A Comprehensive Review and Qualitative Analysis of Micro-Combined Heat and Power Modeling Approaches
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration, engine, micro combined heat and power, Modelling, prime mover.
Concurrent production of electrical and thermal energy from a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) device is an attractive tool to address the growing energy needs of the planet. Micro CHP (µCHP) systems can reduce a building’s primary energy consumption, reduce carbon footprint, and enhance resiliency. Modeling of the µCHP helps understand the system from multiple perspectives and helps discover errors earlier, improves impact analysis and simulation of system solutions for ease of integration with the building. Consequently, there is a need for analysis of the impact of µCHP modeling approach on its reliability and flexibility. The primary objective of this paper is to review the state-of-the art models in the µCHP space with a focus towards internal combustion engine as the primary mover (PM) and limit the study to system modeling, calibration, and validation methodologies. Based on the analysis, recommendations for further model considerations and refinements are presented.

Recovery of Cenospheres and Fine Fraction from Coal Fly Ash by a Novel Dry Separation Method
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cenospheres, fluidisation, fly ash, pneumatic separation.
Aluminosilicate microspheres are a valuable fraction of coal fly ash with diverse applications due to their low density. Currently, there is no efficient and ecologically rational method of cenosphere recovery from fly ash. A combination of dry methods for the recovery of both fine ash particles and aluminosilicate microspheres from coal fly ash is presented. It is comprised of fluidised bed separation followed by screening and pneumatic separation in a free-fall air chamber. Fluidised bed separation was assisted by a mechanical activator to prevent agglomeration. This step reduced the portion of material that required further treatment by 52−55 wt.%, with the recovery of microspheres exceeding 97%. Then, the concentrates were individually subjected to pneumatic separation. The final separation product for the fly ash containing 0.64 wt.% cenospheres was a cenosphere concentrate that constituted about 17 wt.% of the initial fly ash. The recovery of cenospheres was around 81%. Usage of... [more]

The Effects of Gravity on the Pressure Drop and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Steam in Microchannels: An Experimental Study
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condenser, cooling water, heat transfer, microchannel, pressure drop.
Experiments were carried out to investigate the pressure drop and heat transfer behaviors of a microchannel condenser. The effects of gravity on the condensation of steam in the microchannels were investigated for both horizontal and vertical cases. For the experimental results, the pressure drop of vertical microchannels in the condenser is lower than for horizontal microchannels. In the case of the horizontal microchannel, as the mass flow rate of steam increases from 0.01 g·s−1 to 0.06 g·s−1, the pressure drop increases from 1.5 kPa to 50 kPa, respectively. While the mass flow rate of steam in the vertical microchannel case increases from 0.01 g·s−1 to 0.06 g·s−1, the pressure drop increases from 2.0 kPa to 44 kPa, respectively. This clearly indicates that the gravitational acceleration affects the pressure drop. The pressure drop of the vertical microchannel is lower than that obtained from the horizontal microchannel. In addition, the capacity of the condenser is the same in both... [more]

Evaluation of Actuator Disk Model Relative to Actuator Surface Model for Predicting Utility-Scale Wind Turbine Wakes
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator disk model, actuator surface model, coherent structures, dynamic mode decomposition, wake meandering, wind turbine wake.
The Actuator Disk (AD) model is widely used in Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) to simulate wind turbine wakes because of its computing efficiency. The capability of the AD model in predicting time-average quantities of wind tunnel-scale turbines has been assessed extensively in the literature. However, its capability in predicting wakes of utility-scale wind turbines especially for the coherent flow structures is not clear yet. In this work, we take the time-averaged statistics and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) modes computed from a well-validated Actuator Surface (AS) model as references to evaluate the capability of the AD model in predicting the wake of a 2.5 MW utility-scale wind turbine for uniform inflow and fully developed turbulent inflow conditions. For the uniform inflow cases, the predictions from the AD model are significantly different from those from the AS model for the time-averaged velocity, and the turbulence kinetic energy until nine rotor diameters (D) downstream of... Evaluating the Future Efficiency of Wave Energy Converters along the NW Coast of the Iberian Peninsula
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: NW Iberian Peninsula, projected efficiency, SWAN, wave energy converters, wave power.
The efficiency of wave energy converters (WECs) is generally evaluated in terms of historical wave conditions that do not necessarily represent the conditions that those devices will encounter when put into operation. The main objective of the study is to assess the historical and near future efficiency and energy cost of two WECs (Aqua Buoy and Pelamis). A SWAN model was used to downscale the wave parameters along the NW coast of the Iberian Peninsula both for a historical period (1979−2005) and the near future (2026−2045) under the RCP 8.5 greenhouse scenario. The past and future efficiency of both WECs were computed in terms of two parameters that capture the relationship between sea states and the WEC power matrices: the load factor and the capture width. The wave power resource and the electric power capacity of both the WECs will decrease in the near future. The load factor for Aqua Buoy will decrease in the entire area, while it will remain unchanged for Pelamis in most of the a... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: peer-to-peer electricity trading, photovoltaic system, progressive electricity tariff, prosumer.
Since the sharing economy emerged as a new paradigm with the development of technology, the global sharing economy market has grown rapidly. In the energy sector, peer-to-peer energy trading is being conducted to share energy produced through renewable energy systems. In this study, in the situation where energy transactions among individuals are expected to expand in the future, the types of buildings and trading to secure the economics of energy trading were compared. The types of buildings were limited to residential buildings, and the economic efficiency according to energy performance was compared. Because the government has strengthened energy performance regulations, the performance varied depending on the time of construction. Therefore, building types were divided into existing houses, new houses, and zero-energy houses. The trading types were compared to the existing methods, net-metering and feed-in tariff for small-scale distributed PV systems, with P2P trading. Thus, consu... [more]

Cost and Energy Reduction of a New nZEB Wooden Building
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cost of energy performance, cost reduction, nZEB, wooden building.
The current study demonstrates the possibilities of reducing energy use and construction costs and provides evidence that wooden nearly-zero-energy buildings (nZEB) are technically possible at affordable construction costs by using novel design processes and procurement models that enable scalable and modular production. The energy efficiency solutions were derived by increasing/decreasing the insulation value of the building envelope in successive steps. Financial calculations were based on the investment needed to achieve the nearly-zero-energy levels. Overall, many opportunities exist to decrease the cost and energy use compared to the current (pre-nZEB) practice because the net present value can change up to 150 €/m² on the same energy performance indicator (EPI) level. The EPI in the cost-even range was reached by combining a ground-source heat pump (between 115 and 128 kWh/(m2·a)) and efficient district heating (between 106 and 124 kWh/(m2·a)). As energy efficiency decreases, imp... [more]

Multiobjective Reactive Power Optimization of Renewable Energy Power Plants Based on Time-and-Space Grouping Method
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid-connected, K-means++ clustering, optimal economic operation, reactive power configuration, renewable energy generation.
The large-scale renewable energy power plants connected to a weak grid may cause bus voltage fluctuations in the renewable energy power plant and even power grid. Therefore, reactive power compensation is demanded to stabilize the bus voltage and reduce network loss. For this purpose, time-series characteristics of renewable energy power plants are firstly reflected using K-means++ clustering method. The time group behaviors of renewable energy power plants, spatial behaviors of renewable energy generation units, and a time-and-space grouping model of renewable energy power plants are thus established. Then, a mixed-integer optimization method for reactive power compensation in renewable energy power plants is developed based on the second-order cone programming (SOCP). Accordingly, power flow constraints can be simplified to achieve reactive power optimization more efficiently and quickly. Finally, the feasibility and economy for the proposed method are verified by actual renewable en... [more]

Highly Renewable District Heat for Espoo Utilizing Waste Heat Sources
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data center, decarbonization transition, energy system modeling, heat pump, open district heating network, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The district heating operator Fortum and the city of Espoo have set a goal to abandon the use of coal in district heating production and increase the share of renewable sources to 95% by the year 2029. Among renewable fuels and heat pumps, waste heat utilization has an important role in Fortum’s plans for the decarbonization of district heating production, and Fortum is considering the possibility of utilizing waste heat from a large data center in its district heating network. The goal of this paper is to investigate the feasibility and required amount of waste heat to achieve this goal. Two different operation strategies are introduced—an operation strategy based on marginal costs and an operation strategy prioritizing waste heat utilization. Each strategy is modeled with three different electricity price scenarios. Because the low temperature waste heat from a data center must be primed by heat pumps, the electricity price has a significant impact on the feasibility of waste heat ut... [more]

Arc-Phase Spark Plug Energy Deposition Characteristics Measured Using a Spark Plug Calorimeter Based on Differential Pressure Measurement
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: calorimeter, natural gas engine, spark ignition, spark plug, thermal energy.
A spark plug calorimeter is introduced for quantifying the thermal energy delivered to unreactive gas surrounding the spark gap during spark ignition. Unlike other calorimeters, which measure the small pressure rise of the gas above the relatively high gauge pressure or relative to an internal reference, the present calorimeter measured the differential rise in pressure relative to the initial pressure in the calorimeter chamber. By using a large portion of the dynamic range of the chip-based pressure sensor, a high signal to noise ratio is possible; this can be advantageous, particularly for high initial pressures. Using this calorimeter, a parametric study was carried out, measuring the thermal energy deposition in the gas and the electrical-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency over a larger range of initial pressures than has been carried out previously (1−24 bar absolute at 298 K). The spark plug and inductive ignition circuit used gave arc-type rather than glow-type discharges.... [more]

Evaluating Patterns of Building Envelope Air Leakage with Infrared Thermography
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air leakage area, infrared thermography, pressure differences, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis.
The next-generation performance-based building energy codes are focusing on minimizing building envelope air leakage. The quantification of air leakage in buildings is typically performed with a blower door test. However, this test does not provide information about the locations of air leakage. The aim of this study is to demonstrate a method involving qualitative and quantitative components that can be used to characterize locations of air leakage with infrared thermography. Since air leakage can have a significant impact on building energy consumption in cold climates, like in Canada, this approach can quickly inform where air barrier discontinuities occurred during construction or where to selectively target air sealing efforts in existing buildings. The observations from this study are presented, based on a thermographic image analysis during a depressurized blower door test at various pressures, in an attempt to quantify the relative rates of air leakage. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: geothermal energy, repurposing hydrocarbon wells, UK resource assessment.
One potential opportunity for the decarbonisation of heat supply in the UK is the repurposing of onshore hydrocarbon wells for the production and/or storage of geothermal heat. This paper reports an investigation into the most favourable candidate sites for such repurposing, taking into consideration the available thermal energy outputs and technological options for heat use. A GIS mapping model was generated, combining public domain data on onshore wells and production data from onshore fields, provided by the UK Oil and Gas Authority, with available subsurface temperature data. This model has thus integrated information on location, depth, operational status, and bottom-hole temperature for onshore hydrocarbon wells with production rates from onshore fields in the UK. Of the 2242 onshore hydrocarbon wells thus reported, 560 have the potential to be repurposed, 292 of which are currently operating. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: assembly pressure, dual hybrid microporous and gas diffusion layers with wettability distribution, low-temperature start, operation time, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell.
The low-temperature start problem of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a factor limiting their large-scale application. To improve the low-temperature start performance of a PEMFC, a novel microporous layer (MPL) and a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with planar wettability distribution, in which the hydrophilic and hydrophobic lines were arranged alternately in the in-plane direction, were investigated in this study. The influence of the dual planar-distributed wettability of the MPL and GDL on the normal temperature and low-temperature start performance of the PEMFC was investigated. Before performing the major experiment, the effect of the assembly pressure of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which has a significant effect on the PEMFC performance, was examined and determined to use in the experiment. The experimental results show that the dual hybrid MPL and GDL can further prolong the operation time of the PEMFC at different below-freezing temperatures owing to e... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fault recognition, power system fault, solar photovoltaic energy, Stockwell transform, Wigner distribution function.
Penetration level of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy in the utility network is steadily increasing. This changes the fault level and causes protection problems. Furthermore, multi-tapped structure of distribution network deployed to integrate solar PV energy to the grid and supplying loads at the same time also raised the protection challenges. Hence, this manuscript is aimed at introducing an algorithm to identify and classify the faults incident on the network of utilities where penetration level of the solar PV energy is high. This fault recognition algorithm is implemented in four steps: (1) calculation of Stockwell transform-based fault index (STFI) (2) calculation of Wigner distribution function-based fault index (WDFI) (3) calculation of combined fault index (CFI) by multiplying STFI and WDFI (4) calculation of index for ground fault (IGF) used to recognize the involvement of ground in a fault event. The STFI has the merits that its performance is least affected by the noise asso... [more]

Malaysia is in the process of liberalising its electricity supply industry (ESI) further, with the second reform series announced in September 2018. If everything goes as planned, Malaysia would be the third country in the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) to have a fully liberalised ESI after the Philippines and Singapore. A number of initiatives have been in the pipeline to be executed and a lot more will be planned. At this juncture, it is important for Malaysia to look for the best practices and lessons that can be learnt from the experience of other countries that have successfully liberalised their ESIs. Being in the same region, it is believed that there is a lot that Malaysia can learn from the Philippines and Singapore. This paper therefore presents and deliberates on the chronological development of the countries’ progressive journeys in liberalising their ESIs. Unraveling the Properties of Biomass-Derived Hard Carbons upon Thermal Treatment for a Practical Application in Na-Ion Batteries
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, hard carbon, sodium-ion batteries, valorization.
Biomass is gaining increased attention as a sustainable and low-cost hard carbon (HC) precursor. However, biomass properties are often unexplored and unrelated to HC performance. Herein, we used pine, beechwood, miscanthus, and wheat straw precursors to synthesize HCs at 1000 °C, 1200 °C and 1400 °C by a two-steps pyrolysis treatment. The final physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the HC evidenced dissimilar trends, mainly influenced by the precursor’s inorganic content, and less by the thermal treatment. Pine and beechwood HCs delivered the highest reversible capacity and coulombic efficiency (CE) at 1400 °C of about 300 mAh·g−1 and 80%, respectively. This performance can be attributed to the structure derived from the high carbon purity precursors. Miscanthus and wheat straw HC performance was strongly affected by the silicon, potassium, and calcium content in the biomasses, which promoted simultaneous detrimental phenomena of intrinsic activation, formation of a silicon... Underground Pumped-Storage Hydropower (UPSH) at the Martelange Mine (Belgium): Underground Reservoir Hydraulics
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, numerical modeling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, underground pumped storage hydropower, water transients.
The intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources requires their coupling with an energy storage system, with pumped storage hydropower (PSH) being one popular option. However, PSH cannot always be constructed due to topographic, environmental, and societal constraints, among others. Underground pumped storage hydropower (UPSH) has recently gained popularity as a viable alternative and may utilize abandoned mines for the construction of the lower reservoir in the underground. Such underground mines may have complex geometries and the injection/pumping of large volumes of water with high discharge could lead to uneven water level distribution over the underground reservoir subparts. This can temporarily influence the head difference between the upper and lower reservoirs of the UPSH, thus affecting the efficiency of the plant or inducing structural stability problems. The present study considers an abandoned slate mine in Martelange in Southeast Belgium as the lower, underground,... [more]
