Navid Goudarzi, Kasra Mohammadi, Alexandra St. Pé, Ruben Delgado, Weidong Zhu
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atmospheric variation, conventional and unconventional wind harvesting machines, distributed generation, feasibility, Maryland, urban physics, wind resource assessment
Annual mean wind speed distribution models for power generation based on regional wind resource maps are limited by spatial and temporal resolutions. These models, in general, do not consider the impact of local terrain and atmospheric circulations. In this study, long-term five-year wind data at three sites on the North, East, and West of the Baltimore metropolitan area, Maryland, USA are statistically analyzed. The Weibull probability density function was defined based on the observatory data. Despite seasonal and spatial variability in the wind resource, the annual mean wind speed for all sites is around 3 m/s, suggesting the region is not suitable for large-scale power generation. However, it does display a wind power capacity that might allow for non-grid connected small-scale wind turbine applications. Technical and economic performance evaluations of more than 150 conventional small-scale wind turbines showed that an annual capacity factor and electricity production of 11% and 1... [more]
Electrolyte-Assisted Hydrogen Cycling in Lithium and Sodium Alanates at Low Pressures and Temperatures

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alanates 4, dehydrogenation 3, electrolyte 5, Hydrogen Storage 1, hydrogenation 2
An investigation of electrolyte-assisted hydrogen storage reactions in complex aluminum hydrides (LiAlH4 and NaAlH4) reveals significantly reduced reaction times for hydrogen desorption and uptake in the presence of an electrolyte. LiAlH4 evolves ~7.8 wt% H2 over ~3 h in the presence of a Li-KBH4 eutectic at 130 °C compared to ~25 h for the same material without the electrolyte. Similarly, NaAlH4 exhibits 4.8 wt% H2 evolution over ~4 h in the presence of a diglyme electrolyte at 150 °C compared to 4.4 wt% in ~15 h for the same material without the electrolyte. These reduced reaction times are composed of two effects, an increase in reaction rates and a change in the reaction kinetics. While typical solid state dehydrogenation reactions exhibit kinetics with rates that continuously decrease with the extent of reaction, we find that the addition of an electrolyte results in rates that are relatively constant over the full desorption window. Fitting the kinetics to an Avrami-Erofe’ev mode... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: interface behavior, offshore wind turbine, particle size of sand, relative roughness, suction caisson
The interface behavior between a caisson and the surrounding soil plays an important role in the installation of suction caissons as foundations for offshore wind turbines. A series of shear tests were carried out using a modified direct shear apparatus to study the interface shear behavior between sand and concrete. Sand samples with three particle size ranges (0.63−1.25 mm, 1.25−2.5 mm, 2.5−5.0 mm) and concrete plates with different relative roughness were used to explore the influence of the relative roughness parameter (Rn) and mean particle size (D50) on shear behavior. The responses from the pure sand shear test are also discussed for comparison. Test results show that the higher the relative roughness (Rn), the greater the maximum shear stress (τmax) appeared. The interface shear stress was weaker than that of the pure sand test. Furthermore, the interface friction angle (φ) of sand−concrete was closely related to the relative roughness of the concrete surface. Under the same co... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbonate, concentrated solar power, hydroxide, perovskite, redox systems, solid-gas reaction, thermochemical energy storage
The exploitation of solar energy, an unlimited and renewable energy resource, is of prime interest to support the replacement of fossil fuels by renewable energy alternatives. Solar energy can be used via concentrated solar power (CSP) combined with thermochemical energy storage (TCES) for the conversion and storage of concentrated solar energy via reversible solid−gas reactions, thus enabling round the clock operation and continuous production. Research is on-going on efficient and economically attractive TCES systems at high temperatures with long-term durability and performance stability. Indeed, the cycling stability with reduced or no loss in capacity over many cycles of heat charge and discharge of the material is pursued. The main thermochemical systems currently investigated are encompassing metal oxide redox pairs (MOx/MOx−1), non-stoichiometric perovskites (ABO3/ABO3−δ), alkaline earth metal carbonates and hydroxides (MCO3/MO, M(OH)2/MO with M = Ca, Sr, Ba). Sung-Hoon Seol, Ahmed A. Serageldin, Oh Kyung Kwon
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic fouling cleaning system, fish farm, fouling, heat pump system, heat transfer
In this research, automatic fouling cleaning systems that clean and prevent the deposit of fouling by regularly circulating sponge or ceramic balls are proposed. Characteristics of the finned and twisted inner tubes of the double pipe heat exchanger for the heat pump unit are also compared. Lastly, the 50RT-scale field test of the automatic fouling cleaning system integrated with the heat pump system was conducted by targeting temperature control of fish farms. The finned inner tube types presented a higher heat transfer rate than that of the twisted inner tube types. For the finned tube types, the refrigerant supply from the tangential direction was more advantageous due to the uniform distribution of refrigerant into 16 channels. The twisted tubes showed a higher water pressure drop than the finned inner tubes. An obvious increase in the fouling factor according to the operating hours was observed; however, it could be successfully decreased by operating the fouling cleaning system f... [more]

The creation of efficient and compact heat exchangers is one of the priority tasks arising during the design of heat and gas supply to industrial and residential buildings. As a rule, finned surfaces and turbulization of heat carrier flows are used to increase the efficiency of heat exchange in heat exchangers. The present paper proposes to use novel materials, namely porous material, in the design of highly efficient heat exchangers. The investigation was carried out experimentally and theoretically. To study the possibility of creating such heat exchangers, a multi-purpose test bench is created. The aim of the study was to assess the intensity of heat transfer in heat exchangers using porous metal. Laboratory tests are carried out as part of the experimental study. In the theoretical study, the classical equation for the change in the heat flux density when the coolant passes through the porous insert was used. As a result, a mathematical model was obtained in the form of a second-or... [more]

Keywords: control capacity, noise assessment, physical condition, subjective opinions, wind turbines noise
As a renewable energy source, wind energy harvesting provides a desirable solution to address the environmental concerns associated with energy production to satisfy the increasingly global demand. Over the years, the penetration of wind turbines has experienced a rapid growth, however, the impacts of turbine noise correspondingly become a major concern in wind energy harvesting. Recent studies indicate that the noise emitted by turbine operating could increase the risk of nuisance, which might further affect the well-being of local residents. However, the main factors affecting turbine noise assessment and to what extent they contribute to the assessment are still unclear. In this study, a survey-based approach is developed to identify these major factors and to explore the interactions between the factors and assessment results. Principal component analysis method was adapted to extract key factors; followed by reliability assessment, validity analysis, descriptive assessment, and co... [more]

Keywords: battery, dihydrogen, fuel cell, fuel cell vehicle, Future prospects, hybrid power source, thermodynamic
Driven by a small number of niche markets and several decades of application research, fuel cell systems (FCS) are gradually reaching maturity, to the point where many players are questioning the interest and intensity of its deployment in the transport sector in general. This article aims to shed light on this debate from the road transport perspective. It focuses on the description of the fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in order to understand its assets, limitations and current paths of progress. These vehicles are basically hybrid systems combining a fuel cell and a lithium-ion battery, and different architectures are emerging among manufacturers, who adopt very different levels of hybridization. The main opportunity of Fuel Cell Vehicles is clearly their design versatility based on the decoupling of the choice of the number of Fuel Cell modules and hydrogen tanks. This enables manufacturers to meet various specifications using standard products. Upcoming developments will be in line with t... [more]

Wang Lai Wang, Marek Kryszak
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: industry consolidation, PV industry, solar cell, solar module, technological progress
The recent years of the PV industry have been demarcated by a severe imbalance of manufacturing capacities versus demand. The goal of our research was to assess the technological progress and evolution of the Taiwanese c-Si PV supplier industry structure during the period of 2016 to 2019 when the end-product experienced price volatility. The analysis was conducted based on data derived from Taiwanese manufacturers and industry sources with regard to current technological and market trends. We illuminate two main conclusions: the industry is advancing consolidation, and it is decreasing the pace of technological advancements, especially in comparison to its Chinese counterparts. The study suggests there is a need for improving efficiencies in the production processes, and shifting toward downstream segments in order to maximize the utilization of resources in the segments with the highest profit margins.

For low and medium wind conditions, there is a possibility to harness maximum wind potential reducing the cost of energy by employing catchment-based wind turbine designs. This paper aims to study catchment-based small wind turbine aerodynamic performance for improved efficiency and reduced cost of energy. Hence, design parameters are considered based on specific conditions within a catchment area. The bins and statistical methods implemented with Weibull distribution of wind data for selected sites to characterize the wind conditions and a weighted average method proposed to create representative wind conditions implementing a single blade concept. The blade element method was applied using Matlab code (version R2017a, MathWorks Inc., Natick, MA, US) for aerodynamic design and analysis, and computational fluid dynamics employed using ANSYS—Fluent (version 18.1, ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA) for validation. The performance of the designed blade is evaluated based on annual energy pr... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC power system, DC voltage fluctuation suppression, DC-linked battery, LVRT (low voltage ride through), renewable energy sources
Due to the increase in DC load and DC Power generation, the need for DC power system is emerging. Accordingly, FRT (fault ride through) and LVRT (low voltage ride through), which are related regulations for renewable energy sources, have been enacted, and operation algorithms of each converter are required for this. However, the operation of the converter according to LVRT regulations causes DC voltage fluctuations. In the current study, DC voltage fluctuation is suppressed through converter control of DC-linked battery. The controller was designed from the relational equation between DC voltage and instantaneous power of battery. The pattern of DC voltage fluctuations to the output of the PV (photovoltaic), which is a DC power generation source, was confirmed, and voltage fluctuation suppression was verified by applying the designed converter cooperation algorithm and controller.

Keywords: adsorption chiller, coefficient of performance, desalination, Energy Efficiency, low-temperature heat, silica gel, specific cooling power, waste heat recovery
Energy efficiency is one of the most important topics nowadays. It is strictly related to energy demand, energy policy, environmental pollution, and economic issues. Energy efficiency can be increased and operating costs reduced by using waste heat from other processes. One of the possibilities is to use sorption chillers to produce chilled water and desalinated water. Low-temperature waste heat is not easy to utilize because of the low energy potential. Using adsorption chillers in low-temperature conditions allows utilizing waste heat and producing useful products in many regions of the world. The paper presents the results of an experimental study carried out on a three-bed adsorption chiller with desalination function, using silica gel and water as a working pair. The laboratory test stand included one evaporator, one condenser, and three separate tanks for water, desalinated water, and brine, respectively. The test stands scheme and description were presented. All results were obt... [more]

Keywords: degradation, frequency response analysis, impedance, PEMFC diagnosis, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell
Several experimental techniques involving dynamic electrical variables are used to study the complex behaviour of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells in order to improve performance and durability. Among them, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is one of the most employed methods. Like any frequency response analysis (FRA) methodology, EIS enables one to separate the contribution of many processes to performance losses. However, it fails to identify processes with a similar time constant and the interpretation of EIS spectra is often ambiguous. In the last decade, alternative FRA methodologies based on non-electrical inputs and/or outputs have been developed. These studies were mainly driven by requirements for a better diagnosis of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) faulty operation conditions as well as better component and material design. In this contribution, a state-of-the-art EIS and novel FRA techniques for PEMFC diagnosis are summarised. First, comm... [more]

Keywords: deeply penetrating U-shaped configuration, energy piles, geothermal energy, heat exchanger, parametric analysis, pile group
This study presents a novel heat exchanger configuration, called a deeply penetrating U-shaped configuration, for energy piles. The outlet water temperature, temperature variation along the tube, and heat transfer rate are simulated and computed using Comsol Multiphysics software. The simulations are for the cooling mode. The proposed configuration is compared with traditional U-shaped and W-shaped configurations to prove its superiority. The thermal performance of the pile group is compared with that of a single pile to investigate the effects of the pile group on the heat transfer. A parametric analysis is performed to investigate the effects of several important parameters (i.e., pile spacing, pile diameter, soil type, and thermal parameters) on the heat transfer performance of an energy pile group with the proposed deeply penetrating U-shaped configuration. The results indicate that the corner pile indicates a nonnegligible heat transfer rate 6.8% and 9.9% higher than the central p... [more]

Keywords: developing countries, energy-efficient technologies, LED, low-carbon technology transfer, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, technology innovation systems (TIS)
Electricity consumption from lighting accounts for about 15% of total power demand and 5−6% of greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries. It is therefore a promising avenue to achieve considerable energy savings through technological innovation and upgrading. India has been very successful in recent years with a nationwide roll-out of modern light-emitting diode (LED) applications. This study uses the framework of technology innovation systems to identify the actors, institutions, and processes behind the diffusion of this technology. Our findings indicate that national innovation strategies, along with low-carbon technology (LCT) transfer policies, helped to bring down the cost of LED lamps in a rapidly expanding domestic market. Based on the findings, we further explore lessons for broader issues of low-carbon technology transfer and suggest an emerging intermediate step between north−south and south−south technology transfer.

Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, electric vehicle, vehicle-to-grid
Although the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is overall positive for the environment and for the sustainable use of resources, the extra effort that requires purchasing an EV when compared to an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) competitor make them less appealing from an economical point of view. In addition to that, there are other challenges in EVs (autonomy, battery, recharge time, etc.) that are non-existent in ICE vehicles. Nevertheless, the possibility of providing electricity to the power grid via vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G), along with lower maintenance costs, could prove that EVs are the most economically efficient option in the long run. Indeed, enabling V2G would make EVs capable of saving some costs for their vehicle owners, thus making them a better long-term mobility choice that could trigger deep changes in habits of vehicle owners. This paper describes a cost−benefit analysis of how consumers can make use of V2G solutions, in a way that th... [more]

Keywords: acceleration, engine, generator, hybrid electric vehicle, Modelling, motor
There are many different mathematical models that can be used to describe relations between energy machines in the power-split hybrid drive system. Usually, they are created based on simulations or measurements in bench (laboratory) conditions. In that sense, however, these are the idealized conditions. It is not known how the internal combustion engine and electrical machines work in real road conditions, especially during acceleration. This motivated the authors to set the goal of solving this research problem. The solution was to implement and develop the model predictive control (MPC) method for driving modes (electric, normal) of a hybrid electric vehicle equipped with a power-split drive system. According to the adopted mathematical model, after determining the type of model and its structure, the measurements were performed. There were carried out as road tests in two driving modes of the hybrid electric vehicle: electric and normal. The measurements focused on the internal comb... [more]

Keywords: energy flexibility, governance, positive energy districts, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart city deployment
As energy generation based on renewable resources does not always match energy consumption profiles, Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) should embody energy flexibility technologies to decrease possible negative impacts on existing grids due to, e.g., reverse power flows. As part of the EU H2020 Smart Cities and Communities project POCITYF, the cities Alkmaar (NL) and Évora (PT) aim to support the deployment and market uptake of such districts and in doing so demonstrate innovative and integrated technologies to enable flexibility in the energy system. This paper addresses implementation conditions for energy flexibility technologies that help cities to engender the expected impact and ensure replication of these technologies to other sites. It aims to guide both urban planners and technology solution providers through pitfalls and opportunities that can appear during the design and implementation of PEDs. Taking this into consideration, the RUGGEDISED innovation and implementation frame... [more]

Keywords: maximum power point tracking, small wind, type 4, variable speed wind turbine, wind turbine control
Currently, wind power is the fastest-growing means of electricity generation in the world. To obtain the maximum efficiency from the wind energy conversion system, it is important that the control strategy design is carried out in the best possible way. In fact, besides regulating the frequency and output voltage of the electrical signal, these strategies should also extract energy from wind power at the maximum level of efficiency. With advances in micro-controllers and electronic components, the design and implementation of efficient controllers are steadily improving. This paper presents a maximum power point tracking controller scheme for a small wind energy conversion system with a variable speed permanent magnet synchronous generator. With the controller, the system extracts optimum possible power from the wind speed reaching the wind turbine and feeds it to the grid at constant voltage and frequency based on the AC−DC−AC conversion system. April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disk milling, energy cane, lignocellulosic biofuels, liquid hot water pretreatment, sugar production
Energy cane is an attractive lignocellulosic feedstock for processing into biofuels and bioproducts. A low-severity two-step hydrothermal pretreatment was investigated on energy cane for the production of monomeric sugar. Pretreatment temperature and time, in addition to the effect of disk milling, were observed for the glucose and xylose yields during hydrolysis. At residence times above 5 min in case of pretreatment at 200 °C, all of the hemicellulose was observed to be solubilized. The pretreatment condition of 200 °C for 10 min with disk milling was observed to provide the highest glucose concentration of 5.4%, and 200 °C for 5 min with disk milling provided the highest xylose concentration of 2.15%. The effect of disk milling in improving the sugar concentrations during hydrolysis was significant, especially at lower pretreatment temperatures and times. Low xylose yields at higher temperatures were attributed to the formation of degradation products at increased severity.

Keywords: CO2 adsorption, diamine, mesoporous silica, supercritical fluids, surface functionalization
The CO2 adsorption process using amine-grafted silica is a promising technology for reducing the CO2 emissions from the power and industry sectors. In this work, silica SBA-15 was functionalized using [3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyl] trimethoxysilane (AEAPTS) in supercritical CO2 (scCO2) modified with 10% mol methanol or ethanol. The functionalization experiments were carried out at 323 K and 12.5 MPa, and with reaction times of 2 and 3 h. The molar fraction of AEAPTS in scCO2 plus 10% mol alcohol ranged from 0.5 × 10−3 to 1.8 × 10−3. It was found that as the molar fraction of AEAPTS increased, the amino-grafting density steadily rose, and the pore volume, surface area and pore size of the functionalized silica SBA-15 also decreased gradually. The scCO2 functionalization method was compared to the traditional toluene method. The diamine-SBA-15 prepared in the scCO2 process shows a slightly lower amine-grafting density but a higher surface area and pore volume than the ones obtained using... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic simulation, electromagnetic scattering characteristic, engine fan, grid transformation, rotor blade
With the continuous advancement of rotor dynamic electromagnetic scattering research, the radar cross-section (RCS) of turbofan engines has attracted more and more attention. In order to solve the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of a biaxial multirotor turbofan engine, a dynamic scattering method (DSM) based on dynamic simulation and grid transformation is presented, where the static RCS of the engine and its components is calculated by physical optics and physical theory of diffraction. The results show that the electromagnetic scattering of the engine is periodic when the engine is working stably, while the rotors such as fans and turbines are the main factors affecting the dynamic electromagnetic scattering and the ducts greatly increase the overall RCS level of the engine. The proposed DSM is effective and efficient for studying the dynamic electromagnetic scattering characteristic of the turbofan engine.
