April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery swapping station, DLMP, driving demand, iteration method
With the development of the new energy vehicle market, the pricing of battery swapping stations (BSS) is becoming a concern. The pricing models of BSS usually only consider the interaction between the distribution system operator (DSO) and the BSS or between the BSS and electric vehicles (EVs). The impact of DSO and EVs on the pricing strategy of BSS has received less attention, which does not reflect the actual complex situation. Therefore, we propose a three-level BSS pricing method that includes market clearing and EV behaviors. Firstly, the distribution locational marginal price (DLMP) is modeled to determine the impact of the DSO on BSS. Secondly, the EV demand response is used to estimate the impact of EVs on BSS. Thirdly, to increase the adaptability of this model, an iteration algorithm with approximations and relaxations is used with mixed integer linear programming, effectively solving the pricing optimization. According to this optimization, it is evident that the BSS make d... [more]

Keywords: finite-difference time-domain method, near-field, partial discharge signal, propagation characteristics, switchgear
In the authors’ previous research, a new method for partial discharge detection in the switchgear based on near-field detection was proposed. The content of this paper is the continuation of the authors’ previous research. In order to realize the reasonable layout of the near-field magnetic field probe for partial discharge detection in the switchgear, this paper simulates and analyzes the influence of the internal structure of the switchgear on the near-field propagation characteristics of the electromagnetic wave signal generated by partial discharge, and determines the installation position of the near-field probe in the switchgear. Firstly, the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic wave signals in the different media of the switchgear are analyzed, and the switchgear model is established. Then, based on the finite difference time domain method, the influence of different devices in the switchgear on the near-field propagation of the partial discharge electromagnetic wave s... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy system, future-oriented LCA, life cycle assessment, life cycle engineering, lightweight design, material production, prospective LCA, sustainable production
Lightweight design is a common approach to reduce energy demand in the use stage of vehicles. The production of lightweight materials is usually associated with an increase in energy demand, so the environmental impacts of lightweight structures need to be assessed holistically using a life cycle assessment. To estimate the life cycle environmental impacts of a product in its developmental stage, for example, by life cycle engineering, future changes in relevant influencing factors must be considered. Prospective life cycle assessment provides methods for integrating future scenarios into life cycle assessment studies. However, approaches for integrating prospective life cycle assessment into product development are limited. The objective of this work is to provide the methodological foundation for integrating future scenarios of relevant influencing factors in the development of lightweight structures. The applicability of the novel methodology is demonstrated by a case study of a str... [more]

Michael Njoroge Gitau, Lebogang Masike, Grain P. Adams
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converter building blocks, converter cells, DC–DC converter analysis, ripple analysis
There is always a need to analyze current signals generated by various DC−DC converters. For example, to determine the current stress experienced by semiconductor devices and to evaluate active and reactive power consumption in converters. The study demonstrates that the shape of a current signal dictates the analytical expressions required to determine the average and RMS values of a signal as well as the RMS value of the ripple of that signal. The study also shows that current signals can be treated as composite waveforms comprising various combinations of trapezoidal, rectangular, and triangular pulses. The current literature lacks a unified approach to analyze current stresses in DC−DC converters. This study will propose a unified and generalized analytical technique that is applicable to any type of DC waveform that can be treated as a composite waveform made up of a combination of triangular, rectangular, or trapezoidal sections or sub-intervals. Furthermore, the rectangular and... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow ripple, hydraulic bladder damper, passive flow control, positive displacement pump, pressure ripple
Positive displacement pumps produce pressure ripple that can be reduced with the attenuation of the generated flow ripple. This paper presents the application of a gas bladder hydraulic damper with the aim of reducing the oscillations of the delivery flow rate of positive displacement machines. This work is focused on the development of a 1D fluid dynamic model of the damper, which is based on the fundamental fluid motion equations applied for a mono-dimensional flow. In order to represent the fluid flow inside the damper, a particular evaluation of the sound speed has been implemented. Experimental tests have been performed involving an axial piston pump with the damper installed in the delivery pipe to validate the model; tests were carried out at different pump working conditions and with different gas precharge pressure of the damper. The test results confirmed the effectiveness of the device, and the comparison with numerical results demonstrated a good agreement. Simulations have... [more]

Keywords: heat-discharging, iron-substituted manganese oxides, kinetic analysis, long-term thermal cycling, next-generation concentrated solar power, thermochemical storage
The heat-discharging kinetics of an iron-substituted Mn2O3/Mn3O4 redox pair subjected to long-term thermal cycling tests using a temperature swing process at high temperatures was investigated for next-generation concentrated solar power plants equipped with thermochemical energy storage. The heat-discharge mode kinetics for long-term thermal-cycled samples have never been reported. Additionally, comparisons of the heat-discharge mode kinetics for both long-term thermal-cycled and as-prepared samples have never been discussed. In terms of the reproducibility and sustainability of thermochemical energy storage, kinetic evaluations of samples with thermally stable morphologies subjected to long-term thermal cycling at high temperatures are important for next-generation solar thermal power plants. For the long-term thermal-cycled sample, the A2 model based on the Avrami−Erofeev reaction describes the discharging mode behavior in a fractional conversion range of 0−0.24, the contracting are... Keywords: banking sector development, bootstrap ARDL, ecological footprint, South Africa, Sustainability
Energy generation from carbon fuels produces a major portion of the greenhouse gases that envelop the planet and trap the sun’s heat. Fossil fuels, including coal, oil, and gas, account for approximately 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions and almost 90% of carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, there is an urgent need to finance cleaner, efficient, low-cost, sustainable, and energy-reliable alternative fuels. Therefore, we investigated the effect of oil prices, ecological footprint, banking sector development, and economic growth on energy consumption in South Africa. We employed the newly developed bootstrap autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to the link between explanatory antecedents and explained facets in the short and long term. The outcome of our study witnessed the positive and significant effect of economic growth and ecological footprint on energy consumption in the short and long run, in the case of South Africa. This suggests that a drastic boost in South African... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: assembly design, KLT-40S, local power peaking factor, optimal burnup lattice, power-flattening design
The KLT-40S is a small modular reactor developed by Russia based on the KLT-40 reactor with two fuel assembly designs: a four-ring and a five-ring. Few studies have been published on fuel assembly and power-flattening designs for the KLT-40S. In this paper, the effects of different fuel assembly designs on burnup and power flattening are investigated. This paper compares the effects of the two fuel assembly designs of the KLT-40S on its burnup characteristics, analyzes the effects of fuel rod diameter on burnup characteristics, and conducts a computational study on the ideal power-flattening design. The results show that the five-ring fuel assembly design has better burnup characteristics than the four-ring fuel assembly design. At a fuel rod diameter of 0.62 cm, the optimal burnup lattice is obtained. The 15.84% + 19.75% power-flattening design (uranium enrichment in the innermost and outermost rings + uranium enrichment in inner rings) reduces the local power peaking factor of the fi... [more]

Keywords: composite material, multi-objective structural optimization, non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, wind turbine blade
Aspects concerning resonance and global stability of a wind turbine blade must be carefully considered in its optimal design. In this paper, a composite wind turbine blade with an external geometry based on the NREL 5 MW model was subjected to multi-objective structural optimization considering these aspects. Four multi-objective structural optimization problems are formulated considering the blade mass, the maximum blade tip displacement, the natural frequencies of vibration, and the critical load factor as objective functions. The design variables are the number of plies, material, and fiber orientation. The design constraints are the materials’ margin of safety, the blade’s allowable tip displacement, and the minimum load factor. The blade model is submitted to the loads determined by the actuator lines theory and discretized in a finite element parameterized model using the Femap software according to geometric design variables. Among many multi-objective evolutionary algorithms av... [more]

Over the past few decades, the electric power industry evolved in response to growing concerns about climate change and the rising price of fossil fuels. The usage of renewable energy sources (RES) rose as a remedy for these problems. The increased penetration of RES in the existing generation system increased the need for an intelligent energy management system (EMS) so that the system can operate in any possible circumstances. Many sectors of society, including the education sector, are working to realize the importance of this sustainable energy system. This paper reviews the process of selecting an efficient control technique for continuous power flow from different RES to meet the load demand requirement using an enhanced model predictive control (MPC)-based EMS framework. This EMS is a software platform to provide fundamental support services and applications to deliver the functionality needed for the effective operation of electrical generation and transmission facilities to en... Electric vehicles are environmentally friendly and more efficient than conventional combustion vehicles. However, from the point of view of energy vectors, they may use energy produced by less efficient and more polluting means. In this paper, an applicative methodology is used to develop a charging equalizer for an electric vehicle that makes it possible to efficiently use the energy produced by a 350 W photovoltaic panel to intelligently charge the five batteries of the vehicle. In addition, using a quantitative methodology, an analysis of the different physical and electrical parameters obtained by a series of sensors installed in the vehicle is presented, and the efficiency of the system is determined. Different routes were travelled within the city of Cuenca with and without the load equalization system, which made it possible to determine an increase in vehicle efficiency of up to 27.9%, equivalent to an additional travel distance of approximately 14.35 km. This is a promising re... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disturbance observer, full-order state observer, sensorless, winding segmented permanent magnet linear motor
This paper presents a novel means of sensorless drive of the winding segmented permanent magnet linear motor (WS-PMLM). In order to solve the problem of the deviation of the position and speed estimation of the mover caused by the sharp changes of the inductance, flux linkage, and back electromotive force (EMF) between the segments of the WS-PMLM, a method for position estimation by the compound back-EMF is proposed to eliminate the blind spot of intersegment position estimation. In terms of speed estimation, a full-order speed observer method based on the dynamics equation is proposed, the configuration of the feedback gain of the observer is analyzed, and a simulation is used to verify that the full-order state observer (FSO) method can effectively reduce the estimated speed fluctuation in the intersegment region and that the speed estimation accuracy is ultimately improved.

Keywords: axial heterogeneity, deterministic, RBWR, waste burner
Hitachi is advancing their designs for a conceptual reactor called the resource-renewable boiling water reactor (RBWR), a concept reactor similar to the advanced boiling water reactor with a harder neutron spectrum. This design aims to minimise construction costs and waste production as well as to utilise separated plutonium and minor actinide fuel. However, the axial heterogeneity of the design poses calculation difficulties. The aim of this work is to use a known method, reactivity-equivalent physical transformation (RPT), for calculating fuel with double heterogeneity and apply it to a BWR-type fuel pin. This could reduce the calculation time needed for optimisation of the design of the RBWR. The objective of the study is to use SCALE 6.2 to produce an equivalent axial pin model by comparison with the burnup and neutron spectra of a radial model of the fuel. This model can then be used for 2D burnup calculations, and in future work will be used for the generation of two-group and mu... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex partial shading, CS, GWO, MIC, MPPT, photovoltaic systems, PSO
Classic algorithms show high performance in tracking the maximum power point (MPP) of photovoltaic (PV) panels under uniform irradiance and temperature conditions. However, when partial or complex partial shading conditions occur, they fail in capturing the global maximum power point (GMPP) and are trapped in one of the local maximum power points (LMPPs) leading to a loss in power. On the other hand, intelligent algorithms inspired by nature show successful performance in GMPP tracking. In this study, an MPPT system was set up in MATLAB/Simulink software consisting of six groups of serially connected PV panels, a DC-DC boost converter, and load. Using this system, the cuckoo search (CS) algorithm, the modified incremental conductivity (MIC) algorithm, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and the grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm were compared in terms of productivity, convergence speed, efficiency, and oscillation under complex shading conditions. The results showed th... [more]

Secondly, considering the travel demand and charging/discharging rules of electric vehicles, the electric vehicle optimization model is built. Further, a stochastic optimization model of micro-grid with demand response and electric vehicles is developed because of the uncertainty of photovoltaic power output. Finally, the simulation example verifies the effectiveness of the proposed model. The simulation results show that the proposed model can effectively tackle the uncertainty of photovoltaic, as well as reduce the operating cost of micro-... [more]

Keywords: control area error, frequency control, gain optimization, grey wolf optimization, solar plant, thermal plant
In this study, the load frequency control of a two-area thermal generation system based on renewable energy sources is considered. When solar generation is used in one of the control areas, the system becomes nonlinear and complicated. Zero deviations in the frequencies and the flow of power through the tie lines are achieved by considering load disturbances. A novel grey wolf optimizer, which is a metaheuristic algorithm motivated by grey wolves is utilized for tuning the controller gains. The proportional, integral, and derivative gains values are optimized for the two-area Solar integrated Thermal Plant (STP). As the load connected to the system varies continuously with time, random load variation is also applied to observe the effectiveness of the proposed optimization method. Sensitivity analyses have also been adopted with the deviation in the time constants of different systems. Inertia constant variations of both areas are considered from −25% to +25%, with or without STP. The... [more]

Keywords: gas production, multistage fractured horizontal well, natural gas hydrate, numerical simulation
In the two test productions that have been conducted in the hydrate reservoir test development zone in the South China Sea, the gas production capacity of single wells is low and the exploitation difficulty with the cost is too high for commercial demand economically. The low permeability of the hydrate-bearing layer (HBL) acts as the major barrier for pressure propagation during depressurization. Hydraulic fracturing by the combined depressurization is considered a promising hydrate production enhancement technology that can effectively improve the seepage state in the reservoir. In this study, to evaluate the effectiveness of the development methods association with fracturing, we established an idealized Class II hydrate reservoir and studied it using a multi-stage fractured horizontal well to assist in depressurization extraction. In order to evaluate the production enhancement effect of this method, we compared the gas production results of four methods, including single vertical... [more]

Keywords: integrated security systems, operation, power supply, power supply system model, reliability
The article presents basic issues associated with the power supply of integrated electronic security systems (IESS) operated in various facilities. Ensuring the reliability of an IESS power supply is an important issue associated with the operation of these systems that are responsible for the safety of people, accumulated property, natural environment, and cooperating structures—e.g., storage facilities. IESSs are operated under harsh external or internal environmental conditions. In such a case, we are dealing with processes of beneficial or adverse impact, which actively affects IESS operation. The IESS operation process is also associated with ensuring power supply continuity under normal operating conditions. This also means ensuring transition to backup power supply systems in the event of failures. Therefore, an IESS should exhibit high reliability related to the power supply process. To this end, the article presents two representative IESSs operated in buildings and in a vast... [more]

Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, fault current limiter, low-voltage ride-through, point of common coupling, series grid-side converter, wind energy conversion system
The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) suffers from voltage and frequency fluctuations due to the stochastic nature of wind speed as well as nonlinear loads. Moreover, the high penetration of wind energy into the power grid is a challenge for its smooth operation. Hence, symmetrical faults are most intense, inflicting the stator winding to low voltage, disturbing the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) functionality of a DFIG. The vector control strategy with proportional−integral (PI) controllers was used to control rotor-side converter (RSC) and grid-side converter (GSC) parameters. During a symmetrical fault, however, a series grid-side converter (SGSC) with a shunt injection transformer on the stator side was used to keep the rotor current at an acceptable level in accordance with grid code requirements (GCRs). For the validation of results, the proposed scheme of PI + SGSC is compared with PI and a combination of PI with Dynamic Impedance... [more]
