Dynamic Approach to Evaluate the Effect of Reducing District Heating Temperature on Indoor Thermal Comfort
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic model, energy performance of buildings, indoor comfort, low temperature district heating, renovation, urban scale
To reduce energy consumption for space heating, a coordinated action on energy supply, building fabric and occupant behavior is required to realize sustainable improvements. A reduction in district heating supply temperature is an interesting option to allow the incorporation of renewable energy sources and reduce distribution losses, but its impact on the final users must be considered. This aspect is especially critical as most European countries feature an old building stock, with poor insulation and heating systems designed for high-temperature operation. In this study, a complete methodology is devised to evaluate the effect of district heating temperature reduction on the end users by modeling all the stages of the system, from the primary heat exchanger to the indoor environment. A dynamic energy performance engine, based on EN ISO 52016-1:2017 standard and completed with a heat exchanger model, is implemented, and its outputs are used to calculate thermal comfort indicators thr... Cyber-Security of Smart Microgrids: A Survey
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cyber-attacks, cyber-security, cyber–physical system, power electronics converters, smart microgrids
In this paper, the cyber-security of smart microgrids is thoroughly discussed. In smart grids, the cyber system and physical process are tightly coupled. Due to the cyber system’s vulnerabilities, any cyber incidents can have economic and physical impacts on their operations. In power electronics-intensive smart microgrids, cyber-attacks can have much more harmful and devastating effects on their operation and stability due to low inertia, especially in islanded operation. In this paper, the cyber−physical systems in smart microgrids are briefly studied. Then, the cyber-attacks on data availability, integrity, and confidentiality are discussed. Since a false data injection (FDI) attack that compromises the data integrity in the cyber/communication network is one of the most challenging threats for smart microgrids, it is investigated in detail in this paper. Such FDI attacks can target state estimation, voltage and frequency control, and smart microgrids’ protection systems. The econom... [more]

Investigation of Turbulence Modeling for Point-Absorber-Type Wave Energy Converters
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, RANS, turbulence modeling, Wave Energy
Reviewing the literature of CFD-based numerical wave tanks for wave energy applications, it can be observed that different flow conditions and different turbulence models are applied during numerical wave energy converter (WEC) experiments. No single turbulence model can be identified as an `industry standard’ for WEC modeling. The complexity of the flow field around a WEC, together with the strong dependency of turbulence effects on the shape, operational conditions, and external forces, hampers the formulation of such an `industry standard’. Furthermore, the conceptually different flow characteristics (i.e., oscillating, free surface flows), compared to the design cases of most turbulence models (i.e., continuous single-phase flow), can be identified as a source for the potential lack of accuracy of turbulence models for WEC applications. This communication performs a first step towards analyzing the accuracy and necessity of modeling turbulence effects, by means of turbulence models... [more]

Numerical Simulations of DDT Limits in Hydrogen-Air Mixtures in Obstacle Laden Channel
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DDT, DDT limits, ddtFoam, hydrogen-air, obstacle laden tube
The main aim of this study was to perform numerical simulations of deflagration to detonation transition process (DDT) in hydrogen−air mixtures and assess the capabilities of freeware open-source ddtFoam code to simulate and capture DDT limits. The numerical geometry was based on the real 0.08 × 0.11 × 4 m (H × W × L), rectangular cross-section detonation channel previously used to experimentally investigate DDT limits in obstacle-filled channel. The constant blockage ratio (BR) equal to 0.5 was kept for three obstacle spacing configurations: S = H, 2H, 3H. The results showed that hydrogen concentration limits for successful DDT from simulations are close to the experimental values, however, the simulated DDT limits range is wider than the experimental one and depends on the obstacles spacing. The numerical results were analyzed by means of propagation velocities, overpressures, and run-up distances. The best match between numerical and experimental DDT limits was observed for obstacle... Distributed Computational Framework for Large-Scale Stochastic Convex Optimization
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: decentralized scenario program, distributed computation, distributed scenario program, distributed stochastic systems, plug-and-play framework, scenario convex program, Stochastic Optimization
This paper presents a distributed computational framework for stochastic convex optimization problems using the so-called scenario approach. Such a problem arises, for example, in a large-scale network of interconnected linear systems with local and common uncertainties. Due to the large number of required scenarios to approximate the stochasticity of these problems, the stochastic optimization involves formulating a large-scale scenario program, which is in general computationally demanding. We present two novel ideas in this paper to address this issue. We first develop a technique to decompose the large-scale scenario program into distributed scenario programs that exchange a certain number of scenarios with each other to compute local decisions using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We show the exactness of the decomposition with a-priori probabilistic guarantees for the desired level of constraint fulfillment for both local and common uncertainty sources. As... [more]

Multi-Scale Microfluidics for Transport in Shale Fabric
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: fracture network, micromodel, transport
We develop a microfluidic experimental platform to study solute transport in multi-scale fracture networks with a disparity of spatial scales ranging between two and five orders of magnitude. Using the experimental scaling relationship observed in Marcellus shales between fracture aperture and frequency, the microfluidic design of the fracture network spans all length scales from the micron (1 μ) to the dm (10 dm). This intentional `tyranny of scales’ in the design, a determining feature of shale fabric, introduces unique complexities during microchip fabrication, microfluidic flow-through experiments, imaging, data acquisition and interpretation. Here, we establish best practices to achieve a reliable experimental protocol, critical for reproducible studies involving multi-scale physical micromodels spanning from the Darcy- to the pore-scale (dm to μm). With this protocol, two fracture networks are created: a macrofracture network with fracture apertures between 5 and 500 μm and a mic... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: convenience, environmental aspects, knowledge, LOHAS, stereotype
The current paper analyzes the awareness of renewable energy sources (RES), the relationship between self-reported and actual knowledge, and the correlation among the knowledge of renewable energy sources, the characteristic stereotypes, and the typical attitude of different social groups to energy, comparing them with international experience. A nationwide representative questionnaire-based survey was carried out involving 1002 people in Hungary in 2019. Better education, a higher income, an active white-collar profession, and a health- and environment-conscious approach to life (LOHAS (lifestyle of health and sustainability) segment) are definitely an advantage when it comes to knowledge of renewable energy sources. No significant relationship was detected in terms of age; however, in cluster formation, young people were typically found to be better informed. Overall, the actual knowledge of the Hungarian respondents is more favorable than the self-reported one, and the basic level o... [more]

NOx Reduction in Ag/Al2O3-SiO2 Converters in the Exhaust of a Compression-Ignition Engine
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression-ignition engine, engine exhaust after-treatment, NOx reduction, silver
NOx emissions in compression-ignition engines can be reduced, either through the application of engine-internal methods, i.e., making sure that as little NOx as possible is produced as a result of the mixture combustion processes, or through the use of catalytic converters designed to reduce nitrogen oxides, including NH3-SCR or HC-SCR converters. Converters using ammonia offer high conversion rates, but they tend to be problematic in terms of their operation. For this reason, converters using hydrocarbons for the purpose of NOx reduction have been gaining in popularity. An Ag/Al2O3-SiO2 converter is an example of such a catalytic converter. This paper describes the process of preparing such a converter and characterises the porosity and acidity of its surface. The dispersion of silver was assessed based on oxygen absorption tests on crystallites of sliver and based on TEM images of crystallites of silver. The conversion of NO2, NO and propane was assessed depending on the temperature.... [more]

Impact of Trade and Financial Globalization on Renewable Energy in EU Transition Economies: A Bootstrap Panel Granger Causality Test
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bootstrap panel Granger causality, CO2 emissions, EU transition economies, financial globalization, real GDP per capita, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, trade globalization
The globalized world has experienced significant environmental degradation together with raising global production and population. In this context, the employment of renewable energy use has become crucial for a sustainable environment and development. In the research, the mutual causality among renewable energy, trade and financial globalization, real GDP per capita, and CO2 emissions in EU transition economies experiencing the integration with global economy was explored through bootstrap panel Granger causality test for the period of 1995−2015. The causality analysis revealed a unilateral causality from trade globalization to renewable energy in Estonia, Latvia, and Slovenia, and from renewable energy to trade globalization in Croatia and Lithuania. However, no significant causality between financial globalization and renewable energy was revealed. On the other side, a unilateral causality from CO2 emissions to renewable energy in Lithuania and Slovenia, and from renewable energy to... [more]

Decentralized Control Strategy for an AC Co-Phase Traction Microgrid
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: circulation current, co-phased traction system, microgrid, secondary control
High speed and heavy loads have become more prevalent in the traction power supply system recently. To ensure system operating stability, better power quality, and sufficient power capacity, improvements are needed over the conventional traction system. Inspired by the concept of a microgrid (MG), an AC co-phase traction MG system was proposed. Substations were connected to the traction grid as distributed generators operate in islanded mode. Droop control was adopted as the primary control to stabilize the system’s operating frequency and voltage. Considering the operating features of the substation and locomotive load, a de-centralized secondary control strategy was proposed for AC co-phase traction MG system operation with enhanced resiliency. The proposed control strategy could increase system stability and prevent circulation currents between substations. Moreover, the proposed de-centralized coordination between substations does not rely on communication, which promotes the syste... [more]

The North Caucasus Region as a Blind Spot in the “European Green Deal”: Energy Supply Security and Energy Superpower Russia
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clean energies, energy markets, energy studies, global economics and cross-cultural management, Natural Gas, North Caucasus, oil, post-soviet conflicts, renewable energies, Russia
The “European Green Deal” has ambitious aims, such as net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. While the European Union aims to make its energies greener, Russia pursues power-goals based on its status as a geo-energy superpower. A successful “European Green Deal” would have the up-to-now underestimated geopolitical advantage of making the European Union less dependent on Russian hydrocarbons. In this article, we illustrate Russian power-politics and its geopolitical implications by analyzing the illustrative case of the North Caucasus, which has been traditionally a strategic region for Russia. The present article describes and analyses the impact of Russian intervention in the North Caucasian secessionist conflict since 1991 and its importance in terms of natural resources, especially hydrocarbons. The geopolitical power secured by Russia in the North Caucasian conflict has important implications for European Union’s energy supply security and could be regarded as a strong argument... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorption isotherms, alkali treatment, bioadsorbent, biodiesel purification, olive cake
Mediterranean countries produce up to 97% of the total global olive production. Besides being a serious environmental burden, olive mill waste represents a potential resource of useful materials for recovery and valorization. In this work, the adsorption characteristics and potential of bioadsorbent material manufactured by alkali treatment of olive cake was evaluated. The resultant bioadsorbent was able to purify biodiesel to meets both ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards. Further, the sorption equilibrium was investigated at 25 °C. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherms fit to the experimental data were evaluated by applying the non-linear Chi-square test. Freundlich and Temkin isotherms were shown to adequately described the adsorption isotherms of the produced bioadsorbent.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ash fusion, coal ash, fly ash, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics
Both molecular dynamics (MD) and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations were performed to simulate coal ashes using the Guillot-Sator model in this work. The structural and transport properties of coal ashes at high temperatures have been obtained. Superheating of coal ash system with anorthite crystal structure initial configuration has been observed for MD simulation which explains the discrepancy between previous MD simulation results and FactSage thermochemical calculations. The fluxing effects of both calcium oxide and sodium oxide have been investigated systematically through MD and NEMD simulations. Moreover, the viscosities of coal ash systems have been computed by two methods: (1) Stokes-Einstein equation; (2) NEMD simulations. Estimations of viscosities for various coal ash systems based on Stokes-Einstein equation exhibit a strong temperature dependence of viscosity, which agrees with previous experimental results. CSP Quasi-Dynamic Performance Model Development for All Project Life Cycle Stages and Considering Operation Modes. Validation Using One Year Data
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CSP, parabolic trough, performance model, plant data validation, power block, quasi dynamic, Simulation, transient modelling
The energy production of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants not only depends on their design, but also of the weather conditions and the way they are operated. A performance model (PM) of a CSP plant is an essential tool to determine production costs, to optimize design and also to supervise the operation of the plant. The challenge is developing a PM that is both easy enough to be useful during the earlier stages of the project, and also useful for supervision of plant operation. This requires one to be able to describe the step between the different modes of operation and to fit the response to transient meteorological phenomena, not so relevant in terms of aggregate values, but crucial for the supervision. The quasi-dynamic performance model (QD-PM) can predict the net energy exported to the grid, as well as all the key operational variables. The QD-PM was implemented using Matlab-Simulink of Mathwoks (MA, USA) with a modular structure. Each module is developed using specific sof... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: anomaly detection, deep learning, fault detection and diagnosis, long short-term memory (LSTM) network, normal pattern group, three-shaft marine gas turbine
Fault detection and diagnosis can improve safety and reliability of gas turbines. Current studies on gas turbine fault detection and diagnosis mainly focus on the case of abundant fault samples. However, fault data are rare or even unavailable for gas turbines, especially newly-run gas turbines. Aiming to realize fault detection with only normal data, this paper proposes the concept of normal pattern group. A group of long-short term memory (LSTM) networks are first used for characterizing the mapping relationships among measurable parameters of healthy three-shaft gas turbines. Experiments show that the proposed method can detect all 13 common gas path faults of three-shaft gas turbines sensitively while remaining low false alarm rate. Comparison experiment with single normal pattern model verifies the necessaries and superiorities of using normal pattern group. April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-oil, biochar, complex mixtures, FTICR MS, pyrolysis
Bio-oils from biomass pyrolysis can be a resource for upgrading to chemicals or fuels. Here, for the first time, we compare the composition of bio-oils produced from two feedstocks (wheat straw, softwood) in pyrolysis units of different mode of operation (continuous—rotary kiln vs. batch) using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) in different ionization modes (APPI (+), ESI (+/−)). Our results demonstrate that the pyrolysis unit design had only a minor influence on the composition of bio-oils produced from low-mineral containing wood biomass. Yet, the wheat straw-derived bio-oil produced in the continuous unit comprised lower molecular weight compounds with fewer oxygen-containing functional groups and lower O/C and H/C ratios, compared to bio-oils from batch pyrolysis. Longer residence time of vapours in the heated zone in the rotary kiln and a higher mineral content in wheat straw resulted in increased catalytically-mediated secondary reactions that... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: co-simulation, D models, distributed energy resources, integrated T&, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, smart grid
Integrated transmission-and-distribution (T&D) modeling is a new and developing method for simulating power systems. Interest in integrated T&D modeling is driven by the changes taking place in power systems worldwide that are resulting in more decentralized power systems with increasingly high levels of distributed energy resources. Additionally, the increasing role of the hitherto passive energy consumer in the management and operation of power systems requires more capable and detailed integrated T&D modeling to understand the interactions between T&D systems. Although integrated T&D modeling has not yet found widespread commercial application, its potential for changing the decades-old power system modeling approaches has led to several research efforts in the last few years that tried to (i) develop algorithms and software for steady-state and dynamic modeling of power systems and (ii) demonstrate the advantages of this modeling approach compared with traditional, separated T&D sy... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: heat recovery, heat recovery system, heat recovery wheel, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), local Nusselt number, regenerator, rotary heat exchanger, temperature effectiveness, thermal efficiency, thermal wheel
In the last 50 years, the technology of rotary heat exchangers has not changed considerably. A reliable simulation can help improve the design of this technology. In this work, a simulation for rotary heat exchangers was developed and validated with multiple experimental data. This simulation takes an innovative approach based on locally calculated heat transfer coefficients and considers the entry region effect. This approach proved to be accurate since the average difference between the experimental results and the proposed model with a constant heat boundary condition is 0.1% and the maximum absolute deviation 1%. Experimental, as well as simulation results, indicate that lower empty tube gas velocity (1 m/s) and higher rotational speed (12 rpm) improve thermal efficiency compared to commonly used operating conditions. Additionally, a new model for predicting the local internal Nusselt number for sine ducts in the rotor channels is proposed, which considers the entry region effect.

Expenditure-Based Indicators of Energy Poverty—An Analysis of Income and Expenditure Elasticities

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy poverty, European Union, household budget survey, indicators, micro data, sensitivity analysis
Energy poverty is high up on national and European Union policy agendas. A number of possible indicators to measure the issue have been identified in the literature, but comparable data with European coverage is scarce. The EU Commission thus proposes four independent indicators on the “EU Energy Poverty Observatory” based on self-reported items from the pan-European surveys on income and living conditions (SILC) and household budgets (HBS). It is of increasing public interest to analyse social impacts of energy policies, and quantify energy poverty indicators also from modelling. This paper first shortly outlines how the expenditure-based indicators using HBS micro data may be directly linked to existing macroeconomic models through their defining variables (energy expenditure and income). As endogenous modelling based on micro data is difficult, the link may be country-specific elasticities. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy commodities, forecasting, futures contracts, GARCH models, Machine Learning, support vector regression, volatility
We compare the forecasting performance of the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH) -type models with support vector regression (SVR) for futures contracts of selected energy commodities: Crude oil, natural gas, heating oil, gasoil and gasoline. The GARCH models are commonly used in volatility analysis, while SVR is one of machine learning methods, which have gained attention and interest in recent years. We show that the accuracy of volatility forecasts depends substantially on the applied proxy of volatility. Our study confirms that SVR with properly determined hyperparameters can lead to lower forecasting errors than the GARCH models when the squared daily return is used as the proxy of volatility in an evaluation. Meanwhile, if we apply the Parkinson estimator which is a more accurate approximation of volatility, the results usually favor the GARCH models. Moreover, it is difficult to choose the best model among the GARCH models for all analyzed commodit... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air circulators, ceiling radiant cooling panel, cooling capacity, cooling energy consumption, open-type installation
Ceiling radiant cooling panel (CRCP) systems are being increasingly applied to commercial buildings due to their high thermal comfort level and energy efficiency. It is recommended that CRCP systems should be operated at a relatively high chilled water temperature to prevent condensation and save energy. However, even though a high chilled water temperature is effective for achieving condensation-free operation and high chiller efficiency, it can lead to insufficient cooling capacity. In this study, a method of enhancing the cooling capacity of CRCP systems was investigated through mock-up chamber tests. The open-type installation of CRCPs and the combination of air circulators were used to enhance the cooling capacity and energy performance of CRCP systems. Experimental results showed that compared to a conventional CRCP system, the cooling capacity of an open-type CRCP system with air circulators increased by up to 26.2%, and its cooling energy consumption decreased by up to 26.4%.
