Subject: Optimization
Keywords: hybridization, MENA region, Optimization, solar power plants
Hybrid concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) plants are gaining relevance because they combine their advantages: easy installation and low cost of PV plus dispatchability of CSP. This paper presents results of a techno-economic modelling of this hybrid approach for sites in Jordan, Tunisia and Algeria. Local boundary conditions such as meteorology, cost and electricity demand have been considered to determine the best configurations for these three sites. Different CSP technologies with thermal energy storage have been selected. Hybridization with natural gas has also been included. The optimization is done towards minimizing the LCOE while covering the electrical demand 24/7. Results are presented for different CO2 emissions ranges, as the use of fossil fuel has a strong impact on the LCOE and for environmental reasons, it may be preferred to be kept to a minimum. For most of the cases analyzed, the fraction of energy from PV that leads to minimum LCOE is lower... [more]
A Generic Framework for Multiscale Simulation of High and Low Enthalpy Fractured Geothermal Reservoirs under Varying Thermodynamic Conditions
Yuhang Wang, Mousa HosseiniMehr, Arjan Marelis, Hadi Hajibeygi
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geothermal energy, mass and heat transfer, multiscale simulation
We develop a multiscale simulation strategy, namely, algebraic dynamic multilevel (ADM) method, for simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer in fractured geothermal reservoirs under varying thermodynamic conditions. Fractures with varying conductivities are modeled using the projection-based embedded discrete fracture model (pEDFM) in an explicit manner. The developed ADM method allows the fine-scale system to be mapped to a discrete domain with an adaptive grid resolution via the use of the restriction and prolongation operators. The developed framework is used (a) to investigate the impacts of formulations with different primary variables on the simulation results, and (b) to assess the performance of ADM in a high-enthalpy reservoir by comparing the simulation results against those obtained from fine-scale grids. Results show that the two formulations produce similar results in the case of single-phase flow, which indicates that the molar formulation is a favorable option that can... [more]

In this article, a novel methodology is proposed by utilizing a technique which, in light of the change in the African vulture optimization known as Sine Cosine, adopted an African vulture optimization algorithm (SCaAVOA)-based tilt integral derivative (TID) regulator for the load frequency control (LFC) of a five-area power system with multi-type generations. At first, the execution of the Sine Cosine-adopted calculation is tried by contrasting it with the standard AVOA calculation while considering different standard benchmark functions. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed SCaAVOA algorithm, the results are contrasted using different standard approaches. In the next stage, the proposed method is used in a five-area thermal power system and is likewise applied to a five-area, ten-unit system comprising different conventional sources as well as some renewable energy sources. The performance analysis of the planned regulator is completed for various system boundaries and load... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dealing with overflow accidents, gas logging interpretation, identification of overflow fluid type, overflow fluid density calculation, two-phase flow model
Accurate identification of overflow fluid types facilitates timely and effective handling of onsite overflow accidents. Research into identifying the type of overflow fluid is limited, and there are only simple calculation models that do not consider enough effects; additionally, accuracy needs to be improved and the identification method is not perfect. If there is no drilling data, it is impossible to identify the overflow fluid. Therefore, this paper modifies the density calculation model of overflow fluid by considering the influence of the temperature, pressure field, and two-phase flow model, making the calculation result more accurate and universal, and puts forward a comprehensive method for auxiliary identification based on gas logging interpretation. This paper uses the gas state equation to verify the accuracy of the overflow density model; after verification using data from more than 20 overflowing wells, the method was found to be practical and had an accuracy rate of more... Subject: Materials
Keywords: Catalysis, HER, nanoclusters, ORR, palladium, photocatalysis, single-atom, subnanoclusters
Palladium is among the most versatile noble-metal atoms that, when dispersed on solid supports, can be stabilized in 0, +1, +2, +3 redox states. Moreover, despite its noble-metal character, Pd shows a considerable degree of chemical reactivity. In Pd Nanoparticles (NPs), atomic {Pdn+-X} states, where n = 0, 1, 2, 3, and X = atom or hydride, can play key roles in catalytic processes. Pd-oxygen moieties can be stabilized at nanointerfaces of Pd in contact with metal-oxides. These {Pdn+-X}s can be either isolated Pd atoms dispersed on the support, or, more interestingly, atomic states of Pd occurring on the Pd NPs. The present review focuses on the role of such {Pdn+-X} states in catalytic processes related to energy storage or energy conversion, with specific focus on photocatalysis, H2 production reaction (HRR), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and water-splitting. Synthesis of atomic {Pdn+-X} states and their detection methodology is among the current challenges. Herein, the chemistry... [more]

In this study, a boil-off gas reliquefaction system that is a part of liquid ethylene gas (LEG) carriers is evaluated. The reliquefaction system is formed by two thermally interconnected two-stage refrigeration cycles. The working fluid of the bottoming cycle is ethylene; the working fluid of the topping cycle is propylene. The research is based on determining the irreversibilities in the reliquefaction system cycles using the entropy-cycle method of thermodynamic analysis. The impact of the process performance in the main components on the reliquefaction system energy efficiency has been evaluated by the entropy-cycle method. The greatest thermodynamic irreversibility is observed in the two-stage compression process of the bottoming cycle (9%), total throttling irreversibility in the reliquefaction system (8.5%), and vapor superheating at the suction into the low stage of the two-stage compressor of the bottoming cycle (8%). The results of the study showed that it is necessary to impr... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Fresnel lens collector, solar power concentration
The energy efficiency of a small-scale solar concentrating thermal device is investigated, based on Monte-Carlo Ray-Tracing (MCRT) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling. The device consists of a Fresnel lens collector—engraved on a 1 m rectangular plate—and a 10 cm sized plate receiver, with drilled cylindrical channels with a diameter of 10 mm. Inlet velocities and heat transfer fluid (HTF) temperatures lie within the range of 0.25−1 m/s and 100−200 °C, respectively. The configurations examined involve the utilization of a selective coating on the absorbing surface of the receiver, increasing the channel diameter to 15 mm and the receiver size to 20 cm, and insertion of a glass envelope in front of the absorbing surface. Energy efficiency increases with increasing fluid velocity up to 80%, a level beyond which no further improvement is observed. The coating contributes to a reduction in heat losses; it brings substantial benefits for the lower velocities examined. The increa... [more]

Keywords: adaptive parameter strategy, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), energy storage system (ESS), large power angle, primary frequency regulation (PFR), virtual synchronous generator (VSG)
The frequency regulation rate and operation stability of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based on a virtual synchronous generator (VSG) strategy decreases under large-power-angle conditions, which reduces the grid frequency support capacity. This paper proposes the compound adaptive parameter (CAP) and coordinated primary frequency regulation (CPFR) strategies to improve the grid frequency support capacity in terms of multiple dimensions of the transient properties, operation condition range, and regulation duration. Mathematical and small signal models of the DFIG-VSG system are constructed. The effect of large-power-angle conditions on the transient properties under grid frequency perturbations is analyzed based on these models, and the CAP strategy for excitation control and virtual damping is formulated. The constraints of the rotor kinetic energy and the load increase capacity of the grid-side converter are analyzed, and the CPFR strategy is formulated based on this. Final... [more]

Keywords: chiller plant, limited data, model calibration, Modelica
Model-based optimization is an important means by which to analyze the energy-saving potential of chiller plants. To obtain reliable energy-saving results, model calibration is essential, which strongly depends on operating data. However, sufficient data cannot always be satisfied in reality. To improve the prediction accuracy of the model with limited data, a model calibration method based on error reverse correction was investigated. A traditional optimization-based calibration method was first used for preliminary model calibration to obtain simulation data and simulation errors. Then, the sources of the simulation errors were analyzed to determine the distribution characteristics of the corresponding operating conditions of the model. Finally, the performance of the model was reversely corrected by adding a correction term to the original model. The proposed calibration method was tested on a chiller plant in Xiamen, China. The results showed that the proposed calibration method im... [more]

Keywords: grid-following inverters, grid-forming inverters, microgrid testbed, power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL), smart grid testbed, smart inverters
Over the past decade, the world’s electrical grid infrastructure has experienced rapid growth in the integration of grid-edge inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs). This has led to operating concerns associated with reduced system inertia, stability and intermittent renewable power generation. However, advanced or “smart” inverters can provide grid services such as volt-VAR, frequency-Watt, and constant power factor capabilities to help sustain reliable grid and microgrid operations. To address the challenges and accelerate the benefits of smart inverter integration, new approaches are needed to test both the impacts of inverter-based resources (IBRs) on the grid as well as the impacts of changing grid conditions on the operation of IBRs. Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) stands out as a strong testing solution, enabling a real-time simulated power system to be interfaced to hardware devices such as inverters which can be implemented to determine interactions between multi... Keywords: constructal design, entropy generation, fin, heat transfer, mixed convection, nanofluid
Entropy generation and heat transfer in cavities have received significant interest due to the ever-increasing demand for enhancing thermal performances in many scientific and engineering fields. In particular, nanofluids are being used increasingly in engineering applications and real-life problems, as they exhibit significantly better thermal properties than basic heat transfer fluids, for example, water, oil, or ethylene glycol. This study investigates the entropy generation and heat transfer of a nanofluid in a confined cavity with a moving top wall and a rectangular fin at the bottom. Here, a macro-homogeneous model based on a previously developed model is employed for investigating the mixed convective flow and heat transfer of CuO-water nanofluid. Various fin geometries, Rayleigh numbers, Reynolds numbers, and nanofluid concentrations have been employed. Present results indicate that the heat transfer rate can be improved, while entropy generation can be minimized using nanoflui... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air temperature, electrical energy consumption, HI, relative humidity, Sfax, UHI, UTCI and THW comfort indices
This study follows on from the work on the urban climate of Sfax and its energy repercussions. The spatial configuration of the urban heat island (UHI) and the spatial distribution of the thermal comfort indices, the heat index (HI), the universal thermal climate index (UTCI) and the temperature humidity wind index (THW), resulting from the car survey method, essentially show the impact of land use and the distance from the coastline on the spatial distribution of air temperatures. A maximum difference of 7 °C between the city centre and the countryside is measured in very hot summer weather. During the night phase, the apparent temperatures are oppressive, particularly in the city centre, where HI and THW comfort indices exceeding 40 °C were calculated. Compared to the HI and UTCI, the THW demonstrates a much stronger variation due to the influence of wind between open areas and the downtown area. The intensity of thermal discomfort decreases as one moves towards the rural area (−15 °... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), numerical solvers, transient three-dimensional simulations, URANS, vertical axis wind turbine, wind deflector
Many recent studies show that the performance of Savonius turbines can be considerably increased by using wind deflectors. Axisymmetric deflectors are particularly interesting; they concentrate the wind flow in all directions. This study aims to aerodynamically optimize the truncated cone deflector shape through transient 3D CFD simulations using sliding mesh techniques. To reduce the mesh size and thus the simulation time, symmetrical boundary conditions were applied to rotating body faces. A mesh grid sensitivity study was conducted to define the optimum mesh size. Additionally, hybrid numerical approaches combining coupled and SIMPLE solvers were particularly influential in reducing computational time. Concave- and convex-arced-shaped faces deflectors were compared to the original truncated cone deflector, showing an increase in the performance for the convex type and a decrease for the concave one. Then, eight cases involving convex spline shape deflectors were simulated. All these... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen safety, protective wall, skid-mounted hydrogen refueling stations, vented explosion
Hydrogen refueling stations are one of the key infrastructure components for the hydrogen-fueled economy. Skid-mounted hydrogen refueling stations (SHRSs) can be more easily commercialized due to their smaller footprints and lower costs compared to stationary hydrogen refueling stations. The present work modeled hydrogen explosions in a skid-mounted hydrogen refueling station to predict the overpressures for hydrogen-air mixtures and investigate the protective effects for different explosion vent layouts and protective wall distances. The results show that the explosive vents with the same vent area have similar overpressure reduction effects. The layout of the explosion vent affects the flame shape. Explosion venting can effectively reduce the inside maximum overpressure by 61.8%. The protective walls can reduce the overpressures, but the protective walls should not be too close to the SHRS because high overpressures are generated inside the walls due to the confined shock waves. Keywords: ammonia–diesel dual-fuel engines, nitrogen oxides emissions, selective catalytic reduction (SCR), without the urea
Ammonia, as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines, can achieve nearly zero carbon emissions. Although the development of the pure ammonia engine is limited by its poor combustion characteristics, ammonia−hydrocarbon mixed combustion can effectively improve the combustion of ammonia fuel. With the increase in the ammonia fuel proportion in the fuel mixture, a large number of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and unburned ammonia may be discharged, which have a poor impact on the environment. In this study, the performance of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment technology in reducing NOX and ammonia emissions from ammonia−diesel dual-fuel engines was investigated using simulation. A good cross-dimensional model was established under the coupling effect, though the effect of a single-dimensional model could not be presented. The results show that when the exhaust gas in the engine cylinder is directly introduced into the SCR without additional reducing agents such as urea... [more]

Keywords: control system coordination, diesel engine, machine learning engine management, neural network models
The tightening of diesel pollutant emission regulations has made Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) management through steady-state maps obsolete. To overcome the map’s scarce performance and efficiently manage the engine, control systems must cope with ICE transient operations, the coupling between its subsystem dynamics, and the tradeoff between different requirements. The work demonstrates the effectiveness of a reference generator that coordinates the air path and combustion control systems of a turbocharged heavy-duty diesel engine. The control system coordinator is based on neural networks and allows for following different engine-out Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) targets while satisfying the load request. The air path control system provides the global conditions for the correct functioning of the engine, targeting O2 concentration and pressure in the intake manifold. Through cooperation, the combustion control targets Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) and NOx to react to rapid changes... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: criterion method, offshore wind turbine, section design, tower design, two-level optimization
Tower cost makes up an important part in the whole wind turbine construction especially for offshore wind farms. The main method to reduce tower cost is to reduce tower weight by optimum design. This paper proposes a two-level optimization criterion method for the optimal design of steel conical tower considering different structural reliability and uncertainty, along with the discreteness of design variables such as tower thickness and bolt type. In the first level, the tower shell geometry can be obtained by section design method; in the second level, bolted connections and flanges are designed based on the results of the first level. Then, summarized analysis and iterative calculation is performed to obtain optimum tower design with constant strength and rigidness. This method will play an important role in offshore customized turbine design.
Electricity Market Reforms for Energy Transition: Lessons from China

Keywords: China, electricity market, feed-in tariff, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, renewable portfolio standard, solar PV, Wind
In response to the rising importance of the climate agenda, many countries have restructured their electricity markets to facilitate the utilization of renewable energy. China is an interesting case because it has expanded its utilization of wind and solar energy with unmatched speed. This review starts with an analysis of the 2002 reforms that uncoupled electricity production from transmission. The investigation covers the period leading up to the 2022 proposal, which aimed to build a nationally integrated electricity market. The analysis suggests that a careful alignment of incentives for key market players to produce and consume renewable energy is vital during the process of energy transition. The introduction of feed-in tariffs in 2009 for wind energy, which were subsequently extended to solar energy, stimulated a high growth in installed capacity. However, a high electricity curtailment rate resulted. Since 2018, the Chinese government has resorted to curtailment caps and renewab... [more]

Keywords: dust accumulation, Energy Efficiency, forecasting, optimal scheduling, photovoltaic power systems, PV cleaning, soiling, solar power generation
Soiling of PV modules is an issue causing non-negligible losses on PV power plants, between 3 and 4% of the total energy production. Cleaning is the most common way to mitigate soiling. The impact of the cleaning activity can be significant, both in terms of cost and resources consumption. For these reasons, it is important to monitor and predict soiling profiles and establish an optimal cleaning schedule. Especially in locations where raining is irregular or where desert winds carry a high concentration of particles, it is also important to know how precipitation and dust events affect the soiling ratio. This paper presents a new model based on environmental conditions that helps the decision-making process of the cleaning schedule. The model was validated by the analysis of five large grid-connected PV plants in Spain over two years of operation, with a total power of 200 MW. The comparison between the model and soiling sensors at the five locations was included. Excellent results we... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, cryogenic fluids, equations of state, real fluids, supercritical
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) frameworks of supercritical cryogenic fluids need to employ Real Fluid models such as cubic Equations of State (EoS) to account for thermal and inertial driven mechanisms of fluid evolution and disintegration. Accurate estimation of the non-linear variation in density, thermodynamic and transport properties is required to computationally replicate the relevant thermo and fluid dynamics involved. This article reviews the availability, performance and the implementation of common Real Fluid EoS and data-based models in CFD studies of supercritical cryogenic fluids. A systematic analysis of supercritical cryogenic fluid (N2, O2 and CH4) thermophysical property predictions by cubic (PR and SRK) and non-cubic (SBWR) Real Fluid EoS, along with Chung’s model, reveal that: (a) SRK EoS is much more accurate than PR at low temperatures of liquid phase, whereas PR is more accurate at the pseudoboiling region and (b) SBWR EoS is more accurate than PR and SRK desp... Keywords: fault tree, initiating event, loss of off-site power, multi-unit risk, nuclear safety, PSA
In a nuclear power plant, the consequences of a multi-unit event occurring concurrently are more serious than those of a single-unit event. The first step in the probabilistic safety analysis of multi-units is to analyze the initiating events and calculate the frequency of initiating events for simultaneous events of multiple units. The difficulty in using the fault tree model is that the known data are all frequency data from a single unit and cannot be logically multiplied. In this paper, taking a dual unit as an example, we used the formula to convert the probability of failure of the second unit within 72 h and then build a fault tree model. After analyzing the results of the dual unit, the most frequent cut set was the common cause of failure of the main transformer and of the switching failure of the main and auxiliary external power. The final calculation of the frequency of simultaneous loss of off-site power events for the dual units within 72 h was 3.22 × 10−4/year. After com... [more]
