Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite materials, electric vehicles, Energy Efficiency, energy harvesting
The field of energy harvesting is expanding to power various devices, including electric vehicles, with energy derived from their surrounding environments. The unique mechanical and electrical qualities of composite materials make them ideal for energy harvesting applications, and they have shown tremendous promise in this area. Yet additional studies are needed to fully grasp the promise of composite materials for energy harvesting in electric vehicles. This article reviews composite materials used for energy harvesting in electric vehicles, discussing mechanical characteristics, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. As a bonus, it delves into using composites in piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and thermoelectric energy harvesters. The high strength-to-weight ratio provided by composite materials is a major benefit for energy harvesting. Especially important in electric vehicles, where saving weight means saving money at the pump and driving farther betwe... [more]
Fuzzy-Based Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis Applied to Cyber-Power Grids
Andrés A. Zúñiga, João F. P. Fernandes, Paulo J. C. Branco
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyber-power grids, FMECA, fuzzy inference systems, fuzzy-based FMECA, risk assessment
Failure modes, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA) is a qualitative risk analysis method widely used in various industrial and service applications. Despite its popularity, the method suffers from several shortcomings analyzed in the literature over the years. The classical approach to obtain the failure modes’ risk level does not consider any relative importance between the risk factors and may not necessarily represent the real risk perception of the FMECA team members, usually expressed by natural language. This paper introduces the application of Type-I fuzzy inference systems (FIS) as an alternative to improve the failure modes’ risk level computation in the classic FMECA analysis and its use in cyber-power grids. Our fuzzy-based FMECA considers first a set of fuzzy variables defined by FMECA experts to embody the uncertainty associated with the human language. Second, the “seven plus or minus two” criterion is used to set the number of fuzzy sets to each variable, forming a... [more]
Economic Assessment of a PV-HP System for Drying Alfalfa in The North of Spain
Antonio Quijano, Celena Lorenzo, Luis Narvarte
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: drying, economic assessment, heat pumps, photovoltaic
This paper presents an economic assessment of three drying systems (DS) with different configurations: diesel-powered (DDS), grid-powered (GDS), and photovoltaic-powered (PVDS). The third configuration, PVDS, presents important technological innovations regarding the electric configuration (stand-alone PV, without batteries or grid support) and the heat pump technology used (optimized for drying the recirculated air, which permits a reduction in the electricity consumption by more than 45% if compared to a diesel air-heater or an electric resistance). The profitability of the investment required for the installation of the three systems is proven by calculating the profitability index (PI), the internal rate of return (IRR), the payback period (PBP), and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). All the indicators show good profitabilities for the three technologies (the PI values range from 6.78 to 10.11, the IRR values range from 24% to 37%, and the PBPs are between 3 and 4 years), but th... Precipitation of Barium Sulphate during the Waterflooding Process in Polish Offshore Oilfields—Case Analysis
Michał Gruszka, Stanisław Nagy
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: barite, mineral precipitation, oil production, scaling, waterflooding
The fundamentals of scaling during waterflooding of an oilfield are presented. Mineral precipitation is described using both the kinetics approach, with the corresponding equations given, and the thermodynamic models’ theoretical foundation discussed—mainly specific ion interaction and Pitzer models. This paper focuses on the process of mixing incompatible waters during both water injection and production from an oilfield, as this was identified as a primary reason for barium sulphate precipitation. Two methods of minimizing the risk of solid phase deposition during the mixing of water using the addition of inhibitors and removal of sulfur compounds through a membrane system before water injection into the bed are shown. In addition, formation damage to the near-well zone is discussed with its implications for field operators. Using thermodynamics, especially equations based on the HKF-SRK modified model, this paper describes typical conditions for barium sulphate precipitation during... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biogas, combined heat and power (CHP), conceptual design, efficiency, food waste to energy, heat pump, preliminary economic assessment, sensitivity analysis
This paper presents the conceptual design of a technological solution for the efficient conversion of food waste into heat and power. The distribution and composition of food loss and waste at different stages of the food supply chain in Slovenia and their potential for biogas production were determined. It was found that more than 50% of food waste comes from households. Therefore, a small plant was designed to convert food waste into biogas, which was innovatively coupled with a combined heat and power (CHP) unit and a heat pump. This doubles the amount of heat generated compared to conventional cogeneration. Based on the capacity of a micro commercial CHP unit, 3330 households (about 8000 residents) would supply food waste. The heat generated could replace 5% of the natural gas used for domestic water heating. The payback period would be 7.2 years at a heat price of about 80 EUR/MWh, however, for municipalities with more than 40,000 inhabitants the payback period would be reduced to... [more]

Hary Demey, Gilles Ratel, Bruno Lacaze, Olivier Delattre, Geert Haarlemmer, Anne Roubaud
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: black liquor, catalyst, hydrogen production, supercritical water gasification (SCWG), wastewater treatment
In this work, the wastewater obtained from the hydrothermal liquefaction of black liquor was treated and valorized for hydrogen production by supercritical water gasification (SCWG). The influence of the main process parameters on the conversion yield was studied. The experiments were conducted at three different temperatures (below and above the critical point of water): 350 °C, 450 °C and 600 °C. The results showed that by increasing the temperature from 350 °C to 600 °C, the total gas yield was highly improved (from 1.9 mol gas/kg of dried feedstock to 13.1 mol gas/kg of dried feedstock). The H2 composition was higher than that of CH4 and CO2 at 600 °C, and the HHV of the obtained gas was 61.2 MJ/kg. The total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency was also improved by increasing the temperature, indicating that the SCWG process could be used for both applications: (i) for wastewater treatment; (ii) for producing a high calorific gas. The experiments with the Raney-nickel catalyst... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 geological storage, CO2-enhanced gas hydrate recovery, CO2/N2–CH4 exchange, mixed-gas hydrate, simulator development
Conventional techniques for hydrate production may cause the deconstruction of hydrate, changing the geomechanical stresses of the reservoir, which could trigger the subsidence of the seafloor. A new method for replacing CH4 from the hydrate lattice by CO2, without damaging the mechanical structure of sediment, has been proposed. This approach can achieve both the objectives of long-term CO2 sequestration and the safe production of CH4 from hydrates. By coupling the Chen-Guo model into Tough+Hydrate V1.5, an updated simulator CO2-EGHRSim V.10 (CO2 Enhanced Gas Hydrate Recovery simulator) was developed in this work to describe the replacing processes of CH4 from the hydrate lattice by CO2 and to evaluate the storage potential of CO2 and the recovery efficiency of CH4 from the hydrate-bearing reservoirs. The developed simulator was verified using measured data obtained from laboratory experiments. The verification suggested that CO2-EGHRSim performed well in predicting the replacing proc... [more]

Hongli Liu, Luoqi Wang, Ji Li, Lei Shao, Delong Zhang
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand control, energy storage systems (ESS), load forecast, long short-term memory (LSTM), particle swarm optimization (PSO), peak-valley electricity arbitrage, smart power sales
With the deepening reform of the power system, power sales companies need to adopt new power sales strategies to provide customers with better economic marketing solutions. Customer-side configuration of an energy storage system (ESS) can participate in power-related policies to reduce the comprehensive cost of electricity for commercial and industrial customers and improve customer revenue. For power sales companies, this can also attract new customers, expand sales and quickly capture the market. However, most of the ESS evaluation models studied so far are based on historical data configuration of typical daily storage capacity and charging and discharging scheduling instructions. In addition, most models do not adequately consider the performance characteristics of the ESS and cannot accurately assess the economics of the energy storage model. This study proposes an intelligent power sales strategy based on load forecasting with the participation of optimal allocation of ESS. Based... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, hydraulic modelling, water distribution systems, water loss
Water and energy are the main natural resources, and their rational use is the basis for sustainable development. Therefore, the energy efficiency of water supply networks is one of the priorities for the management system of water utilities. Many methods and indicators can be used to assess the energy efficiency of water distribution networks (WDNs), and their choice should be adapted to the characteristics of a WDN. This paper presents an energy audit of WDNs that are supplied from five reservoirs located above the supply area, to which water is supplied from four underground and surface water intakes. In the analysis of the system operation, a hydrodynamic computer model of the water distribution network was used to estimate the operating parameters that are necessary to determine the energy efficiency indicators. A new method for calibrating the emitter coefficient used for water loss modeling is also proposed. The conducted audit showed that more than 70% of the energy supplied to... [more]
Integrating Risk Preferences into Game Analysis of Price-Making Retailers in Power Market
Chen Zhao, Jiaqi Sun, Ping He, Shaohua Zhang, Yuqi Ji
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity market, electricity retailers, equilibrium, risk preference
In the restructured electricity market, retailers are intermediaries between the electricity wholesale market and consumers. Considering the uncertainty of wholesale market price, retailers should consider the risks of their profit caused by the uncertain wholesale price when participating in the retail competition. Indeed, retailers’ risk preferences will impact their price bidding strategies. To examine the effects of retailers’ risk preferences on their strategies and equilibrium outcomes in the retail market, an equilibrium model for price-making retailers is proposed by employing the mean−variance utility theory to model the risk preferences of retailers. The market share function is used to characterize consumers’ price-elasticity and switching behavior in the retail market. Few works in the literature address the issue of bidding strategies of retailers with different risk preferences in the electricity market with switchable consumers. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CO2 storage, CO2-WAG, NSGA-II, optimization study, proxy model
Optimization studies are an important task in reservoir engineering practices such as production optimization and EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) assessments. However, they are extensive studies with many simulations that require huge computational effort and resources. In terms of EOR, CO2 injection is one of the most common methods employed due to a high recovery potential and environmental benefits. To assess the feasibility of CO2-EOR projects, a reservoir design study must be conducted before optimization is performed. Some studies have demonstrated the advantages of employing proxy models to perform this task in terms of saving huge amounts of computer memory space and time. In this study, proxy models were developed to solve a multi-objective optimization problem using NSGA-II (Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II) in two selected reservoir models. The study was performed for a CO2-WAG (Water Alternating Gas) application, where gas and water injection rates and half-cycle leng... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conducted emission (CE), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic interference (EMI), powerline communication (PLC)
G3-powerline communication (G3-PLC) is a robust communication protocol originally developed for smart metering in low-voltage power distribution networks. Modeling G3-PLC modems is an essential task to investigate electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues related to the coexistence of the PLC signal with the high-frequency noise affecting low-voltage networks, mainly due to the presence of power converters and non-linear loads. Since detailed information on the modem internal architecture is usually not available to the end-user, this work investigates the possibility of developing behavioral (black-box) models of G3-PLC modems, whose parameters can be estimated starting from measurements carried out at the modem output ports. To this end, suitable test benches are set up and used for model-parameter extraction as well as for validation purposes. Experiments have proven that an equivalent representation involving non-ideal voltage sources (i.e., in terms of extended Thevenin/Norton eq... [more]

Keywords: deep neural networks, hydropower, hydropower scheduling, linear regression, Machine Learning, Optimization, random forest, reinforcement learning, stochastic programming
Hydropower is the most prevalent source of renewable energy production worldwide. As the global demand for robust and ecologically sustainable energy production increases, developing and enhancing the current energy production processes is essential. In the past decade, machine learning has contributed significantly to various fields, and hydropower is no exception. All three horizons of hydropower models could benefit from machine learning: short-term, medium-term, and long-term. Currently, dynamic programming is used in the majority of hydropower scheduling models. In this paper, we review the present state of the hydropower scheduling problem as well as the development of machine learning as a type of optimization problem and prediction tool. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey article that provides a comprehensive overview of machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in the hydroelectric power industry for scheduling, optimization, and prediction.

Luca Micoli, Roberta Russo, Tommaso Coppola, Andrea Pietra
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 0D-model, Aspen Plus, cruise ship, heat recovery, solid oxide fuel cell
The present work considers a 12 MW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) power plant integrated with a heat recovery system installed on board an LNG-fuelled cruise ship of about 175,000 gross tonnes and 345 m in length. The SOFC plant is fed by LNG and generates electrical power within an integrated power system configuration; additionally, it provides part of the thermal energy demand. A zero-dimensional (0D) Aspen Plus model has been built-up to simulate the SOFC power plant and to assess the performances of the proposed heat recovery system. The model has been validated by comparing the results obtained with data from the literature and commercial SOFC modules. The integrated system has been optimized in order to maximize steam production since it is the most requested thermal source on board. The main design outcome is that the steam produced is made by the recovered water from the SOFC exhaust by about 50−60%, thus reducing the onboard water storage or production. Additionally, results in... [more]
Evaporation and Autoignition Characteristics of JP-10 Droplets with Hyperbranched Polyester as Additive
Derui Jin, Ji Mi, Yongsheng Guo, Yitong Dai, Wenjun Fang
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: droplet combustion, droplet evaporation, hyperbranched polyester, JP-10, micro-explosion
It was found in our previous work that hyperbranched polyester (HPE) can generate radicals and accelerate the chemical reactions of hydrocarbon fuels used as initiators. In this work, the evaporation and autoignition characteristics of JP-10 droplets with or without HPE were investigated using the high-speed backlight imaging technique in detail. The results indicate that the puffing and micro-explosion phenomena of HPE-blended JP-10 droplets can accelerate fuel evaporation and autoignition. When a 0.1% mass concentration of HPE was used, the droplet lifetime was reduced by 16.5% in evaporation at 850 K and 18.0% in autoignition at 900 K. A mechanism of HPE that promotes puffing and micro-explosions was proposed by analyzing droplet images of combustion and SEM images of combustion residues. Overall, this study provides a method for improving the evaporation and autoignition performance of JP-10.
Ashes Qualified as a Source of Selected Critical Elements (REY, Co, Ga, V)
Ewa Strzałkowska
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical elements, fly ash, grain classes, particle size, rare earth elements
The subject of the research involved fly ashes from several power plants in Poland, produced in the process of hard coal and lignite combustion. The objective of this article was to determine the concentration and distribution of elements strategic for the EU economy in ashes and in their two finest grain classes (below 20 µm and 45 µm). The differences in grain size of these ashes, as shown by granulometric tests, were significant. The concentrations of elements in the ashes and in grain classes were compared with the world average (Clarke value) for this raw material. For the majority of critical elements, a dependence of the concentration on the size of ash particles was observed. The content of REY (Rare earth elements and yttrium) and other critical elements in hard coal ashes increases with decreasing particle size. Despite the increase in the concentration of REY in the class below 20 µm, the Clarke value of these elements was not exceeded. Pearson’s correlation coefficients con... [more]
A Novel Analysis of Energy Density Considerations and Its Impacts on the Cost of Electrical Energy Storage (EES) Plants
Heidar Jafarizadeh, Madjid Soltani, Jatin Nathwani
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CAES, cryogenic tank, dead zone, heat leakage, LAES, techno-economic
Geological restrictions and the low energy density of compressed air energy storage (CAES) plants constitute a technical and economic barrier to the enablement of variable and intermittent sustainable sources of energy production. Liquid air energy storage (LAES) and pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) systems offer a promising pathway for increasing the share of renewable energy in the supply mix. PTES remains under development while LAES suffers from low liquefaction unit efficiency, although it is at a higher technology readiness level (TRL) than PTES. The most significant element of large-scale EES is related to the discharge features of the power plants, especially the energy storage unit. Here, a novel multi-aspect equation, based on established codes and thermodynamic principles, is developed to quantify the required storage capacity to meet demand consistent with the design parameters and operational limitations of the system. An important conclusion of the application of the... [more]
A Compensation Model for Packet Loss Using Kalman Filter in Wireless Network Control Systems
Carlos Alexandre Gouvea da Silva, Edson Leonardo dos Santos
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control mesh, Kalman filter, packet loss, system control network, WNCS
In Wireless Network Control System (WNCS), a study approach is relevant for the development and analysis of control strategies that provide the operation of dynamic systems. Among the real characteristics of the communication channels, a packet loss is one of the main deficiencies present in the transmission of data in a wireless network. For a dynamic system in the presence of losses, a filtering technique makes it possible to estimate system states using process output measurements and to mitigate a performance drop. It is important to study packet losses in Wireless Network Control Systems because packet loss can severely degrade the network performance. Wireless networks are particularly vulnerable to packet loss due to factors such as interference, fading and signal attenuation. The present work analyzed the behavior of a real WNCS plant at different levels of packet loss using the IEEE 802.15.4 protocol. Also, we propose a compensation model for packet loss using the Kalman filte... [more]
Impact of Electricity Price Expectation in the Planning Period on the Evolution of Generation Expansion Planning in the Market Environment
Xian Huang, Kun Liu
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity price, game theory, generation expansion planning, multi-agent, pay as bid
With the continuous promotion of China’s electricity market reform, the introduction of competition in the power generation market provides a new research direction for the generation expansion planning (GEP) problem, which is of great significance in the promotion of the optimization of the power energy structure. In the context of marketization, the electricity price expectation during the planning period is a key factor of GEP for independent power generation groups. There is some literature showing that the electricity price expectation in the planning period can be estimated according to certain laws of market supply and demand, while it seems to us that a future Pay as Bid (PAB) mechanism is better to determine the electricity price expectation. In this paper, to explore the impact of these two different electricity price formation mechanisms on the evolution of the generation market, a multi-agent framework is first established to describe the interaction process among the gener... Keywords: hydrogen production, nuclear thermal energy, solid oxide electrolysers, solid oxide electrolytes, steam electrolysis, water electrolysis
Hydrogen is known to be the carbon-neutral alternative energy carrier with the highest energy density. Currently, more than 95% of hydrogen production technologies rely on fossil fuels, resulting in greenhouse gas emissions. Water electrolysis is one of the most widely used technologies for hydrogen generation. Nuclear power, a renewable energy source, can provide the heat needed for the process of steam electrolysis for clean hydrogen production. This review paper analyses the recent progress in hydrogen generation via high-temperature steam electrolysis through solid oxide electrolysis cells using nuclear thermal energy. Protons and oxygen-ions conducting solid oxide electrolysis processes are discussed in this paper. The scope of this review report covers a broad range, including the recent advances in material development for each component (i.e., hydrogen electrode, oxygen electrode, electrolyte, interconnect, and sealant), degradation mechanisms, and countermeasures to mitigate t... April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ADCP, Delft3D, DOLfYN, marine energy, MHKiT, Tanana River, transect
The marine energy (ME) industry historically lacked a standardized data processing toolkit for common tasks such as data ingestion, quality control, and visualization. The marine and hydrokinetic toolkit (MHKiT) solved this issue by providing a public software deployment (open-source and free) toolkit for the ME industry to store and maintain commonly used functionality for wave, tidal, and river energy. This paper demonstrates an initial model verification study in MHKiT. Using Delft3D, a numerical model of the Tanana River Test Site (TRTS) at Nenana, Alaska was created. Field data from the site was collected using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) at the proposed Current Energy Converter (CEC) locations. MHKiT is used to process model simulations from Delft3D and compare them to the transect data from the ADCP measurements at TRTS. The ability to use a single tool to process simulation and field data demonstrates the ease at which the ME industry can obtain results and coll... [more]
An Optimization Method of Steam Turbine Load Resilient Adjustment by Characterizing Dynamic Changes in Superheated Steam Energy
Jiakui Shi, Shuangshuang Fan, Jiajia Li, Jiangnan Cheng, Jie Wan, Peng E
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: feedforward control, modeling and simulation, resilient adjustment, steam turbine, superheated steam energy
Improving the dynamic regulation ability of thermal power units is effective for realizing flexible scheduling in modern power systems. At present, the unit regulation capacity is usually reflected by the load adjustment of the main steam pressure and flow tracking ability, through the calculation of the given and real-time deviation to complete the load, and by pressure adjustment. However, although the calculation involved in this method is easy and the results are intuitive, overshoot and lag can easily occur. The main reason for this is that the process from boiler combustion to turbine works has strong hysteresis and inertia, and the feedback signal of the pressure and flow rate cannot dynamically reflect the change in boiler combustion and steam energy. According to the heat transfer process of the unit, the main steam temperature can directly reflect the energy transfer in the furnace combustion process and then reflect the changing trend of steam energy. Analyzing the changing... [more]

Keywords: installation effects, NASA Common Research Model, propulsion system integration, specific fuel consumption, ultra-high bypass ratio
Gas turbine fuel burn for an aircraft engine can be obtained analytically using thermodynamic cycle analysis. For large-diameter ultra-high bypass ratio turbofans, the impact of nacelle drag and propulsion system integration must be accounted for in order to obtain realistic estimates of the installed specific fuel consumption. However, simplified models cannot fully represent the complexity of installation effects. In this paper, we present a method that combines thermodynamic cycle analysis with detailed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling of the installation aerodynamics to obtain the fuel consumption at a given mission point. The flow field and propulsive forces arising in a transport aircraft powered by an ultra-high bypass ratio turbofan at cruise are first examined to characterise the operating conditions and measure the sensitivity to variations of the incidence at transonic flight.
