Optimization of Fracture Spacing and Well Spacing in Utica Shale Play Using Fast Analytical Flow-Cell Model (FCM) Calibrated with Numerical Reservoir Simulator
Ruud Weijermars
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cluster spacing optimization, estimated ultimate recovery, flow-cell model, fracture treatment design, numerical reservoir simulator, parent and child wells, reserves estimation, Utica shale play, well spacing
Recently, a flow-cell model (FCM) was specifically developed to quickly generate physics-based forecasts of production rates and estimated ultimate resources (EURs) for infill wells, as the basis for the estimation of proven undeveloped reserves. Such reserves estimations provide operators with key collateral for further field development with reserves-based loans. FCM has been verified in previous studies to accurately forecast production rates and EURs for both black oil and dry gas wells. This study aims to expand the application range of FCM to predict the production performance and EURs of wells planned in undeveloped acreage of the wet gas window. Forecasts of the well rates and EURs with FCM are compared with the performance predictions generated with an integrated reservoir simulator for multi-fractured wells, using detailed field data from the Utica Field Experiment. Results of FCM, with adjustment factors to account for wet gas compressibility effects, match closely with the... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ball mills, DEM model, Energy Efficiency, internal dynamics, measurements, resonance oscillations
Tumbling mills have been widely implemented in many industrial sectors for the grinding of bulk materials. They have been used for decades in the production of fines and in the final stages of ore comminution, where optimal levels for the enrichment particles’ sizes are obtained. Even though these ubiquitous machines of relatively simple construction have been subjected to extensive studies, the industry still struggles with very low energy efficiency of the comminution process. Moreover, obtaining an optimal size for the grinding product particles is crucial for the effectiveness of the following processes and waste production reduction. New, innovative processing methods and machines are being developed to tackle the problem; however, tumbling mills are still most commonly used in all ranges of the industry. Since heavy equipment retrofitting is the most costly approach, process optimization with dedicated models and control systems is the most preferable solution for energy consumpt... [more]
Improvement of Strength Parameters of Cement Matrix with the Addition of Siliceous Fly Ash by Using Nanometric C-S-H Seeds

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: C-S-H seed, cement matrix, compressive strength, concrete strength at early ages, hydration heat, nanoadmixture (NA), siliceous fly ash (FA), tensile strength
Modification of a cement matrix using additives and admixtures has been a common practice for many years. The use of some mineral additives as substitutes for the cement, e.g., the siliceous fly ashes (FAs), has a positive effect on reducing the energy used in cement production. On the other hand, such activities may have negative effects due to the lowering of strength parameters of composites in early stages of curing. In order to solve this problem, over the last few years, thanks to the patented "seedings" technology, a branch of industry connected with the production of admixtures that accelerate the binding process has developed significantly. Therefore, the paper presents the results of research aimed at analyzing the parameters of FA cement matrix with the nanoadmixture containing the nanometric C-S-H seeds (nanoadmixture (NA)). By using the modern NA, an attempt was made to neutralize the negative influence of the used industrial waste on the structure of the cement matrix in... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automotive, battery charger, circuit modelling, power electronics, SiC MOSFET
In this paper, a procedure to simulate an electronic power converter for control design and optimization purposes is proposed. For the addressed application, the converter uses SiC-MOSFET technology in bidirectional battery chargers composed of two power stages. The first stage consists of a single-phase AC/DC power factor correction synchronous rectifier. The following stage is a DC/DC dual active bridge. The converter has been modulated using a phase-shift technique which is able to manage bidirectional power flows. The development of a model-based simulation approach is essential to simplify the different design phases. Moreover, it is also important for the final validation of the control algorithm. A suitable tool consisting of a system-level simulation environment has been adopted. The tool is based on a block diagram design method accomplished using the Simulink toolbox in MATLAB™.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid leaching, battery recycling, Li-ion batteries, metal recovery, raw material sustainable use
Lithium-ion batteries are currently one of the most important mobile energy storage units for portable electronics such as laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc. Their widespread application leads to the generation of large amounts of waste, so their recycling plays an important role in environmental policy. In this work, the process of leaching with sulfuric acid for the recovery of metals from spent Li-ion batteries in the presence of glutaric acid and hydrogen peroxide as reducing agents is presented. Experimental results indicate that glutaric-acid application improves the leaching performance compared to the use of just hydrogen peroxide under the same conditions. Obtained samples of leaching residues after mixed inorganic-organic leaching were characterized with Scanning Electron Microscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction.

Keywords: Baltic States, current status, historic nonpowered sites, micro-hydro, potential, protected areas, small hydropower
Small hydropower (SHP) plays an important role in the Baltic States as a reliable and efficient source of electricity from renewable sources. This study presents the historical development, current status, and possible trends for the future development of SHP in the Baltic States with insights into the legal background and development policies for SHP in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. For the assessment of hydraulic structures in the Baltic States, the historical data was used supplemented with data from hydropower associations, the national departments of statistics, electricity transmission systems operators, etc. The currently recommended best practice for SHP development is the utilisation of existing sites with available infrastructure. These include old water mill sites and existing dam sites, which, in the Baltic States, number more than 1500. The majority of these sites have their power potential attributed to micro-hydro (<100 kW). In this study the potential of the hydropo... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CsPbBr3 NCs, polymer nanocomposites, recombination dynamics, steady state emission, time resolved spectra
Metal halide perovskites nanocrystals (NCs) represent an emerging class of materials that find increasing application in optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices, thanks to their intriguing optical properties, including high absorption coefficient, high fluorescence quantum yield (PL QY) and fast charge carrier separation. However, their opening to market is still hindered by their limited reliability, due to an intrinsic structural instability and degradation of their photophysical properties upon air, moisture, and light exposure. The incorporation of perovskite NCs in polymer matrix can limit some of the NC instability issues, with advantages in film processability, device fabrication and mechanical performance, being also useful for fundamental studies. In this regard, here, nanocomposites based on polymethylmethacrylate or polystyrene embedding all-inorganic CsPbBr3 NCs have been prepared and processed in the form of flexible free-standing films. Yang Chen, Yao Zhang, Jianxue Wang, Zelong Lu
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ADMM, district heating network, integrated energy system, power distribution network
As the need for clean energy increases, massive distributed energy resources are deployed, strengthening the interdependence of multi-carrier energy systems. This has raised concerns on the electricity-heat system’s co-operation for lower operation costs, higher energy efficiency, and higher flexibility. This paper discusses the co-operation of integrated electricity−heat system. In the proposed model, network constraints in both systems are considered to guarantee system operations’ security: the branch flow model is utilized to describe the electricity network, while a convexified model considering variable mass flow and temperature dynamics is adopted to describe the heat network. Additionally, novel models for heat pumps and the stratified water tank are proposed to represent the physical system more accurately. Finally, to preserve the information privacy of separate systems, a distributed algorithm is proposed based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Numer... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Archimedes turbine, energy yield, Kaplan turbine, minimum head, small-scale hydropower
In Poland, existing barrages are characterized by relatively high flow and low head, which is challenging for the effective utilization of theoretical watercourse power. The paper presents the impact of the minimum head of the hydro sets on the annual electricity production of small hydropower plants at low-head locations for two types of water turbines: Archimedes and Kaplan turbines. A developed mathematical model was used to simulate energy yield from Archimedes and Kaplan turbines for a given value of the minimum technical head, depending on the number of installed hydro sets. For economic analysis purposes, the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and net present value (NPV) indicators were calculated. The conducted research allowed for comparing Archimedes and Kaplan’s turbine operating conditions and how the minimum head parameter influences their electricity production and utilization time. As concluded in the results, the influence of minimum head in energy production is more... [more]

Keywords: air leakage, airtightness, blower door test, built heritage, Energy Efficiency, historic buildings
Airtightness is a major issue in architectural design and it has a significant impact on the energy performance of buildings. Moreover, the energy behaviour of built heritage is due, to its singular characteristics, still a great unknown. The aim of this study is to establish a better knowledge of the airtightness of historical buildings, based on an in depth field study using blower-door tests. A set of 37 enclosures were analyzed inside eight buildings located in historical areas of a Spanish city with a significant built heritage. They were constructed between 1882 and 1919 and include diverse construction typologies applied for many building uses such as residential, cultural, educational, administrative and emblematic. The results indicate lower values compared to other previous airtightness studies of historical buildings. The average air change rate was found to be n50 = 9.03 h−1 and the airtightness of the enclosures presented a wide range of between 0.68 and 37.12 h−1. Three m... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dropwise condensation, ethanol-water mixture vapors, heat transfer, Marangoni condensation, model
In this paper, a model was developed to predict the heat transfer characteristics of Marangoni dropwise condensation. In accordance with the feature of Marangoni condensation, condensation was treated as dropwise condensation of mixture vapors. The condensation space was divided into two parts: the vapor diffusion layer and the condensate layer. For the condensate layer, the classical heat transfer calculation method of dropwise condensation was imitated to obtain the heat transfer characteristics. For the vapor diffusion layer, the heat transfer characteristics were achieved by solving the conservation equations. These heat transfer characteristics were coupled through the conjunct boundary, which was the vapor-liquid interface. The model was applied to the condensation of water-ethanol mixture vapors. A comparison with the existing experimental data showed that the developed model could basically reflect the influences of vapor-to-surface temperature difference, vapor concentration,... [more]

Keywords: heat storage, heat transfer, rock bed storage, rock shape, sensible heat
The article presents the problem of modelling the charging of a constant-phase bed storage in the first hours of the process. The places of errors in the heat transfer calculations for the packed beds were indicated. Granite in the shape of spheres and crushed rocks, with a characteristic dimension of 50 mm, was used for the experimental tests. The material was subjected to tomographic examination and then used as a storage material. The charging process was carried out for three flow rates: 0.006, 0.008 and 0.010 m3/s. After three hours of testing, the temperature of the outlet air for the granite sphere as the storage material was the same as for the granite crushed rock. However, the biggest differences occurred after 1 h of charging. They were equal to: 40.4% for the flow rate of 0.006 m3/s, 22.0% for the flow rate of 0.008 m3/s, and 18.5% for the flow rate of 0.010 m3/s. The differences were greater than the uncertainty of the measurements. As a result, different temperatures of t... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3-point bending test, composite insulator, DC high voltage, glass-reinforced epoxy core, mechanical strength, micro-hardness
In this article, we presented the results of the tests performed on three sets of samples of glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) core rods used in alternating current (AC) composite insulators with silicone rubber housing. The objective of this examination was to test the aging resistance of the rod material when exposed to direct current (DC) high voltage. We hypothesized that the long-term effects of the electrostatic field on the GRE core rod material would lead to a gradual degradation of its mechanical properties caused by ionic current flow. Further, we hypothesized that reducing the mechanical strength of the GRE core rod would lead to the breakage of the insulator. The first group of samples was used for reference. The samples from the second group were subjected to a temperature of about 50 °C for 6000 h. The third group of samples were aged by temperature and DC high voltage for the same time. The samples were examined using the 3-point bending test, micro-hardness measurement and m... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamics, cell-set model, flow control, microtab, wind turbine
Microtabs (MTs) are a regularly used flow control device in terms of wind turbine optimization. The present study introduces the application of the novel cell-set model for an MT implementation on a DU91W(2)250 airfoil. The cell-set model is based on the reusability of a mesh to add new geometries on the domain; the matching geometry is located where the user requires, and a set of cells is constructed around the mentioned geometry. Subsequently, wall boundaries are assigned to the generated region. Computational simulations were carried out for fully mesh and cell-set models: MT lengths were set at 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% of the airfoil chord length (c) and the MTs were placed at 93% and 95% of c from the leading edge of the airfoil. Resulting data showed that the MT behavior was similar for both models with regard to aerodynamic performance curve representations. A global relative error of 3.784% was obtained for the cell-set model and a maximum relative error of 7.332% was determined. Q... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: concentrated winding motor, eddy current loss, heat generation, magnetic circuit, magnetic composite material, spatial harmonics
The demand for high-speed servomotors is increasing, and minimal losses in both high-speed and high-torque regions are required. Copper loss reduction in permanent magnet motors can be achieved by configuring concentrated winding, but there are more spatial harmonics compared with distributed winding. At high-speed rotation, the eddy current loss of the rotor increases, and efficiency tends to decrease. Therefore, we propose a motor in which a composite ring made from resin material mixed with magnetic powder is mounted on the stator to suppress spatial harmonics. This paper describes three characteristic motor types, namely, open-slot motors, composite-ring motors, and closed-slot motors. Spatial harmonics are reduced significantly in composite-ring motors, and rotor eddy current loss is reduced by more than 50% compared with open-slot motors. Thermal analysis suggests that the saturation temperature rise value is reduced by more than 30 K. The use of a composite ring is effective in... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost converter, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), photovoltaic (PV), single-diode PV cell model, time-varying solar irradiation
Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is one of the most viable renewable energy sources, considered less polluting than fossil energy. However, the average power conversion efficiency of PV systems is between 15% and 20%, and they must operate with high efficiency. Photovoltaic cells have non-linear voltage−current characteristics that are dependent on environmental factors such as solar irradiation and temperature, and have low efficiency. Therefore, it becomes crucial to harvest the maximum power from PV panels. This paper aims to study and analyze the most common and well-known maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (IncCond). These algorithms were found to be easy to implement, low-cost techniques suitable for large- and medium-sized photovoltaic applications. The algorithms were tested and compared dynamically using MATLAB/Simulink software. In order to overcome the low performance of the P&O and IncCond methods under time-v... [more]

Keywords: energy storage units, fuzzy logic, Genetic Algorithm, low-voltage grid analysis
This paper refers to the issue that mainly appears in distribution grids, where renewable energy sources (RES) are widely installed. In such grids, one of the main problems is the coordination of energy production time with demand time, especially if photovoltaic energy sources are present. To face this problem, battery energy storage units (ESU) can be installed. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to optimizing the use of ESU. This paper contains a simple description of available solutions for the application of ESU as well as an original proposal for selecting the optimal location and control of ESU. The ESU selection method is based on the use of a genetic algorithm and the ESU control method utilizes the fuzzy logic. The combination of the aforementioned methods/algorithms of ESU application is named an integrated algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated by multivariate computer simulations with the use of the real low-voltage grid mode... [more]

Manoel Henriques de Sá Campos, Chigueru Tiba
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cloud cover, cloud segmentation, GHI measurement, irradiance modeling with a sky camera
Ground images with a sky camera have become common to evaluate cloud coverage, aerosols, and energy collection. In parallel, the growth of solar energy has led to an impulse to evaluate and forecast the solar potential in a site before investments, which has increased the importance of solar power measurements. Facing that scenario, this work presents a novel sky camera model that allows to measure the global horizontal irradiance (GHI). Initially, images from a fisheye camera were stored and a pixel-based approach model was created for cloud segmentation. A total of 813 k vectors of features were used as input to the support vector machine for classification (SVC), which yielded a success rate of about 98.6% in accuracy. The Sun’s position was also segmented and an artificial neural network (ANN) regression model for GHI with 17 input features was created based on segmentation of the Sun, clouds, and sky. The training/validation stage of the ANN used 89,964 samples and the test stage... [more]

Keywords: bentonite drilling fluids, drilling fluids, iron oxide, KCl, nanoparticles
In recent years, several studies have indicated the impact of nanoparticles (NPs) on various properties (such as viscosity and fluid loss) of conventional drilling fluids. Our previous study with commercial iron oxide NPs indicated the potential of using NPs to improve the properties of a laboratory bentonite-based drilling fluid without barite. In the present work, iron oxide NPs have been synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The effect of these hydrophilic NPs has been evaluated in bentonite and KCl-based drilling fluids. Rheological properties at different temperatures, viscoelastic properties, lubricity, and filtrate loss were measured to study the effect of NPs on the base fluid. Also, elemental analysis of the filtrate and microscale analysis of the filter cake was performed. Results for bentonite-based fluid showed that 0.019 wt% (0.1 g) of NPs reduced the coefficient of friction by 47%, and 0.0095 wt% (0.05 g) of NPs reduced the fluid loss by 20%. Moreover, for KCl-ba... [more]

Keywords: C-TiO2-Pd composite electrode, infrared thermal imaging, redox flow battery, separation membrane, thermal effect
In this study, a new monitoring method was developed, titled infrared thermal imaging technology, which can effectively evaluate the thermal effect of the charge-discharge test in the vanadium/iodine redox flow battery (V/I RFB). The results show that the all-vanadium redox flow battery (all-V RFB) has a greater molar reaction Gibbs free energy change than that of the V/I RFB, representing a large thermal effect of the all-V RFB than the V/I RFB. The charge-discharge parameters, flow rate and current density, are important factors for inducing the thermal effect, because of the concentration polarization and the ohmic resistor. The new membrane (HS-SO3H) shows a high ion exchange capacity and a good ions crossover inhibitory for the V/I RFB system, and has a high coulomb efficiency that reaches 96%. The voltage efficiency was enhanced from 61% to 86% using the C-TiO2-Pd composite electrode as a cathode with the serpentine-type flow field for the V/I RFB. By adopting the high-resolution... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current density, current filament, cylindrical conductors, multi-wire bus duct, proximity effect, skin effect, successive reactions
Power and communication lines with round wires are often used in electrical engineering. The skin and proximity effects affect the current density distribution and increase resistances and energy losses. Many approaches were proposed to calculate the effects and related quantities. One of the simplest approximate closed solutions neglects the dimensions of neighboring wires. In this paper, a solution to this problem is proposed based on the method of successive reactions. In this context, the solution with substitutive filaments is considered as the first approximation of the true solution. Several typical arrangements of wires in single-phase communication lines or three-phase bus ducts are considered to detect the limits of applicability of the first approximation. The error of the first approximation grows with wire radius to skin depth ratio and wire radius to wire spacing ratio. When the wire radius to skin depth ratio is up to 1, and the gap between the wires is above the wire ra... [more]

Keywords: dissolved gas analysis, high voltage bushing, oil-paper insulation
The article describes a case study when the voltage collapse during lightning impulse tests of new power transformers was noticed and when the repeated tests finished with a positive result. The step-by-step process of reaching the conclusion on the basis of dissolved gas analysis (DGA) as a key method of the investigations was presented. The considerations on the possible source of the analysis showed that the Duval triangle method, used in the analysis of the concentration of gases dissolved in oil samples taken from bushings, more reliably and unambiguously than the ratio method recommended in the IEC 60599 Standard, indicated a phenomenon which was identified in the insulation structure of bushings analyzed. Additionally, the results from DGA were found to be consistent with an internal inspection of bushings, which showed a visible trace of discharge on the inside part of the epoxy housing, as a result of the lightning induced breakdown.

Keywords: bowl diffuser, CFD-DEM, deep-ocean mining, particle motion, slurry transport pump
The slurry transport pump is the key equipment of deep-ocean mining systems. The motion law of coarse particles in the pump is not clear enough. In this paper, a hydraulic model of a laboratory-scale two-stage slurry transport pump is constructed, and the motion characteristics of coarse particles in the pump are numerically studied by using the computational fluid dynamics−discrete element method (CFD-DEM) method. The performance curve of the pump is obtained by experimental measurement, and the reliability of the calculated results is verified. Due to the application of the amplification flow rate design method, the optimum efficiency point of the pump is shifted to the large flow rate condition. Differences in particle swarm within two stages are compared. The position distribution, velocity variation and trajectory of particles in the impeller and bowl diffuser are studied in detail.
