Artur Łukaszewski, Łukasz Nogal, Sylwester Robak
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: graph theory, greedy algorithms, Prim’s algorithm, restoration strategy, spanning tree
In self-healing grid systems, high utility in the use of greedy algorithms is observed. One of the most popular solutions is based on Prim’s algorithm. In the computation, the power grid is represented as a weighted graph. This paper presents a few possibilities of calculation of the numerical weight of a branch of the graph. The proposition of a modified edge weight calculation based on active power belongs to this group. The other solutions are novel subalgorithms bounded by real power, reactive power, and normalized factor. This factor is a mathematical combination of active and reactive power multiplied by influence coefficients. Requirements necessary for a power system are applied in the considered algorithms. Each of these proposed algorithms includes the power source limits, voltage level at busbars, and power system transmission features, such as transmission lines rated currents and power losses. All mentioned methods were compiled into separate algorithms, which can be used... [more]

Keywords: fault early warning, feature reduction, feedwater heater, frequent pattern model, stacked denoising sparse autoencoder
Power grid operation faces severe challenges with the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energies. Hence the steam turbine, which mainly undertakes the task of frequency regulation and peak shaving, always operates under off-design conditions to meet the accommodation demand. This would affect the operation economy and exacerbate the ullage of equipment. The feedwater heater (FWH) plays an important role in unit, whose timely fault early warning is significant in improving the operational reliability of unit. Therefore, this paper proposes a stacked denoising sparse autoencoder (SDSAE) based fault early warning method for FWH. Firstly, the concept of a frequent pattern model is proposed as an indicator of FWH performance evaluation. Then, an SDSAE- back-propagation (BP) based method is introduced to achieve self-adaptive feature reduction and depict nonlinear properties of frequent pattern modeling. By experimenting with actual data, the feasibility and validity of the pr... [more]

Guilong Zhang, Ziqiang Ma, Heng Li, Jinshi Wang
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensate surface, droplet, Marangoni condensation, temperature distribution, thermal infrared images
Marangoni condensation is formed due to the surface tension gradient caused by the local temperature or concentration gradient on the condensate surface; thus, the investigation of the surface temperature distribution characteristics is crucial to reveal the condensation mechanism and heat transfer characteristics. Few studies have been conducted on the temperature distribution of the condensate surface. In this study, thermal infrared images were used to measure the temperature distributions of the condensate surface during Marangoni condensation for ethanol−water mixture vapor. The results showed that the surface temperature distribution of the single droplet was uneven, and a large temperature gradient, approximately 15.6 °C/mm, existed at the edge of the condensate droplets. The maximum temperature difference on the droplet surface reached up to 8 °C. During the condensation process, the average surface temperature of a single droplet firstly increased rapidly and then slowly until... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas to liquid momentum flux ratio, gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors, injector design, performance efficiency, staged-combustion-cycle rocket engines
The effects of the momentum-flux ratio of propellant upon the combustion efficiency of a gas-centered-swirl-coaxial (GCSC) injector used in the combustion chamber of a full-scale 9-tonf staged-combustion-cycle engine were studied experimentally. In the combustion experiment, liquid oxygen was used as an oxidizer, and kerosene was used as fuel. The liquid oxygen and kerosene burned in the preburner drive the turbine of the turbopump under the oxidizer-rich hot-gas condition before flowing into the GCSC injector of the combustion chamber. The oxidizer-rich hot gas is mixed with liquid kerosene passed through combustion chamber’s cooling channel at the injector outlet. This mixture has a dimensionless momentum-flux ratio that depends upon the dispensing speed of the two fluids. Combustion tests were performed under varying mixture ratios and combustion pressures for different injector shapes and numbers of injectors, and the characteristic velocities and performance efficiencies of the co... Namhyuck Ahn, Sanghoon Park
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensation resistance, heat transfer analysis, heat transmittance, hybrid timber windows, hygrothermal performance, thermal conductivity, timber windows, wood anatomy, wood physics
When assessing the hygrothermal performance of timber windows, it is important to apply the unique thermal conductivity of wood by each wood species as well as an anatomical direction within the same material as they affect the performance and long-term durability of products. A series of heat transfer analyses of window frames using THERM and WINDOW along with measurements on the thermal conductivity of five hardwoods using laser flash apparatus (LFA) was performed to compare and evaluate heat transmittance (U-value) and condensation resistance (CR) of three types of timber and hybrid timber windows. For each window type, 6.1 to 10.3% of the maximum difference in the heat transmittance among cases was calculated. Besides, a linear correlation was found between the U-value and the CR for most cases; thus, the selection of wood species and anatomical direction would improve the hygrothermal performance of timber windows overall. The results also indicated that there were some cases wher... [more]

Ali Ekhtiari, Damian Flynn, Eoin Syron
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtailed wind power, energy system, gas network, Hydrogen, renewable storage
Renewable electricity can be converted into hydrogen via electrolysis also known as power-to-H2 (P2H), which, when injected in the gas network pipelines provides a potential solution for the storage and transport of this green energy. Because of the variable renewable electricity production, the electricity end-user’s demand for “power when required”, distribution, and transmission power grid constrains the availability of renewable energy for P2H can be difficult to predict. The evaluation of any potential P2H investment while taking into account this consideration, should also examine the effects of incorporating the produced green hydrogen in the gas network. Parameters, including pipeline pressure drop, flowrate, velocity, and, most importantly, composition and calorific content, are crucial for gas network management. A simplified representation of the Irish gas transmission network is created and used as a case study to investigate the impact on gas network operation, of hydrogen... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: horizontal section mining, rock burst, steeply inclined extra-thick coal seam, UDEC
Rock bursts have recently become a serious problem in the horizontal section mining of steeply inclined extra-thick coal seams (SIETCSs). However, few studies have been carried out to investigate their mechanisms and prevention. In this study, numerical simulation and field measurements were carried out to investigate the mechanism of rock bursts in the horizontal section mining of an SIETCS. A Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) Trigon model was built, based on the Yaojie No.3 Coal Mine, and calibrated through laboratory tests and RQD methods. The results demonstrate that the coal in the elastic zone around the roof is in a high static stress state, due to the asymmetric clamping and squeezing of the roof and floor. Strong dynamic loads are formed by breakage of the roof and the failure of multiple hinged beam structures during the evolution process of the overlying strata. Rock bursts occur on the roof side when the superimposition of the static stress σs and stress increment σd i... [more]

Purna Chandra Rao, Minyoung Yoon
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst, dehydrogenation, hydrogen storage, hydrogenation, liquid-organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC)
The depletion of fossil fuels and rising global warming challenges encourage to find safe and viable energy storage and delivery technologies. Hydrogen is a clean, efficient energy carrier in various mobile fuel-cell applications and owned no adverse effects on the environment and human health. However, hydrogen storage is considered a bottleneck problem for the progress of the hydrogen economy. Liquid-organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are organic substances in liquid or semi-solid states that store hydrogen by catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes over multiple cycles and may support a future hydrogen economy. Remarkably, hydrogen storage in LOHC systems has attracted dramatically more attention than conventional storage systems, such as high-pressure compression, liquefaction, and absorption/adsorption techniques. Potential LOHC media must provide fully reversible hydrogen storage via catalytic processes, thermal stability, low melting points, favorable hydrogenation... [more]

Keywords: electrical energy storage, electrolysis, hydrogen generator, photovoltaics
In this article the solution based on hydrogen generation to increase the flexibility of energy storage systems is proposed. Operating characteristics of a hydrogen generator with integrated electrical energy storage and a photovoltaic installation were determined. The key role of the electricity storage in the proposed system was to maintain the highest operating efficiency related to the nominal parameters of the hydrogen generator. The hydrogen generators achieved the highest energy efficiency for the nominal operating point at the highest power output. Lead-acid batteries were used to ensure the optimal operating conditions for the hydrogen generator supplied with renewable energy throughout the day. The proposed system reduces significantly the hydrogen generator nominal power and devices in system operate in such a way to improve their efficiency and durability. The relations between individual components and their constraints were determined. The proposed solution is fully in-li... [more]

Keywords: experimental validation, moderate temperature difference, Stirling engine, theoretical model
Stirling engine is a favorable technique in the application of waste heat recovery or cogeneration system. This paper aims at developing a beta-type Stirling engine which is operated at moderate heating temperature (773−973 K). Rhombic drive mechanism is utilized to make coaxial motion of displacer and piston. Based on the proposed dimensions, a theoretical model combining thermodynamic and dynamic analysis is built to predict the performance of the Stirling engine. Thermodynamic analysis deals with variations of properties in each chamber while dynamic analysis handles the resultant shaft torque produced by the Stirling engine. Furthermore, a prototype engine is manufactured, and experimental test is carried out to validate the simulated results in this research. Under heating temperature of 973 K, charged pressure of 8 bar, rotation speed of 1944 rpm, shaft power of 68 W is obtained from the prototype Stirling engine. Power density is calculated to be 1.889 W-c.c.−1 by theoretical pr... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, minimum energy building, passive architecture, renewable energy on-site, renewable energy potential factor
The construction sector is a great contributor to global warming both in new and existing buildings. Minimum energy buildings (MEBs) demand as little energy as possible, with an optimized architectural design, which includes passive solutions. In addition, these buildings consume as low energy as possible introducing efficient facilities. Finally, they produce renewable energy on-site to become zero energy buildings (ZEBs) or even plus zero energy buildings (+ZEB). In this paper, a deep analysis of the energy use and renewable energy production of a social dwelling was carried out based on data measurements. Unfortunately, in residential buildings, most renewable energy production occurs at a different time than energy demand. Furthermore, energy storage batteries for these facilities are expensive and require significant maintenance. The present research proposes a strategy, which involves rescheduling energy demand by changing the habits of the occupants in terms of domestic hot wate... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, corn germ meal, hydrothermal pretreatment
Vegetable oil is extracted from oil rich seeds, such as soybeans. Genetic engineering of green plants to accumulate oil in vegetative tissue is a future source of oil that promises increased land productivity and the use of marginal lands. However, the low concentration of lipids in current engineered plant biomass samples makes the oil extraction process challenging and expensive. In this study, liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment was investigated to enhance oil recovery from the solids and increase enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency of such feedstocks. Corn germ meal was chosen as a model feedstock representing lipid-producing energy crops. Germ meal was pretreated at 160 and 180 °C for 10 and 15 min at 20% w/w solids loading. Enzymatic hydrolysis on the pretreated solid was performed. After pretreatment, the oil concentration increased by 2.2 to 4.2 fold. The most severe pretreatment condition of LHW, at 180 °C for 15 min, gave the maximum oil concentration (9.7%, w/w), the highest tri... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: detailed balance, intermediate band solar cell, tandem solar cell, theoretical efficiency
It is necessary to devise innovative techniques to design new high-performance tandem solar cells to meet increasing energy needs. In this study, the theoretical efficiency of intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) was increased by integrating them with tandem solar cells to produce intermediate band tandem solar cells (IBTSCs). The spectral splitting analysis indicated that the efficient absorption of sub-photon energies was necessary to ensure optimal performance of the IBSCs at each junction of the IBTSC. For this calculation, we assumed all absorption of sub-photon energies are unity. In addition, we applied the variation of absorptivity to the detailed balance limit of a double-junction (DJ) IBTSC. Furthermore, we included the impact of series and shunt resistances of a typical DJ IBTSC to investigate the variations in electrical parameters (short circuit current, open circuit voltage). The performance efficiency also depended on the illumination concentration due to the charge car... [more]

Keywords: clustering, district heating systems, heating energy estimation, sensor absence, virtual sensors
District heating (DH) is an energy efficient building heating system that entails low primary energy consumption and reduced environmental impact. The estimation of the required heating load provides information for operators to control district heating systems (DHSs) efficiently. It also yields historical datasets for intelligent management applications. Based on the existing virtual sensor capabilities to estimate physical variables, performance, etc., and to detect the anomaly detection in building energy systems, this paper proposes a virtual sensor-based method for the estimation of DH energy consumption in a residential building. Practical issues, including sensor absences and limited datasets corresponding to actual buildings, were also analyzed to improve the applicability of virtual sensors in a building. According to certain virtual sensor development processes, model-driven, data-driven, and grey-box virtual sensors were developed and compared in a case study. The grey-box v... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ground heat exchanger, ground source heat pump, heat exchange rate, modular heat exchanger, numerical analysis
Although ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are more efficient than conventional air source heat pump (ASHP) systems, their high initial investment cost makes it difficult to introduce them into small buildings. Therefore, the development of a method for reducing the installation costs of GSHPs for small buildings is essential. This study proposes a modular ground heat exchanger (GHX) for cost reduction and an improved workability of GSHPs. In addition, a numerical model was constructed for the analysis of the performance of the modular GHX. However, to easily introduce the new GHX at the building design stage, the development of a performance prediction method for the introduction of modular GHXs to small buildings is necessary. Therefore, the entering water temperature (EWT) equation was derived from the calculation methods in the heat transfer process, and the ground temperature model was developed in consideration of the operation condition. The numerical results showed that th... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC, high-voltage-gain, interleaving, multistage, PV, voltage multiplier cells
This paper proposes a family of high-voltage-gain step-up dc-dc converters for photovoltaic integration application. The proposed converters are capable of converting the low voltage from input sources to a dc bus. The proposed family is constructed of interleaved single-switch multistage boost converters and voltage multiplier cells (VMC). The proposed converters feature low voltage stress across the components, equal current sharing among all phases, and a smooth input current. Moreover, the proposed family of converters has a modular structure in both the VMC and the boost stage. That is, the VMC can have N number of cells, and the boost stage can have k number of stages. The k can be different in each phase, allowing the designers to integrate two independent renewable energy sources with different output voltages. An example converter was explained, analyzed, and simulated. An 80 W hardware prototype was implemented to confirm the converter’s operation and validate the analysis.

Keywords: gas geochemical characteristics, gas loss, heterogeneity, Large Igneous Province (LIP), noble gas, shale gas evolution
The Weiyuan (WY) and Changning (CN) fields are the largest shale gas fields in the Sichuan Basin. Though the shale gases in both fields are sourced from the Longmaxi Formation, this study found notable differences between them in molecular composition, carbon isotopic composition, and noble gas abundance and isotopic composition. CO2 (av. 0.52%) and N2 (av. 0.94%) were higher in Weiyuan than in Changning by an average of 0.45% and 0.70%, respectively. The δ13C1 (−26.9% to −29.7%) and δ13C2 (−32.0% to −34.9%) ratios in the Changning shale gases were about 8% and 6% heavier than those in Weiyuan, respectively. Both shale gases had similar 3He/4He ratios but different 40Ar/36Ar ratios. These geochemical differences indicated complex geological conditions and shed light on the evolution of the Lonmaxi shale gas in the Sichuan Basin. In this study, we highlight the possible impacts on the geochemical characteristics of gas due to tectonic activity, thermal evolution, and migration. By combi... [more]

Keywords: dynamic programming, electric vehicle, heat pump, optimisation, thermal management
Electric vehicles (EVs) experience a range reduction at low temperatures caused by the impact of cabin heating and a reduction in lithium ion performance. Heat pump equipped vehicles have been shown to reduce heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) consumption and improve low ambient temperature range. Heating the electric battery, to improve its low temperature performance, leads to a reduction in heat availability for the cabin. In this paper, dynamic programming is used to find the optimal battery heating trajectory which can optimise the vehicle’s control for either cabin comfort or battery performance and, therefore, range. Using the strategy proposed in this research, a 6.2% increase in range compared to no battery heating and 5.5% increase in thermal comfort compared to full battery heating was achieved at an ambient temperature at −7 °C.

Keywords: analytical models, benchmarking, data-based models, hybrid models, photovoltaic systems, power forecasting
Accurately forecasting power generation in photovoltaic (PV) installations is a challenging task, due to the volatile and highly intermittent nature of solar-based renewable energy sources. In recent years, several PV power generation forecasting models have been proposed in the relevant literature. However, there is no consensus regarding which models perform better in which cases. Moreover, literature lacks of works presenting detailed experimental evaluations of different types of models on the same data and forecasting conditions. This paper attempts to fill in this gap by presenting a comprehensive benchmarking framework for several analytical, data-based and hybrid models for multi-step short-term PV power generation forecasting. All models were evaluated on the same real PV power generation data, gathered from the realisation of a small scale pilot site in Thessaloniki, Greece. The models predicted PV power generation on multiple horizons, namely for 15 min, 30 min, 60 min, 120... [more]

Keywords: decarbonisation, discourse, European Union, Natural Gas, Slovakia, transit, Ukraine
The COVID-19 pandemic appeared in the midst of developing the European Green Deal, the most ambitious project to decarbonise the EU’s economy to date. Among other issues, the project highlighted the challenges connected to the long-term role of natural gas as a fossil fuel in the European economy. Moreover, the changes to the gas architecture caused by the development of new import infrastructure (especially Nord Stream and its extension, which is currently under construction) put additional pressure on the transit countries, mainly of which are linked to the Brotherhood pipeline. These have been strong supporters of natural gas utilisation and harsh critics of new pipelines that circumvent their territories, as they consider energy transit to be an important part of their energy sectors. This research examines the political discourse on gas transit in Slovakia and Ukraine in order to identify the main arguments connected to these positions. The paper examines a total of 233 textual un... [more]

Keywords: DEM, external geometry types, particle flow profiles, particle size segregation, vertical sinter cooling bed (VSCB)
Good particle flow patterns and uniform particle velocity distributions enhance the performance of heat transfer and smooth flow processes in vertical sinter cooling beds (VSCBs). The effect of three typical geometries, conical, curved and rectangular, on the performance of flow profiles and segregation in a VSCB is investigated comparatively and quantitatively based on the discrete element method (DEM). The evolution of flow profiles and particle segregation directly influence the evenly distributed sinter layers and the efficiency of heat exchange in VSCBs. In this research, a 3D packed bed model is established for the three geometry types to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the influence of structural parameters on the evolution of flow patterns and segregation. The comparison of the effect of the three geometry types on the particle flow process showed that the curved geometry types greatly improve the performance of the flow pattern and size segregation. Keywords: biofuel production, lignin degradation, oil palm empty fruit bunch, physicochemical, thermal pretreatment
Oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) are recoverable lignocellulosic biomass serving as feedstock for biofuel production. The major hurdle in producing biofuel from biomass is the abundance of embedded recalcitrant lignin. Pretreatment is a key step to increase the accessibility of enzymes to fermentable sugars. In this study, thermal pretreatments at moderate temperatures ranging from 150 °C to 210 °C, at different durations (30−120 min) and EFB particle sizes (1−10 mm), were employed to maximize lignin degradation. Observation through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed disruptions in EFB structure and the removal of silica bodies and other impurities upon thermal pretreatment. Remarkable changes on the elemental contents and functional groups occurred, as was evident from the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. The smallest EFB size yielded higher lignin degradation—about 2.3-fold and 1.2-fold higher—than the biggest and moderate tes... [more]
