Andrés Ruiz, Florin Onea, Eugen Rusu
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, coastal environment, future projections, Spanish nearshore, wind energy
The objective of the present study is to show a comprehensive assessment of the wind resource dynamics along the Spanish coastal environment of the Iberian Peninsula. After studying the historical resources (reported at 100 m height) for the 20-year period from 1999 to 2018 by analyzing the ERA5 time series of wind speed data, the 10 locations with highest historical wind resources are considered. For these, the study of the future dynamics for the 30-year period from 2021 to 2050 under the climate change scenario RCP 4.5 is carried out. After further selection, mean and maximum values, as well as the seasonal and monthly variability of the wind power density, are obtained for six locations along the Spanish coasts. Furthermore, a performance and economic dynamics assessment is presented for four different wind turbine technologies with rated capacities ranging between 3 and 9.5 MW. A further comparison with other locations in the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea is presented to provide a... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Buck-Boost DC-DC converters, constant power loads, DC micro-grids, Model Predictive Control, PID Type-III voltage-mode compensation, reference governor
Power distribution systems nowadays are highly penetrated by renewable energy sources, and this explains the dominant role of power electronic converters in their operation. However, the presence of multiple power electronic conversion units gives rise to the so-called phenomenon of Constant Power Loads (CPLs), which poses a serious stability challenge in the overall operation of a DC micro-grid. This article addresses the problem of enhancing the stability margin of boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters employed in DC micro-grids under uncertain mixed load conditions. This is done with a recently proposed methodology that relies on a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) controller, comprised by a voltage-mode Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) (Type-III) primary controller and a reference governor (RG) secondary controller. This complementary scheme adjusts the imposed voltage reference dynamically and is designed in an optimal fashion via the Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology b... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: additives, ball milling, calcium borohydride, differential scanning calorimetry, hydrogen storage, kinetics of the hydrogen desorption, polymorphs, powder X-ray diffraction, reaction pathways, vibrational spectroscopy
The changes introduced by both ball milling and the addition of small amounts of TiF3 in the kinetics of the hydrogen desorption of three different Ca(BH4)2 polymorphs (α, β and γ) have been systematically investigated. The samples with different polymorphic contents, before and after the addition of TiF3, were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy. The hydrogen desorption reaction pathways were monitored by differential scanning calorimetry. The hydrogen desorption of Ca(BH4)2 depends strongly on the amount of coexistent α, β and γ polymorphs as well as additional ball milling and added TiF3 to the sample. The addition of TiF3 increased the hydrogen desorption rate without significant dissociation of the fluoride. The combination of an α-Ca(BH4)2 rich sample with 10 mol% of TiF3 and 8 h of milling led to up to 27 °C decrease of the hydrogen desorption peak temperature.
The Effect of the Axial Heat Transfer on Space Charge Accumulation Phenomena in HVDC Cables
Giuseppe Rizzo, Pietro Romano, Antonino Imburgia, Fabio Viola, Guido Ala
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HVDC cables, space charge, thermal rating
To date, it has been widespread accepted that the presence of space charge within the dielectric of high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables is one of the most relevant issues that limits the growing diffusion of this technology and its use at higher voltages. One of the reasons that leads to the establishment of space charge within the insulation of cables is the temperature dependence of its conductivity. Many researchers have demonstrated that high temperature drop over the insulation layer can lead to the reversal of the electric field profile. In certain conditions, this can over-stress the insulation during polarity reversal (PR) and transient over voltages (TOV) events accelerating the ageing of the dielectric material. However, the reference standards for the thermal rating of cables are mainly thought for alternating current (AC) cables and do not adequately take into account the effects related to high thermal drops over the insulation. In particular, the difference in tempe... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fish impact, fish-lighting complementary, photovoltaic power station, water quality variation
Fish-lighting complementary photovoltaic power station organically combines aquaculture and renewable energy. In this study we aimed to develop a solar photovoltaic that is not confined to land. We used a shade net to simulate photovoltaic panels, and studied the effects of different proportions of photovoltaic panels on water and fish. The results showed that the average light intensity of the unshaded area and the shaded area were 16,661.7 Lux and 2437.0 Lux. The average light intensity of the shaded area was 85.4% lower than that of the unshaded area. The effective range of the shaded area for the light intensity of the water layer was 0 cm~30 cm. The temperature and pH in the water body showed a linear decreasing trend with the increase of the photovoltaic deployment ratio, and the dissolved oxygen showed an inverted “U”-shaped change characteristic, but this effect was limited. When the photovoltaic deployment ratio was 25% to 75%, the dissolved oxygen in the water body increases... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: hybrid dc circuit breaker, solid-state switch, vacuum arc commutation, vacuum arc voltage
Vacuum arc commutation is an important process in natural-commutate hybrid direct current (DC) circuit breaker (NHCB) interruption, as the duration of vacuum arc commutation will directly affect the arcing time and interrupting time of NHCB. In this paper, the vacuum arc commutation model of NHCB was established by simplifying solid-state switch (SS) and vacuum arc voltage. Through theoretical analysis and experiments, the vacuum arc commutation characteristics of NHCB were studied. The mathematical formula of the effect of main parameters on the duration of vacuum arc commutation is obtained, and the changing law of the influence of the main parameters on the duration of the vacuum arc commutation is explored. The concept of vacuum arc commutation coefficient is proposed, and it is a key parameter that influences the vacuum arc commutation characteristics. The research on the characteristics of vacuum arc commutation can provide theoretical foundation for the structure and parameter o... [more]

Keywords: Component Connection Method, power electronics-based systems, stability analysis, state-space methods, virtual synchronous generators
In modern power electronics-based power systems, accurate modeling is necessary in order to analyze stability and the interaction between the different elements, which are connected to it. State space modeling seems a valid approach to study the modes of a certain system and their correlation with its states. Unfortunately, this approach may require complicated calculations and it is difficult to model advanced or emerging control techniques for grid-tied converters, such as cascaded controllers (e.g., voltage and current) and virtual synchronous generators (VSGs). Moreover, this approach does not allow an easy reconfiguration of the modeled system by adding, removing of modifying certain elements. To solve such problems, this paper presents a step-by-step approach to the converter modeling based on the Component Connection Method (CCM). The CCM is explained in detail and a practical example is given, by modeling one exemplary VSG model available in the literature. The obtained model i... [more]

Nader Anani, Haider Ibrahim
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ideality factor, parameter extraction, photocurrent, saturation current, series resistance, shunt resistance, single-diode model
This paper presents a succinct exploration of several analytical methods for extracting the parameters of the single-diode model (SDM) of a photovoltaic (PV) module under standard test conditions (STC). The paper investigates six methods and presents the detailed mathematical analysis leading to the development of each method. To evaluate the performance of these methods, MATLAB-based software has been devised and deployed to generate the results of each method when used to extract the SDM parameters of various PV test modules of different PV technologies. Similar software has also been developed to extract the same parameters using well-established numerical and iterative techniques. A comparison is subsequently made between the synthesized results and those obtained using numerical and iterative methods. The comparison indicates that although analytical methods may involve a significant amount of approximations, their accuracy can be comparable to that of their numerical and iterativ... [more]

Keywords: coupling vibration, energy-based vibration model, high-speed elevator, precise integration, traction system
Vibration of a high-speed elevator is one of the major factors contributing to a safe, stable and comfortable ride. Vibration control and systematic optimization rely on the establishment of an accurate and reliable model. An energy-based vibration model (EVM) is proposed in this paper to describe the multi-directional coupling properties of high-speed elevators. After analyzing the structural and kinematic characteristics, a combination of the kinematic energy, elastic potential energy and virtual works is implemented to describe the vibrational characteristics. The Gaussian precise integration method is implemented to obtain accurate solutions because of the infinite degrees of freedom and the time-varying parameters. An example study is conducted using the KLK2 high-speed elevator. EVM is established to obtain the Max(Pk)/Pk and A95 indices of the X, Y, Z axis vibrational acceleration through simulations. A comparison is proposed between the proposed EVM method, conventional methods... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: apartment complexes, battery storage, empirical analysis, energy autonomy, self-sufficiency, shared energy microgrid, shared PV storage, solar PV
More than 2 million houses in Australia have installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems; however, apartment buildings have adopted a low percentage of solar PV and battery storage installations. Given that grid usage reduction through PV and battery storage is a primary objective in most residential buildings, apartments have not yet fully benefited from installations of such systems. This research presents shared microgrid configurations for three apartment buildings with PV and battery storage and evaluates the reduction in grid electricity usage by analyzing self-sufficiency. The results reveal that the three studied sites at White Gum Valley achieved an overall self-sufficiency of more than 60%. Owing to the infancy of the shared solar and battery storage market for apartment complexes and lack of available data, this study fills the research gap by presenting preliminary quantitative findings from implementation in apartment buildings.

Kihyun Kim, Ocktaeck Lim
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atomization, fuel blending, long distance microscopy, shadowgraph, spray cone angle, spray tip penetration
This study investigated gasoline−biodiesel blended fuel (GB) subjected to a fuel spray development process on macroscopic and microscopic scales. The four tested fuels were neat gasoline and gasoline containing biodiesel (5%, 20%, and 40% by volume) at three different ratios. The initial spray near the nozzle revealed that the spray penetration and spray tip velocity both decreased with decreasing biodiesel blending ratio. In addition, the different spray tip velocities at the start of spraying result in different atomization regimes between the fuels. The GB fuels with a low biodiesel blending ratio were disadvantaged in terms of spray atomization due to their lower spray penetration and tip velocity. The macroscopic spray penetration changes were similar to those observed in the microscopic spray. The fuel with the lower biodiesel blending ratio had a larger spray cone angle, indicating increased radial spray dispersion.

Keywords: critical elements, geochemistry, hydrothermal fluids, mineralogy, Weibei coalfield
Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of coals provide crucial information on their potential clean, efficient, and integrated utilization. In this paper, the mineralogical and geochemical behaviors of the No. 5 coals of the Taiyuan Formation in the Weibei Coalfield, North China, were investigated, and their geological controlling factors were subsequently discussed. The minerals in the Weibei coals mainly consist of kaolinite (8.3%), calcite (5.0%), and pyrite (3.1%), with minor proportions of tobelite (2.9%), dolomite (1.7%), quartz (1.8%), and traces of siderite (0.4%) and gypsum (0.6%). Several critical elements, including Nb (19.8 mg/kg), Ta (3.6 mg/kg), Zr (71.0 mg/kg) and Li (32.3 mg/kg), occur at concentrations higher than those averages for world hard coals, making the Weibei coals potential sources of these critical elements. Several factors, terrigenous material, seawater invasion, and hydrothermal fluids are responsible for these mineralogical and geochemical charac... [more]

Keywords: condition monitoring, convolutional neural networks, generator, real-time diagnostic, wind turbine
Data-driven wind generator condition monitoring systems largely rely on multi-stage processing involving feature selection and extraction followed by supervised learning. These stages require expert analysis, are potentially error-prone and do not generalize well between applications. In this paper, we introduce a collection of end-to-end Convolutional Neural Networks for advanced condition monitoring of wind turbine generators. End-to-end models have the benefit of utilizing raw, unstructured signals to make predictions about the parameters of interest. This feature makes it easier to scale an existing collection of models to new predictive tasks (e.g., new failure types) since feature extracting steps are not required. These automated models achieve low Mean Squared Errors in predicting the generator operational state (40.85 for Speed and 0.0018 for Load) and high accuracy in diagnosing rotor demagnetization failures (99.67%) by utilizing only raw current signals. We show how to crea... [more]

Keywords: DFA, ENSO, photovoltaic energy plant, solar radiation
The major challenge we face today in the energy sector is to meet the growing demand for electricity with less impact on the environment. South America is an important player in the renewable energy resource. Brazil accelerated the growth of photovoltaic installed capacity in 2018. From April of 2017 to April of 2018, the capacity increased by 1351.5%. It is expected to reach the value of 2.4 GW until the end of the year. The new Chilean regulation requests that 20% of the total electricity production in 2025 must come from renewable energy sources. The aim of this paper is to establish time series behavior changes between El Niño Southern Oscillation and the solar radiation resource in South America. The results can be used to validate the measured data of energy production for new solar plants. The method used to verify the behavior of the time series was the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis. Solar radiation data were collected in twenty-five cities distributed inside the Brazilian sol... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: grouting reinforcement, rock fracture, shear properties, tensile properties
Grouting reinforcement plays an important role in repairing fractures and improving the strength of the surrounding rock. To address practical engineering challenges such as caving and chip off-falling of surrounding rock in deep roadways, normal splitting was adopted to prefabricate fractures on rock samples gathered from underground coal mines. This was done to better match the rock fracture specimen with actual conditions. Based on the elementary unit of a fracture surface, systematic experiments were conducted on the tensile properties of rock fractures after grouting reinforcement, and the shear properties were studied after considering the presence of gas. As per the results, the tensile strength of rock fractures increased with the increase in viscosity of grout, but the overall tensile strength was relatively low. The overall tensile effect of surrounding rock was improved less by grouting approach. When the presence of fracture gas in grouting was considered, the peak shear st... [more]

Keywords: architecture, attack surfaces, IoT, smart grid, threats, vulnerabilities
In recent years, people have witnessed numerous Internet of Things (IoT)-based attacks with the exponential increase in the number of IoT devices. Alongside this, the means to secure IoT-based applications are maturing slower than our budding dependence on them. Moreover, the vulnerabilities in an IoT system are exploited in chains to penetrate deep into the network and yield more adverse aftereffects. To mitigate these issues, this paper gives unique insights for handling the growing vulnerabilities in common IoT devices and proposes a threat architecture for IoT, addressing threats in the context of a three-layer IoT reference architecture. Furthermore, the vulnerabilities exploited at the several IoT attack surfaces and the challenges they exert are explored. Thereafter, the challenges in quantifying the IoT vulnerabilities with the existing framework are also analyzed. The study also covers a case study on the Intelligent Transportation System, covering road transport and traffic c... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic generation control, load fluctuation, load frequency control, operating reserve
Industrial equipment such as electric arc furnaces and steel mills are often associated with rapid and high load disturbances, so their power systems require additional control equipment to limit the frequency. However, proper ancillary service fees are not paid in these cases with extreme and variable load demands. The frequency regulation reserve equipment adds to power generation costs. Therefore, variable power generation loads lead to increases in the cost of energy production. We propose a load frequency control method that is applied on the customer end instead of the power supply end to reduce the operating reserve required to improve the energy efficiency of the power system. We analyzed the load fluctuation of steel mill customers using real data sampled at two-second intervals from the energy management system in Korea. We developed an automatic generation control program to simulate the power system’s frequency characteristics. We also propose compensation techniques for mi... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: economic market model, energy policy, energy poverty, gini index, smart market, social electricity tariff
This paper presents an evaluation of public policies for fare social tariffs of electricity in Brazil by using an economic model of the electricity market (TAROT-Optimized Tariff) that represents the regulated market of distribution of electrical energy. It was considered the scenario of an increasing number of prosumers (residential consumers who self-generate energy) in two of the five major regions of Brazil which have quite different socioeconomic characteristics. However, the current electricity regulation is the same for all concessionaires. In this work a new public policy is proposed, allowing the use of regulation in a different way aiming for a best result for Brazil and particularly for the poor population that today are not able to enjoy the benefits of electricity due to high tariff values. It is also discussed how this can contribute in a positive way to improve the income distribution in these regions, which is evaluated by using the GINI index.

Keywords: inverter power sizing factor, partial shading condition, performance analysis, power degradation, soiling
Partial shading conditions of photovoltaic (PV) modules often occurs in urban areas leading to losses in electricity power generation of the PV power plant. The purpose of this study is to present how the PV power plant with high value of inverter power sizing factor (Kinv) can achieve high performance and power production under partial shading conditions with high shading losses. In this paper the results of long-term monitoring, performance analysis and experimental results are presented, while the results are compared to the estimated values calculated using PVsyst software. The study focused on the PV power plant at the Faculty of Technical Sciences (FTS) in Novi Sad, Republic of Serbia, for the period between the years 2012 and 2019. It has been shown that the values of PV power plant performance parameters are better than expected (very high), and resemble the power plants operating without shading. The high value of the inverter power sizing factor may lead to occasional saturat... [more]
Load Management Strategies to Increase Electric Vehicle Penetration—Case Study on a Local Distribution Network in Stockholm

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution system, elecric vehicles, flexible demand, load management, smart charging
As part of decarbonization efforts, countries are adapting their energy policies accordingly. Sweden has established ambitious energy goals, which include CO2 emissions reduction in the transport sector and high integration of renewables in the electricity sector. Coupling the two can be an enabling force towards fossil freedom. An increased share of electric vehicles is therefore a promising solution in this regard. However, there are challenges concerning the impact that a surge of electric vehicles would have on the electric infrastructure. Moreover, in Stockholm there is a shortage of power capacity due to limitations in the national transmission infrastructure, which further aggravates the situation. This paper develops a scenario-based simulation study to evaluate the impact of electric vehicle loads on the distribution grid of a Stockholm neighborhood. In this process, limiting factors and bottlenecks in the network were identified as being related to the peak power and transfor... [more]

Keywords: active magnetic bearing, energy harvesting, magnetic coupling, MFC-magnet, rotor vibration measurement, self-powered sensor
The paper presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of an energy harvester for an active magnetic bearing (AMB) rotor vibration using a macro fiber composite (MFC) with magnetic coupling. The MFC cantilevers configuration, together with neodymium magnets, is used for the contact-free rotor radial vibration self-powered sensor. The permanent magnets attached to the rotor and to the four MFC element beams ensure the mechanical energy transfer and the MFC cantilever vibration excitation. In the proposed prototype, the MFC transducer output voltage depends on the air-gap between two magnets. This paper investigates the optimum conditions to harvest as much as possible electric energy at different clearances and rotational speeds. Furthermore, to assess the rotor vibration sensitivity, the experimental results of the MFC-magnet self-powered sensor are compared with measurements obtained using a fiber optic sensor. The maximal obtained harvesting power equals 673.47 µW for the r... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, commercial center, CSP, parabolic trough, solar cogeneration, solar cooling
This paper performs technical, economic and environmental feasibility analyses of two different solar cogeneration plants, consisting of a solar system (a parabolic trough collector field coupled with thermal energy storage), an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), and mechanical chillers, that should cover the electrical and cooling demands of a commercial center located in Zaragoza (Spain). System A is hybridized with an auxiliary biomass boiler that complements the solar system’s thermal production, providing a constant heat supply to the ORC, which operates at full load during the operating hours of the solar system. In contrast, system B is not hybridized with biomass, so the ORC is fully driven by the solar system, operating at partial load according to the solar resource availability. Both systems are connected to the electrical grid, allowing electricity purchases and sales when needed. The design procedure involves the sizing of the equipment as well as the modelling of the hourly beh... [more]

Keywords: cathode, doping, fluorine, LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, lithium-ion batteries
For advanced lithium-ion batteries, LiNixCoyMnzO2 (x + y + z = 1) (NCM) cathode materials containing a high nickel content have been attractive because of their high capacity. However, to solve severe problems such as cation mixing, oxygen evolution, and transition metal dissolution in LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathodes, in this study, F-doped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCMF) was synthesized by solid-state reaction of a NCM and ammonium fluoride, followed by heating process. From X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the oxygen in NCM can be replaced by F− ions to produce the F-doped NCM structure. The substitution of oxygen with F− ions may produce relatively strong bonds between the transition metal and F and increase the c lattice parameter of the structure. The NCMF cathode exhibits better electrochemical performance and stability in half- and full-cell tests compared to the NCM cathode.
