Keywords: carbon footprint, green hydrogen, integrated energy system, levelized cost of energy, solar PV system
In this study, a green hydrogen system was studied to provide electricity for an office building in the Sharjah emirate in the United Arab Emirates. Using a solar PV, a fuel cell, a diesel generator, and battery energy storage; a hybrid green hydrogen energy system was compared to a standard hybrid system (Solar PV, a diesel generator, and battery energy storage). The results show that both systems adequately provided the power needed for the load of the office building. The cost of the energy for both the basic and green hydrogen energy systems was 0.305 USD/kWh and 0.313 USD/kWh, respectively. The cost of the energy for both systems is very similar, even though the capital cost of the green hydrogen energy system was the highest value; however, the replacement and operational costs of the basic system were higher in comparison to the green hydrogen energy system. Moreover, the impact of the basic system in terms of the carbon footprint was more significant when compared with the gree... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacity degradation, extreme learning machine, life prediction, sparrow search algorithm, thermal gradient
Thermal gradient is inevitable in a lithium-ion battery pack because of uneven heat generation and dissipation, which will affect battery aging. In this paper, an experimental platform for a battery cycle aging test is built that can simulate practical thermal gradient conditions. Experimental results indicate a high nonlinear degree of battery degradation. Considering the nonlinearity of Li-ion batteries aging, the extreme learning machine (ELM), which has good learning and fitting ability for highly nonlinear, highly nonstationary, and time-varying data, is adopted for prediction. A battery life prediction model based on the sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is proposed in this paper to optimize the random weights and bias of the ELM network and verified by experimental data. The results show that compared with traditional ELM and back-propagation neural networks, the prediction results of ELM optimized by SSA have lower mean absolute error percentages and root mean square errors, indic... Two-Phase Modeling and Simulations of a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Water Electrolyzer Considering Key Morphological and Geometrical Features in Porous Transport Layers
Hassan Salihi, Hyunchul Ju
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrochemical performance, morphological analysis, multi-phase modeling, numerical modeling, PEM water electrolysis
Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis has a promising future for large-scale hydrogen production. As PEM electrolysis technology develops, larger operating current densities are required. In order to increase current density, more water should be available at the reaction sites. Moreover, the removal rate of oxygen and hydrogen needs to be effectively improved. This, in turn, necessitates a better understanding of the main mass transport and electrochemical processes. On the anode side, mass transport is particularly crucial because water must be supplied to the catalyst layer (CL) while, at the same time, oxygen bubbles must be eliminated in a parallel flow from the reaction sites into the flow channels. Hence, simulating the two-phase bubbly flow across the cell thickness is necessary to predict PEM electrolysis performance more accurately as a function of the operating current density. This study provides a systematic understanding of how morphological and geometrical feat... [more]
A New Technique for Estimating Stress from Fracture Injection Tests Using Continuous Wavelet Transform
Mohamed Adel Gabry, Ibrahim Eltaleb, Mohamed Y. Soliman, Syed M. Farouq-Ali
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: continuous wavelet transform, diagnostic fracture injection test, geothermal reservoirs, hydraulic fracture, minimum horizontal stress
The diagnostic fracture injection test (DFIT) is widely used to obtain the fracture closure pressure, reservoir permeability, and reservoir pressure. Conventional methods for analyzing DFIT are based on the assumption that a vertical well is drilled in ultra-low permeability reservoirs with potential multiple closures but fails to consider horizontal wells. There is still significant debate about the rigorousness and validity of these techniques due to the complexity of the hydraulic fracture opening and closure process and assumptions of conventional fracture detection methods. The paper introduces a new method for detecting fracture closure pressure using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The new method aims to decompose the pressure fall-off signal into multiple levels with different frequencies using the CWT. This “short wavy” function is stretched or compressed and placed at many positions along the signal to be analyzed. The wavelet then convoluted the signal yielding a wav... [more]
Dynamic Performance of Organic Rankine Cycle Driven by Fluctuant Industrial Waste Heat for Building Power Supply
Tailu Li, Zeyu Wang, Jingyi Wang, Xiang Gao
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic performance, fluctuant industrial waste heat, Organic Rankine cycle, superheat degree
Organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely used to recover low-grade waste heat. The effects of heat-source temperature amplitude and period on ORC systems are discussed based on operating parameters and power-generation performance. The maximum allowable heat-source temperature amplitude under different superheat and average heat-source temperature was discussed. The results showed that the amplitudes of power-generation and operating parameters were proportional to the amplitude. The operating parameters of the system had a certain response time and were proportional to the period. The performance of ORC deteriorated at any amplitude or period. The superheat degree was not conducive to the power-generation performance, but could effectively avoid the working fluid is wet vapor into the expander. This conclusion can be applied to any ORC system driven by a single organic working fluid, which provides theoretical support for the design of control systems and power-generation device.

Subject: Other
Keywords: energy crisis, literature review, organizational resilience
In this paper, we provide a literature review on the topic of organizational resilience, in relation to the energy crisis. The concept of organizational resilience refers to the capability to respond and adapt to shocks. Undoubtedly, the recent energy crisis may be considered an external shock, as it has raised energy prices and exerts a significant pressure on decision makers. Although the energy crisis has impacted organizations significantly in recent months, there is little knowledge on how companies should respond to this threat. Thus, to fill in this research gap, we apply the method of a systematic literature review (SLR), combined with text mining tools, to map the topics covered by 124 works in the field. Based on our results, we uncover several important gaps in the existing studies. We also provide suggestions on relevant future research directions that could broaden the scope of the management of energy crisis, in line with the concept of organizational resilience.

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calibration method, fluidization, image process, solids holdup, visualization system
Solids holdup as one of the main parameters in characterizing the performance of fluidized bed reactors is widely concerned. With its development and improvement, visualization technology has been applied in fluidization because of its little disturbance to the flow. In this study, four types of particles with different properties are tested in a narrow rectangular fluidized bed equipped with a high-speed video camera. Calibration curves of these different types of particles are achieved by correlating the grayscale of the digital images with the corresponding solids holdup. These calibration curves are further applied to obtain the average solids holdup across the sectional area and local solids holdup from the center towards the wall in both a gas-solids turbulent fluidized bed and a circulating fluidized bed to verify the results. The calibration method works well for solids holdup of different types of particles in both dense and dilute fluidization systems. This method is importan... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: continuous stretching, cyclic stretching, finite element analysis (FEA), human keratocytes, stress distribution
A strain gradient was created by punching a hole in the center of a stretched elastic polydimethylsiloxane membrane to determine the effect of different strains on cultured human keratocytes (HK). In this study, two stretching methods were used: continuous stretching and cyclic stretching. Continuous stretching is relatively static, while acyclic stretching is relatively dynamic. These methods, respectively, represented the effects of high intraocular pressure and rubbing of the eyes on corneal cells. Image processing codes were developed to observe the effects of stress concentration, shear stress, continuous stretching, and cyclic stretching on HKs. The results demonstrate that stretching and shear stress are not conducive to the proliferation of corneal cells and instead cause cell death. A 10% strain had greater inhibitory effects than a 3% strain on cell proliferation. Cell survival rates for continuous stretching (static) were higher than those for cyclic stretching (dynamic). Milena Bors, Robert Klewicki, Michał Sójka, Elżbieta Klewicka
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fructosyl-sorbitol, sorbitol, sucrose, transfructosylation
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected reaction parameters—temperature (37−57 °C), pH (5.8−7.9), substrates ratio (sucrose/sorbitol 0.5/1.5 to 1.5:0.5 (m/m)), and the presence of NaCl—on the course of fructosyl-sorbitol synthesis with an enzyme preparation (11 760 U/100 g of sucrose) containing fructosyltransferase and β-d-fructofuranosidase from Aspergillus niger. A mixture of at least three fructosyl sorbitol derivatives was obtained: two mono-fructosyl and one di-fructosyl. The highest content of all sorbitol derivatives combined was 2.7 g/100 mL for pH 6.8−6.9, and the sucrose/sorbitol ratio was 1:1. Increasing the reaction temperature from 37 to 57 °C reduced the time required to reach the maximum product content from 5 to 2 h, while the concentration did not increase. The addition of NaCl (0.63 M) extended the reaction time from 2 to 5 h and slightly lowered the maximum concentration of sorbitol derivatives (from 2.74 to 2.6 g/100 mL).

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Extraction, in-situ observation, mechanical–structural property, oil yield, Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed
Products from Xanthoceras sorbifolium Bunge seed have gained extensive attention for various applications, especially in the fields of edible oils and industrial applications. In order to study seed kernel mechanical−structural behavior and oil yield mechanisms during extrusion, we set up a self-developed texture analyzer with in situ microscope observation. Test results indicated that seed kernel oil yield and pressing energy showed an approximately parabolic shape under pressing strain, and maximum oil yield reached 25.7%. Only local tissue damage occurred on seed kernels at strain 45−85%, cracks formed from the kernel edge to the inside zone and small cracks obviously increased in number, corresponding with the oil yield and energy−strain curve. The effect of speed on oil yield showed an opposite trend to strain effect; high pressing speed led to lower oil yield due to the short time for oil precipitation and lower pressing energy. Dwell time obviously promoted oil output within 600... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alkali lignin, cellulase, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulose, non-productive adsorption, ozone treatment
In this study, the structural changes of alkali lignin induced by ozonation were investigated, and the effect of ozone-treated alkali lignin and its mechanism on Avicel enzymatic hydrolysis was examined. The physicochemical properties of alkali lignin were analyzed by FTIR, 1H-13C HSQC NMR, and GPC. It was revealed that ozone pretreatment increased the content of carboxyl and/or aldehyde groups and the negative zeta potential of alkali lignin, which enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between alkali lignin and cellulase; The S/G ratio was reduced, indicating the hydrophobic interaction was diminished. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm showed that the cellulase binding strength of ozone pretreated alkali lignin (OL-pH3, OL-pH7, and OL-pH12 were 16.67, 13.87, and 44.05 mL/g, respectively) was significantly lower than that of alkali lignin (161.29 mL/g). The 72 h hydrolysis yields of Avicel added with OL-pH3, OL-pH7, and OL-pH12 were 55.4%, 58.6%, and 54.9% respectively, which were 2.6−6.... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamic characteristics, asymmetric airfoil, hot-wire, shape inaccuracies, the structure of turbulent, wake topology
The scope of this paper is to perform a detailed experimental investigation of the shape error effect on the turbulence evolution behind NACA 64-618 airfoil. This airfoil is 3D-printed with predefined typical shape inaccuracies. A high-precision optical 3D scanner was used to assess the shape and surface quality of the manufactured models. The turbulent flow was studied using hot-wire anemometry. The developed force balance device was provided to measure the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil. Experimental studies were carried out for three angles of attack, +10∘, 0∘, −10∘, and different chord-based Reynolds numbers from 5.3×104 to 2.1×105. The obtained results show that the blunt trailing edge and rough surface decline the aerodynamic performance of the blades. In addition, the experimental results revealed a strong sensitivity of the Taylor microscale Reynolds number to the type of shape inaccuracy, especially at Re≈1.7×105. We also discuss the evolution of the Reynolds stres... [more]

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pump drying, kelp, kinetics, moisture uniformity, thermodynamic properties
The main objective of this research is the study of the drying kinetics and thermodynamic properties of kelp using heat pump drying technology. The effects of the independent variables of temperature (20−50 °C), air velocity (0.3−1.3 m/s), humidity (20−50%), and thickness (0.8−4.2 mm) on the drying time, moisture uniformity, effective moisture diffusivity (Deff), activation energy (Ea), enthalpy (ΔH), entropy (ΔS), and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) were investigated. The results show that the Page model was effective in describing the moisture content change of kelp during heat pump drying. The Deff varied from 1.00 × 10−11 to 13.00 × 10−11 m2/s and the temperature, air velocity, humidity, and thickness had significant effects on drying time and moisture uniformity. Higher temperature and air velocity with proper humidity shortened the drying time and lessened the influence of thickness on moisture uniformity. The Ea (16.38−26.66 kJ/mol) and ΔH (13.69−24.22 kJ/mol) were significantly increase... [more]

Keywords: aroma, sulphur, thiols, wine, yeast
During the alcoholic fermentation of grape sugars, wine yeast produces a range of secondary metabolites that play a critical role in the aroma profile of wines. One of the most impactful yeast-modified compound families, particularly in white wines, are the ‘fruity’ polyfunctional thiols, which include 3-mercaptohexan-1-ol (3-MH) and 4-mercapto-4-methylpentan-2-one (4-MMP). While the formation and stylistic contribution of these thiols have been extensively researched in white wines, little is known about the conditions leading to their formation in red wines. In this study, we explored the ability of yeast strains to modulate the release of these aroma compounds during the fermentation of two red musts. In laboratory-scale Pinot Noir fermentations, the formation of 3-MH strongly correlated with yeast β-lyase activity, particularly with the presence of certain genotypes of the flavour-releasing gene IRC7. Subsequent production of Grenache wine at the pilot scale, with detailed composit... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: AlGaInP-based red μ-LEDs, nitride-based μ-LEDs, random alloy fluctuations, sidewall-trap
The efficiency of micro-light-emitting diodes (μ-LEDs) depends enormously on the chip size, and this is connected to sidewall-trap-assisted nonradiative recombination. It is known that the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of aluminum gallium indium phosphide (AlGaInP)-based red μ-LEDs is much lower than that of nitride-based μ-LEDs. To establish the major reasons giving rise to this huge IQE discrepancy, we examined the limiting factors in the two structures. For the nitride-based InGaN quantum wells, the influences of random alloy fluctuations were examined. A two-dimensional Poisson and drift-diffusion solver was applied to analyze these issues.
A New Camera Calibration Technique for Serious Distortion

March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: 2D pattern, camera calibration, flexible plane-based calibration, image restoration, plane pattern
A new camera calibration technique based on serious distortion is proposed, which only requires the camera to observe the plane pattern in an arbitrary azimuth. It uses the geometrical imaging principle and radial distortion model to acquire radial lens distortion coefficient and the image coordinate (u0, v0), and then solves the linear equation aiming at the other parameters of the camera. This method has the following characteristics: Firstly, the position of the camera and the plane is arbitrary, and the technique needs only a single observation for plane pattern. Secondly, it is suitable for camera calibration with serious distortion. Thirdly, it does not need expensive ancillary equipment, accurate movement, or lots of photos observed from different orientations. Having been authenticated by computer emulation and actual experiment, the results of the proposed technique have proved to be satisfactory. The research has also paved a new way in camera calibration for further studies.

The way in which people speak reveals a lot about where they are from, where they were raised, and also where they have recently lived. When communicating in a foreign language or second language, accents from one’s first language are likely to emerge, giving an individual a ‘strange’ accent. This is a great and challenging problem. Not particularly, because it is a part of one’s personality that they do not have to give up. It is only challenging when pronunciation causes a disruption in communication between an individual and the individuals with whom they are speaking. Making oneself understandable is the goal of perfecting English pronunciations. Many people require their pronunciation to be perfect, such as those individuals working in the healthcare industry, where it is rather critical that each term be read precisely. Speak Correct offers each of its users a service that assists them with any English pronunciation concerns that may arise. Some of the pronunciation improvements... [more]

Keywords: autogenous oxidation/reduction, equilibrium potential, highly conjugated polymer, intrinsically conducting polymers, open circuit potential, polyaniline
In this work, we have shown through open circuit potential experiments that in aqueous sulfuric acid solutions, a thick polyaniline film undergoes autogenous oxidation when reduced below a threshold potential and autogenous reduction when oxidized above the threshold potential. This phenomenon is associated with the high resonance stability of polarons in long polyaniline chains present in thicker films. We have determined the rates of these reactions using a linear sweep chronopotentiometry technique. We propose that the oxidation reaction of polyaniline produces polarons with a concomitant reduction of hydrogen ions to hydrogen radicals, which further combine with each other to produce the hydrogen molecule in the absence of dissolved oxygen. On the other hand, at high potentials polarons are reduced with the concomitant oxidation of water to hydroxyl radicals. Both the radicals are stabilized due to the interaction of their unpaired electrons with pi-electrons of the aromatic rings... [more]

Keywords: active filter, FIR filter, repetitive controllers, stability
Repetitive controllers (RCs) are linear control structures based on the internal model principle. This control strategy is known for its ability to control periodic reference signals, even if these signals have many harmonic components. Despite being a solution that results in a good performance, several parameters of the repetitive controller need to be correctly tuned to guarantee its stability. Among these parameters, one that has high impact on the system performance and stability is the finite impulse response (FIR) filter, which is usually used to increase the stability domain of RC-based controllers. In this context, this paper presents a complete tutorial for designing the zero-phase FIR filter, which is often used to stabilize control systems that use RC-based controllers. In addition, this paper presents a Matlab® application developed for performing the stability analysis of RC systems and designing its FIR filter. α-amylases are ubiquitous enzymes belonging to the glycosyl hydrolase (GH13) family, whose members share a high degree of sequence identity, even between distant organisms. To understand the determinants of catalytic activity of α-amylases throughout evolution, and to investigate the use of homologous enzymes as a model for the human one, we compared human salivary α-amylase, Aspergillus oryzae α-amylase and pancreatic porcine α-amylase, using a combination of in vitro and in silico approaches. Enzyme sequences were aligned, and structures superposed, whereas kinetics were spectroscopically studied by using commercial synthetic substrates. These three enzymes show strikingly different activities, specifically mediated by different ions, despite relevant structural homology. Our study confirms that the function of α-amylases throughout evolution has considerably diverged, although key structural determinants, such as the catalytic triad and the calcium-binding pocket, have been retained...
