Design of the Joint Motor for an Articulated Robot Considering Joint Load Characteristics
Ji-Heon Lee, Ji-Young Lee, Phuong Thi Luu, Tung Khanh Nguyen.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: articulated robot, joint motor design, rigid body dynamics, thermal analysis, torque estimation.
In this paper, we propose a method to efficiently design joint motors, which are the key elements that drive a cooperative robot. Designing joint motors with more power than the required capacity increases the volume and weight of the robot. On the other hand, designing joint motors with less power than the required capacity can lead to failure and safety accidents because of high temperature rise and mechanical instability. Therefore, in this study, the required capacities of the joint motors were determined through a dynamic analysis of the robot system and incorporated in the joint motor design specifications. An electromagnetic analysis was performed during design using the two-dimensional finite element method, and the detailed dimensions of the motor were determined using the response surface method, which is an optimal design technique. The thermal characteristics of the joint motor were evaluated using a thermal equivalent circuit. The designed joint motors were manufactured, a... [more]

Gökay Bayrak, Davut Ertekin, Hassan Haes Alhelou, Pierluigi Siano.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed generation, energy management, grid code, islanding detection, PV system.
Each country must determine the Grid Code conditions and apply these criteria to integrate distributed generation (DG) systems into the existing electricity grid and to ensure a stable power system. Thus, experimental studies are required to provide an effective, national, and specific Grid Code. In this study, the Turkish Grid Code’s electrical criteria were examined, and the application of these criteria was carried out on a developed PV-based DG. A real-time energy management system (RTEMS) was proposed in the study. Electrical parameters on the developed DG were monitored in real-time by considering IEEE 1547, IEEE 929−2000, and Turkey’s electrical criteria. A practical grid code study was firstly investigated in detail about the Turkish Grid Code by a developed real-time monitoring-control and protection system. The proposed RTEMS method in the study is implemented as an inverter-resident system; thus, it provides advantages over many energy management systems embedded in the inve... [more]

Keywords: convection, corrosion, DCLL blanket, liquid metal blankets, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), tritium, turbulence, WCLL blanket.
According to the most recently revised European design strategy for DEMO breeding blankets, mature concepts have been identified that require a reduced technological extrapolation towards DEMO and will be tested in ITER. In order to optimize and finalize the design of test blanket modules, a number of issues have to be better understood that are related to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interactions of the liquid breeder with the strong magnetic field that confines the fusion plasma. The aim of the present paper is to describe the state of the art of the study of MHD effects coupled with other physical phenomena, such as tritium transport, corrosion and heat transfer. Both numerical and experimental approaches are discussed, as well as future requirements to achieve a reliable prediction of these processes in liquid metal blankets.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution systems, electric vehicles, Optimization, power systems, smart grid, smart homes, techno-economic impact, voltage stability.
High penetration levels of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) could cause stress on the network and might violate the limits and constraints under extreme conditions, such as exceeding power and voltage limits on transformers and power lines. This paper defines extreme conditions as the state of a load or network that breaks the limits of the constraints in an optimization model. Once these constraints are violated, the optimization algorithm might not work correctly and might not converge to a feasible solution, especially when the complexity of the system increases and includes nonlinearities. Hence, the algorithm may not help in mitigating the impact of penetrating PEVs under extreme conditions. To solve this problem, an original algorithm is suggested that is able to adapt the constraints’ limits according to the energy demand and the energy needed to charge the PEVs. Different case scenarios are studied for validation purposes, such as charging PEVs under different state of charge l... [more]
Determining Actuator Requirements for Cyclic Varying Pitch Propeller for Ships
Uffe Sjølund Freiberg, Torben O. Andersen, Jens Ring Nielsen, Henrik C. Pedersen.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyclic varying pitch, propeller, ship.
In marine applications, a cyclic varying pitch (CVP) propeller is a propeller in which the propeller blade can be cyclic-pitched. This cyclic pitching of the propeller blades is used to adapt to the local flow conditions in the non-uniform wake field that the propeller operates in, behind the ship hull. This has the potential to improve the performance of the propulsion system relative to a propeller which has fixed pitch for each revolution. The potential performance improvements include increasing the propulsion efficiency and reducing the cavitation, pressure pulses, vibrations and noise problems. However, the CVP propeller is not on the market today, and several challenges have to be addressed before the CVP propeller may be realized. One of these challenges is how to design the individual cyclic pitch mechanism for the propeller. However, before the cyclic pitch mechanism can be designed, it is necessary to know the requirements for it, such as the required pitching power and torq... [more]

Emiliano Renzi, Simone Michele, Siming Zheng, Siya Jin, Deborah Greaves.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexible wave energy converters, niche applications, Wave Energy.
We review wave energy conversion technologies for niche applications, i.e., kilowatt-scale systems that allow for more agile design, faster deployment and easier operation than utility scale systems. The wave energy converters for niche markets analysed in this paper are classified into breakwater-integrated, hybrid, devices for special applications. We show that niche markets are emerging as a very vibrant landscape, with several such technologies having now achieved operational stage, and others undergoing full-scale sea trials. This review also includes flexible devices, which started as niche applications in the 1980s and are now close to commercial maturity. We discuss the strong potential of flexible devices in reducing costs and improving survivability and reliability of wave energy systems. Finally, we show that the use of WECs in niche applications is supporting the development of utility-scale projects by accumulating field experience, demonstrating success stories of grid in... Analysis of Safety Requirements for Securing the Semi-Trailer Truck on the Intermodal Railway Wagon
Michał Opala.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined transport, intermodal transport, piggyback, safety.
The article presented the issue of securing semi-trailer trucks and trailers during their transport using intermodal railway wagons as a part of combined transport. This issue was analysed in different operational conditions related to loading level, cross-winds influence, inertia forces due to the emergency braking, and track curvature. According to general rules of loading and securing cargo, described in the internal and UIC regulations, the transported load should be positioned and secured with minimised risk of undesirable displacement or rolling over during transport. Basic analysis showed that adverse conditions such as strong winds or emergency braking may require adequate additional cargo protection. The lack thereof may result in a severe accident or damage to the transported vehicle or the nearby structures. The presented results for generic road and railway freight vehicles showed that the required anti-rollover torque for a semi-trailer mounted on the railway wagon platfor... [more]
Experimental Fitting of Redesign Electrified Turbocompressor of a Novel Mild Hybrid Power Train for a City Car
Roberto Capata.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decoupling turbocharger, ebooster, experimental test, feasibility analysis.
As part of a project for the realization of a hybrid vehicle with an innovative power train system, the proposal presented is to disconnect the turbocharger group and study the different behavior of the compressor and turbine, so decoupled. In an actual turbocharger, when the power of the turbine exceeds that required by the compressor, the wastegate valve opens. In this way, a part of the flue gases does not evolve into a turbine and limits the power generated. In the solution proposed here (the paper considers only “compressor side”) all the flow rate of the flue gases is processed by the turbine. In this way, for each rpms of the IC engine, the turbine generates more power than that required by the compressor. This makes it possible to use this surplus of power for the auxiliaries and/or to recharge the battery pack of the considered hybrid vehicle. An additional advantage is, thanks to this surplus generated, that the battery pack can be smaller and can be recharged while driving.... [more]

Agnieszka Malec, Tomasz Cholewa, Alicja Siuta-Olcha.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DHW, domestic hot water tank, Energy Efficiency, tank cold water inlet, tank obstacles, thermal stratification.
Domestic hot water preparation is one of the main sources of energy consumption in households. One of the most important elements of domestic hot water (DHW) preparation installation is the storage tank. Its design can significantly affect the efficiency of the system and energy consumption for hot water preparation. This paper presents the results of an experimental study to examine seven different designs of the cold water inlet to the storage tank and the use of two types of obstacles inside this tank placed at three different heights. The number of stratification and the energy efficiency of the system for each variant were examined. Additionally, tests were carried out for different profiles of hot water consumption in order to examine the temperature changes in the DHW tank. A system with an inlet, as an elbow facing down with a single plate, turned out to be the most advantageous variant (3−8% increase in energy efficiency compared to the basic inlet variant). An analogous analy... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption chiller, desalination, preheating, silica gel, steam.
Adsorption chillers are a promising alternative to traditional compressor-based devices. Adsorption chillers can be supplied with low- or medium-temperature waste heat or heat from renewable energy sources. In addition, they can be used for water desalination purposes. Thus, the adsorption chillers are unique devices that meet essential problems of the modern world: a need to limit the negative impact of humankind on the natural environment and growing problems with access to drinking water. However, adsorption chillers also have disadvantages, including ineffective operation and large size. Therefore, in this paper, the influence of steam utilization on the operation of an adsorption chiller with water desalination function was investigated experimentally, which has not been done before. The research was carried out on the adsorption chiller, working on a silica gel−water pair, installed in the AGH UST Center of Energy. The chiller was modified to preheat the sorbent with the use of s... [more]
Design and Demonstration of Large Scale Cu2O Photocathodes with Metal Grid Structure for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting
Min-Kyu Son.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cuprous oxide, metal grid, photocathode, photoelectrochemical water splitting, upscaling.
Upscaling of photoelectrode for a practical photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting system is still challenging because the PEC performance of large-scale photoelectrode is significantly low, compared to the lab scale photoelectrode. In an effort to overcome this challenge, sputtered gold (Au) and copper (Cu) grid lines were introduced to improve the PEC performance of large-scale cuprous oxide (Cu2O) photocathode in this work. It was demonstrated that Cu grid lines are more effective than Au grid lines to improve the PEC performance of large-scale Cu2O photocathode because its intrinsic conductivity and quality of grid lines are better than ones containing Au grid lines. As a result, the PEC performance of a 25-cm2 scaled Cu2O photocathode with Cu grid lines was almost double than one without grid lines, resulting in an improved charge transport in the large area substrate by Cu grid lines. Finally, a 50-cm2 scaled Cu2O photocathode with Cu grid lines was tested in an outdoor condi... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1D image acquisition, GOTTHARD, KALYPSO, linear camera, MicroTCA, optical spectrometer.
An electro-optic detector is one of the diagnostic setups used in particle accelerators. It employs an electro-optic crystal to encode the longitudinal beam charge profile in the spectrum of a light pulse. The charge distribution is then reconstructed using data captured by a fast spectrometer. The measurement repetition rate should match or exceed the machine bunching frequency, which is often in the range of several MHz. A high-speed optical line detector (HOLD) is a linear camera designed for easy integration with scientific experiments. The use of modern FPGA circuits helps in the efficient collection and processing of data. The solution is based on Xilinx 7-Series FPGA circuits and implements a custom latency-optimized architecture utilizing the AXI4 family of interfaces. HOLD is one of the fastest line cameras in the world. Thanks to its hardware architecture and a powerful KALYPSO sensor from KIT, it outperforms the fastest comparable commercial devices.
Torque Ripple Minimizing of Uniform Slot Machines with Delta Rotor via Subdomain Analysis
Minhyeok Lee, Yunkyung Hwang, Kwanghee Nam.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-gap field calculation, cavity design, delta-type rotor, open-slot, subdomain analysis, torque ripple.
Since the slot opening is large in the uniform slot machine, the torque ripple generated by overlapping or misaligning with the rotor cavity is remarkably large in the case of interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine. In this work, it is observed that the magnitude of torque ripple depends strongly on the phase difference between air-gap field harmonics: The ripple is minimized when the two dominant harmonic components cancel each other. Based on this fact, a condition is developed to minimize torque ripple by adjusting the q-flux channel width and d-flux barrier width. The torque ripple minimizing solution is found from a level chart made by subdomain time-stepping analysis. Finite element analysis (FEA) also gives a very similar minimizing solution. A prototype machine is manufactured, and its performances are validated through experiments.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blanket and divertor, CFETR, CRAFT, experiment plan, water loop design.
As one of the tasks of the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT), a High Heat Flux (HHF) testing device will be built to test the blanket and divertor of Chinese Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR). The water loop is a key system of the HHF testing device. The main objective of the water loop is to provide deionized water at specific temperature, pressure, and flow rate for different testing experiments of the water-cooled blanket and water-cooled divertor components. The design of the water loop has been through three major steps. Firstly, the water cooled blanket and divertor were designed and analyzed, in detail, for CFETR. Secondly, thermal hydraulic features of the prototypes were abstracted from the analyses results. Then, the experiment plan was made so that the preliminary design of the water loop was carried out. The third step was the engineering design, which was conducted through cooperation with an industrial enterprise with certifications. A... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep geothermal potential, Heat-In-Place, mapping, Matlab, recoverable heat.
The assessment of the deep geothermal potential is an essential task during the early phases of any geothermal project. The well-known “Heat-In-Place” volumetric method is the most widely used technique to estimate the available stored heat and the recoverable heat fraction of deep geothermal reservoirs at the regional scale. Different commercial and open-source software packages have been used to date to estimate these parameters. However, these tools are either not freely available, can only consider the entire reservoir volume or a specific part as a single-voxel model, or are restricted to certain geographical areas. The 3DHIP-Calculator tool presented in this contribution is an open-source software designed for the assessment of the deep geothermal potential at the regional scale using the volumetric method based on a stochastic approach. The tool estimates the Heat-In-Place and recoverable thermal energy using 3D geological and 3D thermal voxel models as input data. The 3DHIP-Cal... [more]
Challenges in the Electromagnetic Design of Multiphase Machines: Winding and Equivalent Circuit Parameters
Jan Laksar, Radek Cermak, Karel Hruska.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: higher order harmonic component injection, inductance, machine design, multiphase machines, winding.
The usage of multiphase electrical drives expands the operation possibilities of electrical machines and opens new directions of research on inverter-fed electrical machines. With an increasing number of phases, the standard approach of the electromagnetic design of machines has to be generalized to m-phase systems, which is not usually respected in the literature focused on electric machine design, and it is rarely published. This paper summarizes the specific problems linked with the design of machines with different numbers of phases, focusing on the winding design and the calculation of equivalent circuit parameters. In addition to the direct effect of different numbers of phases, the impact of injecting higher order time harmonic components on the electromagnetic design of electric machines is analyzed. The obtained analytical results are verified by the measurement of a nine-phase experimental induction motor.

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bacterial diversity, hybrid biological reactor, oilfield produced water, total dissolved solids.
This experimental paper deals with the development of a hybrid biological reactor for the treatment of a synthetic oilfield produced water under an increase in total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration. To comply with strengthening regulations concerning produced water discharge and peculiar produced water compositions, a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) consisting in a combination of free activated sludge and moving biofilm supports was compared to a fixed bed hybrid biological reactor (FBHBR) consisting in a combination of free activated sludge and a fixed biofilm support. After a 216 days experimental period, the MBBR and the FBHBR were efficient to treat a synthetic produced water with chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate above 90% under an increase in TDS concentrations from 1.5 to 20 g·L−1. Ecotoxicity measurements on freshwater and marine microorganisms revealed an absence of toxicity on treated waters. A decrease in bacterial diversity indices with respect to the inoculu... [more]

Keywords: additives, Adsorption, adsorption chiller, coefficient of performance, copper, cycle time, desalination, low-temperature heat, silica gel, specific cooling power.
Adsorption chillers with desalination functionality, being devices characterised by very low electricity consumption, provide an alternative to conventional sources of cooling and water. The option of desalinating water means that the use of a single device enables obtaining two useful products. Adsorption chillers are not widely used at present. due to their low performance characteristics; these are, however, constantly being improved. This paper presents a verification of the possibility of increasing the cooling coefficient of performance (COP) and specific cooling power (SCP) of a laboratory adsorption chiller by optimising the length of cycle times and using a copper additive to silica gel with a mass fraction of 15% to increase heat transport in the bed. The choice of copper among other considered additives was determined by the conclusions from the research on the sorption kinetics of various mixtures, price and availability, and a high thermal conductivity. The device was oper... [more]
Design of a Low-Loss, Low-Cost Rolling Element Bearing System for a 5 kWh/100 kW Flywheel Energy Storage System
Peter Haidl, Armin Buchroithner.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bearing design, flywheel energy storage, lifting magnet, rolling element bearings, rotor dynamics.
The bearings of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) are critical machine elements, as they determine several important properties such as self-discharge, service life, maintenance intervals and most importantly cost. This paper describes the design of a low-cost, low-loss bearing system for a 5 kWh/100 kW FESS based on analytical, numerical and experimental methods. The special operating conditions of the FESS rotor (e.g., high rotational speeds, high rotor mass, vacuum) do not allow isolated consideration of the bearings alone, but require a systematic approach, taking into account aspects of rotor dynamics, thermal management, bearing loads and lubrication. The proposed design incorporates measures to mitigate both axial and radial bearing loads, by deploying resilient bearing seats and a lifting magnet for rotor weight compensation. As a consequence of minimized external loading, bearing kinematics also need to be considered during the design process. A generally valid, well-str... [more]

Feng Chen, Tatiana Morosuk.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, CO2 ship transportation, economic analysis, exergy analysis, liquefaction.
The transport of CO2, as a part of the carbon capture and storage chain, has received increased attention in the last decade. This paper aims to evaluate the most promising CO2 liquefaction processes that can be used for port-to-port and port−offshore CO2 ship transportation. The energetic, exergetic, and economic analyses are applied. The liquefaction pressure has been set to 15 bar (liquefaction temperature −30 °C), which corresponds to the design of the existing CO2 carriers. The three-stage vapor-compression process has been selected among closed systems (with propane-R290, ammonia-R717, and R134a as the working fluid) and the precooled Linde−Hampson process—as the open system (with R717). The three-stage vapor-compression process R290 shows the lowest energy consumption, and the CO2 liquefaction cost 21.3 USD/tCO2. Although the power consumption of precooled Linde−Hampson process is 3.1% higher than the vapor-compression process with R209, the lowest total capital expenditures are... [more]
A Review of Transverse Flux Machines Topologies and Design
Víctor Ballestín-Bernad, Jesús Sergio Artal-Sevil, José Antonio Domínguez-Navarro.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, permanent magnets, review, transverse flux machines, variable speed, wind power.
High torque and power density are unique merits of transverse flux machines (TFMs). TFMs are particularly suitable for use in direct-drive systems, that is, those power systems with no gearbox between the electric machine and the prime mover or load. Variable speed wind turbines and in-wheel traction seem to be great-potential applications for TFMs. Nevertheless, the cogging torque, efficiency, power factor and manufacturing of TFMs should still be improved. In this paper, a comprehensive review of TFMs topologies and design is made, dealing with TFM applications, topologies, operation, design and modeling.

Yong-woon Park, Jae-sub Ko, Dae-kyong Kim.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque, optimal design, single-phase brushless DC motor, sloping notch, tapered air-gap.
This paper presents a method for reducing the cogging torque for a sloping notch with two notches applied on the stator teeth. The accuracy of FEA was confirmed by a comparison with a previous model using an asymmetric notch for the experiment data and 3D FEA results, followed by a comparison of the cogging torque of a two notches model and a sloping notch model. The sloping notch model was modified to a step-sloping notch model in consideration of a potential manufacturing process. The optimal design for minimizing the cogging torque was developed considering the sloping degree, angle, position, and size of the notches. As the optimal design result, the cogging torque on the optimal model was reduced. Finally, the analysis and optimal design results were confirmed by FEA.

Min Wang, Xiaobin Dong, Youchun Zhai.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen storage, integrated charging station, NSGA-II, optimized configuration.
This paper designs the integrated charging station of PV and hydrogen storage based on the charging station. The energy storage system includes hydrogen energy storage for hydrogen production, and the charging station can provide services for electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles at the same time. To improve the independent energy supply capacity of the hybrid charging station and reduce the cost, the components are reasonably configured. To minimize the configuration cost of the integrated charging station and the proportion of power purchase to the demand of the charging station, the energy flow strategy of the integrated charging station is designed, and the optimal configuration model of optical storage capacity is constructed. The NSGA-II algorithm optimizes the non-inferior Pareto solution set, and a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation evaluates the optimal configuration.

Kihwan Kim, Woo-Shik Kim, Jae-Bong Lee.
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: moisture carry over, swirl-vane separator, two-phase pressure drop.
The most important design parameters of a moisture separator to optimize the efficiency of a nuclear power plant are the moisture carry over and pressure drop. An air-water test facility was constructed to evaluate the design parameters for various types of conventional moisture separators in Korea. In this study, a half scale of swirl-vane separator was designed, and test conditions were defined based on the scaling law to cover a wide range of operating conditions. The moisture carry over was measured using an isokinetic sampling system for 34 different flow conditions. The MCO was in range of 0.30−7.05% according to the test conditions. Single and two-phase flow experiments were also carried out to identify the two-phase pressure drop characteristics. Based on the obtained results, the proposed empirical correlation model was extended to a submerged separator and applying these results to a full scale system is discussed in this paper.

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Cuk converter, modified Cuk converter, non-isolated DC–DC converters.
This study proposes a novel modified Cuk converter. The proposed converter attempts to resolve the limitations of the conventional converters, such as voltage gain limitations of a canonical Cuk converter. Therefore, the mentioned improvement has made the proposed converters more compatible for renewable energy applications. Moreover, the increase of the voltage gain in the proposed converter has not impacted the efficiency or the voltage stress of the switches, which is common in other voltage boosting techniques, such as cascading methods. Furthermore, the advantages of a Cuk converter, such as continuity of the input current, have been maintained. The average voltage/current stresses of the semiconductor devices and various types of power losses have been calculated and compared with the existing topologies. Moreover, the non-ideal voltage gain of the proposed converters was compared with the other high step-up topologies. Eventually, the simulation results with PLECS, along with th... [more]
