Control of Precalciner Temperature in the Cement Industry: A Novel Method of Hammerstein Model Predictive Control with ISSA
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ARX, CNN-GRU-attention, GPC, Hammerstein model, ISSA, Model Predictive Control
As the most critical equipment in the pre-calcination process of dry cement production, the temperature of the precalciner is an essential factor affecting the quality of cement. However, the cement calcination system is time-delayed, nonlinear, and multi-disturbance, which makes it difficult to predict and control the precalciner temperature. In this study, a deep learning-based Hammerstein model is proposed, and a model predictive control system is built to predict and control the precalciner temperature. In the prediction model, the CNN-GRU network architecture is used to extract the operating states of the precalciner, and an attention mechanism is employed to find and emphasize the important historical information in the extracted states. Then, an ARX model is built to predict the temperature of the precalciner using the extracted operating state information. The complex nonlinear model solution in the control system is formed into a linear control problem and an inverse solution... [more]

Hybrid Techniques of Analyzing MRI Images for Early Diagnosis of Brain Tumours Based on Hybrid Features
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: ANN, brain tumours, CNN, FFNN, handcrafted features, MRI, SVM
Brain tumours are considered one of the deadliest tumours in humans and have a low survival rate due to their heterogeneous nature. Several types of benign and malignant brain tumours need to be diagnosed early to administer appropriate treatment. Magnetic resonance (MR) images provide details of the brain’s internal structure, which allow radiologists and doctors to diagnose brain tumours. However, MR images contain complex details that require highly qualified experts and a long time to analyse. Artificial intelligence techniques solve these challenges. This paper presents four proposed systems, each with more than one technology. These techniques vary between machine, deep and hybrid learning. The first system comprises artificial neural network (ANN) and feedforward neural network (FFNN) algorithms based on the hybrid features between local binary pattern (LBP), grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithms. The second system comprises pre-t... [more]

Modeling and Simulation of an Industrial-Scale 525 MWth Petcoke Chemical Looping Combustion Power Plant
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CCS, CLC, deNOx, deSOx, power plant, solid fuel
This paper presents the modeling and simulation of an industrial-scale chemical looping combustion (CLC) power plant, including all process units (reactors, flue gas treatment units, heat integration, steam cycle, and CO2 compression train). A model of a 525 MWth CLC power plant was built using a rigorous representation of the solid fuel and oxygen carrier. Petcoke was considered the main fuel of interest in this study, and it is compared with other solid fuels. The flue gas compositions obtained with the model show that cleanup units are mandatory to comply with CO2 quality requirements. High levels of flue gas treatment, including 97.1% deNOx and 99.4% deSOx, are needed to achieve typical specifications for captured CO2. This is mainly due to the high level of contaminants in the fuel, but also to the absence of nitrogen in the CLC flue gas, thus resulting in higher concentrations for all substances. The high level of flue gas treatment is thus one of the important challenges for sol... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anatase, hydrothermal synthesis, photocatalytic degradation, silver nanoparticles
A photocatalyst comprised of Ag nanoparticles dispersed on an anatase matrix has been prepared using a simple hydrothermal method without additional thermal treatment. The prepared material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption−desorption isotherms. The prepared catalyst activity was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of C.I. Reactive Violet 2 (RV2) aqueous solution under UVA and visible light illumination. SEM revealed the non-uniform dispersion of silver particles throughout the matrix composed of fine particles. According to XRD analysis, the matrix was composed of pure anatase with a crystallite size of 8 nm calculated through the Scherrer equation. HRTEM micrograph analysis showed that anatase nanoparticles possess a spherical morphology and a narrow size distribution with an average particle size of 8 nm with more active anatase {100... [more]

Effect of Nb Content on High-Temperature Strength and Precipitates of Nb-Containing Steel
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbides, carbonitrides, precipitation behavior, precipitation thermodynamic, second-phase particle
Reasonable control of the content of niobium (Nb) in a steel slab is of great significance to improve the strength of the slab and the regularity of precipitation of precipitates. In this study, the high-temperature strength and precipitates of the same steel with four different Nb contents (A: 0.006%, B: 0.031%, C: 0.050%, D: 0.065%) were tested and analyzed. The results show that when the Nb content is 0.031%, the tensile strength and yield strength of the steel reach the ideal state; the two-phase particles that precipitated in the Q355GJ steel after heat treatment are mainly square- and star-shaped (Ti, Nb) (C, N) composite precipitates, and their amount increases with the increase in Nb content. Most of the two-phase particles (84%) precipitated in the steel with the Nb content of 0.031% are smaller than 80 nm, and the continuous increase in the Nb content cannot increase the precipitation amount of the two-phase particles in the steel, but can increase the size of the two-phase p... A Study on the Application of Recycled Concrete Powder in an Alkali-Activated Cementitious System
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alkali-activated slag, hydration heat analysis, mechanical properties, rheological properties
In this paper, recycled concrete powder (RCP) was used as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in an alkali-activation system. The contents of RCP in the cementitious materials were 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, respectively. The fluidity, rheological properties and mechanical properties were tested, while the effects of RCP on the hydration properties of the alkali-activated system were studied by XRD, SEM-EDS, thermogravimetric analysis and the heat of hydration. The results show that the addition of RCP improves the fluidity of alkali-activated slag cementitious materials and changes the rheological index of paste. The change is greatest when the RCP content is 30%, which is 8.5% higher than that without RCP. With the increase in RCP content, the compressive strength of alkali-activated slag cementitious materials first increases and then decreases. The optimum compressive strength was attained with an RCP of 10%. The addition of RCP has little effect on the types of alkali-acti... [more]

Insight into the Processing, Gelation and Functional Components of Tofu: A Review
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: functional component, gelation, isoflavone, processing, rheological properties, texture, tofu
Soybeans are a good source of protein and functional nutrition for humans and are used in the production of many foods, such as soymilk and tofu, which are popular in Asia. Soymilk is a beverage with a milky appearance and is produced by grinding soybeans in water; this raw soymilk is then filtered and heated. Soymilk can be used to produce tofu, a gelatinous food, in a process that generally involves coagulating, forming, and pressing soymilk. Tofu is also a source of functional ingredients, such as isoflavones, that have received much attention for their antioxidant properties. These isoflavones bind to soy protein to form soy protein−isoflavone complexes in tofu. In this review, we examined the processing, gelation and functional components of tofu. First, we introduced novel processing technologies (such as thermal and nonthermal processing) and hydrocolloids that affect the rheological property and texture of tofu. Then, because the coagulation and gelation of soymilk are importan... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorbed and free gas ratio, coalbed methane, free gas, lost gas, time of loss, USBM method
The gas loss time during the deep coalbed coring process is long. The measured desorption curve does not meet the application conditions for the classical United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) method. However, the industry still lacks a reliable interpretation method, which affects identifying deep coalbed methane reserves and optimizing sweet spots. (Method) The classical double-porosity and double-permeability theoretical model was adopted, and the influence of reservoir permeability, water saturation, and temperature on gas output in the coalbed desorption process was considered. Based on the measured field desorption data of the P1 sample of the No. 8 coal in the Benxi Formation on the eastern margin of Ordos, the entire process for the deep coalbed gas content test was numerically simulated. (Results) The simulation results show that the lost gas in the P1 sample accounts for 24.7% of the total gas, reaching 8.64 m3/t, including 18.81% of loss in wellbore lifting and 5.88% of loss... A PBM-Based Procedure for the CFD Simulation of Gas−Liquid Mixing with Compact Inline Static Mixers in Pipelines
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bubble size, Computational Fluid Dynamics, mass transfer coefficient, oxygen transfer rate, population balance model, static mixers
A compact static mixer for gas−liquid dispersion in pipelines is studied in this paper with a Reynolds averaged two fluid model approach. A procedure based on the lumped parameter solution of a population balance model is applied to obtain the bubble Sauter mean diameter needed to model the interphase forces. The gas distribution in the pipe is analyzed in two different operative conditions and the efficiency of the static mixer is assessed in terms of the gas homogeneity in the pipe section, with low coefficients of variations being obtained. A computational model to obtain the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, kLa, developed for partially segregated systems is applied finding kLa values comparable to those typically obtained with other static mixers. The proposed computational model allows us to locally analyze the oxygen transfer rate by observing the limitations due to gas accumulation behind the body of the static mixer, which leads to the local depletion of the driving force.... Deep Transfer Learning for Approximate Model Predictive Control
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: approximate model predictive control, deep learning, Model Predictive Control, transfer learning
Transfer learning is a machine learning technique that takes a pre-trained model that has already been trained on a related task, and adapts it for use on a new, related task. This is particularly useful in the context of model predictive control (MPC), where deep transfer learning is used to improve the training of the MPC by leveraging the knowledge gained from related controllers. One way in which transfer learning is applied in the context of MPC is by using a pre-trained deep learning model of the MPC, and then fine-tuning the controller training for a new process automation task. This is similar to how an equipment operator quickly learns to manually control a new processing unit because of related skills learned from controlling the prior unit. This reduces the amount of data required to train the approximate MPC controller, and also improves the performance on the target system. Additionally, learning the MPC actions alleviates the computational burden of online optimization ca... [more]
