Yachen Lu, Yufan Teng, Qi Zhang, Jiaquan Dai
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, LSTM neural network, price forecasting
In this paper, a new prediction model for accurately recognizing and appropriately evaluating the trends of domestic chemical products and for improving the forecasting accuracy of the chemical products’ prices is proposed. The proposed model uses the minimum forecasting error as the evaluation objective to forecast the settlement price. Active contracts for polyethylene and polypropylene futures on the Dalian Commodity Futures Exchange for the next five days were used, the data were divided into a training set and test set through normalization, and the time window, batch processing size, number of hidden layers, and rejection rate of a long short-term memory (LSTM) network were optimized by an improved genetic algorithm (IGA). In the experiments, with respect to the shortcomings of the genetic algorithm, the crossover location determination and some gene exchange methods in the crossover strategy were improved, and the predicted results of the IGA−LSTM model were compared with those... Edgar Ricardo Oviedo-Ocaña, Jonathan Soto-Paz, Viviana Sanchez-Torres, Antoni Sánchez
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bacteria, composting, food waste, green waste, lignocellulose
Composting is a sustainable alternative for green waste (GW) valorization contributing to the circular bioeconomy. However, the processing time must be reduced and the end-product quality must be improved. This study determined the effect of the incorporation of processed food waste (PFW), unprocessed food (UPFW), sawdust (SW), phosphate rock (PR) and a specific bacterial inoculum on GW-composting process parameters and product quality. Three treatments were evaluated in 120 kg piles: (i) TA: (GW + UPFW + PFW + inoculum), (ii) TB (GW + UPFW + PFW), and (iii) TC (GW). An inoculum of Bacillus sp. and Paenibacillus sp. was incorporated in the cooling phase for TA. On the other hand, the effect of the inoculum at the laboratory scale (20 kg reactors) was compared with that found at the pilot scale (120 kg piles). The incorporation of FW, SW, PR and the inoculum increased the amount of lignocellulose biodegradation (TA: 29.1%; TB: 22.7%; TC: 18.2%), which allowed for a reduction of up to 14... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: Cassia glauca leaf extract, minced beef, natural preservative, shelf life
Minced beef is a popular meat product due to its low price and superior nutritional value. The contamination of minced beef is a significant risk for the worldwide meat market. Both natural and synthetic preservatives are used to expand the shelf life and improve the quality properties of meat. The harmful effects of synthetic preservatives make natural preservatives more appealing. Therefore, this research was performed to study the impact of different concentrations of Cassia glauca leaf extract (CGE) on increasing the shelf life of minced beef. Seventy-two minced beef samples were divided into control, 0.25, 0.5, and 1% w/w CGE treated groups. The control and treated samples were kept at 3 ± 1 °C in the refrigerator for 15 days. Minced beef samples’ sensory, chemical, and microbiological properties were assessed every three days. The gained results showed that the CGE addition effectively decreased the microbial count and maintained the minced beef’s sensory and chemical quality. Ad... [more]

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, feature extraction, frequency domain, MLP neural network, PSO, volume fraction, wavelet
What is presented in this research is an intelligent system for detecting the volume percentage of three-phase fluids passing through oil pipes. The structure of the detection system consists of an X-ray tube, a Pyrex galss pipe, and two sodium iodide detectors. A three-phase fluid of water, gas, and oil has been simulated inside the pipe in two flow regimes, annular and stratified. Different volume percentages from 10 to 80% are considered for each phase. After producing and emitting X-rays from the source and passing through the pipe containing a three-phase fluid, the intensity of photons is recorded by two detectors. The simulation is introduced by a Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP) code. After the implementation of all flow regimes in different volume percentages, the signals recorded by the detectors were recorded and labeled. Three frequency characteristics and five wavelet transform characteristics were extracted from the received signals of each detector, which were collected in... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: microfluidics, multiple emulsion, O–O coalescence, W1–W1 coalescence, W1–W2 coalescence
In water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsions several irreversible instability phenomena lead to changes. Besides diffusive processes, coalescence of droplets is the main cause of structural changes. In double emulsions, inner droplets can coalesce with each other (W1−W1 coalescence), inner droplets can be released via coalescence (W1−W2 coalescence) and oil droplets can coalesce with each other (O−O coalescence). Which of the coalescence pathways contributes most to the failure of the double emulsion structure cannot be determined by common measurement techniques. With monodisperse double emulsions produced with microfluidic techniques, each coalescence path can be observed and quantified simultaneously. By comparing the occurrence of all possible coalescence events, different hydrophilic surfactants in combination with PGPR are evaluated and discussed with regard to their applicability in double emulsion formulations. When variating the hydrophilic surfactant, the stability aga... [more]

Keywords: Bayesian inference, hazard rate, maximum likelihood estimation, maximum product spacing estimation, Modelling, recovery rate of COVID-19, Simulation, survival function, unit distribution
In 2019, a new lethal and mutant virus (COVID-19) spread around the world, causing the deaths of millions of people. COVID-19 demonstrates that scientists are involved in significant research efforts to face bacteria with less effort than that dedicated to viruses. Since then, engineers and bio-materials scientists have been trying to develop antiviral research and find a suitable effective medication. Strategies and opportunities for interference diagnostics, treatment strategies, and predicting future factors became mandatory. From a statistical point of view, estimating and modelling these factors play an important role in preventing future viral epidemics. In this article, modelling the recovery rate of COVID-19 is investigated through a new distribution which is called the unit exponential Pareto distribution. The new continuous distribution with three parameters displays a prominent level of flexibility to model decreasing, symmetric, and asymmetric data with a monotone failure r... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: char, coke breeze, iron-bearing sinters, pyrolysis, waste car tires
The metallurgical industry is seeking raw material substitutes more and more intensively in order to replace materials traditionally used in pig iron production. Research has been conducted on the use of char obtained from waste car tires via a pyrolysis process in an iron ore sintering process. The char obtained from car tires could be a potential substitute for some of the coke breeze used in the iron ore sintering process. However, the Zn and S content of the char is a major technological issue. This paper presents the results of research conducted to assess the possibility of substituting coke breeze with a commercial char from waste tires. The experiments were carried out in a laboratory stand capable of sintering 200 kg of sintering blend. The results obtained show that it is possible to replace 10 %m/m of coke breeze with waste tire char without any technological danger for sintering lines. The application of waste tire char in metallurgical processes is an example of actions th... [more]

Juan Huang, Bo Hu, Songlin Sun, Mingtao Xiao, Caiwang Peng, Hongbing Wang
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gear drives, nonlinear dynamics, revolute pair clearance, time-varying mesh stiffness
Bearings and other revolute pairs in gear drives will form clearances due to wear after working for a long time, which will aggravate the vibration and noise of the gear. Therefore, taking the gear drives with revolute pair clearance as the research object, the calculation formulas of the backlash and contact ratio is derived, and the time-varying mesh stiffness model considering the clearance is presented in this work. Then, a nonlinear dynamic model for the gear drives with revolute pair clearance is proposed by combining the backlash, contact ratio and the time-varying mesh stiffness. The effects of the clearance on the meshing stiffness, load sharing factor and nonlinear behavior are investigated. Results indicate that the revolute pair clearance weakens the meshing stiffness and increases working hours in single teeth contact area, thereby increasing the risk of premature failure of the gear drive. In addition, the revolute pair clearance has negligible effect on the nonlinear beh... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: co-pyrolysis, cotton stalk, electronic waste, kinetics, waste printed circuit board
Waste-printed circuit boards (WPCBs) account for approximately 3−6 wt% of total electronic waste. Due to their content of thermosetting materials and added brominated fire retardants, their recycling and disposal is difficult and not eco-friendly. Pyrolysis as a thermal degradation process may assist in the solution of this problem. In addition, using biomass as an additive can upgrade the bio-oil and fix bromines in the char. In this study, cotton stalk (CS) is chosen as an additive and kinetic of the pyrolysis of three samples namely: PCB, CS, and CS:PCB (50:50) were investigated by the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) at heating rates of 5, 10, and 15 K/min. Three non-isothermal methods: FWO, KAS, and Starink were found in good agreement with the TGA data; however, the FWO method was more efficient in the description of the degradation mechanism of solid-state reactions. For CS and CS:PCB (50:50), α was increased from 0.2 to 0.9 with the FWO method, and calculated Eα values were fou... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ground-coupled heat pump, heat penetration distance, hole spacing, viscous Burgers’ equation
Due to issues such as heat accumulation, the site area, and project investment, the reasonable determination of the hole spacing for heat exchangers has become one of the key design points of the ground-coupled heat pump system. Based on the definition of heat penetration in heat transfer and the research method of the inverse problem, a direct algorithm of the heat penetration distance in the aquifer was proposed using the analytical solution to the mathematical model for one-dimensional heat convection−conduction problems. Taking a vertical ground-coupled heat pump project in Hefei, Anhui Province, China, as an example, a three-dimensional hydro-thermal coupling numerical simulation model was established, and the influence radius during the refrigeration and heating periods under the action of a single borehole heat exchanger was determined. Comparing the heat penetration distance with the influence radius, the results show that the relative errors of the results obtained by the two... [more]

Keywords: ammonia oxidation reaction, NiCuOOH-NF electrode, petal-like cluster structures, sonochemical method, surface reconstruction
Direct electrochemical oxidation, as an economical and efficient method, has recently received increasing attention for ammonia-nitrogen wastewater treatment. Developing a low-cost, efficient catalytic electrode is the key to solve the problem of sluggish ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) kinetics. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Ni foam electrode coated with NiCuOOH petal-like cluster structures was prepared using a simple sonochemical method combined with a surface electrochemical reconstruction strategy. This structure has a large surface area and abundant NiCuOOH active sites, giving a good premise for extraordinary electrocatalytic activity of AOR. The results show that the maximum current density for AOR reaches 97.8 mA cm−2 at 0.60 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Additionally, 96.53% of NH4+-N removal efficiency and 63.12% of TN removal efficiency were acquired in the electrolysis system based on the NiCuOOH-NF electrode, as well as a good stability for at least... February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: capital constraint, carbon abatement, cost sharing, environmental externality
This paper studies the potential of carbon-abatement cost-sharing contracts in optimizing the joint economic−environmental benefit of a green supply chain. One-way and two-way cost-sharing contracts were investigated, respectively, in scenarios in which a capital-constrained manufacturer has a dominant downstream retailer or a dominant upstream supplier. The manufacturer obtains financing from a competitively priced bank to fulfill its production, carbon-abatement investment, and even insufficient emission permit purchase given the fact that the cap-and-trade regulation exists. Results show that in both one-way and two-way cost-sharing cases, cost sharing of carbon abatement has no effect on the manufacturer’s output or its counterparty’s wholesale price decisions; however, it improves the carbon abatement level of the supply chain. As a result, such cost-sharing of carbon abatement is proven to hamper the profit of the overall supply chain, but it improves the joint “economic-environm... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Biolacta N5, enzyme membrane reactor, galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), lactose, ultrafiltration, β-galactosidase
Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotics manufactured enzymatically from lactose as substrate. The growing GOS market facilitates the valorization of dairy by-products which represent cheap and abundant sources of lactose. Large-scale GOS production typically employs soluble enzymes in batch reactors that are commonly associated with low enzyme usability and, therefore, high operational expenditures. In this study, we investigate the possibility of recovering enzymes by ultrafiltration (UF) and reusing them in repeated reaction steps. The proposed process scheme included 24 h batch reaction steps with Biolacta N5, a commercial enzyme preparation of Bacillus circulans origin. The reaction steps were followed by UF steps to separate the carbohydrate products from the enzymes by applying a volume concentration factor of 8.6. Then, the collected biocatalysts were reused for repeated cycles by adding fresh lactose. Enzyme losses were quantified with a direct method by analyzing the und... [more]

Keywords: afucosylation, cell culture, monoclonal antibodies, partial least-squares regression (PLSR), selectivity ratio (SR), significance multivariate correlation (sMC), variable importance in projection (VIP) scores, variable importance metric
Retrospective analysis of historic data for cell culture processes is a powerful tool to develop further process understanding. In particular, deploying retrospective analyses can identify important cell culture process parameters for controlling critical quality attributes, e.g., afucosylation, for the production of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). However, a challenge of analyzing large cell culture data is the high correlation between regressors (particularly media composition), which makes traditional analyses, such as analysis of variance and multivariate linear regression, inappropriate. Instead, partial least-squares regression (PLSR) models, in combination with machine learning techniques such as variable importance metrics, are an orthogonal or alternative approach to identifying important regressors and overcoming the challenge of a highly covariant data structure. A specific workflow for the retrospective analysis of cell culture data is proposed that covers data curation, PLS... [more]

Keywords: meteorological parameter, MLP, NARX, tunnel natural wind prediction
The rational use of natural wind in extra-long tunnels for feedforward operation ventilation control can dramatically reduce tunnel operation costs. However, traditional tunnel natural wind calculation theory lacks a prediction function. This paper proposes a three-stage tunnel natural wind prediction method relying on the Yanglin Tunnel in Yunnan, China based on the massive meteorological parameters provided by the open-source national meteorological stations around the tunnel, which make up for the partial deficiency of the meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal. The multi-layer perceptron model (MLP) was used to predict the real-time meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal using the data from four national meteorological stations. The nonlinear autoregressive network model (NARX) was used to predict the meteorological parameters of the tunnel portal in the next period based on the predicted and measured real-time data. The natural wind speed in the tunnel was obtained... [more]

Keywords: hardness, high-pressure torsion, nanoindentation, pre-annealing, titanium alloys, Young’s modulus
The paper analyzes the effect of severe plastic deformation by the high-pressure torsion (HPT) on phase transformations, in particular, on the formation of the ω-phase, and on mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young’s modulus, in Ti alloys with 1.5 and 15 wt.% Mo. Both alloys were pre-annealed at 1000 °C for 24 h and quenched. The microstructure of the initial Ti−1.5 wt.% Mo alloy consisted of the α-phase and α’-martensite, and the initial Ti−15 wt.% Mo alloy contained polycrystalline β solid solution. The hardness tests of the samples were carried out under the load of 10 and 200 mN. The annealed alloys were subjected to HPT, and the micro- and nanohardness of both deformed samples increased up to ~1 GPa compared to their initial state. It turned out that the values of hardness (H) and Young’s modulus (E) depend on the applied load on the indenter: the higher the applied load, the lower H and higher E. It was also found that the HPT leads to the 30% increase in E for an allo... [more]

Keywords: farmland production efficiency, off-farm employment, U-shaped curve
The secret to ensuring food security and the growth of agricultural development is farmland production efficiency. In the context of urbanization, this means that farmers need to increase their off-farm employment behavior. The research goal of this paper is to explore whether this will have a impact on farmland production. This paper is based on the data of the China Land Economic Survey conducted by Nanjing Agricultural University and uses Tobit and other methods to conduct empirical tests. The main findings of this paper are as follows: (1) When the proportion of the household’s off-farm employment time is less than 73%, an increase in off-farm employment reduces farmland production efficiency. When the proportion of the household’s off-farm employment time exceeds 73%, an increase in off-farm employment increases the farmland production efficiency. (2) This paper eliminates the scale efficiency contribution in farmland production efficiency to obtain pure technical production effic... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: comparison, generalized laws, hybrid nanoparticle, mono nanoparticle, Prabhakar fractional derivative, ternary nanoparticle
This study deals with the modeling issues of the transport problem with a fractional operator. The fractional model with generalized Fourier’s law is discussed for Casson fluid flow over a flat surface. The dimensionless governing model is solved with the Laplace transform method, and the different comparisons are plotted from the obtained solutions. Other features of the problem have been analyzed instead of the symmetric behavior of the properties for different values of the fractional parameter. As a result, the ternary nanoparticles approach can be used to improve the fluid properties better than hybrid and mono nanoparticles. Further, it is evident that the law-based fractional model is more accurate and efficient in fitting any experimental data instead of an artificial replacement.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: PDMS membrane, perstraction, PFOA
This study represents a first time that perstraction was assessed as a process to remove perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water. In the perstraction process, PFOA permeates through a membrane from water to a solvent. The membrane used in this study was polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The experimental approach included the following: (1) measurement of partition coefficients for PFOA between water and selected solvents; (2) determination of solubility and diffusivity of the solvents in PDMS; (3) determination of the uptake of PFOA in PDMS; (4) determination of the effects of selected particles imbedded in the PDMS on PFOA uptake and solvent absorption; and (5) demonstration of the perstraction process to remove PFOA from water. PFOA preferentially partitioned to alcohols over water. In addition, ZnO and CuO particles in PDMS significantly enhanced the rate at which PFOA was absorbed in PDMS from deionized water due to ionic interactions. The perstraction of PFOA from deionized water into... [more]

The hormetic effect is a toxicological phenomenon in the soil ecosystem. The influence of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the release and activation of soil phosphorus (P) has become the focus of toxicological research. To what extent LMWOAs can regulate the hormetic effect of P release and then influence soil P nutrients is worth attention. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different types and concentrations of exogenous LMWOAs on P extraction, establish the relationship between the concentration of LMWOAs and P extraction efficiency, and calculate the hormetic parameters to understand the mechanism of types and concentrations of LMWOAs in P extraction efficiency. Four organic acids, i.e., citric, oxalic, tartaric, and malic acids, induced hormetic effects on P extraction that were concentration dependent. The relationship between LMWOAs and P extraction efficiency was explained by a quadratic polynomial equation. The critical threshold of citric acid conce... [more]
