April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CCGT-CHPP, Energy Efficiency, heat pump unit, low-potential heat source, thermal power plant, vapor compression
This paper studies the integration of heat pump units (HPUs) to enhance the thermal efficiency of a combined heat and power plant (CHPP). Different solutions of integrate the HPUs in a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, the CCGT-450, are analyzed based on simulations developed on “United Cycle” computer-aided design (CAD) system. The HPUs are used to explore low-potential heat sources (LPHSs) and heat make-up and return network water. The use of HPUs to regulate the gas turbine (GT) intake air temperature during the summer operation and the possibility of using a HPU to heat the GT intake air and replace anti-icing system (AIS), over the winter at high humidity conditions were also analyzed. The best solution was obtained for the winter operation mode replacing the AIS by a HPU. The simulation results indicated that this scheme can reduce the underproduction of electricity generation by the CCGT unit up to 14.87% and enhance the overall efficiency from 40.00% to 44.82%. Using a H... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drag reduction, nonionic surfactant, pressure drop, rheology, zwitterionic surfactant
The study presents results of rheological tests and measurements of pressure drops occurring during the flow of aqueous solutions of a mixture of drag reducing surfactants: cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB, zwitterionic surfactant) and cocamide DEA (nonionic surfactant) through straight pipes. Tests were carried out at different CAPB/DEA weight ratios and different total concentrations of surfactants in the solution. Rheological measurements demonstrate the formation of a shear-induced structure (SIS) in the temperature range below 10 °C, which provides evidence for the presence of wormlike micelles in CAPB/DEA solutions. Drag reduction was observed during the flow of CAPB/DEA solutions in the temperature range from 3 to 45 °C, however, above 25 °C the degree of drag reduction was markedly decreased. The lower temperature limit at which drag reduction occurs depends on the CAPB and DEA weight ratio in the solution. In the range of higher temperatures, during the flow of CAPB/DEA solutions... Fernando Martinez-Rodrigo, Dionisio Ramirez, Santiago de Pablo, Luis Carlos Herrero-de Lucas
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: modular multilevel converter (MMC), near level control (NLC), small wind turbine, wind farm
This paper presents a new way of organizing a wind farm with a large number of small to medium-sized turbines. Each wind generator has been included in a switching module of a modular multilevel converter (MMC), which generates the output voltage by near level control (NLC). The proposed topology reduces the number of semiconductors required, switching losses, and voltage filtering requirements. This topology replaces the usual configuration where each wind turbine is connected to a three-phase two-level back-to-back converter plus a filter and then connected in parallel with the other wind generators. To test the topology and its control performance, a case has been developed and simulated for generator configurations producing the same power, for generation imbalances between phases and for imbalances between arms. The analysis of the data shows that the converter works correctly and that it can deliver power to the grid in a balanced way even if the generation has imbalances. The ge... [more]

Keywords: dust pollution, environment, environmental factors, open-pit, particulate pollution, PM
The particulate pollution in the open-pit coal mines of China is particularly severe in winter. The aim of this study is to understand the pollution characteristics of particulate matter (PM) in winter and provide a basis for the prevention and control of particulate pollution. We took the problem of PM concentration at the bottom of the Haerwusu Open-pit Coal Mine (HOCM) as the research object. Dust monitoring equipment at two measurement points at different heights were positioned for continuous monitoring of the PM concentration. The data for three months were gathered. Statistical analyses were performed to analyze the variation characteristics of the PM and its relationship with meteorological factors. The results show that the average PM concentration in the study area is below the average daily limit of the China National Ambient Air Quality Standard (GB 3095-2012). However, the average concentration of PM10 exceeded the national limit in December. The order of PM concentration... [more]
Valuation of Energy Security for Natural Gas—European Example
Piotr Kosowski, Katarzyna Kosowska
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Energy, energy security, Europe, Natural Gas, UGS, underground gas storage, valuation
Recently there has been an ongoing discussion about energy security. This has been caused by tensions affecting international relations, and the emergence of new geopolitical threats. As one of the main sources of primary energy, natural gas is an obvious subject of interest in this discussion. In Europe, the natural gas market is rapidly evolving, which has resulted in a lack of clarity regarding who is responsible for the security of the gas supply. It is not clear now how to measure the security of the gas supply in economic estimates and by whom that security should be financed. In this paper, the authors present an approach which can be used for valuation of energy security concerning the security of natural gas storage using stochastic modelling based on the mathematical model of the “Newsvendor problem”. The valuation is made from the point of view of countries and considers their individual attitudes to the risk of disruption of deliveries, which is a novel approach to the prob... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumers’ behavior, environmental value, functional value, green energy, photovoltaic panels, theory of consumption values
Renewable energy sources help in decreasing negative environmental impacts and in reducing energy-import dependency. Among all renewable energy segments, photovoltaic panel (PV) installations are one of the fastest-growing. Growing concern about climate change, as well as public policies promoting the development of PV installations, have changed consumers’ behaviors and attitudes. This study uses the theory of consumption values to identify factors influencing consumers’ choice behavior regarding photovoltaic panel installations. There is little research on consumers’ perception of value related to green energy in Poland, especially in the case of photovoltaic panels. We fill this cognitive gap by testing an extended green consumption values model that includes functional, social, emotional, conditional, epistemic, and environmental values. The research was conducted on 250 Polish consumers using a self-administered questionnaire as the research tool. The results of structural equatio... [more]

Jinjing An, Guoping Chen, Zhuo Zou, Yaojie Sun, Ran Liu, Lirong Zheng
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Internet of Things, traceability system, wind turbine
In recent years, the application of traceability systems in the food and drug industry has developed rapidly, but it is rarely used for wind turbines. From the aspects of low information transparency and information islands in the supply chain process for wind turbines, a reliable traceability system is essential. However, the existing traceability systems are not suitable to be directly applied to wind turbines. Consequently, according to the characteristics of the wind power industry, a semi-centralized traceability architecture based on Internet of Things technology was proposed. Furthermore, a traceability platform was constructed by analyzing the information collected in each stage related to various user needs of wind turbines, and various applications, including manufacturing management and spare parts management, were developed. Compared with the existing systems, the proposed platform was wind-turbine-oriented, effectively improved traceability efficiency and enterprises’ info... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blockage mechanism, geothermal water reinjection, movable particles, risk assessment
The Xining Basin in Qinghai Province, China, is rich in mid−low temperature geothermal resources, but the reinjection of geothermal water has not yet started. In this paper, the physical properties of rocks sampled from the newly drilled geothermal well DR2018 were analyzed, and a series of core flooding experiments was conducted to assess the formation blockage risk during water reinjection. The experimental results show that the geothermal reservoir has a low porosity of 1.64−18.68% and a low permeability of 0.04−7.23 md. The rocks are weakly consolidated, and the movable clay and sand particles account for 0.18−23.42 wt %, which results in a significant rate and salinity sensitivity. Even at low water flow velocity of 0.31−1.64 cm/min, the core permeability will drop by 35−53% after 25-144PV injection. An obvious fluctuation and decline in core permeability can also be observed as the injected water salinity decreases. The blockage risk induced by the invasion of low-content scaling... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, cost overrun, dams, hydropower, investment appraisal, World Bank
This paper assesses the economic benefits of 57 World Bank Group-sponsored hydropower dam plant investments. Hydropower dams are among the main sources for producing electricity and the largest renewable source for power generation throughout the world. Hydropower dams are often a lower-cost option for power generation in Clean Energy Transition for addressing global climate change. Despite its conspicuous aspects, constructing hydropower dams has been controversial. Considering the World Bank’s long history as the largest hydropower development financier, this study investigates its performance in supporting hydropower dams. The outcomes of this study apply to the wider hydropower development community. Of the projects in this study, 70% experienced a cost overrun, and more than 80% of projects experienced time overruns, incurring potential additional costs as a result. Despite the high cost and time overruns, this hydropower portfolio of dams produced a present value of net economic... [more]
Implementation of Distributed Autonomous Control Based Battery Energy Storage System for Frequency Regulation
Hyung-Seung Kim, Junho Hong, In-Sun Choi
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, conservation voltage reduction, distributed controls, emergency generation, frequency regulation
It has been mandated that 5% of the generation capacity of conventional fossil fuel power plants shall be used exclusively for frequency regulation (FR) purposes in South Korea. However, the rotational speed of generators cannot be controlled quickly, and thus the variation in the power generation for FR takes some time. Even during this short period of time, frequency fluctuations may occur, and the frequency may be out of range of its reference value. In order to overcome the limitations of the existing FR method, 374 MW (103 MWh) battery energy storage systems (BESSs) for FR have been installed and are in operation at 13 sites in South Korea. When designing the capacity of BESS for FR, three key factors, i.e., the deployment time, duration of delivery, and end of delivery, are considered. When these times can be reduced, the required capacity for BESS installation can be decreased, achieving the same operational effects with minimal investment in the facilities. However, because a B... [more]

Adam Moyseowicz, Agata Moyseowicz
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bismuth sulfide, electrode material, Energy Storage
The high theoretical capacity of Bi2S3 shows high promise as a negative electrode material for energy storage devices. Herein, we investigate a facile, one-step chemical precipitation method using common organic solvents, such as acetone, ethanol, and isopropanol, for the synthesis of Bi2S3 nanostructures. The nanospherical Bi2S3 from acetone (Bi2S3-A) presents the most balanced electrochemical properties, exhibiting a high specific capacity of 181 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1 and decent rate capability. Additionally, Bi2S3-A is used as a negative electrode in an aqueous hybrid system with an activated carbon positive electrode, demonstrating a capacitance of 86 F g−1, a specific energy of 7.6 Wh kg−1, and an initial capacity retention of 74% after 1000 cycles.

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical generator, hybrid power unit, internal combustion engine, LiPo battery, multirotor UAV
A key drawback of multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with energy sources based solely on electrochemical batteries is related to the available on-board energy. Flight autonomy is typically limited to 15−30 min, with a flight duration upper limit of 90 min currently being achieved by high-performance battery-powered multirotor UAVs. Therefore, propulsion systems that utilize two or more different energy sources (hybrid power systems) may be considered as an alternative in order to increase the flight duration while retaining key performance benefits of battery energy storage use. The research presented in this work considers a multirotor UAV power unit, based on the internal combustion engine (ICE) powering an electricity generator (EG) connected to the common direct current (DC) bus in parallel with the lithium-polymer (LiPo) battery, and the respective modeling and identification of individual power unit subsystem, along with the dedicated control system design. Optimisation of Operation of Adsorption Chiller with Desalination Function
Karol Sztekler
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, chiller, desalination
The demand for electricity is growing rapidly along with economic development and increasing population. At present, its production is mainly based on non-renewable sources, which has negative impacts on the environment and contributes to global warming. A large proportion of the produced electricity is consumed by refrigeration equipment. Climate change and the progress of civilisation are additionally increasing the demand for cooling, with increasing electricity consumption as a consequence. One of the options for obtaining eco-friendly cooling is the use of adsorption chillers. These devices are powered by low-temperature heat and their operation only requires a small amount of electrical energy. The source of low-temperature heat can be, e.g., waste heat generated in many industrial processes. Its use allows one to increase energy efficiency and achieve additional financial benefits. However, adsorption chillers are characterised by low coefficients of performance. This paper pres... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Francis turbine, guide vanes, parametric design
This paper is focused on the guide vane cascade as one of the most crucial stationary sub-systems of the hydraulic turbine, which needs to provide efficient inflow hydraulic conditions to the runner. The guide vanes direct the flow from the spiral casing and the stay vanes towards the runner, regulating the desired discharge. A parametric design tool with normalized geometrical constraints was created in MATLAB, suitable for generating guide vane cascade geometries for Francis turbines. The goal is to determine the limits of these constraints, which will lead to future faster prediction of initial guide vane configurations in the turbine optimal operating region. Several geometries are developed using preliminary design data of the turbine and are investigated using CFD simulations close to the best efficiency point (BEP) of the turbine. This research is part of the Horizon-2020—HydroFlex project led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), focusing on the developm... [more]
Guidance on Implementing Renewable Energy Systems in Australian Homes
Peter Horan, Mark B. Luther, Hong Xian Li
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, CO2 emissions, costs, electric vehicle, solar PV
The purpose of this paper is to examine several real house cases as renewable energy resources are installed. It is an empirical study, based on first principles applied to measured data. In the first case presented, a PV solar system has been installed and a hybrid vehicle purchased. Battery storage is being considered. Smart Meter data (provided in Victoria, Australia) measures the electrical energy flowing to and from the grid in each half hour. Missing is the story about what the house is generating and what its energy requirements are through each half hour interval. We apply actual (on site) solar PV data to this study, resolving the unknown energy flows. Analysing energy flow has revealed that there are five fundamental quantities which determine performance, namely energy load, energy import, energy harvesting, energy export and energy storage. As a function of PV size these quantities depend on four parameters, easily derivable from the Smart Meter data, namely the house load,... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost correlation, economic analysis, power plant equipment
A comprehensive cost correlation analysis was conducted based on available cost correlations, and new equipment cost correlation models were proposed based on QUE$TOR modeling. Cost correlations for various types of equipment such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, air coolers, and pressure vessels were generated on the basis of extracted cost data. The models were derived on the basis of robust multivariable regression with the aim of minimizing the residuals by using the genetic algorithm. The proposed compressor models for both centrifugal and reciprocating types showed that the Turton cost estimation for carbon steel compressor and Matche’s and Mhhe’s data were compatible with the generated model. According to the results, the cost trend in the Turton correlation for carbon steel had a somewhat lower estimation than these correlations. Further, the cost trend of the Turton correlation for carbon steel pressure vessels was close to the presented model trend for both bullet and... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: remote sensing, short-term forecast, wind power ramps
It remains unclear to what extent remote sensing instruments can effectively improve the accuracy of short-term wind power forecasts. This work seeks to address this issue by developing and testing two novel forecasting methodologies, based on measurements from a state-of-the-art long-range scanning Doppler LiDAR. Both approaches aim to predict the total power generated at the wind farm scale with a five minute lead time and use successive low-elevation sector scans as input. The first approach is physically based and adapts the solar short-term forecasting approach referred to as “smart-persistence” to wind power forecasting. The second approaches the same short-term forecasting problem using convolutional neural networks. The two methods were tested over a 72 day assessment period at a large wind farm site in Victoria, Australia, and a novel adaptive scanning strategy was implemented to retrieve high-resolution LiDAR measurements. Forecast performances during ramp events and under va... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: charging station, controlled PEVs, daily load patterns, time of use (TOU), uncontrolled PEVs
This paper presents a methodology to calculate daily charging load curves in Seoul, South Korea, by taking into account plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) charging stations, allowing Seoul’s government to determine the PEVs charging effect on the load. In particular, the study calculates the charging power of uncontrolled PEVs charging in terms of the daily operating characteristics of a vehicle traveling between home and workplace, with respect to PEVs charging stations in the city, according to the PEVs’ market share. For the controlled PEVs charging strategy based on morning and afternoon work-to-home and vice versa traffic characteristics and time-of-use (TOU) prices in Seoul, the study calculates daily load patterns of uncontrolled and controlled charging scenarios. After adding the calculated values to the existing load, the study assesses and compares their effects on the power grid. The results are as follows. If by 2030 the share of electric vehicles is 10%, compared to the exis... [more]

The research revealed some major trends: there has been an explosive increase in studies based on Asian countries over the three periods as concerns for sustainable development intensified, and environmental issues were associated with research on the relationship between energy and economic growth. Even if the journals cover different scientific areas, during the last 10 years they contain articles with very simil... [more]
External Costs for Agriculture from Lignite Extraction from the Złoczew Deposit
Benedykt Pepliński
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: animal production, depression funnel, external cost, opencast lignite, plant production
In many circles, including in Poland, lignite is still viewed as a cheap source of energy, which is only possible if the external costs associated with mining and burning coal are not taken into account. In Poland, this is reflected in plans to open new Złoczew opencast lignite mines. In previous studies, the analysis of external costs has focused on the external costs of coal combustion and related pollutant emissions. This paper focuses on the extraction phase. The aim of the work here described was to estimate the external costs that agriculture may incur due to the formation of a depression funnel for the projected lignite mine in the Złoczew deposit. This paper discusses factors causing uncertainty in calculated estimates of external costs in agriculture, and characterizes the Bełchatów and Złoczew opencast mines. In the paper, a methodology for calculating external costs in livestock production is then proposed. In the next part of the study, the decrease in cereal and potato yie... [more]

Keywords: air voids in soil, grounding systems, high impulse conditions, soil ionisation, vertical rod electrodes
Ionisation can occur in the soil when high impulse currents are subjected to grounding systems. This occurrence is generated by a difference in the dielectric strength value between the soil and air voids. Several published works investigating the ionisation process in soil have seen that the degree of ionisation is dependent on several factors, among them soil resistivity, ground electrode size and impulse polarity. The effects on soil resistivity, such as the moisture content in soil, soil grain size, type of soil and its temperature, have been studied; however, the effect of the size of air voids in soil has not been extensively presented. This study considered four rod electrodes—a conventional rod electrode, conventional electrode with porous concrete (PC), conventional electrode with concrete mixed with a foaming agent (FC) and conventional electrode with concrete (NC)—to provide variations in the size of air voids. Resistance values, RDC, were measured for all these electrodes,... [more]

Keywords: cybersecurity attacks, cybersecurity for scada systems, false data injection, intruder detection, power system operation, power system protection, smart grid cybersecurity
Integration of information technologies with power systems has unlocked unprecedented opportunities in optimization and control fields. Increased data collection and monitoring enable control systems to have a better understanding of the pseudo-real-time condition of power systems. In this fashion, more accurate and effective decisions can be made. This is the key towards mitigating negative impacts of novel technologies such as renewables and electric vehicles and increasing their share in the overall generation portfolio. However, such extensive information exchange has created cybersecurity vulnerabilities in power systems that were not encountered before. It is imperative that these vulnerabilities are understood well, and proper mitigation techniques are implemented. This paper presents an extensive study of cybersecurity concerns in Smart grids in line with latest developments. Relevant standardization and mitigation efforts are discussed in detail and then the classification of... [more]
