Effect of Chordwise Struts and Misaligned Flow on the Aerodynamic Performance of a Leading-Edge Inflatable Wing
Axelle Viré, Geert Lebesque, Mikko Folkersma, Roland Schmehl
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, airborne wind energy, leading-edge inflatable wing, RANS, side-slip flow, struts
Leading-edge inflatable (LEI) kites use a pressurized tubular frame to structurally support a single skin membrane canopy. The presence of the tubes on the pressure side of the wing leads to characteristic flow phenomena for this type of kite. In this paper, we present steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations for a LEI wing for airborne wind energy applications. Expanding on previous work where only the leading-edge tube was considered, eight additional strut tubes that support the wing canopy are now included. The shape of the wing is considered to be constant. The influence of the strut tubes on the aerodynamic performance of the wing and the local flow field is assessed, considering flow configurations with and without side-slip. The simulations show that the aerodynamic performance of the wing decreases with increasing side-slip component of the inflow. On the other hand, the chordwise struts have little influence on the integral lift and drag of the wing, ir... [more]
The Rule-Based Model of Negentropy for Increasing the Energy Efficiency of the City’s Digital Transformation Processes into a Smart City
Cezary Orłowski, Piotr Cofta, Aleksander Orlowski
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy maturity capsule, process energy efficiency, project negentropy, Smart City projects
The aim of the article is to build a rule-based model (RMFDN) for increasing the energy efficiency of Smart Cities’ digital transformation processes. The problem that arises during the implementation of digital transformation processes concerns the measures that should be assigned to estimate the duration of the digital transformation. Previous studies of digital transformation have been based on the analysis of design processes based on key performance indicators (KPIs), their place and role in the digital transformation processes, and their monitoring with the use of information architecture. The analysis of the digital transformation processes of cities into Smart Cities shows that they seem inappropriate to the complexity and uncertainty of the digital transformation carried out. The new approach presented in the article is based on three key aspects: rule-based description of the state of digital transformation processes enabling their energy assessment, introducing energy maturit... Design, Build, and Evaluation of an AC Loss Measurement Rig for High-Speed Superconducting Bearings
Mohammad Siamaki, James G. Storey, Lars Wiesehoefer, Rodney A. Badcock
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC loss, high speed superconducting motor, spin-down test, superconducting magnetic bearings
Friction and heat generated in conventional bearings impose a limit on maximum design speed in electrical machines. Superconducting bearings offer the potential for low loss, simplified, and passively stable bearings that can overcome the speed limit and operate at high loads. Although such bearings are contactless and seem to be loss free, AC loss mainly caused by magnetic field inhomogeneity gradually slows down the rotating body. This loss, whose mechanism has not been fully explored, is measured through spin-down tests where the rotational speed of the spinning rotor is measured as a function of time. However, there are some challenges in performing a reliable spin-down test. In this paper, we discuss these challenges as well as the engineering of an experimental test rig that enables us to spin-up, release, and recapture the levitated permanent magnet. We also discuss the specifications of the driving mechanism including the self-aligning coupling, which accommodates permanent mag... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breakdown voltage of air, composite voltage, HV test circuit, HVDC, lightning impulse
The use of HVDC systems is increasing in number due to technological innovations, increasing power capacity and increasing customer demand. The characteristics of insulation systems under composite DC and LI voltage must be examined and clarified. In this study, firstly, experimental circuits were designed to generate and measure composite DC and LI high voltage using a simulation program. The coupling elements used were chosen according to simulation results. Afterward, experimental circuits were established in the laboratory according to the simulation results of the designed experimental circuit. Then, breakdown voltages under composite DC and LI voltage for less uniform and non-uniform electric fields were measured with four different electrode systems for positive and negative DC voltage pre-stresses with different amplitudes. The 50% breakdown voltage was calculated using the least-squares method. Finally, 3D models were created for the electrode systems used in the experiments u... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building envelope, decision making, multi-criteria assessment, responsive, robust designs, uncertainty scenarios, zero-emission buildings
Responsive building envelopes (RBEs) are central to developing sustainability strategies for zero emission/energy buildings (ZEBs). RBEs are a large group of complex technologies and systems, which is why multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methods are helpful to navigate sustainability assessments considering various performance indicators. This article first provides a literature review of assessment criteria and key performance indicators for RBEs and an analysis of existing robustness-based MCDM methods. Then, a methodological approach to assess RBE designs in ZEB projects is proposed as an extension of a novel robustness-based MCDM method that normalizes the objective functions according to defined targets and combines them into one comprehensive indicator (MT-KPI), thereby eliminating the need to weight objectives. The proposed methodological approach is finally tested on a case study of a Norwegian ZEB, where five competitive RBE designs (including building integrated photovol... [more]

Jing-Yuan Lin, Hsuan-Yu Yueh, Yi-Feng Lin, Pin-Hsien Liu
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LLC converter, matrix transformers, three-phase Y–Y LLC
This study presents the topology of a three-phase LLC resonant converter with matrix transformers. The three-phase LLC resonant converter has the advantages of conventional LLC resonant converters, including zero-voltage switching at the primary side, zero-current switching at the secondary side, high-frequency feasibility, and high efficiency. Moreover, it has additional advantages that differ from conventional LLC, including low output capacitor current ripple, natural current sharing in three resonant currents, and a high power level. As a result of the above mentioned characteristics, LLC topology has been used in many electric vehicle charging systems, server power systems, and other high-power applications. However, as the power level becomes higher and higher, the input voltage is usually too high to reduce conduction loss, and the output current also increases. This situation makes transformer design more difficult. The increasing current means more core and copper loss, and th... [more]

Tiantian Du, Michela Turrin, Sabine Jansen, Andy van den Dobbelsteen, Francesco De Luca
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: correlation analysis, design of experiments, energy performance, optimisation, space layout
Architectural space layout has proven to be influential on building energy performance. However, the relationship between different space layouts and their consequent energy demands has not yet been systematically studied. This study thoroughly investigates such a relationship. In order to do so, a computational method was developed, which includes a method to generate space layouts featuring energy-related variables and an assessment method for energy demand. Additionally, a design of experiments was performed, and its results were used to analyse the relationship between space layouts and energy demands. In order to identify their relationship, four types of design indicators of space layout were proposed, both for the overall layout and for each function. Finally, several optimisations were performed to minimise heating, cooling and lighting demands. The optimisation results showed that the maximum reduction between different layouts was up to 54% for lighting demand, 51% for heatin... [more]

Anna Borawska, Mariusz Borawski, Małgorzata Łatuszyńska
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cognitive neuroscience, EEG, electricity saving, media message effectiveness, public communication campaign
Public communication campaigns are among the tools for promoting electricity saving. A crucial task in the process of creating a campaign is to design a simple message to effectively reach the average consumer. It is a beneficial practice to create alternative messages and pretest them to find the most effective. The research methodology during pretesting includes both quantitative and qualitative methods. However, it is believed that the outcomes obtained with the use of conventional techniques are not fully reliable. Therefore, the following question arises: What additional research methods should be applied at the stage of testing the message of a communication campaign so that its effectiveness can be assessed more reliably and/or improved even before its broadcast? In this study, we aim to present the possibility of applying cognitive neuroscience methods in conjunction with a questionnaire to experimentally check the effectiveness of the message using the example of selected elec... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold climate, daylight, framework, human perception, light quality, methodology, mixed methods, phenomenology, qualitative research, residential buildings, visual comfort
In this conceptual article we propose a framework for describing the experience of delightful daylighting in Nordic homes and a method to correlate it with an existing quantitative daylighting assessment. In contrast to earlier research on daylighting, the present work gives priority to developing the methodology for researching the experience of the inhabitant in a real situation and relying the quantitative assessment on an existing method. In this way, we shift the focus of daylight studies from quantitative evaluations towards qualitative descriptions of the human experience of daylight. The framework enables future research that can broaden the way the experience of daylighting is described and to see if the quantitative assessment according to the standard EN 17037:2018 Daylighting in buildings correlates with these descriptions. Firstly, the current state of research on subjective daylight preferences and daylight assessment is reviewed. Secondly, a novel method, the long-term s... [more]

Keywords: IEC, indirect evaporative cooler, M-cycle, Maisotsenko cycle
The indirect evaporative cooler (IEC) has excellent potential to replace or improve conventional vapor compression equipment in HVAC and refrigeration applications. This could be achieved by using the M-cycle (dew-point evaporative cooling technology). This thermodynamic concept makes it possible to derive a large amount of energy from the air stream (as latent heat released during water evaporation into the working air stream) and use it for another air stream (product). Its application has also spread to other sectors, such as water desalination and distillation, power plants, or NOx reduction. This paper provides an overview of the M-cycle mainly in air conditioning (MAC, D-MAC, H-MAC) and refrigeration (MCT, M-condenser). Various integrated solutions are described, showing improved effectiveness in terms of the wet-bulb temperature and the dew point. The design features of consolidated solutions are better In terms of the flow distribution, geometry, or volume. Most of the improvem... [more]
PF2RM: A Power Fault Retrieval and Recommendation Model Based on Knowledge Graph

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault research and judgment, knowledge graph, search recommendation, smart grid
Energy saving and emission reduction have become common concerns in countries around the world. In China, with the implementation of the new strategy of “carbon peak and neutrality” and the rapid development of the new smart grid infrastructure, the amount of data of actual power grid dispatching and fault analysis show exponential growth, which has led to phenomena such as poor supervision effectiveness and difficulty in handling faults in the process of grid operation and maintenance. Existing research on retrieval recommendation methods has had a lower accuracy rate at cold-start due to a small sample of user interactions. In addition, the cumulative learning of user personalization during general retrieval results in a poor perception of potential interest. By constructing a power knowledge graph, this paper presents a power fault retrieval and recommendation model (PF2RM) based on user-polymorphic perception. This model includes two methods: the power fault retrieval method (PFR)... [more]

Keywords: co-electrolysis, methanation, Power-to-Gas, renewables, storage system, Technoeconomic Analysis
A complete thermo-economic analysis on a cutting-edge Power-to-Gas system that comprises innovative technologies (a Solid Oxide Electrolyte Cell co-electrolyzer and an experimental methanator) and coupled with a renewable generator is provided in this study. The conducted economic analysis (which has never been applied to this typology of system) is aimed at the estimation of the synthetic natural gas cost of a product through a cash flow analysis. Various plant configurations—with different operating temperatures and pressure levels of the key components (electrolyzer: 600−850 °C; 1−8 bar)—are compared to identify possible thermal synergies. Parametric investigations are performed, to assess both the effect of the thermodynamic arrangements and of the economic boundary conditions. Results show that the combination of a system at ambient pressure and with a thermal synergy between the co-electrolyzer and the high-temperature methanator presents the best economic performance (up to 8% l... Takuya Nakata, Sinan Chen, Masahide Nakamura
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: context-aware service, heterogeneous distributed service, rule-based system, smart service integration, value-added service
Rule-based systems, which are the typical technology used to realize context-aware services, have been independently implemented in various smart services. The challenges of these systems are the versatility of action, looseness, and the coding that is needed to describe the conditional branches. The purpose of this study was to support the realization of service coordination and smart services using context-aware technology by converting rule-based systems into services. In the proposed method, we designed and implemented the architecture of a new service: Unified Rule-Based Message Delivery Service (Uni-messe), which is an application-neutral rule management and evaluation service for rule-based systems. The core part of the Uni-messe proposal is the combination of a Pub/Sub and a rule-based system, and the proposal of a new event−condition−route (ECR) rule-based system. We applied Uni-messe to an audio information presentation system (ALPS) and indoor location sensing technology to... [more]

Zijia Zhang, Jun Liu, Yansong Li
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-power applications, MIMO system, multiple coils, reliability, resonance
Conventional inductive contactless power transfer (ICPT) systems have only one energy transmission path, which makes it challenging to meet the power transmission requirements of high-power and reliability. This study proposes a novel multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ICPT system. The three-dimensional finite element analysis tool COMSOL is utilised to study various magnetic coupling structures, analyse the influence of cross-coupling between coils on the same side, design the circuit based on this, propose a parameter configuration method for resonance compensation, and, finally, build an experimental platform with small magnetic coupling structures for single-input single-output systems (SISO) and MIMO systems. The results indicate that the co-directional connection of the coils of the E-shaped and UE-shaped magnetic coupling structures has a strengthening effect on the secondary side coupling. The magnetic coupling structure of the E-shaped iron core exhibits the best transmissi... [more]

Keywords: concentrating solar power, falling particle receiver, particles
High-temperature particle receivers are being developed to achieve temperatures in excess of 700 °C for advanced power cycles and solar thermochemical processes. This paper describes designs and features of a falling particle receiver system that has been evaluated and tested at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. These advanced designs are intended to reduce heat losses and increase the thermal efficiency. Novel features include aperture covers, active air flow, particle flow obstructions, and optimized receiver shapes that minimize advective heat losses, increase particle curtain opacity and uniformity, and reduce cavity wall temperatures. Control systems are implemented in recent on-sun tests to maintain a desired particle outlet temperature using an automated closed-loop proportional−integral−derivative controller. These tests demonstrate the ability to achieve and maintain particle outlet temperatures approaching 800 °C with efficiencies betwe... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element, inclined well, low-permeability composite gas reservoir, non-Darcy flow, stress sensitivity, well test analysis
The application of traditional well test interpretation methods cannot comprehensively consider characteristics of stress sensitivity and non-Darcy flow for low-permeability composite gas reservoirs, which makes it difficult to obtain real reservoir parameters. Based on the micro-mechanism analysis of stress sensitivity and non-Darcy flow in low-permeability gas reservoirs, the flow motion equation was improved. Thus, a mathematical model was established which belongs to the inclined well in the composite gas reservoir with a conventional internal zone and low-permeability external zone. Applying the finite element method to solve the flow model through Matlab programming, the equivalent pressure point was selected to research the pressure distribution of the inclined well. On this basis, the bottom hole pressure dynamic curve was drawn, the flow process was divided into seven stages, and the parameter sensitivity analysis was carried out. Finally, the advanced nature of the new model... [more]
Techno-Economic Analysis of Intermediate Pyrolysis with Solar Drying: A Chilean Case Study
Tobias Zimmer, Andreas Rudi, Simon Glöser-Chahoud, Frank Schultmann
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Chile, intermediate pyrolysis, solar drying, techno-economic assessment
Intermediate pyrolysis can be used to obtain high-quality biofuels from low-value residues such as sewage sludge or digestate. A major obstacle is the high water content of sludgy biomass, which requires an energy-intensive and expensive drying step before pyrolysis. Solar greenhouse drying is an efficient and sustainable alternative to a thermally heated belt dryer. In this study, a techno-economic assessment of intermediate pyrolysis with solar drying is carried out. Marketable products of the process are bio-oil, a substitute for diesel or heating oil, and bio-char with various possible applications. Chile is chosen as the setting of the study as its 4000 km long extension from north to south gives the opportunity to evaluate different locations and levels of solar irradiation. It is found that solar drying results in higher capital investment, but lower fuel costs. Depending on the location and solar irradiation, solar drying can reduce costs by 5−34% compared to belt drying. The b... [more]

Keywords: cogging torque, finite element analysis, flux reversal machine, hybrid techniques, modular stator, notching
In this research paper, various performances of five different rotor pole topologies of the proposed novel modular stator (MS) permanent magnet (PM) flux reversal machine were investigated. The proposed design had concentrated, non-overlapping winding, which offered high average torque capability at a wide speed range. The no-load performances such as coil test analysis, three-phase flux linkage, flux distribution, back-EMF, and cogging torque, and load analysis, such as average torque versus current density, instantaneous torque, and average electromagnetic torque, were compared. The PM modular stator machine had high cogging torque, which created vibration and noise in the machine. Different cogging torque reduction techniques, such as notching, arc, flange and hybrid technique arc flange, arc notch, notch flange, and arc notch flange, were applied to reduce the cogging torque, improve average load torque, and reduce the induced voltage, harmonics, and torque ripples. The maximum cog... [more]
Energy Sustainability on an Offshore Island: A Case Study in Taiwan

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: desalination, electricity, Penghu, tourism
This study determines the energy usage pattern for Penghu, which is an island in the Taiwan Strait, for which electricity is the major energy source. There is an increase in electricity consumption as the number of inhabitants and tourists increases. Water supply from desalination plants represents another major electricity demand. To reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, subsidy programs are used to encourage the use of LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances (air conditioners and refrigerators), but not for common appliances, such as chest freezers. Abundant solar radiation in summer and the northeast monsoon in autumn/winter make Penghu an ideal location to take advantage of solar energy and wind power. An undersea cable between Penghu and Taiwan is now available and can be used to stabilize the isolated grid system in Penghu. The target for a low-carbon island can be achieved by installing PV systems and onshore and offshore wind turbines to fulfill the energy demand... [more]

Keywords: CPT, LCLC circuit, multi-resonant circuits
Capacitive technology for wireless power transmission has been shown to be a good option for charging the batteries of electric vehicles. It offers better coupling between the transmitter and the receiver than inductive power transmission. On the other hand, it has some disadvantages; for example, it is very sensitive to the distance between plates. Several ideas have recently been proposed to overcome this disadvantage. However, a proper analysis methodology is still lacking, as is a proper design procedure for the circuits used in capacitive transmission. In this paper, an analysis and design methodology is presented for applying the Z-tank resonant circuit to capacitive power transmission, and the theoretical design methodology is based on normalized equations with respect to the operating resonance frequency. The analysis methodology and design procedure result in a circuit where the resonance frequency remains constant despite changes in the distance between the capacitive plates.... [more]

Keywords: hydrodynamic performance, oblique waves, oscillating water column, wave basin, wave energy conversion, wave energy converter
Most experimental research on land-fixed Oscillating Water Column (OWC) systems assume that the OWC-water wave interaction happens with waves that propagate normally towards the device. However, the angle of incidence of the waves can determine the performance of the OWC, in particular the wave period at which the device resonates. In this study, an experimental investigation to examine the interaction of regular, oblique, water waves with a land-fixed, thick-front wall OWC device in terms of its hydrodynamic performance is reported. A 1:20 Froude scale was used to replicate a single chamber of the Mutriku Wave Energy Plant (MWEP), and a series of tests were carried out in a spectral wave basin. The goal of this study is to look at how incident wave direction and device location affect the hydrodynamic performance of land-fixed OWC systems in regular wave conditions with varying wave heights. The hydraulic performance includes the assessment of the wave amplification factor, hydrodynam... [more]
