Scenario Analysis for Selecting Sewage Sludge-to-Energy/Matter Recovery Processes
Francesco Facchini, Giovanni Mummolo, Micaela Vitti
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, scenario analysis, sewage sludge treatments plants, sludge-to-energy, sludge-to-matter, treatment selection
The sewage sludges are the byproducts of the wastewater treatment. The new perspective of the wastewater value chain points to a sustainable circular economy approach, where the residual solid material produced by sewage sludge treatments is a resource rather than a waste. A sewage sludge treatment system consists of five main phases; each of them can be performed by different alternative processes. Each process is characterized by its capability to recover energy and/or matter. In this paper, a state of the art of the sludge-to-energy and sludge-to-matter treatments is provided. Then, a scenario analysis is developed to identify suitable sewage sludge treatments plants that best fit the quality and flowrate of sewage sludge to be processed while meeting technological and economic constraints. Based on the scientific literature findings and experts’ opinions, the authors identify a set of reference initial scenarios and the corresponding best treatments’ selection for configuring sewag... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CsPbBr3, effective mass approximation, energy spacing, growth kinetics, perovskite nanocrystals
We synthesized CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) at different reaction temperatures and tracked their growth kinetics on the basis of their optical properties and estimated size. The energies of the absorption and fluorescence (FL) peaks with increasing reaction temperature for the CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs were tuned within the regions of 2.429−2.570 eV and 2.391−2.469 eV, respectively, depending on size of the NCs (9.9−12.5 nm). The Stokes shifts of CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs with increasing NC size decreased from 101 meV to 38 meV. The full-width at half-maximum of the FL peaks for the CdSe NCs decreased from 150 meV to 90 meV because of the improved size uniformity of the CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs. The energy spacing of CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs synthesized at various reaction temperatures was calculated from Tauc plots; this information is critical for determining the bandgap energy and enables the size of the CsPbBr3 perovskite NCs to be estimated using the effective mass approximation.
A New Impedance-Based Main and Backup Protection Scheme for Active Distribution Lines in AC Microgrids

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backup protection, distributed generation, distribution network, Fault Detection, impedance-based protection, main protection, microgrid
Microgrids active characteristics such as grid-connected or islanded operation mode, the distributed generators with an intermittent nature, and bidirectional power flow in active distribution lines lead to malfunction of traditional protection schemes. In this article, an impedance-based fault detection scheme is proposed as the main protection of microgrids by applying the proposed equivalent circuits for doubly-fed lines. In this scheme, relay location data and positive sequence voltage absolute value of the other end of the line are used. It can detect even high impedance faults in grid-connected and islanded modes. It is robust against load and generation uncertainties and network reconfigurations. Low sampling rate and minimum data exchange are among the advantages of the proposed scheme. Moreover, a backup protection scheme based on the conductance variations is suggested. No requirement for the communication link is a distinguished advantage of the proposed backup protection sc... Estimating Downward Shortwave Solar Radiation on Clear-Sky Days in Heterogeneous Surface Using LM-BP Neural Network
Weizhen Wang, Jiaojiao Feng, Feinan Xu
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ASTER, DSSR, finer spatial resolution, heterogeneous surface, LM-BP neural network
Downward surface shortwave radiation (DSSR) plays an important role in the energy balance of the earth’s surface. Accurate estimate of DSSR is of great significance for the rational and effective use of solar energy. Some parameterization schemes were proposed to estimate DSSR using meteorological measurements given ground-based radiation observation sites are scare and uneven. With the development of remote sensing technique, remotely sensed data can be applied to obtain continuous DSSR in space. Commonly, the spatial resolution of most radiation products is relatively low and cannot meet the needs of certain fields. Moreover, some retrieval algorithms based on the radiation transfer models are complicated for non-professionals. In this study, a back-propagation (BP) neural network method with Levenberg−Marquardt (LM) algorithm (hereafter referred to as LM-BP) was applied to predict DSSR by building the relationship between measured DSSR and high-resolution remote sensing data from th... Sanghyun Che, Juwon Kim, Daejun Chang
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold storage system, distributed generation, energy carrier, liquefied natural gas cold energy, liquid air, liquid air utilization
Liquid air can be employed as a carrier of cold energy obtained from liquefied natural gas (LNG) and surplus electricity. This study evaluates the potential of liquid air as a distributed source with a supply chain for a cold storage system using liquid air. Energy storing and distributing processes are conceptually designed and evaluated considering both the thermodynamic and economic aspects. Further, the proposed supply chain is compared with a conventional NH3/CO2 cascade refrigeration system. The thermodynamic analysis demonstrates that the exergy efficiency and the coefficient of performance of the proposed supply chain are 22% and 0.56, respectively. Economic analysis is based on a life cycle cost (LCC) evaluation. From the economic analysis, the liquid air production cost and the LCC of a liquid air cold storage system (LACS) are estimated to be 40.4 USD/ton and 34.2 MMUSD, respectively. The LCC is reduced by 19% in the LACS compared with the conventional refrigeration system.... [more]

Keywords: benchmark dataset, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fluid–structure interaction, fully nonlinear potential flow, heave decay, linear potential flow, physical tests, RANS, sphere, wave energy converters
Highly accurate and precise heave decay tests on a sphere with a diameter of 300 mm were completed in a meticulously designed test setup in the wave basin in the Ocean and Coastal Engineering Laboratory at Aalborg University, Denmark. The tests were dedicated to providing a rigorous benchmark dataset for numerical model validation. The sphere was ballasted to half submergence, thereby floating with the waterline at the equator when at rest in calm water. Heave decay tests were conducted, wherein the sphere was held stationary and dropped from three drop heights: a small drop height, which can be considered a linear case, a moderately nonlinear case, and a highly nonlinear case with a drop height from a position where the whole sphere was initially above the water. The precision of the heave decay time series was calculated from random and systematic standard uncertainties. At a 95% confidence level, uncertainties were found to be very low—on average only about 0.3% of the respective dr... [more]
Energy-Efficient Device Discovery Mechanism for Device-to-Device Communications in 5G Networks
Mingfu Li, Hsin-Ling Tsai
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 5G networks, device discovery, device-to-device (D2D) communications, Internet of Things (IoTs), Wi-Fi Direct
The conventional direct device discovery scheme which uses the random access protocol and encounters contentions or collisions is highly energy and time-consuming. To reduce the energy consumption of user equipments (UEs), this work proposes a two-phase hybrid device discovery mechanism for device-to-device (D2D) communications. In the first phase, the evolved packet core (EPC) or base station (BS) uses the location information of UEs to judge whether two UEs are able to establish a D2D link. In the second phase, UEs use Wi-Fi Direct to discover their target UEs. The BS directly assigns UEs’ states and allocates appropriate Wi-Fi channels to UEs. UEs no longer have to search or listen to all channels, thus reducing the discovery delay. The proposed mechanism saves cellular spectrum resources because it uses unlicensed bands for D2D discovery and communications. The performance of the proposed hybrid D2D discovery mechanism is also theoretically analyzed in this paper. Evaluation result... [more]

Yusung Lee, Woohyun Kim
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy saving, optimal control strategy, optimal start, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system
In this study, an optimal control strategy for the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system is developed using a data-driven model and on-site data to save the building energy. Three data-based models are developed to improve the on-site applicability. The presented models are used to determine the length of time required to bring each zone from its current temperature to the set point. The existing data are used to evaluate and validated the predictive performance of three data-based models. Experiments are conducted using three outdoor units and eight indoor units on site. The experimental test is performed to validate the performance of proposed optimal control by comparing between conventional and optimal control methods. Then, the ability to save energy wasted for maintaining temperature after temperature reaches the set points is evaluated through the comparison of energy usage. Given these results, 30.5% of energy is saved on average for each outdoor unit and the proposed optimal... [more]

Keywords: economic sustainability, factor analysis, Industry 4.0, mechanical engineering industry, Slovakia
Industry 4.0 and related automation and digitization have a significant impact on competition between companies. They have to deal with the lack of financial resources to apply digital solutions in their businesses. In Slovakia, Industry 4.0 plays an important role, especially in the mechanical engineering industry (MEI). This paper aims to identify the groups of financial ratios that can be used to measure the financial performance of the companies operating in the Slovak MEI. From the whole MEI, we selected the 236 largest non-financial corporations whose ranking we obtained according to the amount of generated revenues in 2017. Using factor analysis, from eleven traditional financial ratios, we extracted four independent factors that measure liquidity (equity to liabilities ratio, quick ratio, debt ratio, net working capital to assets ratio, current ratio), profitability (return on sales, return on investments), indebtedness (financial leverage, debt to equity ratio), and activity (... Keywords: biofuel, bioprocess engineering, design, light transfer, Modelling, photobioreactor
This study investigates the effect of condensed water droplets on the areal biomass productivity of outdoor culture systems with a free surface, protected by a transparent window or cover to prevent contamination and to control the growth conditions. Under solar radiation, evaporation from the culture causes droplets to condense on the interior surface of the cover. To quantify the effect of droplets on the system’s performance, the bidirectional transmittance of a droplet-covered window was predicted using the Monte Carlo ray-tracing method. It was combined with a growth kinetics model of Chlorella vulgaris to predict the temporal evolution of the biomass concentration on 21 June and 23 September in Los Angeles, CA. A droplet contact angle of 30∘ or 90∘ and a surface area coverage of 50% or 90% were considered. Light scattering by the condensed droplets changed the direction of the incident sunlight while reducing the amount of light reaching the culture by up to 37%. The combined eff... [more]
A Computer Tool for Modelling CO2 Emissions in Driving Tests for Vehicles with Diesel Engines
Karol Tucki
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biofuel, computer simulation, engine, neural network, vehicle
The dynamic development of transport in recent decades reflects the level of economic development in the world. The transport sector today is one of the main barriers to the achievement of the European Union’s climate protection objectives. More and more restrictive legal regulations define permissible emission limits for the amounts of toxic substances emitted into the atmosphere. Numerical CO2 modeling tools are one way to replace costly on-road testing. Driving cycles, which are an approximation of the vehicle’s on-road operating conditions, are the basis of any vehicle approval procedure. The paper presents a computer tool that uses neural networks to simulate driving tests. Data obtained from tests on the Mercedes E350 chassis dynamometer were used for the construction of the neural model. All the collected operational parameters of the vehicle, which are the input data for the built model, were used to create simulation control runs for driving tests: Environmental Protection Age... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ash, biofuel production, buckwheat hulls, composition, mixture, wheat straw
The aim of this study was to further increase the amount of straw that can be used to produce solid biofuels, as currently only about 130−140 thousand of the 3 million tonnes of straw collected annually in Lithuania are used for solid biofuel production. Therefore, the use of buckwheat hulls as an additive in solid biofuel production was investigated. Mixtures of wheat straw and buckwheat hulls were used for this research, with an increase in buckwheat hulls from 25% to 75% of the total weight of the mixture. Results of the analysis of the chemical composition, moisture, ash, and volatile matter content of the mixtures, as well as their ash properties, were compared with the corresponding results obtained with pure buckwheat hulls, wheat straw, and wood chips. It is observed an increase in all ash melting temperatures by increasing the portion of buckwheat hulls in the mixture. Additionally, the ash shrinkage starting temperature was shown to increase as the total content of buckwheat... [more]

Keywords: cave-in-rock switchgrass, delignification, lignin, lignocellulose, sonication time, ultrasonic irradiation
This present study was undertaken to investigate the ultrasonic delignification of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and the effects of ultrasonic irradiation on the molecular and microstructure of switchgrass. We investigated this question using response surface methodology (RSM) featuring a four-factor, three-level Box−Behnken experimental design with acoustic power (120, 180, and 240 W), solid−solvent ratio (1/25, 1/20, and 1/15 g/mL), hammer mill screen size (1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 mm), and sonication time (10, 30, and 50 min) as factors, while delignification (%) was the response variable. The native and treated switchgrass samples were further characterized through crystallinity measurements and electron microscopy. The results of lignin analysis show that the percent delignification ranged between 1.86% and 20.11%. The multivariate quadratic regression model developed was statistically significant at p < 0.05. SEM and TEM micrographs of the treated switchgrass grinds resulted in c... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: characteristic parameters, coal dust, gas, hybrid explosion, prediction model
In order to investigate the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas, and then establish an effective prediction method of these parameters, the maximum explosion pressure, explosion index, and lower explosion limit of coal dust and gas mixtures were measured in a standard 20 L spherical explosion system. Four different kinds of hybrid mixture were selected in this study and they are composed of coal dust with different components and gas respectively. According to the measured results, the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas was analyzed, and the prediction method of these parameters was discussed. The results show that the addition of gas to a coal dust cloud can obviously increase its maximum explosion pressure and explosion index and notably reduce its minimum explosion concentration. On increasing the gas equivalent ratio, the maximum explosion pressure of coal dust and gas... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon capture and storage (CCS), climate mitigation, coal transition, energy-water nexus, India’s energy transition, integrated assessment, levelized costs, meta-analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy
Roadmaps for India’s energy future foresee that coal power will continue to play a considerable role until the middle of the 21st century. Among other options, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is being considered as a potential technology for decarbonising the power sector. Consequently, it is important to quantify the relative benefits and trade-offs of coal-CCS in comparison to its competing renewable power sources from multiple sustainability perspectives. In this paper, we assess coal-CCS pathways in India up to 2050 and compare coal-CCS with conventional coal, solar PV and wind power sources through an integrated assessment approach coupled with a nexus perspective (energy-cost-climate-water nexus). Our levelized costs assessment reveals that coal-CCS is expensive and significant cost reductions would be needed for CCS to compete in the Indian power market. In addition, although carbon pricing could make coal-CCS competitive in relation to conventional coal power plants, it cannot... [more]

Keywords: assessment, geothermal resource, Monte Carlo simulation, North Jiangsu Basin, thermal reservoir
Geothermal energy has been recognized as an important clean renewable energy. Accurate assessment of geothermal resources is an essential foundation for their development and utilization. The North Jiangsu Basin (NJB), located in the Lower Yangtze Craton, is shaped like a wedge block of an ancient plate boundary and large-scale carbonate thermal reservoirs are developed in the deep NJB. Moreover, the NJB exhibits a high heat flow background because of its extensive extension since the Late Mesozoic. In this study, we used the Monte Carlo method to evaluate the geothermal resources of the main reservoir shallower than 10 km in the NJB. Compared with the volumetric method, the Monte Carlo method takes into account the variation mode and uncertainties of the input parameters. The simulation results show that the geothermal resources of the sandstone thermal reservoir in the shallow NJB are very rich, with capacities of (6.6−12) × 1020 J (mean 8.6 × 1020 J), (5.1−16) × 1020 J (mean 9.1 × 1... April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural wastes, anaerobic digestion, kinetic study, modified Gompertz model, modified logistic model, modified Richards model
The modified sigmoidal bacteria growth functions (the modified Gompertz, logistic, and Richards) were used to evaluate the methane production process kinetics of agricultural wastes. The mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion experiments were conducted with various agricultural wastes as feedstocks, including cow manure, corn straw, grape leaves, vines, wine residue, strawberry leaves, and tomato leaves. The results showed that anaerobic co-digestion of cow manure and other agricultural wastes increased the methane yields while it prolonged the lag phase time. Compared with the modified Gompertz and logistic models, the modified Richards model obtained higher correlation coefficients and was able to fit experimental data better. The results of this study were expected to determine a suitable model to simulate and study the kinetic process of anaerobic co-digestion with mixed agricultural wastes as feedstocks.

This paper proposes a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) that optimizes the load demand and distributed energy resources. The optimal demand/generation profile is presented while considering utility price signal, customer satisfaction, and distribution transformer condition. The electricity home demand considers electric vehicles (EVs), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and all types of non-shiftable, shiftable, and controllable appliances. Furthermore, PV-based renewable energy resources, EVs, and BESSs are utilized as sources of generated power during specific time intervals. In this model, customers can only perform Demand Response (DR) actions with contracts with utility operators. A multi-objective demand/generation response is proposed to optimize the scheduling of various loads/supplies based on the pricing schemes. The customers’ behavior comfort level and a degradation cost that reflects the distribution transformer Loss-of-Life (LoL) are integrated into the multi-obje... [more]

Keywords: circumferential compensation, fatigue strength, gear pump, lips compensating
This article presents theoretical and experimental calculations of the minimum thickness of a compensation lip used in external gear pumps. Pumps of this type are innovative technical solutions in which circumferential backlash (clearance) compensation is used to improve their volumetric and overall efficiency. However, constructing a prototype of such a pump requires long-lasting research, and the compensation lip is its key object, due to the fact that it is an element influenced by a notch and that it operates in unfavorable conditions of strong fatigue stresses. The theoretical calculations presented in this article are based on identifying maximum stress values in a fatigue cycle and on implementing the stress failure condition and the conditions related to the required value of the fatigue safety factor. The experimental research focuses on static bending tests of the lips as well as on the fatigue loading of the lips in series of tests at increasing stress values until lip failu... [more]

Keywords: AHP two-level multi-attribute model, CSR, firm type, moderating effect, profitability
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is among the dominant multi-attribute methods of comprehensively representing the competitiveness of a company. A large number of studies have commonly found that profitability can positively affect CSR. However, positivity depends on firm type and the economy, and there is little research in this area. The objective of this paper is to study and verify whether the profitability of different types of companies has a comparable impact on CSR measures in Chinese appliance listed companies. A specific multi-attribute AHP (analytic hierarchy process) model was proposed to determine the CSR for the conditions of Chines appliance listed companies. The interactive regression model serves to analyse the impact of a firm type. The specific multi-attribute AHP model was verified as a suitable tool for CSR evaluation of Chines appliance listed companies. The regression results show that for family firms, the impact of profitability on CSR is significant, whil... [more]
