Design of All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells Approaching 14% Efficiency via Isometric Terminal Alkyl Chain Engineering
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkyl chains, morphology, organic solar cell, small-molecule donor
Morphology is crucial to determining the photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, manipulating morphology involving only small-molecule donors and acceptors is extremely challenging. Herein, a simple terminal alkyl chain engineering process is introduced to fine-tune the morphology towards high-performance all-small-molecule (ASM) OSCs. We successfully chose a chlorinated two-dimension benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) central unit and two isomeric alkyl cyanoacetate as the end-capped moieties to conveniently synthesize two isomeric small-molecule donors, namely, BT-RO-Cl and BT-REH-Cl, each bearing linear n-octyl (O) as the terminal alkyl chain and another branched 2-ethylhexyl (EH) as the terminal alkyl chain. The terminal alkyl chain engineering process provided BT-RO-Cl with 13.35% efficiency and BT-REH-Cl with 13.90% efficiency ASM OSCs, both with Y6 as the electron acceptor. The successful performance resulted from uniform phase separation and the favor... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BLDC, brushless DC, drone, heavy lift, heavy payload, motor, UAV, unmanned aerial vehicle
This paper describes the concept of a multilayer brushless DC motor which is suitable for use on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and capable of carrying a heavy payload. The paper deals with a unique multilayer structure, using three standard stators placed in parallel with a single rotor body, to increase the torque even under low-speed conditions. In this solution, nine inner windings can use different star/delta interconnections to optimize the performance of the BLDC motor on demand. The proposed multilayer BLDC motor solution utilizes the main advantages of BLDC motors, ensuring highly reliable operation, and thus enabling a BLDC motor to be applied to UAVs. This paper gives an overview of the design, assumes an extension with an electronic inner winding switching capability, and provides practical details about realization, testing, and experimental verification. Practical measurements and obtained data are utilized to confirm the approach.

Simulation and Economic Research of Circulating Cooling Water Waste Heat and Water Resource Recovery System
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen Plus, COP, economic analysis, heat pump, waste heat
Industrial circulating cooling water contains a large amount of low-quality energy, which is lost to the environment through cooling towers. It is of great significance and potential to recover the waste heat to improve energy-saving effects and economic efficiency. However, the effect of common water harvesting and energy saving devices is not significant. Heat pumps have been shown to be effective in improving low-quality heat energy in energy conversion systems, although there are not many applications of heat pump scenarios in engineering practice. Based on this, a recovery solution of circulating cooling water waste heat and water resource using lithium bromide absorption heat pump has been put forward. The energy-saving performance of the recovery system was simulated and analyzed using Aspen Plus V10.0 (Bedford, MA, USA) to explore the effects of the parameters of the working medium in evaporators, condensers, absorbers, generators, heat exchangers, etc., and the modelling resul... April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-cooled, aviation, multiphase, PEMFC, specific power, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
One of the marketing challenges of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for various applications is enhancing flight durability. Due to the superior characteristics of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), they have the potential to reach a longer flight time and higher payload. In this regard, a numerical assessment of a UAV air-cooled PEMFC is carried out using a three-dimensional (3-D), multiphase, and non-isothermal model on three flow fields, i.e., unblocked bean-shaped, blocked bean-shaped, and parallel. Then, the results of single-cell modeling are generalized to the PEMFC stack to provide the power of 2.5 kW for a UAV. The obtained results indicate that the strategy of rising air stoichiometry for cooling performs well in the unblocked bean-shaped design, and the maximum temperature along the channel length reaches 331.5 K at the air stoichiometric of 30. Further, it is found that the best performance of a 2.5 kW PEMFC stack is attained by the bean-shaped design without bloc... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: auxiliary support, battery storage systems, centralized control algorithms, IEC 61850, Internet of Things, scheduling algorithm, smartgrid communications
As the number of EVs increases, their impact on electrical systems will be substantial. Novel management schemes are needed to manage the electrical load they require when charging. Literature is rich with different techniques to manage and control this effect on the grid by controlling and optimizing power flow. Although these solutions heavily rely on communication lines, they mostly treat communication as a black box. It is important to develop communication solutions that can integrate EVs, charging stations (CSs), and the rest of the grid in an interoperable way. A standard approach would be indispensable as there are different EV models manufactured by different companies. The IEC 61850 standard is a strong tool used for developing communication models for different smart grid components. However, it does not have the necessary models for implementing smart EV management schemes that coordinate between EVs and CSs. In this paper, these missing links are addressed through the deve... A Spectral Model of Grid Frequency for Assessing the Impact of Inertia Response on Wind Turbine Dynamics
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid frequency, inertia response, rate of change in frequency, spectral model, wind turbine
The recent developments in renewable energy have led to a higher proportion of converter-connected power generation sources in the grid. Operating a high renewable energy penetration power system and ensuring the frequency stability could be challenging due to the reduced system inertia, which is usually provided by the conventional synchronous generators. Previous studies have shown the potential of wind turbines to provide an inertia response to the grid based on the measured rate of change of the grid frequency. This is achieved by controlling the kinetic energy extraction from the rotating parts by its converters. In this paper, we derive a spectral-based model of the grid frequency by analyzing historical measurements. The spectral model is then used to generate realistic, generic, and stochastic signals of the grid frequency for typical aero-elastic simulations of wind turbines. The spectral model enables the direct assessment of the additional impact of the inertia response cont... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic codigestion, inhibition, kinetics, resource recovery, slaughterhouse wastewater, tannery wastewater
Anaerobic digestion is considered unsuitable for the bioremediation of tannery effluent due to process inhibition, mainly due to high concentrations of sulfur species, and the accumulation of H2S and/or NH3. This study using the standardized biochemical methane potential protocol showed that efficient processing is possible with slaughterhouse wastewater, provided sufficient functional biomass is present at the start of the process and the SO42− concentration is below inhibition threshold. Methanogenic activity (K = 13.4−17.5 and µm = 0.15−0.27) and CH4 yields were high when reactors were operated ISR ≥ 3 and/or lower SO42− ≤ 710 mg/L while high SO42− ≥ 1960 mg/L and ISR < 3.0 caused almost complete inhibition regardless of corresponding ISR and SO42−. The theoretical optimum operating conditions (922 mg/L SO42−, ISR = 3.72) are expected to generate 361 mL biogas/gVS, 235 mL CH4/gVS with reduction efficiencies of 27.5% VS, 27.4% TS, 75.1% TOC, 75.6% SO42−, and 41.1% COD. April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: balance of power supply and demand, economic load dispatch (ELD), microgrids, operation schedule of microgrids, particle swarm optimization (PSO), treatment of uncertainty, unit commitment (UC)
Operation scheduling in electric power grids is one of the most practical optimization problems as it sets a target for the efficient management of the electric power supply and demand. Advancement of a method to solve this issue is crucially required, especially in microgrids. This is because the operational capability of microgrids is generally lower than that of conventional bulk power grids, and therefore, it is extremely important to develop an appropriate, coordinated operation schedule of the microgrid components. Although various techniques have been developed to solve the problem, there is no established solution. The authors propose a problem framework and a solution method that finds the optimal operation schedule of the microgrid components considering the uncertainty in the available data. In the authors’ proposal, the objective function of the target problem is formulated as the expected cost of the microgrid’s operations. Since the risk of imbalance in the power supply a... [more]

Smart meters are used to measure the energy consumption of households. Specifically, within the energy consumption task, a smart meter must be used for load forecasting, the reduction in consumer bills as well as the reduction in grid distortions. Smart meters can be used to disaggregate the energy consumption at the device level. In this paper, we investigated the potential of identifying the multimedia content played by a TV or monitor device using the central house’s smart meter measuring the aggregated energy consumption from all working appliances of the household. The proposed architecture was based on the elastic matching of aggregated energy signal frames with 20 reference TV channel signals. Different elastic matching algorithms, which use symmetric distance measures, were used with the best achieved video content identification accuracy of 93.6% using the MVM algorithm.
