Bringing Structure to the Wave Energy Innovation Process with the Development of a Techno-Economic Tool
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: commercial attractiveness, scenario creation, structured innovation, technical achievability, Wave Energy.
Current wave energy development initiatives assume that available designs have the potential for success through continuous learning and innovation-based cost reduction. However, this may not be the case, and potential winning technologies may have been overlooked. The scenario creation tool presented in this paper provides a structured method for the earliest stages of design in technology development. The core function of the scenario creation tool is to generate and rank scenarios of potential Wave Energy Converter (WEC) attributes and inform the user on the areas of the parameter space that are most likely to yield commercial success. This techno-economic tool uses a structured innovation approach to identify commercially attractive and technically achievable scenarios, with a scoring system based on their power performance and costs. This is done by leveraging performance and cost data from state-of-the-art wave energy converters and identifying theoretical limits to define thresh... [more]

Joint Research on Aerodynamic Characteristics and Handling Stability of Racing Car under Different Body Attitudes
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: aerodynamic characteristics, body attitude, closed-loop design, crosswind, handling stability, pitching motion, wind tunnel test.
With the rapid development of FSAE, the speed of racing cars has increased year by year. As the main research content of racing cars, aerodynamics has received extensive attention from foreign teams. For racing cars, the aerodynamic force on the aerodynamic device ultimately acts on the tires through the transmission of the body and the suspension. When the wheel is subjected to the vertical load generated by the aerodynamic device, the ultimate adhesion capacity of the wheel is improved. Under changing conditions, racing wheels can withstand greater lateral and tangential forces. Therefore, the effects of aerodynamics have a more significant impact on handling stability. The FSAE racing car of Jilin University was taken as the research object, and this paper combines the wind tunnel test, the numerical simulation and the dynamics simulation of the racing system. The closed-loop design process of the aerodynamics of the FSAE racing car was established, and the joint study of aerodynami... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cellulose pad, induced ventilation, natural ventilation, passive cooling system, wind catcher, wind energy.
The effectiveness of using wetted cellulose pads on improving the performance of two conventional passive cooling systems has been evaluated. First, an experimental design was developed to determine the impact of using a wetted cellulose pad on the temperature and velocity of the airflow. A cellulose pad (7090 model) with a cross-sectional area of 0.5 × 0.5 m2 and three different thicknesses of 10, 15, and 30 cm were selected and tested. The results indicated that using wetted cellulose pads with thicknesses ranging from 10−30 cm decreased the outlet airflow temperature from 11.3 to 13.7 °C on average. For free airflow at velocity 3.5 m/s, the outlet airflow velocity from the wetted cellulose pad decreased to 0.9, 0.7 and 0.6 m/s, respectively, for cellulose pads with thicknesses of 10, 15, and 30 cm. By applying experimental results on a psychrometric chart, the humidity ratio of outlet airflow was obtained between 40−70%. The study established airflow velocity as the critical paramet... [more]

A Calibration of the Solar Load Ratio Method to Determine the Heat Gain in PV-Trombe Walls
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: design evaluation, passive systems, PV-Trombe wall, solar load ratio.
The Trombe wall is a passive system used in buildings that indirectly transfers thermal energy to the adjacent environment by radiation and convection, and directly by the thermo-circulation that arises in the air cavity delimited between a transparent and an absorbing surface. Nevertheless, the latter is painted black to increase the energy gains, but this produces a negative visual impact and promotes the overheating risk in summer. To mitigate these aspects, a hybrid Trombe wall equipped with PV panels can be employed. The PV installation results in a more pleasing wall appearance and the overheating risk reduces because part of the absorbed solar radiation is transformed into electricity. To determine the actual performance of a such system, transient simulation tools are required to consider properly the wall thermal storage features, variation of the optical properties, air thermo-circulation, and PV power production. Alternatively, regarding the traditional Trombe wall, the lite... [more]

Influence of Fluid Compressibility and Movements of the Swash Plate Axis of Rotation on the Volumetric Efficiency of Axial Piston Pumps
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: axial piston pump, fluid bulk modulus, hydraulic pump, volumetric efficiency.
This paper describes the design of a swash plate axial piston pump and the theoretical models describing the bulk modulus of aerated and non-aerated fluids. The dead space volume is defined and the influence of this volume and the fluid compressibility on the volumetric efficiency of the pump is considered. A displacement of the swash plate rotation axis is proposed to reduce the dead space volume for small swash plate swing angles. A prototype design of a pump with a displaced axis of rotation of a swash plate with two directions of delivery is presented, in which the capacity is changed by means of a valve follow-up mechanism. Comparative results for a pump with a displaced and a non-displaced swash plate rotation axis are presented, which confirm that displacement of the swash plate rotation axis causes an increase in volumetric efficiency that is apparent for high pressure discharge and small swash plate angles. The determined characteristics were compared with a mathematical model... [more]

Investigation of Torque Performance and Flux Reversal Reduction of a Three-Phase 12/8 Switched Reluctance Motor Based on Winding Arrangement
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: core loss, dynamic torque, flux reversal, leakage-flux, magnetic flux path, static torque, switched reluctance machine, torque ripple, winding arrangement.
The goal of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of two types of winding arrangements for a three-phase 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM), where short- and fully-pitched winding arrangements under unipolar operation are considered. From the analytical results, the short-pitched winding has the best torque per copper weight ratio. The core loss based on counting the number of flux reversals in the stator yoke for each winding arrangement is also proposed and mentioned. To reduce the magnetic flux reversals in the stator core, changing the direction of the magnetic flux path by modifying the winding polarities of the short-pitched winding could reduce 10−13% of core loss compared to the conventional winding. A 1 kW, 12/8 SRM prototype for the ventilation fan application is constructed and tested in order to verify the design consideration of winding configuration. At the rated condition, a maximum efficiency around 82.5% could be achieved.

A Design Methodology for EV-WPT Systems to Resonate at Arbitrary Given Bands
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: EV-WPT, frequency splitting, magnetic coupling, multi-band, system design.
Due to the effects of splitting frequency and cross coupling, the resonant frequency of the WPT system usually deviates from the given frequency band, and the system operating at the given frequency band suffers a very low output power. Ensuring that electric vehicle wireless power transfer (EV-WPT) systems operate at a resonant state is the prerequisite for efficient energy transfer. For this purpose, a novel design method by manipulating the eigenstate parameters is proposed in this paper. The proposed system can make a EV-WPT system with arbitrary coil successfully to resonate at any given bands, not just a single band. Therefore, the method designed in this article cannot only eliminate the problem of low power caused by frequency deviation, but also realize the application requirements of multiple frequency bands. Firstly, this article establishes an accurate state space model of an n-coil fully coupled EV-WPT system, and after that, the analytical current response on each circuit... [more]

Thermal Management of Bone Drilling Based on Rotating Heat Pipe
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bone drilling, bone temperature, rotating heat pipe, thermal management, thermal osteonecrosis.
Bone drilling is a common surgical operation, which often causes an increase in bone temperature. A temperature above 47 °C for 60 s is the critical temperature that can be allowed in bone drilling because of thermal bone osteonecrosis. Therefore, thermal management in bone drilling by a rotating heat pipe was proposed in this study. A new rotating heat pipe drill was designed, and its heat transfer mechanism and thermal management performance was investigated at occasions with different input heat flux and rotational speed. Results show that boiling and convection heat transfer occurred in the evaporator and film condensation appears in the condenser. The thermal resistance decreases with the increase of the rotational speed at the range from 1200 to 2000 rpm and it decreases as the input heat flux rises from 5000 to 10,000 W/m2 and increases at 20,000 W/m2. The temperature on the drill tip was found to be 46.9 °C with an input heat flux of 8000 W/m2 and a rotational speed of 2000 rpm... [more]

Assessment of Wind and Solar Hybrid Energy for Agricultural Applications in Sudan
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: HOMER Pro®, hybrid renewable energy, net present cost, techno-economic optimization.
In addition to zero-carbon generation, the plummeting cost of renewable energy sources (RES) is enabling the increased use of distributed-generation sources. Although the RES appear to be a cheaper source of energy, without the appropriate design of the RES with a true understanding of the nature of the load, they can be an unreliable and expensive source of energy. Limited research has been aimed at designing small-scale hybrid energy systems for irrigation pumping systems, and these studies did not quantify the water requirement, or in turn the energy required to supply the irrigation water. This paper provides a comprehensive feasibility analysis of an off-grid hybrid renewable energy system for the design of a water-pumping system for irrigation applications in Sudan. A systematic and holistic framework combined with a techno-economic optimization analysis for the planning and design of hybrid renewable energy systems for small-scale irrigation water-pumping systems is presented. Keywords: Fresnel lens, full width at half maximum, Gaussian source, groove number, optical efficiency, solar flux.
A novel three-dimensional elliptical-shaped Fresnel lens (ESFL) analytical model is presented to evaluate and maximize the solar energy concentration of Fresnel-lens-based solar concentrators. AutoCAD, Zemax and Ansys software were used for the ESFL design, performance evaluation and temperature calculation, respectively. Contrary to the previous modeling processes, based on the edge-ray principle with an acceptance half-angle of ±0.27° as the key defining parameter, the present model uses, instead, a Gaussian distribution to define the solar source in Zemax. The results were validated through the numerical analysis of published experimental data from a flat Fresnel lens. An in-depth study of the influence of several ESFL factors, such as focal length, arch height and aspect ratio, on its output performance is carried out. Moreover, the evaluation of the ESFL output performance as a function of the number/size of the grooves is also analyzed. Compared to the typical 1−16 grooves per mi... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: converter characteristics, converter design, isolated dc-dc converter, single active bridge.
Currently, due to its various applications, the high-performance isolated dc-dc converter is in demand. In applications where unidirectional power transfer is required, the single active bridge (SAB) is the most suitable one due to its simplicity and ease of control. The general schematic of the SAB converter consists of an active bridge and a passive bridge, which are connected through a high-frequency transformer thus isolated. The paper summarizes the behavior of this converter in its three operation modes, namely the continuous, discontinuous, and boundary modes. Later, the features of this converter, such as its input-to-output and external characteristics are discussed. Input-to-output characteristics include the variation of converter output power, voltage, and current with an input control variable i.e., phase-shift angle, whereas the external characteristic is the variation of the output voltage as a function of output current. Keywords: equations of state, fire-flooding exhaust, MAPE, physical properties, reinjection process.
The reinjection of the fire-flooding exhaust is a novel disposal process for handling the exhaust produced by the in-situ combustion technology. For reasonable process design and safe operation, it is of great significance to select an optimum property calculation method for the fire-flooding exhaust. However, due to the compositional particularity and the wide range of operating parameters during reinjection, the state equations in predicting the exhaust properties over the wide range of operating parameters have not been studied clearly yet. Hence, this paper investigates the applicability of several commonly-used equations of state, including the Soave−Redlich−Kwong equation, Peng−Robinson equation, Lee−Kesler−Plocker equation, Benedict−Webb−Rubin−Starling equation, and GERG-2008 equations.
