Approaches for Modelling the Physical Behavior of Technical Systems on the Example of Wind Turbines
Ralf Stetter
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abstract physics, behavior modelling, control engineering, design engineering, wind turbines
Models of technical systems are an essential means in design and product-development processes. A large share of technical systems, or at least subsystems, are directly or indirectly connected with the generation or transformation of energies. In design science, elaborated modelling approaches were developed for different levels of product concretization, for instance, requirement models and function models, which support innovation and new product-development processes, as well as for energy-generating or -transforming systems. However, on one product-concretization level, the abstract level that describes the physical behavior, research is less mature, and an overview of the approaches, their respective advantages, and the connection possibilities between them and other modelling forms is difficult to achieve. This paper proposes a novel discussion structure based on modelling perspectives and digital-engineering frameworks. In this structure, current approaches are described and ill... [more]
The Possible Roles of Wastewater Treatment Plants in Sector Coupling
Michael Schäfer, Oliver Gretzschel, Heidrun Steinmetz
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: decarbonization, energy concepts, long-term energy storage, power-to-gas, power-to-X
The development of a power system based on high shares of renewable energy sources puts high demands on power grids and the remaining controllable power generation plants, load management and the storage of energy. To reach climate protection goals and a significant reduction of CO2, surplus energies from fluctuating renewables have to be used to defossilize not only the power production sector but the mobility, heat and industry sectors as well, which is called sector coupling. In this article, the role of wastewater treatment plants by means of sector coupling is pictured, discussed and evaluated. The results show significant synergies—for example, using electrical surplus energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen with an electrolyzer to use them for long-term storage and enhancing purification processes on the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Furthermore, biofuels and storable methane gas can be produced or integrate the WWTP into a local heating network. An interconnection in many fi... [more]
A Study of Wind Turbine Performance Decline with Age through Operation Data Analysis
Raymond Byrne, Davide Astolfi, Francesco Castellani, Neil J. Hewitt
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: machines ageing, performance monitoring, multivariate regression, power curve, useful lifetime, wind energy, wind turbines
Ageing of technical systems and machines is a matter of fact. It therefore does not come as a surprise that an energy conversion system such as a wind turbine, which in particular operates under non-stationary conditions, is subjected to performance decline with age. The present study presents an analysis of the performance deterioration with age of a Vestas V52 wind turbine, installed in 2005 at the Dundalk Institute of Technology campus in Ireland. The wind turbine has operated from October 2005 to October 2018 with its original gearbox, that has subsequently been replaced in 2019. Therefore, a key point of the present study is that operation data spanning over thirteen years have been analysed for estimating how the performance degrades in time. To this end, one of the most innovative approaches for wind turbine performance control and monitoring has been employed: a multivariate Support Vector Regression with Gaussian Kernel, whose target is the power output of the wind turbine. On... [more]

Julián Chaparro-Peláez, Emiliano Acquila-Natale, Ángel Hernández-García, Santiago Iglesias-Pradas
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: channel integration, digital transformation, electricity retailing, end user
The deregulation of the electricity markets in the European Union and the transformation caused by digital technologies and customer-centric strategies have altered the industry ecosystem, forcing companies to adapt to the new scenario. This research study aims to give a global overview of the digital transformation and channel integration of free-market electricity retailers in Spain from a consumer’s perspective. The analysis includes all free-market electricity retailers that operate at the national scale, explores the level of digital transformation and channel integration of these companies based on a structured set of indicators, and measures them using the mystery shopper technique. The results show important differences between leading retailers and the rest of companies, evidence an important lag of the sector when compared to other retail markets and an overall lack of multichannel and omnichannel strategies, show a strong effort of retailers in online billing and self-servic... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering, data-based modeling, data-driven modeling, energy management, least-squares regression, linear regression, nonlinear optimization, self-consumption optimization, simulated annealing
In the transfer from fossil fuels to renewable energies, grid operators, companies and farms develop an increasing interest in smart energy management systems which can reduce their energy expenses. This requires sufficiently detailed models of the underlying components and forecasts of generation and consumption over future time horizons. In this work, it is investigated via a real-world case study how data-based methods based on regression and clustering can be applied to this task, such that potentially extensive effort for physical modeling can be decreased. Models and automated update mechanisms are derived from measurement data for a photovoltaic plant, a heat pump, a battery storage, and a washing machine. A smart energy system is realized in a real household to exploit the resulting models for minimizing energy expenses via optimization of self-consumption. Experimental data are presented that illustrate the models’ performance in the real-world system. The study concludes that... [more]
Minimizing Power Consumption of an Experimental HVAC System Based on Parallel Grid Searching
Wangqi Xiong, Jiandong Wang
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: graphics processing unit, HVAC systems, parallel computing, power consumption optimization
This paper proposes a parallel grid search algorithm to find an optimal operating point for minimizing the power consumption of an experimental heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. First, a multidimensional, nonlinear and non-convex optimization problem subject to constraints is formulated based on a semi-physical model of the experimental HVAC system. Second, the optimization problem is parallelized based on Graphics Processing Units to simultaneously compute optimization loss functions for different solutions in a searching grid, and to find the optimal solution as the one having the minimum loss function. The proposed algorithm has an advantage that the optimal solution is known with evidence as to the best one subject to current resolutions of the searching grid. Experimental studies are provided to support the proposed algorithm.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: load model of rock bolts, rock bolt support, stratified rock mass, yielding
The article presents a novel yielding mechanism, especially designed for the rock bolt support. Mechanical rock bolts with an expansion head and equipped with one, two, four and six dome bearing plates were tested in the laboratory conditions. Furthermore, in the Phase2D numerical program, five room and pillar widths were modeled. The main aim of numerical modeling was to determine the maximal range of the rock damage area and the total displacements in the expanded room. The models were made for a room and pillar method with a roof sag for copper ore deposits in the Legnica-Głogów Copper District in Poland. Additionally, in the article a load model of the rock bolt support as a result of a geomechanical seismic event is presented. Based on the results of laboratory tests (load−displacement characteristics), the strain energy of the bolt support equipped with the yielding device in the form of dome bearing plates was determined and compared with the impact energy caused by predicted fa... Md Tanvir Alam, Se-Won Park, Sang-Yeop Lee, Yean-Ouk Jeong, Anthony De Girolamo, Yong-Chil Seo, Hang Seok Choi
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, gas pollutants, gasification, solid recovered fuel, Syngas, waste
Solid recovered fuel (SRF) residue, which is leftovers from the SRF manufacturing process, usually is discarded in landfill because of its low heating value and high ash and moisture content. However, it could be used as a fuel after mechanical and biological treatment. Gasification experiments were conducted on treated SRF residue (TSRFR) to assess the viability of syngas production. Efforts were also made to improve the gasification performance by adding low-cost natural minerals such as dolomite and lime as bed material, and by blending with biomass waste. In the case of additive mineral tests, dolomite showed better performance compared to lime, and in the case of biomass blends, a 25 wt% pine sawdust blend with TSRFR showed the best performance. Finally, as an appropriate condition, a combined experiment was conducted at an equivalence ratio (ER) of 0.2 using a 25 wt% pine sawdust blend with TSRFR as a feedstock and dolomite as the bed material. The highest dry gas yield (1.81 Nm3... [more]

Magda Pęska, Tomasz Czujko, Marek Polański
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen storage, hydrogenation properties, Mg-Li alloy
The Mg-Li binary system is characterized by the presence of α-Mg(Li) and β-Li(Mg) phases, where magnesium exists in ordered and disordered forms that may affect the hydrogenation properties of magnesium. Therefore, the hydrogenation properties of an AZ31 alloy modified by the addition of 4.0 wt.%, 7.5 wt.% and 15.0 wt.% lithium were studied. The morphology (scanning electron microscopy (SEM)), structure, phase composition (X-ray diffraction (XRD)) and hydrogenation properties (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)) of AZ31 with various lithium contents were investigated. It was found that the susceptibility of magnesium in the form of α-Mg(Li) to hydrogenation was higher than that for the magnesium occupying a disordered position in β-Li(Mg) solid solutions. Magnesium hydride was obtained as a result of hydrogenation of the AZ31 alloy that was modified with 4.0 wt.%, 7.5 wt.% and 15.0 wt.% additions of lithium, and was characterized by high hydrogen desorption activation energies of... Ernesto Antonini, Vincenzo Vodola, Jacopo Gaspari, Michaela De Giglio
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: human thermal perception, outdoor thermal comfort, quality of life, thermal comfort assessment
While indoor comfort represents a widely investigated research topic with relation to sustainable development and energy-demand reduction in the built environment, outdoor comfort remains an open field of study, especially with reference to the impacts of climate change and the quality of life for inhabitants, particularly in urban contexts. Despite the relevant efforts spent in the last few decades to advance the understanding of phenomena and the knowledge in this specific field, which obtained much evidence for the topic’s relevance, a comprehensive picture of the studies, as well as a classification of the interconnected subjects and outcomes, is still lacking. This paper reports the outcomes of a literature review aimed at screening the available resources dealing with outdoor thermal comfort, in order to provide a state-of-the-art review that identifies the main topics focused by the researchers, as well as the barriers in defining suitable indexes for assessing thermal comfort i... A Hybrid Reactive Power Control Method of Distributed Generation to Mitigate Voltage Rise in Low-Voltage Grid
Soo-Bin Kim, Seung-Ho Song
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, distribution network, inverter-based generator, reactive power control, voltage control, voltage regulation
A high penetration of distributed generators, such as solar and wind power generators in low voltage network systems, impose voltage rise problems. Reactive power control of distributed generators can contribute to mitigating the voltage rise. In the existing reactive power control, reactive power was controlled using only one local variable, such as voltage at point of connection or the active power output of distributed generator. In case of PF(P) method, which provides certain power factors, depending on the active power of distributed generator, the voltage regulation ability is strong, but network losses are large. Q(V) method, which provides a certain amount of reactive power depending on the local voltage, has few network losses, but the voltage regulation ability is weak. In this paper, a reactive power control method that combines the PF(P) method and Q(V) method was proposed. The proposed method determines the reactive power output by using the active power of the distributed... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HVDC, MMC, mutual interactions, small-signal analysis, state-space model
This paper investigates the dynamic behavior of a modular multi-level converter (MMC)-based HVDC link. An overall state-space model is developed to identify the system critical modes, considering the dynamics of the master MMC and slave MMC, their control systems, and the HVDC cable. Complementary to the state-space model, an impedance-based model is also derived to obtain the minimum phase margin (PM) of the system. In addition, a relative gain array (RGA) analysis is conducted to quantify the level of interactions among the control systems of master and slave MMCs and their impacts on stability. Finally, with the help of the results obtained from the system analysis (eigenvalue, phase margin, sensitivity, and RGA), the system dynamic performance is improved.

Honghua Yang, Linwei Ma, Zheng Li
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon flow, energy allocation analysis, energy system, energy-related carbon emissions, Sankey diagrams, structural changes, TRO index
To systematically analyze energy-related carbon emissions from the perspective of comprehensive energy flow and allocate emissions responsibility, we introduce energy allocation analysis to carbon flow process based on Sankey diagrams. Then, to quantitatively compare different diagrams and evaluate the structural changes of carbon flow, we define changes from three dimensions including total amount change, relative growth rate and occupation ratio change (TRO), propose TRO index. The method is applied to China’s case study from 2005 to 2015. We map China’s energy-related carbon flow Sankey diagrams with high technical resolution from energy sources, intermediate conversion, end-use devices, passive systems to final services, and conduct TRO index decomposition by stages. The results indicate that in energy sources, the emission share of coal has declined due to energy transition although coal is still the largest contributor to China’s energy-related carbon emissions. In passive system... [more]
Design of an Observer-Based Architecture and Non-Linear Control Algorithm for Cogging Torque Reduction in Synchronous Motors
Pierpaolo Dini, Sergio Saponara
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque, extended Kalman filter, feedback linearization, non-linear control, power drive system, state observer, synchronous permanent magnets motor
The problem of cogging torque is due to a magnetic behavior, intrinsic to synchronous machines and due to the presence of permanent magnets themselves. Cogging torque is a significant problem when the servo drive is used for applications where high precision in terms of position control is required. In this paper we present a method of cogging torque reduction by means of a control technique based on mathematical modeling of the cogging phenomenon itself in order to exploit this knowledge directly in the controller design. The mathematical model is inserted in the dynamic model of the synchronous machine in order to exploit the feedback linearization, providing an expression of the control law in which the contribution of the deterministic knowledge of the phenomenon is directly present. The cogging phenomenon physically depends on the angular position of the rotor, as well as the deterministic model we use to define the control vector. This makes it interesting and innovative to deter... [more]

Christopher D. Wood, Thomas E. Amidon, Timothy A. Volk, Rachel M. Emerson
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, biorefining, hot water extraction, short rotation woody crops, willow biomass
Short rotation woody crops (SRWC) like shrub willow are highly productive biomass resources of interest for energy and fuel applications. Hot water extraction (HWE) as an upgrading tool to enable the use of willow biomass in pellet applications has been proposed, and is of increasing interest. This study treats willow and mixes of willow and conventional mixed hardwood feedstock with HWE in a tumbling laboratory reactor to elucidate the effects of time, temperature, feedstock mixes, and other process considerations (water:biomass ratio, presteaming, counter-current processing) on mass removals and other extraction outcomes (e.g., sugar, acetate, and furan yields). Results demonstrated alignment of extraction outcomes with P-factor from 155 °C to 175 °C, with a good compromise of removed mass and co-product potential in the range from 575−800 P-factor. The preferred condition was chosen as 575 P-factor. HWE of mixes of willow and hardwood feedstocks showed a linear response of extractio... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: consumer behavior, consumer segmentation, eco-friendliness, engine oil sustainability, model-based clustering, oil market, professional drivers
The aim of the article was to analyze the decision-making process of professional drivers regarding the choice of new engine oil with additional attention to the eco-friendliness aspect of the product. Survey data were collected from Polish consumers, using a self-administered questionnaire. The main data analysis tools used in the study were finite mixture models. It was found that professional drivers do not constitute a single homogenous group. They cluster into two segments with differing importance profiles. The largest consumer segment, over 80% of consumers, consider the quality classification, viscosity classification, and OEM specifications as the most important criteria during the decision-making process. The importance of oil being environmentally friendly is a factor moderately differentiating the subgroups. In the first segment, a strong preference for engine oil with the same technical parameters as the previously purchased one, but additionally marked as environmentally... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, heat pumps, IDA ICE, intermittent heating, model predictive control (MPC), proportional–integral–derivative (PID) control, thermostats
In rooms with underfloor heating (UFH), local on−off controllers most often regulate the air temperature with poor accuracy and energy penalties. It is known that proportional−integral (PI) controllers can regulate most processes more precisely. However, hydronic UFH systems have long time constants, especially in low-energy buildings, and PI parameters are not easy to set manually. In this work, several potential PI parameter estimation methods were applied, including optimizing the parameters in GenOpt, calculating the parameters based on simplified models, and tuning the parameters automatically in Matlab. For all found parameter combinations, the energy consumption and control precision were evaluated. Simpler methods were compared to the optimal solutions to find similar parameters. Compared with an on−off controller with a 0.5 K dead-band, the best PI parameter combination found was with a proportional gain of 18 and an integration time of 2300 s, which could decrease the energy... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Exergy Efficiency, financial analysis, organic Rankine cycle, parabolic trough collector, trigeneration
The utilization of solar irradiation in the building sector is vital to create sustainable systems. Trigeneration systems are highly efficient systems that usually produce electricity, heating and cooling which are the main energy needs in the buildings. The objective of this work is the energetic and financial investigation of three different solar-driven trigeneration systems that can be applied in buildings with high energy needs (e.g., hospitals or commercial buildings). The parabolic trough solar collector (PTC) is selected to be used because it is the most mature solar concentrating technology. The examined configurations practically are different combinations of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with heat pumps. System 1 includes a PTC coupled to an ORC which feeds an absorption heat pump machine. System 2 includes a PTC which simultaneously feeds an ORC and absorption machine. System 3 includes a PTC which feeds an ORC and a heat exchanger for heating, while the ORC is fed with and e... [more]

Keywords: CFX, heat, mass, moisture, numerical simulation, temperature
In the manufacturing process of ceramic brick, the step of drying needs the control of process variables to uniformly dry the porous material, producing a good end-product. The majority of numerical simulations involving drying of ceramic materials is performed considering only the solid domain, resulting in a very simplified and limited study. This way, the objective of this work is the analysis of the drying process with hot air of an industrial hollow clay brick inside the oven at different temperatures by using computational fluid dynamic (CFD). The results of the temperature and water mass distribution inside the brick and of air in the oven at different times of the drying process are shown, analyzed and checked with experimental data, and it was obtained in a concordance with the data. An equation to calculate the brick water mass diffusivity depending on the drying air temperature was proposed.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Mitigation of CO2-equiv., nutrient release, rice paddy water and soil system, slow-release fertilizer
The agro-environmental impact of supplemented biochar manure pellet fertilizer (SBMPF) application was evaluated by exploring changes of the chemical properties of paddy water and soil, carbon sequestration, and grain yield during rice cultivation. The treatments consisted of (1) the control (no biochar), (2) pig manure compost pellet (PMCP), (3) biochar manure pellets (BMP) with urea solution heated at 60 °C (BMP-U60), (4) BMP with N, P, and K solutions at room temperature (BMP-NPK), and (5) BMP with urea and K solutions at room temperature (BMP-UK). The NO3−−N and PO4−−P concentrations in the control and PMCP in the paddy water were relatively higher compared to SBMPF applied plots. For paddy soil, NH4+−N concentration in the control was lower compared to the other SBMPFs treatments 41 days after rice transplant. Additionally, it is possible that the SBMPFs could decrease the phosphorus levels in agricultural ecosystems. Also, the highest carbon sequestration was 2.67 tonnes C ha−1 i... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engine, fuel consumption, heavy-duty vehicles, hybrid powertrain, mathematical modeling, natural gas engine, supercapacitor
This article describes a study that aimed to estimate the fuel-saving potential possessed by the hybridization of conventional powertrains intended for heavy-duty vehicles based on diesel and natural gas fueled engines. The tools used for this analysis constitute mathematical models of vehicle dynamics and the powertrain, including its components, i.e., the engine, electric drive, transmission, and energy storage system (ESS). The model of the latter, accompanied by experimental data, allowed for an analysis of employing a supercapacitor regarding the selection of its energy content and the interface between the traction electric drive and the ESS (in light of the wide voltage operating range of supercapacitors). The results revealed the influence of these factors on both the supercapacitor efficiency (during its operation within a powertrain) and the vehicle fuel economy. After implementation of the optimized ESS design within the experimentally validated vehicle model, simulations we... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frozen soil, numerical modeling, power transmission line, reduced-scale modeling test, ultimate uplift load
In order to analyze the uplift bearing capacity of cone-cylinder foundation for transmission line in frozen soil regions, a series of reduced-scale modeling tests and numerical simulations are carried out. First, three reduced-scale cone-cylinder foundations with the same sizes, that are five times smaller than the prototype, are made and then loaded under uplift load at −5 °C, −10 °C, and −15 °C, respectively. On this basis, the foundations of nine sizes are modeled and loaded by numerical simulation. The impact of three dimension factors, including the ratio of depth to bottom width ( λ = h t / D t ), the top diameter of the cone-cylinder (d), and the bottom diameter of the cone-cylinder (D), on the uplift bearing capacity of foundations have been investigated. The results reveal that, for cone-cylinder foundation, the uplift bearing capacity is obviously affected by the freezing temperatures and the foundation sizes. The capacity is negatively correlated with the former. W... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: adaptive differential evolution, evolutionary game theory, grey relevance theory, least squares support vector machine, terminal clean power consumption forecast
In recent years, China’s terminal clean power replacement construction has experienced rapid development, and China’s installed photovoltaic and wind energy capacity has soared to become the highest in the world. Precise and effective prediction of the scale of terminal clean power replacement can not only help make reasonable adjustments to the proportion of clean power capacity, but also promote the reduction of carbon emissions and enhance environmental benefits. In order to predict the prospects of China’s terminal clean energy consumption, first of all, the main factors affecting the clean power of the terminal are screened by using the grey revelance theory. Then, an evolutionary game theory (EGT) optimized least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) machine intelligence algorithm and an adaptive differential evolution (ADE) algorithm are applied in the example analysis, and empirical analysis shows that this model has a strong generalization ability, and that the prediction res... Keywords: biochar, maize, oats, straw, torrefaction
This publication presents research work which contains the optimum parameters of the agri-biomass: maize and oat straws torrefaction process. Parameters which are the most important for the torrefaction process and its products are temperature and residence time. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed as well as the torrefaction process using an electrical furnace on a laboratory scale at a temperature between 250−525 °C. These biomass torrefaction process parameters—residence time and temperature—were necessary to perform the design and construction of semi-pilot scale biomass torrefaction installations with a regimental dryer and a woody and agri-biomass regimental torrefaction reactor to perform a continuous torrefaction process using superheated steam. In the design installation the authors also focused on biochar, a bi-product of biofuel which will be used as an additive for natural bio-fertilizers.
