Review of Flow-Matching Technology for Hydraulic Systems
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: consumption reduction, energy saving, flow matching, load sensitivity, negative flow control, positive flow control
The flow-matching problem of hydraulic systems is an important factor affecting the working performance and energy saving of hydraulic systems. According to the different flow-matching mechanisms, the flow-matching technology of hydraulic systems can be divided into three categories: positive flow-control technology, negative flow-control technology, and load-sensitive control technology. In this paper, the working mechanism of flow-matching technology and the cause of energy loss are analyzed, and the research results of flow matching are introduced from two aspects of energy saving and consumption reduction and system performance improvement. In the direction of energy saving and consumption reduction, the purposes of energy saving and consumption reduction are achieved by means of multi-way valve commutation, independent inlet and outlet control, parallel replacement of shuttle valve by a cylinder piston rod controlled by pilot pressure, change of hydraulic resistance of a pressure... Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Polyphenols from Olive Pomace: Scale Up from Laboratory to Pilot Scenario
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: olive pomace, polyphenols, revalorization, ultrasound-assisted extraction
Power ultrasound application has been proven to intensify the extraction of biocompounds from plant materials. In this work, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of polyphenols from olive pomace (OP) has been studied at three different scales: laboratory (batch, 400 W, 0 barg), medium (continuous, 1000 W, 1.0 barg), and pilot (continuous, 2000 W, 1.0 barg) taking into consideration the influence of technological parameters: extraction time (s), solvent to solid ratio (mL/g), mixture pH, and acoustic parameters: amplitude (µm), intensity (W/cm2), and applied energy (Wh). A central composite design was used to optimize the UAE at laboratory scale (0.2 kg). The optimal conditions were: time: 490 s; ratio: 2.1 mL H2O/g OP; pH: 5.6 at an acoustic amplitude of 46 µm for a maximum extraction yield of 3.6 g GAE/L of extract. At medium scale (2.2 kg) the UAE was carried out using amplitudes from 41 to 57 µm. The effect of the pressure (1.0 barg) on the UAE was positive, in terms of higher e... [more]

Effects of Blade Suction Side Modification on Internal Flow Characteristics and Hydraulic Performance in a PIV Experimental Centrifugal Pump
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: blade trailing edge modification, nominalized local Euler head distribution, particle image velocimetry, slip factor
In this paper, the effects of blade trailing edge (TE) profile modification of the suction side on the internal flow and hydraulic performance in a low-specific speed centrifugal pump are investigated through particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis. Three impellers with different blade trailing edge profiles named original trailing edge (OTE), arc trailing edge 1 (ATE1), and arc trailing edge 2 (ATE2) are designed for PIV experiments. Results show that blade trailing edge modification of the suction side can significantly change the flow pattern, affecting the hydraulic performance of the model pumps. There is a definite counterclockwise backflow vortex near the suction side of OTE at deep-low flow rate, resulting in a decrease in the uniformity of the flow field at the outlet and the hydraulic performance. ATE1 with a reasonable larger blade outlet angle has the best flow field, and the head and efficiency are increased by about 1.2% and 8%, respectively under the same working condi... [more]

Waste Feathers Processing to Liquid Fertilizers for Sustainable Agriculture—LCA, Economic Evaluation, and Case Study
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: assessment, cayenne pepper, economic, environmental, hydrolysate, life cycle, nitrate substitute, poultry
The poultry meat industry generates about 60 million tons of waste annually. However, such waste can serve as a cheap material source for sustainable liquid fertilizers or biostimulant production. Moreover, its practical potential associated with the circular economy is evident. One of the options for waste feather reprocessing is to use a hydrolysis process, whose operating parameters vary depending on the waste material used. The better the quality of the waste feathers, the less energy is needed; moreover, a higher yield of amino acids and peptides can be achieved. These are the main operational parameters that influence the overall environmental and economic performance of the hydrolysis process. The assessment of process operational environmental aspects confirmed that the environmental impacts of hydrolysate production are highly dependent on the amount of electricity required and its sources. This fact influences the midpoint and the endpoint impacts on the observed environmenta... [more]

Numerical Investigation of Flow Characteristics for Gas−Liquid Two−Phase Flow in Coiled Tubing
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: coiled tubing, friction pressure drop, gas–liquid two-phase flow, phase distribution, velocity distribution
Coiled tubing (CT) is widely used for horizontal well fracturing, squeeze cementing, and sand and solid washing in the oil and gas industry. During CT operation, a gas−liquid two-phase flow state appears in the tubing. Due to the secondary flow, this state produces a more extensive flow-friction pressure loss, which limits its application. It is crucial to understand the gas−liquid flow behavior in a spiral tube for frictional pressure drop predictions in the CT technique. In this study, we numerically investigated the velocity distribution and phase distribution of a gas−liquid flow in CT. A comparison of experimental data and simulated results show that the maximum average error is 2.14%, verifying the accuracy of the numerical model. The gas and liquid velocities decrease first and then rise along the axial direction due to the effect of gravity. Due to the difference in the gas and liquid viscosity, i.e., the flow resistance of the gas and liquid is different, the gas−liquid slip v... [more]

Investigation of Impulse and Continuous Discharge Characteristics of Large-Capacity Lithium-Ion Batteries
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge characteristics, equivalent circuit, lithium-ion battery, simulation model
Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most popular and efficient energy storage devices. In this paper, the characteristics of high-capacity lithium-iron-phosphate batteries during the impulse and long-term operation modes of batteries with different levels of the discharge current are considered. A modified DP-model is proposed. The novelty of the model is the possibility to calculate the activation polarization parameters for different discharge currents. The state of charge is estimated using a high-order polynomial. Based on the developed model, transient processes with rapid load changes and the dependence of the battery voltage on the state of charge were obtained. Here, the model is intended to be used for the design of energy storage systems. The results showed that the DP-model is reliable under the tested conditions and can be used for the considered application.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: antimicrobial peptides, lactoferricin B, mIFc2 co-expression, staphylococcus aureus transferase SrtA fusion expression
The coding region for the sortase A (SrtA) of Staphylococcus aureus was fused at the N-terminus of LfcinB. The SrtA-LfcinB fusion protein in E. coli C43(DE3) was expressed with the expected sizes of 21 kDa and 38 kDa by pET21b-SrtA-LfcinB and pET32-1SrtA-LfcinB constructs, respectively. Increased levels of the TrxA-His-SrtA-SrtA-LfcinB fusion protein were detected by the pET32-3SrtA-LfcinB construct having three expression cassettes. LfcinB is released from the expressed SrtA-LfcinB protein by SrtA self-cleavage which is induced in the presence of Ca2+. The antibacterial activity was detected after SrtA-mediated cleavage of LfcinB. Furthermore, to reduce the antimicrobial peptide toxicity to the E. coli host, the human interferon-γ (hIFN-γ) sequences were mutated into a negatively charged mIFc2 protein (7 kDa), which was co-expressed with LfcinB in an insoluble form. The yield of LfcinB was elevated while changing the gene order of LfcinB and mIFc2 (pET21b-fLfcinB-bmIFc2). Furthermore,... [more]

Air pollution is accountable for various long-term and short-term respiratory diseases and even deaths. Air pollution is normally associated with a decreasing life expectancy. Governments have been implementing strategies to improve air quality. However, natural events have always played an important role in the concentration of air pollutants. In Australia, the lockdown period followed the Black Summer of 2019−2020 and coincided with the season of prescribed burns. This paper investigates the changes in the concentration of criteria pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulphur dioxide. The air quality data for the lockdown period in 2020 was compared with the pre-lockdown period in 2020 and with corresponding periods of previous years from 2016 to 2019. The results were also compared with the post-lockdown scenario of 2020 and 2021 to understand how the concentration levels changed due to behavioural changes and a lack of background events. Development and Validation of an Artificial Neural-Network-Based Optical Density Soft Sensor for a High-Throughput Fermentation System
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial neural network, biopharmaceuticals, Fermentation, high-throughput, microbioreactor system, optical density (OD), recombinant protein, soft sensor
Optical density (OD) is a critical process parameter during fermentation, this being directly related to cell density, which provides valuable information regarding the state of the process. However, to measure OD, sampling of the fermentation broth is required. This is particularly challenging for high-throughput-microbioreactor (HT-MBR) systems, which require robotic liquid-handling (LiHa) systems for process control tasks, such as pH regulation or carbon feed additions. Bioreactor volume is limited and automated at-line sampling occupies the resources of LiHa systems; this affects their ability to carry out the aforementioned pipetting operations. Minimizing the number of physical OD measurements is therefore of significant interest. However, fewer measurements also result in less process information. This resource conflict has previously represented a challenge. We present an artificial neural-network-based soft sensor developed for the real-time estimation of the OD in an MBR syst... [more]
