March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adiabatic flash calculation, binary chloride molten salts, modified quasi-chemical model, P-T phase diagram, thermal stability calculation, upper-temperature limit
A computational study on thermal stability was conducted the first time, combining the modified quasi-chemical model, the Antoine equation, and the adiabatic flash evaporation calculation principle to design a method to calculate the system pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram of binary chloride molten salts. The evaporation temperature of the molten salt obtained by analyzing the P-T phase diagram of the eutectic molten salt clearly defined the upper limit of the optimal operating temperature of the mixed molten salt. The results indicated that the upper-temperature limits of NaCl-KCl, NaCl-CaCl2, KCl-CaCl2, NaCl-MgCl2, and KCl-MgCl2 are determined to be 1141 K, 1151 K, 1176 K, 1086 K, and 1068 K. The maximum working temperature was measured experimentally using a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and the relative error between the calculation and experiment was calculated. The maximum error between the calculated and experimental values of the maximum operating temperature was 6.... [more]

Hui Zhang, Wanan Sheng, Zhimin Zha, George Aggidis
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biological entities, design inspiration, innovative designs, wave energy converters
Biomimetics and creatures could contribute to novel design inspiration for wave energy converters, as we have seen numerous examples in applications of other branches of engineering. However, the issue of how to obtain valuable biological entities, or bionic design cases, that could produce inspiration for novel designs, may be challenging for the designers of wave energy converters (WECs). This study carries out preliminary research on the acquisition of biological entities for designers, to obtain innovative bio-inspired ideas for designing novel WECs. In the proposed method, the first step is to draw out engineering terminologies based on the function, structure, and energy extraction principles of existing WECs. Then, by applying WordNet, candidate biological terminologies can be obtained. Next, using AskNature, along with manual selection and filtering, biological terminologies can be acquired. The last step is to use the biological terminologies to establish the reference biologi... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aircraft design, hydrogen aviation, hydrogen fuel supply, liquid hydrogen, refueling, refuelling, sustainable aviation
Green liquid hydrogen (LH2) could play an essential role as a zero-carbon aircraft fuel to reach long-term sustainable aviation. Excluding challenges such as electrolysis, transportation and use of renewable energy in setting up hydrogen (H2) fuel infrastructure, this paper investigates the interface between refueling systems and aircraft, and the impacts on fuel distribution at the airport. Furthermore, it provides an overview of key technology design decisions for LH2 refueling procedures and their effects on the turnaround times as well as on aircraft design. Based on a comparison to Jet A-1 refueling, new LH2 refueling procedures are described and evaluated. Process steps under consideration are connecting/disconnecting, purging, chill-down, and refueling. The actual refueling flow of LH2 is limited to a simplified Reynolds term of v · d = 2.35 m2/s. A mass flow rate of 20 kg/s is reached with an inner hose diameter of 152.4 mm. The previous and subsequent processes (without refuel... [more]
Improved Model of Thermal Rotor Protection Including Negative Sequence Protection
Davorin Burgund, Srete Nikolovski
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-cooled generator, excitation system, negative sequence protection, rotor temperature, rotor thermal protection, synchronous generator
The paper presents a new model of the thermal rotor protection 49R on synchronous generators with self-excitation with the influence of generator negative sequence protection 46I2. The purpose of the analysis is to solve the problem of simultaneous occurrence of rotor overload due to excitation current and rotor overload due to the inverse component of the stator current. The numerical protections are designed to operate independently of each other, and therefore the residual thermal capacity of the copper windings is not defined with higher precision. A mathematical model that integrates these two protections is given and described.

Ming Huang, Jianhua Li
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC fault blocking capability, hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC), split-capacitor based sub-module (SCSM)
The hybrid modular multilevel converter (MMC) is always featured and profited by the merits of the equipped power valves. Referring to this, a novel hybrid MMC topology equipped with the split-capacitor-based sub-modules (SCSMs) on the AC side is proposed. It aims to increase the utilization of the DC bus voltage with DC fault blocking capability. Especially compared to the hybrid MMC equipped with the full-bridge-based sub-modules (FBSMs) on the AC side, smaller power losses can be achieved for the proposed hybrid MMC, due to the reason that only one semiconductor device of the SCSM is inserted into the current flow route. Structurally, the proposed converter mainly consists of the half-bridge-based sub-module (HBSM) stacks and SCSM stacks. The HBSMs located on the DC converter side of the proposed hybrid MMC are in charge of exchanging active powers, while the SCSMs located on the AC converter side are in charge of shaping the circuit waveforms. Additionally, profited by the specific... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-objective optimization, NSWOA, OPF, Pareto optimal, techno-economic requirements
This paper is concerned with an imperative operational problem, called the optimal power flow (OPF), which has several technical and economic points of view with respect the environmental concerns. This paper proposes a multiple-objective optimizer NSWOA (non-dominated sorting whale optimization algorithm) for resolving single-objective OPFs, as well as multi-objective frameworks. With a variety of technical and economic power system objectives, the OPF can be formulated. These objectives are treated as single- and multi-objective OPF issues that are deployed with the aid of the proposed NSWOA to solve these OPF formulations. The proposed algorithm modifies the Pareto ranking and analyzes the optimum compromise solution based on the optimal Euclidian distances. This proposed strategy ensures high convergence speed and improves search capabilities. To achieve this study, an IEEE 30-bus (sixth-generation unit system) is investigated, with eight scenarios studied that highlight technical... [more]

Edoardo Ruffino, Bruno Piga, Alessandro Casasso, Rajandrea Sethi
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, cooling, Fossil Fuel, greenhouse gas, heat pump, heating, LCOH, life-cycle cost
The levelized cost of heat (LCOH) and the technical feasibility in the specific context of building construction or renovation are the major drivers of users’ choices for space heating and cooling solutions. In this work, the LCOH was assessed for the most diffused heating technologies in Piedmont (NW Italy): that is, fossil fuels (methane, heating oil and liquefied petroleum gas—LPG), wood biomass (wood logs and pellet) and heat pumps (air-source and ground-source), both in heating-only and in a heating and cooling configuration. A sensitivity analysis of the main LCOH drivers was performed to assess whether and how each technology is vulnerable to energy price and upfront cost changes. The results show that heat pumps are competitive against gas boilers, but they are heavily dependent on refurbishment incentives and penalized by the high electricity prices in Italy; on the other hand, wood biomasses are competitive even in the absence of incentives. The analysis confirmed that LPG an... [more]

Uzziah Mutumbi, Gladman Thondhlana, Sheunesu Ruwanza
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: behaviour, co-designed interventions, electricity use, urban sustainability
Human practices are at the centre of unsustainable electricity use at the household level, which means behaviour change strategies can form pathways towards electricity conservation. Although behaviour change interventions are useful in promoting electricity savings at the household level, they are rarely inclusive and informed by the users of electricity. Using a field-based experiment, this study examines the impact of co-designed interventions on household electricity consumption among low-income households in Makhanda, South Africa. The results show that co-designed interventions yielded significantly more electricity savings (5%) than prescriptive interventions (2%) over the intervention period. Participant households exposed to the co-designed interventions showed electricity savings of up to 14% post the intervention period, suggestive of positive persistent effects. Household size and employment status had a significant negative effect on electricity consumption while age, empl... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heavy-duty vehicle, Hydrogen, infrastructure, internal combustion engine, refuelling station, techno-economics
A potentially viable solution to the problem of greenhouse gas emissions by vehicles in the transportation sector is the deployment of hydrogen as alternative fuel. A limitation to the diffusion of the hydrogen-fuelled vehicles option is the intricate refuelling stations that vehicles will require. This study examines the practical use of hydrogen fuel within the internal combustion engine (ICE)-powered long-haul, heavy-duty trucking vehicles. Specifically, it appraises the techno-economic feasibility of constructing a network of long-haul truck refuelling stations using hydrogen fuel, across Canada. Hydrogen fuel is chosen as an option for this study due to its low carbon emissions rate compared to diesel. This study also explores various operational methods, including variable technology integration levels and truck traffic flows, truck and pipeline delivery of hydrogen to stations, and the possibility of producing hydrogen onsite. The proposed models created for this work suggest im... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand charges, grid-connected, holiday homes, peak shaving, residential PV battery systems
Grid-connected PV battery systems for private homes are becoming increasingly popular in many countries, including Sweden. This study aimed to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of such distributed, grid-connected PV battery systems for single homes at a Swedish holiday location. It was especially of interest to investigate the impact of demand charges, as they are frequently introduced by utilities in Sweden and are also common in popular winter sport regions. Grid-connected PV battery systems were sized and optimized based on their net present cost. Load patterns, incentives, demand tariff structures and electricity price variation were used to study the sensitivity of the obtained results. Grid-connected residential PV battery systems were found to be equally profitable compared to grid-connected PV systems without batteries when demand charges were applied. When the load profiles had peak loads throughout the whole year and the batteries were large enough sized to shave many... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: capacitor voltage transformer, fast saturation damper, ferromagnetic resonance, harmonic, mechanism
With the increase in capacitor voltage transformer (CVT) operation life, CVT impedance changes, and the short-time switching of overhead lines, it is very easy to cause a transient oscillation accident in which a CVT participates, reduce the insulation level of a CVT, and even induce regional power grid oscillation and easily cause capacitor breakdown, after long-term operation with defects. In this paper, the whole power network, including the generator, power grid, and consumer, is modeled, and the theoretical model of the CVT ferro-resonance connected grid is built. The frequency spectrum analysis, and the measurements of resonance bus voltage and line voltage, were carried out to find the design method of a fast saturation damper (FSD) and its voltage−current characteristics that affect the vibration, based on theory and practice; this paper puts forward effective measures to reduce the resonance effect of a CVT in operation, and avoid the oscillation of the line and even the regio... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brushless synchronous generator, electric machine design, more electric aircraft
Brushless synchronous generators, which have the structure of three-stage generators to realize brushless excitation, are the most commonly used aero-generators. With the development of more electric aircraft technology, the output frequency of aero-generators is changing from constant to variable, and the characteristics of generators are also changed. To make sure that the generators can be adapted to the variable frequency operation, this paper analyzes the effects of different operating conditions on generator performance and proposes corresponding design methods. The design and verification of the electromagnetic field, fluid field, temperature field and stress field are carried out for the variable frequency generator. A prototype generator is manufactured according to the design results. An experimental platform is set up to test the performances of the designed generator. The final experimental results show that the generator can work well in variable frequency generation syste... [more]

Keywords: Dynamic Modelling, floating offshore wind, hybrid energy solutions, hydrostatic analysis, LCOE, offshore wind energy, point absorber, Technoeconomic Analysis, wave energy converter, wind farm
In the past few years, advanced technologies such as floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) and wave energy converters (WECs) have been developed. As demonstrated by the innovative hybrid platform Poseidon, the feasibility of combining floating wind turbines and wave energy converters has already been explored. Furthermore, diversification of offshore renewable energy technologies reduces power fluctuations and lowers investment costs. This paper focuses on the development of an integrated wind and wave platform and the creation of a numerical model to evaluate the system performance for the Belmullet site. The novel concept consists of the semi-submersible Nautilus platform, integrated with four-point absorbers. A hydro-servo-aero time-domain model, combining WEC-Sim with an in-house wind turbine model, simulated the device motion and estimated the power generated. The performance of the Wave Energy Converters (WECs) was optimised based on their Power Take Off (PTO) damping. Finally,... [more]

Keywords: axial flux machine, hybrid excitation, permanent magnet machines, variable speed machines
Variable speed, permanent magnet synchronous machines with hybrid excitation have attracted much attention due to their flux-control potential. In this paper, a design of permanent magnet axial flux machines with iron poles in the rotor and an additional electrically controlled source of excitation fixed on the stator is presented. This paper shows results pertaining to air-gap flux control, electromagnetic losses, electromagnetic torque, back emf and efficiency maps obtained through field-strengthening and weakening operations and investigated by 3D finite element analysis. Moreover, the temperature distribution of the machine was analyzed according to the fluid−thermal coupling method. The presented machine was prototyped and experimentally tested to validate the effectiveness of numerical models and achieved results.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressor, non-uniform stagger angle, stability, stall inception
It is well known that variations in stagger angle between rotor blades affect compressor performance. In this paper, the stagger angle of blade No. 8 is increased or decreased by six degrees for non-uniformity, and the influence of rotor non-uniformity caused by the change in only one blade stagger angle on the performance and stability of the compressor is investigated. The experimental results show that whether the local rotor stagger angle increases or decreases, the compressor stability will deteriorate. If the stagger angle of blade No. 8 is reduced by six degrees, the flow coefficient at the stall point increases by 8.5%. If the stagger angle of blade No. 8 is increased by six degrees, the flow coefficient at the stall point increases by 1.5%. The reason for the deterioration of compressor stability caused by the local non-uniform rotor stagger angle is explored. When the stagger angle of rotor blade No. 8 deviates from the designed state, the load of blade No. 8 and the surround... [more]

Keywords: 3D-print, axial flux permanent magnet synchronous motor, block-coil, collaborative robot (cobot), output power density, robot joint, slot-less, Somaloy Core, SPMSM, torque density
In this paper, an axial slot-less permanent magnet synchronous motor (ASFPMSM) was designed to increase the power density. The iron core of the stator was replaced with block coils, and the stator back yoke was removed because 3D printing can provide a wide range of structures of the stator. The proposed model also significantly impacts efficiency because it can reduce iron loss. To meet size and performance requirements, coil thickness and number of winding layers in the block, the total amount of magnet, and pole/slot combinations were considered. The validity of the proposed model was proved via finite elements analysis (FEA).

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: partial discharge, power interference, power interference, pulse square voltage, quadratic measurement method, successive interception comparison method
Partial discharge (PD) is an important metric for the insulation diagnosis of power equipment. However, its detection is affected by the strong electromagnetic interference generated by pulse square voltage. We therefore propose a power interference suppression method for partial discharges under pulse square voltage based on a quadratic measurement method. We conduct analysis of the topology circuit when partial discharge occurs in the insulation test sample and introduce the basic principle of the secondary measurement method according to the superposition principle and the linear relationship between the square voltages at different peak values. We verify the feasibility of this method by simulating a PD signal with power interference. Subsequently, we use the successive interception comparison method to solve the non-correspondence of the two initial measurement points problem and design and manufacture the transformer turn-to-turn oil-paper insulation test sample and experimental... Layered Na0.8Co0.8Ti0.2O2 oxide crystallizes in the β-RbScO2 structure type (P2 modification) with Co(III) and Ti(IV) cations sharing the same crystallographic site in the metal-oxygen layers. It was synthesized as a single-phase material and characterized as a cathode in Na- and Na-ion batteries. A reversible capacity of about 110 mA h g−1 was obtained during cycling between 4.2 and 1.8 V vs. Na+/Na with a 0.1 C current density. This potential window corresponds to minor structural changes during (de)sodiation, evaluated from operando XRD analysis. This finding is in contrast to Ti-free NaxCoO2 materials showing a multi-step reaction mechanism, thus identifying Ti as a structure stabilizer, similar to other layered O3- and P2-NaxCo1−yTiyO2 oxides. However, charging the battery with the Na0.8Co0.8Ti0.2O2 cathode above 4.2 V results in the reversible formation of a O2-phase, while discharging below 1.5 V leads to the appearance of a second P2-layered phase with a larger unit cell, which... Keywords: compactness indicator, correlation, geometric efficiency of a building, index of annual energy demand
Many factors affect energy demand, and knowing their impact is very important for being able to design a low-energy building. In this group of factors, there are those that cannot be changed and improved after the building is constructed, so taking them into account when choosing a project is important for energy savings. This group includes geometric parameters. We propose a geometric method of assessing the energy demand of a single-family house. The idea is to predict the level of energy demand by calculating the values of simple geometric parameters in the first stage of design. Based on the analysis of 30 realistically designed single-family houses, we show that the geometric indicators expressed by the base area Af, and perimeter P at a fixed building wall height h, perfectly characterize the amount of energy, both usable and final. Moreover, we show linear relationships between the nominated A/V and non-nominated EWA/FA, RCcd compactness ratios. This relationship allows one indi... [more]

Keywords: complexity management, energy system, energy transition, framework scenarios, power-sector model, socioeconomic scenarios, uncertainty reduction
Energy-system scenarios are widely used to relate the developments of the energy supply and the resulting carbon-emission pathways to political measures. To enable scenario analyses that adequately capture the variability of renewable-energy resources, a specialised type of power-sector model (PSM) has been developed since the beginning of this century, which uses input data with hourly resolution at the national or subnational levels. These models focus on techno-economic-system optimisation, which needs to be complemented with expert socioeconomic knowledge in order to prevent solutions that may be socially inacceptable or that oppose political goals. A way to integrate such knowledge into energy-system analysis is to use information from framework scenarios with a suitable geographical and technological focus. We propose a novel methodology to link framework scenarios to a PSM by applying complexity-management methods that enable a flexible choice of base scenarios that are tailored... [more]

This paper addresses an integrated and developed approach to the design of an Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Wind Generator (AFPMWG). The proposed analytical method of design employs the size equations and precise inductance calculations simultaneously, as well as considering the mechanical constraints of the back-iron disc of the rotor. An Elitist Genetic Algorithm (EGA), such as a high capability optimization method, has been used to solve the equations and design of a wind generator with predefined rating power. The objectives of the coreless AFPMWG design process are minimizing the magnet consumption, maximizing machine efficiency, and achieving maximum sinusoidal induction voltage, considering the wind properties of the geographical area of utilization. The optimal calculation of the permanent magnet thickness is also taken into consideration in this work. The flux density distribution in all parts of the machine has been investigated for the magnetic saturation phenomenon. In this r... [more]

Keywords: finite element method, linear oscillating actuator, modular structure, outer mover, resonance frequency
To overcome energy crises, attention is being paid to saving energy from household appliances. Traditional compressors are in need of being replaced by efficient linear compressors. This paper presents a new tubular moving magnet linear oscillating actuator (TMM-LOA) for compressor application. The proposed topology utilizes outer mover topology with separators between the mover and stator modules. The number of stator and mover modules can be increased or decreased based on the requirement. The addition of a separator avoids the flux cancellation and makes the proposed topology fault-tolerant. The design variables are optimized by using a parametric sweep, and the performance in terms of thrust force is observed. Both the static and transient analyses were performed to analyze the machine performance at various currents and stroke. Both mechanical and electrical resonance phenomena are discussed. The efficiency of the proposed TMM-LOA is calculated for one, two and three modules. Fina... [more]
