Influence of Wake Model Superposition and Secondary Steering on Model-Based Wake Steering Control with SCADA Data Assimilation
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: data assimilation, wake modeling, wake steering, wind farm
Methods for wind farm power optimization through the use of wake steering often rely on engineering wake models due to the computational complexity associated with resolving wind farm dynamics numerically. Within the transient, turbulent atmospheric boundary layer, closed-loop control is required to dynamically adjust to evolving wind conditions, wherein the optimal wake model parameters are estimated as a function of time in a hybrid physics- and data-driven approach using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data. Analytic wake models rely on wake velocity deficit superposition methods to generalize the individual wake deficit to collective wind farm flow. In this study, the impact of the wake model superposition methodologies on closed-loop control are tested in large eddy simulations of the conventionally neutral atmospheric boundary layer with full Coriolis effects. A model for the non-vanishing lateral velocity trailing a yaw misaligned turbine, termed secondary steer... [more]

Experimental Study of the Effect of Fuel Catalytic Additive on Specific Fuel Consumption and Exhaust Emissions in Diesel Engine
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel engines, emissions, fuel additives, specific fuel consumption
Fuel catalytic additives have been tested for many years. Herein, their influence on the overall efficiency of combustion engines is investigated, and their pro-ecological impact is assessed. The majority of this research concerns diesel engines. Despite many advantages, to this day, the use of catalytic additives has not become widespread. Wishing to clarify the situation, a research group from the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology decided to investigate this matter, starting with verification tests. This article presents the methodology and results of testing an actual diesel engine, and evaluates the effects of the use of a fuel catalytic additive. The focus was on the analysis of fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions from a Doosan MD196TI engine. The tested additive was a commercial fuel performance catalyst (FAMAX) with up to 5% ferric chloride as an organometallic compound. The proportion of the mixture with the fuel was 1:2000. These studies provide an energy and... [more]

Absorption Refrigeration Systems Based on Ammonia as Refrigerant Using Different Absorbents: Review and Applications
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: absorption refrigeration systems, ammonia, lithium nitrate, prototypes, thermodynamic properties
The interest in employing absorption refrigeration systems is usually related to electricity’s precariousness since these systems generally use thermal rejects for their activation. The application of these systems is closely linked to the concept of energy polygeneration, in which the energy demand to operate them is reduced, which represents their main advantage over the conventional vapor compression system. Currently, the solution pairs used in commercial absorption chillers are lithium bromide/water and ammonia/water. The latter pair has been used in air conditioning and industrial processes due to the ammonia operation’s low temperature. Few review papers on absorption chillers have been published, discussing the use of solar energy as the input source of the systems, the evolution of the absorption refrigeration cycles over the last decades, and promising alternatives to increase the performance of absorption refrigeration systems. There is a lack of consistent studies about des... [more]

Application of the Protective Coating for Blade’s Thermal Protection
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cooling of gas turbine blades, porous material, the inverse problem of heat conduction
This paper presents an algorithm applied for determining temperature distribution inside the gas turbine blade in which the external surface is coated with a protective layer. Inside the cooling channel, there is a porous material enabling heat to be transferred from the entire volume of the channel. This algorithm solves the nonlinear problem of heat conduction with the known: heat transfer coefficient on the external side of the blade surface, the temperature of gas surrounding the blade, coefficients of heat conduction of the protective coating and of the material the blade is made of as well as of the porous material inside the channel, the volumetric heat transfer coefficient for the porous material and the temperature of the air flowing through the porous material. Based on these data, the distribution of material porosity is determined in such a way that the temperature on the boundary between the protective coating and the material the blade is made of is equal to the assumed d... A Fast Two-Dimensional Numerical Method for the Wake Simulation of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite vortex method, three-dimensional effect correction model of the wake, two-dimensional wake simulation, vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), vortex particle method
In the array design of the vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT), the wake effect of the upstream VAWT on the downstream VAWT needs to be considered. In order to simulate the velocity distribution of a VAWT wake rapidly, a new two-dimensional numerical method is proposed, which can make the array design easier and faster. In this new approach, the finite vortex method and vortex particle method are combined to simulate the generation and evolution of the vortex, respectively, the fast multipole method (FMM) is used to accelerate the calculation. Based on a characteristic of the VAWT wake, that is, the velocity distribution can be fitted into a power-law function, a new correction model is introduced to correct the three-dimensional effect of the VAWT wake. Finally, the simulation results can be approximated to the published experimental results in the first-order. As a new numerical method to simulate the complex VAWT wake, this paper proves the feasibility of the method and makes a preli... [more]

2030 Target for Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction in the EU Paper Industry
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2030 target, emission reduction, energy saving, EU paper industry, SBM, TFEE
Improving energy efficiency is an effective way to address the issues of economic development, energy saving and emissions reduction. For any important industries it is therefore necessary to measure energy efficiency and set a practical target for it. In this paper, we use CCR, SBM and energy intensity to measure the energy efficiency of the paper industries of 22 EU countries. Results indicate that the SBM and CCR efficiency value is more meaningful for policy makers than that of energy intensity, as measurement results of energy intensity deviate from reality and economic efficiency. The CCR and SBM have roughly the same fluctuation trends and the average SBM energy efficiency value is 0.71, always 10 percent lower than CCR model, as it takes simultaneous account of both the optimal input-output and has more discriminatory power in efficiency measurement. Furthermore, EU policy makers could improve energy efficiency by raising energy prices. As for the 2030 EU target of energy savin... [more]

A Multi-Timescale Integrated Operation Model for Balancing Power Generation, Ecology, and Water Supply of Reservoir Operation
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy production, environmental flow, multi-objective scheduling, multi-timescale integrated operation model, water supply
In traditional ecological scheduling, a single monthly or daily model will lead to the incomplete transmission of ecological information or increase the complexity of solving problems. Therefore, a multi-timescale nested model (MTNM) is proposed. Although the MTNM can express the daily flow process of environmental flow, the quadratic nested calculation method cannot obtain the optimal solution for the daily scheduling scheme. Targeting the problem that long and short-term objectives cannot obtain the optimal solution at the same time, this paper proposes a multi-timescale integrated model (MTIM) which considers the monthly, 10-day, and daily scale. The model is applied to the Liujiaxia reservoir. The scheduling results show that, compared with the MTNM, the MTIM can better meet the multi-objective demand. In a wet year, when both models can guarantee water supply and ecological demand, the MTIM increases electricity generation by 0.91%. In a dry year, electricity generation can still... [more]

High-Efficiency HVAC System with Defog/Dehumidification Function for Electric Vehicles
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: defog, electric vehicle, green car transition, green cars, HVAC, recovery technologies for cars, sustainable cars, thermal management
Electric vehicles (EVs) generally use an electric heating system to provide heat. However, the heating system consumes a large amount of energy, and therefore reduces the mileage of the vehicle. The energy consumption can be reduced by replacing the electric heating system with a heat pump air conditioning system. Such systems achieve an effective heating of the vehicle interior, but do not provide a defog or dehumidification function. Consequently, the inside surface of the windshield tends to fog in cold weather; leading to poor driver visibility and an impaired road safety. Accordingly, the present study proposes a novel high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system with both heating and defog/dehumidification functions for electric vehicles. The effectiveness of the proposed system is investigated experimentally using a simulated cabin placed in a temperature and humidity-controlled test chamber. The experimental results confirm that the HVAC system achiev... [more]

Construction and Empirical Verification of the Agri-Environmental Index (AEI) as a Tool for Assessing the Green Performance of Agriculture
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agri-environmental indicators, comparative analysis, Energy Efficiency, green agriculture, green performance index, taxonomic methods, zero unitarization method
In this paper, the aggregate index of green performance of agriculture (Agri-Environmental Index (AEI)) was proposed and empirically verified. For this purpose, a taxonomic method was used, i.e., the linear ordering method, which allows for the construction of a synthetic metric for the assessment of performance. Based on 16 agri-environmental indicators from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Eurostat database, green performance indexes were constructed for 20 European countries. The constructed indexes are based on the multi-line impact of agriculture on the environment, with a particular focus on energy issues. During the analyses, answers to the following research questions were sought: Is the AEI an appropriate tool for evaluating the green performance of agriculture? What is the overall situation in this matter in EU countries? Which areas in terms of the impact of agriculture on the environment require remedial actions? The results of surveys sh... [more]

Dynamics of Heaving Buoy Wave Energy Converters with a Stiffness Reactive Controller
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: irregular waves, point absorber, power-take-off damping, reactive control, Wave Energy
Heaving buoy wave energy converters (WEC) are floating oscillators, commonly modeled as single-degree-of-freedom vibrating systems. As the wave frequencies change according to the sea state, these devices must be controlled to maximize energy absorption. A new short-term reactive loading control technique is proposed that maximizes power absorption. The control is realized through tuning the effective stiffness of the vibrating system; thus, adjusting its natural frequency to meet the incident waves energy frequency achieving near-to-resonance operation and maximum power absorption. This stiffness is adjusted using an external stiffness, whose value is varied by a continuously variable transmission (CVT) mechanism connected to the buoy. The system equations were derived then solved analytically to calculate the controller bandwidth. Experiments demonstrated promising results for near-resonance tuning at different input frequencies. Results show that an optimized damping value exists at... [more]

Towards a Predictive Simulation of Turbulent Combustion?—An Assessment for Large Internal Combustion Engines
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, emissions, internal combustion engines, large engines, LES, spray, turbulence
Frequently the question arises in what sense numerical simulation can be considered predictive if prior model tuning with test results is necessary. In this paper a summary of the present Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation methods for in-cylinder modelling is presented with a focus on combustion processes relevant for large engines. The current discussion about the sustainability of internal combustion engines will have a strong impact on applying advanced CFD methods in industrial processes. It is therefore included in the assessment. Simplifications and assumptions of turbulence, spray, and combustion models, as well as uncertainties of model boundary conditions, are discussed and the future potential of an advanced approach like Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is evaluated. It follows that a high amount of expertise and a careful evaluation of the numerical results will remain necessary in the future to apply the best-suited models for a given combustion process. Non-Intrusive Measurements to Incorporate the Air Renovations in Dynamic Models Assessing the In-Situ Thermal Performance of Buildings
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air renovation, building energy, building envelope, non-intrusive measurements, on-board monitoring, performance assessment
This paper reports the analysis of the feasibility to characterise the air leakage and the mechanical ventilation avoiding the intrusiveness of the traditional measurement techniques of the corresponding indicators in buildings. The viability of obtaining the air renovation rate itself from measurements of the concentration of the metabolic CO2, and the possibilities to express this rate as function of other climatic variables, are studied. N2O tracer gas measurements have been taken as reference. A Test Cell and two full size buildings, with and without mechanical ventilation and with different levels of air leakage, are considered as case studies. One-month test campaigns have been used for the reference N2O tracer gas experiments. Longer periods are available for the analysis based on CO2 concentration. When the mechanical ventilation is not active, the results indicate significant correlation between the air renovation rate and the wind speed. The agreement between the N2O referenc... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: pyrolysis of plastics, recycling of polyolefin plastics on a full industrial scale, waste management
Although Poland is one of the leading recipients of the waste stream in the European Union (EU), it is at the same time below the average in terms of efficiency of their use/utilization. The adopted technological solutions cause waste processing rates to be relatively low in Poland. As a result, the report of the Early Warning and Response System (EWRS) of the EU indicated Poland as one of the 14 countries of the EU which are at risk in terms of possibility of achieving 50% recycling of waste. This article discusses the implemented technological solutions, and shows the profitability of the investment and the values of the process heat demand both for extractor and reactor. The experimental part analyzed the composition of the input and output of the process and compared it to the required fuel specifications. Attention was drawn to the need to improve the recycling process in order to increase the quality of manufactured fuel components. As potential ways of solving the problem of low... [more]

A New Method of Regulation of Loads Acting on the Shaft Lining in Sections Located in the Salt Rock Mass
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: leaching, mine shaft, salt rock
Rock salt is characterized by specific geomechanical and rheological properties. Layers of rock salt at depths of over 900 m cause problems with shaft lining deformation. Methods of shaft lining protection used to date (e.g., in the Sieroszowice mine) have not been effective enough. The research presents a patented and copyright protected concept of a shaft lining construction that can be used in rock masses with strong rheological properties and susceptibility to leaching. A high value of convergence in salt rock mass is a reason for serious problems with shaft lining stability. Numerous trials have been done to provide appropriate shaft lining for salt layers, especially to ensure proper geometry of shaft members and conveyance guidance. In the new shaft lining concept, the excessive rock creep into the outbreak inside the shaft diameter is removed by local and controlled leaching of the shaft cheeks by means of fresh water through a porous medium at the contact layer behind the wate... The Impact on Emissions When an Engine Is Run on Fuel with a High Heavy Alcohol Content
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emissions, Energy, IC engines, n-Butanol
This research reviews the impact on emissions from the engine fueled with the fuel containing a large share of bio-components, in particular with 30% n-Butanol. The research was carried out using a diesel engine. It has been shown that it is possible to achieve a double positive ecological effect concerning CO2 emissions. There was a decrease in CO2 emission from the engine with the fuel contained a significant share of bio-carbon. At the same time, NOx and Filter Smoke Number (FSN) emissions have been reduced together (FSN in large percentage). Usually, if NOx emissions are reduced, FSN increases, and vice versa. The paper shows also that the use of n-Butanol (bio, but nonfood) in the future is more effective than larger amounts of higher fatty acids methyl esters, although the full withdrawal of these esters seems unjustified.

The Applicability of Coanda Effect Hysteresis for Designing Unsteady Ventilation Systems
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Coanda effect, Coanda effect hysteresis (CEH), mixing ventilation, unsteady ventilation
Energy-saving ventilation systems are designed to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Low energy efficiency in buildings poses a considerable problem that needs to be addressed. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery has gained increased popularity in recent years. Mechanical ventilation has numerous advantages, including easy adjustment and control, high indoor air quality and elimination of indoor pollutants. Mixing ventilation is the most popular type of mechanical ventilation, in particular in residential buildings. Unsteady ventilation is a type of mixing ventilation that involves stronger mixing effects and smaller vertical temperature gradients to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) and minimize energy consumption. This study examines the possibility of controlling and modifying Coanda effect hysteresis (CEH) to generate unsteady flow and simulate the conditions of unsteady mixing ventilation. Cooling System Energy Consumption Reduction through a Novel All-Electric Powertrain Traction Module and Control Optimization

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control optimization, electric vehicle, modularity, propulsion cooling system, thermal management
In this work, the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the cooling circuit for the propulsion system of an all-electric vehicle is approached with two different concepts: improvement of the powertrain efficiency and optimization of the control strategy. Improvement of the powertrain efficiency is obtained through a modular design, which consists of replacing the electric powertrain with several smaller traction modules whose powers sum up to the total power of the original powertrain. In this paper, it is shown how modularity, among other benefits, also allows reducing the energy consumption of the cooling system up to 54%. The energy consumption of the cooling system is associated with two components: the pump and the fan. They produce a so-called auxiliary load on the battery, reducing the maximum range of the vehicle. In conventional cooling systems, the pump and the fan are controlled with a thermostat, without taking into account the energy consumption. Conversely, in thi... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coupling, geothermal source heat pump, heating, performance analysis, solar thermal system
Geothermal source heat pump (GSHP) systems as renewable energy systems are being more frequently installed as part of the zero-energy building drive. However, in South Korea, where a large amount of heating load can be required, maintaining high system performance by using only a GSHP is difficult owing to the gradual degradation of its thermal performance. The performance of a solar-assisted GSHP system was therefore experimentally analyzed and compared with a GSHP-only system. The results showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the GSHP-only operation was 5.4, while that of the solar-assisted GSHP operation was 7.0. In the case of the GSHP-only system, the maximum temperature of the heat pump water supply on the heat source side was initially 13.1 °C, but this rapidly decreased to 11.4 °C during operation. For the solar-assisted GSHP system, the temperature of the water supply to the heat source side of the heat pump was controlled at 15−20.9 °C, and the power consumpti... [more]
