Performance of Pure Crossflow Heat Exchanger in Sensible Heat Transfer Application
Karthik Silaipillayarputhur, Tawfiq Al-Mughanam.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: correction factors, design graphs, pure cross flow heat exchanger.
All process industries involve the usage of heat exchanger equipment and understanding its performance during the design phase is very essential. The present research work specifies the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger in terms of dimensionless factors such as number of transfer units, capacity rate ratio, and heat exchanger effectiveness. Steady state sensible heat transfer was considered in the analysis. The matrix approach that was established in the earlier work was used in the study. The results were depicted in the form of charts, tables, and performance equations. It was observed that indeterminately increasing the number of transfer units past a threshold limit provided very marginal improvement in the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger. Likewise, flow pattern in a heat exchanger is usually assumed either as mixed or unmixed. However, due to various operating conditions, partially mixed conditions do exist. This work considers partially mixed conditi... [more]
Noise Reduction Design with Trapezoidal Back-EMF and Asymmetric Air-Gap for Single-Phase BLDC Refrigerator Cooling Fan Motor
Jin-Hwan Lee, Sang-Yong Jung.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetric air-gap, claw-pole motor, fast Fourier transform, noise reduction design, single-phase BLDC motor, trapezoidal back-EMF.
In this study, a novel method for reducing the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors employed as refrigerator fan blowers is proposed. A single-phase claw-pole motor has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing, and a high number of turns. However, in such motors, current delays occur owing to a high inductance; therefore, it is necessary to merge the back-electromotive force and current phases into the same phase using the phase advance method. Additionally, a single-phase motor exhibits dead torque and zero torque at an electrical angle of 180° owing to its electrical characteristics, and the dead torque deteriorates the average torque and torque ripple characteristics of the motor. In this study, a novel method is proposed to make the air gap asymmetrical by tilting the claw to reduce the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors. An asymmetric air gap allows the cogging torque to eliminate the dead torque caused by alignment torques, causing th... [more]

Aiman Albatayneh, Adel Juaidi, Ramez Abdallah, Francisco Manzano-Agugliaro.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficient lighting, Jordan, LED, low energy building, optimum windows size, WWR.
Based on recent developments and the predicted future advancement of lighting technologies, researchers are now questioning the extent to which daylight is effective in lowering the overall energy consumption of buildings. As light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are highly energy efficient, the amount of power consumed for lighting purposes can be reduced, even in situations where the lighting system is at its full power. It has already been demonstrated that LED-lighting technologies can facilitate significant energy savings through minimizing window size (the main source of heat loss in buildings), and there is considerable potential for developing the LEDs’ source efficacy and lighting-product efficiency to ultimately achieve levels of efficacy of approximately 350 lumens per Watt (lm/W). For building designs to be sustainable in the future, it is critical that the windows-to-wall ratio (WWR) is optimized to minimize both heating and cooling loads, as well as the total energy consu... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: post-mining areas, process map, reclamation, recultivation.
In the present day, Europe is moving away from fossil fuels. This is due to the need to reduce CO2 emissions released to the atmosphere. As a result of this process, especially in Upper Silesia, Poland, there will be more areas requiring measures after the closing of mines. Reclamation of post-mining areas is a very difficult task, as there is no universal method of planning the recultivation. During mining operations, we observed many forms of environmental degradation. The article presents the use of one of the newer and increasingly used modeling methods in recultivation processes—the process map. Analysis of the investment is presented, based on the example of the recultivation of a pit after closing the hard coal mine. The main purpose of the analysis was to shorten the designing time of the construction and realization process. Two maps of processes were made, and a map of the existing and desired processes, as well as the benefits from this, are shown. This article presents only... [more]

Keywords: autonomous sensors, connected vehicles, electric vehicle, energy harvesting, IoT, power management, smart cities, Tesla, wind energy harvester.
Electric vehicles (EVs) have recently gained momentum as an integral part of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) when authorities started expanding their low emission zones (LEZs) in an effort to build green cities with low carbon footprints. Energy is one of the key requirements of EVs, not only to support the smooth and sustainable operation of EVs, but also to ensure connectivity between the vehicle and the infrastructure in the critical times such as disaster recovery operation. In this context, renewable energy sources (such as wind energy) have an important role to play in the automobile sector towards designing energy-harvesting electric vehicles (EH-EV) to mitigate energy reliance on the national grid. In this article, a novel approach is presented to harness energy from a small-scale wind turbine due to vehicle mobility to support the communication primitives in electric vehicles which enable plenty of IoV use cases. The harvested power is then processed through a regulation circui... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AFE, EV charger, grid-tied isolated unidirectional converter, high power, high-frequency planar transformer, phase-shifted full bridge, PSFB, SiC, three-phase Active Front End.
Phase-Shifted Full Bridge (PSFB) topology in its four-diode variant is the choice with the lowest part count in applications that demand high power, high voltage, and galvanic isolation, such as in Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers. Even though the topology is prevalent in power electronics applications, no single, unified analytical model has been proposed for the design process of four-diode PSFB converters. As a result, engineers must rely on simulations and empirical results obtained from previously built converters when selecting components to properly match the DC source voltage level with the DC load voltage requirements. In this work, the authors provide a design-oriented analysis approach for obtaining the output voltage and semiconductor current values, ready for implementation in a spreadsheet- or MATLAB-type software to automate design optimization. The proposed formulas account for all the first-order nonlinear dependencies by considering the impact of each of the following e... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, carbon dioxide emission quotes payment, near-zero emission technologies, oxy-fuel combustion power cycles, technical and economic assessment, TPP.
This paper is devoted to improvement of environmental safety in hydrocarbon-firing TPPs. Despite the development of renewable power sources, the number of traditional power production facilities continues its growth. The toxic emission mitigation in traditional TPPs has been deeply investigated, but the problem of greenhouse gas atmospheric emissions is of topical interest. Oxy-fuel technology reduces CO2 emissions and is highly efficient and environmentally safe. Also, it requires relatively low capital investments. Thermal efficiency analysis shows that the Allam cycle facilities have the best efficiency. Their thermodynamic parameters can be optimized with minimal primary costs and capital investments. This newly developed analysis was used to compare the investment efficiency of projects for the buildup of oxy-fuel and combined cycle facilities. Without emission quote payments, the NPV of combined cycle projects is 16% higher, as well as having a lower DPP. The electricity producti... [more]

Kamil Cichostępski, Jerzy Dec.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acquisition design, high-resolution shallow reflection seismic, seismic imaging of carbonate deposit, sulphur ore deposit.
In this article we present a novel method for the estimation of sulphur deposit resources based on high-resolution shallow reflection seismic survey and well logging. The study area was sited in the northern part of the Carpathian Foredeep (SE Poland), where sulphur ore occurs in carbonate rocks at a depth of about 120 m, with a thickness of approximately 25 m. The results of many years of seismic monitoring performed in the area of the sulphur deposit allowed us to determine the quantitative relationships between the amplitude of the seismic signal reflected from the top of the deposit and its petrophysical parameters such as porosity and sulphur content. The method of evaluating sulphur deposit is based on extensive statistics concerning the reservoir properties obtained from borehole data. We also discuss a methodology for conducting field acquisition and processing of seismic data in the aspect of mapping the actual amplitudes of the signal reflected from the top of a deposit. The... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), power density, power factor, traction motor, voltage-parameter map (VP-Map).
A voltage-parameter map (VP-Map) is proposed for predicting the performance of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid EVs (HEVs), which varies with respect to the parameters in a variable load and flux-weakening range, and determining the design parameters. Through this, the maximum torque that can be generated at the maximum speed, the input current for generation of the rated torque, and whether the vehicle is operable with a light load are predicted, and the design parameters suitable for the 120-kW class interior permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous motor for HEVs, which is the target electric motor of this study, are determined. A flux-concentrating PM synchronous motor (FCPMSM) is proposed that can be designed using the desired design parameters depending on the degree of the flux concentration. The validity of the VP-Map was verified by analyzing the characteristics of three types of FCPMSMs with different parameter combinations, and a PM synchronous motor for an EV having a high outpu... Keywords: chaotic map, dual-input PSS, ITAE, JAYA algorithm, power system stabilizer.
This work aims to improve the stability of a system that consists of one generator using a dual-input stabilizer of a power system. For this purpose, a new design method based on a chaotic JAYA algorithm is proposed. This algorithm hybridizes the original JAYA algorithm with chaos to improve its exploration and exploitation capabilities. Indeed, the disordered numbers generated by the chaotic map are exploited to control the standard JAYA algorithm’s search equations. The issue of design is stated as an optimization problem. The proposed technique is involved in the selection of optimal values of the dual-input power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters. The efficiency of the proposed controller is assessed under various loading conditions and compared with the original JAYA, cuckoo search and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms. The target function consists of the integration of absolute error multiplied by the time, including the speed deviation is considered for the controlle... [more]

Keywords: axial flow pump, deflection angle, inlet passage, numerical simulation, pressure fluctuation.
The deflection flow of inlet passage seriously affects the performance of axial flow pump devices, and reduces the operation efficiency and stability of pumping station systems. In this paper, the influence of different deflection angles on the internal flow characteristics and outlet pulsation characteristics of the inlet passage of the vertical axial flow pump are studied. Based on the Reynolds time-averaged N-S equation of the three-dimensional incompressible fluid and the standard k-ε turbulence model, the model axial flow pump device was numerically simulated. Under optimal working conditions (Qbep = 31.04 L/s), the internal flow field of the axial flow pump was analyzed to study the change law of the axial flow pump performance under different deflection angles. Under the flow conditions of 0.6 Qbep, 1.0 Qbep and 1.2 Qbep, the pulsation characteristics of the outlet of inlet passage in axial flow pump at different deflection angles were analyzed. The result shows that with the in... [more]

Keywords: data driven, eddy current losses, multi-layer perceptron, support vector regression, turbo-generator.
In order to study the multiple restricted factors and parameters of the eddy current loss of generator end structures, both the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and support vector regression (SVR) are used to study and predict the mechanism of the synergistic effect of metal shield conductivity, relative permeability of clamping plates and structural characteristics of eddy current losses. Based on the eddy current losses of generator end structures under different metal shielding thicknesses and electromagnetic properties, the calculation accuracy of the MLP and SVR is compared. The prediction method gives an effective means for the complex design of the end region of the generator, which reduces the effort of the designers. It also promotes the design efficiency of the electrical generator.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC traction systems, harmonics, power harmonic filters, total harmonic distortion, traction substation.
The paper deals with a new methodology for calculating the filter parameters. The basis is respect for the fact that the real filter current consists of other harmonic components, which filter is tuned. The proposed methodology was used to design filters for traction substation 25 kV/50 Hz. The operation of the locomotives in the AC supply systems of 25 kV/50 Hz leads to a rising of higher order harmonic currents. Due to the 1-phase supply system, these are mainly the 3rd and 5th harmonics. By simulation and subsequent measurement of the proposed traction power station filters the proposed methodology was verified. Thus, the filter design can also be used for filter compensating stations of the standard 3-phase distribution network. The described method presents an optimal filter design without unnecessary oversizing. This fact reduces the size and cost of the filter. It is shown that it is possible to design a filter that meets the requirements for power quality under extreme load and... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling efficiency, distribution of cold flow, flow loss, integrated afterburner, thermal mixing efficiency.
Integrated design is a trend in the development of afterburners, and the distribution of cold flow is directly related to their flow field characteristics, combustion organization, and the cooling effect of components. Numerical simulations were performed to illustrate the effects of bypass flow distribution on the flow distribution, mixing characteristics, and cooling efficiency of the components by varying the cooling flow path structure parameters. Within the range of parameters in this study, it can be indicated that with the increase of heat shield inlet height and afterburner annulus height, the total pressure recovery coefficient along the path increased accordingly, and the increasing rate at the afterburner outlet is 1.12% and 1.19%, respectively. The average cooling efficiency of radial flameholder, circumferential flameholder, and fuel injector all decrease, but the rate of decrease varies slightly depending on the location of the components. The increase of heat shield inle... [more]

Abishek Kasturi, Jorge F. Gabitto, Radu Custelcean, Costas Tsouris.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: amino acids, CO2 absorption, Process Intensification, slurry bubble column.
Environmentally friendly amino-acid salt solutions are used for the absorption of carbon dioxide from concentrated flue-gas streams via chemical absorption. Process intensification reduces operating and capital costs by combining chemical reactions and separation operations. Here, we present a new process-intensification approach that combines the CO2 capture and the amino-acid regeneration steps into a single process carried out in a slurry three-phase reactor. The absorbed CO2 precipitates as a solid carbonated guanidine compound. The cycle is completed by separation of the solid precipitate to strip the CO2 and regenerate the guanidine compound, while the liquid solution is recycled to the slurry reactor. The process was studied by modifying a model developed by the authors for a gas-liquid bubble column without the presence of the guanidine compound. The guanidine precipitation reaction was accounted for using kinetic parameters calculated by the authors in another study. The propo... [more]

Keywords: experimental setup, passive heat-exchanger, power generation, thermoelectric generator, waste heat recovery.
One of the measures to fight against the current energy situation and reduce the energy consumption at an industrial process is to recover waste heat and transform it into electric power. Thermoelectric generators can be used for that purpose but there is a lack of experimental studies that can bring this technology closer to reality. This work presents the design, optimizations and development of two devices that are experimented and compared under the same working conditions. The hot side heat exchanger of both generators has been designed using a computational fluid dynamics software and for the cold side of the generators two technologies have been analysed: a finned dissipater that uses a fan and free convection biphasic thermosyphon. The results obtained show a maximum net generation of 6.9W in the thermoelectric generator with the finned dissipater; and 10.6W of power output in the generator with the biphasic thermosyphon. These results remark the importance of a proper design o... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 1-alkenes, Arrhenius correlation, chemical kinetics, reactivity comparison.
Ignition delay times of small alkenes are a valuable constraint for the refinement of the core kinetic mechanism of hydrocarbons used in representing combustion properties of real fuels. Moreover, the chemical reactivity comparison of those small alkenes provides a reference in object-oriented fuel design and logical combustion utilization. In this study, the ignition delay times of C2−C4 alkenes (ethylene, propene and 1-butene) were measured behind reflected shock waves first, with a fixed oxygen concentration (XO2 = 6%) and equivalence ratio (φ = 1.0) at various pressures of 1.2, 4.0 and 16.0 atm, in order to facilitate the comparison. Three chemical-based-Arrhenius-type correlations covering a wide range of temperature, pressure, equivalence ratio, and dilution were proposed. The simplified reaction network for pyrolysis and oxidation of 1-alkenes was depicted relying on the reaction classes of alkenes. Nine generally accepted mechanisms were used to simulate the ignition delay time... [more]

Keywords: autonomous shuttle, contactless charging, finite elements method (FEM), inductive power transfer (IPT), Ni–MH batteries.
The inductive power transfer (IPT) is expected to greatly contribute towards electrification in transportation. In fact, IPT charging technology has the potential to overcome several limitations of conductive charging: in particular, the process can be fully automatable, and both static and dynamic charging are allowed, thus reducing the size of the battery pack. Additionally, safety is increased due to the absence of safety issues related to loss of cable insulation or to the unwanted interruption of the plug-socket connection. This paper presents, from a systematic approach, the design and realization of a prototype for IPT charging of autonomous shuttles in automated warehouses. First of all, the typical mission profile of the shuttle was properly identified, and a storage system based on power-oriented electrochemical cells was sized. Based on that, the architecture of the IPT system was chosen, both for transmitting and receiving sections. The pads were designed for this purpose,... [more]

Young Jin Hwang.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field coil, high-temperature superconductor, homopolar synchronous machine, no-insulation.
This paper deals with a homopolar synchronous machine (HSM) applying high-temperature superconducting (HTS) field coils. Superconductors, especially high-temperature superconductors, have high potential as advanced materials for next-generation electrical machines due to their high critical current density and excellent mechanical strength. However, coils made with high-temperature superconductors have a high risk of being damaged in the event of a quench due to the intrinsic low normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV). Therefore, the coil protection issue has been regarded as one of the most important research fields in HTS coil applications. Currently, the most actively studied method for quench protection of the HTS coils is the no-insulation (NI) winding technique. The NI winding technique is a method of winding an HTS coil without inserting an insulating material between turns. This method can automatically bypass the current to the adjacent turn when a local quench occurs inside... [more]
