Energy Management in a Standalone Microgrid: A Split-Horizon Dual-Stage Dispatch Strategy
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: economic dispatch, energy management, energy storage system, microgrids, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Microgrid technology has recently gained global attention over increasing demands for the inclusion of renewable energy resources in power grids, requiring constant research and development in aspects such as control, protection, reliability, and management. With an ever-increasing scope for maximizing renewable energy output, there is also a need to reduce the curtailment of power on both the generation and demand sides by increasing forecasting accuracies and using resources more effectively. This paper proposes a dual-stage dispatch employing a novel “split-horizon” strategy, in a bid to enhance energy management in a standalone microgrid. The split-horizon is essentially the considered time horizon split into equal operational periods of the dual-stage dispatch. The proposed strategy utilizes a custom-designed novel variant of the inertia-weight-based particle swarm optimization (PSO), termed customized PSO, to perform the optimal schedule and dispatch operation by benefitting from... A Novel Methodology for Strengthening Stability in Electrical Power Systems by Considering Fast Voltage Stability Index under N − 1 Scenarios
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Electricity & Electrical Devices
Keywords: electrical power system, N − 1 contingency, optimal location, optimal sizing, reactive compensation, static VAR compensator
An electrical power system (EPS) is subject to unexpected events that might cause the outage of elements such as transformers, generators, and transmission lines. For this reason, the EPS should be able to withstand the failure of one of these elements without changing its operational characteristics; this operativity functionality is called N−1 contingency. This paper proposes a methodology for the optimal location and sizing of a parallel static Var compensator (SVC) in an EPS to reestablish the stability conditions of the system before N−1 contingencies take place. The system’s stability is analyzed using the fast voltage stability index (FVSI) criterion, and the optimal SVC is determined by also considering the lowest possible cost. This research considers N−1 contingencies involving the disconnection of transmission lines. Then, the methodology analyzes every scenario in which a transmission line is disconnected. For every one of them, the algorithm finds the weakest transmission... [more]

Experimental Investigation of Thermal Runaway Behavior and Hazards of a 1440 Ah LiFePO4 Battery Pack
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fire behavior, hazards, large-scale battery pack, LiFePO4 battery, propagation, thermal runaway
The thermal runaway (TR) behavior and combustion hazards of lithium-ion battery (LIB) packs directly determine the implementation of firefighting and flame-retardants in energy storage systems. This work studied the TR propagation process and dangers of large-scale LIB packs by experimental methods. The LIB pack consisted of twenty-four 60 Ah (192 Wh) LIBs with LiFePO4 (LFP) as the cathode material. Flame performance, temperature, smoke production, heat release rate (HRR), and mass loss were analyzed during the experiment. The results indicated that TR propagation of the LIB pack developed from the outside to the inside and from the middle to both sides. The development process could be divided into five stages corresponding to the combustion HRR peaks. In the initial stages, the main factor causing LFP battery TR under heating conditions was the external heat source. With the propagation of TR, heat conduction between batteries became the main factor. Hazard analysis found that the HR... [more]

An Optimization of Least-Square Harmonic Phasor Estimators in Presence of Multi-Interference and Harmonic Frequency Variance
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic harmonic phasor estimator, FIR filter, multi-interference, phasor measurement unit, singular value decomposition
The wide application of power electronic devices brings an increasing amount of undesired harmonic and interharmonic tones, and accurate harmonic phasor estimation under a complex signal input is an important task for smart grid applications. In this paper, an optimization of least-square dynamic harmonic phasor estimators, considering multi-interference and harmonic frequency variance, is proposed. A comprehensive error index (CEI) composed of the fundamental-leakage-led harmonic amplitude estimation error, harmonic mutual interference, out-of-band interference, and harmonic frequency deviation is employed. The largest CEI part of least-square algorithms using three different signal decomposition models is analyzed for the first time, and variables to reduce this error component are then introduced using singular value decomposition. With the CEI and defined variables, a minimum-error estimation of harmonic phasors under various interference and harmonic frequency change is discussed.... [more]

Tolerance-Based Demand-Side Management for Load Shifting in Rural Areas of Southern Brazil
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand, demand-side management, excessive loading, irrigator customers, load shifting, load variation
In the rural regions of southern Brazil, electricity is largely directed to irrigation activities on rice crops at restricted periods of the year. Typically, customers in these regions are called “irrigators”, and have some characteristics different from loads in urban centers, such as high demand levels and sharp load variations. These characteristics can result in problems of excessive loading on distribution grids at certain times of the day, generating concerns for the power utilities in relation to the security of the electrical system, energy supply to customers, and the integrity of electrical equipment. An alternative to avoid or mitigate these possible problems may be the application of a demand management model to irrigator customers. In this context, a load shifting strategy can be inserted to reduce demand in more critical periods and move it to intervals with lower load on the power grid. In this context, this article presents a demand-side management methodology in distri... [more]

Thermal-Hydraulic-Mechanical (THM) Modelling of Short-Term Gas Storage in a Depleted Gas Reservoir—A Case Study from South Germany
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: “battery” for power-to-gas, Dynamic Modelling, short term underground gas storage, THM modelling
This study addresses the use of former gas storage facilities as short-term storage for renewable energy through power-to-gas (PtG) technology in Germany. Three test cases with coupled thermal-hydromechanical (THM) modelling were conducted to evaluate short-term injection and production schedules. The operating rates were controlled by the upper and lower limits of the wellbore pressure. The maximum difference in pore pressure and effective stress was 0.6 MPa in all cases. Fault reactivation analysis was performed on the THM models to estimate fault stability. The critical pore pressure for safe reservoir operation was determined to be 1.25 times the original pore pressure, corresponding to a WBHP value of 20.25 MPa. The upper limit of the gas injection rate for safe storage operation was estimated to be between 100,000 and 150,000 m3/day. The thermal stresses were found to be negligible for short-term cases. The storage capacity of PtG technology was reported to be up to 1,322,400 kWh... [more]

Wear and Leakage Behaviors of Brush Seal Considering Eccentricity and Radial Deformation
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: abrasive wear, brush seal, hysteresis effect, rotor-stator eccentricity, wear model
Brush seals can improve engine performance by reducing leakage. Wear models of brush seals provide methods to predict wear and leakage. However, rotor eccentricity, radial deformation, and hysteresis effect of bristles are not considered systematically in the existing models, which may lead to large errors in some cases. To investigate the influence of rotor-stator eccentricity and radial deformation on the wear process and leakage performance of brush seal, a brush seal test was planned and executed, in which the air leakage rates were measured at different testing times and operating conditions, the eccentricity and radial deformation was measured using eddy current sensors. The test results showed that the eccentricity and radial deformation significantly affected the wear behavior and leakage performance. In the theoretical research, the abrasive wear equation is adopted to describe the material loss of bristles, and a simplified description is used to express the rotor-stator ecce... [more]

Bioflocculants as Alternative to Synthetic Polymers to Enhance Wastewater Sludge Dewaterability: A Review
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: animal-based flocculants, bioflocculants, microbial-based flocculants, plant-based flocculants, sludge dewatering
The dewatering process reduces the water quantity in sludge, allowing the decrease in its volume, which facilitates its storage, transport, stabilization, and improves the post-treatment efficiency. Chemical polymers including aluminum sulphate and polyaluminum chloride were applied as flocculants in the conditioning process in order to prepare sludge for dewatering. However, these synthetic polymers may cause risks for human health, and should be substituted with ecofriendly and safe materials. These materials include plant-based flocculants, animal-based flocculants, and microbial-based flocculants. Sludge dewaterability was evaluated by considering many parameters, such as moisture content (MC), dry solids (DS), specific resistance to filtration (SRF), capillary suction time (CST), and sludge volume index (SVI). The use of microorganisms for sludge dewatering is an available option, since many strains (R. erythropolis, A. ferrooxidans, P. mirabilis, T. flavus, etc.) demonstrated the... [more]

State of Health Estimation of Lithium-Ion Battery Based on Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, lithium iron battery, state of health, support vector regression
Energy storage is an important technical means to increase the consumption of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Electrochemical energy storage, represented by lithium-ion batteries, has a promising developmental prospect. The performance of lithium-ion batteries continues to decline in the process of application, and the differences between batteries are increasing. Therefore, accurate estimation of the state of health (SOH) of batteries is the key to the safe and efficient operation of energy storage systems. In this paper, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) characteristics of Li-ion batteries under different states of charge and health were studied. Three groups of Li-ion battery impedance module values under different frequencies were selected as characteristic parameters, and the SOH estimation model of Li-ion batteries was built by using the support vector regression (SVR) algorithm. The results show that: the model with the second group of freque... [more]

Identification of Optimal Binders for Torrefied Biomass Pellets
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: binders, densification, lignin, pellets, thermally treated biomass fuels, torrefaction, torrefied biomass
The pretreatment of biomass through torrefaction is an effective means of improving the fuel quality of woody biomass and its suitability for use in existing facilities burning thermal coal. Densification of torrefied biomass produces a fuel of similar energy density, moisture content, and fixed carbon content to low-grade coals. Additionally, if the torrefaction conditions are optimized, the produced torrefied pellet will be resistant to weathering and biological degradation, allowing for outdoor storage and transport in a manner similar to coal. In untreated biomass, lignin is the primary binding agent for biomass pellets and is activated by the heat and pressures of the pellet extrusion process. The thermal degradation of lignin during torrefaction reduces its binding ability, resulting in pellets of low durability not suitable for transportation. The use of a binding agent can increase the durability of torrefied pellets/briquettes through a number of different binding mechanisms d... [more]

Performance Analysis of Overcurrent Protection under Corrupted Sampled Value Frames: A Hardware-in-the-Loop Approach
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: A/D error, hardware in the loop, IEC 61850 standard, lost frame, overcurrent protection, packet delay, packet lost, sampled values
The IEC 61850 standard aims at digitization substations and provides interoperability between various Intelligent Electronic Device vendors. The digitization process is accompanied by several challenges related to data transmission on the ethernet network and the protection behavior under these conditions. Among the challenges, we can mention packet loss, delay, and duplicate frame, which occurs when the merging units (publisher) transmit the sampled values and, for some reason, these packets do not reach the subscriber or are duplicated. Nowadays, most Intelligent Electronic Device manufacturers block the protection function when some sampled value packets are corrupted. The effects of blocking protection when packet loss occurs under normal operating conditions do not cause significant problems. However, when a fault occurs, the corrupted packets can cause a delay in fault clearance, causing even more damage to the grid. The purpose of this article is to present the effects of corrup... High-Quality Syngas Production by Chemical Looping Gasification of Bituminite Based on NiFe2O4 Oxygen Carrier
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkali metal, bituminite, chemical looping gasification (CLG), NiFe2O4, oxygen carrier, Syngas
Chemical looping gasification (CLG) is an effective coal utilization technology. In this work, the CLG of bituminite was investigated through fixed-bed batch experiments using NiFe2O4 oxygen carrier (OC) to achieve high-quality syngas. The changes in the phase of the oxygen carrier during the chemical looping reaction and the reaction mechanism were explored. The results show that elevated temperature and adding a fraction of steam facilitate the gasification reaction. Adding an appropriate amount of ZrO2 into the NiFe2O4 and modification with alkali metal can enhance the performance of the oxygen carrier. A carbon conversion of 95% and a syngas (CO and H2) selectivity of 86% were obtained under the optimized reaction conditions of 950 °C, an oxygen-carrier-to-bituminite (O/B) ratio of 7:3, a NiFe2O4/ZrO2 ratio of 7:3, and a steam rate of 0.08 mL/min. Modification of the NiFe2O4 by doping alkali metal can significantly facilitate the CLG process. Alkali lignin ash has a more pronounced... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: decarbonisation, net zero steelmaking, Poland, scenarios, steel industry
The European steel industry is experiencing new challenges related to the market situation and climate policy. Experience from the period of pandemic restrictions and the effects of Russia’s armed invasion of Ukraine has given many countries a basis for including steel along with raw materials (coke, iron ore, electricity) in economic security products (CRMA). Steel is needed for economic infrastructure and construction development as well as a material for other industries (without steel, factories will not produce cars, machinery, ships, washing machines, etc.). In 2022, steelmakers faced a deepening energy crisis and economic slowdown. The market situation prompted steelmakers to impose restrictions on production volumes (worldwide production fell by 4% compared to the previous year). Despite the difficult economic situation of the steel industry (production in EU countries fell by 11% in 2022 compared to the previous year), the EU is strengthening its industrial decarbonisation pol... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: off-design conditions, organic Rankine cycle, radial turbine, three-dimensional analysis, turbine design
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is an efficient technology for electricity generation from low- and medium-temperature heat sources. In this type of power cycle, the radial inflow turbine is the option usually selected for electricity generation. As a critical ORC component, turbine performance markedly affects the efficiency of the system. Therefore, the challenge is to model the behavior of the radial inflow turbine operating with organic fluids for heat recovery applications. In this context, various groups of fluids are highlighted in the scientific literature, including R-123, R-245fa, and R-141b, which are the fluids used in this research. Since little research has focused on the turbine efficiency effect on the power cycle design and analysis, this study presents an analysis of a radial inflow turbine based on a mathematical model of a one-dimensional design of the turbine. From this analysis, geometric, thermal, and operating parameters were determined, as well as volute, stato... [more]

Enhancement of Microgrid Frequency Stability Based on the Combined Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power Technology under High Penetration Renewable Units
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: power-to-hydrogen-to-power, renewable energy sources, superconducting magnetic energy storage, virtual inertia control
Recently, with the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources into microgrid (μGs) power electronics, distributed energy systems have gained popularity. However, low inertia reduces system frequency stability and anti-disturbance capabilities, exposing power quality to intermittency and uncertainty in photovoltaics or wind turbines. To ensure system stability, the virtual inertia control (VIC) is presented. This paper proposes two solutions to overcome the low inertia problem and the surplus in capacities resulting from renewable energy sources. The first solution employs superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), which can be deemed as an efficient solution for damping the frequency oscillations. Therefore, in this work, SMES that is managed by a simple proportional-integral-derivative controller (PID) controller is utilized to overcome the low inertia. In the second solution, the hydrogen storage system is employed to maintain the stability of the microgrid by storing s... [more]
