Developing Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy for Advanced Hybrid System-II Electric Vehicles
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: equivalent consumption minimization strategy, hybrid electric vehicles, power-split hybrid
Compared with conventional vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have the advantage of high-energy conversion efficiency, which can have better fuel economy and lower emissions. The main issue of HEVs is how to develop an energy management strategy to achieve significantly better fuel efficiency. In this research, the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) was applied to optimize the performance of fuel consumption in the Advanced Hybrid System-II (AHS-II). Based on FTP-75 Test Procedure defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a backward simulation module was established. The baseline simulation module with the rule-based control strategy was validated with the original fuel consumption data. Then, the module with ECMS followed the same control rules of engine on/off and mode selection, and the fuel consumption of ECMS was compared with the simulation results of the baseline model. The fuel economy improvements of ECMS in urban, highway driving patte... [more]

Improved PSO: A Comparative Study in MPPT Algorithm for PV System Control under Partial Shading Conditions
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), photovoltaic (PV)
This paper deals with the implementation and analysis of a new maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control method, which is tested under variable climatic conditions. This new MPPT strategy has been created for photovoltaic systems based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The novel Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) algorithm is tested in several simulations which have been implemented in view of the various system responses such as: voltage, current, and power. A Numerical Pinch Analysis Methodology for Optimal Sizing of a Centralized Trigeneration System with Variable Energy Demands
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: batch process plants, Pinch Analysis, Total Site Heat Integration, trigeneration system, trigeneration system cascade analysis
The energy and power sectors are critical sectors, especially as energy demands rise every year. Increasing energy demand will lead to an increase in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Improving the thermal efficiency of conventional power systems is one way to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The previous study has developed a new methodology called Trigeneration System Cascade Analysis (TriGenSCA) to optimise the sizing of power, heating, and cooling in a trigeneration system for a Total Site system. However, the method only considered a single period on heating and cooling demands. In industrial applications, there are also batches, apart from continuous plants. The multi-period is added in the analysis to meet the time constraints in batch plants. This paper proposes the development of an optimal trigeneration system based on the Pinch Analysis (PA) methodology by minimizing cooling, heating, and power requirements, taking into account energy variations in the total s... Adaptive Damping Design of PMSG Integrated Power System with Virtual Synchronous Generator Control
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive damping control, LPV, PMSG, virtual synchronous generator
With the continuous development of wind power capacity, a large number of wind turbines connected by power electronic devices make the system inertia lower, which leads to the problem of system frequency stability degradation. The virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control can make wind turbines possess inertia and damping. However, the stochastic dynamic behavior of wind generation results in the stochastic changing of operating condition; this paper presents an adaptive subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) damping control method for the wind generation with VSG control. Firstly, the small signal model of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) with VSG is built, and the model of state space is derived and built. The active power of PMSG is selected as the variable parameter vector to establish a polytopic linear variable parameter system model. Then, based on the hybrid H2/H∞ control method, each vertex state feedback matrix is solved by linear matrix inequality, and a subsync... [more]

Torque Coordination Control of an Electro-Hydraulic Composite Brake System During Mode Switching Based on Braking Intention
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: braking intention, electric vehicles, electro-hydraulic braking, mode switching, torque coordinated control
The electro-hydraulic composite braking system of a pure electric vehicle can select different braking modes according to braking conditions. However, the differences in dynamic response characteristics between the motor braking system (MBS) and hydraulic braking system (HBS) cause total braking torque to fluctuate significantly during mode switching, resulting in jerking of the vehicle and affecting ride comfort. In this paper, torque coordination control during mode switching is studied for a four-wheel-drive pure electric vehicle with a dual motor. After the dynamic analysis of braking, a braking force distribution control strategy is developed based on the I-curve, and the boundary conditions of mode switching are determined. A novel combined pressure control algorithm, which contains a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) and fuzzy controller, is used to control the brake pressure of each wheel cylinder, to realize precise control of the hydraulic brake torque. Then, a novel tor... [more]

A Multi-Class Multi-Movement Vehicle Counting Framework for Traffic Analysis in Complex Areas Using CCTV Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computer vision, deep learning, intelligent transportation system, vehicle counting framework, vehicle detection and tracking
Traffic analysis using computer vision techniques is attracting more attention for the development of intelligent transportation systems. Consequently, counting traffic volume based on the CCTV system is one of the main applications. However, this issue is still a challenging task, especially in the case of complex areas that involve many vehicle movements. This study performs an investigation of how to improve video-based vehicle counting for traffic analysis. Specifically, we propose a comprehensive framework with multiple classes and movements for vehicle counting. In particular, we first adopt state-of-the-art deep learning methods for vehicle detection and tracking. Then, an appropriate trajectory approach for monitoring the movements of vehicles using distinguished regions tracking is presented in order to improve the performance of the counting. Regarding the experiment, we collect and pre-process the CCTV data at a complex intersection to evaluate our proposed framework. In par... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, first principle modelling, ground-state oxidation potentials, organic sensitizers, photocatalytic hydrogen production, solar energy devices, solar fuel devices
The prediction of ground-state redox potentials by quantum chemical methods has a prominent role in the rational design of novel organic photosensitizers both for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and photocatalytic systems for the production of H2. Indeed, the ground-state redox potential of the photosensitizers is one of the key parameters to identify the most promising candidates for such applications. Here, the ground-state redox potentials of 16 organic donor-π-acceptor D-π-A and donor-acceptor-π-acceptor D-A-π-A dyes having a medium to large size of the conjugated scaffold are evaluated, using the methods of the Density Functional Theory (DFT), in terms of free energy differences between their neutral and oxidized ground-state forms. These results are compared to the available experimental data and to the computed highest occupied molecular orbital energy −ε(HOMO) values as an approximation of ground-state redox potentials according to Koopmans’ theorem. A Comparison of Energy and Thermal Performance of Rooftop Greenhouses and Green Roofs in Mediterranean Climate: A Hygrothermal Assessment in WUFI
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: green roof, green systems, Rooftop greenhouse, two-dimensional hygrothermal simulation, urban local microclimate modelling
In urban areas, a considerable proportion of energy demand is allocated to buildings. Since rooftops constitute one-fourth of all urban surfaces, an increasing amount of attention is paid to achieving the most efficient shapes and component designs compatible with every climate and urban context, for rooftops of varying sizes. In this study, three types of rooftop technologies, namely insulated, green roof, and rooftop greenhouse, are evaluated for energy and thermal performance using computer simulations. Water surface exposure, absorption, and intrusion are the three important factors in the calculation of hygrothermal models that impact energy consumption and building envelope performance; however, a few studies are specifically focused on providing realistic results in multi-dimensional hygrothermal models and the assessment of the impact of moisture in roofing solutions. This paper aims at evaluating the performance of three different roofing technologies through a two-dimensional... [more]

Effects of Frequency and Temperature on Electric Field Mitigation Method via Protruding Substrate Combined with Applying Nonlinear FDC Layer in Wide Bandgap Power Modules
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric field, geometrical techniques, influence of frequency and temperature, nonlinear FDC layer, packaging, WBG power module
Our previous studies showed that geometrical techniques including (1) metal layer offset, (2) stacked substrate design and (3) protruding substrate, either individually or combined, cannot solve high electric field issues in high voltage high-density wide bandgap (WBG) power modules. Then, for the first time, we showed that a combination of the aforementioned geometrical methods and the application of a nonlinear field-dependent conductivity (FDC) layer could address the issue. Simulations were done under a 50 Hz sinusoidal AC voltage per IEC 61287-1. However, in practice, the insulation materials of the envisaged WBG power modules will be under square wave voltage pulses with a frequency of up to a few tens of kHz and temperatures up to a few hundred degrees. The relative permittivity and electrical conductivity of aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramic, silicone gel, and nonlinear FDC materials that were assumed to be constant in our previous studies, may be frequency- and temperature-depend... Flywheel Energy Storage and Dump Load to Control the Active Power Excess in a Wind Diesel Power System
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel generator, dump load, flywheel energy storage, isolated microgrid, power systems control, power systems simulation, wind turbine generator
Wind Diesel Power Systems (WDPS) are isolated microgrids which combine Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs) with Diesel Generators (DGs). The WDPS modelled in this article is composed of a DG, a WTG, consumer load, Dump Load (DL) and a Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS). In the Wind-Diesel (WD) mode both the DG and WTG supply power to the consumers. The WDPS is simulated in the WD mode in the case that the WTG produced power exceeds the load consumption. This WTG excess power case is simulated in the subcases of DL and FESS turned off, only-DL and only-FESS. Simulations for the DL and FESS-off case show that the WTG excess power leads to a continuous system frequency increase, so that the tripping of the WTG Circuit Breaker (CB) is required to guarantee the WDPS power supply continuity. Simulations for the only-DL/only-FESS cases show that commanding the DL/FESS to consume controlled power, so that the required DG power to balance the system active power is positive, enables the DE speed... Analyzing Actors’ Engagement in Sustainable Energy Planning at the Local Level in Ghana: An Empirical Study
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: actor analysis, decentralization, local government, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, socio-technical systems, sustainable energy planning
Actors play a crucial role in sustainable energy development yet interaction in different contexts is an area that has not received much scholarly attention. Sustainable energy transitions theories such as the Multi-Level Perspective, for instance, have been criticized for not describing precisely the nature of the interactions between actors and institutions within socio-technical systems. The goal of this study was to empirically examine local actors’ engagement and its impact on the planning and implementation of sustainable energy initiatives in the villages and remote areas in Ghana. Using the mixed methodology approach, interviews were performed, focus discussion groups were held, and archival data were collected, and social network modeling and case study analysis was performed. Our findings showed that sustainable energy development at the local level depends on an interplay between local government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), central government agencies, l... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fractal dimension, lacustrine, multidimensional scaling (MDS), pore characteristics, shale oil
Shale oil is hosted in nanopores of organic-rich shales, so pore characteristics are significant for shale oil accumulation. Here we analyzed pore characteristics of 39 lacustrine shale samples of the Late Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation (K2qn) in the Songliao Basin, which is one of the main shale oil resource basins in China, using field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and low-pressure nitrogen adsorption. We accomplished fractal analysis, correlation analysis using correlation matrix and multidimensional scaling (MDS), and prediction of fractal dimensions, which is the first time to predict pore fractal dimensions of shales. Interparticle pores are highly developed in K2qn. These shales have mesoporous nature and slit-shaped pores. Compared with the second and third members (K2qn2,3), the first member of the Qingshankou Formation (K2qn1) has a larger average pore diameter, much smaller surface area, fewer micropores, simpler pore structure and surface indicated by sm... Consensus Control for Reactive Power Sharing Using an Adaptive Virtual Impedance Approach
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive virtual impedance, hierarchical control, islanded microgrids, leader-followers consensus control, leaderless consensus control, mismatched feeder lines, reactive power sharing, triangle mesh communication topology
Reactive power sharing among distributed generators (DGs) in islanded microgrids (MGs) presents control challenges, particularly in the mismatched feeder line condition. Improved droop control methods independently struggle to resolve this issue and centralized secondary control methods exhibit a high risk of collapse for the entire MG system under any failure in the central control. Distributed secondary control methods have been recently proposed to mitigate the reactive power error evident in the presence of mismatched feeder lines. This paper details a mathematical model of an adaptive virtual impedance control that is based on both leaderless and leader-followers consensus controls with a novel triangle mesh communication topology to ensure accurate active and reactive power sharing. The approach balances an enhanced rate of convergence with the anticipated implementation cost. A MATLAB/Simulink model with six DG units validates the proposed control performance under three differe... [more]

Numerical Studies on Teeter Bed Separator for Particle Separation
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bed characteristics, numerical studies, settling behavior, teeter bed separator
Teeter Bed Separators (TBS) are liquid−solid fluidized beds that are widely used in separation of coarse particles in coal mining industry. The coal particles settle in the self-generating medium bed resulting in separation according to density. Due to the existence of self-generating medium beds, it is difficult to study the sedimentation of particles in TBS through experiments and detection methods. In the present research, a model was built to investigate the bed expansion characteristics with water velocity based on the Euler−Euler approach, and to investigate the settling of foreign particles through bed based on the Euler−Lagrange approach in TBS. Results show that the separation of in TBS should be carried out at low water velocity under the condition of stable fluidized bed. Large particles have a high slip velocity, and they are easily flowing through the bed into the light product leading to a mismatch. The importance of self-generating bed on separation of particle with narr... [more]

Improving Accessible Capacity Tracking at Low Ambient Temperatures for Range Estimation of Battery Electric Vehicles
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle, isothermal parameterisation, low temperature, model parameterisation, range anxiety, range estimation
Today’s market leading electric vehicles, driven on typical UK motorways, have real-world range estimation inaccuracy of up to 27%, at around 10 °C outside temperature. The inaccuracy worsens for city driving or lower outside temperature. The reliability of range estimation largely depends on the accuracy of the battery’s underlying state estimators, e.g., state-of-charge and state-of-energy. This is affected by accuracy of the models embedded in the battery management system. The performance of these models fundamentally depends on experimentally obtained parameterisation and validation data. These experiments are mostly performed within thermal chambers, which maintain pre-set temperatures using forced air convection. Although these setups claim to maintain isothermal test conditions, they rarely do so. In this paper, we show that this is potentially the root-cause for deterioration of range estimation at low temperatures. This is because, while such setups produce results comparable... [more]

Relative Free Energy Function and Structural Theory of Thermoeconomics
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: characteristic equation, cost conservation equation, costing assessment, deterioration temperature, exergy cost theory, exergy dual/primal, relative free energy, structural theory, thermoeconomic diagnosis, thermoeconomics
This paper explores the advantages of using relative free energy instead of exergy to build a mathematical theory of thermodynamic costs to diagnose malfunctions in thermal systems. This theory is based on the definition of a linearized characteristic equation that represents the physical behavior of each component. The physical structure of the system described by its energy interrelationships is called “primal”, and its derivatives are the costs and consumptions. The obtained costing structure is the mathematical “dual” of its primal. The theory explains why the F and P cost assessment rules and any other suggestion may (or may not be) rational under a given disaggregation scheme. A result of the theory is a new thermodynamic function, called the relative free energy, and a new parameter called deterioration temperature due to a component’s deterioration cause, characterized by a h-s thermodynamic trajectory describing the effects on the exiting stream. The relative free energy funct... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distorted signals, energy meters, measurement setup, total harmonic distortion
This paper presents a study on revenue active electrical energy meters. The huge installation along the distribution network of these devices made them a key element for energy billing, but also for monitoring the grid status. Hence, it is evident that the relevance of guaranteeing a trusty metering performance, and consequently a proper standardization, is needed. The operation of the meters is regulated by standards harmonized with the European Directive 2014/32/EU (known as MID). Still, and not infrequently, compliance to some legacy standards is declared on the device specifications. Thus, a brief comparison between the latest standards is presented. In particular, the focus was set on evaluating the potential impact of the harmonic disturbances on the energy meter accuracy, since they are omnipresent in the modern power networks. The evaluation has been carried out on three off-the-shelf class B meters by means of a new test procedure that considers realistic and quasi-realistic h... [more]

Comparison of Bimetallic Fe-Cu and Fe-Ca Oxygen Carriers for Biomass Gasification
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bimetallic oxygen carrier, Biomass, chemical looping, gasification, metal oxide
Two bimetallic Fe-Cu and Fe-Ca oxygen carriers were studied for chemical looping gasification (CLG) of biomass. The SEM results indicated that there was no obvious agglomeration on the bimetallic Fe-Cu oxygen carrier supported on Al2O3 and Fe-Ca oxygen carrier after five redox cycles while agglomeration occurred on CuO supported on Al2O3 due to the low melting point of CuO. The XRD results indicated the presence of copper-ferrite and calcium-ferrite phases in the bimetallic materials. The two bimetallic oxygen carriers can be re-oxidized with air to form a crystalline that is similar to the fresh materials. The Fe-Ca oxide became active at 360 °C which was lower than 380 °C for the Fe-Cu oxygen carrier. The high thermal stability and redox reactivity of bimetallic Fe-Cu and Fe-Ca oxygen carriers make the bimetallic oxygen carriers more suitable for recycling during CLG. The method for preparing Fe-Cu oxygen carriers had no significant impact on biomass conversion efficiency but had sig... [more]

Keywords: LHTES, micro-grid, packed-bed, phase change material (PCM), photovoltaic plant, thermal energy storage, thermocline
Currently, energy storage systems are considered a key solution when mismatch occurs between energy supply and demand, allowing a more efficient energy deployment and use. The present paper is focused on the study of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system based on a packed bed of encapsulated phase change material (PCM) of spherical shape, conceived as an auxiliary component of a micro-grid to be built in a Research Center located in southwestern Sardinia (Italy). The main purpose of this work was to perform numerical simulations for predicting the performance of the TES system, designed to store the surplus thermal energy produced during the weekend by a heat pump fed by a photovoltaic (PV) plant. The stored energy would then be utilized during the weekdays to integrate the air-conditioning system supply. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Francis turbine, hydraulic turbomachine, inverse design, numerical simulation, open-source software
The hydraulic design of Francis turbines and pump-turbines is an expensive project-specific engineering effort that typically involves a direct iterative exploration of the design space. An inverse design method for turbomachinery has been previously introduced in the literature, and several recent applications have demonstrated its advantages; however, only a commercial implementation of the method is currently available. In this work, an open-source implementation of the inverse design method is introduced. First, the governing equations in cylindrical and curvilinear coordinate systems are derived, consolidating the somewhat inconsistent formulations that are available in the literature. Then, a convergence analysis of the method is performed in order to characterize the behavior of the discretization error and deduce the mesh resolution requirements. A validation of the method output with respect to high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations is then presented; it is dem... [more]

Optimizing Predictor Variables in Artificial Neural Networks When Forecasting Raw Material Prices for Energy Production
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: artificial neural network, Coal, coking coal, crude oil, lagged variable size, Natural Gas, predictor variable, price forecasting, raw material, rolling window
This paper applies a heuristic approach to optimize the predictor variables in artificial neural networks when forecasting raw material prices for energy production (coking coal, natural gas, crude oil and coal) to achieve a better forecast. Two goals are (1) to determine the optimum number of time-delayed terms or past values forming the lagged variables and (2) to improve the forecast accuracy by adding intrinsic signals to the lagged variables. The conclusions clearly are in opposition to the actual scientific literature: when addressing the lagged variable size, the results do not confirm relationships among their size, representativeness and estimation accuracy. It is also possible to verify an important effect of the results on the lagged variable size. Finally, adding the order in the time series of the lagged variables to form the predictor variables improves the forecast accuracy in most cases.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: glass molding, micro lens array, surface roughness, transcription effect, ultrasonic polishing
The micro lens array (MLA) has played an important role in optical systems for the past few years, and the precision of pressing dies has dominated the quality of MLAs in glass molding. Few studies have covered the transcription effects on surface roughness of pressing dies for this technology. Therefore, this research utilized pressing dies to produce a sine-wave lens array on glass molding, to transform the Gauss-distributed spotlight into a uniform straight one and then characterize the transcription effects of these lenses. Pressing dies with a sine-wave shape were firstly cut by wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM), and then ultrasonic polishing using diamond abrasives was applied to finish the sine-wave surface with an original roughness of 0.2 μm Ra. Next, the sine-wave lens arrays were pressed by glass molding at the appropriate pressure and temperature, before evaluating the transcription effects of transforming the Gauss-distributed spotlight into a uniform straight one... Subject: Other
Keywords: electric field, heat flux method, laminar burning velocity, plasma assisted combustion, pulsed microwave
Laminar burning velocity of lean methane/air flames exposed to pulsed microwave irradiation is determined experimentally as part of an effort to accurately quantify the enhancement resulting from exposure of the flame to pulsed microwaves. The experimental setup consists of a heat flux burner mounted in a microwave cavity, where the microwave has an average power of up to 250 W at an E-field in the range of 350−380 kV/m. Laminar burning velocities for the investigated methane/air flames increase from 1.8 to 12.7% when exposed to microwaves. The magnitude of the enhancement is dependent on pulse sequence (duration and frequency) and the strength of the electric field. From the investigated pulse sequences, and at a constant E-field and average power, the largest effect on the flame is obtained for the longest pulse, namely 50 μs. The results presented in this work are, to the knowledge of the authors, the first direct determination of laminar burning velocity on a laminar stretch-free f... [more]

Keywords: Distillation, evaporator, mass streams, mass transfer, non-equimolarity, velocity profiles
In modern chemical and oil refining complexes, separation processes are among the most popular and energy-intensive. Installations for their implementation should be equipped with nodes for creating vapor (evaporators) and liquid (deflegmators) irrigation. Evaporators of any type (film, thermosiphon, gas lift, cubic) belong to this class of devices. For example, in cubic evaporators, the gas flow is completely formed from flux bubbles that originate on the heat-conducting surface and float in the volume of the cubic liquid located in the apparatus. Due to the accompanying mass exchange, the bubbles are enriched with volatile components during ascent and noticeably increase in volume, and the growth of the bubble is determined, among other things, by the total flow. At the same time, in real bubbling-type equipment, the total mass transfer surface exceeds the cross-section of the device itself by more than two orders of magnitude.
