Improved Interface Circuit for Enhancing the Power Output of a Vibration-Threshold-Triggered Piezoelectric Energy Harvester
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: equivalent circuit, impedance matching, interface circuit, vibration-threshold-triggered energy harvester
The vibration-threshold-triggered piezoelectric energy harvester is a new type of piezoelectric energy harvester with a two-stage structure, which can generate electricity in a low frequency environment and recognize vibration intensity at the same time. In this study, a theoretical model of a vibration-threshold-triggered energy harvester was examined, and an equivalent circuit model of the energy harvester was obtained. Then, an interface circuit was proposed that can significantly improve the output power of the energy harvester. The interface circuit achieved impedance matching with the piezoelectric material to maximize the energy collected from the energy harvester. First, we calculated and analyzed the impedance characteristics of the energy harvester, based on the equivalent circuit model. It was found that because the piezoelectric material is in resonance as the energy harvester is in operation, the corresponding impedance is almost resistance. Therefore, a resistance-matchin... Research on Injection-Production Capability and Seepage Characteristics of Multi-Cycle Operation of Underground Gas Storage in Gas Field—Case Study of the Wen 23 Gas Storage
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: gas recovery, gas saturation, injection-production flow, physical simulation, reservoir heterogeneous, underground gas storage (UGS) in gas field
With the increasing energy demands of current modern society, underground gas storage (UGS) in gas fields is the most popular type of UGS used to meet the seasonal variation of gas consumption. However, compared with gas fields, UGS in gas fields has the characteristics of periodic high-speed injection and production of exploitation modes and operation rules, which causes the rules of gas-water seepage and utilization of reserves to be more particular and complicated. In this paper, based on Wen 23 gas storage, the rules of multicycle injection and production flow and the utilization of UGS pore volume were investigated. The experimental results showed that variation in porosity and permeability caused by injection and production pressure changes in Wen 23 gas storage can be neglected. The pore volume of gas storage and the degree of gas recovery increased gradually in the pre-UGS gas zone, which was higher than that of reservoirs. In the initial stage of UGS operation, the pore volume... [more]

Distributed Resilient Voltage and Reactive Power Control for Islanded Microgrids under False Data Injection Attacks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: false data injection attacks, microgrids, reactive power sharing, resilience, trust, voltage restoration
This paper addresses the problem of voltage and reactive power control of inverter-based distributed generations (DGs) in an islanded microgrid subject to False Data Injection (FDI) attacks. To implement average voltage restoration and reactive power sharing, a two-layer distributed secondary control framework employing a multiagent system (MAS)-based dynamic consensus protocol is proposed. While communication network facilitates distributed control scheme, it leads to vulnerability of microgrids to malicious cyber-attacks. The adverse effects of FDI attack on the secondary controller are analyzed, and the necessary and sufficient conditions to model stealthy attack and probing attack are discussed in detail. A trust-based resilient control strategy is developed to resist the impacts of FDI attack. Based on the forward-backward consistency criterion, the self-monitoring and neighbor-monitoring mechanisms are developed to detect the misbehaving DGs. A group decision-making mechanism is... [more]

Comparative Analysis of BIPV Solutions to Define Energy and Cost-Effectiveness in a Case Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: BIPV, building skin, cost-effectiveness, life-cycle cost
The built environment remains a strategic research and innovation domain in view of the goal of full decarbonization. The priority is the retrofitting of existing buildings as zero-emission to improve their energy efficiency with renewable energy technologies pulling the market with cost-effective strategies. From the first age of photovoltaics (PV) mainly integrated in solar roofs, we rapidly moved towards complete active building skins where all the architectural surfaces are photoactive (Building Integrated Photovoltaics - BIPV). This change of paradigm, where PV replaces a conventional building material, shifted the attention to relate construction choices with energy and cost effectiveness. However, systematic investigations which put into action a cross-disciplinary approach between construction, economic and energy related domains is still missing. This paper provides the detailed assessment of a real multifamily building, taking into account retrofit scenarios for making active... [more]

Influence of Solar Position Calculation Methods Applied to Horizontal Single-Axis Solar Trackers on Energy Generation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: photovoltaic systems, solar position calculation algorithms, solar trackers
Photovoltaic systems have been explored as a solution to meet the growing demand for electricity from a clean and renewable source. However, the low energy conversion efficiency of photovoltaic panels is one of the critical factors that hinder the competitiveness of this energy source concerning the others. An effective way to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic systems is by using solar trackers. The tracking strategy most used in photovoltaic plants employs algorithms to calculate the Sun position. This work presents energy generation estimation applying six algorithms in horizontal single-axis solar tracking: the Solar Position Algorithm (SPA) and Grena 1−5 algorithms. The aim is to evaluate the influence of these algorithms on energy generation. For all simulated locations, comparing to an ideal scenario, the SPA presented the best energy generation results. However, the other algorithms showed negligible differences between themselves, which allows us to conclude that any of th... [more]

Influence of Pore Structure and Solid Bitumen on the Development of Deep Carbonate Gas Reservoirs: A Case Study of the Longwangmiao Reservoir in Gaoshiti−Longnusi Area, Sichuan Basin, SW China
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate gas reservoir, gas production, gas production rate, pore structure, recovery, solid bitumen
A variable sedimentary environment and accumulation process leads to a complex pore structure in deep carbonate gas reservoirs, and the physical properties are quite different between layers. Moreover, some pores and throats are filled with solid bitumen (SB), which not only interferes with reservoir analysis, but also affects efficient development. However, previous studies on SB mainly focused on the accumulation process and reservoir analysis, and there are few reports about the influence on development. In this paper, through scanning electron microscope analysis, SB extraction, gas flow experiments and depletion experiments, and a similar transformation between experimental results and reservoir production, the production characteristics of carbonate gas reservoirs with different pore structures were studied, and the influence of SB on pore structure, reservoir analysis and development were systematically analyzed. The results show that permeability is one of the key factors affec... [more]

Decision Tree for Online Voltage Stability Margin Assessment Using C4.5 and Relief-F Algorithms
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: decision tree (DT), Machine Learning, voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment
In practical power system operation, knowing the voltage stability limits of the system is important. This paper proposes using a decision tree (DT) to extract guidelines through offline study results for assessing system voltage stability status online. Firstly, a sample set of DTs is determined offline by active power injection and bus voltage magnitude (P-V) curve analysis. Secondly, participation factor (PF) analysis and the Relief-F algorithm are used successively for attribute selection, which takes both the physical significance and the classification capabilities into consideration. Finally, the C4.5 algorithm is used to build the DT because it is more suitable for handling continuous variables. A practical power system is implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed online voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment framework. Study results indicate that the operating guidelines extracted from the DT can help power system operators assess real time VSM effectively.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced exergoeconomic analysis, cost effectiveness, H2 fuel, performance assessment, sustainability analysis, turbojet engine
This research put forth exergy-based economic and sustainability analyses of a (J85-GE-5H) military turbojet engine (TJE). Firstly, sustainability, conventional exergoeconomic and advanced exergoeconomic cost analyses were executed utilizing kerosene fuel according to real engine working circumstances. The engine was likewise investigated parametrically, considering H2 fuel utilization. The sustainable economic analysis assessment of the TJE was finally actualized by comparing the acquired outcomes for both fuels. The entire engine’s unit exergy cost of product (cPr) with kerosene was determined 76.45 $/GJ for the military (MIL) process mode (PM), whereas it was computed 94.97 $/GJ for the afterburner (AB) PM. Given the use of H2, the cPr increased to 179 and 288 $/GJ for the aforementioned two modes, seriatim. While the sustainability cost index (SCI) values were obtained 52.86 and 78.84 $/GJ for the MIL and AB PM, seriatim, they became 128 and 244 $/GJ when considering H2. Consequent... [more]

Research on Groove Method to Suppress Stall in Pump Turbine
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: head hump, pressure pulsation, pump turbine, stall, stall suppression
The pump turbine is prone to stall when running at part-load operation. Stalls would cause a hump-like head characteristic curve, low-frequency high-amplitude pressure pulsation, and surge or resonance in the system. There is a lack of efficient methods for pump turbine stall suppression. The traditional blade hydrodynamic optimization method has limited effect and would influence the other characteristics. As the essence of stall is flow separation, forming a severe backflow vortex, a “Groove Method” is put forward and employed to suppress stall in a pump turbine with the full consideration of the mechanical structure, flow field, and pressure field. Both experiments and calculations are carried out to test the effectiveness of this new method. Furthermore, its deep mechanisms are revealed. This method can weaken the head hump to a certain extent and reduce the pressure pulse amplitude induced by stall. Meanwhile, the performance at the design operating point is not disturbed much.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
The alcohols ethanol and 1-butanol are interesting options as blending components for renewable fuels. We studied whether it is possible to mix these alcohols with a little refined material, rapeseed oil, to obtain stable fuel samples. At room temperature, the stable samples consisted of rapeseed oil blended with butanol at 5 vol-%, 10 vol-%, 20 vol-%, 30 vol-% and one sample of rapeseed oil with 5 vol-% of ethanol. The samples’ fuel properties analysed were kinematic viscosity (at 40 °C), density (at 15 °C) and surface tension. Cold filter plugging point was measured for rapeseed oil with 20 vol-% and 30 vol-% of butanol. Stability of butanol or ethanol and rapeseed oil blends can be achieved at the studied volumes. The density of neat rapeseed oil and all the alcohol−rapeseed oil blends met the requirements set for residual marine fuels. The 30 vol-% butanol−rapeseed oil blend met the requirements for distillate marine oil for density, and almost for kinematic viscosity. The blends a... [more]

Recently, the interest around the Blockchain concept has grown faster and, as a consequence, several studies about the possibility of exploiting such technology in different application domains have been conducted. Most of these studies highlighted the benefits that the use of the blockchain could bring in those contexts where integrity and authenticity of the data are important, e.g., for reasons linked to regulations about consumers’ healthcare. In such cases, it would be important to collect data, coming in real-time through sensors, and then store them in the blockchain, so that they can become immutable and tamper-proof. In this paper, the design and development of a software framework that allows Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices to interact directly with an Ethereum-based blockchain are reported. The proposed solution represents an alternative way for integrating a wide category of IoT devices without relying on a centralized intermediary and third-party services. The main applic... [more]

Keywords: alcohols combustion, alkanes combustion, combustion, Hydrogen, kinetic mechanisms, laminar burning velocity
Hydrogen is largely considered as an attractive additive fuel for hydrocarbons and alcohol-fueled engines. Nevertheless, a complete understanding of the interactions between blended fuel mechanisms under oxidative conditions at low initial temperature is still lacking. This study is devoted to the numerical investigation of the laminar burning velocity of hydrogen−hydrocarbon and hydrogen−alcohol fuels under several compositions. Estimations were compared with experimental data reported in the current literature. Additionally, the effects of hydrogen addition on engine performance, NOX, and other pollutant emissions of the mentioned fuels have been thermodynamically analyzed. From the study, it has been observed that the laminar burning velocity of the fuel mixtures increased with increasing hydrogen fractions and the peak value shifted to richer conditions. Besides, hydrogen fraction was found to increase the adiabatic flame temperatures eventually favoring the NOX formation for all f... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: feedforward control, internal combustion engine, Organic Rankine Cycle, PI control, single-screw expander, transient simulation
The internal combustion engine (ICE) as a main power source for transportation needs to improve its efficiency and reduce emissions. The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is a promising technique for exhaust heat recovery. However, vehicle engines normally operate under transient conditions with both the engine speed and torque varying in a large range, which creates obstacles to the application of ORC in vehicles. It is important to investigate the dynamic performance of an ORC when matching with an ICE. In this study, the dynamic performance of an ICE-ORC combined system is investigated based on a heavy-duty diesel engine and a 5 kW ORC with a single-screw expander. First, dynamic simulation models of the ICE and the ORC are built in the software GT-Power. Then, the working parameters of the ORC system are optimized over the entire operation scope of the ICE. A closed-loop proportional-integral (PI) control together with a feedforward control is designed to regulate the operation of the OR... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: balancing mechanism, energy management, Energy Storage, gas engines, NPV
There is the potential for hybridised gas engine-energy storage systems to participate in the Balancing Mechanism (BM) by offering a product that marries the advantages of both units. The higher price offerings are currently dominated by pumped storage (PS) assets. Given their high-flexibility, PS plants mostly offer at higher prices, but respond quicker and can run for a smaller minimum run time than a gas engine on its own. The operation of the hybrid system must match the operation of the pumped storage plants, to be able to claim a space in this part of the BM market including meeting a minimum run time and minimum start time. The business case is dependent on battery costs which in turn depend on size and operational strategy. This paper uses a case study approach to estimate Net Present Value of a hybrid system. The paper uses a mixture of publicly available data and industrially provided data within its analysis. The paper concludes that battery cost and lifespan are still issue... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: current–voltage characteristics, glass, module temperature, PV modules, soiling
With an elevation of 1000 m above sea level, once the coastal mountain range is crossed, the Atacama Desert receives the highest levels of solar radiation in the world. Global horizontal irradiations over 2500 kWh/(m2 year) and a cloudiness index below 3% were determined. However, this index rises to 45% in the coastal area, where the influence of the Pacific Ocean exists with a large presence of marine aerosols. It is on the coastal area that residential photovoltaic (PV) applications are concentrated. This work presents a study of the soiling impact on PV modules at the coastline of Atacama Desert. The current−voltage characteristics of two multicrystalline PV modules exposed to outdoor conditions were compared, while one of them was cleaned daily. Asymptotic behavior was observed in the accumulated surface dust density, over 6 months. This behavior was explained by the fact that as the glass became soiled, the probability of glass-to-particle interaction decreased in favor of a more... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator fault, fault estimator, fault-tolerant algorithm, finite-time stability, fractional-order modeling, hydraulic-turbine-governing systems
Hydropower units undertake tasks such as peak shaving, frequency modulation, and providing accident reserves in the power system. With the increasing capacity and structural complexity of power systems, hydropower units have become more important. Hydraulic-turbine-governing systems (HTGSs) need to have higher control performance and automation levels to meet the higher regulatory requirements of the power system. To achieve high-quality control, we proposed a new finite-time, fault-tolerant control method for HTGSs with an actuator fault. First, a fractional-order model for HTGSs with uncertainty, external disturbance, and an actuator fault was introduced. Second, a fault estimator that could quickly track the fault signal for an actuator fault was proposed. Then, based on the fractional-order finite-time stability theorem, a finite-time, fault-tolerant controller was proposed for the stabilization of an HTGS. Keywords: Chebyshev sphere constraint, DC-DC power converter, digital robust RST controller, parametric uncertainties
This paper presents a novel direct form to design a digital robust control using RST structure (i.e., name given because of the R, S and T polynomials computed) based on convex optimization such as Chebyshev sphere; this approach was applied to a DC-DC Buck converter. Degradation of Hydrophobic, Anti-Soiling Coatings for Solar Module Cover Glass
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anti-soiling coating, damp heat, degradation mechanisms, hydrophobic coating, photovoltaics (PV), surface analysis, UV exposure
Soiling of solar module cover glass is a serious problem for solar asset managers. It causes a reduction in power output due to attenuation of the incident light, and reduces the return on investment. Regular cleaning is required to mitigate the effect but this is a costly procedure. The application of transparent hydrophobic, anti-soiling coatings to the cover glass is a promising solution. These coatings have low surface energy and contaminants do not adhere well. Even if soiling does remain on the coated surface, it is much more easily removed during cleaning. The performance of the coatings is determined using the water contact angle and roll-off angle measurements. However, although hydrophobic coatings hold out great promise, outdoor testing revealed degradation that occurs surprisingly quickly. In this study, we report on results using laboratory-based damp heat and UV exposure environmental tests. We used SEM surface imaging and XPS surface chemical analysis to study the mechan... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow, kerogen, molecular simulation, shale oil
As an unconventional energy source, the development of shale oil plays a positive role in global energy, while shale oil is widespread in organic nanopores. Kerogen is the main organic matter component in shale and affects the flow behaviour in nanoscale-confined spaces. In this work, a molecular dynamic simulation was conducted to study the transport behaviour of shale oil within kerogen nanoslits. The segment fitting method was used to characterise the velocity and flow rate. The heterogeneous density distributions of shale oil and its different components were assessed, and the effects of different driving forces and temperatures on its flow behaviours were examined. Due to the scattering effect of the kerogen wall on high-speed fluid, the heavy components (asphaltene) increased in bulk phase regions, and the light components, such as methane, were concentrated in boundary layers.
