April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic emission (AE), magnetoacoustic effects, partial discharge (PD), power transformer testing
In this paper, the research methodology and the results of the analysis carried out using the acoustic emission (AE) and thermal imaging for a selected oil power transformer are presented. The basis for the research, by means of the AE method, was the author’s patented research method. The AE descriptor maps on the side walls of the tested transformer along with the location of areas with increased AE activity and an analysis of the properties of AE signals recorded at the measurement points located in these areas have been performed. The results showed no partial discharges that could threaten further operation of the tested transformer as well as three areas where increased magnetoacoustic emission occurred. Thermal imaging studies were carried out in the 7.5 μm < λ < 13 μm band. Three areas were located on the calculated thermograms: the entire upper surface of the transformer tank and two areas on the side walls of the tested transformer in which increased IR radiation occurr... , Poverty and Energy Consumption: Personal Carbon Accounts and Households in Poverty
Martin Burgess, Mark Whitehead
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy and choice, just transitions, low-income energy choices, personal carbon allowances, poverty
Complex relations exist between issues of poverty, responsibility and just transitions toward reduced household energy use. One proposed transitional instrument is Personal Carbon Accounts (PCAs) which provide equal per capita carbon allowances and increase costs for additional usage. Previously modelled PCAs show that a third of households in poverty must curtail usage or pay more for some of their fuel, hitherto making PCAs ethically and politically untenable. Using the UK’s “Understanding Society” database, average per capita carbon allowances and—using occupancy data—the hypothetical allowance each household would receive within a PCA scheme are calculated. Occupancy levels, equivalised incomes and conversion of expenditure to carbon emissions permit analysis of households emitting more or less carbon compared to their allocation. We demonstrate that households emitting greater than average levels of CO2 do so mainly for lifestyle reasons, irrespective of income. Any calculation of... [more]

Keywords: enhanced oil recovery (EOR), oil displacement, RF, RRF, scleroglucan (SG), sulfonated polyacrylamide (ATBS)
Viscosity losses and high degradation factors have a drastic impact over hydrolyzed polyacrylamides (HPAM) currently injected, impacting the oil recovery negatively. Previous studies have demonstrated that biopolymers are promising candidates in EOR applications due to high thermochemical stability in harsh environments. However, the dynamic behavior of a biopolymer as scleroglucan through sandstone under specific conditions for a heavy oil field with low salinity and high temperature has not yet been reported. This work presents the rock−fluid evaluation of the scleroglucan (SG at 935 mgL−1) and sulfonated polyacrylamide (ATBS at 2500 mgL−1) to enhance oil recovery in high-temperature for heavy oils (212 °F and total dissolved solid of 3800 mgL−1) in synthetic (0.5 Darcy) and representative rock samples (from 2 to 5 Darcy) for a study case of a Colombian heavy oilfield. Dynamic evaluation at reservoir conditions presents a scenario with stable injectivity after 53.6 PV with a minimal... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electromagnetic characteristics, Gramme winding, power density, tubular permanent-magnet linear generator
A tubular permanent-magnet linear generator is suitable for direct drive wave energy conversion owing to its simple structure, easy maintenance and high efficiency. In this study, a novel Gramme winding tubular permanent-magnet linear generator (GW) is designed to increase power density. First, the structure of the Gramme winding and concentrated winding tubular permanent-magnet linear generator is introduced and the operation principle of the generator is analysed. Second, the initial parameters of GW are determined based on the similar overall dimensions to those of the concentrated winding tubular permanent-magnet linear generator. Third, the air gap flux density, external characteristics, voltage regulation, output power, and loss of the two generators are compared. Finally, the DC load capacities of the two generators are compared based on a three-phase full-control bridge rectifying circuit. The results show that the GW has a higher power density than the latter.

Keywords: activating additive, anthracite, combustion, copper acetate, copper nitrate, ignition, semi-coke
The process of anthracite and its semi-coke combustion in the presence of 5 wt.% (in terms of dry salt) additives of copper salts Cu(NO3)2 and Cu(CH3COO)2 was studied. The activating additives were introduced by an incipient wetness procedure. The ignition and combustion parameters for coal samples were examined in the combustion chamber at the heating medium temperatures (Tg) of 600−800 °C. The composition of the gaseous combustion products was controlled using an on-line gas analyzer. The fuel modification with copper salts was found to reduce the ignition delay time on average, along with a drop in the minimum ignition temperature Tmin by 138−277 °C. With an increase in Tg temperature, a significant reduction in the ignition delay time for the anthracite and semi-coke samples (by a factor of 6.7) was observed. The maximum difference in the ignition delay time between the original and modified samples of anthracite (ΔTi = 5.5 s) and semi-coke (ΔTi = 5.4 s) was recorded at a Tg temper... [more]

Keywords: degradation dependence, lithium-ion battery packs, unbalanced state
Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in the energy field due to their high efficiency and clean characteristics. They provide more possibilities for electric vehicles, drones, and other applications, and they can provide the higher requirements necessary for the reliability of battery pack systems. However, it is easy for a battery pack to be unbalanced because of the dependence between the cells. The unbalanced state will make the degradation process more complex and cause abnormal discharge parameters, which brings challenges in the analysis of the state of health (SOH) of battery packs. In order to study the degradation process in the unbalanced condition, in this study, a degradation test of four different configurations of battery packs was designed and implemented, and the degradation process was primarily studied from the perspective of dependence. First, the degradation characteristics and dependency degree of different configurations of the unbalanced state were discussed. Se... [more]

Keywords: battery electric vehicle, charging infrastructure, electric mobility, load management, multi-apartment building, private charging, urban area, zero emission mobility
Interest in and demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is growing strongly due to the increasing awareness of climate change and specific decarbonization goals. One of the largest challenges remains the provision of large-scale, efficient charging infrastructure in multi-apartment buildings. Successful load management (LM) for BEV charging directly influences the technical requirements and the economic and environmental aspects of charging infrastructure and can prevent costly distribution grid expansion. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate potential LM approaches in multi-apartment buildings to avoid an increase in existing electricity demand peaks with BEV diffusion. Using our model parameters, off-peak charging achieved a 40% reduction in the building’s demand peak at 100% BEV diffusion compared to uncontrolled charging and reduced the correlation between BEV charging and the national share of thermal power generation. The most efficient charging capacity in the pri... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condenser heat utilization, dehumidification, evaporator location, hybrid solid desiccant cooling, system performance
The packaged terminal air conditioning with reheat (PTACR) system, as a commonly used dehumidification system, faces the problem of extra energy consumption in the deep-cooling and reheating processes. Therefore, different heat pump assisted hybrid solid desiccant cooling (HPDC) systems were proposed and their characteristics were investigated via EnergyPlus simulations. The system energy efficiency presents an upward trend with the increase in outdoor temperature and humidity. A high-humidity climate leads to the improvement of system performance. The dehumidification performance of the desiccant wheel in the HPDC system declines when outdoor humidity increases. Compared with the PTACR system, the energy consumption of the HPDC system in which the evaporator was placed upstream of the desiccant wheel is reduced by 36%, 66%, and 64%, respectively, under different high-humidity climates. The system maintained the indoor environment within the comfort zone, and eliminated the need for a... [more]

The organic Rankine cycle is a mature small-scale power generation technology for harnessing low- to mid-temperature heat sources. However, the low efficiency of the cycle still hinders its widespread implementation. To optimize the cycle’s performance, it is crucial to identify the source and magnitude of losses within each component of the cycle. This study, thus, aims to investigate the irreversible losses and their effect on the performance of the system. A prototype organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with the exhaust of a diesel engine as the heat source was developed to experimentally investigate the system and ascertain the losses. The experiments were performed at steady-state conditions at different evaporation pressures from 1300 kPa to 1600 kPa. The exergy loss and exergetic efficiency of the individual component and the overall system was estimated from the experimentally measurement of the pressure, temperature, and mass flow rate. The results indicate that the exergy losses of t... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emission, electrification, energy system analysis, primary energy consumption, sustainable energy system, transport
Increasing awareness of climate issues and environmental policy has been a key factor behind the continuous transition of energy systems at different levels. This paper aimed to analyse the energy system of Viken county, located in Norway. An energy system model using the energy system analysis tool EnergyPLAN was developed. Based on the reference year 2018, two future scenarios which focus on changes in the transport sector for the year 2030 and 2050 were designed. Besides changes in the transport sector, the integration of renewable energy sources is considered in the future scenarios. The results of the analysis regarding the future scenario shows substantial CO2 reduction as a result of energy-carrier switching within the transport sector. The integration of new energy sources, in this case, solar PV and wind power, helps to offset increased import dependency. The primary energy supply decrease and the share of renewable energy increases significantly.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fractional derivatives, natural gas hydrate, numerical simulation, seismic modeling
Simulation of the seismic wave propagation in natural gas hydrate (NGH) is of great importance. To finely portray the propagation of seismic wave in NGH, attenuation properties of the earth’s medium which causes reduced amplitude and dispersion need to be considered. The traditional viscoacoustic wave equations described by integer-order derivatives can only nearly describe the seismic attenuation. Differently, the fractional time derivative seismic wave-equation, which was rigorously derived from the Kjartansson’s constant-Q model, could be used to accurately describe the attenuation behavior in realistic media. We propose a new fractional finite-difference method, which is more accurate and faster with the short memory length. Numerical experiments are performed to show the feasibility of the proposed simulation scheme for NGH, which will be useful for next stage of seismic imaging of NGH.

Keywords: electro-thermal model, finite element method, mission profile, photovoltaic, power electronics, thermo-mechanical stress, wide-bandgap
Integrating photovoltaic applications within urban environments creates the need for more compact and efficient power electronics that can guarantee long lifetimes. The upcoming wide-bandgap semiconductor devices show great promise in providing the first two properties, but their packaging requires further testing in order to optimize their reliability. This paper demonstrates one iteration of the design for reliability methodology used in order to compare the generated thermo-mechanical stress in the die attach and the bond wires of a GaN and SiC MOSFET. An electro-thermal model of a photovoltaic string inverter is used in order to translate a cloudy and a clear one-hour mission profile from Arizona into a junction losses profile. Subsequently, the finite element method models of both devices are constructed through reverse engineering in order to analyze the plastic energy. The results show that the plastic energy in the die attach caused by a cloudy mission-profile is much higher th... [more]

Kaixuan Qiu, Heng Li
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: irregular stimulated region, multifractured horizontal wells, production analysis, shale gas
Shale gas reservoirs are typically developed by multistage, propped hydraulic fractures. The induced fractures have a complex geometry and can be represented by a high permeability region near each fracture, also called stimulated region. In this paper, a new integrative analytical solution coupled with gas adsorption, non-Darcy flow effect is derived for shale gas reservoirs. The modified pseudo-pressure and pseudo-time are defined to linearize the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) and thus the governing PDEs are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by integration, instead of the Laplace transform. The rate vs. pseudo-time solution in real-time space can be obtained, instead of using the numerical inversion for Laplace transform. The analytical model is validated by comparison with the numerical model. According to the fitting results, the calculation accuracy of analytic solution is almost 99%. Besides the computational convenience, another advantage... [more]

Keywords: DEA, Energy Efficiency, regression, sustainable economic development, sustainable financial development
The growing risk of climate change caused by the emission of greenhouse gases poses new challenges to contemporary countries. The development of economies is usually related to increasing levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the question arises whether it is possible to achieve sustainable economic and financial development and simultaneously reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper assumes it is possible if energy efficiency is increased. The aim of the paper is to show the link between energy efficiency and sustainable economic and financial development in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries for the period 2000−2018 by using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and regression analysis. The results show a slight upward trend of total factor energy efficiency (TFEE) in OECD countries for the analysed period; however, there is a difference in TFEE levels. Developed OECD countries have higher TFEE levels than developing OECD countries. The link... [more]

Keywords: asset management, dissolved gas analysis, maintenance management, oil insulation, power transformers, predictive maintenance
Predictive maintenance strategies in power transformers aim to assess the risk through the calculation and monitoring of the health index of the power transformers. The parameter most used in predictive maintenance and to calculate the health index of power transformers is the dissolved gas analysis (DGA). The current tendency is the use of online DGA monitoring equipment while continuing to perform analyses in the laboratory. Although the DGA is well known, there is a lack of published experimental data beyond that in the guides. This study used the nearest-rank method for obtaining the typical gas concentration values and the typical rates of gas increase from a transformer population to establish the optimal sampling interval and alarm thresholds of the continuous monitoring devices for each power transformer. The percentiles calculated by the nearest-rank method were within the ranges of the percentiles obtained using the R software, so this simple method was validated for this stu... [more]

Keywords: fuel cell cost reduction, fuel cell durability, fuel cell sizing, hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel cell, Stochastic Dynamic Programming
The size of the fuel cell and battery of a Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FCHEV) will heavily affect the overall performance of the vehicle, its fuel economy, driveability, and the rates of fuel cell degradation observed. An undersized fuel cell may experience accelerated ageing of the fuel cell membrane and catalyst due to excessive heat and transient loading. This work describes a multi-objective design exploration exercise of fuel cell size and battery capacity comparing hydrogen fuel consumption, fuel cell lifetime, vehicle mass and running cost. For each system design considered, an individually optimised Energy Management Strategy (EMS) has been generated using Stochastic Dynamic Programming (SDP) in order to prevent bias to the results due to the control strategy. It has been found that the objectives of fuel efficiency, lifetime and running cost are largely complimentary, but degradation and running costs are much more sensitive to design changes than fuel efficiency and th... Keywords: cell voltage, fuel cell, future energy, hydrogen production, Methanol
Hydrogen (H2) has attained significant benefits as an energy carrier due to its gross calorific value (GCV) and inherently clean operation. Thus, hydrogen as a fuel can lead to global sustainability. Conventional H2 production is predominantly through fossil fuels, and electrolysis is now identified to be most promising for H2 generation. This review describes the recent state of the art and challenges on ultra-pure H2 production through methanol electrolysis that incorporate polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM). It also discusses about the methanol electrochemical reforming catalysts as well as the impact of this process via PEM. The efficiency of H2 production depends on the different components of the PEM fuel cells, which are bipolar plates, current collector, and membrane electrode assembly. The efficiency also changes with the nature and type of the fuel, fuel/oxygen ratio, pressure, temperature, humidity, cell potential, and interfacial electronic level interaction between the red...
