Impact Analysis of Transmission Congestion on Power System Flexibility in Korea
Changgi Min
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexibility, korean power system, net transfer capacity (NTC), ramping capability shortage expectation (RSE), renewable energy resource, transmission congestion, transmission reinforcement
This study proposes a method to evaluate the impact of transmission congestion on the flexibility of a power system, based on the ramping capability shortage expectation (RSE). Here, flexibility refers to the ability to retain a power balance in response to changes in the net load. The flexibility issue arises due to the extensive integration of renewable energy resources; specifically, the higher the degree of integration, and the greater the variability and uncertainty in the power system. Flexibility is further limited by the net transfer capacity (NTC) of transmission lines. Here, we propose a method capable of capturing the extent to which transmission congestion affects the power system, to identify transmission reinforcement options for improved flexibility. In Korea, transmission congestion occurs frequently in regions to the north and southeast. A case study for a Korean power system in 2030 was conducted. Simulation results showed that the impact of transmission reinforcement... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ICT, interoperability, smart buildings, smart city, Sustainability
The aim of this study is to define the features that smart buildings should fulfil in order to be compatible with the overall context of the smart city and to introduce a new evaluation framework of Smart Buildings Integration into a Smart City (SBISC). By analysing scientific literature as well as existing international and local project examples, the features of smart buildings that are expected to be adopted in smart cities were identified. The SBISC evaluation methodology was developed and applied to a set of selected projects. The literature review revealed that the smart building and smart city concepts were developed in different time frames and by different stakeholders and, thus, need to be realigned. The most important aspect is to employ in a smart building all the functionalities proposed by the smart areas of the city and vice versa by enabling the recommended features of smart materials, smart building services, and smart construction to serve for the surrounding systems.... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experimental analysis, PCM thermal storage, solar gains, trombe wall
The use of passive solutions for building envelopes represents an important step toward the achievement of more efficient and zero-energy building targets. Trombe walls are an interesting and viable option for the reduction of building energy requirements for heating, especially in cold climates. This study presents the experimental analysis of an innovative Trombe wall configuration, named a thermo-diode Trombe wall, which was specifically designed to improve the energy efficiency by providing a proper level of insulation for the building envelope. Such a design is essential in cold climates to limit the thermal losses whilst increasing solar heat gains to the heated spaces. An experimental campaign was conducted from December to March that involved monitoring the external climatic conditions and the main thermal parameters to assess the thermal performance of the proposed solution. The results demonstrated that in the presence of solar radiation, the thermo-diode Trombe wall was able... [more]

Joon-Ho Kim, Jin-O Kim
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: back-to-back inrush current, capacitor switching, harmonic filter banks, switching transients, transient recovery voltage
This paper presents the switching transients of medium-voltage low-harmonic filter banks, which have alower back-to-back inrush current and higher transient recovery voltage (TRV) compared with capacitor banks. The switching transients of the filter banks are described by the analytical approach and field measurements for 150 MVA back-to-back filter banks are provided to support the switching phenomena described in this paper. As a mitigation measure of the high transient recovery voltage, a double-breaker type switchgear is analyzed in terms of the operating sequence and the time of the upper and lower breakers. From the analyses, an operation scheme for the double-breaker switchgear is proposed to avoid insulation failure of the breaker during the interruption by mitigating the transient recovery voltage across each breaker.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bimetallic alloys, catalysts, density functional theory, Machine Learning, surface segregation energy
Surface chemical composition of bimetallic catalysts can differ from the bulk composition because of the segregation of the alloy components. Thus, it is very useful to know how the different components are arranged on the surface of catalysts to gain a fundamental understanding of the catalysis occurring on bimetallic surfaces. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations can provide deeper insight into the surface segregation behavior and help understand the surface composition on bimetallic surfaces. However, the DFT calculations are computationally demanding and require large computing platforms. In this regard, statistical/machine learning methods provide a quick and alternative approach to study materials properties. Here, we trained previously reported surface segregation energies on low index surfaces of bimetallic catalysts using various linear and non-linear statistical methods to find a correlation between surface segregation energies and elemental propertie... Operation of a PV Power Plant during Overpower Events Caused by the Cloud Enhancement Phenomenon
Markku Järvelä, Seppo Valkealahti
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud enhancement, operating voltage, overirradiance, PV cell temperature, PV generator
Partly cloudy days possess two characteristics that can significantly increase the photovoltaic (PV) generator power: the operating temperature of the PV panels can cool down during the shade periods, and the irradiance can be enhanced due to the cloud enhancement phenomenon. If an overirradiance event is preceded by a long shade period, the maximum power of a PV generator can occasionally be much higher than the nominal nameplate power. During the overpower events, the inverter is operating in power-limiting mode whereby the operating voltage is increased to decrease the power of the PV generator. We created a simulation model of a 31.9 kW PV generator and used 12 months of irradiance and PV panel temperature measurement data to analyze its operation. We analyzed the PV generator power during the overirradiance events and applied various static power limits to calculate the operating voltage ranges in case of power curtailment. During the observation period, the maximum power produced... [more]
Coordinated Excitation and Static Var Compensator Control with Delayed Feedback Measurements in SGIB Power Systems
Haris E. Psillakis, Antonio T. Alexandridis
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: nonlinear analysis, power system control, SGIB power systems, static var compensators, transient stability
In this paper, we present a nonlinear coordinated excitation and static var compensator (SVC) control for regulating the output voltage and improving the transient stability of a synchronous generator infinite bus (SGIB) power system. In the first stage, advanced nonlinear methods are applied to regulate the SVC susceptance in a manner that can potentially improve the overall transient performance and stability. However, as distant from the generator measurements are needed, time delays are expected in the control loop. This fact substantially complicates the whole design. Therefore, a novel design is proposed that uses backstepping methodologies and feedback linearization techniques suitably modified to take into account the delayed measurement feedback laws in order to implement both the excitation voltage and the SVC compensator input. A detailed and rigorous Lyapunov stability analysis reveals that if the time delays do not exceed some specific limits, then all closed-loop signals... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brain–machine interface, edge device, energy-aware design, field-programmable gate array, hardware acceleration, high-level synthesis, neural network
The prediction of a high-level cognitive function based on a proactive brain−machine interface (BMI) control edge device is an emerging technology for improving the quality of life for disabled people. However, maintaining the stability of multiunit neural recordings is made difficult by the nonstationary nature of neurons and can affect the overall performance of proactive BMI control. Thus, it requires regular recalibration to retrain a neural network decoder for proactive control. However, retraining may lead to changes in the network parameters, such as the network topology. In terms of the hardware implementation of the neural decoder for real-time and low-power processing, it takes time to modify or redesign the hardware accelerator. Consequently, handling the engineering change of the low-power hardware design requires substantial human resources and time. To address this design challenge, this work proposes AHEAD: an automatic holistic energy-aware design methodology for multil... [more]

Keywords: biocharing, bioenergy resource, calorific value, coconut wastes, pollutant emissions
Coconut husks with the shells attached are potential bioenergy resources for fuel-constrained communities in Ghana. In spite of their energy potential, coconut husks and shells are thrown away or burned raw resulting in poor sanitation and environmental pollution. This study focuses on quantifying the waste proportions, calorific values and pollutant emissions from the burning of raw uncharred and charred coconut wastes in Ghana. Fifty fresh coconuts were randomly sampled, fresh coconut waste samples were sun-dried up to 18 days, and a top-lit updraft biochar unit was used to produce biochar for the study. The heat contents of the coconut waste samples and emissions were determined. From the results, 62−65% of the whole coconut fruit can be generated as wastes. The calorific value of charred coconut wastes was 42% higher than the uncharred coconut wastes. PM2.5 and CO emissions were higher than the WHO 24 h air quality guidelines (AQG) value at 25 °C, 1 atmosphere, but the CO concentra... [more]

Keywords: electrical discharges, energy distribution, insulating liquids, optical radiation
This article presents the results of the analysis of energy distribution of optical radiation emitted by electrical discharges in insulating liquids, such as synthetic ester, natural ester, and mineral oil. The measurements of optical radiation were carried out on a system of needle−needle type electrodes and on a system for surface discharges, which were immersed in brand new insulating liquids. Optical radiation was recorded using optical spectrophotometry method. On the basis of the obtained results, potential possibilities of using the analysis of the energy distribution of optical radiation as an additional descriptor for the recognition of individual sources of electric discharges were indicated. The results can also be used in the design of various types of detectors, as well as high-voltage diagnostic systems and arc protection systems.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANSYS, fins, plate-fin heat exchanger, structural stability
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is one of the hydrocarbon fuels with the least carbon footprint having a rapidly rising global share in the prime energy market. LNG processing for transportation at longer distances works under cryogenic conditions, especially when used for liquefaction and gasification applications. The supply chain of the eco-environmental friendly hydrocarbon is heavily dependent on the processing plant used for liquefaction and subsequent re-gasification of the natural gas. Plate-fin heat exchangers are extensively used in the LNG industry for both re-gasification as well as liquefaction processes. The exchange of heat during the process of natural gas phase change involves plate-fin heat exchangers working under cryogenic low-temperature conditions. The heat exchangers are designed to have brazed joints that are most vulnerable to failure under these temperature conditions. One failure of such a joint can not only hinder the supply chain but also may result in fire and... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calcium looping, Carbon Dioxide Capture, coal-based power plant, desulphurization, Technoeconomic Analysis
The increase of capital investments and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs represents a current limitation to the diffusion of carbon capture systems for the clean combustion of fossil fuels. However, post-combustion systems, such as calcium looping (CaL), for CO2 capture from flue gas are the most attractive carbon capture systems since they can be installed at new plants and retrofitted into existing power plants. This work investigates the pros and cons of employing a calcium looping system for CO2 capture and also as a desulphurization unit. A preliminary techno-economic analysis was carried out comparing a base case consisting of a coal-based power plant of about 550MWe with a desulphurization unit (Case 1), the same plant but with a CaL system added for CO2 capture (Case 2), or the same plant but with a CaL system for simultaneous capture of CO2 and SO2 and the removal of the desulphurization unit (Case 3). Case 2 resulted in a 67% increase of capital investment with respect t... [more]

Keywords: A-MF-DFA method, asymmetry, carbon emissions market, greenhouse gas, informational efficiency
This study explores the degree and change of informational efficiency of the European Union (EU) carbon emission trading market using an asymmetric multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (A-MF-DFA) method, which allows asymmetry. For this purpose, we analysed the daily price series of the European Emissions Market, which is operated according to the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. This carbon market is the most active and has the largest trading volume. The data covers the period (from 4 August 2005 to 31 December 2019). The main results are summarised as follows. First, there is a multifractal feature in the price return movements of the EU carbon trading market, which behaves differently in the upward and downward periods of the market. Second, the informational efficiency of the carbon emission market has changed over time, with Phase I having the lowest informational efficiency and Phase III having the highest informational efficiency. These results indicate that info... [more]

Keywords: analysis, cyber–physical systems (CPS), framework, power systems, smart grid
The cyber−physical system (CPS) architecture provides a novel framework for analyzing and expanding research and innovation results that are essential in managing, controlling and operating complex, large scale, industrial systems under a holistic insight. Power systems constitute such characteristically large industrial structures. The main challenge in deploying a power system as a CPS lies on how to combine and incorporate multi-disciplinary, core, and advanced technologies into the specific for this case, social, environmental, economic and engineering aspects. In order to substantially contribute towards this target, in this paper, a specific CPS scheme that clearly describes how a dedicated cyber layer is deployed to manage and interact with comprehensive multiple physical layers, like those found in a large-scale modern power system architecture, is proposed. In particular, the measurement, communication, computation, control mechanisms, and tools installed at different hierarch... [more]
Vector Speed Regulation of an Asynchronous Motor Based on Improved First-Order Linear Active Disturbance Rejection Technology

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asynchronous motor, error differentiation, linear active disturbance rejection control, vector control
Asynchronous motors are widely used in industry and agriculture because of their simple structure, low cost, and easy maintenance. However, due to the coupling and uncertain factors of the actual operation of the motor, a traditional controller cannot achieve a satisfactory control effect. A linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC), featuring good robustness and adaptability, was proposed to improve the control efficiency of a nonlinear, uncertain plant. A linear extended state observer (LESO) is the core part of a L. The accuracy of the observation of state variables and unknown disturbances is related to the control effect of the controller. The performance of a traditional LESO is not high enough, and thus an error differential is introduced by analyzing the principle of LESO to improve its observation performance. The improved LADRC applies to the vector speed control of the induction motor. Additionally, low-speed and high-speed no-load starting, sudden load, electro... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, bioenergy, esterification, kinetic, microwave irradiation, noncatalytic reaction
This study developed a microwave-mediated noncatalytic esterification of oleic acid for producing ethyl biodiesel. The microwave irradiation process outperformed conventional heating methods for the reaction. A highest reaction conversion, 97.62%, was achieved by performing esterification with microwave irradiation at a microwave power of 150 W, 2:1 ethanol:oleic acid molar ratio, reaction time of 6 h, and temperature of 473 K. A second-order reaction model (R2 of up to 0.997) was established to describe esterification. The reaction rate constants were promoted with increasing microwave power and temperature. A strong linear relation of microwave power to pre-exponential factors was also established, and microwave power greatly influenced the reaction due to nonthermal effects. This study suggested that microwave-assisted noncatalytic esterification is an efficient approach for biodiesel synthesis.

Keywords: data filtering, lightGBM, Machine Learning, PV performance modelling, PV system
In photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy yield is one of the essential pieces of information to the stakeholders (grid operators, maintenance operators, financial units, etc.). The amount of energy produced by a photovoltaic system in a specific time period depends on the weather conditions, including snow and dust, the actual PV modules’ and inverters’ efficiency and balance-of-system losses. The energy yield can be estimated by using empirical models with accurate input data. However, most of the PV systems do not include on-site high-class measurement devices for irradiance and other weather conditions. For this reason, the use of reanalysis-based or satellite-based data is currently of significant interest in the PV community and combining the data with decomposition and transposition irradiance models, the actual Plane-of-Array operating conditions can be determined. In this paper, we are proposing an efficient and accurate approach for PV output energy modelling by combining a new da... [more]

Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, MIS Schottky barrier diodes, Mott–Schottky theory, nanoporous silicon, silver nanoparticles
The accurate determination of the electrical properties of photovoltaic devices is of utmost importance to predict and optimize their overall optoelectronic performance. For example, the minority carrier lifetime and the carrier diffusion length have a strong relationship with the carrier recombination rate. Additionally, parasitic resistances have an important effect on the fill factor of a solar cell. Within this context, the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) electrical characteristics of Si-based metal−insulator−semiconductor (MIS) Schottky barrier diodes with the basic structure Al/Si/TiO2/NiCr were studied, aiming at using them as photovoltaic devices. The basic diode structure was modified by adding nanostructured porous silicon (nanoPS) layers and by infiltrating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into the nanoPS layers, leading to Al/Si+nanoPS/TiO2/NiCr and Al/Si+nanoPS+AgNPs/TiO2/NiCr structures, respectively. The AC electrical properties were studied using a combinat... [more]

The electrodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are multicomponent systems and their electrochemical properties are influenced by each component, therefore the composition of electrodes should be properly balanced. At the beginning of lithium-ion battery research, most attention was paid to the nature, size, and morphology peculiarities of inorganic active components as the main components which determine the functional properties of electrode materials. Over the past decade, considerable attention has been paid to development of new binders, as the binders have shown great effect on the electrochemical performance of electrodes in LIBs. The study of new conductive binders, in particular water-based binders with enhanced electronic and ionic conductivity, has become a trend in the development of new electrode materials, especially the conversion/alloying-type anodes. This mini-review provides a summary on the progress of current research of the effects of binders on the electrochemical... [more]

Building energy savings and occupant thermal comfort are the main issues in building technology. As such, the development of energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems and the control strategies of HVAC systems are emerging as important topics in the HVAC industry. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems have efficient energy performance, so the use of VRF systems in buildings is increasing. However, most studies on VRF systems focus on improving mechanical efficiency, with few studies on energy-efficient control while satisfying the thermal comfort of occupants. The goal is to estimate the energy-saving potential of adjusting the temperature set-points and dead-band (range) in VRF air-conditioned building. To do so, we analyzed the influence of control strategies of a VRF system on human thermal comfort and energy consumption using a simulation method. The results showed that energy consumption can be reduced by 25.4% for predicted mean vote (PMV)-based... [more]
