A Dual Resonance Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvester for Wide Harvested Frequency Range with Enhanced Output Power
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dual resonance frequencies, enhanced “band-pass” harvested power, independent resonant frequencies, vibration electromagnetic energy harvester, wide harvested frequency range
A dual resonance vibration electromagnetic energy harvester (EMEH) is proposed in this paper to extend frequency range. Compared with the conventional dual resonance harvester, the proposed system realizes an enhanced “band-pass” harvesting characteristic by increasing the relative displacement between magnet and coil among two resonance frequencies with a significant improvement in the average harvested power. Furthermore, two resonant frequencies are decoupled in the proposed system, which leads to a more straightforward design. The proposed dual resonance EMEH is constructed with a tubular dual spring-mass structure. It is designed with a serpentine planar spring and the coil position is optimized for higher power density with an overall size of 53.9 cm3 for the dual resonance EMEH. It realizes an output power of 11 mW at the first resonant frequency of 58 Hz, 14.9 mW at the second resonant frequency of 74.5 Hz, and 0.52 mW at 65 Hz, which is in the middle of the two resonance frequ... Design of Ensemble Forecasting Models for Home Energy Management Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy in buildings, energy management systems, energy systems, ensemble models, forecasting, Machine Learning, multi-objective genetic algorithms
The increasing levels of energy consumption worldwide is raising issues with respect to surpassing supply limits, causing severe effects on the environment, and the exhaustion of energy resources. Buildings are one of the most relevant sectors in terms of energy consumption; as such, efficient Home or Building Management Systems are an important topic of research. This study discusses the use of ensemble techniques in order to improve the performance of artificial neural networks models used for energy forecasting in residential houses. The case study is a residential house, located in Portugal, that is equipped with PV generation and battery storage and controlled by a Home Energy Management System (HEMS). It has been shown that the ensemble forecasting results are superior to single selected models, which were already excellent. A simple procedure was proposed for selecting the models to be used in the ensemble, together with a heuristic to determine the number of models.

Integrated Capacitive Deionization and Humidification-Dehumidification System for Brackish Water Desalination
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: brackish water, capacitive deionization, desalination, humidification-dehumidification, hybrid system
A hybrid capacitive deionization and humidification-dehumidification (CDI−HDH) desalination system is theoretically investigated for the desalination of brackish water. The CDI system works with two basic operations: adsorption and regeneration. During adsorption, water is desalted, and during the regeneration process the ions from electrodes are detached and flow out as wastewater, which is higher in salt concentration. This wastewater still contains water but cannot be treated again via the CDI unit because CDI cannot treat higher-salinity waters. The discarding of wastewater from CDI is not a good option, since every drop of water is precious. Therefore, CDI wastewater is treated using waste heat in a process that is less sensitive to high salt concentrations, such as humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination. Therefore, in this study, CDI wastewater was treated using the HDH system. Using the combined system (CDI−HDH), this study theoretically investigated brackish water o... [more]

Design and Operation of a Polygeneration System in Spanish Climate Buildings under an Exergetic Perspective
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AHU exergy analysis, exergy in office buildings, exergy polygeneration indicators
This work defines and analyzes the performance of a polygeneration system in five different locations in Spain to maintain the thermal comfort and air quality of an office building. The facility is based on a chiller and a CHP engine with PV panels that provide almost all the electricity demand of the chiller. According to the energy performance analysis results, the installation working in Bilbao is a full polygeneration system since no electricity needs to be imported from the grid in summer. To quantify the energy savings related to a separated production facility, polygeneration indicators (percentage of savings PES/PExS and equivalent electric efficiency EEE/EExE) have been calculated in energy and exergy terms. The main motivation for using exergy is based on the ambiguity that can arise from the point of view of the First Law. As expected, the exergetic indicators have lower values than the energetic ones. In addition, an in-depth analysis was conducted for the air-handling unit... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic feasibility indicators, grid-connected, Near East University Hospital, Northern Cyprus, orientation angles, PV system
The growth of populations and economy in Northern Cyprus has led to continuing utilization of fossil fuels as the primary source of electricity, which will raise environmental pollution. Thus, utilizing renewable energy, particularly solar energy, might be a solution to minimize this issue. This paper presents the potential of grid-connected solar PV power generation at Near East University Hospital (NEU Hospital), one of the largest and leading medical facilities in Northern Cyprus, to meet the energy demand during the daytime to reduce energy bills. For this purpose, the first objective of the study is to evaluate the solar energy potential as a power source for the NEU Hospital based on four datasets (actual measurement, Satellite Application Facility on Climate Monitoring (CMSAF), Surface Radiation Data Set-Heliosat (SARAH), and ERA-5, produced by the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast). The results showed that the solar resource of the selected location is categoriz... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: buoyancy-distributed floating foundation, comprehensive utilization, hybrid floating system, modular design
The comprehensive utilization of offshore renewable energies is an effective way to solve the intermittency and variability of power supply. This paper aims to present a hybrid floating system (HFS) based on a modular buoyancy-distributed floating foundation (BDFF) that can be equipped with a horizontal-axis wind turbine, solar panels, and wave energy converters (WEC). A simplified test model with a Froude scale ratio of 1/10 is employed to perform the experiments in a deep-water basin to validate the numerical results computed from the code program ANSYS AQWA based on the potential flow theory. The Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) under regular waves are compared to evaluate the hydrodynamic performance. There is a good agreement in the surge, pitch, and heave RAOs for experiments and the numerical simulation, with a maximum of 6.45 degrees per meter for the pitch motion. Furthermore, the mooring tensions in the time domain are analyzed under different wave conditions. The tension R... [more]

Design and Evaluation of High-Temperature Well Cementing Slurry System Based on Fractal Theory
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: accumulation model, cementing, fractal, high temperature cement slurry
The efficient development of oil and gas resources is inseparable from the progress of drilling technology and the safety of the long life cycle of wellbore. At present, exploration and development is expanding to deep and ultra-deep areas. The long life cycle safety of deep and ultra-deep wells is mainly realized by the sealing performance of cement slurry. Additionally, the accumulation degree of cement slurry particles is closely related to sealing performance. Based on fractal theory, an accumulation model of continuous distribution of additive material particles was designed, which can determine the range of fractal dimension necessary to realize the tight stacking and guide the proportion of solid admixture. The formulation of high temperature-resistant cement slurry was prepared by designing the ratio of solid admixture and optimizing the high temperature-resistant liquid admixture. The evaluation of engineering and temperature resistance of the cement slurry proves the rational... [more]

Performance Assessment of Using Thermoelectric Generators for Waste Heat Recovery from Vapor Compression Refrigeration Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: de-superheating, performance assessment, refrigeration, thermoelectric generators, vapor compression, waste heat recovery
This article reports on an experimental analysis and performance assessment of using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for waste heat recovery from residential vapor compression refrigeration systems. The analysis shows that there is a good opportunity for waste heat recovery using TEGs by de-superheating refrigerant after the compressor. Design and manufacturing of a de-superheater unit consisting of a tube and plate heat exchanger and thermoelectric generator modules (HE-TEGs) have been performed and integrated in an experimental test rig of R134a refrigeration cycle. Experimental assessment of the performance parameters, as compared to the basic refrigeration system, reveals that the overall coefficient of performance (COP) using HE-TEGs desuperheater unit increases by values ranging from 17% to 32% depending on the condenser and evaporator loads. Exergy analysis shows that the enhancement is attributed to reduction in the exergy destruction in the condenser and compressor due to low... [more]

Investigation on Energy Flow Characteristics of Fuel Cell System Based on Real Vehicle Tests
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: energy flow, energy management strategy, fuel cell, operating characteristic, vehicle test
For fuel cell hybrid vehicles, the energy distribution mechanism of the fuel cell and power battery should reasonably allocate the power output of the fuel cell and power battery, optimize the efficiency of both and control the power battery SOC to fluctuate within a reasonable range. To test the energy flow and operation characteristics of the powertrain of two hybrid car models on the market, two test vehicles (called vehicle A and vehicle B in this paper) are tested on an AIP 4WD chassis dynamometer under constant power and the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle-Passenger cycle condition, respectively. The test results show that vehicle A has a smaller power battery SOC variation interval and a lower variable rate than vehicle B. The cumulative power battery output energy of vehicle B is more significant than that of vehicle A. More importantly, the current rare public test reports of fuel cell vehicles make this study very valuable. This paper has important reference significance... [more]

Evaluation of the Explosion Pressure Parameters in Flameproof Enclosures under the Pressure Piling Condition
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: explosion resistance, gas channel, pressure piling
Explosion resistance is one of the most important performances for all flameproof enclosures. Pressure piling requires the flameproof enclosures to withstand explosion pressure higher than the design pressure. In order to study the explosion parameters in a flameproof enclosure under pressure piling, two experimental setups were prepared based on the theoretical analysis of the mechanism of pressure piling. One setup simulated the condition that the interior of a flameproof box is isolated by a baffle with a small hole. Another setup simulated the condition that a large number of electrical components were installed inside an explosion-proof box. The experimental result showed that the explosion pressure increased significantly in a very short time under pressure piling. When an explosion occurred in a cavity, the pressure wave of the explosion propagated faster than the flame propagation, and the pressure wave was transmitted to another cavity through a gas channel between the two cav... Techno-Economic Analysis of Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Plus Battery Power Plant
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: LCOE, lithium-ion battery, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar photovoltaics
Decarbonizing the global power sector is a key requirement to fight climate change. Consequently, the deployment of renewable energy (RE) technologies, notably solar photovoltaic (PV), is proceeding rapidly in many regions. However, in many of these regions, the evening peak is predominantly being served by fossil-fired generators. Furthermore, as the evening peak is projected to increase in the coming years, there are plans to install more fossil-fired peaking generators. A cleaner alternative is to enable solar PV plants to provide clean power after sunset by pairing them with large-scale lithium-ion batteries to provide evening peak generation. In this work, we performed a techno-economic analysis of a solar PV plus battery (PVB) power plant using the island of Mauritius as a case study. We assessed the impacts of the battery size, inverter loading ratio (ILR), tracking type, and curtailment on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). The main results show that the LCOE of utility-... [more]

Teeth Arrangement and Pole−Slot Combination Design for PMLSM Detent Force Reduction
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: detent force reduction, finite element analysis (FEA), permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM), pole–slot combination, response surface methodology (RSM), teeth arrangement
This paper introduces and investigates a new design method that employs both teeth arrangement and pole−slot combination to reduce the detent force of permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PMLSMs) for precision position control. The proposed topology is a 10-pole, 12-slot-based PMLSM comprising two sections that significantly reduce the detent force without implementing a skewing design. It was analytically and experimentally confirmed that the proposed design effectively reduces detent force with a negligible sacrifice of mover length. The general characteristics and servo performance of the proposed PMLSM were experimentally examined and then discussed.

Keywords: adsorption chiller, heat and mass transfer, heat exchanger, HEX heat capacity
In the face of increasing demands with regard to the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix, adsorption chillers are becoming a potentially important part of the energy transition. A key component of this type of equipment is the heat exchanger in the adsorption bed, the design of which affects both heat and mass transfer. This study includes an analysis of the geometry and materials used to manufacture such heat exchangers. The geometry analysis is mainly based on the evaluation of the impact of the different dimensions of the exchanger components on heat and mass transfer in the bed. The second part of the study focuses on material-related issues where the main emphasis is on the analysis of the thermal inertia of the exchanger. The paper analyses the latest research on the design of exchangers in adsorption beds, mainly from 2015−2021. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: intelligent robots, mechatronic systems, mobile robots, robot design, robotics in intelligent vehicle and highway systems
For autonomous driving research, using a scaled vehicle platform is a viable alternative compared to a full-scale vehicle. Systematic Design and Circuit Analysis of Lightning Impulse Voltage Generation on Low-Inductance Loads
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: circuit design, Glaninger’s circuit, high-voltage tests, lightning impulse voltages, low-inductance load, reactor, transformer windings
The well-known circuit for the generation of lightning impulse voltage (LIV) on low-inductance loads was introduced by Glaninger in 1975, and the circuit component selection was proposed by Feser. However, the circuit and the approach for the component selection have some difficulties for which further adjustment is required for obtaining the waveform parameters according to the standard requirement. In this paper, an extended Glaninger’s circuit with an additional series resistor is proposed. Furthermore, a systematic design and circuit analysis of LIV generation for low-inductance loads are developed. With the help of a circuit simulator, the circuit analysis for the component selection is described. The validity of the proposed circuit was confirmed by some experimental results in comparison with the simulated ones. The proposed circuit and component selection provide not only the generation waveform according to the standard requirement but also other promising performances in term... [more]

Design and Assessment of ADRC-Based Autopilot for Energy-Efficient Ship Steering
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: ADRC methodology, full-scale ship model, ship autopilot design
This paper looks at a typical problem encountered in the process of designing an automatic ship’s course stabilisation system with the use of a relatively new methodology referred to as the Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC). The main advantage of this approach over classic autopilots based on PID algorithms, still in the majority, is that it eliminates the tuning problem and, thus, ensures a much better average performance of the ship in various speed, loading, nautical and weather conditions during a voyage. All of these factors call for different and often dynamically variable autopilot parameters, which are difficult to assess, especially by the ship’s crew or owner. The original result of this article is that the required controller parameters are approximated based on some canonical model structure and analysis of the hydrodynamic properties of a wide class of ships. Another novelty is the use of a fully verified, realistic numerical hydrodynamic model of the ship as a s... [more]

Design and Implementation of an Electric Skibus Line in North Italy
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bus charging infrastructure, electric bus, energy bus consumption, public transport electrification, transportation
To enhance the current Public Transport (PT) service in the northern Italian region of Lombardy, this work tries to plan fully a new electric Skibus line connecting the cities of Santa Caterina and Livigno. As a first try outside the city environment, the electrification study is set on a limited mountain zone hence featured by steep grades and cold temperatures. In the first part of the paper, the energy consumed by an electric bus working in such a context is assessed, and from the learned outcomes, proper charging infrastructure is proposed. From the found results, the introduction of a new electric bus line in the chosen region seems feasible. Finally, in the last part of the work the performances of an electric bus fleet are compared with that of a diesel one, in terms of fuel costs and Well-to-Wheel (WTW) emissions. The results prove that an electric fleet would be more convenient for both the economic and the environmental aspects.

Numerical Investigation of Transient Flow Characteristics in a Centrifugal Compressor Stage with Variable Inlet Guide Vanes at Low Mass Flow Rates
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: centrifugal compressor stage, modal decomposition, positive pre-swirl, unstable flow, variable inlet guide vanes
This study numerically investigates the beneficial effects of positive pre-swirl on the aerodynamic performance and internal flow field in a centrifugal compressor stage with variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) at low mass flow rates. Four positions of VIGV are considered, including 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° angle. The latter three positions of VIGV induce positive pre-swirl. Numerical results show that as positive pre-swirl increases, the aerodynamic performance curve of the stage moves in the low mass flow rate direction. In the three cases of positive pre-swirl, there was an improvement of approximately 9.95% of stall/surge margin greater than in conditions with no pre-swirl. The regulation of IGV can effectively improve the unstable flow of the compressor stage at low mass flow rates. A low frequency that has a great influence on the internal flow of the compressor stage is found, and the unstable flow caused by low frequency is analyzed by the combination of streamline distribution, sp... A Step-by-Step Design for Low-Pass Input Filter of the Single-Stage Converter
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AC/AC, low-pass input filter, parameter design, single-stage converter
Active power factor correction converters are often introduced as the front stage of power electronic equipment to improve the power factor and eliminate higher harmonics. A Boost or Buck-Boost converter operating in discontinuous current mode is always adopted to achieve high power factor correction. In addition, the input current contains a large amount of higher harmonics, and a low-pass input filter is commonly adopted to filter it out. In this paper, a single-stage high-frequency AC/AC converter is taken as an example to demonstrate the design method of a passive low-pass filter. Firstly, the input side of the grid needs to meet the power factor and harmonic requirements. The preset parameters are set to a range to characterize the performance of the LC filter. The quantitative design method of input filter is proposed and summarized. Moreover, the sensitivity of the filter parameters is analyzed, providing a direction in practical applications. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dielectric strength, distribution class, FEM, high-voltage apparatus, insulation design, partial discharge, real-time monitoring, vacuum degree, VI
The internal pressure of a vacuum interrupter (VI) is increased by arc heat, ceramic cracking, gas leakage, and manufacturing defects. Accordingly, the dielectric strength of VI rapidly decreases. To improve the reliability of power transmission, efficient maintenance through the real-time monitoring of the vacuum degree is essential. However, real-time monitoring of the vacuum degree is difficult, and related research is scarce. Additionally, due to the insulation problems of this technology, there are few commercially available products. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for real-time monitoring of the vacuum degree and an insulation supplement design for a distribution class VI. First, dielectric experiments were conducted to identify the section in which the dielectric strength of the VI rapidly decreased according to the vacuum degree. Second, for real-time monitoring of the VI, several factors were proposed through the partial discharge in the VI, while the capacitance char... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CO2 conversion, irreversibility, methanation, reactor design, water removal
The inevitable nexus between energy use and CO2 emission necessitates the development of sustainable energy systems. The conversion of CO2 to CH4 using green H2 in power-to-gas applications in such energy systems has attracted much interest. In this context, the present study provides a thermodynamic insight into the effect of water removal on CO2 conversion and irreversibility within a CO2 methanation reactor. A fixed-bed reactor with one intermediate water removal point, representing two reactors in series, was modeled by a one-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous model. Pure CO2 or a mixture of CO2 and methane, representing a typical biogas mixture, were used as feed. For short reactors, both the maximum conversion and the largest irreversibilities were observed when the water removal point was located in the middle of the reactor. However, as the length of the reactor increased, the water removal point with the highest conversion was shifted towards the end of the reactor, accompanied by... [more]
