Renewable Energy Equivalent Footprint (REEF): A Method for Envisioning a Sustainable Energy Future
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biocapacity, carbon emissions, ecological footprint, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
We present an alternative approach to estimating the spatial footprint of energy consumption, as this represents a major fraction of the ecological footprint (EF). Rather than depicting the current lack of sustainability that comes from estimating a footprint based on uptake of carbon emissions (the method used in EF accounting), our proposed “Renewable Energy Equivalent Footprint” (REEF) instead depicts a hypothetical world in which the electricity and fuel demands are met entirely from renewable energy. The analysis shows that current human energy demands could theoretically be met by renewable energy and remain within the biocapacity of one planet. However, with current technology there is no margin to leave any biocapacity for nature, leading to the investigation of two additional scenarios: (1) radical electrification of the energy supply, assuming 75% of final energy demand can be met with electricity, and (2) adopting technology in which electricity is used to convert atmospheri... A Steady-State Wind Farm Wake Model Implemented in OpenFAST
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Floris, Gaussian wake model, OpenFAST, wake model, wind farm control, wind turbine
Wake models play a fundamental role in finding optimized solutions in wind farm control. In fact, they allow assessing how wakes develop and interact with each other with the agility required for real-time applications. In this paper, a Gaussian Wake Model (GWM) is implemented in the OpenFAST framework in a way such that its fidelity is increased with respect to previously implemented models, while enhancing its compatibility with control purposes. The OpenFAST tool is coupled with Floris, NREL’s software based on the GWM, in order to simulate the wake effect on downstream machines (in the case where the downstream rotor is fully covered by the wake, only partially covered by the wake, of the wake is generated by the interaction of more than one turbine), while the rotor aerodynamics is calculated using the BEMT on the actual rotor flow field. We intend this work as a starting point for developing and testing open/closed-loop control logics that will work in real wind farms. To show th... [more]

Evaluation of Clearance to Stop Requirements in A Seismically Isolated Nuclear Power Plant
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clearance to the stop (CS), lead rubber bearing (LRB), nuclear power plant(NPP), performance criteria, seismic isolation, ultimate property diagram (UPD)
Seismically isolated nuclear power plants (NPPs) can provide substantial benefits towards reducing the failure probability of NPPs, especially for beyond design basis earthquake shaking. One risk posed by seismic isolation is the potential for pounding to a stop or moat wall, with currently little guidance provided by design standards on how to address this concern. In this paper, a structural model of an isolated NPP based on the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 MW is enveloped with moat walls and advanced bearing models. The bearing models account for large strain behavior through failure based on full-scale experiments with lead rubber bearings (LRBs). Using these analytical models and a measured ultimate property diagram from LRB failure tests, the range of clearance to the stop considering the performance criteria for the NPP is investigated. Although the analysis results are dependent on the particular models, ground motions, and criteria employed, this research provides an overview o... [more]

An Economic Penalty Scheme for Optimal Parking Lot Utilization with EV Charging Requirements
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic penalty model, electric vehicles charging, price and consumption model, public area orderly parking and charging
In the parking lots of public commercial areas, such as shopping malls, hospitals, and scenic spots, the parking spaces with electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities are often occupied by ordinary cars. How to regulate the parking order in the parking lot is a key issue in the operation and management of the parking facilities. In this paper, a method of assessing parking fees for vehicles parked at the charging facilities is proposed based on an economic penalty strategy, including fixed-penalty and dynamic-penalty strategies. First, a traffic flow model of the parking lot in public area is established. Then, a price and consumption model of parking fees and parking lot utilization is established, along with different penalty strategies. Finally, taking the parking lot of a shopping mall as an example, the penalty strategies are optimized through particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The simulation results show that the method proposed can help to improve the utilization of EV... [more]

Floating Offshore Renewable Energy Farms. A Life-Cycle Cost Analysis at Brindisi, Italy
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid wind-wave system, LCOE, life-cycle cost analysis (LCC), offshore wave energy, offshore wind energy
The present paper deals with the Life-Cycle Cost (LCC) of an offshore renewable energy farm that is currently a topic of interest for operators and investors. The LCC analysis refers to the Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) considering all the phases of life span, and it has been carried out for floating offshore wind farms (FOWFs) and hybrid wind-wave farms (HWWFs). For HWWFs, this paper proposes a hybrid wind-wave energy system (HWWES), which provides the coupling of wave energy converter (WEC) with Tension Leg Platform (TLP) or Spar Buoy platform (SB). The LCC analysis has been carried out considering: (i) FOWF consisting of TLP floating platforms; (ii) FOWF consisting of a SB floating platforms; (iii) HWWF realized with the conceived hybrid system coupling the WEC with the TLP platform; (iv) HWWF realized with the conceived hybrid system coupling the WEC with SB platform. In addition to the LCC evaluation, the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) analysis has also been carried out. The sit... [more]

Optimization of a PV-Wind Hybrid Power Supply Structure with Electrochemical Storage Intended for Supplying a Load with Known Characteristics
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Batteries, Energy Storage, hybrid systems, LCOE, off-grid reliability, Optimization, renewable energy sources
An important aspect of the off-grid utilization of hybrid generation systems is the integration of energy storage facilities into their structures, which allows for improved power supply reliability. However, this results in a significant increase in the cost of such systems. Therefore, it is justified to use optimization resulting in the minimization of the selected economic indicator taking into account the most important technical constraints. For this reason, this work proposes an algorithm to optimize the structure of a hybrid off-grid power distribution system (with electrochemical energy storage), designed to supply a load with known daily energy demand. The authors recommend genetic algorithm utilization as well as a modified criterion for evaluating the quality of solutions based on the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) index. Several technical and economic analyses were presented, including unit costs, power distribution of the wind and solar sections, nominal battery capacity,... [more]

Conversion and Testing of a Solar Thermal Parabolic Trough Collector for CPV-T Application
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrated solar power, concentrator photovoltaic, CPV, CPV-T, CSP, multi-junction cell, parabolic trough
In the field of solar power generation, concentrator systems, such as concentrator photovoltaics (CPV) or concentrated solar power (CSP), are subject of intensive research activity, due to high efficiencies in electrical power generation compared to conventional photovoltaics (PV) and low-cost energy storage on the thermal side. Even though the idea of combining the thermal and electrical part in one absorber is obvious, very few hybrid systems (i.e., concentrator photovoltaics-thermal systems (CPV-T)) are either described in literature or commercially available. This paper features the conversion of a commercial thermal parabolic trough collector to a CPV-T hybrid system using multi-junction PV cells. The design process is described in detail starting with the selection of suitable PV cells, elaborating optical and mechanical system requirements, heat sink design and final assembly. Feasibility is proven by practical tests involving maximum power point tracking as well as empirical de... [more]

Fog Forecast Using WRF Model Output for Solar Energy Applications
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fog forecast, numerical weather prediction, power production forecast, solar energy, WRF
The occurrence of fog often causes errors in the prediction of the incident solar radiation and the power produced by photovoltaic cells. An accurate fog forecast would benefit solar energy producers and grid operators, who could take coordinated actions to reduce the impact of discontinuity, the main drawback of renewable energy sources. Considering that information on discontinuity is crucial to optimize power production estimation and plant management efficiency, in this work, a fog forecast method based on the output of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical model is presented. The areal extension and temporal duration of a fog event are not easy to predict. In fact, there are many physical processes and boundary conditions that cause fog development, such as the synoptic situation, air stability, wind speed, season, aerosol load, orographic influence, humidity and temperature. These make fog formation a complex and rather localized event. Thus, the results of a fog f... [more]

Energy Allocation Strategies for Common Property Load Connected to Shared Solar and Battery Storage Systems in Strata Apartments
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: apartments, battery storage, common areas, energy allocation, grid reduction, shared microgrid, solar PV
Common property (CP) is a significant consumer of electricity in apartment buildings. Although some apartments in Australia have adopted shared microgrid configurations to offset grid consumption, the characteristics and load patterns of CP are rarely discussed due to lack of available data. As common areas normally constitute part of owner corporations, energy distribution in these premises requires attention. This paper presents empirical analysis of the CP load connected to shared solar and battery storage for three apartment complexes located in Perth Australia. Load patterns for CP over a defined dataset period were analyzed, and grid usage reduction was examined by implementing and comparing three energy allocation strategies based on surplus energy utilization. The findings indicated significant grid usage reduction for CP load in different apartments after implementation of three strategies. Instantaneous consumption decreased 72%, and surplus allocation strategy reduced 91%, w... [more]

Influence of an Integral Heave Plate on the Dynamic Response of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Under Operational and Storm Conditions
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FAST, floating offshore wind turbine, hydrodynamic performance, integral damping plate, offshore wind energy
The hydrodynamic performance of the floating foundation for offshore wind turbines is essential to its stability and energy harvesting. A semi-submersible platform with an integral heave plate is proposed in order to reduce the vertical motion responses. In this study, we compare the heave, pitch, and roll free decay motions of the new platform with a WindFloat-type platform based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. The differences of the linear and quadratic damping properties between these platforms are revealed. Then, a FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) model with the consideration of fluid viscosity effects is set up to investigate the performance of the new platform under storm and operational conditions. The time-domain responses, motion spectra, and the mooring-tension statistics of these two platforms are evaluated. It is found that the integral heave plate can increase the viscous hydrodynamic damping, significantly decrease the heave and pit... [more]

Technological and Operational Aspects That Limit Small Wind Turbines Performance
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, control systems, distributed generation, hybrid systems, manufacturing, microgrid integration, small wind turbine, wind energy, wind resource
Small Wind Turbines (SWTs) are promissory for distributed generation using renewable energy sources; however, their deployment in a broad sense requires to address topics related to their cost-efficiency. This paper aims to survey recent developments about SWTs holistically, focusing on multidisciplinary aspects such as wind resource assessment, rotor aerodynamics, rotor manufacturing, control systems, and hybrid micro-grid integration. Wind resource produces inputs for the rotor’s aerodynamic design that, in turn, defines a blade shape that needs to be achieved by a manufacturing technique while ensuring structural integrity. A control system may account for the rotor’s aerodynamic performance interacting with an ever-varying wind resource. At the end, the concept of integration with other renewable source is justified, according to the inherent variability of wind generation. Several commercially available SWTs are compared to study how some of the previously mentioned aspects impact... [more]

Investigation of the Fuel Utilization Factor in PEM Fuel Cell Considering the Effect of Relative Humidity at the Cathode
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydrogen consumption scenarios, modified fuel utilization, PEM fuel cell, useful water
This research consists of both theoretical and experimental sections presenting a novel scenario for the consumption of hydrogen in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In the theory section, a new correction factor called parameter δ is used for the calculation of fuel utilization by introducing concepts of “useful water” and “non-useful water”. The term of “useful water” refers to the state that consumed hydrogen leads to the production of liquid water and external electric current. In the experimental section, the effect of the relative humidity of the cathode side on the performance and power density is investigated by calculating the parameter δ and the modified fuel utilization at 50% and 80% relative humidity. Based on the experimental results, the maximum power density obtained at 50% and 80% relative humidity of the cathode side is about 645 mW/cm2 and 700 mW/cm2, respectively. On the other hand, the maximum value of parameter δ for a value of 50% relative humid... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flyback, high voltage gain, MPPT, O, P&, PV, step-up, three-level
This paper proposes a family of step-up three-level DC-DC converter topologies suitable for photovoltaic panel integration applications. The proposed family is suitable to convert the 10−30 V from photovoltaic panels to a 150 V direct current distribution bus. The proposed family enhances the three-level topology in terms of the voltage gain, power density, and filtering requirements at the input level. The filtration is reduced by interleaving. The three-level boost converter’s voltage gain is enhanced by utilizing several options such as switched capacitor cells, switched inductor cells, and flyback transformers or coupled inductors. The enhancement techniques are illustrated by providing the circuit diagram and a comparison of the voltage gain and the number of required components. An example converter of a hybrid three-level boost converter with a flyback transformer is presented to convert 20 V from a photovoltaic panel to a 400 V. Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) porous substrate-reinforced composite membranes for energy conversion technologies are prepared and characterized. In particular, we develop a new hydrophilic treatment method by in-situ biomimetic silicification for PTFE substrates having high porosity (60−80%) since it is difficult to impregnate ionomer into strongly hydrophobic PTFE porous substrates for the preparation of composite membranes. The thinner substrate having ~5 μm treated by the gallic acid/(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine solution with the incubation time of 30 min shows the best hydrophilic treatment result in terms of contact angle. In addition, the composite membranes using the porous substrates show the highest proton conductivity and the lowest water uptake and swelling ratio. April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, polymer gel electrolyte, quasi-solid-state, TiO2 nanotube
Free-standing TiO2 nanotube (NT) electrodes have attracted much attention for application in solid- or quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) because of their suitable pore structure for the infiltration of solid electrolytes. However, few studies have been performed on the relationship between nanostructures of these NT electrodes and the photovoltaic properties of the solid- or quasi-solid-state DSSCs. Here, we prepare vertically aligned and highly ordered TiO2 NT electrodes via a two-step anodization method for application in quasi-solid-state DSSCs that employs a polymer gel electrolyte. The length of NT arrays is controlled in the range of 10−42 μm by varying the anodization time, and the correlation between NT length and the photovoltaic properties of quasi-solid-state DSSCs is investigated. As the NT length increases, the roughness factor of the electrode is enlarged, leading to the higher dye-loading; however, photovoltage is gradually decreased, resulting in an o... [more]

Review on Energy Efficiency Progresses, Technologies and Strategies in the Ceramic Sector Focusing on Waste Heat Recovery
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ceramic industry, Energy Efficiency, thermal processes, waste heat recovery
Thermal processes represent a considerable part of the total energy consumption in manufacturing industry, in sectors such as steel, aluminium, cement, ceramic and glass, among others. It can even be the predominant type of energy consumption in some sectors. High thermal energy processes are mostly associated to high thermal losses, (commonly denominated as waste heat), reinforcing the need for waste heat recovery (WHR) strategies. WHR has therefore been identified as a relevant solution to increase energy efficiency in industrial thermal applications, namely in energy intensive consumers. The ceramic sector is a clear example within the manufacturing industry mainly due to the fuel consumption required for the following processes: firing, drying and spray drying. This paper reviews studies on energy efficiency improvement measures including WHR practices applied to the ceramic sector. This focuses on technologies and strategies which have significant potential to promote energy savin... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuzzy rules, Fuzzy-PI control, load reduction, pitch angle controller, wind turbine
A novel fuzzy rule is proposed to adopt a positive pitch strategy when the error between the measured and rated generator speed becomes large and continues to increase, and to adopt a negative pitch strategy when the error is small. The improved approach is introduced into the normal Fuzzy-Proportional-Integral (Fuzzy-PI) control strategy by dividing the fuzzy rules into four areas and analyzing the design method for each area. Furthermore, a low pass filter is used to reduce the ultimate loads of the pitch driver caused by the novel fuzzy rules. The modeling of the wind turbine load under turbulent wind conditions is conducted in GH Bladed, and MATLAB/Simulink is used to interact with the modeling to verify the novel Fuzzy-PI control. The results show that, compared with normal Fuzzy-PI control, the novel Fuzzy-PI control can greatly reduce the ultimate loads and fatigue loads of the pitch driver. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, curtailment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy curtailment often occurs to accommodate large amounts of renewable energy sources in power systems while maintaining system stability and reliability. Widely known methods, such as new transmission line construction, the introduction of demand-side resources, and the reduction of conventional generator output, can minimize the occurrence of curtailment; however, there are difficulties in introducing them because of social and economic problems. For these problems, the Jeju power system adopted a battery energy storage system (BESS) resource to mitigate the curtailment and secure frequency stability with the high penetration of renewable energy. The small-size Jeju island power system is operated with reliability must-run (RMR) units and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines connected to the mainland. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity market, energy management, peak shaving, pumped hydroelectric energy storage, renewable energy sources
Besides many benefits deriving from the energy transition process, it is not uncommon for modern power systems to be faced with difficulties in their operation. The issues are dominantly related to the non-dispatchable nature of renewable energy sources (RES) and the mismatching between electricity generation and load demand. As a consequence of a constant peak load growth, this problem is particularly pronounced during the daily peak hours. Therefore, it is of great importance to conduct all necessary activities within the system in order to preserve the system stability and continuity of operation. Energy storage systems have been recognized as a major facilitator of renewable energy, by providing additional operational flexibility. Since pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) accounts for almost 97% of the world’s storage capacity, in this paper, we have investigated the benefits of using pumped-storage hydropower in modern power systems characterized by high penetration of RES...
