At what Pressure Shall CO2 Be Transported by Ship? An in-Depth Cost Comparison of 7 and 15 Barg Shipping
Simon Roussanaly, Han Deng, Geir Skaugen, Truls Gundersen.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon capture and storage, CO2 shipping, CO2 transport, optimal transport pressure, techno-economic.
The pipeline has historically been the preferred means to transport CO2 due to its low cost for short distances and opportunities for economies of scale. However, interest in vessel-based transport of CO2 is growing. While most of the literature has assumed that CO2 shipping would take place at low pressure (at 7 barg and −46 °C), the issue of identifying best transport conditions, in terms of pressure, temperature, and gas composition, is becoming more relevant as ship-based carbon capture and storage chains move towards implementation. This study focuses on an in-depth comparison of the two primary and relevant transport pressures, 7 and 15 barg, for annual volumes up to 20 MtCO2/year and transport distances up to 2000 km. We also address the impact of a number of key factors on optimal transport conditions, including (a) transport between harbours versus transport to an offshore site, (b) CO2 pressure prior to conditioning, (c) the presence of impurities and of purity constraints, a... Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, comfort map, comfort theory, interpolation procedure.
This paper presents an empirical approach to design ideal workplaces using the PMV-PPD (predicted mean vote−predicted percentage dissatisfied) method set in ISO 7730 in terms of thermal comfort. The key concept behind our method is that the overall employee satisfaction might be improved if they can select the most suitable desk based on their personal comfort preferences. To support desk sharing, we designed a comfort map toolkit, which can visualize the distribution of comfort parameters within office spaces. The article describes the steps to create comfort maps with methods already widely used, as well as a new one developed by our research team, including the measurement procedures and the theoretical background required.

Tomi Thomasson, Kirsikka Kiviranta, Antton Tapani, Matti Tähtinen.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined heat and power, flexibility, island energy system, system optimization.
As energy systems globally are transitioning into renewable energy, simultaneous targets of high self-sufficiency have led to complex system design proposals. While conventional technology solutions would reduce the complexity in theory, limitations in the potential outcome may exist. To address this dilemma, the work quantified the systemic value provided by a conventional solution; biomass combined heat and power (CHP) production, in terms of economic feasibility, provided flexibility and energy self-sufficiency. The analysis focused on the renewable energy integration of the Åland Islands, where the synergetic island energy system is heavily increasing the wind power capacity. While considering local fuel resource availability, multiple alternative energy system scenarios were constructed. To evaluate the scenarios, the work developed and validated a combined dispatch and investment optimization model. The results showed that the studied conventional approaches limited the achievabl... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BMS, building dynamic energy model, DesignBuilder, HVAC, indoor climate parameters, measurements.
Calibration of the energy model of a building is one of the essential tasks required to determine the efficiency of building management systems, and both their own and other systems’ improvement potential. In order to make the building energy model as accurate as possible, it is necessary to collect comprehensive data on its operation and sometimes to assess the missing information. This paper represents the process of developing an energy model for an administrative building and its calibration procedure, using detailed long-term measurement and building management system (BMS) data. Indoor air temperature, CO₂ concentration, and relative humidity were experimentally measured and evaluated separately. Such dual application of data reduces the inaccuracy of the assumptions made and assesses the model’s accuracy. The DesignBuilder software developed the building model. During the development of the model, it was observed that the actual energy consumption needs to be assessed, as the as... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerospace 12-pulse rectifier, autotransformer rectifier, magnetic component design, performance, standard requirements.
In this paper, a conventional 12-pulse transformer unit (CTU) and an autotransformer 12-pulse transformer unit (ATU) are compared in the view of the RTCA DO-160 standard for aircraft applications. The design of the magnetic components is proposed via a coupled FEM-circuital analysis in the time domain for an 800 Hz/2 kW system. Input AC distortion, power factor, and output DC ripple are evaluated through simulations. An accurate power loss analysis is carried out, taking into account copper losses, magnetic losses, and power losses due to power switches. The reduction in the size and weight of the ATU with respect to the CTU solution is discussed, including the need for filtering systems and the standard requirements.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decarbonisation, electrolysis, green hydrogen, levelised cost of hydrogen, national energy system, national potential, power to gas, scenario analysis, Technoeconomic Analysis.
Achieving climate neutrality requires a massive transformation of current energy systems. Fossil energy sources must be replaced with renewable ones. Renewable energy sources with reasonable potential such as photovoltaics or wind power provide electricity. However, since chemical energy carriers are essential for various sectors and applications, the need for renewable gases comes more and more into focus. This paper determines the Austrian green hydrogen potential, produced exclusively from electricity surpluses. In combination with assumed sustainable methane production, the resulting renewable gas import demand is identified, based on two fully decarbonised scenarios for the investigated years 2030, 2040 and 2050. While in one scenario energy efficiency is maximised, in the other scenario significant behavioural changes are considered to reduce the total energy consumption. A techno-economic analysis is used to identify the economically reasonable national green hydrogen potential... [more]

Kristian Fabbri, Jacopo Gaspari.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, climate-adaptive building shells, Energy Efficiency, shape-memory alloy, sustainable design.
Huge efforts have been made in recent decades to improve energy saving in the building sector, particularly focused on the role of façades. Among the explored viable solutions, climate-adaptive building shells [CABS] consider promising solutions to control solar radiation, both in terms of illuminance and heating levels, but are still piloting these solutions due to their complex designs and necessary costs. The present study aims to provide a speedy but reliable methodology to evaluate the potential impacts of adopting active/passive CABS systems during the preliminary design stage. The proposed methodology allows the evaluation and comparison, when multiple options are considered, of the effects of each solution in terms of the energy needs, thermal comfort and lighting, while reducing the required effort and time for an extensive analysis of the overall building level. This is based on the use of a “virtual test room” where different conditions and configurations can be explored. A... [more]

Keywords: 5G, antenna array, defective ground surface, future handsets, multiband antenna system, smartphone antenna.
The study and exploration of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MMIMO) and millimeter-wave wireless access technology has been spurred by a shortage of bandwidth in the wireless communication sector. Massive MIMO, which combines antennas at the transmitter and receiver, is a key enabler technology for next-generation networks to enable exceptional spectrum and energy efficiency with simple processing techniques. For massive MIMOs, the lower band microwave or millimeter-wave band and the antenna are impeccably combined with RF transceivers. As a result, the 5G wireless communication antenna differs from traditional antennas in many ways. A new concept of the MIMO tri-band hexagonal antenna array is being introduced for next-generation cellular networks. With a total scaling dimension of 150 × 75 mm2, the structure consists of multiple hexagonal fractal antenna components at different corners of the patch. The radiating patch resonates at 2.55−2.75, 3.45−3.7, and 5.65−6.05 GHz (FR1... [more]

Zhihua Lin, Zhitao Zuo, Wenbin Guo, Jianting Sun, Qi Liang, Haisheng Chen.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adjustable vaned diffusers, centrifugal compressor, impeller backside cavity, variable operating conditions.
The impeller backside cavity (IBC) is a unique structure of centrifugal compressor in compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems, which affects the aerodynamic performance of centrifugal compressor, and the angle change of the downstream coupled adjustable vaned diffusers (AVDs) will affect the flow field inside the cavity and compressor performance. This paper relies on the closed test facility of the high-power intercooling compressor to measure static pressure and static temperature at different radii on the static wall of the IBC. The coupling relationship between the IBC and compressor under variable operating conditions is analyzed, and the influence of AVDs on the internal flow in IBC is studied. The results show that static pressure and static temperature rise along the direction of increasing radius, but static temperature drops near the coupling between the impeller outlet and the cavity inlet. Under AVDs’ design angle, static pressure and static temperature at each point,... [more]

Keywords: finite difference method, first top coal caving distance (FTCD), Godavari Valley Coalfield (GVCF), internal rate of return (IRR), longwall top coal caving (LTCC), numerical analysis, sensitivity analysis, thick seam.
An extraction method for deep-seated thick seam deposits by underground mining with high resource recovery has remained a great challenge for Indian mining engineers, whereas the longwall top coal caving (LTCC) method has evolved as an effective method for various geo mining conditions in China and other counties. The percentage of top coal recovery (TCR) plays a predominant role in determining the feasibility of LTCC, which relies on the First Top Coal Caving Distance (FTCD). In this paper, the critical geotechnical parameters are identified, numerically simulated, and statistically analyzed, and the FTCD for Indian geo-mining conditions is developed and validated. A financial assessment is conducted, considering 70% top coal recovery at 85% performance level, cost of production escalated by 20% and fall in coal grade by two grades. The internal rate of return (IRR) for LTCC is 30.24% as per the sensitivity analysis where it is only 18% in single pass longwall method. This study contr... [more]

Keywords: catalytic methane pyrolysis, economic analysis, H2 production, process simulation, thermal methane pyrolysis, unit H2 production cost.
As many countries have tried to construct a hydrogen (H2) society to escape the conventional energy paradigm by using fossil fuels, methane pyrolysis (MP) has received a lot of attention owing to its ability to produce H2 with no CO2 emission. In this study, a techno-economic analysis including a process simulation, itemized cost estimation, and sensitivity and scenario analysis was conducted for the system of thermal-based and catalyst-based MP (TMP-S1 and CMP-S2), and the system with the additional H2 production processes of carbon (C) gasification and water−gas shift (WGS) reaction (TMPG-S3 and CMPG-S4). Based on the technical performance expressed by H2 and C production rate, the ratio of H2 combusted to supply the heat required and the ratio of reactants for the gasifier (C, Air, and water (H2O)), unit H2 production costs of USD 2.14, 3.66, 3.53, and 3.82 kgH2−1 from TMP-S1, CMP-S2, TMPG-S3, and CMPG-S4, respectively, were obtained at 40% H2 combusted and a reactants ratio for C-A... Design and Experiments of a Galloping-Based Wind Energy Harvester Using Quadruple Halbach Arrays
Hai Dang Le, Soon-Duck Kwon.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic, energy harvest, galloping, Halbach array, Wind.
This study aims to develop a device for harvesting electrical energy from low-speed natural wind. Four linear Halbach arrays are adopted to design a high-performance galloping harvester with the advantage of high durability and efficiency at low-frequency vibrations. The results of magnetic field analysis reveal that there are optimal sizes of the main and transit magnets of the Halbach arrays and coil to obtain the maximum magnetic flux density normal to the coil. The experimental and simulation results show that the electrical external load resistance significantly affects the vibration amplitude and the galloping onset velocity of the harvester. The results also reveal that the performance of the original design using the quadruple Halbach array was lower than that of the existing harvester because of the heavy magnet mass embedded in the tip prism. The modified design, reducing mass, improved the performance by four times compared to the original design.

Chang-Sung Jin, Chang-Min Kim, In-Jin Kim, Iksang Jang.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BLDC, commutation method, current harmonics, efficiency improvement, reduction acoustic noise.
This study focused on the efficiency improvement and acoustic noise reduction of brushless DC (BLDC) motors by reducing current harmonics using a novel BLDC commutation method. To achieve these goals, we designed an improved 150° commutation method for a three-phase permanent magnet BLDC motor that can improve the current waveform. Although the 120° commutation method is generally employed for BLDC motors, an improved 150° commutation method is introduced to operate the BLDC with increased efficiency and acoustic noise similar to a brushless AC motor. This study investigated the attributes of various commutation methods, both theoretically and experimentally, to determine the optimal commutation method. The results of this study indicate that the improved 150° commutation method is optimal in terms of harmonic attributes and reduced torque ripple, allowing it to improve motor efficiency and reduce acoustic noise.
Aspects of Selecting Appropriate Conveyor Belt Strength
Dariusz Woźniak, Monika Hardygóra.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: belt tensile strength, conveyor belt, theoretical model, transition section.
Breaks in the so-called “continuous” (unspliced) belt sections, and not in the spliced areas, are infrequent but do happen in practice. This article presents some aspects, which may account for such breaks in conveyor belts. It indicates the so-called “sensitive points” in design, especially in the transition section of the conveyor belt and in identifying the actual strength of the belt. The presented results include the influence of the width of a belt specimen on the identified belt tensile strength. An increase in the specimen width entails a decrease in the belt strength. The research involved develops a universal theoretical model of the belt on a transition section of a troughed conveyor in which, in the case of steel-cord belts, the belt is composed of cords and layers of rubber, and in the case of a textile belt, of narrow strips. The article also describes geometrical forces in the transition section of the belt and an illustrative analysis of loads acting on the belt. Attent... [more]

Vibhu Jately, Balaji Venkateswaran V., Stefan Azzopardi, Brian Azzopardi.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BESS, GHG emission, LCoE, micro-grid, PV system.
This paper discusses the simulation framework developed for an in-campus pilot micro-grid at MCAST, Malta, to enhance its efficiency and reliability. One year of real-time metered data were used to arrive at the load curves, categorize the loads as essential and non-essential ones, and decide the micro-grid domain within MCAST. The potential scenarios were modeled to observe the behavior of the present status of the micro-grid, with an increased photovoltaic (PV) generation capacity, by using an optimum battery storage system with a diesel generator of suitable capacity and finally integrating electric vehicles (EVs) to discuss the potential of vehicle to grid (V2G) operation modes. The existing building management system (BMS) of MCAST was interfaced within the micro-grid to introduce the geographic information system (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for developing an intelligent 3D model of the micro-grid. The results of the simulation framework for various potential cas... [more]
The Viability of Providing 24-Hour Electricity Access to Off-Grid Island Communities in the Philippines
Lorafe Lozano, Edward M. Querikiol, Evelyn B. Taboada.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity access, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification, socio-economic viability, techno-economic viability.
Techno-economic viability assessments of rural electrification projects, especially those that integrate renewable energy technologies, typically look at system design optimization that would yield the most favorable cost and investment scenarios. However, the true viability of these projects relies more importantly on their impact to the rural communities while ensuring positive financial returns to the project developers. This paper aims to expand the viability assessment of electrification projects in off-grid island communities in order to mainly address the apparently opposing needs of the major stakeholders at play by developing a viability assessment framework considering the techno-economic dimensions as well as the socio-economic impacts to the consumers. The analysis follows a two-phase approach, where system design optimization and financial impact calculations are done in the first phase and the socio-economic viability is accomplished in the second phase. Results suggest t... [more]
Hybrid Physics-Based Adaptive Kalman Filter State Estimation Framework

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anomaly detection, asymmetry index, Kalman Filter, load dynamics, measurement gross errors, measurement innovation.
State-of-the art physics-model based dynamic state estimation generally relies on the assumption that the system’s transition matrix is always correct, the one that relates the states in two different time instants, which might not hold always on real-life applications. Further, while making such assumptions, state-of-the-art dynamic state estimation models become unable to discriminate among different types of anomalies, as measurement gross errors and sudden load changes, and thus automatically leads the state estimator framework to inaccuracy. Towards the solution of this important challenge, in this work, a hybrid adaptive dynamic state estimator framework is presented. Based on the Kalman Filter formulation, measurement innovation analytical-based tests are presented and integrated into the state estimator framework. Gross measurement errors and sudden load changes are automatically detected, identified, and corrected, providing continuous updating of the state estimator. Towards... [more]
Changes in Thornthwaite Moisture Index and Reactive Soil Movements under Current and Future Climate Scenarios—A Case Study
Md Rajibul Karim, Md Mizanur Rahman, Khoi Nguyen, Donald Cameron, Asif Iqbal, Isaac Ahenkorah.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, expansive soils, ground movement, suction depth, Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI).
Expansive soils go through significant volume changes due to seasonal moisture variations resulting in ground movements. The ground movement related problems are likely to worsen in the future due to climate change. It is important to understand and incorporate likely future changes in design to ensure the resilience of structures built on such soils. However, there has been a limited amount of work quantifying the effect of climate change on expansive soils movement and related behaviour of structures. The Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI) is one of the commonly used climate classifiers in quantifying the effect of atmospheric boundary on soil behaviour. Using the long-term weather data and predicted future changes under different emission scenarios, a series of TMI maps are developed for South Australia. Potential changes in ground movement are then estimated for a selected area using a simplified methodology where the effect of future climate is captured through changes in TMI. Resu... [more]

Keywords: 3SSC type-A, boost converter, DC-DC converter, right-half-plane (RHP) zero, three-state switching cell (3SSC).
A detailed analysis and validation of the DC-DC boost converter based on the three-state switching cell (3SSC) type-A are presented in this paper. The study of this topology is justified by the small amount of research that employs 3SSC-A and the advantages inherent to 3SSC-based converters, such as the division of current stresses between the semiconductors, the distribution of thermal losses, and the high-density power. Therefore, a complete static analysis of the converter is described, as well as the study of all voltage and current stresses in the semiconductors, the development of a loss model in all components, and a comparison with other step-up structures. Additionally, the small-signal model validation is accomplished by comparing the theoretical frequency response and the simulated AC sweep analysis. Finally, implementing a simple controller structure, the converter is experimentally validated through a 600 W prototype, where its overall efficiency is examined for various lo... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: custom design, driving simulator tests, EMG, steering system, universal design, vehicle safety.
The subject of this article is the design of a nonstandard steering system in cars. The applied methodology takes into account universal design, ensuring the greatest possible adaptation of the steering system to potential users, and at the same time, thanks to the specific nature of the designed steering device, it also assumes a special approach allowing for individual adjustment of the steering system to the needs and limitations of drivers with lower-limb disabilities. It is implemented through the “custom design” methodology. This article presents the impact of the design features of the multifunction steering wheel on the correctness of driving, as well as the level of load on selected muscles of the upper limbs responsible for operating the steering wheel. The tests were carried out on a dynamic simulator of a motor vehicle using the electromyography (EMG) technique, which enables the measurement of muscle load. Role of Architectural Design in Creating Circadian-Effective Interior Settings
Baraa J. Alkhatatbeh, Somayeh Asadi.
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: architectural design parameters, circadian-effective lighting, human-centric lighting, standards and recommendations.
Daylight variability throughout the day makes it an ideal light source for the stimulation of humans’ circadian systems. However, the key criteria, including proper quantity, quality, and hours of access to daylight, are not always present inside the built environment. Therefore, artificial light is necessary to complement the human’s visual and non-visual needs for light. Architectural design parameters, such as window area, orientation, glazing material, and surface reflectance alter the characteristics of both daylight and artificial light inside buildings. These parameters and their impact on lighting design should be considered from the early design stages to attain a circadian-effective design. In response to this need, a design approach called Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) was introduced. HCL places humans, and their visual and non-visual needs, in the center of the design process. It manipulates the light-related factors, such as spectrum and intensity, within the built environm... [more]

Keywords: condition monitoring, current distribution, failure onset, magnetic field, reliability, silicon carbide, wire bond.
Current distribution anomaly can be used to indicate the onset of package-related failures modes in Silicon Carbide power MOSFET modules. In this paper, we propose to obtain the wire bond’s magnetic field profile using an array of Tunnel Magneto-Resistance (TMR) sensors, and characterise the small changes in the current density distribution to find the onset of the wire bond degradation processes, including wire bond lift-off, wire bond cracking, and wire bond fracture. We propose a novel condition monitoring technique where a non-galvanic high-bandwidth sensing and a reliability model monitor the health of the power switches. We designed a dedicated calibration set-up to examine the sensor array and calibrated to demonstrate the adequate sensitivity to a minimum 5% current anomaly detection in a single wire bond of the switching devices operating with 50 kHz switching frequency. We use a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental set-up to replicate wire bond-related failures in a 1200 V... [more]
