Dynamic Mode Decomposition Analysis of Spatially Agglomerated Flow Databases
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering algorithms, dynamic mode decomposition, feature detection, flow reconstruction, Machine Learning, modal decompositions, spatial agglomeration, turbulent flows
Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) techniques have risen as prominent feature identification methods in the field of fluid dynamics. Any of the multiple variables of the DMD method allows to identify meaningful features from either experimental or numerical flow data on a data-driven manner. Performing a DMD analysis requires handling matrices V ∈ R n p × N , where n p and N are indicative of the spatial and temporal resolutions. The DMD analysis of a complex flow field requires long temporal sequences of well resolved data, and thus the memory footprint may become prohibitively large. In this contribution, the effect that principled spatial agglomeration (i.e., reduction in n p via clustering) has on the results derived from the DMD analysis is investigated. We compare twelve different clustering algorithms on three testcases, encompassing different flow regimes: a synthetic flow field, a R e D = 60 flow around a cylinder cross section, and a R... [more]

Potential Map for the Installation of Concentrated Solar Power Towers in Chile
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: central receiver, concentrated solar power, levelized cost of energy, solar energy, solar potential
This study aims to build a potential map for the installation of a central receiver concentrated solar power plant in Chile under the terms of the average net present cost of electricity generation during its lifetime. This is also called the levelized cost of electricity, which is a function of electricity production, capital costs, operational costs and financial parameters. The electricity production, capital and operational costs were defined as a function of the location through the Chilean territory. Solar resources and atmospheric conditions for each site were determined. A 130 MWe concentrated solar power plant was modeled to estimate annual electricity production for each site. The capital and operational costs were identified as a function of location. The electricity supplied by the power plant was tested, quantifying the potential of the solar resources, as well as technical and economic variables. The results reveal areas with great potential for the development of large-s... [more]

Simulation of Immiscible Water-Alternating-CO2 Flooding in the Liuhua Oilfield Offshore Guangdong, China
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 storage, heavy crude oil, immiscible flooding, offshore Guangdong province, reef reservoir, water-alternating-CO2
In this paper, the immiscible water-alternating-CO2 flooding process at the LH11-1 oilfield, offshore Guangdong Province, was firstly evaluated using full-field reservoir simulation models. Based on a 3D geological model and oil production history, 16 scenarios of water-alternating-CO2 injection operations with different water alternating gas (WAG) ratios and slug sizes, as well as continuous CO2 injection (Con-CO2) and primary depletion production (No-CO2) scenarios, have been simulated spanning 20 years. The results represent a significant improvement in oil recovery by CO2 WAG over both Con-CO2 and No-CO2 scenarios. The WAG ratio and slug size of water affect the efficiency of oil recovery and CO2 injection. The optimum operations are those with WAG ratios lower than 1:2, which have the higher ultimate oil recovery factor of 24%. Although WAG reduced the CO2 injection volume, the CO2 storage efficiency is still high, more than 84% of the injected CO2 was sequestered in the reservoir... [more]

Distribution Power Loss Reduction of Standalone DC Microgrids Using Adaptive Differential Evolution-Based Control for Distributed Battery Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Adaptive Differential Evolution (ADE), bus voltage regulation, DC microgrid, distributed battery system (DBS), distribution power loss, hierarchical control
With high penetrations of renewable energy sources (RES), distributed battery systems (DBS) are widely adopted in standalone DC microgrids to stabilize the bus voltages by balancing the active power. This paper presents an Adaptive Differential Evolution (ADE)-based hierarchical control for DBS to achieve online distribution power loss mitigation as well as bus voltage regulations in standalone DC microgrids. The hierarchical control comprises two layers, i.e., ADE for the secondary layer and local proportional-integral (PI) control for the primary layer. The secondary layer control provides the bus voltage references for the primary control by optimizing the fitness function, which contains the parameters of the bus voltage deviations and the power loss on the distribution lines. Simultaneously, the state-of-charge (SoC) of the battery packs are controlled by local controllers to prevent over-charge and deep-discharge. A Study on Developing an Automatic Controller with an Inverter Collector Pump for Solar-Assisted Heating System
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automatic controller, inverter collector pump, solar collector, storage tank, variation flow rate
In this study, based on the optimal equation m = 0.05 Δ T A c (kg/min) of the variable mass flow rate in the collector loop, an automatic controller with an inverter collector pump for the collector loop of the solar-assisted heating system is designed for these experiments and to then be used for real industry. The pump for the collector loop is an inverter type that is controlled by an embedded controller with Windows, based on C# language, and the change of speed depends on the variation of the mass flow rate through the collector loop. The input of the automatic controller with an inverter collector pump is given by a thermocouple input module that is connected to the embedded controller with the RS-485 communication protocol. In this work, the experiments were carried out on three different days, namely a clear day, an intermittently cloudy day and an overcast day, to evaluate the stability and the precision of the automatic controller, as well as the contribution of the... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: CO2 emissions, dairy, energy saving, refrigeration, tank
The energy consumption of sheep milk cooling systems (MCSs) was quantified in this study to provide original information filling a literature gap on the impact of sheep milk cooling on the energy and economic balance in dairy farms. Performance and energy monitoring tests were conducted simultaneously on 22 MCSs in Sardinia (Italy). The results determined the cooling time as a function of the performance class and number of milkings. The Energy Utilization Index (EUI) was applied to measure the energy required to cool down the milk and estimate the incidence on its price. The average EUI was 1.76 kWh 100 L−1 for two-milkings and 2.43 kWh 100 L−1 for four-milkings MCSs, whereas the CO2 emissions ranged from 998 to 1378 g CO2 100 L−1 for two- and four-milkings MCSs, respectively. The estimated energy consumption for the storage of refrigerated sheep milk was 0.12 kWh 100 L−1. The malfunctioning MCSs averagely consumed 31% more energy than regular systems. A Novel Technique for Load Frequency Control of Multi-Area Power Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LFC, MLP, two-area power system, type-2 fuzzy
In this paper, an adaptive type-2 fuzzy controller is proposed to control the load frequency of a two-area power system based on descending gradient training and error back-propagation. The dynamics of the system are completely uncertain. The multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network structure is used to extract Jacobian and estimate the system model, and then, the estimated model is applied to the controller, online. A proportional−derivative (PD) controller is added to the type-2 fuzzy controller, which increases the stability and robustness of the system against disturbances. The adaptation, being real-time and independency of the system parameters are new features of the proposed controller. Carrying out simulations on New England 39-bus power system, the performance of the proposed controller is compared with the conventional PI, PID and internal model control based on PID (IMC-PID) controllers. Investigation of Vortical Structures and Turbulence Characteristics in Corner Separation in an Axial Compressor Stator Using DDES
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compressor, corner separation, DDES, turbulence, vortex
In order to investigate the flow structure and unsteady behavior of three-dimensional corner separation, a delayed detached-eddy simulation (DDES) method based on the Spalart−Allmaras (SA) model is performed on the third-stage stator of a multistage low-speed axial compressor. The stator simulation is validated by experiments before flow mechanism analysis. The complicated flow fields in the stator are then described step by step. Firstly, the structure and development process of vortices in corner separation flow are analyzed. Secondly, the velocity histogram of the monitor points in the mainstream and corner separation regions is obtained, and the velocity distribution of the corner separation region is discussed. Finally, Reynolds stress, Lumley anisotropy, turbulence energy spectra, and helicity density are discussed to understand the turbulence behavior of the corner separation flow in the stator. The results show that the corner separation appears at even the design condition and... [more]

The Effect of Renewable and Nuclear Energy Consumption on Decoupling Economic Growth from CO2 Emissions in Spain
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: business cycle, CO2 emissions, decoupling, renewable and nuclear energy, threshold VAR
This study examines the relationship between renewable and nuclear energy consumption, carbon dioxide emissions and economic growth by using the Granger causality and non-linear impulse response function in a business cycle in Spain. We estimate the threshold vector autoregression (TVAR) model on the basis of annual data from the period 1970−2018, which are disaggregated into quarterly data to obtain robust empirical results through avoiding a sample size problem. Our analysis reveals that economic growth and CO2 emissions are positively correlated during expansions but not during recessions. Moreover, we find that rising nuclear energy consumption leads to decreased CO2 emissions during expansions, while the impact of increasing renewable energy consumption on emissions is negative but insignificant. In addition, there is a positive feedback between nuclear energy consumption and economic growth, but unidirectional positive causality running from renewable energy consumption to econom... [more]

Ethanol Production from High Solid Loading of Rice Straw by Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation in a Non-Conventional Reactor
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Ethanol, Kluyveromyces marxianus, rice straw, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation, vertical ball mill reactor
Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) at high solid loading is a potential approach to improve the economic feasibility of cellulosic ethanol. In this study, SSF using high loading of rice straw was assessed using a vertical ball mill reactor. First, the conditions of temperature and number of glass spheres were optimized at 8% (w/v) initial solids (41.5 °C, 18 spheres). Then, assays were carried out at higher solid loadings (16% and 24% w/v). At 8% or 16% solids, the fermentation efficiency was similar (ηF~75%), but the ethanol volumetric productivity (QP) reduced from 1.50 to 1.14 g/L.h. By increasing the solids to 24%, the process was strongly affected (ηF = 40% and QP = 0.7 g/L.h). To overcome this drawback, three different feeding profiles of 24% pre-treated rice straw were investigated. Gradual feeding of the substrate (initial load of 16% with additions of 4% at 10 and 24 h) and an inoculum level of 3 g/L resulted in a high ethanol titer (52.3 g/L) with QP of 1.1... [more]

Replacement Strategy of Insulators Established by Probability of Failure
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: microstructural study, probability of failure, replacement strategy, tensile load test, Weibull distribution
Insulators comprise only 5% of the capital cost of transmission lines; they are accountable for 70% of line interruptions and 50% of maintenance costs of transmission lines. Major transmission lines situated in different parts of the world were mostly all constructed 30 years ago. These lines have either completed or are approaching the active life at 30 years. It is not possible to replace all insulators at a time in any utility. From a standpoint of consistency, it is quite important to locate insulators that require replacement prior to the occurrence of failure. Recalling these issues, a replacement strategy was modeled on insulator samples, operated at 154 kV, mechanical and electrical rating (M+E) 25,000 lbs and within the 10−50 years (Y) age group, collected in bulk for laboratory evaluation, based on the probability of mechanical failure (P(F)) of insulators. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: deterministic analysis, dose assessment, probabilistic analysis, RESRAD
The decommissioning of nuclear facilities indicates that the site is finally released according to a limited or unlimited site reuse purpose. In this process, the assessment of exposure dose to decommissioning workers and nearby residents is essential. Based on MARSSIM, a widely used decommissioning guideline in the United States, derivation of the exposure dose and derived concentration guideline level (DCGL) is mandatory using the probabilistic analysis of the RESRAD code. Here, DCGL is the radionuclide-specific concentration that satisfies the site release criteria. By applying the priority 1 parameter, which has the greatest effect on the dose, the dose is derived through deterministic and probabilistic analyses. The results were compared and analyzed. The purpose of this study was to provide a basic database that can be applied to the development of parameter lists and distributions suitable for the characteristics of nuclear facilities in South Korea. March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: extrinsic contribution, lead-free, morphotropic phase boundary, piezoelectric ceramics, temperature stability
Temperature stability of dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric properties were investigated in situ by choosing (K,Na)NbO3-(Bi,K)ZrO3 (KNN-BKZ), (K,Na)NbO3-(Bi,Na,K,Li)ZrO3 (KNN-BNKLZ), and (K,Na)NbO3-(Bi,Li)ZrO3-(KNN-BLZ) as representative ceramics with rhombohedral-orthorhombic-tetragonal (R-O-T), R-T, and enriched T phase boundaries, respectively. The KNN-BNKLZ ceramics, which have an R-T phase boundary, showed the highest piezoelectricity but the worst temperature stability. On the other hand, the KNN-BLZ ceramics, which have an enriched T-phase, were slightly worse in terms of piezoelectricity compared to the R-O-T or R-T phase boundary, but their thermal stability was the best. From analyses of an extrinsic contribution by a difference between the small signal d33 and εrPr and an intensity variation of the (002) and (200) X-ray diffraction peaks for the KNN-based ceramics, it was suggested that increasing the extrinsic contribution in the morphotropic phase boundary region... Three-Dimensional Mathematical Model of the Liquid Film Downflow on a Vertical Surface
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dimensionless parameters, gas–liquid, interfacial surface, separation layer, velocity field
Film downflow from captured liquid without wave formation and its destruction is one of the most important aspects in the development of separation equipment. Consequently, it is necessary to create well-organized liquid draining in areas of captured liquid. Thus, the proposed 3D mathematical model of film downflow allows for the determination of the hydrodynamic parameters of the liquid film flow and the interfacial surface. As a result, it was discovered that the interfacial surface depends on the proposed dimensionless criterion, which includes internal friction stress, channel length, and fluid density. Additionally, equations for determining the averaged film thickness, the averaged velocity vectors over the film thickness, the longitudinal and vertical velocity components, and the initial angle of streamline deviation from the vertical axis were analytically obtained.

Electrical Faults Signals Restoring Based on Compressed Sensing Techniques
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: basis pursuit, compressed sensing, matching pursuit, orthogonal matching pursuit, power system, recovering signal
This research focuses on restoring signals caused by power failures in transmission lines using the basis pursuit, matching pursuit, and orthogonal matching pursuit sensing techniques. The original signal corresponds to the instantaneous current and voltage values of the electrical power system. The heuristic known as brute force is used to find the quasi-optimal number of atoms k in the original signal. Next, we search for the minimum number of samples known as m; this value is necessary to reconstruct the original signal from sparse and random samples. Once the values of k and m have been identified, the signal restoration is performed by sampling sparse and random data at other bus bars of the power electrical system. Basis pursuit allows recovering the original signal from 70% of the random samples of the same signal. The higher the number of samples, the longer the restoration times, approximately 12 s for recovering the entire signal. Matching pursuit allows recovering the same p... [more]

A New Analytical Model for Calculating Transient Temperature Response of Vertical Ground Heat Exchangers with a Single U-Shaped Tube
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical model, transient temperature response, U-shaped tube
The transient temperature response is of great importance for evaluating the thermal capacity of ground heat exchangers (GHE). Based on the composition line source theory and superposition principle, we have developed a novel analytical model in Laplace space for calculating the temperature transient response. In comparison to the existing models, this proposed model can account for the fluid thermal storage effect and heat rate difference between the two legs of the single U-tube. With the aid of this proposed model, we conduct a thorough sensitivity analysis to investigate the effects of different influencing factors on the thermal transient response. The calculated results show that fluid thermal storage and the rate difference can significantly influence the thermal response during the early studied period. Therefore, the effect of fluid thermal storage should not be neglected when the early-time thermal response is investigated. The thermal interference between the two legs will r... [more]

The energy-optimal routing of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the context of parcel delivery is more complicated than for conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles, in which the total travel distance is the most critical metric. The total energy consumption of EV delivery strongly depends on the order of delivery because of transported parcel weight changing over time, which directly affects the battery efficiency. Therefore, it is not suitable to find an optimal routing solution with traditional routing algorithms such as the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), which use a static quantity (e.g., distance) as a metric. In this paper, we explore appropriate metrics considering the varying transported parcel total weight and achieve a solution for the least-energy delivery problem using EVs. We implement an electric truck simulator based on EV powertrain model and nonlinear battery model. We evaluate different metrics to assess their quality on small size instances for which the op...
