March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy management, PV data analytics and diagnostics, PV predictive maintenance, smart PV monitoring solutions, software-as-a-service (SaaS), solar energy
In photovoltaic power plants, fault diagnosis tools are essential for ensuring a high energy yield. These tools should be capable of accurately identifying and quantifying the factors behind the various fault mechanisms commonly found in photovoltaic plants. Considering the aforementioned factors, this article proposes an online smart PV monitoring solution, which is capable of detecting malfunctions that arise from accidental and/or technical causes through the analysis of I-V curves, however, without the necessity to interrupt the operation of the system, thus reducing the maintenance cost. Accidental causes can lead to the reduction of energy productivity due to the excessive accumulation of dirt on the photovoltaic modules, partial shading and eventual errors that occur during its installation. On the other hand, technical causes can be attributed to faults found on the photovoltaic modules, which lead to gradual losses in their electric and material characteristics. Therefore, by... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal compressor, Eckardt’s compressors, empirical loss correlations, performance prediction
This work investigates loss model sets based on empirical loss correlations for subsonic centrifugal compressors. These loss models in combination with off-design performance prediction algorithms make up an essential tool in predicting off-design behaviour of turbomachines. This is important since turbomachines rarely work under design conditions. This study employs an off-design performance prediction algorithm based on an iterative process from Galvas. Modelling of ten different loss mechanisms and physical phenomena is involved in this approach and is thoroughly described in this work. Geometries of two subsonic compressors were reconstructed and used in the evaluation of individual loss correlations in order to obtain a suitable loss model. Results of these variations are compared to experimental data. In addition, 4608 loss model sets were created by taking all possible combinations of individual loss estimations from which three promising candidates were selected for further inv... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ClO2, co-absorption, flue gas cleaning, gas-phase oxidation, NOx, SO2
Co-absorption of NO2 and SO2 from flue gases, in combination with the enhanced oxidation of NO by ClO2(g), is studied for three different flue gas sources: a medium sized waste-to-heat plant; the kraft recovery boiler of a pulp and paper mill; and a cruise ship. Process modeling results are used to present the technical potential for each site together with cost estimation and optimization using a bottom-up approach. A process set-up is proposed for each site together with equipment sizing and resulting flows of process fluids. The simulation results, supported by experimental results, show that removal rates equal to or greater than current best available technologies are achievable with more than 90% of NOx and 99% of SO2 removed from the flue gas. The resulting cost of removing both NOx and SO2 from the flue gases is 2100 €/ton for the waste-to-heat plant, 800 €/ton for the cruise ship and 3900 €/ton for the recovery boiler. The cost estimation show that the consumption and cost of... [more]

Keywords: axial flux generator, coreless, Halbach array, six phases, structure analysis
This paper presents the design of an axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) generator used for hybrid electric propulsion drone applications. The design objectives of the AFPM generator are high power density, which is defined as output power per generator weight, and high efficiency. In order to satisfy the requirements for the target application and consider the practical problems in the manufacturing process, the structure of the AFPM generator comprising a double-rotor single-stator (DR-SS) was studied. In order to determine the rotor topology and stator winding specifications that had the greatest impact on performance in the DR-SS type design process, we selected three rotor models according to the arrangement of the magnetization direction and three stator models according to the coreless winding specifications. These models were first compared and analyzed. Then, a 3-D finite element method was performed to calculate the magnetic, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of the desi... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coastal hotel building, electric boat-to-building, energy matching, nearly zero-energy hotel, ocean renewable energy, zero-emission boat
The topics of zero-emission/energy buildings and electric mobility are increasingly being discussed as solutions to alleviate the environmental burden caused by energy consumption and CO2 emissions in both sectors. This study investigates a zero-energy hotel building supported by a hybrid ocean renewable energy system, which interacts with several zero-emission electric boats. Nine different combinations of floating photovoltaics (FPV) and wave energy converters (WEC) are investigated to compensate for their different fluctuations and the stochasticity of energy generation. Using TRNSYS 18 to perform modeling and simulation, a comprehensive techno-economic-environmental analysis of the hybrid system was conducted. The results indicate that when the total annual generation ratios of WEC and FPV are 76% and 24%, respectively, this combination can achieve the best energy weighted matching index (WMI). The WMI reached its maximum (0.703) when 16 boats were sailing at 15 km/h for a distance... [more]

Keywords: bicycle, cycling culture, cyclist typology, e-bike, Poland
Although it is generally accepted that innovators and early adopters have a particular influence on the uptake of electric bikes, other groups, whose reactions to innovation have not been studied, are perhaps wrongly marginalised. Such individuals, often relying on stereotypes, also need to be included in researchers’ scope of interest. Therefore, the aim of the CAWI survey was to determine the attitudes of respondents, both users and non-users of electric bikes, and on this basis to classify by k-means analysis the attitudes towards the e-bike compared to the traditional bicycle and the car. The results obtained show a large variation between the designated classes. What most of them have in common is a strong attachment to the private car, which is typical for the cycling culture of this part of Europe, but the psycho-physical characteristics of the surveyed remain the strongest differentiating factor. Therefore, in the light of the opinions collected, it seems that the group Gadget... [more]

Keywords: Biomimetic Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (BUUV), Energy Efficiency, fish-like movement, Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI), underwater robotics, undulating propulsion
This article covers research on an innovative propulsion system design for a Biomimetic Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (BUUV) operating at low speeds. The experiment was conducted on a laboratory test water tunnel equipped with specialised sensor equipment to assess the Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) and energy consumption of two different types of propulsion systems. The experimental data contrast the undulating with the drag-based propulsion system. The additional joint in the drag-based propulsion system is intended to increase thrust and decrease energy input. The tests were conducted at a variety of fins oscillation frequencies and fluid velocities. The experiments demonstrate that, in the region of low-speed forward movement, the efficiency of the propulsion system with the additional joint is greater.

March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air compressor, electric motor, energy efficiency measures
The compressed air electric ratio (CAER) describes the ratio of the real electric power demand to the nominal mechanical power of an air compressor. The CAER is an important indicator as the electric power demand of air compressors varies throughout its operation dependent on compressor technology, pressure ratio, and free air delivery. The nameplate power of the compressor drive motor is not sufficient for evaluating the electric power demand; therefore, the CAER plays an important role in assessing the electric operating power demand. In this paper, results from measurements of fixed speed and variable speed (VFD) compressors are presented with the analysis of key influencing factors of the CAER. The data show that the pressure ratio of operating pressure to the maximum design outlet pressure has the largest impact on the CAER. For VFD compressors, the CAER is represented as a linear function dependent on the respective load. Fixed and variable speed compressors’ CAERs are always dep... [more]

In this paper, the authors have developed a hardware model for blocking even and odd harmonics of a power transformer. In the proposed hardware model, intelligent differential & over-current relays are used for the blocking of harmonics of a power transformer. The harmonic restraint function on the differential relay (7UT61) prevents the relay from tripping during transformer magnetizing inrush current. However, the over-current relays which are used for back up protection does not have a harmonic restraint element, and over-current relay trips due to magnetizing inrush current, causes unwanted interruptions and power failures. The establishment of harmonic blocking scheme for over-current protection in power transformers is an important finding of this research study. IEC61850 standard-Based GOOSE (Generic Object Oriented Substation Event) applications used in power transformer protection for fast detecting and clearing of faults is an interested study presented in the proposed work.

Keywords: Carbon Capture, coal fly ash zeolites, dynamic process simulation, plant design, thermal-swing adsorption
At present, mitigating carbon emissions from energy production and industrial processes is more relevant than ever to limit climate change. The widespread implementation of carbon capture technologies requires the development of cost-effective and selective adsorbents with high CO2 capture capacity and low thermal recovery. Coal fly ash has been extensively studied as a raw material for the synthesis of low-cost zeolite-like adsorbents for CO2 capture. Laboratory tests for CO2 adsorption onto coal fly ash zeolites (CFAZ) reveal promising results, but detailed computational studies are required to clarify the applicability of these materials as CO2 adsorbents on a pilot and industrial scale. The present study provides results for the validation of a simulation model for the design of adsorption columns for CO2 capture on CFAZ based on the experimental equilibrium and dynamic adsorption on a laboratory scale. The simulations were performed using ProSim DAC dynamic adsorption software to... [more]

Keywords: additive manufacturing, heat transfer, integrated pin fin design, new type of heat exchanger, pressure drop
The annual waste heat available from industry in the European Union is more than 2700 PJ. Consequently, the utilization of the unexploited thermal energy will decisively contribute to a reduced overall power consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions. In the present investigation, a cycle layout, based on supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2), was applied for a certain waste heat source, a gas compressor station. The boundary conditions determined by the cycle were used by the numerical code ANSYS CFX to design a pre-cooler. Subsequently, this printed circuit heat exchanger was examined for sCO2 mass fluxes between 100 kg/m²s and 900 kg/m²s. The heat transfer and pressure drop increase as the flow channel diameter is reduced. As the pressure drop of the coolant channel is more sensitive to the diameter, a larger coolant channel diameter is selected to maintain a reasonably low pressure drop. The optimum pre-cooler design consists of a 0.5 mm and 0.8 mm channel diameter for the sCO2 a... [more]

Keywords: biogas upgrading, biomethanation, economic analysis, process simulation
Biological biogas upgrading with H2 derived from excess renewable electricity was modeled and simulated in PROII® (AVEVA Group plc, Cambridge, UK). An economic analysis was performed for a biogas plant processing 100,000 tons of biomass (substrate) per year. The biogas and biomethane production simulation results were validated with laboratory experimental data, as well as full-scale data obtained from biogas plants. A biomethane production cost of 0.47 €/Nm3 was calculated, while the minimum biomethane selling price for NPV = 0 was equal to 0.66 €/Nm3, considering a H2 price of 1.0 €/kg. The feasibility analysis indicated that the H2-related costs were the major contributor to the capital and operation costs due to high expenses associated with the in-situ H2 storage facility and the purchasing of H2, respectively. Compared to conventional upgrading methods, biological biogas upgrading has a higher capital and production cost, which can be reduced by increasing the plant capacity. The... [more]

Current wave energy development initiatives assume that available designs have the potential for success through continuous learning and innovation-based cost reduction. However, this may not be the case, and potential winning technologies may have been overlooked. The scenario creation tool presented in this paper provides a structured method for the earliest stages of design in technology development. The core function of the scenario creation tool is to generate and rank scenarios of potential Wave Energy Converter (WEC) attributes and inform the user on the areas of the parameter space that are most likely to yield commercial success. This techno-economic tool uses a structured innovation approach to identify commercially attractive and technically achievable scenarios, with a scoring system based on their power performance and costs. This is done by leveraging performance and cost data from state-of-the-art wave energy converters and identifying theoretical limits to define thresh... [more]

With the rapid development of FSAE, the speed of racing cars has increased year by year. As the main research content of racing cars, aerodynamics has received extensive attention from foreign teams. For racing cars, the aerodynamic force on the aerodynamic device ultimately acts on the tires through the transmission of the body and the suspension. When the wheel is subjected to the vertical load generated by the aerodynamic device, the ultimate adhesion capacity of the wheel is improved. Under changing conditions, racing wheels can withstand greater lateral and tangential forces. Therefore, the effects of aerodynamics have a more significant impact on handling stability. The FSAE racing car of Jilin University was taken as the research object, and this paper combines the wind tunnel test, the numerical simulation and the dynamics simulation of the racing system. The closed-loop design process of the aerodynamics of the FSAE racing car was established, and the joint study of aerodynami... [more]

The effectiveness of using wetted cellulose pads on improving the performance of two conventional passive cooling systems has been evaluated. First, an experimental design was developed to determine the impact of using a wetted cellulose pad on the temperature and velocity of the airflow. A cellulose pad (7090 model) with a cross-sectional area of 0.5 × 0.5 m2 and three different thicknesses of 10, 15, and 30 cm were selected and tested. The results indicated that using wetted cellulose pads with thicknesses ranging from 10−30 cm decreased the outlet airflow temperature from 11.3 to 13.7 °C on average. For free airflow at velocity 3.5 m/s, the outlet airflow velocity from the wetted cellulose pad decreased to 0.9, 0.7 and 0.6 m/s, respectively, for cellulose pads with thicknesses of 10, 15, and 30 cm. By applying experimental results on a psychrometric chart, the humidity ratio of outlet airflow was obtained between 40−70%. The study established airflow velocity as the critical paramet... [more]

Keywords: design evaluation, passive systems, PV-Trombe wall, solar load ratio
The Trombe wall is a passive system used in buildings that indirectly transfers thermal energy to the adjacent environment by radiation and convection, and directly by the thermo-circulation that arises in the air cavity delimited between a transparent and an absorbing surface. Nevertheless, the latter is painted black to increase the energy gains, but this produces a negative visual impact and promotes the overheating risk in summer. To mitigate these aspects, a hybrid Trombe wall equipped with PV panels can be employed. The PV installation results in a more pleasing wall appearance and the overheating risk reduces because part of the absorbed solar radiation is transformed into electricity. To determine the actual performance of a such system, transient simulation tools are required to consider properly the wall thermal storage features, variation of the optical properties, air thermo-circulation, and PV power production. Alternatively, regarding the traditional Trombe wall, the lite... [more]
Influence of Fluid Compressibility and Movements of the Swash Plate Axis of Rotation on the Volumetric Efficiency of Axial Piston Pumps
Paweł Załuski
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial piston pump, fluid bulk modulus, hydraulic pump, volumetric efficiency
This paper describes the design of a swash plate axial piston pump and the theoretical models describing the bulk modulus of aerated and non-aerated fluids. The dead space volume is defined and the influence of this volume and the fluid compressibility on the volumetric efficiency of the pump is considered. A displacement of the swash plate rotation axis is proposed to reduce the dead space volume for small swash plate swing angles. A prototype design of a pump with a displaced axis of rotation of a swash plate with two directions of delivery is presented, in which the capacity is changed by means of a valve follow-up mechanism. Comparative results for a pump with a displaced and a non-displaced swash plate rotation axis are presented, which confirm that displacement of the swash plate rotation axis causes an increase in volumetric efficiency that is apparent for high pressure discharge and small swash plate angles. The determined characteristics were compared with a mathematical model... [more]

Keywords: core loss, dynamic torque, flux reversal, leakage-flux, magnetic flux path, static torque, switched reluctance machine, torque ripple, winding arrangement
The goal of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of two types of winding arrangements for a three-phase 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM), where short- and fully-pitched winding arrangements under unipolar operation are considered. From the analytical results, the short-pitched winding has the best torque per copper weight ratio. The core loss based on counting the number of flux reversals in the stator yoke for each winding arrangement is also proposed and mentioned. To reduce the magnetic flux reversals in the stator core, changing the direction of the magnetic flux path by modifying the winding polarities of the short-pitched winding could reduce 10−13% of core loss compared to the conventional winding. A 1 kW, 12/8 SRM prototype for the ventilation fan application is constructed and tested in order to verify the design consideration of winding configuration. At the rated condition, a maximum efficiency around 82.5% could be achieved.

Keywords: core losses reducing, generator AFPM, rotor speed estimation
The article presents an innovative construction of the Axial Flux Permanent Magnet (AFPM) machine designed for generator performance, which provides the shape of induced voltage that enables estimation of the speed and rotational angle of the machine rotor. Design solutions were proposed, the aim of which is to limit energy losses as a result of the occurrence of eddy currents. The method of direct estimation of the value of the rotational speed and rotational angle of the machine rotor was proposed and investigated on the basis of the measurements of induced voltages and machine phase currents. The advantage of the machine is the utilization of simple and easy-to-use computational procedures. The acquired results were compared with the results obtained for estimation performed by using the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF).
