April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backfill body, collaborative exploitation, heat storage/heat release, phase-change, stope cooling
In view of high ground stress, high geothermal temperature, and thermal hazard during deep mineral resource exploitation, the concept of phase-change heat storage backfill was put forward in this study. Further, the corresponding technical system was constructed and the main content involved in technical system, which is the optimized proportion of the backfill slurry added with phase-change materials (PCMs), was examined. Moreover, we elaborated upon the collaborative optimization of a backfill body’s mechanical and thermal properties and the mutual cooperation on backfill mining, geothermal energy exploitation, and simultaneous stope cooling. The heat transfer behavior of a backfill body plays a key role in technology system. We numerically simulated the heat transfer among a backfill body, surrounding rock, and airflow in the heat storage process, as well as the heat transfer between backfill body and cold fluid during the heat release process. The temperature distribution of a back... [more]

Adriana AnaMaria Davidescu, Simona-Andreea Apostu, Andreea Paul
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, citizens, EU member states, extra mitigation behavior, multilevel logistic regression, urbanization and climate change
Urbanization and climate change are requiring cities to find novel pathways to a sustainable future, and therefore the urban context may accelerate the conversion to a circular economy. In this sense, climate change is a considerable threat to the environment, affecting both human and natural systems, and in this context individuals have a very important role. Therefore, the paper aims to investigate, on the one hand, what determines people to undertake specific actions in fighting climate change and, on the other hand, what determines some people to engage in adopting multiple actions exhibiting extra mitigation behaviour compared to others, paving the way to an urban circular economy. In order to do that, multilevel logistic regression analysis using hierarchical data (individuals grouped in counties), reflecting group variability and group-level characteristics effects on outcomes at individual level has been applied. Special attention was given to modernisation thesis validation, s... [more]
Origin, Impact and Control of Lignocellulosic Inhibitors in Bioethanol Production—A Review
Nikki Sjulander, Timo Kikas
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bioethanol, detoxification, hydrolysates, lignocellulosic inhibitors, pretreatment, saccharomyces cerevisiae, yeast
Bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass is still struggling with many obstacles. One of them is lignocellulosic inhibitors. The aim of this review is to discuss the most known inhibitors. Additionally, the review addresses different detoxification methods to degrade or to remove inhibitors from lignocellulosic hydrolysates. Inhibitors are formed during the pretreatment of biomass. They derive from the structural polymers-cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The formation of inhibitors depends on the pretreatment conditions. Inhibitors can have a negative influence on both the enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of lignocellulosic hydrolysates. The inhibition mechanisms can be, for example, deactivation of enzymes or impairment of vital cell structures. The toxicity of each inhibitor depends on its chemical and physical properties. To decrease the negative effects of inhibitors, different detoxification methods have been researched. Those methods focus on the chemical modif... [more]

Aditya Sharma, Saket Srivastava, Catalin Teodoriu
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drilling automation, drilling technology, drilling vibrations, Machine Learning, stick-slip
Drilling technology and specially drilling equipment has dramatically changed in the last 10 years through intensive and innovative technologies, both in terms of hardware and software. While engineers are focusing on safer, faster, and more reliable than ever technologies, big data and automation are currently considered the way forward to achieve these goals. Especially when automation concepts are proposed, the prior testing and qualification under a laboratory-controlled environment are mandatory. Drilling simulators have been hugely successful in training industry personnel and academic professionals. A big reason for its success lies in the seamless integration of hardware and software to include an interactive user interface. Physical experimental simulators have the advantage of exposing the user with visual and auditive aids to better understand the real process. This paper provides an insight into the construction and results obtained using a dedicated laboratory setup, which... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Gaussian Process, maritime, mixed-integer linear programming, Model Predictive Control, Optimization, predictive model
We present a novel methodology for the control of power unit commitment in complex ship energy systems. The usage of this method is demonstrated with a case study, where measured data was used from a cruise ship operating in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The ship’s energy system is conceptualized to feature a fuel cell and a battery along standard diesel generating sets for the purpose of reducing local emissions near coasts. The developed method is formulated as a model predictive control (MPC) problem, where a novel 2-stage predictive model is used to predict power demand, and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is used to solve unit commitment according to the prediction. The performance of the methodology is compared to fully optimal control, which was simulated by optimizing unit commitment for entire measured power demand profiles of trips. As a result, it can be stated that the developed methodology achieves close to optimal unit commitment control for the con... [more]
Restructuring and Reliability in the Electricity Industry of OECD Countries: Investigating Causal Relations between Market Reform and Power Supply
Hanee Ryu, Yeonbae Kim, Pilseong Jang, Sergio Aldana
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: market reform, power supply, random-effect model, reliability, restructuring
Power supply security tops the agenda of policies, and it is related to restructuring with the intention of improving efficiency. To investigate relationships between restructuring and reliability in the electricity industry of 15 OECD countries from 1987 to 2013, reliability is measured by the index of the sub-sectors (resources, generation, transmission and distribution, and electricity import), and the effects of the forms of liberalized restructuring—entry, privatization, and vertical divestiture—on sub-sectors are evaluated with the random-effect model. Results indicate that restructuring has a partially negative relationship with reliability, but the effect differs by the type of liberalization and supply sub-sectors.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling energy, daylight, residential building, shading device
Accounting for more than half of buildings in South Korea, the energy consumed by residential buildings has become a main concern and the cooing demand has rapidly increased. To reduce energy consumption, several passive and active design strategies have generally been applied. However, there has been an increasing demand for high window-to-wall ratios in residential buildings, it is imperative to block sunlight into a building effectively. Focusing on the reduction of cooling energy consumption in a residential building, the present study assessed the daylight and energy performance of shading devices. Among various types of shading devices, the Venetian blind, horizontal louver, light shelf, and egg-crate were selected. The illuminance levels in three different areas in a building were measured. In addition, the annual cooling energy consumption by these shading devices was investigated. As a result, both daylight and energy performance varied with different design options of these s... Conor McKinnon, Alan Turnbull, Sofia Koukoura, James Carroll, Alasdair McDonald
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, neural networks, normal behaviour modelling, SCADA
Operations and Maintenance (O&M) can make up a significant proportion of lifetime costs associated with any wind farm, with up to 30% reported for some offshore developments. It is increasingly important for wind farm owners and operators to optimise their assets in order to reduce the levelised cost of energy (LCoE). Reducing downtime through condition-based maintenance is a promising strategy of realising these goals. This is made possible through increased monitoring and gathering of operational data. SCADA data are useful in terms of wind turbine condition monitoring. This paper aims to perform a comprehensive comparison between two types of normal behaviour modelling: full signal reconstruction (FSRC) and autoregressive models with exogenous inputs (ARX). At the same time, the effects of the training time period on model performance are explored by considering models trained with both 12 and 6 months of data. Finally, the effects of time resolution are analysed for each algorithm... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, laser modification, photovoltaic cell modification, photovoltaic cells, silicon cells
The main aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of laser shaping of the photovoltaic cell based on its efficiency. The authors described both process of the monocrystalline photovoltaic cell manufacturing, its efficiency, and the possibilities of usage in architecture and the process of creating the photovoltaic cells of unconventional shapes by using laser technology. A method for cutting photovoltaic cells using a fiber laser was presented as well as the parameters of the laser cutting process. The described method allows cutting the massively produced silicon cells according to the predetermined trajectory. Using the proposed process parameters, satisfactory cutting edge quality, and negligible impact of the laser beam on changes in the structure of the photovoltaic cell active layers were achieved. In each cycle of structure cutting, only a small part of the material is removed (from 1 to 2 μm), and depending on the thickness, the process is repeated from 50 to 300 times. It... [more]

Optimal Electric Vehicle Charging Considering the Effects of a Financial Incentive on Battery Ageing
Thomas Steffen, Ashley Fly, William Mitchell
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, charging, degradation, electric, lithium-ion, Matlab, optimal, Simulink, V2G, vehicle
As the market share of electric vehicles increases, the intermittent load on the electricity grid due to charging will increase. This can be counteracted by Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) which utilises dormant electric vehicles to feed power into the grid, generating income for the vehicle owner while relieving load across the grid. However, increased battery use through V2G can negatively affect battery health. In this work, a computational model of an electric vehicle with battery degradation is used to investigate the relationship of these effects. The analysis was conducted at the top level of detail, only considering the battery pack of the vehicle. The findings of this investigation show that the cost relating to battery degradation is smaller than the potential profit available from Vehicle-to-Grid over a three-year period. However, the benefit does not seem to be enough to justify the upfront investment requirement, and further financial incentives, such as net billing, may be required... [more]

Keywords: high-temperature heat pump, organic Rankine cycle, thermal energy storage, transient modelling
One of the main challenges for a further integration of renewable energy sources in the electricity grid is the development of large-scale energy storage systems to overcome their intermittency. This paper presents the concept named CHEST (Compressed Heat Energy STorage), in which the excess electricity is employed to increase the temperature of a heat source by means of a high-temperature heat pump. This heat is stored in a combination of latent and sensible heat storage systems. Later, the stored heat is used to drive an organic Rankine cycle, and hereby to produce electricity when needed. A novel application of this storage system is presented by exploring its potential integration in the Spanish technical constraints electricity market. A detailed dynamic model of the proposed CHEST system was developed and applied to a case study of a 26-MW wind power plant in Spain. Different capacities of the storage system were assessed for the case under study. The results show that roundtrip... [more]

Sebastián Uribe, Binbin Qi, Omar Farid, Muthanna Al-Dahhan
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD modeling, elasticity modulus, Euler-two-phase model, spouted bed, validation experiments
With a Euler−Euler (E2P) approach, a mathematical model for predicting the pointwise hydrodynamic behavior of a spouted bed was implemented though computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The model considered a bed elasticity approach in order to reduce the number of required sub-models to provide closure for the solids stress strain-tensor. However, no modulus of elasticity sub-model for a bed elasticity approach has been developed for spouted beds, and thus, large deviations in the predictions are obtained with common sub-models reported in literature. To overcome such a limitation, a new modulus of elasticity based on a sensitivity analysis was developed and implemented on the E2P model. The model predictions were locally validated against experimental measurements obtained in previous studies. The experimental studies were conducted using our in-house developed advanced γ-ray computed tomography (CT) technique, which allows to obtain the cross-sectional time-averaged solids h... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumers, electricity smart meters, energy monitoring, knowledge, longitudinal study, smart metering information platforms
The objective of this research was to explore correlates and predictors that play a role in the process of adopting and withdrawing from using a smart metering information platform (SMP). The SMP supports energy monitoring behaviors of the electricity consumers. The literature review shows, however, that not every customer is ready to the same extent to adopt novel solutions. Adoption requires going through stages of readiness to monitor energy consumption in a household. In a longitudinal field experiment on Polish residential consumers, we aimed to see whether messages congruent with the stage of readiness in which participants declared to be at a given moment will be more effective in prompting participants to progress to the next stage than a general message or a passive control condition. We also tested the effect of attitude and knowledge about energy monitoring on phase changes. Our study reveals that what affects the phase change is the participation in the study. The longer th... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: electric power generation, flow rate, microbial fuel cells, Modelling, Wastewater
The energy contained in wastewaters has been identified as a promising sustainable energy resource that could be harvested by using microbial fuel cells (MFC). When dealing with real wastewaters, the MFCs should be able to manage high flow rates and flow rates fluctuations. In this work, the short-term effects of the influent flow rate variations on the performance of a microbial fuel cell has been studied. With this aim, the influent flow rate was stepwise increased from 0.72 to 7.2 L/d and then stepwise decreased. The obtained results indicate that, on the one hand, an increase in the influent flow rate leads to higher chemical oxygen demand removal rates up to 396 g/(L/d) and higher electric power generation almost 18 mW/m2, but to lower coulombic efficiencies. On the other hand, the reduction of the flow rate increases the coulombic efficiencies, as well as the percentage of chemical oxygen demand removed, but decreases electric power generation. In the short-term, the exposition t... [more]

Ying Li, Fengzhong Sun, Qiannan Zhang, Xuehong Chen, Wei Yuan
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined heat and power (chp), heat storage tank, numerical simulation, thermal storage technology, thermoelectric decoupling
The central heating technology with thermal storage technology is an important means to realize thermoelectric decoupling, meet heating demand, reduce primary energy consumption, and protect the ecological environment. For this paper, the numerical simulation method was used to study the temperature variation of large-capacity hot water storage tank (HWST) in an actual combined heat and power system. The influence of various factors, including the length diameter ratio, water supply temperature, and water supply flow, as well as the orifice diameter and number of the water distributor, on the flow uniformity and performance of the HWST was investigated. The results show that the heat storage efficiency and flow uniformity of the HWST can be improved by properly increasing the water supply flow, the orifice diameter, and number of the water distributor. Increasing the length diameter ratio can improve the flow uniformity, but it will reduce the heat storage efficiency of the HWST. Incre... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrode solution, electrodiaalysis, LiBr, liquid desiccant, regeneration
Electrodialysis is regarded as a novel liquid regeneration method, and the regenerated solution can satisfy the dehumidification requirements even in a hot and humid environment. LiBr solution is an important choice for a liquid desiccant air conditioning system due to its great dehumidifying ability, so it is necessary to conduct experimental exploration of the regeneration characteristics of ED regeneration for LiBr solution. In this paper, the effects of solution concentration, circulation flow rate, current and electrode solution on the performance of the electrodialysis regeneration system were studied by constructing an experimental electrodialysis regeneration system. The results show that growing the starting concentration of the LiBr solution adversely affects the regeneration characteristics of the electrodialyzer and of the air conditioning system dehumidified by the solution. Under test conditions, as the initial concentration of LiBr solution increased from 45% to 55%, the... [more]
Non-Directional Earth Fault Passage Indication in Isolated Neutral Distribution Networks
Amir Farughian, Lauri Kumpulainen, Kimmo Kauhaniemi
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault location, fault passage indication, symmetrical sequence currents
In this paper, two new methods for locating single-phase to ground faults in isolated neutral distribution networks are proposed. The methods are based on the analysis of symmetrical sequence currents. They are solely based on currents, not requiring voltage measurement. The first method employs only the zero sequence current and the second one utilizes the negative sequence current in combination with the zero sequence current. It is revealed why using only zero sequence current with a simple threshold is insufficient and may lead to false results. Using the proposed methods, earth faults with high resistances can be located in isolated neutral distribution networks with overhead lines or cables.

Flavio R. Arroyo M., Luis J. Miguel
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate change, energy governance, energy policy, environmental sustainability, low-carbon energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
This article describes the results of a study of Ecuador’s energy status, using the system dynamics methodology to model supply, demand and CO2 emissions scenarios for the year 2030. Primary energy production increased in the different projected scenarios, with oil as the most important source of energy. The increase observed in final energy consumption was mainly associated with the transport and industry sectors. A reduction in energy intensity was projected for the different scenarios, which could be associated with the projected economic growth. The results obtained were used to build a proposal for energy policies aimed at mitigating emissions. The proposed changes to the national energy matrix could be the factors that will contribute most to the achievement of carbon emission reductions projected by the different scenarios; changes in the energy matrix are mainly associated with the development of projects to replace fossil fuels with renewable energies, mainly hydropower.
A Model to Improve Granular Temperature in CFD-DEM Simulations

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD-DEM, drag force, fluidized beds, granular temperature
CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamic-discrete element method) is a promising approach for simulating fluid−solid flows in fluidized beds. This approach generally under-predicts the granular temperature due to the use of drag models for the average drag force. This work develops a simple model to improve the granular temperature through increasing the drag force fluctuations on the particles. The increased drag force fluctuations are designed to match those obtained from PR-DNSs (particle-resolved direct numerical simulations). The impacts of the present model on the granular temperatures are demonstrated by posteriori tests. The posteriori tests of tri-periodic gas−solid flows show that simulations with the present model can obtain transient as well as steady-state granular temperature correctly. Moreover, the posteriori tests of fluidized beds indicated that the present model could significantly improve the granular temperature for the homogenous or slightly inhomogeneous systems, whi... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, induced seismicity, microseismic events, seismic location, waveform stacking
Seismic source location specifies the spatial and temporal coordinates of seismic sources and lays the foundation for advanced seismic monitoring at all scales. In this work, we firstly introduce the principles of diffraction stacking (DS) and cross-correlation stacking (CCS) for seismic location. The DS method utilizes the travel time from the source to receivers, while the CCS method considers the differential travel time from pairwise receivers to the source. Then, applications with three field datasets ranging from small-scale microseismicity to regional-scale induced seismicity are presented to investigate the feasibility, imaging resolution, and location reliability of the two stacking operators. Both of the two methods can focus the source energy by stacking the waveforms of the selected events. Multiscale examples demonstrate that the imaging resolution is not only determined by the inherent property of the stacking operator but also highly dependent on the acquisition geometry... [more]
