March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agriculture, Chinese cabbage, efficiency, greenhouse gases, slow release fertilizers
Optimization of plant fertilization is an important element of all quality systems in primary production, such as Integrated Production, GLOBAL G.A.P. (Good Agriculture Practice) or SAI (Sustainable Agriculture Initiative). Fertilization is the most important element of agricultural treatments, affecting the quantity and quality of crops. The aim of the study was to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the cultivation of Chinese cabbage, depending on the technological variant. The factor modifying the production technology was the use of fertilizers with a slow release of nutrients. One tonne of marketable Chinese cabbage crop was selected as the functional unit. To achieve the research goal, a strict field experiment was carried out. Calculation of the total amount of GHG emitted from the crop was made in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. The system boundaries included the production and use of fertilizers and pesticides, energy consumption for agricultural practices and th... [more]

Keywords: AC loss, high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable, tri-axial HTS cable
Currently, various types of superconducting power cables are being developed worldwide, and research and development of a tri-axial high-temperature superconducting (HTS) power cable are underway. The tri-axial HTS power cable reduces the amount of HTS wire due to its multilayer structure, has high current characteristics, and has less loss than other superconducting cables. However, since the radii of each phase are different, magnetic coupling makes it difficult to measure power loss and analyze performance. This paper presents the results of the design and performance analysis of a tri-axial HTS power cable. A prototype tri-axial HTS power cable was designed with a rated power of 60 MVA, a rated voltage of 23 kV and a length of 6 m, and was tested by cooling to 77 K with liquid nitrogen. We analyzed the performance of the tri-axial HTS power cable in normal conditions through a finite element method (FEM) simulation and experiment. The alternating current (AC) loss of the tri-axial... [more]
On Obtaining Energy-Optimal Trajectories for Landing of UAVs

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy, landing, Optimization, unmanned aerial vehicle
The optimization issues connected to a landing task of an unmanned aerial vehicle are discussed in the paper, based on a model of a mini-class drone. Three landing scenarios are considered, including minimum-time landing, landing with minimum energy consumption, and planned landing. With the use of classical dynamic programming techniques, including the minimum principle of Pontryagin, as well as the calculus of variations, the optimal altitude reference trajectories are found, to form the altitude control system in such a way as to mimic the profile of the reference trajectory by the actual altitude of the UAV. The simulation results conducted with the use of the Simulink Support Package for Parrot Minidrones verify the correctness and effectiveness of the method, and open the research directions for further analysis, especially to tune altitude controller in a way, as to track the reference profile. Up to this point, optimization tasks considered in the literature, with respect to th... [more]

Guokai Zhao, Yaoqing Hu, Peihua Jin
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyclic stress, cyclic temperature, energy dissipation, granite, mechanical properties
This paper investigates the variation of mechanical properties of granite during temperature and stress cycling, which is an important part of evaluating the long-term thermal and mechanical stability of thermal energy storage. Cyclic temperature and loading tests were conducted where the upper limit of cyclic temperature was 100−600 °C, and the upper stress limits were 70% and 85% of the average uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) at the corresponding temperature. The response of stress−strain characteristics of the granite samples to changes in temperature, and cyclic load upper limit, while the number of temperature and loading cycles was comprehensively analyzed. The results show that the temperature and stress cycles have significant effects on the mechanical properties of granite (i.e., stress−strain curve, strength, elastic modulus, and deformation). The elastic modulus of the sample during loading increases gradually. The strain corresponding to the upper loads of the granite s... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bilayer, CuSCN, interface, poly(3-hexylthiophene), stability
In the search for improvements in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), several different aspects are currently being addressed, including an increase in the stability and a reduction in the hysteresis. Both are mainly achieved by improving the cell structure, employing new materials or novel cell arrangements. We introduce a hysteresis-free low-temperature planar PSC, composed of a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)/CuSCN bilayer as a hole transport layer (HTL) and a mixed cation perovskite absorber. Proper adjustment of the precursor concentration and thickness of the HTL led to a homogeneous and dense HTL on the perovskite layer. This strategy not only eliminated the hysteresis of the photocurrent, but also permitted power conversion efficiencies exceeding 15.3%. The P3HT/CuSCN bilayer strategy markedly improved the life span and stability of the non-encapsulated PSCs under atmospheric conditions and accelerated thermal stress. The device retained more than 80% of its initial efficiency after 1... [more]

Ehsan Harirchian, Tom Lahmer, Shahla Rasulzade
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, earthquake damage, Machine Learning, seismic vulnerability
The latest earthquakes have proven that several existing buildings, particularly in developing countries, are not secured from damages of earthquake. A variety of statistical and machine-learning approaches have been proposed to identify vulnerable buildings for the prioritization of retrofitting. The present work aims to investigate earthquake susceptibility through the combination of six building performance variables that can be used to obtain an optimal prediction of the damage state of reinforced concrete buildings using artificial neural network (ANN). In this regard, a multi-layer perceptron network is trained and optimized using a database of 484 damaged buildings from the Düzce earthquake in Turkey. The results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the selected ANN approach to classify concrete structural damage that can be used as a preliminary assessment technique to identify vulnerable buildings in disaster risk-management programs.

Keywords: beer, brewers spent grain, hydrochars, hydrothermal carbonization, pyrolysis
Steady consumption of beer results in a steady output of residues, i.e., brewer’s spent grain (BSG). Its valorization, using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) seems sensible. However, a significant knowledge gap regarding the variability of this residue and its influence on the valorization process and its potential use in biorefineries exists. This study attempted to fill this gap by characterization of BSG in conjunction with the main product (beer), taking into accounts details of the brewing process. Moreover, different methods to assess the performance of HTC were investigated. Overall, the differences in terms of the fuel properties of both types of spent grain were much less stark, in comparison to the differences between the respective beers. The use of HTC as a pretreatment of BSG for subsequent use as a biorefinery feedstock can be considered beneficial. HTC was helpful in uniformization and improvement of the fuel properties. A significant decrease in the oxygen content and O... [more]

Keywords: adaptive system, torsional vibration, two-mass system, unscented Kalman filter
This paper presents an application of an Unscented- and a Fuzzy Unscented- Kalman Filter (UKF and FUKF) to the estimation of mechanical state variables and parameters in a drive system with an elastic connection. The cascade control structure incorporating an IP controller supported by two additional feedbacks and suitable adaptation mechanism is investigated in this study. The coefficients of the control structure are retuned on the basis of the value of mechanical parameters estimated by filter. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches (classical and fuzzy) is researched through simulation and experimental tests.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lithium battery, parameter identification, resistance capacitance time constant, Thevenin model
An accurate estimation of the state of charge for lithium battery depends on an accurate identification of the battery model parameters. In order to identify the polarization resistance and polarization capacitance in a Thevenin equivalent circuit model of lithium battery, the discharge and shelved states of a Thevenin circuit model were analyzed in this paper, together with the basic reasons for the difference in the resistance capacitance time constant and the accurate characterization of the resistance capacitance time constant in detail. The exact mathematical expression of the working characteristics of the circuit in two states were deduced thereafter. Moreover, based on the data of various working conditions, the parameters of the Thevenin circuit model through hybrid pulse power characterization experiment was identified, the simulation model was built, and a performance analysis was carried out. The experiments showed that the accuracy of the Thevenin circuit model can become... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging stations (CSs), electric vehicles (EVs), highway, Optimization, type of charging station
Electric vehicles (EVs), which have become a fundamental part of the automotive industry, were developed as part of concerted worldwide efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels due to their devastating effects on the environment. The aim of this study was to analyse a complete trip using an EV from Toronto to Ottawa (Canada) along Ontario’s Highway 401, considering that use of conventional vehicles powered by petrol or diesel allow one to make this trip without stops; using EVs, it is necessary to recharge the vehicle. For this purpose, an algorithm was developed for optimizing recharging stops during a complete trip. In particular, the simulations analysed the number of stops and specifically where it is possible to recharge taking into account the actual charging stations (CSs) located along the trip and the time of recharge during the stops as a function of the state of charge (SoC) of the vehicle. Using this approach, it was possible to evaluate the suitable coverage of the CSs... [more]
Assessing and Comparing Short Term Load Forecasting Performance

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost analysis, performance criteria, power systems, short term load forecasting
When identifying and comparing forecasting models, there may be a risk that poorly selected criteria could lead to wrong conclusions. Thus, it is important to know how sensitive the results are to the selection of criteria. This contribution aims to study the sensitivity of the identification and comparison results to the choice of criteria. It compares typically applied criteria for tuning and performance assessment of load forecasting methods with estimated costs caused by the forecasting errors. The focus is on short-term forecasting of the loads of energy systems. The estimated costs comprise electricity market costs and network costs. We estimate the electricity market costs by assuming that the forecasting errors cause balancing errors and consequently balancing costs to the market actors. The forecasting errors cause network costs by overloading network components thus increasing losses and reducing the component lifetime or alternatively increase operational margins to avoid th... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bioenergy, energy demand, energy system, energy transition, renewable energy potentials
The transition towards a reliable, sustainable, low-carbon energy system is a major challenge of the 21st century. Due to the lower energy density of many renewable energy sources, a future system is expected to be more decentralized, leading to significant changes at the regional scale. This study analyzes the feasibility of the energy transition in the Swiss canton of Aargau as an illustrative example and explores different strategies to satisfy the local demand for electricity, heat, and fuel by 2035. In particular, we assess the potential contribution of biomass. Four scenarios demonstrate what energy demand proportion could be covered by bioenergy if different priorities were given to the provision of heat, electricity, and fuel. The impact of improved conversion technologies is also considered. The results show that the sustainably available renewable energy sources in canton Aargau will probably not be sufficient to cover its forecasted energy demand in 2035, neither with presen... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: EIA, refracturing, scaling EUR, unconventional, USGS
A recent study by the Wall Street Journal reveals that the hydrofractured horizontal wells in shales have been producing less than the industrial forecasts with the empirical hyperbolic decline curve analysis (DCA). As an alternative to DCA, we introduce a simple, fast and accurate method of estimating ultimate recovery in oil shales. We adopt a physics-based scaling approach to analyze oil rates and ultimate recovery from 14,888 active horizontal oil wells in the Bakken shale. To predict the Estimated Ultimate Recovery (EUR), we collapse production records from individual horizontal shale oil wells onto two segments of a master curve: (1) We find that cumulative oil production from 4845 wells is still growing linearly with the square root of time; and (2) 6401 wells are already in exponential decline after approximately seven years on production. In addition, 2363 wells have discontinuous production records, because of refracturing or changes in downhole flowing pressure, and are matc... [more]

Keywords: cluster analysis, data mining, distributed generation, electrical power network, global power quality index, mining industry, power quality
This paper presents the idea of a combined analysis of long-term power quality data using cluster analysis (CA) and global power quality indices (GPQIs). The aim of the proposed method is to obtain a solution for the automatic identification and assessment of different power quality condition levels that may be caused by different working conditions of an observed electrical power network (EPN). CA is used for identifying the period when the power quality data represents a different level. GPQIs are proposed to calculate a simplified assessment of the power quality condition of the data collected using CA. Two proposed global power quality indices have been introduced for this purpose, one for 10-min aggregated data and the other for events—the aggregated data index (ADI) and the flagged data index (FDI), respectively. In order to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed method, several investigations were performed, using real measurements in an electrical power ne... [more]
Regional Sustainable Development with Environmental Performance: Measuring Growth Indexes on Chinese Provinces

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: DEA, economic development, pollution prevention, Sustainability
The rapid economic growth of China in the past decades has been accompanied by serious environmental problems. In the country, both economic development and environmental pollution show a geographically uneven pattern, with some regions displaying significantly better performance than others in economic and/or environmental performance. To understand the regional pattern of economic and environmental performance, this article analyzes sustainable development at the Chinese provincial level. Three sustainability indices are defined and computed by combining economic and environmental factors based on data envelopment analysis. The three indices correspond to the concepts of natural disposability, managerial disposability and null-joint relationship, respectively. Natural (managerial) disposability prioritizes economic (environmental) outcome in measuring sustainability. Furthermore, the assumption of a null-joint relationship implies that undesirable outputs are by-products of desirable... [more]

Keywords: energy transformation, fuzzy control, model tests, towing tank, Wave Energy, wave generation, wave maker
This paper presents the results of research related to the transformation of electrical energy into potential and kinetic energy of waves generated on the water surface. The waves are generated to model the environmental conditions for the needs of the model tests. The model tests are performed on model-scale objects to predict the features of full-scale maritime objects. It is done to improve human safety and the survivability of constructions. Electrical energy is transformed into the energy of the water waves using a wave maker. The wave maker considered is a facility with an electrohydraulic drive and an actuator submerged into the water. The actuator movement results in the waves being mechanically-generated in accordance with the wave maker theory. The study aimed to investigate the advantage of the newly implemented fuzzy-logic controller over the hitherto cascading proportional-integral controllers of the wave maker actuator. The research was focused on experimental investigati... [more]
Acoustic Modeling and Vibration Characteristics of Supersonic Inlet Buzz

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic modeling, damping, oscillation amplitude, supersonic inlet buzz
The buzz phenomenon of a typical supersonic inlet is analyzed on the basis of numerical simulations and duct acoustic theory. Considering that the choked inlet could be treated as a duct with one end closed, a one-dimensional (1D) mathematical model based on the duct acoustic theory is proposed to describe the periodic pressure oscillation of the little buzz and the big buzz. The results of the acoustic model agree well with that of the numerical simulations and the experimental data. It could verify that the dominated oscillation patterns of the little buzz and the big buzz are closely related to the first and second resonant mode of the standing wave, respectively. The discrepancies between the numerical simulation and the ideal acoustic model might be attributed to the viscous damping in the fluid oscillation system. In order to explore the damping, a small perturbation jet is introduced to trigger the resonance of the buzz system and the nonlinear amplification effect of resonance... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: asphalt production, data collection, eco-profile, emissions, energy consumption
The development of the road construction sector determines the consequences on consumption of non-renewable resources, energy expenditure and environmental pollution. Recent sustainability issues have highlighted the importance of efficient design and quality-oriented techniques in this sector, due to the huge amount of materials involved in construction and maintenance activities. Thus, it is necessary to properly quantify the environmental impacts of asphalt mixtures used for pavement construction, considering the whole life cycle of the products. Life cycle assessment (LCA) represents the most appropriate methodological framework for assessing the environmental burdens of a product, from raw material acquisition to final disposal. A common problem for LCA is the lack of primary data useful to calculate the product eco-profile, for a specific production process. In this context, there is generally limited reliable and accurate data regarding the asphalt plant production phase, which... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: experimental modal analysis, finite element model, homogenous isotropic material, lithium-ion cell, prismatic battery module, structural dynamics
The battery pack is the core component of a new energy vehicle (NEV), and reducing the impact of vibration induced resonance from the ground is a prerequisite for the safety of an NEV. For a high-performance battery pack design, a clear understanding of the structural dynamics of the key part of battery pack, such as the battery module, is of great significance. Additionally, a proper computational model for simulations of battery module also plays a key role in correctly predicting the dynamic response of battery packs. In this paper, an experimental modal analysis (EMA) was performed on a typical commercial battery module, composed of twelve 37Ah lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) prismatic cells, to obtain modal parameters such as mode shapes and natural frequencies. Additionally, three modeling methods for a prismatic battery module were established for the simulation modal analysis. The method of simplifying the prismatic cell to homogenous isotropic material had a better... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: data interpretation, deep belief network, integrated interpretation model, well testing
The interpretation of well-testing data is a key means of decision-making support for oil and gas field development. However, conventional processing methods have many problems, such as the stochastic nature of the data, feature redundancies, the randomness of the initial weights or thresholds, and fluctuations in the generalization ability with slight changes in the network parameters. These result in a poor ability to characterize data features and a low generalization ability of the interpretation models. We propose a new integrated well-testing interpretation model based on a multi-feature extraction method and deep mutual information classifiers (MFE-DMIC). This model can avoid the low model classification accuracy caused by the simple training structures, lacking of redundancy elimination, and the non-optimal classifier configuration parameters. First, we obtained the initial features according to four classical feature extraction methods. Then, we eliminated feature redundancies... [more]

Required functions of a microgrid become divers because there are many possible configurations that depend on the location. In order to effectively implement the microgrid system, which consists of a microgrid controller and components with distributed energy resources (DERs), thorough tests should be run to validate controller operation for possible operating conditions. Power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) simulation is a validation method that allows different configurations and yields reliable results. However, PHIL configuration for testing the microgrid controller that can evaluate the communication between a microgrid controller and components as well as the power interaction among microgrid components has not been discussed. Additionally, the difference of the power rating of microgrid components between the deployment site and the test lab needs to be adjusted. In this paper, we configured the PHIL environment, which integrates various equipment in the laboratory with a digital r... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate policy, coal phase-out, electricity modeling, energiewende, energy policy, energy transition, Germany
The political discussion to reduce the carbon footprint of Germany’s electricity sector, focusing on coal, is intensifying. In this paper, we develop scenarios for phasing out lignite and hard coal power plants in Germany prior to the end of their technical lifespan (“coal-exit”). Our analysis bases upon two coal-exit instruments, the retirement of coal generation capacities and the limiting of how much aged coal power plants with high carbon intensity can be used within a year. Results show that phasing out coal in Germany would have a considerable impact on Central European electricity markets, in terms of decarbonization efforts and electricity trade. An ambitious coal-exit could avert foreseeable shortcomings in Germany’s climate performance in the short-run and release additional carbon savings, thus compensating for potential shortfalls in other energy-intensive sectors by 2030. Limited emissions in the range of 27% would be shifted to neighboring countries. However, tremendous p... [more]

A variety of greenhouse gas reduction scenarios have been proposed around the world to ensure sustainable developments and strengthen the global response to the climate change. To cope with this, it is urgently needed to reduce the amount of energy used for the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigerating (HVAC&R) systems in large buildings. This study discusses the reduction of cooling energy in large office buildings through the minimization of changes in components and equipment, such as heat source equipment and pumps, changes in the layout and operating methods of chilled water circulation pumps, and changes in the temperatures of chilled and condenser water. To do this, this study targeted an entire cooling system consisting of a hydronic system, a chiller, and a cooling tower, and conducted a quantitative analysis of the energy consumption and of the reduction achieved through a change in the pumping system type in the cooling system and a change in the Korean stand... Keywords: electricity theft detection, K-means cluster, nontechnical losses, random forest, smart grid, synthetic minority oversampling technique
Effective detection of electricity theft is essential to maintain power system reliability. With the development of smart grids, traditional electricity theft detection technologies have become ineffective to deal with the increasingly complex data on the users’ side. To improve the auditing efficiency of grid enterprises, a new electricity theft detection method based on improved synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) and improve random forest (RF) method is proposed in this paper. The data of normal and electricity theft users were classified as positive data (PD) and negative data (ND), respectively. In practice, the number of ND was far less than PD, which made the dataset composed of these two types of data become unbalanced. An improved SOMTE based on K-means clustering algorithm (K-SMOTE) was firstly presented to balance the dataset. The cluster center of ND was determined by K-means method. Then, the ND were interpolated by SMOTE on the basis of the cluster center to... [more]
