Energy Demand Analysis and Powertrain Design of a High-Speed Delivery Robot Using Synthetic Driving Cycles
Jari Vepsäläinen
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy demand, mobile robotics, powertrain design, robot delivery, sensitivity analysis
Last mile is known as the last leg of the delivery process, which is the most expensive and time-consuming part per kilometer. The most common last mile deliveries are postal packages, groceries and take away meals. Recently, there has been a growing interest and implementation of sidewalk autonomous delivery robots. These robots travel roughly at the speed of pedestrians (6 km/h). A high-speed (15 km/h) delivery robot design is proposed for reducing the time, energy and carbon footprint of deliveries. The preliminary design of the delivery robot powertrain is based on worst-case scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulations with synthetic driving cycles. Synthetic driving cycles were used because there are no open data available of delivery robots. Thus, the procedure presented in this paper is a general approach for cases where there is no precedent application and/or no data are available. The synthetic driving cycles are based on start and end location of food-delivery services in... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flux switching, parameter sensitivity, robust design approach, stator-PM
Parameter sensitivity analysis is usually required to select the key parameters with high sensitivity to the optimal goal before the optimization is carried out, especially for flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines where lot of design parameters should be considered. Unlike the traditional studies on parameter sensitivity, which are generally experience- or statistics-based, and are time-consuming, this paper proposes a parameter sensitivity analysis method of a FSPM machine based on a magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC), which enables the parameters’ sensitivities to be evaluated by their exponential in the nondimensionalized equations, thus providing a fast and accurate way to obtain the parameter sensitivities. Thereafter, the influences of modular manufacturing methods on magnetic performances are discussed, and the robust design approach for the FSPM machine is introduced, which aims to achieve the best machine stability and robustness by setting boundaries on design dimen... Giulia Di Nezio, Marco di Benedetto, Alessandro Lidozzi, Luca Solero
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC–DC converter, multi-phase boost rectifier, offshore wind, SiC power semiconductors
In this paper, the analysis and the design of a high-efficiency power electronic conversion system for offshore wind applications are presented. This system is composed of a 6-phase AC−DC converter based on the SiC power semiconductors, to be used to control the achievable power from the wind turbine electrical generator. Thanks to the phase redundancy, the proposed boost rectifier is suitable for applications where reliability and fault tolerance capability are the main targets. To select the appropriate power semiconductor devices, voltage and current ratings have to be determined. After that, the power loss equations are derived in order to evaluate the conversion efficiency. To design the appropriate DC-bus capacitor configuration, an analytical investigation is carried out by estimating the DC-bus RMS current and the voltage ripple. Finally, the thermal sizing of the system is calculated to identify a suitable heatsink. To validate the proposed analysis, the analytical results are... [more]

Keywords: ammonia, anaerobic digestion, Fuel Cells, Hydrogen, nutrient recovery, sewage digestion, techno-economics, wastewater treatment plants
Anaerobic digestion (AD) and sewage sludge digestion (SD) plants generate significant quantities of ammoniacal nitrogen in their digestate liquor. This article assesses the economic viability and CO2 abatement opportunity from the utilisation of this ammonia under three scenarios and proposes their potential for uptake in the United Kingdom. Each state-of-the-art process route recovers ammonia and uses it alongside AD-produced biomethane for three different end goals: (1) the production of H2 as a bus transport fuel, (2) production of H2 for injection to the gas grid and (3) generation of heat and power via solid oxide fuel cell technology. A rigorous assessment of UK anaerobic and sewage digestion facilities revealed the production of H2 as a bus fleet transport fuel scenario as the most attractive option, with 19 SD and 42 AD existing plants of suitable scale for process implementation. This is compared to 3 SD/1 AD and 13 SD/23 AD existing plants applicable with the aim of grid inje... [more]
Semi-Empirical Approach to Gas Flow Velocity Measurement by Means of the Thermal Time-of-Flight Method—Further Investigation
Jacek Sobczyk
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low flow velocity, thermal anemometer, thermal time-of-flight (TTOF), thermal wave
This paper describes a study to expand the knowledge as to whether a thermal wave anemometer can be used to measure the velocity of flowing gases or gas mixtures in situ. For this purpose, several series of measurements were performed in laboratory conditions using both the previously used probe and other probes of similar design. The probes were not modified mechanically or electrically in any way. The obtained results were compared with each other, and on this basis, the optimal, though purely empirical, form of the calibration function was determined (4). The analysis of the relative differences between the measured and set velocity values showed that they do not exceed 1% in the velocity range from 0.05 to 2.5 m/s. Lowering the sensitivity of the method for velocities below approx. 0.05 m/s results in a rapid increase in the observed deviations, reaching 15% for 0.015 m/s. The conducted research also revealed an increased resistance of the proposed measurement method to small flow... [more]

Satoshi Nakano, Ayu Washizu
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon tax, equilibrium price model, fairness of tax burden, input-output table
Carbon pricing, such as a carbon tax, is an invisible hand that leads to the construction of a sustainable low-carbon society, and precise analysis of the impact of carbon pricing on each sector of the economy is indispensable for its design. In this study, an equilibrium price model based on the 2015 input-output table was used for the analysis of next-generation energy systems (2015 IONGES) and the effect of the introduction of a carbon tax on the price of the industrial sector was assessed. Based on the existing energy-related tax system in Japan, the introduction of a carbon tax is regarded as an increase in the tax for global-warming countermeasures (TGWC) in the petroleum and coal tax (PCT). While existing energy-related taxes are designed to place a relatively heavy burden on the transportation sector, tax reform of the petroleum and coal tax has a relatively large effect on raising prices in energy-conversion and energy-intensive sectors. As a result, the reform of the energy-r... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging torque reduction, combination sequence of uncertainties, motor design, PM uncertainties, robust assembling approach
Conventionally, the small mean and variance of peak-to-peak cogging torque of permanent magnet (PM) machines considering manufacturing uncertainties can be achieved by a robust design or by reducing the uncertainties range. However, the consequent compromise of other design objectives or the increase in the manufacturing costs are frequently inevitable. In this paper, the combination sequence of the uncertainties is highlighted and implemented to achieve a stable performance even for a non-robust design without increasing the cost too much. A PM assembling approach is proposed to mitigate the influences of PM uncertainties on cogging torque by means of combining the uncertainties in a particular sequence, where the effects of uncertainties would counteract each other. Both the singular type of PM uncertainties and the combined ones are considered in the assembling approach. Furthermore, the proposed approach is verified by comparing the cogging torque performance with PM randomly assem... [more]

Keywords: design, location, optimal, reactive power compensation, renewable distributed generator, sizing, voltage collapse, voltage stability
The integration of renewable resources into the existing power distribution system is expanding to reduce gas emissions, treat climate change and satisfy the current global need for clean energy. If the location and size of these renewable generators are determined without considering uncontrollable reactive power compensation caused by their intermittent nature, the resultant power system may suffer from system instability and decreased reliability. Therefore, the issue of optimal location and size of renewable resources attracts great attention. In this paper, a methodology is proposed to optimize the locations and capacities of distributed renewable generators installed in conventional power distribution systems. In particular, uncontrollable reactive power compensation of these renewable resources is considered in this paper and managed through the proposed methodology to ensure power system reliability and stability. As a result, the proposed methodology reminds us of the importan... [more]

Fan Jiang, Jiaqing Chang, Haitao Huang, Junhong Huang
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-saving effect, interfacial fluctuation, oil–water annular flow, pipe type, surfactant
Oil−water annular flow is an efficient method of heavy oil transportation for energy-saving. To deeply study the influencing factors of the energy savings of oil−water annular flow, this paper compares the interface fluctuation and energy-saving situation of oil−water annular flow under different pipe structures (such as straight pipe, sudden-contraction pipe, and elbow pipe), flow parameters, and fluid properties. In the straight pipe, the flow parameters can impact the oil−water annular flow pattern and the energy savings, and the interface fluctuation is consistent with the energy savings. The stable oil−water core annular flow has slight interface fluctuation and significant energy savings. At the same time, the influences of pipe structure and fluid properties on energy saving are also analyzed. In the sudden-contraction pipe, the oil−water interface fluctuates, largely due to the sharp changes in flow cross-section, which leads to reduced energy savings. In the elbow, the oil−wat... [more]

Keywords: copper magnesium alloys, electrical energy transmission, electrical power systems, metallurgical synthesis, preliminary alloy, SEM analysis
Due to the increasing demand for electrical energy in modern society, there is a huge requirement for conducting materials and, due to the development of electromobility, this demand is forecasted to grow each year. This is one of the reasons why copper and copper alloys manufacturing and processing industries tend to evolve and improve. One of the improvement paths is the design of new conducting materials for electrical power systems, electrical energy transmission, and energy storage systems. This paper presents a comparative study on obtaining high-strength copper magnesium alloys in terms of the alloy additive used during the metallurgical synthesis process, because this is a crucial, initial element in obtaining the final conducting product, such as wires. The obtained ingots were tested in terms of their chemical composition, and mechanical and physical properties. The provided results prove that there is a significant increase in the materials’ hardness (and thus the ultimate t... [more]

Keywords: discharging efficiency, inlet structure, obstacle plate, temperature stratification
Temperature stratification between outgoing hot water and incoming cold water is a key factor in diminishing energy loss during the discharging process and maximizing the useful hot water delivered from the tank or enhancing the thermal efficiency of the heating device during the heating process. In this study, the inlet structure and the obstacle plate were designed and modified based on two main factors, the reduction of inlet water velocity and the stipulation of the water recirculation area, to develop temperature stratification through the computational fluid dynamics method. The simulation model’s accuracy was validated against the experimental results. The results showed that using the equalizer as an inlet pipe’s auxiliary device was the best approach for decreasing the inlet water velocity, which resulted in enhancing temperature stratification. The discharging efficiency improved from 77.3% for the original tank model to 86.1% for the tank with equalizer IV model, which meant... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Fluid Dynamics, mass transfer mechanism, numerical simulation, reactor, Taylor vortex
A scheme of a gas−liquid mixed jet is designed by installing gas distributor at the bottom of a stirred tank reactor to generate Taylor vortex. The eddy flow characteristics and mass transfer mechanism in the reactor are analyzed by numerical simulation and experiment. The results show that the evolution law of Taylor vortex in a stirred tank reactor with a rotating Reynolds number is similar to that in a conventional Taylor reactor. The Taylor vortex generated in the stirred tank reactor creates a partial plug flow region in the original complete mixing flow pattern, which reduces back mixing, the plug flow area expands with the increase of rotating Reynolds number. Under the condition of a critical rotating Reynolds number (Recr), the gas phase homogeneity of the reactor is increased by 28% and the dissolved oxygen rate is increased by about 5 times, which effectively improves the flow condition in the reactor and strengthens the mass transfer efficiency between the gas and liquid. The surveyof traffic intensity is used to obtain information on the number of vehicles on roads during the day. Subsequently, it is possible to derive from this the daily, weekly, and other road traffic intensity information. This survey represents the basis for the calculation of the annual average daily traffic volume and the basic characteristics of traffic flow. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused extensive economic and social damage around the world. These damages have also affected traffic. Changes in traffic behavior have mainly affected the reduction in traffic intensity on road networks. Thanks to the reduction in the demand for transport, there has also been a significant reduction in traffic delays, fuel consumption and emissions. An examination of changes in traffic intensity took place at a selected intersection in 2019, 2020 and 2021. This paper describes the effects of reducing the traffic intensity, fuel consumption and emissions obtained by microsimulation. The results ob... [more]

Keywords: DC-DC power converters, design methodology, HVDC transmission, insulation design, power transformer, wind energy
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission represents the most efficient way for transporting produced electrical energy from remotely located offshore wind farms to the shore. Such systems are implemented today using very expensive and large power transformers and converter stations placed on dedicated platforms. The present study aims at elaborating a compact solution for an energy collections system. The solution allows for a minimum of total transformer weight in the wind turbine nacelle reducing or even eliminating the need for a sea-based platform(s). The heart of the project is a Medium Frequency Transformer (MFT) that has a high DC voltage insulation towards ground. The transformer is employed in a DC/DC converter that delivers the energy into a serial array without additional conversion units. The insulation design methodology of an environmentally friendly HV insulation system for an MFT, based on pressboard and biodegradable oil, is introduced. The measurement method an... [more]

Keywords: electricity and hydrogen storage, energy supply system, scenario-based comparative analysis, techno-economic assessment
In response to the objective of fully attaining carbon neutrality by 2060, people from all walks of life are pursuing low-carbon transformation. Due to the high water cut in the middle and late phases of development, the oilfield’s energy consumption will be quite high, and the rise in energy consumption will lead to an increase in carbon emission at the same time. As a result, the traditional energy model is incapable of meeting the energy consumption requirement of high water cut oilfields in their middle and later phases of development. The present wind hydrogen coupling energy system was researched and coupled with the classic dispersed oilfield energy system to produce energy for the oilfields in this study. This study compares four future energy system models to existing ones, computes the energy cost and net present value of an oilfield in Northwest China, and proposes a set of economic evaluation tools for oilfield energy systems. The study’s findings indicate that scenario fou... [more]

Keywords: distorted primary voltage, harmonics, high impedance, opto-isolation, phase displacement, voltage divider, voltage ratio error, voltage transformer
In this paper the design of the two channel opto-isolation circuit for measurements of the differential voltage is presented. It is used to ensure high impedance of the measuring channel(s) in the differential system to ensure the rated operation of connected voltage divider(s). Its conversion accuracy tests are oriented to determine the ratio and phase errors introduced by a tested device under three test conditions. The opto-isolation circuit is tested for the internal noise at various levels of common voltage. In the next step the calibration of the zero output voltage at zero differential voltage is tested. In the last step of the testing procedure, the values of conversion ratio and phase errors are determined. In the first case the analysis is performed during an operation with an additional common voltage divider when both inputs ensure high impedance. In the second case the values of the conversion ratio and phase errors are tested in conditions when only one input ensures high... [more]

Currently, gear pumps are developed with a aim to increase their efficiency, reduce internal leaks, and increase their working pressures. This development direction requires new solutions which would compensate backlash while ensuring an optimal size of the gaps for the entire range of working pressures. One of the solutions intended to meet this demand is to design circumferential compensation with the so-called integrated lips. The presented backlash compensation method is the result of research performed as part of a project named Designing High-Pressure Gear Pumps. Keywords: MPPT testing, PV emulator, PV inverter, shaping I–V slopes, single-diode model of photovoltaic cell
Assessing the performance of photovoltaic systems, particularly dedicated DC/AC inverter devices, requires the use of photovoltaic panels operating under natural environmental conditions, such as variations in solar radiation intensity, temperature and wind speed. Environmental testing is obviously very troublesome, inconvenient and limited. An alternative solution is to use a device that emulates the output photovoltaic panel curves in variable weather conditions, which allows the carrying out of all necessary tests at the laboratory. This paper presents a new photovoltaic emulator (PVE), mimicking the output characteristics of the photovoltaic panels. The proposed PVE is designed and constructed at the renewable energy laboratory for testing low-power PV inverters connected to the LV grid. A novelty of this solution is the method for shaping emulated current−voltage characteristics I−V. The concept of this method assumes autonomous regulation of slopes and shapes of emulated curve fr... [more]

Keywords: cooling performance, dew-point evaporative cooling, heat and mass transfer, nanoporous membrane
In this paper, a plate counter-flow dew-point evaporative cooling system was designed with a nanoporous membrane covered on the surface of the wet channel for enhancement of heat and mass transfer. First, the operating principle of this device and theoretical analysis of nanoporous membrane evaporation were discussed in detail. Then, the impacts of several operating parameters on cooling performance, mainly including inlet air temperature, humidity, velocity, and the effect of utilizing the membrane, were investigated in trials. It was found that the cooling performance can be improved by using membrane significantly. In the dry channel, the maximum temperature decrease can reach 12.5 °C. At a high inlet air temperature, the product air can be dropped to a lower temperature, contributing to a more significant heat transfer process. Lower humidity, on the other hand, resulted in a reduced product air temperature and a lower cooling efficiency. Under the condition of 50% humidity, the we... [more]

The augmentation of biochar (BC) during anaerobic digestion (AD) has been identified as a potential strategy for improving the AD of complex feedstocks. This study evaluates the influence of oak wood biochar 450 °C and fermentation conditions during the AD of the invasive aquatic plant, water hyacinth (WH). Factorial 22 design of experiments (DOE) allowed the evaluation of the effect of the crucial processing conditions, inoculum-to-substrate ratio (ISR) and biochar load. Further optimisation was performed to identify the best processing conditions for the AD of WH, at an ideal ISR of 1. The contour plots suggested that methane yield is favoured at biochar loads of ≤0.5%, whereas the production rate is favoured by increasing biochar loads. However, biochar addition offered no further improvement or significant effect on the digestion of WH. The subsequent AD of WH samples collected from different locations in India and Uganda exhibited variable biochemical methane potential (BMP) yield... [more]
