Systematic Investigation of Integrating Small Wind Turbines into Power Supply for Hydrocarbon Production
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EROI, small wind turbines (SWTs), wind resource assessment
In this paper, the technical and economic feasibility of integrating SWTs (Small Wind Turbines) into remote oil production sites are investigated. Compared to large turbines in onshore and offshore wind farms, SWTs are more suitable for individual power generations. A comprehensive approach based on wind energy assessment, wind power prediction, and economic analysis is then recommended, to evaluate how, where, and when small wind production recovery is achievable in oilfields. Firstly, wind resource in oilfields is critically assessed based on recorded meteorological data. Then, the wind power potential is numerically tested using specified wind turbines with density-corrected power curves. Later, estimations of annual costs and energy-saving are carried out before and after the installation of SWT via the LCOE (Levelized Cost of Electricity) and the EROI (Energy Return on Investment). The proposed methodology was tested against the Daqing oilfield, which is the largest onshore oilfie... [more]

Hydrodynamic Effects of Tidal-Stream Power Extraction for Varying Turbine Operating Conditions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator disc, blockage ratio, local hydrodynamics, non-constant thrust coefficient, open channel flows, shock-capturing capability, tidal-stream potential energy resource assessment, turbine-wake induction factor
Realistic evaluation of tidal-stream power extraction effects on local hydrodynamics requires the inclusion of the turbine’s operating conditions (TOC). An alternative approach for simulating the turbine’s array energy capture at a regional scale, momentum sink-TOC, is used to assess the impact of power extraction. The method computes a non-constant thrust force calculated based on the turbine’s operating conditions, and it uses the wake induction factor and blockage ratio to characterise the performance of a turbine. Additionally, the momentum sink-TOC relates the changes produced by power extraction, on the velocity and sea surface within the turbine’s near-field extension, to the turbine’s thrust force. The method was implemented in two hydrodynamic models that solved gradually varying flows (GVF) and rapidly varying flows (RVF). The local hydrodynamic effects produced by tidal-stream power extraction for varying the turbine’s operating conditions was investigated in (i) the thrust... [more]

Determination of the Energy Performance of a Solar Low Energy House with Regard to Aspects of Energy Efficiency and Smartness of the House
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy performance of buildings, low energy buildings, smart buildings, solar passive systems
The paper shows how difficult it is to prove technically that a building really is both low energy and smart, and that all aspects of energy efficiency have been treated equally. Regulations connected to the determination of the energy performance of residential buildings take into account only space and hot water heating energy consumption and define the indices of maximal primary energy consumption, but not energy needs based on the architecture of the building. A single family house designed and constructed as a low energy solar house in Warsaw’s suburbs is considered. Availability of solar energy and its influence on the architecture of the house is analyzed. A specific solar passive architectural concept with solar southern and cold northern buffer spaces incorporated into the interior of the house is presented. Parameters of the building’s structure, construction materials, as well as operation parameters of equipment and heating systems based on active use of solar energy, groun... [more]

On the Hybridization of Microcars with Hybrid UltraCapacitors and Li-Ion Batteries Storage Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid storage, hybrid vehicles, Li-Ion Battery, microcars, UltraCapacitors
The objective proposed by the EU to drastically reduce vehicular CO2 emission for the years up to 2030 requires an increase of propulsion systems’ efficiency, and accordingly, the improvement their technology. Hybrid electric vehicles could have a chance of achieving this, by recovering energy during braking phases, running in pure electric mode and allowing the internal combustion engine to operate under better efficiency conditions, while maintaining traditionally expected vehicle performances (mileage, weight, available on-board volume, etc.). The energy storage systems for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have different requirements than those designed for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs); high specific power is normally the most critical issue. Using Li-ion Batteries (LiBs) in the designing of on-board Energy Storage Systems (ESS) based only on power specifications gives an ESS with an energy capacity which is sufficient for vehicle requirements. The highest specific power LiBs are... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite time thermodynamics, generalized convective heat transfer law, heated piston-type cylinder, maximum work production, optimal configuration
Optimal configurations for the working fluid expansion process in a piston-type cylinder with maximum work production are studied by applying finite time thermodynamics. The problem is solved by utilizing the modified Lagrangian. The initial and final volumes, initial internal energy and total time are fixed, and the heat transfer between the working fluid and the external heat bath obeys the generalized convective heat transfer law, which can be transformed into Newton’s heat transfer law, the Dulong−Petit heat transfer law and the square convective heat transfer law. The optimal configurations of the expansion process under three different conditions of heat transfer law are provided and compared, respectively. The results show that the heat transfer law has both quantitative and qualitative influences on the optimal configurations of the expansion process.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ideality factor, irradiance, photocurrent, saturation current, series resistance, shunt resistance, single-diode model, temperature effects
This paper presents a concise discussion and an investigation of the most literature-reported methods for modifying the lumped-circuit parameters of the single-diode model (SDM) of a photovoltaic (PV) module, to suit the prevailing climatic conditions of irradiance and temperature. These parameters provide the designer of a PV system with an essential design and simulation tool to maximize the efficiency of the system. The parameter modification methods were tested using three commercially available PV modules of different PV technologies, namely monocrystalline, multicrystalline, and thin film types. The SDM parameters of the three test modules were extracted under standard test conditions (STC) using a well-established numerical technique. Using these STC parameters as reference values, the parameter adjustment methods were subsequently deployed to calculate the modified parameters of the SDM under various operating conditions of temperature and irradiance using MATLAB-based software... Numerical Study on the Effects of Imbibition on Gas Production and Shut-In Time Optimization in Woodford Shale Formation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas production, hydraulic fracturing, imbibition, shale gas formation, shut-in time
In shale gas formations, imbibition is significant since the tight pore structure causes a strong capillary suction pressure. After hydraulic fracturing, imbibition during the period of shut-in affects the water recovery of flowback. Although there have been many studies investigating imbibition in shale formations, few papers have studied the relationship between gas production and shut-in time under the influence of imbibition. This paper developed a numerical model to investigate the effect of imbibition on gas production to optimize the shut-in time after hydraulic fracturing. This numerical model is a 2-D two-phase (gas and water) imbibition model for simulating an imbibed fluid flow and its effect on permeability, flowback, and water recovery. The experimental and field data from the Woodford shale formation were matched by the model to properly configure and calibrate the model parameters. The experimental data consisted of the relationship between the imbibed fluid volume and p... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: centralized coordination scheme, community energy systems, coordination strategy, decentralized coordination scheme, energy management, load service entity
The energy interaction among a load service entity and community energy systems in neighboring communities leads to a complex energy generation, storage, and transaction problem. A load service entity is formed by a local electricity generation system, storage system, and renewable energy resources, which can provide ancillary services to customers and the utility grid. This paper proposes two coordination schemes for the interaction of community-based energy systems and load service entities based on game-theoretic frameworks. The first one is a centralized coordination scheme with full cooperation, in which the load service entity and community energy systems jointly activate the local resources. The second one is set as a decentralized coordination scheme to obtain a relative balance of interests among the market participants in a Stackelberg framework. Two mathematical models are developed for the day-ahead decision-making of the above energy management schemes. The Shapley value m... [more]

Keywords: energy storage system, fault-tolerant photovoltaic inverter, islanding detection, power systems for renewable energy
The paper deals with design and control of a fault tolerant and reconfigurable photovoltaic converter integrating a Battery Energy Storage System as a standby backup energy resource. When a failure occurs, an appropriate control method makes the energy conversion system capable of operating in open-delta configuration in parallel with the grid as well as in islanded mode. In case network voltage is lacking due to heavy anomalies or maintenance reasons, the proposed control system is able to quickly disconnect the inverter from the grid while ensuring the energy continuity to the local load and the emergency fixtures by means of the integrated battery packs. In particular, the paper proposes a fast islanding detection method essential for the correct operation of the control system. A Review on the Influence of CO2/Shale Interaction on Shale Properties: Implications of CCS in Shales
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 injection, CO2 sequestration, CO2 storage capacity, CO2/shale interaction, shale gas
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a developed technology to minimize CO2 emissions and reduce global climate change. Currently, shale gas formations are considered as a suitable target for CO2 sequestration projects predominantly due to their wide availability. Compared to conventional geological formations including saline aquifers and coal seams, depleted shale formations provide larger storage potential due to the high adsorption capacity of CO2 compared to methane in the shale formation. However, the injected CO2 causes possible geochemical interactions with the shale formation during storage applications and CO2 enhanced shale gas recovery (ESGR) processes. The CO2/shale interaction is a key factor for the efficiency of CO2 storage in shale formations, as it can significantly alter the shale properties. The formation of carbonic acid from CO2 dissolution is the main cause for the alterations in the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the shale, which in return affect... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, signalized intersections, traffic signal control
Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales have significantly increased in recent years. They have different energy consumption patterns compared to the fuel consumption patterns of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). This study quantified the impact of intersection control approaches—roundabout, traffic signal, and two-way stop controls—on BEVs’ energy consumption. The paper systematically investigates BEVs’ energy consumption patterns compared to the fuel consumption of ICEVs. The results indicate that BEVs’ energy consumption patterns are significantly different than ICEVs’ patterns. For example, for BEVs approaching a high-speed intersection, the roundabout was found to be the most energy-efficient intersection control, while the two-way stop sign was the least efficient. In contrast, for ICEVs, the two-way stop sign was the most fuel-efficient control, while the roundabout was the least efficient. Findings also indicate that the energy saving of traffic signal coordination was... [more]

Many smart apartments and renovated residential buildings have installed Smart Meters (SMs), which collect interval data to accelerate more efficient energy management in multi-family residential buildings. SMs are widely used for electricity, but many utility companies have been working on systems for natural gas and water monitoring to be included in SMs. In this study, we analyze heating energy use data obtained from SMs for short-term monitoring and annual predictions using change-point models for the coefficient checking method. It was found that 9-month periods were required to search the best short-term heating energy monitoring periods when non-weather-related and weather-related heating loads and heating change-point temperatures are considered. In addition, the 9-month to 11-month periods were needed for the analysis to apply to other case study residences in the same high-rise apartment. For the accurate annual heating prediction, 11-month periods were necessary. Finally, th... [more]

Calculating the Energy Yield of Si-Based Solar Cells for Belgium and Vietnam Regions at Arbitrary Tilt and Orientation under Actual Weather Conditions
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: PV energy yield, PV installation, solar irradiation, tandem solar cells
Predicting actual energy harvesting of a photovoltaic (PV) installation as per site-specific conditions is essential, from the customer’s point of view, to choose suitable PV technologies as well as orientations, since most PVs usually have been designed and evaluated under standard illumination. Hence, the tendency lives in the PV community to evaluate the performance on the energy yield and not purely on the efficiency. The major drawback is that weather conditions play an important role, and recording solar spectra in different orientations is an expensive and time-consuming business. We, therefore, present a model to calculate the daily, monthly and annual energy yield of Si-based PV installations included in commercial panels as well as tandem solar cells. This methodology will be used to evaluate the benefit of potential new technologies for domestic and building integrated applications. The first advantage of such a numerical model is that the orientation of solar panels and the... [more]

Keywords: air-cooled condenser, axial flow fan, cooling performance, direct dry cooling system, partition adjustment, turbine back pressure
Axial flow fans play key roles in the thermo-flow performance of direct dry cooling system under windy conditions, so the energy efficiency of a power generating unit can be improved by optimizing the operation strategies of the axial flow fans. In this work, various measures based on the partition adjustment of axial flow fans with constant power consumption of a 2 × 660 MW power plant are studied by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods. The results show that increasing the rotational speed of the windward fans is beneficial to reduce the inlet air temperature and increase the mass flow rates of the fans, which enhance the heat rejections of the air-cooled condensers, especially at high wind speeds. Moreover, the turbine back pressures for the optimal and original cases are achieved by iterative methods, with the largest drop of 2.77 kPa at the wind speed of 12 m/s for 110-case 3 in the wind direction of −90°. Keywords: fossil fuels, renewable energy stocks, spillover effects
This paper examines the spillovers of return and volatility transmitted from fossil energies (crude oil and natural gas) and several important financial variables (stock market index, bonds, and the volatility index) to renewable stock markets in the US and Europe under the time-frequency domain frameworks. The total spillovers of return and volatility from all variables to renewable stock markets in the US are higher than those in Europe. Stock markets transmit the highest return spillovers to renewable energy stocks, which far exceed the spillovers from fossil energy to renewable energy stocks in both regions. In addition, both return and volatility spillovers could be enhanced, possibly due to specific events or sudden changes in prices. In particular, extreme events such as the Brexit referendum in 2016 influenced mostly the volatility spillovers across European markets. Moreover, the spillovers of return and volatility are contingent on frequency, and most return spillovers are co... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: reactive power control method, sensitivity between TSTTC and reactive power, TSTTC of transmission lines
With the increased proportion of intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) integrated into the sending-end, the total transfer capability of transmission lines is not sufficient during the peak periods of renewable primary energy (e.g., the wind force), causing severe RES power curtailment. The total transfer capability of transmission lines is generally restricted by the transient stability total transfer capability (TSTTC). This paper presents a reactive power control method to enhance the TSTTC of transmission lines. The key is to obtain the sensitivity between TSTTC and reactive power, while the Thevenin equivalent voltage is the link connecting TSTTC and reactive power. The Thevenin theorem states that an active circuit between two load terminals can be considered as an individual voltage source.
