Enhanced Quadratic V/f-Based Induction Motor Control of Solar Water Pumping System
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy logic controller, induction motor, quadratic V/f, sliding mode controller, solar PV water pumping systems
In rural and remote areas, solar photovoltaic energy (PV) water pumping systems (SPWPSs) are being favored over diesel-powered water pumping due to environmental and economic considerations. PV is a clean source of electric energy offering low operational and maintenance cost. However, the direct-coupled SPWPS requires inventive solutions to improve the system’s efficiency under solar power variations while producing the required amount of pumped water concurrently. This paper introduces a new quadratic V/f (Q V/f) control method to drive an induction motor powered directly from a solar PV source using a two-stage power converter without storage batteries. Conventional controllers usually employ linear V/f control, where the reference motor speed is derived from the PV input power and the dc-link voltage error using a simple proportional−integral (PI) controller. The proposed Q V/f-based system is compared with the conventional linear V/f control using a simulation case study under dif... [more]

Effect of Storage Time on the Physicochemical Properties of Waste Fish Oils and Used Cooking Vegetable Oils
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-oil, free fatty acid, fuel aging, renewable energy sources
Waste fish oils (FOs) and used cooking vegetable oils (UCOs) are increasingly becoming alternative renewable fuels. However, different physicochemical aspects of these renewable fuels, including the effect of storage, are not well-known. In this work, the effect of the storage period on physicochemical properties of selected samples of FOs and UCOs was investigated. The bio-oils were stored at 4 °C for up to five years before each experimentation. The chemical properties were characterized using capillary gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and high-performance size exclusion chromatography including an evaporative light scattering detector (HPSEC-ELSD). Water contents and acid numbers of the bio-oils were determined using the Karl Fischer (KF) titration and the ASTM D 664 methods. Furthermore, the average heating values and surface tension of the bio-oils were determined. According to the results obtained, for all bio-oil types, the concentrations of polymerize... [more]

Considerations on Current and Voltage Unbalance of Nonlinear Loads in Residential and Educational Sectors
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: nonlinear consumers, power factor, power quality, unbalance
Most often, electrical consumers in the residential and educational sectors are different from industrial electrical consumers. Whereas the vast majority of industrial electrical consumers are low-voltage, three-phase (with three or four wires), electrical consumers in the residential and educational sectors are low-voltage, single-phase. However, in practice, electrical consumers in the residential and educational sectors are in large numbers. Usually, current and voltage unbalances are lower in the industrial sector compared to the residential and educational sectors, where there are a large number of low-voltage, single-phase consumers that are connected/disconnected in an uncontrollable way and that need to be wired and balanced on each phase of power transformers from power substations. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of electrical balance and improve the power factor in the power substation from residential and educational sectors. The paper investigates the c... [more]

Statistical Analysis of AC Dielectric Strength of Natural Ester-Based ZnO Nanofluids
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: AC breakdown voltage, nanofluids, naturel ester oil, normal distribution, Weibull distribution, zinc oxide
Due to environmental concerns and increased energy demand, natural esters are among the alternatives to mineral oils in transformers. This study examines the electrical behavior of natural ester-based ZnO nanofluids at different concentrations in the range of 0.05−0.4 g/L. AC breakdown voltages are measured in a horizontally positioned sphere−sphere electrode system according to IEC 60156 specifications. The measurement data are analyzed using Weibull and normal distribution functions. Breakdown voltages with 1%, 10% and 50% probability are also estimated, these probabilities being of great interest for the design of power electrical components. Experimental results show that AC breakdown voltage increases with the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles, except for the concentration of 0.05 and 0.4 g/L of ZnO. Moreover, breakdown voltages at 1% and 10% probability increase by 22.7% and 13.2% when adding 0.1 g/L ZnO to natural ester, respectively.

Improving Energy Transition Analysis Tool through Hydropower Statistical Modelling
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: energy modelling, energy transition, hydropower, renewable grid integration, Spain, time series models
Reservoir and pumped hydro storage facilities represent one of the best options for providing flexibility at low marginal cost and very low life cycle carbon emissions. However, hydropower generation is subject to physical, environmental and regulatory constraints, which introduce complexity in the modelling of hydropower in the context of transition energy analysis. In this article, a probabilistic model for hydropower generation is developed in order to improve an hourly-resolved tool for transition path analysis presented in previous research. The model is based on time series analysis, which exploits the fact that the different constraints affecting hydropower generation were met in the past. The upgraded version of the transition path analysis tool shows a decrease in the hydropower flexibility as compared with previous published results, providing a better picture of the benefits and drawbacks associated with a specific transition path under analysis, for example in terms of asse... Impact of the Degree Days of the Heating Period on Economically and Ecologically Optimal Thermal Insulation Thickness
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic and ecological heating costs, life cycle assessment, maximum ecological benefits, maximum economic benefits, optimal insulation thickness
The article proposes methods for determining the optimal thermal insulation thickness for economic and ecological reasons, depending on the number of degree days of the heating period. Life cycle assessment was used for the ecological analysis. Analyses were performed for selected variants typical of Polish conditions. The optimal thermal insulation thickness as well as the amount of economic and ecological benefits depends very much on the condition of the building without thermal insulation, but also on the heat source used and the thermal insulation material to be used. For each variant, the optimal thermal insulation thickness for ecological reasons is much greater than the optimal for economic reasons. Taking into consideration the climatic zone and the associated number of degree days of the heating period, the colder the zone, the greater the optimal insulation thickness, as well as economic and ecological benefits.

The Immediate Impacts of COVID-19 on European Electricity Systems: A First Assessment and Lessons Learned
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COVID-19, demand, electricity markets, pandemic, power system, renewables
The worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced most countries to intervene with policies and actions—including lockdowns, social-distancing and smart working measures—aimed at mitigating the health system and socio-economic disruption risks. The electricity sector was impacted as well, with performance largely reflecting the changes in the industrial and commercial sectors operations and in the social behavior patterns. The most immediate consequences concerned the power demand profiles, the generation mix composition and the electricity price trends. As a matter of fact, the electricity sectors experienced a foretaste of the future, with higher renewable energy penetration and concerns for security of supply. This paper presents a systemic approach toward assessing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the power sector. This is aimed at supporting decision making—particularly for policy makers, regulators, and system operators—by quantifying shorter term effects and id... [more]

Experimental Study and Conjugate Heat Transfer Simulation of Turbulent Flow in a 90° Curved Square Pipe
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: conjugate heat transfer, heat exchanger, secondary flow, temperature fields, turbulent flow
This paper discusses the turbulent flow and heat transfer from a uniform air flow with high temperature to the outside through a 90° curved square pipe. Both conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulation and experiments of temperature field measurements at cross sections of the pipe are performed. A straight pipe is investigated and compared with the 90° curved pipe. The temperature of the air flow at the inlet of the pipe is set at 402 K, and the corresponding Reynolds number is approximately 6 × 104. To obtain the spatial average temperature at each cross section, the temperature fields are measured along the streamwise of the pipes and in the circumferential direction using thermocouples at each cross section from the inlet to the outlet of both the straight and curved pipes. Furthermore, the simulation is performed for turbulent flow and heat transfer inside the pipe wall using the Re-normalization group (RNG) k-ε turbulence model and CHT method. Sealing of a Deep Horizontal Borehole Repository for Nuclear Waste
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: backfill, fault reactivation, horizontal borehole repository, nuclear waste disposal, sealing, spent nuclear fuel
The depth and layout of a horizontal borehole repository has the potential to offer strong isolation of nuclear waste from the surface. However, the isolation may be compromised by the borehole used to access the repository, as it could provide a direct fast-flow path transporting radionuclides from the disposal section to the accessible environment. Thus, backfilling the disposal section and sealing the access hole are considered essential engineered safety components. To analyze the importance of plugging the open space between canisters and sealing the access hole, we numerically calculate non-isothermal fluid flow and radionuclide transport through the borehole and the surrounding geosphere for a variety of scenarios, which include backfill materials with different sealing properties and configurations that potentially induce strong driving forces along both the horizontal and vertical sections of the borehole. The simulations indicate that the dose contribution of radionuclides re... [more]

Use of Available Daylight to Improve Short-Term Load Forecasting Accuracy
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: daylight, load forecasting, Power Demand
This paper introduces a new methodology to include daylight information in short-term load forecasting (STLF) models. The relation between daylight and power consumption is obvious due to the use of electricity in lighting in general. Nevertheless, very few STLF systems include this variable as an input. In addition, an analysis of one of the current STLF models at the Spanish Transmission System Operator (TSO), shows two humps in its error profile, occurring at sunrise and sunset times. The new methodology includes properly treated daylight information in STLF models in order to reduce the forecasting error during sunrise and sunset, especially when daylight savings time (DST) one-hour time shifts occur. This paper describes the raw information and the linearization method needed. The forecasting model used as the benchmark is currently used at the TSO’s headquarters and it uses both autoregressive (AR) and neural network (NN) components. A Novel Integrated Profit Maximization Model for Retailers under Varied Penetration Levels of Photovoltaic Systems
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, deregulated electricity market, Optimization, photovoltaics, retailer
In contemporary energy markets, the Retailer acts as the intermediate between the generation and demand sectors. The scope of the Retailer is to maximize its profits by selecting the appropriate procurement mechanism and selling price to the consumers. The wholesale market operation influences the profits since the mix of generation plants determines the system marginal price (SMP). In the related literature, the SMP is treated as a stochastic variable, and the wholesale market conditions are not taken into account. The present paper presents a novel methodology that aims at connecting the wholesale and retail market operations from a Retailer’s perspective. A wholesale market clearing problem is formulated and solved. The scope is to examine how different photovoltaics (PV) penetration levels in the generation side influences the profits of the Retailer and the selling prices to the consumers. The resulting SMPs are used as inputs in a retailer profit maximization problem. This approa... [more]

Bioenergy Conversion Potential of Decaying Hardwoods
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: biochemical pathway, biomass properties, thermochemical pathway, white-rot fungi, wood rot
Unharvested hardwoods are abundant in eastern Canada, due to the low quality of their fiber and the absence of outlets in conventional wood transformation industries. The objective of this study was to assess the biochemical and thermochemical energy conversion potential of decaying hardwoods and compare their relationships with external and internal indicators of tree degradation. We characterized how wood-decay processes altered the physical and chemical properties of these woods and affected their digestibility yield and their performance according to indexes of stability and efficiency of combustion. DNA analysis on wood samples was also performed to determine the relative abundance of white-rot fungi compared to that of other saprotrophs. All properties stayed within the range of variations allowing the wood to remain suitable for conversion into bioenergy, even with increased decay. We found no significant differences in the physical and chemical properties that are crucial for e... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat loss, heat transfer, solar domestic hot water system
In this article, the research object is the solar domestic hot water (SDHW) heating system that has been in operation since 2015 and is located on the campus of the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland). The thermal performance of solar collectors are thoroughly investigated so far. Therefore, special attention was paid to the issue of the heat loss from pipes. The measurements showed that the heat transfer in circulation pipes is quite complex due to continuous fluctuations in water temperature at the supply of this loop. As it turned out, the application of the classical method of energy balancing and the readings from heat meters gave inaccurate results in this case. The main aim of this study was to develop a different approach to solving the problem of determination of heat losses. The method presented in this article is based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and measurement results as the input data. The practical result of this study was the development of two relatio... A Lightweight Secure and Energy-Efficient Fog-Based Routing Protocol for Constraint Sensors Network
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: cryptanalysis, Energy Efficiency, information security, Internet of Things, lightweight routing, wireless sensor networks
The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has seen rapid growth in the development of real-time applications due to its ease of management and cost-effective attributes. However, the balance between optimization of network lifetime and load distribution between sensor nodes is a critical matter for the development of energy-efficient routing solutions. Recently, many solutions have been proposed for constraint-based networks using the cloud paradigm. However, they achieve network scalability with the additional cost of routing overheads and network latency. Moreover, the sensors’ data is transmitted towards application users over the uncertain medium, which leads to compromised data security and its integrity. Therefore, this work proposes a light-weight secure and energy-efficient fog-based routing (SEFR) protocol to minimize data latency and increase energy management. It exploits the Quality of Service (QoS) factors and facilitates time-sensitive applications with network edges. Moreover, t... [more]

Day-Ahead Market Modelling of Large-Scale Highly-Renewable Multi-Energy Systems: Analysis of the North Sea Region towards 2050
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: day ahead market, energy system, large scale, operational planning, unit commitment
This paper proposes a mathematical model in order to simulate Day-ahead markets of large-scale multi-energy systems with a high share of renewable energy. Furthermore, it analyses the importance of including unit commitment when performing such analysis. The results of the case study, which is performed for the North Sea region, show the influence of massive renewable penetration in the energy sector and increasing electrification of the district heating sector towards 2050, and how this impacts the role of other energy sources, such as thermal and hydro. The penetration of wind and solar is likely to challenge the need for balancing in the system as well as the profitability of thermal units. The degree of influence of the unit commitment approach is found to be dependent on the configuration of the energy system. Overall, including unit commitment constraints with integer variables leads to more realistic behaviour of the units, at the cost of considerably increasing the computationa... [more]

Core Temperature Estimation for a Lithium ion 18650 Cell
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery core temperature, Kalman filter, Li ion battery, MATLAB/Simulink, thermal management system
This paper deals with the estimation of core temperature (Tc) of a Lithium (Li) ion battery using measured ambient and surface temperatures. The temperatures were measured using thermocouples placed at appropriate locations. A second order thermal model was considered for the core temperature (Tc) estimation. A set of coupled linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) were obtained by applying Kirchhoff’s current and voltage laws to the thermal model. The coupled ODEs were redefined in the discrete state space representation. The thermal model did not account for small changes in surface temperature (Ts). MATLAB/Simulink were used for modelling a Kalman filter with appropriate process and measurement noise levels. It was found that the temperatures closely followed the current patterns. For high currents, Tc dominated the surface temperature by about 3 K. Tc estimation plays a very important role in designing an effective thermal management and maintaining the state of health (SOH)... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: complex neural network, frequency response analysis, medium voltage underground cables, power line communications, prognostic approach, testability index
A smart monitoring system capable of detecting and classifying the health conditions of MV (Medium Voltage) underground cables is presented in this work. Using the analysis technique proposed here, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of catastrophic failures in medium voltage underground lines, for which it is generally difficult to realize maintenance operations and carry out punctual inspections. This prognostic method is based on Frequency Response Analysis (FRA) and can be used online during normal network operation, resulting in a minimally invasive tool. In order to obtain the good results shown in the simulation section, it is necessary to develop a lamped equivalent circuit of the network branch under consideration. The standard π-model is used in this paper to analyse sections of a medium voltage cable and the parameter variations with temperature are used to classify the state of health of the line. NO Formation and Autoignition Dynamics during Combustion of H2O-Diluted NH3/H2O2 Mixtures with Air
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: additives, ammonia, autoignition, computational singular perturbation, explosive time scales, hydrogen peroxide, ignition delay control, NOx, water vapor
NO formation, which is one of the main disadvantages of ammonia combustion, was studied during the isochoric, adiabatic autoignition of ammonia/air mixtures using the algorithm of Computational Singular Perturbation (CSP). The chemical reactions supporting the action of the mode relating the most to NO were shown to be essentially the ones of the extended Zeldovich mechanism, thus indicating that NO formation is mainly thermal and not due to fuel-bound nitrogen. Because of this, addition of water vapor reduced NO formation, because of its action as a thermal buffer, but increased ignition delay, thus exacerbating the second important caveat of ammonia combustion, which is unrealistically long ignition delay. However, it was also shown that further addition of just 2% molar of H2O2 does not only reduce the ignition delay by a factor of 30, but also reverses the way water vapor affects ignition delay. Specifically, in the ternary mixture NH3/H2O/H2O2, addition of water vapor does not pro... [more]

Systematic Method for the Energy-Saving Potential Calculation of Air-Conditioning Systems via Data Mining. Part I: Methodology

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: data mining, energy saving potential, operational data, Optimization, recognition
Air-conditioning systems contribute the most to energy consumption among building equipment. Hence, energy saving for air-conditioning systems would be the essence of reducing building energy consumption. The conventional energy-saving diagnosis method through observation, test, and identification (OTI) has several drawbacks such as time consumption and narrow focus. To overcome these problems, this study proposed a systematic method for energy-saving diagnosis in air-conditioning systems based on data mining. The method mainly includes seven steps: (1) data collection, (2) data preprocessing, (3) recognition of variable-speed equipment, (4) recognition of system operation mode, (5) regression analysis of energy consumption data, (6) constraints analysis of system running, and (7) energy-saving potential analysis. A case study with a complicated air-conditioning system coupled with an ice storage system demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with the traditiona... [more]

Experimental Investigation on the Thermoacoustic Effect in Easily Accessible Porous Materials
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: stack, thermoacoustic refrigerator, thermoacoustics
Thermoacoustic devices are the systems which use acoustic power to transport heat through a stack in a resonance tube. The stack is one of the most important parts of the thermoacoustic systems. It can have different geometries, like parallel plates, circular pores, or pin arrays. However, the fabrication of stacks with regular geometries is sometimes impractical due to material and assembly costs. These problems can be solved by using stack fabricated with random and easily accessible porous materials. In this paper an experimental investigation on the thermoacoustic effect in easily accessible porous materials is presented. The measurements with the stacks were made in a standing wave device filled with air at atmospheric pressure. The reported results confirm that some of the materials with high porosity can be an alternative to a traditional stack geometries and materials.

A Framework to Generate and Label Datasets for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: data annotation, non-intrusive load monitoring, semi-automatic labeling, smart meter
In order to reduce the electricity consumption in our homes, a first step is to make the user aware of it. Raising such awareness, however, demands to pinpoint users of specific appliances that unnecessarily consume electricity. A retrofittable and scalable way to provide appliance-specific consumption is provided by Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring methods. These methods use a single electricity meter to record the aggregated consumption of all appliances and disaggregate it into the consumption of each individual appliance using advanced algorithms usually utilizing machine-learning approaches. Since these approaches are often supervised, labelled ground-truth data need to be collected in advance. Labeling on-phases of devices is already a tedious process, but, if further information about internal device states is required (e.g., intensity of an HVAC), manual post-processing quickly becomes infeasible. Subject: Materials
Keywords: droplet cooling, heat transfer, nanofluid, nanofluid stabilization, nanofluid synthesis, spray cooling
Cooling by impinging droplets has been the subject of several studies for decades and still is, and, in the last few years, the potential heat transfer enhancement obtained thanks to nanofluids’ use has received increased interest. Indeed, the use of high thermal conductivity fluids, such as nanofluids’, is considered today as a possible way to strongly enhance this heat transfer process. This enhancement is related to several physical mechanisms. It is linked to the nanofluids’ rheology, their degree of stabilization, and how the presence of the nanoparticles impact the droplet/substrate dynamics. Although there are several articles on droplet impact dynamics and nanofluid heat transfer enhancement, there is a lack of review studies that couple these two topics. As such, this review aims to provide an analysis of the available literature dedicated to the dynamics between a single nanofluid droplet and a hot substrate, and the consequent enhancement or reduction of heat transfer. An Estimation of Hydraulic Power Take-off Unit Parameters for Wave Energy Converter Device Using Non-Evolutionary NLPQL and Evolutionary GA Approaches
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, hydraulic power take-off unit, non-linear programming by quadratic Lagrangian, parameter estimation, wave energy converter
This study is concerned with the application of two major kinds of optimisation algorithms on the hydraulic power take-off (HPTO) model for the wave energy converters (WECs). In general, the HPTO unit’s performance depends on the configuration of its parameters such as hydraulic cylinder size, hydraulic accumulator capacity and pre-charge pressure and hydraulic motor displacement. Conventionally, the optimal parameters of the HPTO unit need to be manually estimated by repeating setting the parameters’ values during the simulation process. However, such an estimation method can easily be exposed to human error and would subsequently result in an inaccurate selection of HPTO parameters for WECs. Therefore, an effective approach of using the non-evolutionary Non-Linear Programming by Quadratic Lagrangian (NLPQL) and evolutionary Genetic Algorithm (GA) algorithms for determining the optimal HPTO parameters was explored in the present study. A simulation−optimisation of the HPTO model was p... [more]
