the grid in the grid-connected PV system. In this paper, DC-link voltage, active power, and reactive power are successfully controlled in stationary reference using Adaptive-PI (A-PI) and Adaptive-Sliding Mode Controller (A-SMC) for a 3 kW single-phase two-stage transformerless grid-connected inverter. A Resonant Harmonic Compensator (RHC)-based Proportional Resonant (PR) controller is employed in the current-controlled loop. The magnitude, phase, and frequency information of the grid voltage are provided by Second-Order General Integral (SOGI)-based PLL that has harmonic immunity, fast-trackin... [more]

José Marco Lourenço, Laura Aelenei, Miguel Sousa, Jorge Facão, Helder Gonçalves
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building-integrated photovoltaic system, buildings, integrated façades, nZEB, water storage
Buildings play an active role in the global energy consumption and are required to not only minimize their energy use, but also generate energy in a sustainable manner. The integration of renewable energies in building elements can improve their overall performance, as they are able to replace common construction materials, while offering both electrical and thermal energy. The scope of this paper is to present the first results of an experimental study of a Building-Integrated Photovoltaic system combined with a water storage tank (BIPV-WS), a combined integration not extensively studied yet. Both layers are separated by a ventilated air cavity, and the thermal behavior of the system was analyzed experimentally in real functioning conditions. The water tank performs as a thermal storage, maintaining a regular temperature of about 20−30 °C during a typical winter day of Lisbon for a period of 11 h. Moreover, through the ventilation of the air cavity, the heat provided by the solar pane... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: co-pyrolysis, ionic liquids, kinetic analysis, pretreatment, sugarcane bagasse, thermogravimetric analysis
Pyrolysis behavior of ionic liquid (IL) pretreated coal and sugarcane bagasse (SCB) blends through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was studied. Three blends of coal and SCB having 3:1, 1:1, and 1:3 ratios by weight were treated with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim][Cl]) at 150 °C for 3 h. Untreated and IL treated blends were then analyzed under pyrolytic conditions in a TGA at a constant ramp rate of 20 °C/min. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were evaluated using ten Coats-Redfern (CR) models to assess reaction mechanism. Results showed that the untreated blends followed a definite pattern and were proportional to the concentration of SCB in the blends. IL treated blends exhibited a higher average rate of degradation and total weight loss, indicating that IL had disrupted the cross-linking structure of coal and lignocellulosic structure of SCB. This will enhance the energy generation potential of biomass through thermochemical conversion processes. The lower activatio... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, DEMO-EU fusion reactor, IFMIF-DONES facility, lithium technology, thermo-fluid dynamics
A detailed study of lithium-related topics in the IFMIF-DONES facility is currently being promoted and supported within the EUROfusion action, paying attention to different pivotal aspects including lithium flow stability and the monitoring and extraction of impurities. The resistivity meter is a device able to monitor online non-metallic impurities (mainly nitrogen) in flowing lithium. It relies on the variation of the electric resistivity produced by dissolved anions: the higher the concentration of impurities in lithium, the higher the resistivity measured. The current configuration of the resistivity meter has shown different measuring issues during its operation. All these issues reduce the accuracy of the measurements performed with this instrument and introduce relevant noise affecting the resistance value. This paper proposes different upgrades, supported by CFD simulations, to optimize lithium flow conditions and to reduce measurement problems. Owing to these upgrades, a new d... [more]

Karol Ulatowski, Radosław Jeżak, Paweł Sobieszuk
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANOVA, DoE, electrolysis, nanobubble
(1) The generation of nanobubbles by electrolysis is an interesting method of using electrical energy to form bubble nuclei, effectively creating a multiphase system. For every process, the effectiveness of nanobubble generation by electrolysis depends on various process parameters that impact should be determined. (2) In this work, the electrolytic generation of hydrogen and oxygen bubbles was performed in a self-built setup, in which a Nafion membrane separated two chambers. The generation of bubbles of both gases was investigated using Box−Behnken experimental design. Three independent variables were salt concentration, current density, and electrolysis time, while the dependent variables were Sauter diameters of generated bubbles. An ANOVA analysis and multivariate regression were carried out to propose a statistical and power model of nanobubble size as a process parameter function. (3) The generation of bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis showed that different factors... [more]
Practical Aspects of Cylinder Deactivation and Reactivation
Norbert Zsiga, Johannes Ritzmann, Patrik Soltic
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control strategy, cylinder deactivation, engine control, experimental analysis, gas spring operation, mode switching, skip-firing
Cylinder deactivation is an effective measure to reduce the fuel consumption of internal combustion engines. This paper deals with several practical aspects of switching from conventional operation to operation with deactivated cylinders, i.e., gas spring operation with closed intake and exhaust valves. The focus of this paper lies on one particular quantity-controlled stoichiometrically-operated engine where the load is controlled using the valve timing. Nevertheless, the main results are transferable to other engines and engine types, including quality-controlled engines. The first aspect of this paper is an analysis of the transition from fired to gas spring operation, and vice versa, as well as the gas spring operation itself. This is essential for mode changes, such as cylinder deactivation or skip-firing operation. Simulation results show that optimizing the valve timing in the last cycle before deactivating/first cycle after reactivating a cylinder, respectively, is advantageous... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault coverage, global energy production, hybrid testing, smart home automation system, solar reliability factor, solar tracker
This paper presents a modified global energy production computation formula that replaces the traditional Performance Ratio (PR) with a novel Solar Reliability Factor (SRF) for mobile solar tracking systems. The SRF parameter describes the reliability and availability of a dual-axis solar tracker, which powers a smart home automation system entirely by using clean energy. By applying the SRF in the global energy production formula of solar tracking systems, we can predict the energy generation in real time, allowing proper energy management of the entire smart home automation system. Regarding static deployed Photovoltaic (PV) systems, the PR factor is preserved to compute the power generation of these devices accurately. Experimental results show that the energy production computation constantly fluctuates over several days due to the SRF parameter variation, showing a 26.11% reduction when the dual-axis solar tracker’s availability is affected by system errors and maximum power gener... Zhengjie Li, Zhisheng Zhang
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: day-ahead and intra-day dispatch, integrated demand response, integrated energy system, load forecasting, multi load
At present, due to the errors of wind power, solar power and various types of load forecasting, the optimal scheduling results of the integrated energy system (IES) will be inaccurate, which will affect the economic and reliable operation of the integrated energy system. In order to solve this problem, a day-ahead and intra-day optimal scheduling model of integrated energy system considering forecasting uncertainty is proposed in this paper, which takes the minimum operation cost of the system as the target, and different processing strategies are adopted for the model. In the day-ahead time scale, according to day-ahead load forecasting, an integrated demand response (IDR) strategy is formulated to adjust the load curve, and an optimal scheduling scheme is obtained. In the intra-day time scale, the predicted value of wind power, solar power and load power are represented by fuzzy parameters to participate in the optimal scheduling of the system, and the output of units is adjusted bas... Felix Charvet, Felipe Silva, Luís Ruivo, Luís Tarelho, Arlindo Matos, José Figueiredo da Silva, Daniel Neves
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, carbonization, charcoal, pyrolysis, woody residues
Charcoal production in Portugal is mostly based on the valorization of woody residues from cork oak and holm oak, the latter being considered a reference feedstock in the market. Nevertheless, since wildfire prevention became a priority in Portugal, after the recent dramatic wildfires, urgent actions are being conducted to reduce the fuel load in the forests, which is increasing the amount of biomass that is available for valorization. Additionally, biomass residues from agriculture, forest management, control of invasive species, partially burnt wood from post-fire recovery actions, and waste wood from storm devastated forests need also to be considered within the national biomass valorization policies. This has motivated the present work on whether the carbonization process can be used to valorize alternative woody biomasses not currently used on a large scale. For this purpose, slow pyrolysis experiments were carried out with ten types of wood, using a fixed bed reactor allowing the... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: building thermal load, carbon dioxide emissions, cogeneration, demand response, electrical efficiency, grid efficiency, heat pump, onsite power, primary energy, return on investment
Electrical and thermal loads of residential buildings present a unique opportunity for onsite power generation, and concomitant thermal energy generation, storage, and utilization, to decrease primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide intensity. This approach also improves resiliency and ability to address peak load burden effectively. Demand response programs and grid-interactive buildings are also essential to meet the energy needs of the 21st century while addressing climate impact. Given the significance of the scale of building energy consumption, this study investigates how cogeneration systems influence the primary energy consumption and carbon footprint in residential buildings. The impact of onsite power generation capacity, its electrical and thermal efficiency, and its cost, on total primary energy consumption, equivalent carbon dioxide emissions, operating expenditure, and, most importantly, thermal and electrical energy balance, is presented. The conditions at which a... [more]

Bor-Ren Lin, Yi-Kuan Lin
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circulating current, phase-shift PWM converter, resonant converter, ZVS
A full-bridge converter with an additional resonant circuit and variable secondary turns is presented and achieved to have soft-switching operation on active devices, wide voltage input operation and low freewheeling current loss. The resonant tank is linked to the lagging-leg of the full bridge pulse-width modulation converter to realize zero-voltage switching (ZVS) characteristic on the power switches. Therefore, the wide ZVS operation can be accomplished in the presented circuit over the whole input voltage range and output load. To overcome the wide voltage variation on renewable energy applications such as DC wind power and solar power conversion, two winding sets are used on the output-side of the proposed converter to obtain the different voltage gains. Therefore, the wide voltage input from 90 to 450 V (Vin,max = 5Vin,min) is implemented in the presented circuit. To further improve the freewheeling current loss issue in the conventional phase-shift pulse-width modulation conver... [more]

José Antonio Peña-Ramos, María del Pino-García, Antonio Sánchez-Bayón
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy transition, EU Green Deal, geopolitics, political economy, renewable energies
Climate change, clean energy transition, the energy security quest, and international relations have triggered the revival of renewable energy as a solution to these problems. Nowadays, there is an energy transition where renewable energies bring geopolitical changes in a world where fossil fuels are becoming less relevant. This article aims to assess how the transition influences Spain’s energy relations with other countries regarding electricity and its sources, in alignment with the European Green Deal. In order to do so, its current energy situation, the renewable energies development and its energy import-export relations are examined. The results show that despite progress in green regionalization through more electric interconnection, little difference is to be found in traditional relations with fossil fuel countries exporters, but more are the contractions in Spanish energy economic policy, as here is explained.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collection efficiency, gas cleanup, moving granular bed filter, two-stage granules
We propose a dust removal technology in which a two-stage moving granular bed filter was employed using coarse and fine filtering granules. The pressure drop, collection efficiency, and dust particulate size distributions were investigated using various mass flow rates for coarse and fine granules at room temperature. In addition, the ratio of mass consumption was used to reveal the actual mass flow. The ratio of mass consumption influenced the pressure drop, collection efficiency, and dust particulate size distributions. Particulates larger than 1.775 μm were removed by the filter. Our results showed that a mass flow of 330 g/min for coarse granules and a mass flow of 1100 g/min for fine granules provided optimal collection efficiency and particulate size distribution. The proposed design can aid the development of high-temperature systems in power plants.
The Impact of the Climate Action Programme 2030 and Federal State Measures on the Uptake of Renewable Heating Systems in Lower Saxony’s Building Stock

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: building stock, Climate Action Program 2030, federal state, heating systems, Lower Saxony, renewables
A heating transition is urgently needed to fulfil the national CO2 reduction targets in Germany. Thus, in 2019, there has been a strong policy push towards increasing the share of renewables in heating through the introduction of the Climate Action Programme 2030 and the reform of existing policies. In addition to the policy landscape on the national level, federal states have further leeway to implement policies; these options are currently largely unresearched. In order to fill this gap, we developed a System Dynamics Model for Lower Saxony to determine the effect of recent policy changes as well as additional regional subsidy schemes on the heating market. The results show that even though changes in subsidies can increase the renewable uptake considerably, the CO2e and energy demand reduction targets are not met in any of the examined scenarios. Furthermore, the model shows that policy formulation must take the inertia of the sector into account and completely turn away from fossil... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: particle emission sources, PM10, PM2.5, urban air quality
Despite the introduction of increasingly restrictive regulations, the air quality in Poland is still considered one of the worst in Europe. Two cities (Wroclaw and Cracow) were selected for this study, so they represent a pair of Polish cities with poor air quality, and at the same time are academic cities, popular with tourists. The article focuses on the emission of particulate matter, which is one of the most dangerous components of air pollution. The focus was on particles less than 10 µm in diameter which are most often neglected at measuring stations. We have identified the sources of particulate emissions in selected locations in Wroclaw and Cracow, and then measured particles in terms of their mass and number distribution. It was noted that the PM10 emission values obtained as a result of the measurements were different from the value specified by the Inspectorate of the Environmental Protection in Poland.

Keywords: coal mine, distance measuring, indoor locating system, roadheader, RTLS, ultrasonic transducers
Determining the location of objects, for example roadheader in a hard coal mine, is a task that should be automated in the conditions of state-of-the-art mining. Current solutions do not meet the user’s expectations due to the lack of the possibility of automation, maladjustment to the environment of a hard coal mine or not meeting the legal requirements. The article describes the initial stage of work on an automatic system for determining the position of machines in difficult underground conditions, including the analysis of requirements and constraints, an overview of available solutions, technologies and algorithms, as a result of which devices were selected for further tests. To determine the location, it is necessary to take distance measurements with high accuracy, despite the disturbances resulting from the working environment. Ultrasonic devices were selected and then tested under various operating conditions, including different distances between the transmitter and receiver... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: BIPV, building envelope materials, building integrated photovoltaics, building skins, LCOE, levelised cost of electricity, net present value, NPV, solar energy potential
Building integrated photovoltaics is one of the key technologies when it comes to electricity generation in buildings, districts or urban areas. However, the potential of building façades for the BIPV system, especially in urban areas, is often neglected. Façade-mounted building integrated photovoltaics could contribute to supply the energy demand of buildings in dense urban areas with economic feasibility where the availability of suitable rooftop areas is low. This paper deals with the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) of building integrated photovoltaic systems (BIPV) in the capitals of all the European member state countries plus Norway and Switzerland and presents a metric to investigate a proper subsidy or incentive for BIPV systems. The results showed that the average LCOE of the BIPV system as a building envelope material for the entire outer skin of buildings in Europe is equal to 0.09 Euro per kWh if its role as the power generator is considered in the economic calculation...
