Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis for Energy Retrofit of Residential Buildings: Methodology and Feedback from Real Application
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building, decision support, energy retrofit, multi-criteria analysis
Decision-making in energy retrofit of existing buildings needs to consider the economic and technical criteria, as well as social and environmental ones. The main problems are to define and to aggregate these contradicting issues to support a measurable and verifiable decision process. The working hypothesis of this paper is that the ELECTRE Tri method would respond to the problem. The paper proposes and tests in a real professional environment the ELECTRE Tri method to help choose a retrofit program for collective residential buildings. The evaluation criteria used as performance indicators are defined in consultation with the decision maker and weighted by using the revised Simos’ cards method. The paper proposes to construct the renovation scenarios by combining individual actions that are mutually compatible. The methodology, the proposed criteria and the scenarios were successfully applied on a renovation project of a residential assembly composed of three buildings (67 apartments... [more]

Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Surface Wettability and Rotation on Condensation Heat Transfer in a Sludge Dryer Vertical Paddle
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dropwise condensation, rotation, sludge paddle dryer
In this paper, the applicability of advanced heat transfer enhancement technology to a paddle dryer was discussed. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to simulate condensation heat transfer on the inner surface of a dryer paddle. The effect of surface wettability and rotation on condensation heat transfer and droplet behavior was studied. The results showed that the present CFD model could properly simulate the condensation process on a vertical surface. With a decrease in the contact angle, the filmwise condensation turned into a dropwise condensation, which resulted in a significant increase in heat transfer coefficient and provided an approximately 5% increase in evaporation rate for the paddle dryer by changing the wettability of the inner surface of the paddle. Additionally, with a change in rotational angular velocity, heat transfer performance was almost unchanged under the filmwise condensation condition. However, rotational motion might cause a decrease in wal... [more]

Improved Speed Extension for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators by Means of Winding Reconfiguration
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: more electric aircrafts, power electronics, starter/generator, winding reconfiguration
With the increased development of electrical subsystems onboard modern transportation platforms, e.g., more electric aircrafts or more electric ships, the need for electric generation systems has increased. Since many motors require electric starting capability, the application of the starter/generator has been the focus of several studies. The peculiarity of such a system is its requirement for high torque at low speed (for the starting) as well as an extended operation range during the normal generation operations. This mismatch between maximum torque and speed comes at the expense of the power density of the electronic converter, which needs to be designed for the worst case situation and, due to the electric machine optimization, often requires field weakening operations. A new winding reconfiguration is proposed to achieve speed extension and provide more potentiality for high-speed applications. This work compares different power trains in terms of efficiency current stress for e... [more]

Definition of the Thermodynamic Cycle of a Biomass-Fueled Internal Combustion Engine
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, Biomass, combustion engine, thermodynamic cycle
Climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels make it urgent to find an alternative to oil-based fuels, especially in machines powered by internal combustion engines. Biomass is currently a poorly used source of energy and meets the necessary conditions to replace a large part of oil-based fuels. However, current engines cannot burn solid biomass and a specific engine needs to be developed. This work proposes the thermodynamic cycle of a biomass-fueled internal combustion engine. The cycle is significantly different from the Otto cycle, since compression and heat absorption occur simultaneously, in a single stage. Since it is not possible to find a function that relates pressure to volume at this stage, an approximate method is proposed to solve the cycle without resorting to numerical methods. The results show that the maximum pressure and temperature of a biomass-fueled engine cycle are somewhat higher than those of the equivalent Otto cycle. However, more significantly, the cycle... Single-Phase Grid-Forming Strategy with Power Decoupling Implementation for Electrolytic-Capacitor-Free EV Smart Battery Charger
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active power decoupling (APD), DC-link ripple, electric vehicles (EV), grid-forming (GFM), Smart Battery Charger (SBC), vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-home (V2H)
Smart Battery Chargers (SBCs) implementing grid-forming (GFM) control strategies are a promising solution to provide voltage and frequency support, increasing the grid reliability. Typically, GFM studies consider inverters with high DC-link capacitance. Therefore, there is a research gap in two-stage DC-AC converters with small DC-link capacitance implementing GFM strategies. This article proposes a novel approach to implement a GFM control strategy along with active power decoupling (APD) in an isolated, single-phase, electrolytic-capacitor-free two-stage DC-AC structure. The structure is composed of a voltage source inverter (VSI), DC-linked by film capacitors, with a dual-active-bridge series-resonant (DABSR) DC-DC converter. High DC-link ripple is allowed and managed by the APD. Hence, electrolytic capacitors are avoided, increasing the converter lifetime. In the proposed approach, the VSI implements the GFM strategy, operating in the four quadrants of the active and reactive power... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: combinatorial optimization methods, investment and operating costs, optimal conductor selection, three-phase power flow, unbalanced distribution networks
This study addresses the problem of selecting the conductor sizes for medium-voltage distribution networks with radial configurations. The optimization model that represents this problem is part of the mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) models, in which a power flow must be solved for each possible combination of conductor sizes. The main objective of this optimization problem is to find the best set of conductor sizes that minimize an economic objective function composed of the total costs of conducting materials added with the expected annual costs of the energy losses by proposing a new hybrid optimization methodology from the family of combinatorial optimization methods. To solve the MINLP model, a master−slave optimization method based on the modified version of the gradient-based metaheuristic optimizer (MGbMO) combined with the successive approximation power flow method for unbalanced distribution networks is presented. The MGbMO defines the set of conductor sizes assi... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), hydrodynamic performance, multi-parameter optimization, response surface method (RSM), rim-driven thrusters (RDT)
The efficiency of rim-driven thrusters (RDT) has always been the focus of attention in the context of energy conservation and environmental protection. A multi-parameter collaborative optimization framework is proposed to improve the efficiency of RDT based on the response surface method (RSM). The common structural parameters of RDT, including pitch ratio, disk ratio and rake angle, are selected as design variables to carry out the Box−Behnken experimental design combined with the simulation data obtained through CFD calculations. The response surface second-order model is employed to evaluate the extent to which different parameters can affect the target variable and obtain the optimal hydraulic efficiency. The results show that the established model has high precision, good reproducibility and strong anti-interference ability. The influence of the pitch ratio, rake angle and disk ratio on open water efficiency decreases in sequence. Compared with the prototype RDT, the maximum effic... [more]

Economic and Regulatory Uncertainty in Renewable Energy System Design: A Review
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electricity price, energy policy, Optimization, real options, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, uncertainty
Renewable energy is increasingly mobilizing more investment around the globe. However, there has been little attention to evaluating economic and regulatory (E&R) uncertainties, despite their enormous impact on the project cashflows. Consequently, this review analyzes, classifies, and discusses 130 articles dealing with the design of renewable energy projects under E&R uncertainties. After performing a survey and identifying the selected manuscripts, and the few previous reviews on the matter, the following innovative categorization is designed: sources of uncertainty, uncertainty characterization methods, problem formulations, solution methods, and regulatory frameworks. The classification reveals that electricity price is the most considered source of uncertainty, often alone, despite the existence of six other equally influential groups of E&R uncertainties. In addition, real options and optimization arise as the two main approaches researchers use to solve problems in energy system... [more]

An Optimal Method of Energy Management for Regional Energy System with a Shared Energy Storage
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Big-M method, energy management, load integration, micro energy systems (MESs), regional energy system (RES), shared energy storage system (SESS)
The regional energy system (RES) is a system that consumes multiple forms of energy in the region and achieves coordinated and efficient utilization of energy resources. The RES is composed of multiple micro energy systems (MESs); however, due to the mismatch of energy resources and different energy consumption within each MES, a large amount of clean energy is wasted, and each MES has to acquire extra energy. This significantly increases operation costs and contributes to environmental pollution. One of the promising ways to solve this problem is to deploy an energy storage system in the RES, which can make use of its advantages to transfer energy in space-time and fulfill the demand for loads in different periods, and conduct unified energy management for each MES in the RES. Nevertheless, a large number of users are deterred by the high investment in energy storage devices. A shared energy storage system (SESS) can allow multi-MESs to share one energy storage system, and meet the en... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multi-fractured horizontal well, multi-scale flow, pressure transient analysis, stress sensitivity, threshold pressure gradient, volcanic reservoir
Multi-fractured horizontal well (MFHW) technology is a key technology for developing unconventional reservoirs, which can generate a complex fracture network called a stimulated reservoir volume (SRV). Currently, there are many relative analytical models to describe the fluid seepage law, which are not suitable for volcanic reservoirs as of yet. The reasons are as follows: (1) due to the development of natural fractures, multi-scaled flow (matrix, natural fractures, SRV) should be considered to characterize MFHW flow in volcanic reservoirs; (2) non-Darcy flow and stress sensitivity should be considered simultaneously for seepage in volcanic reservoirs. Thus, this paper presents a novel MFHW analysis model of volcanic reservoirs that uses a multi-scale dual-porosity medium model and complex flow mechanisms. Laplace transformation, the Duhamel principle, the perturbation method and Stehfest numerical inversion are employed to solve the model to obtain dynamic pressure response curves. Th... [more]

A Novel Semianalytical Model for the Relationship between Formation Pressure and Water Saturation in Coalbed Methane Reservoirs
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: coalbed methane reservoirs, formation pressure and water saturation, material balance, pore compressibility, recovery
The accuracy of the relationship between formation pressure and water saturation has a direct impact on predicting the production performance of coal reservoirs. As a result, researchers are becoming more interested in this connection. The most commonly used method to evaluate this connection is the semianalytic method, but it disregards the impact of coal matrix shrinkage on pore compressibility, resulting in inaccurate water saturation estimations for coal reservoirs. A material balance equation that considers the effect of coal matrix shrinkage on cleat porosity and pore compressibility, as well as the gas−water relative permeability curve, is used for the first time in this study to establish a model between pressure and water saturation. Furthermore, this study extends the proposed pressure−saturation model to predict cumulative gas production and gas recovery, resolving the difficult problem of calculating recovery for coalbed methane reservoirs.
