Experimental Study on Effects of Adjustable Vaned Diffusers on Impeller Backside Cavity of Centrifugal Compressor in CAES
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: adjustable vaned diffusers, centrifugal compressor, impeller backside cavity, variable operating conditions
The impeller backside cavity (IBC) is a unique structure of centrifugal compressor in compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems, which affects the aerodynamic performance of centrifugal compressor, and the angle change of the downstream coupled adjustable vaned diffusers (AVDs) will affect the flow field inside the cavity and compressor performance. This paper relies on the closed test facility of the high-power intercooling compressor to measure static pressure and static temperature at different radii on the static wall of the IBC. The coupling relationship between the IBC and compressor under variable operating conditions is analyzed, and the influence of AVDs on the internal flow in IBC is studied. The results show that static pressure and static temperature rise along the direction of increasing radius, but static temperature drops near the coupling between the impeller outlet and the cavity inlet. Under AVDs’ design angle, static pressure and static temperature at each point,... [more]

Techno-Economic Feasibility of the Longwall Top Coal Caving Method Based on the FTCD Index: A Parametric Case Study in India
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: finite difference method, first top coal caving distance (FTCD), Godavari Valley Coalfield (GVCF), internal rate of return (IRR), longwall top coal caving (LTCC), numerical analysis, sensitivity analysis, thick seam
An extraction method for deep-seated thick seam deposits by underground mining with high resource recovery has remained a great challenge for Indian mining engineers, whereas the longwall top coal caving (LTCC) method has evolved as an effective method for various geo mining conditions in China and other counties. The percentage of top coal recovery (TCR) plays a predominant role in determining the feasibility of LTCC, which relies on the First Top Coal Caving Distance (FTCD). In this paper, the critical geotechnical parameters are identified, numerically simulated, and statistically analyzed, and the FTCD for Indian geo-mining conditions is developed and validated. A financial assessment is conducted, considering 70% top coal recovery at 85% performance level, cost of production escalated by 20% and fall in coal grade by two grades. The internal rate of return (IRR) for LTCC is 30.24% as per the sensitivity analysis where it is only 18% in single pass longwall method. This study contr... [more]

Parametric Study for Thermal and Catalytic Methane Pyrolysis for Hydrogen Production: Techno-Economic and Scenario Analysis
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: catalytic methane pyrolysis, economic analysis, H2 production, process simulation, thermal methane pyrolysis, unit H2 production cost
As many countries have tried to construct a hydrogen (H2) society to escape the conventional energy paradigm by using fossil fuels, methane pyrolysis (MP) has received a lot of attention owing to its ability to produce H2 with no CO2 emission. In this study, a techno-economic analysis including a process simulation, itemized cost estimation, and sensitivity and scenario analysis was conducted for the system of thermal-based and catalyst-based MP (TMP-S1 and CMP-S2), and the system with the additional H2 production processes of carbon (C) gasification and water−gas shift (WGS) reaction (TMPG-S3 and CMPG-S4). Based on the technical performance expressed by H2 and C production rate, the ratio of H2 combusted to supply the heat required and the ratio of reactants for the gasifier (C, Air, and water (H2O)), unit H2 production costs of USD 2.14, 3.66, 3.53, and 3.82 kgH2−1 from TMP-S1, CMP-S2, TMPG-S3, and CMPG-S4, respectively, were obtained at 40% H2 combusted and a reactants ratio for C-A... Design and Experiments of a Galloping-Based Wind Energy Harvester Using Quadruple Halbach Arrays
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electromagnetic, energy harvest, galloping, Halbach array, Wind
This study aims to develop a device for harvesting electrical energy from low-speed natural wind. Four linear Halbach arrays are adopted to design a high-performance galloping harvester with the advantage of high durability and efficiency at low-frequency vibrations. The results of magnetic field analysis reveal that there are optimal sizes of the main and transit magnets of the Halbach arrays and coil to obtain the maximum magnetic flux density normal to the coil. The experimental and simulation results show that the electrical external load resistance significantly affects the vibration amplitude and the galloping onset velocity of the harvester. The results also reveal that the performance of the original design using the quadruple Halbach array was lower than that of the existing harvester because of the heavy magnet mass embedded in the tip prism. The modified design, reducing mass, improved the performance by four times compared to the original design.

Techno-Economic Analysis of Fast Pyrolysis of Date Palm Waste for Adoption in Saudi Arabia
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Biofuels, date palm waste, fluidized bed reactor, pyrolysis, techno-economic
Date palm trees, being an important source of nutrition, are grown at a large scale in Saudi Arabia. The biomass waste of date palm, discarded of in a non-environmentally-friendly manner at present, can be used for biofuel generation through the fast pyrolysis technique. This technique is considered viable for thermochemical conversion of solid biomass into biofuels in terms of the initial investment, production cost, and operational cost, as well as power consumption and thermal application cost. In this study, a techno-economic analysis has been performed to assess the feasibility of converting date palm waste into bio-oil, char, and burnable gases by defining the optimum reactor design and thermal profile. Previous studies concluded that at an optimum temperature of 525 °C, the maximum bio-oil, char and gases obtained from pyrolysis of date palm waste contributed 38.8, 37.2 and 24% of the used feed stock material (on weight basis), respectively, while fluidized bed reactor exhibited... Proposed Commutation Method for Performance Improvement of Brushless DC Motor
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BLDC, commutation method, current harmonics, efficiency improvement, reduction acoustic noise
This study focused on the efficiency improvement and acoustic noise reduction of brushless DC (BLDC) motors by reducing current harmonics using a novel BLDC commutation method. To achieve these goals, we designed an improved 150° commutation method for a three-phase permanent magnet BLDC motor that can improve the current waveform. Although the 120° commutation method is generally employed for BLDC motors, an improved 150° commutation method is introduced to operate the BLDC with increased efficiency and acoustic noise similar to a brushless AC motor. This study investigated the attributes of various commutation methods, both theoretically and experimentally, to determine the optimal commutation method. The results of this study indicate that the improved 150° commutation method is optimal in terms of harmonic attributes and reduced torque ripple, allowing it to improve motor efficiency and reduce acoustic noise.

Aspects of Selecting Appropriate Conveyor Belt Strength
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: belt tensile strength, conveyor belt, theoretical model, transition section
Breaks in the so-called “continuous” (unspliced) belt sections, and not in the spliced areas, are infrequent but do happen in practice. This article presents some aspects, which may account for such breaks in conveyor belts. It indicates the so-called “sensitive points” in design, especially in the transition section of the conveyor belt and in identifying the actual strength of the belt. The presented results include the influence of the width of a belt specimen on the identified belt tensile strength. An increase in the specimen width entails a decrease in the belt strength. The research involved develops a universal theoretical model of the belt on a transition section of a troughed conveyor in which, in the case of steel-cord belts, the belt is composed of cords and layers of rubber, and in the case of a textile belt, of narrow strips. The article also describes geometrical forces in the transition section of the belt and an illustrative analysis of loads acting on the belt. Attent... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BESS, GHG emission, LCoE, micro-grid, PV system
This paper discusses the simulation framework developed for an in-campus pilot micro-grid at MCAST, Malta, to enhance its efficiency and reliability. One year of real-time metered data were used to arrive at the load curves, categorize the loads as essential and non-essential ones, and decide the micro-grid domain within MCAST. The potential scenarios were modeled to observe the behavior of the present status of the micro-grid, with an increased photovoltaic (PV) generation capacity, by using an optimum battery storage system with a diesel generator of suitable capacity and finally integrating electric vehicles (EVs) to discuss the potential of vehicle to grid (V2G) operation modes. The existing building management system (BMS) of MCAST was interfaced within the micro-grid to introduce the geographic information system (GIS) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) for developing an intelligent 3D model of the micro-grid. The Viability of Providing 24-Hour Electricity Access to Off-Grid Island Communities in the Philippines
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electricity access, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rural electrification, socio-economic viability, techno-economic viability
Techno-economic viability assessments of rural electrification projects, especially those that integrate renewable energy technologies, typically look at system design optimization that would yield the most favorable cost and investment scenarios. However, the true viability of these projects relies more importantly on their impact to the rural communities while ensuring positive financial returns to the project developers. This paper aims to expand the viability assessment of electrification projects in off-grid island communities in order to mainly address the apparently opposing needs of the major stakeholders at play by developing a viability assessment framework considering the techno-economic dimensions as well as the socio-economic impacts to the consumers. The analysis follows a two-phase approach, where system design optimization and financial impact calculations are done in the first phase and the socio-economic viability is accomplished in the second phase. Results suggest t... [more]

Hybrid Physics-Based Adaptive Kalman Filter State Estimation Framework
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anomaly detection, asymmetry index, Kalman Filter, load dynamics, measurement gross errors, measurement innovation
State-of-the art physics-model based dynamic state estimation generally relies on the assumption that the system’s transition matrix is always correct, the one that relates the states in two different time instants, which might not hold always on real-life applications. Further, while making such assumptions, state-of-the-art dynamic state estimation models become unable to discriminate among different types of anomalies, as measurement gross errors and sudden load changes, and thus automatically leads the state estimator framework to inaccuracy. Towards the solution of this important challenge, in this work, a hybrid adaptive dynamic state estimator framework is presented. Based on the Kalman Filter formulation, measurement innovation analytical-based tests are presented and integrated into the state estimator framework. Gross measurement errors and sudden load changes are automatically detected, identified, and corrected, providing continuous updating of the state estimator. Towards... [more]

Changes in Thornthwaite Moisture Index and Reactive Soil Movements under Current and Future Climate Scenarios—A Case Study
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: climate change, expansive soils, ground movement, suction depth, Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI)
Expansive soils go through significant volume changes due to seasonal moisture variations resulting in ground movements. The ground movement related problems are likely to worsen in the future due to climate change. It is important to understand and incorporate likely future changes in design to ensure the resilience of structures built on such soils. However, there has been a limited amount of work quantifying the effect of climate change on expansive soils movement and related behaviour of structures. The Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI) is one of the commonly used climate classifiers in quantifying the effect of atmospheric boundary on soil behaviour. Using the long-term weather data and predicted future changes under different emission scenarios, a series of TMI maps are developed for South Australia. Potential changes in ground movement are then estimated for a selected area using a simplified methodology where the effect of future climate is captured through changes in TMI. Resu... [more]

DC-DC 3SSC-A-Based Boost Converter: Analysis, Design, and Experimental Validation
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: 3SSC type-A, boost converter, DC-DC converter, right-half-plane (RHP) zero, three-state switching cell (3SSC)
A detailed analysis and validation of the DC-DC boost converter based on the three-state switching cell (3SSC) type-A are presented in this paper. The study of this topology is justified by the small amount of research that employs 3SSC-A and the advantages inherent to 3SSC-based converters, such as the division of current stresses between the semiconductors, the distribution of thermal losses, and the high-density power. Therefore, a complete static analysis of the converter is described, as well as the study of all voltage and current stresses in the semiconductors, the development of a loss model in all components, and a comparison with other step-up structures. Additionally, the small-signal model validation is accomplished by comparing the theoretical frequency response and the simulated AC sweep analysis. Finally, implementing a simple controller structure, the converter is experimentally validated through a 600 W prototype, where its overall efficiency is examined for various lo... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: custom design, driving simulator tests, EMG, steering system, universal design, vehicle safety
The subject of this article is the design of a nonstandard steering system in cars. The applied methodology takes into account universal design, ensuring the greatest possible adaptation of the steering system to potential users, and at the same time, thanks to the specific nature of the designed steering device, it also assumes a special approach allowing for individual adjustment of the steering system to the needs and limitations of drivers with lower-limb disabilities. It is implemented through the “custom design” methodology. This article presents the impact of the design features of the multifunction steering wheel on the correctness of driving, as well as the level of load on selected muscles of the upper limbs responsible for operating the steering wheel. The tests were carried out on a dynamic simulator of a motor vehicle using the electromyography (EMG) technique, which enables the measurement of muscle load. Role of Architectural Design in Creating Circadian-Effective Interior Settings
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: architectural design parameters, circadian-effective lighting, human-centric lighting, standards and recommendations
Daylight variability throughout the day makes it an ideal light source for the stimulation of humans’ circadian systems. However, the key criteria, including proper quantity, quality, and hours of access to daylight, are not always present inside the built environment. Therefore, artificial light is necessary to complement the human’s visual and non-visual needs for light. Architectural design parameters, such as window area, orientation, glazing material, and surface reflectance alter the characteristics of both daylight and artificial light inside buildings. These parameters and their impact on lighting design should be considered from the early design stages to attain a circadian-effective design. In response to this need, a design approach called Human-Centric Lighting (HCL) was introduced. HCL places humans, and their visual and non-visual needs, in the center of the design process. It manipulates the light-related factors, such as spectrum and intensity, within the built environm... [more]

High-Frequency Non-Invasive Magnetic Field-Based Condition Monitoring of SiC Power MOSFET Modules
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: condition monitoring, current distribution, failure onset, magnetic field, reliability, silicon carbide, wire bond
Current distribution anomaly can be used to indicate the onset of package-related failures modes in Silicon Carbide power MOSFET modules. In this paper, we propose to obtain the wire bond’s magnetic field profile using an array of Tunnel Magneto-Resistance (TMR) sensors, and characterise the small changes in the current density distribution to find the onset of the wire bond degradation processes, including wire bond lift-off, wire bond cracking, and wire bond fracture. We propose a novel condition monitoring technique where a non-galvanic high-bandwidth sensing and a reliability model monitor the health of the power switches. We designed a dedicated calibration set-up to examine the sensor array and calibrated to demonstrate the adequate sensitivity to a minimum 5% current anomaly detection in a single wire bond of the switching devices operating with 50 kHz switching frequency. We use a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experimental set-up to replicate wire bond-related failures in a 1200 V... [more]

Design of the Joint Motor for an Articulated Robot Considering Joint Load Characteristics
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: articulated robot, joint motor design, rigid body dynamics, thermal analysis, torque estimation
In this paper, we propose a method to efficiently design joint motors, which are the key elements that drive a cooperative robot. Designing joint motors with more power than the required capacity increases the volume and weight of the robot. On the other hand, designing joint motors with less power than the required capacity can lead to failure and safety accidents because of high temperature rise and mechanical instability. Therefore, in this study, the required capacities of the joint motors were determined through a dynamic analysis of the robot system and incorporated in the joint motor design specifications. An electromagnetic analysis was performed during design using the two-dimensional finite element method, and the detailed dimensions of the motor were determined using the response surface method, which is an optimal design technique. The thermal characteristics of the joint motor were evaluated using a thermal equivalent circuit. The designed joint motors were manufactured, a... [more]

A Real-Time Energy Management System Design for a Developed PV-Based Distributed Generator Considering the Grid Code Requirements in Turkey
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distributed generation, energy management, grid code, islanding detection, PV system
Each country must determine the Grid Code conditions and apply these criteria to integrate distributed generation (DG) systems into the existing electricity grid and to ensure a stable power system. Thus, experimental studies are required to provide an effective, national, and specific Grid Code. In this study, the Turkish Grid Code’s electrical criteria were examined, and the application of these criteria was carried out on a developed PV-based DG. A real-time energy management system (RTEMS) was proposed in the study. Electrical parameters on the developed DG were monitored in real-time by considering IEEE 1547, IEEE 929−2000, and Turkey’s electrical criteria. A practical grid code study was firstly investigated in detail about the Turkish Grid Code by a developed real-time monitoring-control and protection system. The proposed RTEMS method in the study is implemented as an inverter-resident system; thus, it provides advantages over many energy management systems embedded in the inve... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: convection, corrosion, DCLL blanket, liquid metal blankets, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), tritium, turbulence, WCLL blanket
According to the most recently revised European design strategy for DEMO breeding blankets, mature concepts have been identified that require a reduced technological extrapolation towards DEMO and will be tested in ITER. In order to optimize and finalize the design of test blanket modules, a number of issues have to be better understood that are related to the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) interactions of the liquid breeder with the strong magnetic field that confines the fusion plasma. The aim of the present paper is to describe the state of the art of the study of MHD effects coupled with other physical phenomena, such as tritium transport, corrosion and heat transfer. Both numerical and experimental approaches are discussed, as well as future requirements to achieve a reliable prediction of these processes in liquid metal blankets.

Impact of Charging Electric Vehicles under Different State of Charge Levels and Extreme Conditions
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distribution systems, electric vehicles, Optimization, power systems, smart grid, smart homes, techno-economic impact, voltage stability
High penetration levels of Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) could cause stress on the network and might violate the limits and constraints under extreme conditions, such as exceeding power and voltage limits on transformers and power lines. This paper defines extreme conditions as the state of a load or network that breaks the limits of the constraints in an optimization model. Once these constraints are violated, the optimization algorithm might not work correctly and might not converge to a feasible solution, especially when the complexity of the system increases and includes nonlinearities. Hence, the algorithm may not help in mitigating the impact of penetrating PEVs under extreme conditions. To solve this problem, an original algorithm is suggested that is able to adapt the constraints’ limits according to the energy demand and the energy needed to charge the PEVs. Different case scenarios are studied for validation purposes, such as charging PEVs under different state of charge l... [more]

Determining Actuator Requirements for Cyclic Varying Pitch Propeller for Ships
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cyclic varying pitch, propeller, ship
In marine applications, a cyclic varying pitch (CVP) propeller is a propeller in which the propeller blade can be cyclic-pitched. This cyclic pitching of the propeller blades is used to adapt to the local flow conditions in the non-uniform wake field that the propeller operates in, behind the ship hull. This has the potential to improve the performance of the propulsion system relative to a propeller which has fixed pitch for each revolution. The potential performance improvements include increasing the propulsion efficiency and reducing the cavitation, pressure pulses, vibrations and noise problems. However, the CVP propeller is not on the market today, and several challenges have to be addressed before the CVP propeller may be realized. One of these challenges is how to design the individual cyclic pitch mechanism for the propeller. However, before the cyclic pitch mechanism can be designed, it is necessary to know the requirements for it, such as the required pitching power and torq... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: combined transport, intermodal transport, piggyback, safety
The article presented the issue of securing semi-trailer trucks and trailers during their transport using intermodal railway wagons as a part of combined transport. This issue was analysed in different operational conditions related to loading level, cross-winds influence, inertia forces due to the emergency braking, and track curvature. According to general rules of loading and securing cargo, described in the internal and UIC regulations, the transported load should be positioned and secured with minimised risk of undesirable displacement or rolling over during transport. Basic analysis showed that adverse conditions such as strong winds or emergency braking may require adequate additional cargo protection. The lack thereof may result in a severe accident or damage to the transported vehicle or the nearby structures. Experimental Fitting of Redesign Electrified Turbocompressor of a Novel Mild Hybrid Power Train for a City Car
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: decoupling turbocharger, ebooster, experimental test, feasibility analysis
As part of a project for the realization of a hybrid vehicle with an innovative power train system, the proposal presented is to disconnect the turbocharger group and study the different behavior of the compressor and turbine, so decoupled. In an actual turbocharger, when the power of the turbine exceeds that required by the compressor, the wastegate valve opens. In this way, a part of the flue gases does not evolve into a turbine and limits the power generated. In the solution proposed here (the paper considers only “compressor side”) all the flow rate of the flue gases is processed by the turbine. In this way, for each rpms of the IC engine, the turbine generates more power than that required by the compressor. This makes it possible to use this surplus of power for the auxiliaries and/or to recharge the battery pack of the considered hybrid vehicle. An additional advantage is, thanks to this surplus generated, that the battery pack can be smaller and can be recharged while driving.... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: DHW, domestic hot water tank, Energy Efficiency, tank cold water inlet, tank obstacles, thermal stratification
Domestic hot water preparation is one of the main sources of energy consumption in households. One of the most important elements of domestic hot water (DHW) preparation installation is the storage tank. Its design can significantly affect the efficiency of the system and energy consumption for hot water preparation. This paper presents the results of an experimental study to examine seven different designs of the cold water inlet to the storage tank and the use of two types of obstacles inside this tank placed at three different heights. The number of stratification and the energy efficiency of the system for each variant were examined. Additionally, tests were carried out for different profiles of hot water consumption in order to examine the temperature changes in the DHW tank. A system with an inlet, as an elbow facing down with a single plate, turned out to be the most advantageous variant (3−8% increase in energy efficiency compared to the basic inlet variant). Adsorption chillers are a promising alternative to traditional compressor-based devices. Adsorption chillers can be supplied with low- or medium-temperature waste heat or heat from renewable energy sources. In addition, they can be used for water desalination purposes. Thus, the adsorption chillers are unique devices that meet essential problems of the modern world: a need to limit the negative impact of humankind on the natural environment and growing problems with access to drinking water. However, adsorption chillers also have disadvantages, including ineffective operation and large size. Therefore, in this paper, the influence of steam utilization on the operation of an adsorption chiller with water desalination function was investigated experimentally, which has not been done before.
