A Genetic Algorithm Approach as a Self-Learning and Optimization Tool for PV Power Simulation and Digital Twinning
Dorian Esteban Guzman Razo, Björn Müller, Henrik Madsen, Christof Wittwer
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: auto-calibrated algorithms, digital simulation, genetic algorithms, Machine Learning, parameter estimation, photovoltaic systems
A key aspect for achieving a high-accuracy Photovoltaic (PV) power simulation, and reliable digital twins, is a detailed description of the PV system itself. However, such information is not always accurate, complete, or even available. This work presents a novel approach to learn features of unknown PV systems or subsystems using genetic algorithm optimization. Based on measured PV power, this approach learns and optimizes seven PV system parameters: nominal power, tilt and azimuth angles, albedo, irradiance and temperature dependency, and the ratio of nominal module to nominal inverter power (DC/AC ratio). By optimizing these parameters, we create a digital twin that accurately reflects the actual properties and behaviors of the unknown PV systems or subsystems. To develop this approach, on-site measured power, ambient temperature, and satellite-derived irradiance of a PV system located in south-west Germany are used. The approach proposed here achieves a mean bias error of about 10%... [more]
The Effect of Experimental Conditions on Methane (95%)−Propane (5%) Hydrate Formation
Sotirios Nik. Longinos, Mahmut Parlaktuna
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: induction time, natural gas hydrates, rate of hydrate formation
In the present study, the effect of different kinds of impellers with different baffles or no baffle was investigated. Up-pumping pitched blade turbine (PBTU) and Rushton turbine (RT) were the two types of impellers tested. The reactor was equipped with different designs of baffles: full, half and surface baffles or no baffles. Single (PBTU or RT) and dual (PBTU/PBTU or RT/RT) use of impellers with full (FB), half (HB), surface (SB) and no baffle (NB) combinations formed two sets of 16 experiments. There was estimation of rate of hydrate formation, induction time, hydrate productivity, overall power consumption, split fraction and separation factor. In both single and dual impellers, the results showed that RT experiments are better compared to PBTU in rate of hydrate formation. The induction time is almost the same since we are deep in the equilibrium line while hydrate productivity values are higher in PBTU compared to RT experiments. As general view RT experiments consume more energ... [more]

Łukasz Warguła, Mateusz Kukla, Piotr Lijewski, Michał Dobrzyński, Filip Markiewicz
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressed natural gas (CNG), exhaust emissions, fuel consumption, operating costs, spark ignition small engine, wood chipper
The projected increase in the availability of gaseous fuels by growing popularity of household natural gas (NG) filling stations and the increase in the production of gaseous biogas-derived fuels is conducive to an increase in the use of NG fuel. Currently, natural gas in various forms (compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG)) is popular in maritime, rail and road transport. A new direction of natural gas application may be non-road mobile machines powered by a small spark-ignition engine (SI). The use of these engines in the wood chippers can cause the reduction of machine costs and emissions of harmful exhaust gases. In addition, plant material chippers intended for composting in bio-gas plants can be driven by the gas they are used to produce. The biogas can be purified to bio-methane to meet natural gas quality standards. The article presents the design of the natural gas supply system, which is an upgrade of the Lifan GX 390 combustion engine spark ignition engin... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy performance gap, energy poverty, pre-war tenement building, user behavior
This paper presents the results of measuring the final energy consumption for heating and domestic hot water (DHW) preparation and indoor conditions in 15 apartments located in pre-war tenement houses. The measurements were compared to the computed energy consumption. The calculations ware made based on the model calibrated by field measurements. The discrepancies between measurements and calculations were assessed using the energy performance gap (EPG). Calculations were made separately for energy for heating and for DHW preparation. Additionally, the results of EPG calculations for different levels of analysis are presented aiming at assessing the impact of weather, temperature in the surrounding zones and users’ behavior. Users’ behaviors influencing the size of the EPG were divided into typical (energy saving or excessive energy consumption) and forced (energy poverty, response to the apartment’s surroundings, technical limitations. The connection between the heating sources and th... [more]
Design of Small LNG Supply Chain by Multi-Period Optimization
Alice Bittante, Henrik Saxén
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas distribution problem, LNG supply chain, MILP, route optimization
A mathematical model for the design of small-scale supply chains for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been developed. It considers the maritime delivery of LNG from supply ports to satellite terminals and land-based transports from the terminals to consumers on or off the coast. Both tactical and strategic aspects in the supply chain design are addressed by optimizing the maritime routing of a heterogeneous fleet of ships, truck connections, and the locations of the satellite terminals. The objective is to minimize the overall cost, including operation and investment costs for the selected time horizon. The model is expressed as a mixed-integer linear programming problem, applying a multi-period formulation to determine optimal storage sizes and inventory at the satellite terminals. Two case studies illustrate the model, where optimal LNG supply chains for a region with sparsely distributed island (without land transports) and a coastal region at a gulf (with both sea and land transport... Gabriela Rocha de Oliveira Fleury, Douglas Vieira do Nascimento, Arlindo Rodrigues Galvão Filho, Filipe de Souza Lima Ribeiro, Rafael Viana de Carvalho, Clarimar José Coelho
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CNN, hydroeletric power plant, MobileNetV2, redundancy information, residual networks, water level
Monitoring and management of water levels has become an essential task in obtaining hydroelectric power. Activities such as water resources planning, supply basin management and flood forecasting are mediated and defined through its monitoring. Measurements, performed by sensors installed on the river facilities, are used for precisely information about water level estimations. Since weather conditions influence the results obtained by these sensors, it is necessary to have redundant approaches in order to maintain the high accuracy of the measured values. Staff gauge monitored by conventional cameras is a common redundancy method to keep track of the measurements. However, this method has low accuracy and is not reliable once it is monitored by human eyes. This work proposes to automate this process by using image processing methods of the staff gauge to measure and deep neural network to estimate the water level. To that end, three models of neural networks were compared: the residua... [more]
Experimental Investigation of the Seamless Gearshift Mechanism Using an Electric Motor and a Planetary Gear-Set
Sun Je Kim, Kyung-Soo Kim
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CGST, gear-shift, planetary gear-set, seamless torque delivery, transmission
Vehicle transmission which has discrete gear-stages inevitably produces torque drop during shifting gears. This torque drop should be minimized because it may lead to uncomfortable driving feeling and degradation of acceleration performance. In accordance with the spread of electric-powered vehicle technology, this study proposes novel transmission architecture to eliminate torque drop during shifting gears by using one electric motor and verifies its operating concept through experiments with a test-bench. The proposed transmission, called CGST (clutchless geared smart transmission) can synchronize the gear-shaft to be engaged for the next gear-stage with the output shaft by using a planetary gear-set and an electric motor. The CGST has a dual input gear-box with even and odd gear-stages on different input shafts, and the planetary gear-set and the electric motor control the speeds of each input shafts to smoothly engage the next gear-stage. This idea was verified by the simplified te... [more]

Keywords: deep feedforward neural network, multioutput feedforward neural network, reservoir geological modeling, transfer learning
Three-dimensional (3D) reservoir geological modeling is an advanced reservoir characterization method, which runs through the exploration and the development process of oil and gas fields. Reservoir geological modeling is playing an increasingly significant role in determining the distribution, internal configuration, and quality of a reservoir as well. Conventional variogram-based methods such as statistical interpolation and reservoir geological modeling have difficulty characterizing complex reservoir geometries and heterogeneous reservoir properties. Taking advantage of deep feedforward neural networks (DFNNs) in nonlinear fitting, this paper compares the reservoir geological modeling results of different methods on the basis of an existing lithofacies model and seismic data from the X area of Karamay, Xinjiang, China. Adopted reservoir geological modeling methods include conventional sequential Gaussian simulation and DFNN-based reservoir geological modeling method. The constraine... [more]
Humanity Can Still Stop Climate Change by Implementing a New International Climate Agreement and Applying Radical New Technology

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, drinking water, Energy, Paris agreement, Seawater Steam Engine, sustainable development
There is a broad consensus worldwide that anthropogenic climate change is a scientific fact. Likewise, the fact is that the UN’s efforts to address climate change over the last 28 years have not been successful enough. It is evident that the global average temperature is on the rise (1.1 °C above pre-industrial levels in 2019). A particular concern comes from the fact that the Paris Agreement on keeping increases in the global average temperature to below +2 °C is an unenforceable ambition, since the focus is more on consequences than causes. In addition, economic policies regarding global taxes, as well as adaptation and mitigation measures, are questionable, as there is no evidence that changes in the climate system will proceed at the same rate in the coming years. This paper proposes an engineering approach that considers all relevant aspects of the climate change problem and proposes a new policy, named the “Climate New Deal”. It deals with: (i) Reorientation from a high-carbon ec... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical review, energy-water nexus, methods and tools
The relationship between water and energy is a strong one characterized as having integration and coupling as two important features. While energy is responsible for delivering water to the end-users, it needs energy in order to be generated, and water. In this paper, a thorough review is presented regarding the different relationships between water and energy in terms of (i) the significance of the close relationship between water and energy by means of water/energy generation and consumption. Water consumption, water cooling and heating must be taken into account in order to avoid the obstacles related to future use of water for energy generation; (ii) the measuring and monitoring technologies for the energy-water nexus, focusing attention on the variables that are interrelated in the water and energy sectors. In addition, the consequences of finding several parameters, unknown variables and unclear dependencies in measuring of energy usage in the applications of water usage should a... [more]

Xin Chen, Zhongliang Feng, Cheng Cheng
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: joint spacing, measurement circle, non-persistent open joints, PFC modeling, smooth-joint
Mechanical properties of rock masses are dominated by the nonlinear response of joints and their arrangement. In this paper, combined influences of joint spacing (s) and joint inclination angle (β) on mechanical behavior of rock mass models with large open joints under uniaxial compression were investigated by PFC modeling. With a large amount of local measurement circles placed along the pre-defined measurement lines (ML), stresses and joint response parameters at different scales (the measurement circles, the MLs and the whole specimen) were defined and calculated. It was found that macroscopic behaviors of the jointed specimens, such as four types of deformation behaviors, four failure modes, strength, deformability modulus and ductility index, are dominated by nonlinear response of the joint system, especially the interaction between the joints and rock bridges. The joints may experience three stages, i.e., starting to close, closed and opening again. On the joint plane, the peak s... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coating, cover plate, heat transfer, solar collector, thermal network
An important trend of Building Integrated Solar Thermal (BIST) system is to improve the aesthetic aspect of the solar collector to meet the requirement of architectural style and energy collection. Painting on the glass cover in an appropriate method is a simple and practical way. In this study, a halftone coating was used to print a red brick wall pattern on the glass cover. A series of comparative experiments were carried out to test the effect of the coating on the thermal behavior of the solar collector. In heat collection processes, compared with the solar collector with blank cover plate, the one with coated cover plate has lower absorber plate temperature and higher cover plate temperature. The lower the solar irradiance, the smaller the effect of color coating on the solar collector. Compared with the uncoated surface, the coated surface is more sensitive to solar irradiation. In the same heat collection process, compared with the solar collector coated on the outer surface of... [more]

Katarzyna Ratajczak, Edward Szczechowiak
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ecological assessment of ventilation, economical assessment of ventilation, energy-efficiency, heat pump, swimming pool ventilation
Air handling units are usually used to maintain the thermal and humidity parameters in indoor swimming pools that are used for lap swimming and recreation. Their use throughout the year consumes much more energy than, for example, air conditioning in residential or office buildings. Their considerable energy consumption is due to the need for their continuous operation to remove moisture gains from the evaporation of water and to heat the air and cover the heat losses of the pool. It is possible to design ventilation devices in such a way that the operating costs will be reduced, and the environmental impact will be significantly reduced. In this article, six different ventilation units in which different heat sources are used to heat the ventilation air have been evaluated; the selection of which was based on the most commonly used solutions. The results of the analysis are aimed to show which of the available heat sources is the most advantageous in terms of global and operating cost... [more]
Assessment of the Lower Carboniferous-Devonian Aquifer as a Source of Geothermal Energy in the Silesian−Kraków Region (Poland)
Antoni Barbacki, Maciej Miecznik, Barbara Tomaszewska, Robert Skrzypczak
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exploration perspectives, geothermal energy, Paleozoic aquifer, Poland, Silesian–Kraków region
In view of the disastrous air pollution in the Silesian−Kraków region, reducing emissions from the combustion of conventional fuels is a particularly important issue. Geothermal energy is among the clean and renewable sources of heat that could be used to this end, for instance for recreation or space heating purposes. However, its use in the region is limited, mainly due to insufficient knowledge of the characteristics of the geothermal complexes present. Mesozoic complexes in the region have much smaller energy resources compared to the Polish Lowlands or Podhale, but Paleozoic ones, mainly the Lower Carboniferous and Devonian, offer realistic prospects for energy extraction. The aim of this study was to identify geothermal conditions within the Lower Carboniferous−Devonian complex, primarily in terms of using the waters present there for space heating purposes. The prospective zones identified and indicated during the research are only forecasts, and their actual utility can only be... [more]
Analysis of the Influence of Reducing the Duration of a Thermal Response Test in a Water-Filled Geothermal Borehole Located in Spain
Ignacio Martín Nieto, Cristina Sáez Blázquez, Arturo Farfán Martín, Diego González-Aguilera
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ground thermal conductivity, low-enthalpy geothermal systems, software GES-CAL, thermal response test
Usually thermal response tests are restricted to big geothermal projects; the high investment makes them less suitable for designing domestic low-enthalpy geothermal energy systems. The work here presented aims to study the influence of time reduction in thermal response tests on their precision. Due to the importance of the correct assessment of the thermal characterization of the ground for any kind of geothermal system, time reduction in this essay could make it more affordable to be implemented in some domestic systems. A thermal response test has been implemented, and several time intervals of the test have been considered in order to obtain different results for the thermal conductivity of the ground. The mentioned results have been then compared and also the domestic geothermal systems designed from them by the use of the geothermal software GES-CAL. Results have shown that, in some cases (our testing borehole has some singular characteristics), a significant time reduction in t... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: attitude, CubeSat, irradiation, lifespan, orbit perturbation, task scheduling
During satellite development, engineers need to simulate and understand the satellite’s behavior in orbit and minimize failures or inadequate satellite operation. In this sense, one crucial assessment is the irradiance field, which impacts, for example, the power generation through the photovoltaic cells, as well as rules the satellite’s thermal conditions. This good practice is also valid for CubeSat projects. This paper presents a numerical tool to explore typical irradiation scenarios for CubeSat missions by combining state-of-the-art models. Such a tool can provide the input estimation for software and hardware in the loop analysis for a given initial condition and predict it along with the satellite’s lifespan. Three main models will be considered to estimate the irradiation flux over a CubeSat, namely an orbit, an attitude, and a radiation source model, including solar, albedo, and infrared emitted by the Earth. A case study illustrating the tool’s abilities is presented for a ty... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity markets, Energy Efficiency, finite impulse response filters, forecasting, Kalman Filters, power generation planning, prediction, temperature
The motivation for this paper is the enhanced role of power generation prediction in power plants and power systems in the smart grid paradigm. The proposed approach addresses the impact of the ambient temperature on the performance of an open cycle gas turbine when using the Kalman Filter (KF) technique and the power-temperature (P-T) characteristic of the turbine. Several Kalman Filtering techniques are tested to obtain improved temperature forecasts, which are then used to obtain output power predictions. A typical P-T curve of an open-cycle gas turbine is used to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. Nonlinear and linear discrete process models are studied. Extended Kalman Filters are proposed for the nonlinear model. The Time Varying, Time Invariant, and Steady State Kalman Filters are used with the linearized model. Simulation results show that the power generation prediction obtained using the Extended Kalman Filter with the piecewise linear model yields improved... [more]

Keywords: end of life photovoltaic panels, metals recycling, polymers recycling, process simulation, SuperPro Designer
Photovoltaic panels were included in EU Directive as WEEE (Wastes of Electric and Electronic Equipment) requiring the implementation of dedicated collection schemes and end-of-life treatment ensuring targets in terms of recycling rate (80%) and recovery rate (85%). Photovoltaic panels are mainly made up of high-quality solar glass (70−90%), but also metals are present in the frames (Al), the cell (Si), and metallic contacts (Cu and Ag). According to the panel composition, about $72 per 100 kg of panels can be recovered by entirely recycling the panel metal content. The PhotoLife process for the treatment of end-of-life photovoltaic panels was demonstrated at pilot scale to recycle high value glass, Al and Cu scraps. A process upgrade is here reported allowing for polymer separation and Ag and Si recycling. By this advanced PhotoLife process, 82% recycling rate, 94% recovery rate, and 75% recoverable value were attained. Simulations demonstrated the economic feasibility of the process a... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: A-site cation, blue emission, device stability, halide segregation, perovskite light-emitting diodes
Metal halide perovskites have been investigated for the next-generation light-emitting materials because of their advantages such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), excellent color purity, and facile color tunability. Recently, red- and green-emissive perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have shown an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of over 20%, whereas there is still room for improvement for blue emissive PeLEDs. By controlling the halide compositions of chloride (Cl−) and bromide (Br−), the bandgap of perovskites can be easily tuned for blue emission. However, halide segregation easily occurrs in the mixed-halide perovskite under light irradiation and LED operation because of poor phase stability. Here, we explore the effect of A-site cation engineering on the phase stability of the mixed-halide perovskites and find that a judicious selection of low dipole moment A cation (formamidinium or cesium) suppresses the halide segregation. This enables efficient bandgap t... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crystal structure, Mg ion conductor, solid electrolyte, solid solution
MgAl2-xGaxCl8 and MgGa2Cl7Br was synthesized from MgCl2, MgBr2, AlCl3, and GaCl3, and the physical properties were evaluated by XRD, AC conductivity, and X-ray fluorescence. MgAl2-xGaxCl8 has the same crystal structure as MgAl2Cl8, belongs to the space group C2/c, and forms a solid solution in all the synthesized compositions. We attempted to MgGa2Cl8-yBry synthesize in the same manner as MgAl2Cl8, but only obtained MgGa2Cl7Br as a single-phase compound. The AC conductivity of MgAl2-xGaxCl8 was lowest for MgAl2Cl8 and highest for MgGa2Cl8. The conductivity of MgGa2Cl8 at 400 K was 1.7 × 10−6 S/cm. The conductivity of MgGa2Cl7Br was higher than that of MgAl2-xGaxCl8 with a value of 1.6 × 10−5 S/cm at 400 K. The formation of Mg metal was observed at the surface of the cathode electrode in an experiment of flowing a direct current using an electrochemical cell, indicating that this compound is a magnesium ion conductor.

Keywords: biorefinery, Exergy, safety, shrimp
Although shrimp processing wastes have been studied as source of high-value products at lab-scale, no contributions are found in the literature regarding the energetic and safety performance of shrimp-based biorefineries at pilot or large-scale. This works is focused on the inherent safety assessment and exergy analysis of a pilot-scale biorefinery designed to produce shrimp meat and four by-products: chitin, chitosan, nitrogenous extract, and astaxanthin. Total irreversibilities, exergy losses, exergy of wastes and utilities were calculated for stages and the overall process using mass and energy balances of the biorefinery. The hazards associated with chemicals and process conditions were analyzed through substance properties and process data. A Numerical Descriptive Inherent Safety Technique (NuDIST) score of 557.23 suggested a moderate level of risk for the biorefinery compared to other processes, reaching chemical and process safety scores of 185.88 and 371.35, respectively.
