Frequency Regulation of Electric Vehicle Aggregator Considering User Requirements with Limited Data Collection
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), EV aggregator, frequency regulation, limited data collection, regulation requirement, state recovery
High penetration of renewable energy in the power grid causes serious frequency deviations. Large-scale integrations of electric vehicles (EVs) in the power grid provide considerable vehicle-to-grid potential for frequency regulation. Existing frequency regulation strategies with aggregated EVs realize accurate power control that relies on complete information interaction between the EV aggregator and individual EVs. However, the data collection for all EV parameters is not applicable due to privacy protection and the limited communication environment. Considering the limited data collection from grid-connected EVs, this paper provides a novel frequency regulation strategy and tends to address the uncertain influence from EV users’ charging requirements, the EV aggregator’s power regulation, and the frequency regulation performance. Firstly, considering the influence of the limited data collection by EVs on the users’ requirement of traveling and regulation preference, a probabilistic... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: condition index, D-distance, power circuit breaker, renovation index, risk assessment, risk factor, weighting–scoring method
In this paper, a new D-distance factor is proposed to determine the failure probability and to prioritize maintenance actions of power circuit breakers in high-voltage substations. The D-distance factor is calculated by using the condition index and renovation index of a high-voltage circuit breaker (HVCB). To facilitate effective decision-making on maintenance with a simple method and less computational effort, the proposed model incorporates the weighting−scoring method (WSM) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with the various diagnostic methods for condition index assessments as well as the operation requirements of HVCBs for renovation index assessments. Many significant parameters from circuit breaker testing, such as insulation resistance, contact resistance, contact timing, SF6 gas measurements, gas leakage rate, visual inspection, etc., have been considered for condition index determination. In addition to these, other significant parameters, such as age of the circuit brea... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: control variables, load dispatch, multi-objective function, optimal power flow, peafowl optimization algorithm
The purpose of this paper is to address an urgent operational issue referring to optimal power flow (OPF), which is associated with a number of technical and financial aspects relating to issues of environmental concern. In the last few decades, OPF has become one of the most significant issues in nonlinear optimization research. OPF generally improves the performance of electric power distribution, transmission, and production within the constraints of the control system. It is the purpose of an OPF to determine the most optimal way to run a power system. For the power system, OPFs can be created with a variety of financial and technical objectives. Based on these findings, this paper proposes the peafowl optimization algorithm (POA). A powerful meta-heuristic optimization algorithm inspired by collective foraging activities among peafowl swarms. By balancing local exploitation with worldwide exploration, the OPF is able to strike a balance between exploration and exploitation. In ord... [more]

Effects of Quantity and Arrangement of a Flame-Retardant Cable on Burning Characteristics in Open and Compartment Environments
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: burning characteristics, compartment fire, fire growth rate, flame-retardant cable, maximum heat release rate
The results of cable burning experiments conducted in a well-controlled or open environment may differ from fire phenomena in an actual installation environment of cables where the effects of ventilation conditions and thermal feedback exist. In order to prevent the misunderstanding of fire phenomena due to these differences, the changes in burning characteristics in open and compartment environments were investigated for a flame-retardant (TFR-8) cable and general PVC (VCTF) cable arranged on three-layer trays. As a result, it was confirmed that the fire scale, fire spread area, and cable damage varied greatly depending on the cable arrangement under the same cable quantity condition. Furthermore, the maximum heat release rate (HRR) and fire growth rate of TFR-8 in the compartment environment increased more than 3-times compared to the open environment, and showed a similar level of fire risk to VCTF even though it is a flame-retardant cable. Additional experiments using vertical and... [more]

Internal Flow Field and Loss Analysis of a Magnetic Drive Pump’s Cooling Circuit
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling circuit, magnetic drive pump, numerical simulation, water friction loss
The cooling circuit is an important component of the magnetic drive pump because it prevents demagnetization of the permanent magnet and damage to the containment shell owing to a high temperature increase. In this paper, the flow field and losses of the cooling circuit of the magnetic pump are discussed and experimentally verified based on numerical simulation methods. Five different lengths of magnetic couplings were designed, and the flow field distribution, cooling flow rate, and loss variation laws of the cooling circuit were analyzed. The results show that the pump flow rate and magnetic coupling length have a minimal effect on the velocity distribution in the cooling circuit. When the magnet length increases from 30 mm to 55 mm, the temperature rise of the cooling circuit and the pressure drop at the gap increase by 23.1% and 25.3%, respectively. When the length of the magnetic coupling remains constant, the cooling flow rate of the cooling circuit falls with an increasing pump... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery, battery lifetime, electric vehicle (EV), Energy Efficiency, energy management, global optimisation, route based, supercapacitor
The usage of batteries and supercapacitors in the field of electric vehicles is becoming increasingly prominent in both research and development. Due to the complementary advantages of the two systems, high energy density, and high power density, a combined battery/supercapacitor system offers potential. To effectively utilise the potential of such a hybrid energy storage system (HESS), one requires an intelligent energy management system (EMS). The EMS is responsible for controlling the electrical power between the battery and the supercapacitor in such a way that the required power can be optimally distributed at all times (currently and in the future). For this purpose, the energy management system utilises information on the driving route and, based on this information, shall calculate a global strategy for the continuous power distribution. Lubricant Oil Consumption and Opportunities for Oil-Free Turbines in the Hydropower Sector: A European Assessment
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bearing, hydropower, lubricant, oil-free, turbine
Lubricant oil is used in hydropower units to minimize friction, improving the turbine efficiency and reducing the wear. However, oil production is a pollutant process, while eventual spills may affect water quality and damage freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the lubricant oil consumption of the European hydropower fleet was estimated (considering its installed capacity of 254 GW). The energy required to extract and process the oil was also estimated based on available literature data. The oil consumption was estimated to be 22 × 103 tons/year, and the associated CO2 emissions are 105 tons/year. The lubricant oil costs EUR 116 million per year. Although this is only 0.0022% of the oil consumed as a primary energy source in the European context, and less than 0.4% of the European industry consumption of lubricant oil, results show that new bearing types and oil-free turbines (e.g., self-lubricating or water-lubricated turbines) can improve the sustainability of the hydropower sector... Characterization and Dynamic Adjustment of the Flow Field during the Late Stage of Waterflooding in Strongly Heterogeneous Reservoirs
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: flow field, potential tapping, remaining oil, reservoir heterogeneity, waterflooding
The flow field is the fluid dynamic flow path in strongly heterogeneous reservoirs, and its evolution significantly affects the distribution of remaining oil, showing a disordered and highly dispersed mode caused by long-time water injection. By combining traditional flow-field evaluation with flow diagnostics, this paper proposes a methodology to quantitatively characterize and adjust the flow field in real time during the late stage of waterflooding in strongly heterogeneous reservoirs. In the study, the fluid velocity, abundance of predominant remaining oil, and Lorenz coefficient are preferred as the characteristic parameters to evaluate the effect of reservoir and flow heterogeneity on the flow field. Taking the minimization of the Lorentz coefficient as the objective function, the optimal injection and production parameters are obtained by dynamic adjusting the flow field. The results show that as water injection continues, the shape and variation of the flow field are jointly in... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AVR, fractional adaptive controller, fuzzy, PID, PIDA
Voltage regulation is a crucial task for electrical grids in the presence of high penetration levels of renewable energies. The regulation of generator excitation improves the stability of the power system. An essential tool for controlling the excitation of generators is the automatic voltage regulator (AVR). It is advised to use a controller to increase the reliability of an AVR. A survey about different types of controllers is proposed in this paper. Then, a novel optimized PID-Based model reference fractional adaptive controller is proposed, with detailed mathematical modeling. The novel controller was compared to the controllers in the survey. The novel proposed controller proved its superiority over the other controllers through its fast response and low rising and settling times. Moreover, the proposed controller smoothly and instantaneously tracked dynamic reference changes.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, electricity storage model, energy systems analysis, energy transition, gravitational energy storage, smart grid management
Low-carbon energy transitions taking place worldwide are primarily driven by the integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. These variable renewable energy (VRE) sources require energy storage options to match energy demand reliably at different time scales. This article suggests using a gravitational-based energy storage method by making use of decommissioned underground mines as storage reservoirs, using a vertical shaft and electric motor/generators for lifting and dumping large volumes of sand. The proposed technology, called Underground Gravity Energy Storage (UGES), can discharge electricity by lowering large volumes of sand into an underground mine through the mine shaft. When there is excess electrical energy in the grid, UGES can store electricity by elevating sand from the mine and depositing it in upper storage sites on top of the mine. Unlike battery energy storage, the energy storage medium of UGES is sand, which means the self-discharge rate of... [more]

Because of the randomness of wind speed and the nonlinearity of the dynamic equation of variable pitch control, it is difficult to establish an accurate dynamic equation of variable pitch of floating fan. In view of this situation, this paper takes the 5 MW floating wind turbine of the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) as the research object, establishes the dynamic equation under the basic control of FAST, uses the L-M (nonlinear least square method) to identify the dynamic parameters of the system and obtains the dynamic model of the floating fan under variable pitch stability control. Compared with the output of FAST in the same case, the accuracy of the control model is verified; the FAST base pitch control adopts PI control, but the effect of FAST base control is relatively poor.
