April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: drilling mud, dynamic shear stress, equivalent circulation density, plastic viscosity, polymer reagents, rheology
Improving the efficiency of well drilling process in a reservoir is directly related to subsequent well flow rates. Drilling of deviated and horizontal wells is often accompanied by an increase in pressure losses due to flow resistance caused by small size of the annular space. An important role in such conditions is played by the quality of borehole cleaning and transport capacity of drilling fluid, which is directly related to the rheological parameters of the drilling fluid. The main viscosifiers in modern drilling fluids are polymer reagents. They can be of various origin and structure, which determines their features. This work presents investigations that assess the effect of various polymers on the rheological parameters of drilling fluids. Obtained data are evaluated taking into account the main rheological models of fluid flow. However, process of fluid motion during drilling cannot be described by only one flow model. Paper shows experimentally obtained data of such indicator... [more]
Renewable Energy Curtailment: Prediction Using a Logic-Based Forecasting Method and Mitigation Measures in Kyushu, Japan
Alex Bunodiere, Han Soo Lee
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtailment, grid interconnection, Kyushu, mitigation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar
High variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration led to the first-ever VRE curtailment in Japan, occurring in Kyushu in October 2018. Since then, there has been an average of 3% solar curtailment, with a peak of 13.7% in April 2019, resulting in approximately ¥9.6 billion of wasted energy. The VRE curtailment is expected to worsen as VRE penetration continues to increase along with nuclear energy increment in line with Japan’s 2030 energy goals. To prevent this curtailment and increase energy stability, a novel, logic-based forecasting method using hourly supply/demand data was developed. Initially, inaccurate results were returned; however, after several rounds of calibration that adjusted the quartile value of the max/min operating windows, the overall accuracy of this method was increased to 97% of real curtailment. This calibrated model was then used to test several curtailment mitigation scenarios. Some scenarios increased curtailment, while the two most successful scenarios, whic... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas sequestration, geological structure, leakage risk, reservoir modelling, sequestration capacity, trapping mechanisms
A twenty-four-year on-going project of acid gas sequestration in a deep geological structure was subject to detailed modelling based upon a large set of geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data. The model was calibrated against available operational and monitoring data and used to determine basic characteristics of the sequestration process, such as fluid saturations and compositions, their variation in time due to fluid migrations, and the gas transition between free and aqueous phases. The simulation results were analysed with respect to various gas leakage risks. The contribution of various trapping mechanisms to the total sequestrated amount of injected gas was estimated. The observation evidence of no acid gas leakage from the structure was confirmed and explained by the simulation results of the sequestration process. The constructed and calibrated model of the structure was also used to predict the capacity of the analysed structure for increased sequestration by finding... [more]

Diogo Menezes, Mateus Mendes, Jorge Alexandre Almeida, Torres Farinha
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: wind farm, wind resources, wind turbine maintenance
The use of clean and renewable energy sources is increasingly important, for economic and environmental reasons. Wind plays a key role among renewable energy sources. Hence, the location, monitoring and maintenance of wind turbines are areas that have received more and more attention in recent years. The paper presents a survey of datasets of wind resources, wind farm installed capacity and wind farm operation, which contain generous amounts of data. Those datasets are important tools, freely available for analysis of wind resources and study of the performance of wind turbines. A short analysis of one of the datasets is also presented, identifying different operational regions, and the ones more likely to aggregate failures. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is used to study wind turbines’ behavior.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air, built-in volume ratio, chamber model, Computational Fluid Dynamics, expander, optimisation, performance, twin screw, validation
Positive displacement machines have been identified as appropriate expanders for small-scale power generation systems such as Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs). Screw expanders can operate with good efficiency in working fluids under both dry and two-phase conditions. Detailed understanding of the fluid expansion process is required to optimise the machine design and operation for specific applications, and accurate design tools are therefore essential. Using experimental data for air expansion, both CFD and chamber models have been applied to investigate the influence of port flow and leakage on the expansion process. Both models are shown to predict pressure variation and power output with good accuracy. The validated chamber model is then used to identify the optimal volume ratio and rotational speed for experimental conditions.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: borehole, energy piles, GSHP, PCM, thermal storage
Phase change materials (PCM) utilization in energy storage systems represents a point of interest and attraction for the researchers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. PCM have been used widely on the interior or exterior walls of the building application to optimize the energy consumption during heating and cooling periods. Meanwhile, ground source heat pump (GSHP) gained its popularity because of the high coefficient of performance (COP) and low running cost of the system. However, GSHP system requires a stand-by heat pump during peak loads. This study will present a new concept of energy piles that used PCM in the form of enclosed tube containers. A lab-scaled foundation pile was developed to examine the performance of the present energy pile, where three layers of insulation replaced the underground soil to focus on the effect of PCM. The investigation was conducted experimentally and numerically on two identical piles with and without PCM. Moreover, a flow rate parametric study w... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EMS, ESS, forecasting, HCPV, linear models, smoothing
The High Concentrator Photovoltaic (HCPV) technology, due to its high efficiency, is considered one of the most promising solutions for the exploitation of sun-irradiation-based Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Nevertheless, the HCPV production is strictly connected to the Direct Normal Irradiation (DNI) making this photovoltaic technology more sensible to cloudiness than traditional ones. In order to mitigate the power intermittence and improve production programmability, the integration between Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) and HCPV, resorting to forecasting algorithms, has been investigated. Specifically, a local weather forecasting algorithm has been used for estimating the daily time evolution of DNI, air Temperature (T), Wind Speed (WS), and Air Mass (AM). These data are subsequently processed by means of an accurate HCPV model for the estimation of one day-ahead daily power production profile. The processing of HCPV forecasted generation by means of a properly tuned filter-based... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: long short-term memory, LSTM, missing pressure data, recurrent neural network, restoration, RNN
This study proposes a data-driven method based on recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with long short-term memory (LSTM) cells for restoring missing pressure data from a gas production well. Pressure data recorded by gauges installed at the bottom hole and wellhead of a production well often contain abnormal or missing values as a result of gauge malfunctions, noise, outliers, and operational instability. RNNs employing LSTM cells to prevent long-term memory loss have been widely used to predict time series data. In this study, an RNN with the LSTM method was used to restore abnormal or missing wellhead and bottom-hole pressures in three intervals within a production sequence of more than eight years in duration. The pressure restoration was performed using various input features for RNNs with LSTM models based on the characteristics of the available data. It was carried out through three sequential processes and the results were acceptable with a mean absolute percentage error no more th... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: autarky, context scenarios, cross-impact-balance, decentralization, interdisciplinary, power system optimization, social science
This paper analyses the effects of regional renewable electricity self-sufficiency targets on the power system in Germany. For this purpose, an interdisciplinary approach from social sciences and energy system modelling was chosen, which allows considering qualitative factors such as public acceptance or political stability. Following the concept of context scenarios, consistent raw scenarios are generated by a cross-impact balance analysis (CIB), and the scenarios are quantified by the unit commitment and expansion cost minimisation model ENTIGRIS considering power plants, storages, and the electricity grid. This approach enables an understanding of the system framework conditions and their relationships and allows the combination of qualitative and quantitative scenario descriptors. The most important factors for setting regional self-sufficiency targets were identified through interviews. The main system effects identified are: The regional distribution of generation capacities is s... [more]

Keywords: E(t), fluidization, in-series reactors, residence time distribution, scale-up, square-based spouted beds, tracer experiments
The present work aims at investigating the residence time distribution (RTD) of a multiple spouted bed reactor, which will be applied for the pyrolysis and gasification of residual biomass. The unit is composed of square-based spouted beds, placed in series and at descending heights, and communicating with each other through an opening in the lateral wall. The gas is fed evenly in parallel. The experimental analysis is based on tracer experiments in cold-flow units, assessing the influence of the number of units and the bed height. The tests proved the good mixing properties of the spouted beds, which create a stable fluidization regime and do not feature dead zones. Each spouted bed can generally be well assimilated to an ideal continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The RTD of the device seems adequate for the application, and also seems to be well tuneable through the selection of the bed height and number of units. Given the good similarity with ideal reactor networks, these repres... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cost optimal calculations, energy consumption in buildings, Energy Efficiency
Kazakhstan is country rich in energy resources, but to raise the living standards of the country’s population, the government regulates prices of heating energy, which are significantly lower comparing to those in the global energy market. Such an approach encourages the construction of residential buildings without concern for their energy efficiency, which significantly increases energy consumption in the sector and leads to the increase of greenhouse gas emissions into the environment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the impact of regulated low prices of heating energy on long-term energy use in buildings, to determine optimal levels of building thermal insulation at current energy prices and following global energy price trends, and to demonstrate the impact of more efficient building thermal insulation on heating energy consumption from a long-time perspective. The cost-optimal method used in EU countries was chosen for the optimization of building thermal insulati... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: alkaline condition, external carbon sources (ECS), hydrolysis, microbial community, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)
Maximizing the internal carbon sources in raw wastewater was found to be an alternative option to alleviate the financial burden in external carbon sources (ECS) addition to the biological nutrient removal (BNR) process. Based on previous studies on particulate recovery via fine-sieving technologies, alkali pretreatment was used to improve the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from the fine-sieving fractions (FSF). Hydrolysis performance and methane production were monitored to evaluate the reasons for the SCFA boost. Besides, the microbial community structure was evaluated by high-throughput sequencing. Furthermore, mass balance and financial benefits were preliminarily estimated. The results showed that alkali pretreatment effectively promoted the generation of SCFAs with 234 mg/g volatile suspended solids (VSS), almost double that of the control test. This was partially attributed to the efficient hydrolysis, with soluble polysaccharides and protein increased by 2.1 and 1.2 t... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold end temperature, heat source, nonlinear, thermoelectric generation–cooling, transient analysis
This paper focuses on the problem of thermoelectric cooler waste heat recovery and utilization, and proposes taking the waste heat together with the original heat source as the input heat source of the integrated thermoelectric generation−cooling system. By establishing an analytic model of this integrated thermoelectric generation−cooling system, the steady-state and transient thermal effects of this system are analyzed. The steady-state analysis results show that the thermoelectric generator’s actual heat source is about 20% larger than the intrinsic heat source. The transient analysis results prove that the current of thermoelectric power generation and the cold end temperature of the system show a nonlinear change rate with time. The cold end temperature of the system has a maximum value. Under different intrinsic heat sources, this maximum value can be reached between 1 s and 2.5 s.

Keywords: complex terrain, mesoscale-microscale coupling, tower measurements, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS)
Micrometeorological observations from a tower, an eddy-covariance (EC) station and an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) at the WINSENT test-site are used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, driven by a mesoscale model. The observation site is characterised by a forested escarpment in a complex terrain. A two-day measurement campaign with a flow almost perpendicular to the escarpment is analysed. The first day is dominated by high wind speeds, while, on the second one, calm wind conditions are present. Despite some minor differences, the flow structure, analysed in terms of horizontal wind speeds, wind direction and inclination angles shows similarities for both days. A real-time strategy is used for the CFD validation with the UAS measurement, where the model follows spatially and temporally the aircraft. This strategy has proved to be successful. Stability indices such as the potential temperature and the bulk Richardson number are calculated to diagnose atmospheric b... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, fuel cell, high temperature PEM
Ammonia is a hydrogen-rich compound that can play an important role in the storage of green hydrogen and the deployment of fuel cell technologies. Nowadays used as a fertilizer, NH3 has the right peculiarities to be a successful sustainable fuel for the future of the energy sector. This study presents, for the first time in literature, an integration study of ammonia as a hydrogen carrier and a high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) as an energy conversion device. A system design is presented, that integrates a reactor for the decomposition of ammonia with an HT-PEMFC, where hydrogen produced from NH3 is electrochemically converted into electricity and heat. The overall system based on the two technologies is designed integrating all balance of plant components. A zero-dimensional model was implemented to evaluate system efficiency and study the effects of parametric variations. Thermal equilibrium of the decomposition reactor was studied, and two different... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: phase change materials, T-history, T-melting CHF, thermal energy storage, thermophysical characterization
The growing interest in developing applications for the storage of thermal energy (TES) is highly linked to the knowledge of the properties of the materials that will be used for that purpose. Likewise, the validity of representing processes through numerical simulations will depend on the accuracy of the thermal properties of the materials. The most relevant properties in the characterization of phase change materials (PCM) are the phase change enthalpy, thermal conductivity, heat capacity and density. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is the most widely used technique for determining thermophysical properties. However, several unconventional methods have been proposed in the literature, mainly due to overcome the limitations of DSC, namely, the small sample required which is unsuitable for studying inhomogeneous materials. This paper presents the characterization of two commercial paraffins commonly used in TES applications, using methods such as T-history and T-melting, which... [more]

Keywords: Boehm titration, cationic dye, grape skin, hydrochar, orange peel, thermodynamic properties
With the increasing needs of clean water supplies, the use of biomass wastes and residues for environmental remediation is essential for environmental sustainability. In this study, the residues from winery and citrus juice industries, namely grape skin and orange peel, respectively, were first converted to hydrochars by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and then a cationic dye (methylene blue) adsorption was studied on hydrochars. Hydrochars from both feedstocks were produced at three different temperatures (180, 220, and 250 °C) and a fixed residence time (1 h) to evaluate the hydrochar’s performance on the dye adsorption. The hydrochars were characterized in terms of their pH, pH at point of zero charge (pHPZC), surface functionalities, and surface area. A batch adsorption study of the dye was carried out with variable adsorbate concentration, pH, and temperature. Two adsorption isotherms namely Langmuir and Freundlich models were fitted at 4, 20, and 36 °C. The thermodynamic propert... [more]
Numerical Investigation of a Free-Piston Hydrogen-Gasoline Engine Linear Generator
Ziwei Zhang, Huihua Feng, Zhengxing Zuo
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: different ignition timings, free-piston engine linear generator, gasoline with hydrogen, hydrogen volume fraction
The free-piston engine linear generator (FPELG) is being investigated by many researchers because of its high thermal efficiency and its variable compression ratio. However, all researchers focused on the FPELG characteristics with mono-fuel. Therefore, in this paper, the performance of the FPELG that has adopted gasoline with hydrogen as fuel is investigated. The method of coupling the zero-dimensional dynamics model with the multi-dimensional CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) combustion model was applied during the simulation process. According to the results, the piston TDC (Top Dead Center), the piston peak piston velocity, and the system operation frequency show a negative correlation with the increase of hydrogen fractions. However, the peak in-cylinder pressure was increased with the hydrogen volume fraction increase, due to the fast flame speed and short combustion duration characteristics of hydrogen. Meanwhile, the indicated efficiency of the free-piston engine was increased... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brittle–ductile transition, geothermal energy, geothermal exploration, geothermal mapping, hydrothermal convection, seismicity, supercritical geothermal resources
A considerable number of rock bodies with varying percentages of supercritical fluid exist around the brittle−ductile transition (BDT) zone at a depth of several kilometers from the surface of the Earth, in northeastern Japan. As the BDT zone in the granitic basement of the continental crust is estimated to occur at about 380 °C, the identification of the depth corresponding to 380 °C is important to utilize the thermal energy inside the “supercritical geothermal systems”. In this study, we focused on an estimation method to determine the depth of the isothermal layer corresponding to 380 °C, using the activity index (AI) obtained from the maximum-temperature data of the geothermal wells and hot springs. The thermal profiles of deep and hot exploration boreholes and the hypocentral distribution of natural earthquakes were used to evaluate the characteristics and accuracy of the deep thermal structure, using the activity index. The estimated depth corresponding to 380 °C tended to be hi... [more]

Keywords: cementing, cleanup fluid, filter cake, glycerol, microemulsion
Oil well cleanup fluids (pre-flushes) are intermediate fluids pumped ahead of the cement slurry; they are able to clean the well walls by removing the filter cake formed by the drilling fluid, and leave the surface water-wet. This work’s main objective was to use biodegradable microemulsion systems as cleanup fluids in order to reduce the environmental impact. Three microemulsion systems were formulated, each composed of an oil phase, a surfactant and three different aqueous phases: glycerol, glycerol:water (mass ratio 1:1), and fresh water. The results show that all microemulsion systems were effective with 100% filter cake removal, with a removal time of less than 60 s. The wettability test and fluid compatibility analyses exhibited advantageous performances, without phase separation, variations in viscosity, gelation, or flocculation. The compressive strength and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis showed the influence of the glycerol on the cement slurry properties, with the compre... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANFO, charcoal, morphology, SEM
In this study, we examined the influence of microstructured charcoal (MC) when added to ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) samples. We performed a study that investigated ANFOs structure, crystallinity, and morphology by utilizing infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. MC characteristics were probed by Raman spectroscopy and SEM analysis. SEM analysis indicated how fuel oil (FO) covered ammonium nitrate prill. Moreover, the surface of the MC was covered by specific microfibers and microtubes. The disordered graphitic structure of the MC was also confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Simulation of blasting properties revealed that the addition of MC should decrease blasting parameters like heat explosion, detonation pressure, and detonation temperature. However, the obtained differences are negligible in comparison with the regular ANFO. All analyses indicated that MC was a good candidate as an additive to ANFO.

Keywords: AC-AC conversion, modular multilevel converters, Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter
The Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter is a relatively new power converter topology appropriate for high-power Alternating Current (AC) to AC purposes. Several publications in the literature have highlighted the converter capabilities such as modularity, control flexibility, the possibility to include redundancy, and power quality. Nevertheless, the topology and control of this converter are relatively complex to design and implement, considering that the converter has a large number of cells and floating capacitors. Therefore multilayer nested control systems are required to maintain the capacitor voltage of each cell regulated within an acceptable range. There are no other review papers where the modelling, control systems and applications of the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter are discussed. Hence, this paper aims to facilitate further research by presenting the technology related to the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter, focusing on a comprehensive revision of the modelling... [more]

Keywords: distribution of charging stations, electric vehicle, electromobility, evaluation, local authorities, minimum state of charge, range anxiety, routing, spatial analysis, travel planner
Development of electromobility in urban areas requires an appropriate level of vehicle charging infrastructure. Numerous methods for siting of charging stations have been developed to date, and they appear to be delivering diverse outcomes for the same area, which is why local authorities face the problem of choosing the right station layout. The solution proposed in this article is to use a travel planner to evaluate the distribution of charging stations over the area of a metropolis. The decision making support is achieved by determining optimal travel routes for electric vehicles according to their initial state of charge for the three selected station siting methods. The evaluation focused on the following three aspects: (1) number of travels that cannot be made (due to the lack of a charging station at a certain distance around the start point), (2) extension of the travel caused by the need to recharge the vehicle on-route, and (3) additional energy consumption by electric vehicl...
