March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fractional slot motors, high power density motors, rotor losses, slot-pole combinations
Fractional slot, PMSM motors with a properly designed electromagnetic circuit allow for obtaining high power density factors (more than 4 kW per 1 kg of total motor weight). The selection of the number of magnetic poles to the specific dimensions and operating conditions of the motor, as well as the number of slots for the selected number of magnetic poles is the subject of the analysis in this article. This issue is extremely important because it affects the mass of the motor, the value of shaft torque, shaft power and the value of rotor losses. The aim of the work is to select solutions with the highest values of power density factor and, at the same time, the lowest values of rotor losses. The object of the study is a fractional slot PMSM motor with an external solid rotor core with surface permanent magnets (SPM). Motor weight is approximately 10 kg, outer diameter is 200 mm and a maximum power is 50 kW at 4800 r/min. The article analyzes the selection of magnetic poles in the rang... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EV-WPT, frequency splitting, magnetic coupling, multi-band, system design
Due to the effects of splitting frequency and cross coupling, the resonant frequency of the WPT system usually deviates from the given frequency band, and the system operating at the given frequency band suffers a very low output power. Ensuring that electric vehicle wireless power transfer (EV-WPT) systems operate at a resonant state is the prerequisite for efficient energy transfer. For this purpose, a novel design method by manipulating the eigenstate parameters is proposed in this paper. The proposed system can make a EV-WPT system with arbitrary coil successfully to resonate at any given bands, not just a single band. Therefore, the method designed in this article cannot only eliminate the problem of low power caused by frequency deviation, but also realize the application requirements of multiple frequency bands. Firstly, this article establishes an accurate state space model of an n-coil fully coupled EV-WPT system, and after that, the analytical current response on each circuit... [more]

Keywords: COP, fin heat sink, performance improvement, thermoelectric cooling
The thermoelectric refrigeration system is an application of the Peltier effect, and good refrigeration performance is dependent on effective heat dissipation performance. To enhance the cooling performance of the thermoelectric system, this paper designs a new type of finned heat sink, which does not change the overall size of the thermoelectric system. The performance of the refrigeration system under the new fin is tested by experiments under various conditions. During the experiment, the cooling wind speed, the temperature of the hot and cold side of the TEC, the power consumption of the fan, and other parameters were directly recorded through the measuring instrument. The results show that the use of new finned heat sinks can improve the COP of the thermoelectric refrigeration system. Within the scope of the study, the thermal resistance of the new fins can be reduced by 42.6%, and the system COP value can be increased by 22.8%. In addition, increasing the cooling wind speed can f... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bone drilling, bone temperature, rotating heat pipe, thermal management, thermal osteonecrosis
Bone drilling is a common surgical operation, which often causes an increase in bone temperature. A temperature above 47 °C for 60 s is the critical temperature that can be allowed in bone drilling because of thermal bone osteonecrosis. Therefore, thermal management in bone drilling by a rotating heat pipe was proposed in this study. A new rotating heat pipe drill was designed, and its heat transfer mechanism and thermal management performance was investigated at occasions with different input heat flux and rotational speed. Results show that boiling and convection heat transfer occurred in the evaporator and film condensation appears in the condenser. The thermal resistance decreases with the increase of the rotational speed at the range from 1200 to 2000 rpm and it decreases as the input heat flux rises from 5000 to 10,000 W/m2 and increases at 20,000 W/m2. The temperature on the drill tip was found to be 46.9 °C with an input heat flux of 8000 W/m2 and a rotational speed of 2000 rpm... [more]

Keywords: HOMER Pro®, hybrid renewable energy, net present cost, techno-economic optimization
In addition to zero-carbon generation, the plummeting cost of renewable energy sources (RES) is enabling the increased use of distributed-generation sources. Although the RES appear to be a cheaper source of energy, without the appropriate design of the RES with a true understanding of the nature of the load, they can be an unreliable and expensive source of energy. Limited research has been aimed at designing small-scale hybrid energy systems for irrigation pumping systems, and these studies did not quantify the water requirement, or in turn the energy required to supply the irrigation water. This paper provides a comprehensive feasibility analysis of an off-grid hybrid renewable energy system for the design of a water-pumping system for irrigation applications in Sudan. A systematic and holistic framework combined with a techno-economic optimization analysis for the planning and design of hybrid renewable energy systems for small-scale irrigation water-pumping systems is presented. March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fresnel lens, full width at half maximum, Gaussian source, groove number, optical efficiency, solar flux
A novel three-dimensional elliptical-shaped Fresnel lens (ESFL) analytical model is presented to evaluate and maximize the solar energy concentration of Fresnel-lens-based solar concentrators. AutoCAD, Zemax and Ansys software were used for the ESFL design, performance evaluation and temperature calculation, respectively. Contrary to the previous modeling processes, based on the edge-ray principle with an acceptance half-angle of ±0.27° as the key defining parameter, the present model uses, instead, a Gaussian distribution to define the solar source in Zemax. The results were validated through the numerical analysis of published experimental data from a flat Fresnel lens. An in-depth study of the influence of several ESFL factors, such as focal length, arch height and aspect ratio, on its output performance is carried out. Moreover, the evaluation of the ESFL output performance as a function of the number/size of the grooves is also analyzed. Compared to the typical 1−16 grooves per mi... [more]

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converter characteristics, converter design, isolated dc-dc converter, single active bridge
Currently, due to its various applications, the high-performance isolated dc-dc converter is in demand. In applications where unidirectional power transfer is required, the single active bridge (SAB) is the most suitable one due to its simplicity and ease of control. The general schematic of the SAB converter consists of an active bridge and a passive bridge, which are connected through a high-frequency transformer thus isolated. The paper summarizes the behavior of this converter in its three operation modes, namely the continuous, discontinuous, and boundary modes. Later, the features of this converter, such as its input-to-output and external characteristics are discussed. Input-to-output characteristics include the variation of converter output power, voltage, and current with an input control variable i.e., phase-shift angle, whereas the external characteristic is the variation of the output voltage as a function of output current. In this discussion, the behavior of this converte... [more]

Suspended monorails are a common mode of transportation for materials and personnel in underground mines. The goal of the EU-funded project “Innovative High Efficiency Power System for Machines and Devices, Increasing the Level of Work Safety in Underground Mining Excavations (HEETII)” is to introduce a single-wire energy transmission system combined with a capacitive-coupling-based wireless transmission system to power the suspended tractor, along with a monitoring system that will monitor the energy network and additional environmental parameters of the mine. Additionally, the monitoring system acts as the wireless communication backbone, allowing for data transmission to surface headquarters, where the data are processed and logged in a central database. This enables operators to detect and take preemptive measures to prevent potential hazards in the mine, improving the overall efficiency of the energy transmission system. This paper describes the additional considerations required... [more]

Keywords: equations of state, fire-flooding exhaust, MAPE, physical properties, reinjection process
The reinjection of the fire-flooding exhaust is a novel disposal process for handling the exhaust produced by the in-situ combustion technology. For reasonable process design and safe operation, it is of great significance to select an optimum property calculation method for the fire-flooding exhaust. However, due to the compositional particularity and the wide range of operating parameters during reinjection, the state equations in predicting the exhaust properties over the wide range of operating parameters have not been studied clearly yet. Hence, this paper investigates the applicability of several commonly-used equations of state, including the Soave−Redlich−Kwong equation, Peng−Robinson equation, Lee−Kesler−Plocker equation, Benedict−Webb−Rubin−Starling equation, and GERG-2008 equations. Employing Aspen Plus software, the gas densities, compressibility factors, volumetric coefficients, and dew points for five exhaust compositions are calculated. In comparison with the experimenta... Capture conditions for CO2 vary substantially between industrial point sources. Depending on CO2 fraction and pressure level, different capture technologies will be required for cost- and energy-efficient decarbonisation. For decarbonisation of shifted synthesis gas from coal gasification, several studies have identified low-temperature CO2 capture by condensation and phase separation as an energy- and cost-efficient option. In the present work, a process design is proposed for low-temperature CO2 capture from an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant. Steady-state simulations were carried out and the performance of the overall process, as well as major process components, were investigated. For the baseline capture unit layout, delivering high-pressure CO2 at 150 bar, the net specific power requirement was estimated to 273 kJe/kgCO2, and an 85% CO2 capture ratio was obtained. The impact of 12 different process parameters was studied in a sensitivity analysis, the re... [more]

The Spanish Ministry of Defense is currently attempting to reduce the amount of energy that is consumed by its military bases and has therefore raised concerns about how to make their facilities more energy efficient. To fulfill this objective, the Spanish army has developed various studies and projects, as well as a technical prescription sheet that defines the thermal transmittance values of the materials that are to be used to construct the different elements of the containers that make up the temporary housing units at Spanish military camps. Both governments and private entities have developed initiatives that are aimed at improving the energy efficiency of buildings, which are classified into two groups: those aimed at the development of mandatory building codes and those that are based on voluntary certification programs. The use of passive strategies is one of the key actions that is being implemented to achieve the NZEB category, as its first requirement is to be a “very low e... [more]

Keywords: 2D equivalent, BLDC motor, computation time, housing-integrated rotor, magnet overhang, response surface methodology
In this paper, the optimal design of a brushless direct current motor with a three-dimensional (3D) structure using the response surface methodology (RSM) is presented. There were two optimization goals: reduction of the cogging torque and maintenance of the back electromotive force to prevent performance degradation. For motors with a 3D structure, a 3D finite element method analysis is essential, though it requires considerable computation time. Therefore, to reduce the optimal design time, the 3D structure was placed on the 2D plane. Thereafter, a 2D corrected model was applied to the RSM. For the validity of the technique, the analysis results of the initial 3D model, 2D model, and 2D corrected model were compared, and the results of the optimal design 3D model, 2D corrected model, and experiment were compared.

The on-site measurement of transient voltages is of great significance in analyzing the fault cause of power systems and optimizing the insulation coordination of power equipment. Conventional voltage transformers normally have a narrow bandwidth and are unable to accurately measure various transient voltages in power systems. In this paper, a wideband parallel resistive−capacitive voltage divider is developed, which can be used for online monitoring of transient voltages in a 220 kV power grid. The structures of the high-voltage and low-voltage arms were designed. The internal electric field distribution of the high-voltage arm was analyzed. The influence factors and improvement techniques of the upper frequency limit were studied. The parameters of the elements of the divider were determined. The voltage withstand performances and scale factors under lightning impulses and AC and DC voltages, the temperature stabilities of scale factors and the step response and bandwidth of the deve... Keywords: anthropogenic pressure, climate change, hydropower, multitemporal trend analysis
This paper presents changes in the flow of 14 rivers located in the Warta River basin, recorded from 1951 to 2020. The Warta is the third-longest river in Poland. Unfortunately, the Warta River catchment area is one of the most water-scarce regions. It hosts about 150 hydropower plants with a capacity of up to 5 kW. The catchment areas of the 14 smaller rivers selected for the study differ in location, size, land cover structure and geological structure. The paper is the first study of this type with respect to both the number of analyzed catchments, the length of the sampling series and the number of analyzed flow characteristics in this part of Europe. The analysis of changes in the river flows was performed with reference to low minimum, mean and maximum monthly, seasonal and annual flows. Particular attention was paid to 1, 3, 7, 30 and 90-day low flows and durations of the flows between Q50 and Q90%. In addition, the duration of flows between Q50 and Q90% were analysed. Analysis o... The performance of a plate heat exchanger (PHE), in comparison with the conventional shell and tube types, through a trade-off analysis of energy cost and capital cost resulting from different temperature approaches in the cross-exchanger of a solvent-based CO2 capture process, was evaluated. The aim was to examine the cost reduction and CO2 emission reduction potentials of the different heat exchangers. Each specific heat exchanger type was assumed for the cross-exchanger, the lean amine cooler and the cooler to cool the direct contact cooler’s circulation water. The study was conducted for flue gases from a natural-gas combined-cycle power plant and the Brevik cement plant in Norway. The standard and the lean vapour compression CO2 absorption configurations were used for the study. The PHE outperformed the fixed tube sheet shell and tube heat exchanger (FTS-STHX) and the other STHXs economically and in emissions reduction. The optimal minimum temperature approach for the PHE cases ba... [more]

The energy consumption of artificial lighting and its impacts on health have stimulated research into natural lighting systems. However, natural lighting system designs are mainly custom, making them costly and difficult to replicate. This study took an office space as a testing field in order to develop a highly adaptable and adjustable modular natural light illumination system. We divided the system into multiple module designs, demonstrated the use of simple development and fabrication processes and integrated a freeform reflector into the system. In creating a freeform mirror, the optical simulation results of the tested field were regressed (through polynomial regression) to achieve a uniformly illuminated plane, and a high-efficiency light-emitting system was produced. Finally, an active heliostat was used to collect sunlight, combined with actual manufacturing verification and measurement results, in order to create an excellent indoor lighting system. Keywords: bifurcated flows, disc-shaped heat exchangers, fluid transport, heat transfer
The continuous quest for improving the performance of heat exchangers, together with ever more stringent volume and weight constraints, especially in enclosed applications like internal combustion engines and electronic devices, has stimulated the search for compact, high-performance units. One of the shapes that has emerged from a vast body of research is the disc-shaped heat exchanger, in which the fluid to be heated/cooled flows through radial—often bifurcated—channels carved inside a metallic disc. The disc in turn exchanges thermal energy with the hot/cold source (the environment or another body). Several studies have been devoted to the identification of an “optimal shape” of the channels: most of them are based on the extremization of some global property of the device, like its monetary or resource cost, its efficiency, the outlet temperature of one of the fluids, the total irreversibility of the process, etc. The present paper demonstrates that-for all engineering purposes the... Light-emitting diodes based on quantum dots as an active emission can be considered as a promising next generation for application in displays and lighting. We report a theoretical investigation of green emission at 550 nm of microcavity inorganic−organic light-emitting devices based on Zn (Te, Se) alloy quantum dots as an active layer. Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) has been applied as a bottom mirror. The realization of high-quality DBR consisting of both high and low refractive index structures is investigated. The structures applied for high refractive index layers are (ZrO2, SiNx, ZnS), while those applied for low index layers are (Zr, SiO2, CaF2). DBR of ZnS/CaF2 consisting of three pairs with a high refractive index step of (Δn = 0.95) revealed a broad stop bandwidth (178 nm) and achieved a high reflectivity of 0.914.

Keywords: 3D scanning, NACA 64-618, particle image velocimetry, spectrum, turbulent kinetic energy, wake
The effect of manufacturing geometry deviations on the flow past a NACA 64(3)-618 asymmetric airfoil is studied. This airfoil is 3D printed according to the coordinates from a public database. An optical high-precision 3D scanner, GOM Atos, measures the difference from the idealized model. Based on this difference, another model is prepared with a physical output closer to the ideal model. The velocity in the near wake (0−0.4 chord) is measured by using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique. This work compares the wakes past three airfoil realizations, which differ in their similarity to the original design (none of the realizations is identical to the original design). The chord-based Reynolds number ranges from 1.6×104 to 1.6×105. The ensemble average velocity is used for the determination of the wake width and for the rough estimation of the drag coefficient. The lift coefficient is measured directly by using force balance. We discuss the origin of turbulent kinetic energy... [more]

Keywords: capacitor usage, capacitor voltage ripple, hybrid modular multilevel converter
Increasing the modulation index by utilizing the negative voltage states of full-bridge submodules (FBSMs) can greatly reduce capacitor usage of modular multilevel converters (MMCs), thereby optimizing the cost and volume. The hybrid MMC is composed of half-bridge submodules (HBSMs) and FBSMs, and the capacitor voltages of the two types of submodules (SMs) have different shapes as long as negative voltage states exist. This condition greatly complicates the analysis and design of the energy storage requirement of the hybrid MMC, which utilizes the negative voltage states of FBSMs to boost the AC voltage. A numerical calculation method for solving the capacitor voltages and designing the capacitances of FBSMs and HBSMs is proposed in order to accurately determine the minimum energy storage requirement considering the difference between the energy variations in FBSMs and HBSMs. In the numerical calculation, the energy storage and voltage of the arm are decomposed into FBSM and HBSM parts...
