February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: abrasion, bauxite residue, pelletization, porosity, sintering, strength, tumble
Experimental research was carried out to produce pellets from bauxite residue for the further extraction of iron and alumina. Bauxite residue and limestone with three different mixture compositions were pelletized experimentally via agglomeration followed by drying and sintering at elevated temperatures. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used for the phase and microstructural analysis, respectively. Tumble, abrasion, and breaking load tests were applied to determine the strength of the pellets. For measurement of porosity and surface area, mercury porosimetry and BET surface area methods were applied. It was found that at 1100 °C sintering temperature, all the three sintered pellet compositions have a moderate porosity and low strength, but the reverse result was found when 1200 °C sintering temperature was applied. Moreover, for the pellets sintered at 1150 °C high strength and proper porosities were obtained. In the sintered pellets, iron present in... [more]

Keywords: degradation products, hydrofluoroolefins, LC50, SF6, stability
Binary gas mixture of N2 and trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluorobut-2-ene (HFO4E) is presented as an alternative to SF6 in medium-voltage electrical equipment. Its stability was tested under different conditions. No change was observed in the gas mixture after a permanent AC voltage of 30 kV applied for two years or during the making operations with a standard load-break switch. The same behavior was obtained under dielectric tests, electrical arcs and temperature rise tests according to the IEC 62271-1:2011 standard. For all of these conditions, the concentration of HFO4E remains practically unchanged; there is no impact on the insulation properties of the system and the degradation products formed would not affect the health and the environment if there were leaks. In these studies, gas mixtures samples were analyzed by a validated methodology based on gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and thermal conductivity detectors. Finally, an OECD TG 403 acute inhalation toxicity test w... [more]
Task-Offloading and Resource Allocation Strategy in Multidomain Cooperation for IIoT
Zuojun Dai, Ying Zhou, Hui Tian, Nan Ma
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cross-domain, IIOT, MEC, resource allocation
This study proposes a task-offloading and resource allocation strategy in multidomain cooperation (TARMC) for the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) to resolve the problem of the non-uniform distribution of task computation among various cluster domain networks in the IIoT and the solidification of traditional industrial wireless network architecture, which produces low efficiency of static resource allocation and high delay in closed-loop data processing. Based on the closed-loop process of task interaction of intelligent terminals in wireless networks, the proposed strategy constructs a network model of multidomain collaborative task-offloading and resource allocation in IIoT for flexible and dynamic resource allocation among intelligent terminals, edge servers, and cluster networks. Considering the partial offloading mechanism, various tasks were segmented into multiple subtasks marked at bit-level per demand, which enabled local and edge servers to process all subtasks in paralle... February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DMAIC, quality improvement, smart water closets, water-efficient products
Water-efficient products, a key component of water-saving technology, are widely installed and utilized in all sectors of society. Due to China’s extensive and varied use of this product, advancements in effectiveness and quality will significantly enhance people’s standard of living. In recent years, manufacturers, corporate purchasers, and individual customers have given more attention to the quality of these items due to the spike in local market and export demands for water-efficient products in China. It has been a pressing problem to find a practical solution for increasing product quality in a reasonable and scientific manner. In order to build a DECIA quality improvement model for water-efficient product quality that is quantifiable and technically practical, this paper investigates how to improve the quality of smart water closets based on six-sigma management. Thus, the development of a water-efficient industry can be green and sustainable.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: enzymatic activities, industrial soil, microbial community, natural attenuation, natural soil, PAH contamination, PLFA, soil ecosystem stability
Soil microbial community plays a major role in removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from soil, and bioremediation potentially offers an attractive and economic approach to the clean-up of polluted areas. To evaluate the contribution of different microbial groups in soil PAH degradation, enzymatic activity and phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) were analysed in a mesocosm trial in three different soils (two natural and one industrial) artificially contaminated with 3- and 5-rings PAHs. The Metabolic Activity Index (MAI) was applied to investigate the microbial community stability, in terms of resistance and resilience. Gram+ and Gram- bacteria were the predominant microbial groups in all soil types. In the first stage of incubation, fungi were predominant in the industrial soil, followed by mycorrhizae and actinomycetes, indicating their stimulation after PAH addition. In the two natural soils, several groups were predominant: actinomycetes in one, fungi and mycorrhizae in t... [more]

Keywords: buoyancy, centrifugal microfluidics, centripetal pumping, lab-on-a-disc, metering
Lab-on-a-Disc (LoaD) has great potential for applications in decentralised bioanalytical testing where speed and robustness are critical. Here, a disc-shaped microfluidic chip is rotated to pump liquid radially outwards; thus, all microfluidic structures must be fitted into the available radial length. To overcome this limitation, several centripetal pumping technologies have been developed. In this work, we combine buoyancy pumping, enabled by displacing aqueous samples and reagents centripetally inwards by a dense liquid (fluorocarbon FC-40), with dissolvable film (DF) to automate a multi-step assay. The DF dissolves in the presence of water but is not in contact with the FC-40. Therefore, the FC-40 can be stored behind the DF membranes and is autonomously released by contact with the arriving aqueous sample. Using this technology, tasks such as blood centrifugation can be located on the disc periphery where ‘disc real estate’ is less valuable and centrifugal forces are higher. To de... [more]
Photo-Ordering and Deformation in Azobenzene-Containing Polymer Networks under Irradiation with Elliptically Polarized Light
Vladimir Toshchevikov, Marina Saphiannikova
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: azobenzene-containing polymers, orientation ordering, photo-active materials, polymer networks, statistical physics
Azobenzene-containing polymers (azo-polymers) have been a subject of extensive investigations during the last two and half decades, due to their remarkable ability to undergo pronounced alignment and deformation under irradiation with light. The molecular ordering and deformation in azo-polymers of various structures under irradiation with linearly polarized light was described in a series of theoretical works, based on the effect of the reorientation of azobenzene moieties due to the anisotropic character of the photoisomerization processes. In the present study, we generalize the previous orientation approach to describe the photo-alignment and deformation of azo-polymer networks under irradiation with elliptically polarized light. We demonstrate that, in general, the light-induced ordering and deformation have a biaxial symmetry defined by the polarization ellipse. Azobenzene chromophores have a tendency to align along the direction of light propagation, the orientation in the other... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: algorithm, E. coli, estimation, kinetic parameters, Simulation
The ability to create “structured models” of biological simulations is becoming more and more commonplace. Although computer simulations can be used to estimate the model, they are restricted by the lack of experimentally available parameter values, which must be approximated. In this study, an Enhanced Segment Particle Swarm Optimization (ESe-PSO) algorithm that can estimate the values of small-scale kinetic parameters is described and applied to E. coli’s main metabolic network as a model system. The glycolysis, phosphotransferase system, pentose phosphate, the TCA cycle, gluconeogenesis, glyoxylate pathways, and acetate formation pathways of Escherichia coli are represented by the Differential Algebraic Equations (DAE) system for the metabolic network. However, this algorithm uses segments to organize particle movements and the dynamic inertia weight (ω) to increase the algorithm’s exploration and exploitation potential. As an alternative to the state-of-the-art algorithm, this adju... [more]

Keywords: alkali pretreatment, biorefinery, diluted acid pretreatment, Jerusalem artichoke stalk (JAS), lignin recovery, wastewater recycling
Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) is emerging as one of the energy plants considered for biofuel production. Alkali and alkali-involved pretreatment methods have been widely used for the bioconversion of cellulosic materials due to their high sugar yield and low inhibitor release. However, the recovery and treatment of wastewater (black liquor) have been poorly studied. Here, we present a novel two-stage pretreatment process design for recycling black liquor. Jerusalem artichoke stalk (JAS) was first treated with 2% (w/v) NaOH, after which lignin was recovered by H2SO4 at pH 2.0 from the black liquor. The recycled solutions were subsequently used to treat the NaOH-pretreated JAS for the second time to dissolve hemicellulose. CO-pretreated JAS, hydrolysates, and acid-insoluble lignin were obtained after the above-mentioned two-stage pretreatment. A reducing sugar yield of 809.98 mg/g Co-pretreated JAS was achieved after 48 h at 5% substrate concentration using a cellulase do... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: advanced oxidation processes, air treatment, heterogeneous photocatalysis, recycled rubber, titanium dioxide
The immobilization of titanium dioxide, particularly commercial TiO2 P25, on the surface of recycled rubber tiles presents a solution for achieving passive air protection. A completely new purpose for tiles was obtained by addressing air pollution and related health issues. Modified rubber tiles were prepared using a sol−gel method with three different proportions of TiO2 (2, 4, and 10 g) in the solution. The nature of TiO2 nanoparticles and their respective binding on the tile surface was determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with electron dispersion X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The SEM-EDS results showed that the most successful immobilization was achieved with the lowest amount of TiO2 in the sol−gel solution. The FTIR results confirmed a band at 950 cm−1 that was attributed to the Ti-O-Si bond. The stability and environmental impact of the treated rubber substrates were investigated by a leaching test. Subject: Materials
Keywords: equalizing time, flushing calibrating hole, molecular sieve oxygen production, oxygen-generation cycle, two-bed
Molecular sieve oxygen-production technology, as a kind of air separation−oxygen production, is receiving more and more attention from every oxygen industry. The two-bed molecular sieve oxygen-production system studied in this paper can generally produce enriched gas with an oxygen concentration of more than 90%, which has the characteristics of strong applicability, high reliability, low cost and high efficiency. However, the gas oxygen concentration of a production system is greatly affected by internal and external factors such as the molecular sieve materials, atmospheric pressure and temperature environment. Through the continuous research of the molecular sieve oxygen-production system, it has been found that the oxygen cycle of the molecular sieve bed and the diameter of the washing and sizing hole also have an effect on the gas oxygen concentration of the production system. Therefore, in this paper, the two-bed molecular sieve oxygen-production device is the research object, wi... [more]

Keywords: axial fan design, axial flow fan, deep learning, deep neural network, Genetic Algorithm, Python
Axial flow fans are commonly used for a system or machinery cooling process. It also used for ventilating warehouses, factories, and garages. In the fan manufacturing industry, the demand for varying fan operating points makes design parameters complicated because many design parameters affect the fan performance. This study combines the deep neural network (DNN) with a genetic algorithm (GA) for axial flow design and development. The characteristic fan curve (P-Q Curve) can be generated when the relevant fan parameters are imported into this system. The system parameters can be adjusted to achieve the required characteristic curve. After the wind tunnel test is performed for verification, the data are integrated and corrected to reduce manufacturing costs and design time. This study discusses a small axial flow fan NACA and analyzes fan features, such as the blade root chord length, blade tip chord length, pitch angle, twist angle, fan diameter, and blade number. Afterwards, the wind... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic optimization, one-layer approach, process control
This paper reviews real-time optimization from a reinforcement learning point of view. The typical control and optimization system hierarchy depend on the layers of real-time optimization, supervisory control, and regulatory control. The literature about each mentioned layer is reviewed, supporting the proposal of a benchmark study of reinforcement learning using a one-layer approach. The multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm was applied for economic optimization and control of the isothermal Van de Vusse reactor. The cooperative control agents allowed obtaining sufficiently robust control policies for the case study against the hybrid real-time optimization approach.

Keywords: imperfect premise matching (IPM) strategy, membership-function-dependent (MFD), static output feedback (SOF) controller, T-S fuzzy systems, time-varying delays
This paper investigates the imperfect premise matching-based (IPMB) static output feedback (SOF) controller for T−S fuzzy systems with time-varying delays. Firstly, by employing integral inequality techniques, the membership-function-independent fuzzy SOF design methods in terms of LMIs are presented based on imperfect premise matching (IPM) strategy. The obtained stabilization conditions do not contain equality constraints, and the output matrices do not have rank constraints. Secondly, some suitable relaxation variables are employed, and more relaxed membership-function-dependent (MFD) stabilization conditions are obtained by considering the local boundary information of membership functions (MFs). Finally, two simulation examples are given to show the progressiveness of the proposed methods in this paper.

Sn-Pd electrocatalysts with a constant atomic ratio of 60 at.% Sn-40 at.% Pd suitable for potential application in direct ethanol fuel cells were synthesized using a novel two-step electrodeposition method. First, Sn was electrodeposited in various forms of dendrites, from spear-like and needle-like to individual fern-like dendrites to a network of intertwined fern-like dendrites, by varying the cathodic potential and then performing electrodeposition of Pd at a constant current density in the second step. A morphological and elemental analysis of Sn and Sn-Pd electrocatalysts was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, while the size of Sn dendrites was analyzed using the particle size distribution (PSD) method. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry were applied in order to study the catalytic behavior of Sn-Pd electrocatalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR),... [more]
Particle Scale Insights into a KG-Pharma RoTab Tablet Press Feed-Frame System Using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) Modeling

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), discrete element method (DEM), kg-pharma RoTab tablet press, over lubrication, particle attrition, particle traveled distance, residence time, segregation, shearing of particles
In the pharmaceutical industry, tablets are a common dosage form. As part of the manufacturing process, powder in a tablet press passes through a feeding system called the feed-frame before reaching the die cavity. Under different manufacturing conditions (e.g., paddle speed, turret speed), issues such as segregation of powder blend components, over lubrication, and drug particle attrition often occur in the tablet press feed-frame, which affect the final drug product quality. Therefore, developing a particle-scale understanding of powder behavior in a feed-frame is essential. This paper used the discrete element method (DEM) to study powder flow in the feed-frame of a kg-pharma RoTab tablet press. Simulation results show that an increase in paddle speed has less effect on tablet mass than turret speed and that an increase in turret speed reduces tablet mass and increases variability in the tablet mass. The effect of paddle speed and turret speed on the API content in the tablet is sma... [more]

Nitrates and phosphates, found in fertilizers, are the most common eutrophication-causing agents. Douglas fir biochar (BC), a syngas byproduct, was treated with different Al/Mg ratios of sulfate (5% w/w metal loading) followed by an NaOH treatment. The greatest phosphate uptake at 25 °C and pH 7 was attributed to the composite with a Mg/Al 2:1 ratio prepared at pH 13 (AMBC). Batch AMBC phosphate uptake was optimized for initial pH, equilibrium time, temperature, and initial phosphate concentration. Phosphate removal following pseudo-2nd-order kinetics and increases gradually before reaching a max at pH 11, with 95% phosphate uptake in 15 mins. The Sips isotherm model provided the best sorption data fit resulting in a 42.1 mg/g capacity at 25 °C and pH 11. Endothermic and spontaneous adsorption were determined using van ’t Hoff’s plots. BET, XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and EDS were used to characterize the biochar before and after phosphate sorption. Used AMBC has the potential to be exploited... [more]
Liquid Loading of Horizontal Gas Wells in Changbei Gas Field

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Changbei gas field, horizontal gas well, liquid loading, water source analysis
The Changbei gas field, which initially exhibited high gas-production performance, is dominated by large-displacement horizontal wells. With the decrease in reservoir pressure, the liquid loading in the gas well is currently severe, and production has been rapidly decreasing. Thus, recognizing the gas-well liquid loading to maintain stable gas-well production is necessary. A method was established to identify the water source of the liquid loading in the Changbei gas field. First, formation water and condensate water were identified based on the mineralization of the recovered water and the mass concentration of Cl− and K+ + Na+, and then the condensate content of the water produced in the gas well was qualitatively evaluated. The water−gas ratio curve for the gas well was plotted to determine whether the produced water was edge-bottom water, pore water, or condensate. Then a method was established to distinguish the start time of liquid loading in the gas well using a curve depicting... [more]

Keywords: coal slime filter cake, filtration time, pore structure, solidification
The accurate determination of the coal slime filter cake pore structure has always been a problem in the field of solid−liquid separation. An innovative measurement method for the pore structure of filter cake after filtration dehydration of coal slime water, including the preparation of coal slime filter cake, the solidification of the filter cake, and the preparation and measurement of test filter cake, was established in this paper. Epoxy resin and curing agent can ensure the strength of the filter cake, and red colorant can realize the accurate separation of coal particles and pores. The most suitable perfusate consists of epoxy resin, red colorant, and curing reagent, and the optimal ratio is 12:3:5. The application of the method to the study of the effect of filtration time on the coal slime filter cake pores shows that the modified method is effective. At the initial stage of filtration, intergranular pores formed by coarse particles are the main pores. With increasing filtratio... [more]

Keywords: African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), cascaded controller, load frequency control, renewable energy sources, two-area system
Power systems have recently faced significant challenges due to the increased penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) such as frequency deviation due to fluctuations, unpredictable nature, and uncertainty of this RES. In this paper, a cascaded controller called (1+PD)-PID is proposed to reduce the influence of RES uncertainties on the system and to maintain the system’s reliability during fluctuations. The proposed controller is a combination of (1+PD) and PID controllers in order. The output signal of the (1+PD) controller along with the frequency deviation and the power difference between adjacent areas are used as inputs to the PID controller to create the load reference signal. The parameters of the suggested controller are optimally tuned using the African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) to ensure the best performance of the controller. A two-area interconnected system with non-reheat thermal power units combined with RES such as solar and wind energy is modeled using... [more]

Keywords: 3D printing, ceramic, debinding, digital light processing, sintering
Ceramics have excellent properties such as hardness and thermal and chemical stability. Therefore, researchers have studied the use of 3D printing to produce complex shapes in tools and structural applications. The debinding and sintering processes for ceramic composite materials manufactured using digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology were studied. The slurry used for DLP 3D printing requires debinding and sintering, as it contains ceramics and binders. Therefore, the debinding and sintering processes were measured by TG-DSC curves, and the changes in material characteristics were evaluated by setting the debinding holding time (4, 5, and 6 h) and sintering temperature (1100, 1200, and 1300 °C) as parameters. After debinding for 6 h, the density of the ceramic sintered at 1300 °C was 1.36 g/cm2; the linear shrinkage was 22.1%/21.6%/28.5% along the x, y, and z axes, respectively; and the bending strength was 8.58 MPa. As a result of this study, we developed an optimized... [more]

It has been suggested that melanin could be one of the bioactive factors responsible for the immunostimulatory properties of the plant. The biological functions of melanin pigments are closely related to their chemical composition and structural features. The aim of this study was to characterize the melanin from Echinacea purpurea based on the analysis of thermal degradation products of the well-purified pigment extracted from the dried herb. The melanin was pyrolyzed, and the resulting products were separated by gas chromatography and identified using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer operating in full scan and multiple reaction monitoring modes. Three groups of marker products were detected in the melanin pyrolysate: polyphenol derivatives, nitrogen-containing heterocycles devoid of sulfur, and benzothiazines/benzothiazoles. This suggests that E. purpurea produces t... [more]
