Barriers to the Expansion of Sugarcane Bioelectricity in Brazilian Energy Transition
Munir Younes Soares, Dorel Soares Ramos, Margareth de Oliveira Pavan, Fabio A. Diuana
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: barriers, bioelectricity, competitiveness, complementarity, energy auction
This article evaluated bioelectricity’s evolving competitiveness and systemic complementarity benefits, both in comparison with other renewable sources. To do so, the results of several energy auctions were analysed, and a modelling exercise was developed using an optimisation model based on stochastic dual dynamic programming. The results indicate that wind and solar energies became the least cost expansions, and sugarcane bioelectricity lost significance and competitiveness in this environment. At the same time, the study shows that wind power’s potential to be complementary to hydropower generation is greater than bioenergy in Brazil. These findings have relevant policy implications regarding the power sector and whether bioelectricity from sugarcane should still be incentivised along with wind power sources. It is worthwhile to point out that although the Brazilian case is explored in the article, it can be used as an example by other countries, especially developing ones, that can... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Storage, net-billing, net-metering, NPV, photovoltaics, self-consumption
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have been gaining popularity on a continuous basis and the current global political situation is only accelerating energy transformation in many countries. Objectives related to environmental protection and use of RES set by different countries all over the world as well as the European Union (EU) are becoming priorities. In Poland, after years of a boom in photovoltaic (PV) installations, the Renewable Energy Sources Act has been amended, resulting in a change to the billing system for electricity produced by individual prosumers. The change in the billing method, also in pursuance to the provisions of EU laws, has contributed to the inhibition of the PV installation market for fear of energy prices and investment payback time. In this paper, by using the Net Present Value (NPV) method, three mechanisms of billing of electricity from prosumer micro-installations—based on the net-metering principle and net-billing principle (using monthly and hourly price... March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, diagnosis, electrical machine, faults detection, industrial motors
Kinematic chains are ensembles of elements that integrate, among other components, with the induction motors, the mechanical couplings, and the loads to provide support to the industrial processes that require motion interchange. In this same line, the induction motor justifies its importance because this machine is the core that provides the power and generates the motion of the industrial process. However, also, it is possible to diagnose other types of faults that occur in other elements in the kinematic chain, which are reflected as problems in the motor operation. With this purpose, the coupling between the motor and the final load in the chain requires, in many situations, the use of a gearbox that balances the torque−velocity relationship. Thus, the gear wear in this component is addressed in many works, but the study of gradual wear has not been completely covered yet at different operating frequencies. Therefore, in this work, a methodology is proposed based on statistical fea... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: critical liquid-carrying gas velocity, equation of state, gas–liquid flow, phase state prediction, pressure drop
The phase state prediction methods of condensate gas are relatively mature, but the effect of phase changes on gas−liquid mixture flow behavior and the liquid-carrying capacity of gas has not been researched in detail. This study applied PIPESIM software to predict the fluid phase properties under different development stages of a condensate gas reservoir in Shengli Oilfield and determined the phase diagram and physical properties of the well stream on the basis of the optimized equation of state (EOS). Then the influence of phase change characteristics on wellbore flow behavior and critical liquid-carrying gas velocity was analyzed. The study showed that compared with the early development stage, fewer heavy components are produced and the produced gas−liquid ratio is increased in the late stage of the condensate gas reservoir. In addition, the pressure loss of fluid is decreased, the critical liquid-carrying gas velocity and flow rate are reduced, and the liquid-lifting difficulty is... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anion exchange membrane, durability, feeding solution, green hydrogen, transition metal catalysts, water electrolysis
Green hydrogen production, i.e., produced on a CO2-neutral basis through the electrolysis of water employing renewable electricity, has attracted increasing attention. The electricity required is generated from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), for example, wind energy, hydropower, or solar energy. Since neither the process of production nor the end products of H2 and O2 are harmful to the environment, green hydrogen is climate neutral. Developing electrolysis technology is, therefore, a research topic to follow. Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Water Electrolysis (WE) is an innovative technology that couples the advantages of the more mature technologies of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) and conventional alkaline electrolysis, with the potential to eliminate the drawbacks of both. AEMWE technology is in an evolutionary stage and involves more investigation on several research topics, such as membrane and catalyst development and stability, as well as alternative feeding solutions that do n... Numerical Simulation on Electromagnetic Energy Harvester Oscillated by Speed Ripple of AC Motors
Masayuki Kato
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC motors, Coriolis force, electromagnetic energy harvester, speed ripple, torque ripple
The suppression of torque ripples in an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is essential to improve its efficiency and responsiveness. Here, we report on the development of an electromagnetic energy harvester incorporated into an IPMSM to suppress its torque ripples. The proposed harvester is driven to oscillations by the speed ripple of the AC motor. We derived the motion and circuit equations for the motor and the harvester according to Euler−Lagrange equations. We discussed the principle of electrical power generation and used MATLAB/Simulink numerical simulations to investigate the dynamic behavior of the proposed harvester. Our findings revealed that the active Coriolis force unnecessarily reduces the motor’s original torque, leading to unsuccessful power generation. Nevertheless, our results demonstrated that the reactive Coriolis force successfully suppresses the motor torque ripple.

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, load identification, non-intrusive load monitoring, voltage–current trajectory
Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) can obtain fine-grained electricity consumption information of each appliance by analyzing the voltage and current data measured at a single point on the bus, which is of great significance for promoting and improving the efficiency and sustainability of the power grid and enhancing the energy efficiency of users. NILM mainly includes data collection and preprocessing, event detection, feature extraction, and appliance identification. One of the most critical steps in NILM is signature extraction, which is the basis for all algorithms to achieve good state detection and energy disaggregation. With the generalization of machine learning algorithms, different algorithms have also been used to extract unique signatures of appliances. Recently, the development and deployment of the voltage−current (V-I) trajectory signatures applied for appliance identification motivated us to present a comprehensive review in this domain. The V-I trajectory signatures... [more]

Haiwang Li, Dawei Zhang, Ruquan You, Yifan Zou, Song Liu
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blowing ratio, conjugated heat transfer, impingement/effusion cooling, inclination angle, stress
Due to the uneven temperature field and temperature gradient introduced by an efficient cooling structure, the analysis of the stress field is necessary. In this study, the cooling characteristics and stress characteristics such as the thermal stress and thermomechanical stress of an impingement/effusion cooling system were investigated by employing a fluid−thermal-structure coupling simulation method. The effects of film hole injection angle (30°−90°) and blowing ratio (0.5−2.0) were studied. The results showed that the film hole shape and the non-uniform temperature field introduced by the cooling structure had a great influence on the stress field distribution. With the increase in the blowing ratio, not only the overall cooling effectiveness of the cooling system increased, but the maximum thermal stress and thermomechanical stress near film holes also increased. The cases with a smaller inclination angle could provide a better cooling performance, but caused a more serious stress... [more]

Perspective on Predictive Modeling: Current Status, New High-Order Methodology and Outlook for Energy Systems
Dan Gabriel Cacuci
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data adjustment, data assimilation, high-order correlations, high-order sensitivities, least squares, maximum entropy principle, model calibration, model validation, predictive modeling, response sensitivities to model parameters
This work presents a perspective on deterministic predictive modeling methodologies, which aim at extracting best-estimate values for model responses and parameters along with reduced predicted uncertainties for these best-estimate values. The two oldest such methodologies are the data-adjustment method, which stems from the nuclear energy field, and the data-assimilation method, which is implemented in the geophysical sciences. Both of these methodologies attempt to minimize, in the least-square sense, a user-defined functional that represents the discrepancies between computed and measured model responses. These two methodologies were briefly reviewed and shown to be inconsistent even to first-order in the sensitivities of the response to the model parameters. In contrast to these methodologies, it was shown that the “maximum entropy”-based predictive modeling methodology (called BERRU-PM) that was developed by the author not only dispenses with the subjective “user-chosen functional... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, end-winding region, fan blades, fanning factor, heat transfer, heat transfer coefficient, induction machine, permanent magnet machine, stator end winding, thermal analysis
The main heat transfer mechanism in the end-winding region of electrical machines is convection. In order to increase the air motion, the rotor is equipped with a series of blades. Their geometry is reflected in the fanning factor, i.e., the ratio between the rotor peripheral speed and air velocity. An accurate calculation procedure for the fanning factor has not yet been given. Knowing its value is crucial for the determination of air velocity and heat transfer coefficient (HTC), as the latter describes the end-winding heat removal capability. In this study, the convective heat transfer phenomena between the end winding and air inside the end-winding region were analyzed, with the heat generated only in the end winding, mimicked with a custom designed coil, and air moved by the blades. The analysis was performed by experimental testing and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. Measurements data were used to build a reliable CFD model. Further on, CFD results were used to derive... [more]

Keywords: Bitcoin, carbon futures, contagion spillover, investor attention, volatility
The uniqueness of this investigation lies in empirically testing and proving the contagion spillover of Bitcoin attention to carbon futures. Specifically, several models are adopted to investigate the explanatory and predictive abilities of Bitcoin attention to carbon futures. The results can be generalized as follows. First, Bitcoin attention Granger causes the variation of carbon futures. Second, Bitcoin attention shows a negative impact on carbon futures and an addition, an invert U-shaped connection exists. Third, the Bitcoin attention-based models can beat the commonly used historical average benchmark during out-of-sample forecasting both in statistical and economic levels. Fourth, we complete robustness checks to certify that the contagion spillover from Bitcoin attention to the pricing of carbon futures does exist. Finally, we prove the linear and non-linear impacts from Bitcoin attention to realized volatility of carbon futures. All the results prove that Bitcoin attention is... [more]
